BROWN HAS AN AUTHOR'S MIDAS TOUCH.......2007-08-03
It occurs to me that Sandra Brown's novels are a bit like chocolate ice cream - if chocolate is your favorite flavor. We know what it tastes like, we like it, and we never tire of it. If it changed, we might riot. In Ms. Brown's stories love conquers all, but there are lots of twists and turns along the way. A bit of steam escapes the pages, yet nothing that would make most of us gasp. We know all of this, and we can't wait for her next book.
Mirror Image doesn't veer far from the hugely successful Brown formula. There is a horrific plane crash in which one woman dies and another rescues that woman's child. The rescuer, Avery Daniels, is so severely injured that she is mistaken for Carole Rutledge, and a plastic surgeon gives Avery Carole's face.
Now, Carole wasn't exactly the most generous of souls who gave unselfishly to family and friends. Quite the opposite. Her husband, Senatorial candidate Tate Rutledge, was planning to divorce her. However, due to her injuries and the fact that she saved his daughter's life, he opts to stay with her until she is fully recovered. What he cannot understand is why he feels so attracted to a woman he so recently wanted to put out of his life.
Didn't I mention twists and turns? Avery discovers that someone is planning to kill Tate, and she vows to discover who it is thus saving Tate's life. There's danger ahead.
Nonetheless, not to worry - just enjoy the Brown touch. Love will conquer all.
Voice performer Dick Hill is aguably one of the best. His awards are numerous (three Audies to name a trio). A male narrator for this story is very appealing, and there couldn't be a better one than Mr. Hill.
Enjoy!

The Great Twin Swap.......2007-04-09
A set of twins trade places, and of course there are complications. You may even find yourself picking this one up a second or third time.
So good it deserves 6 stars.......2007-02-10
After a fatal plane crash, Avery Daniels is mistakenly identified as Carole Rutledge, a senatorial candidate's wife. When she couldn't speak or write, she couldn't stop the plastic surgeon from giving her Carole's face. Avery plans to tell Tate Rutledge that his wife is actually dead, but then she learns that Carole and someone else close to Tate is planning to assassinate him before the election. She plays the charade of being Tate's wife in order to save him, and as her real feelings for him start to take shape, so does the killer's plan, and neither Tate nor Avery can survive the assassination if the killer isn't unmasked in time.
A slow start lead to a brilliant novel. The character's were very realistic, with realistic feelings and flaws. The plot was original and sophisticated, and though the killer's identity was predictable, there were some plot twist that threw the story through loops. A real page turner. It's been a long time since I've enjoyed a book this much.
Good early Brown novel with a suspenseful twist.......2006-10-06
Reporter Avery Daniels boards a doomed flight and is one of a dozen survivors. While badly burned and recovering in the hospital, she is mistaken for Carole Rutledge, wife of an up and coming politician Tate Rutledge, due to her resemblance and stature, and the fact that she rescued Mandy Rutledge from the wreckage. Unable to communicate as a result of the severity of her injuries, she's helpless as plastic surgery is performed to restore Carole's face, and late one night she overhears a plot to harm Tate.
Armed with a new face and a new lease on life, she assumes Carole's life to protect Tate and uncover the assassin's identity, falling for Tate and Mandy in the process. Tate is shocked to discover that a brush with death has turned his wife into a woman he can once again love. He is note sure if he can forgive her selfish misdeeds and was planning to divorce her after the election, but he is giving seconds thoughts to this as the two are resuming marital relations. Will Avery be able to stop the next assassination attempt? Will she be able to hold onto the man and child she has come to love?
Originally penned in 1990, Brown's novel is one of her best early efforts and does not appear dated as some of her other early efforts. It is one of the better identity-switch novels out there (Brown mined the same field later in "The Switch"). The chemistry between the two leads is scorching and will have even the most jaded readers rooting for a happily ever after. And a nice twist as to the culprit behind the assassination plot.
Its OKAY ! .......2006-04-08
This has to be Brown's weakest so far ! Too many loopholes in the plot n numerous unnecessary sex scenes !
Blah...! Prefer same author's "The Witness" anyday !

Snapshot of American Pop Culture and You.......2007-09-04
MIRROR ON AMERICA is a text book composed of various essays examining the impact pop culture has upon modern American society. Some of the areas examined include fashion, marketing, television, movies, music, sports, fast food restaurants, theme parks, and the Internet. Various social issues are also examined including gender identity and self-image, race, and ethnic backgrounds. The essays are taken from a wide variety of sources including newspapers, magazines, popular journals, song lyrics, and websites. Most of the writings are quite short, between 2-3 pages, and are easy to understand.
The book is often used in introductory college lit classes as a way of introducing to students how to critically examine their culture and the media. Even though I read the book and found it very easy to read (I finished the entire book in 3 days), I think that it would work well for teaching students who haven't had many critical thinking classes before. I also think it would make a good text to use while teaching a high school media literacy class. Overall, though the book isn't spectacular, it does a decent job at doing what it was designed for.
good, but a bit simplistic.......2006-05-16
I considered using this book for the college freshman composition course that I teach. I decided against it, however, because the book lacks depth and the reading level is a bit too low. There are some good sample essays that make for fun out of class reading, but they don't really push the envelope. The study questions are high-school level, and the book is riddled with footnotes defining words that college students should already know. The result is patronizing and distracting. If I use this book, it would be for a class that focuses solely on pop culture and advertising issues, but it would still need to be supplemented with another text, other examples or just a lot of in-class discussion to go beyond the shallow treatments here. Also, many of the "hip" references are already woefully out of date for today's college freshman.
Wonderful Textbook on American Culture.......2006-03-24
As a developmental compostion teacher, I have used this text for several years, and without question, the students have not only praised it, but strongly recommended it for future classes. That kind of praise has never happened to me with any other textbook. Students love the readings--they are lively, challenging, yet very pertinent to real issues and not watered-down versions of those controversies. Additionally, I love the readings because they blend real-life experiences and observations with real in-depth critical analysis, but still, at a level that is both accessible and challenging.
Good Lit. Class Book.......2002-12-29
This book was used in my college English Lit. class to help students be more critic of things that they read, whether it be a textbook or a magazine article. Most of the essays in the book have major flaws. The one that I remember the best was written by Dick Clark and was about Elvis Presley. Clark makes the comment that Elvis didn't write his own songs, which is untrue (as blanket statements tend to be). Anyway, Elvis wrote at least 2 hits, one with Vera Matson (Love Me Tender) and another with Otis Blackwell (Don't Be Cruel).
Though many of these essays are poorly written, this is a good textbook for developing with critical reading skills.
Mirror On America = P.O.S.(negative connotation).......2001-04-23
Obviously, most of these writers spent too much time in front of the mirror while blabbing on about nothing, after having read these essays. They go on and write about blatant issues, most of them have too much time on their hands. They go on and blab about nothing. These essays shouldn't be given the light of day. Do not attempt to read or buy this book. Don't even give it a glimpse at the bookstore or library. It is not worth your precious time. It certainly wasted mine, only because I had to use this book for my Composition II course in college. It is that bad, and not worth a single penny. Mirror On America is nothing more than a piece of "FILL IN YOUR WORD."
Book Description
This hands-on workbook on a hot topic shows girls how to sift through the powerful messages that society and the media send them about women's bodies and being feminine. It encourages them to let go of unrealistic standards of perfection and cultivate a positive self-image based on who the are not how they look!
Book Description
During the 1930s and 1940s, women artists associated with the Surrealist movement produced a significant body of self-images that have no equivalent among the works of their male colleagues. While male artists exalted Woman's otherness in fetishized images, women artists explored their own subjective worlds. The self-images of Claude Cahun, Dorothea Tanning, Leonora Carrington, Frida Kahlo, Meret Oppenheim, Remedios Varo, Kay Sage, and others both internalize and challenge conventions for representing femininity, the female body, and female subjectivity. Many of the representational strategies employed by these pioneers continue to resonate in the work of contemporary women artists. The words "Surrealist" and "surrealism" appear frequently in discussions of such contemporary artists as Louise Bourgeois, Ana Mendieta, Cindy Sherman, Francesca Woodman, Kiki Smith, Dorothy Cross, Michiko Kon, and Paula Santiago.
This book, which accompanies an exhibition organized by the MIT List Visual Arts Center, explores specific aspects of the relationship between historic and contemporary work in the context of Surrealism. The contributors reexamine art historical assumptions about gender, identity, and intergenerational legacies within modernist and postmodernist frameworks. Questions raised include: how did women in both groups draw from their experiences of gender and sexuality? What do contemporary artistic practices involving the use of body images owe to the earlier examples of both female and male Surrealists? What is the relationship between self-image and self- knowledge?
Contributors: Dawn Ades, Whitney Chadwick, Salomon Grimberg, Katy Kline, Helaine Posner, Susan Rubin Suleiman, Dickran Tashjian.

Excellent analysis of Women and Surrealism.......2001-05-31
Although the publication of "Women and Surrealism" by Whitney Chadwick in the 1980s brought about a larger appreciation of women involved in the movement, there is still a surprising shortage of material published about surrealist artists such as Leonora Carrington and Remedios Varo. "Mirror Images: Women, Surrealism, and Self Representation" offers a series of insightful essays on these and other artists' images and ideas of self. Most interestingly, many of the essays discuss the work of Surrealist "descendents," including Cindy Sherman and Louise Bourgeois. Overall, very well constructed and written, with essays by the leading scholars in this still under-appreciated area.

Op-Center Fan.......2007-08-17
I have enjoyed all of the Clancy Op-Center books I've read, and this one is no different. "Games of State" has an entertaining and exciting story line with a great cast of characters. I still prefer the regular Tom Clancy novels, but the Op-Center books are a nice change of pace.
Not nearly as good the second time through.......2007-02-04
My first reading of Op-Center came about because I enjoyed Tom Clancy's previous novels. It led to me reading a number of other Op-Center books. I enjoyed them all.
I just reread the original Op-Center... it wasn't nearly as good the second time through.
Why is that?
Tom Clancy has a knack for spinning a complex story with many characters, and making each character stand out enough that the reader doesn't get mixed up. This didn't happen with this reading... I kept being confused who was where and with what agency. I think this is because I read it faster. The only other book I have read twice is The Hunt for Red October, and the second time was as a book on CD, meaning that I couldn't go any faster than the narrator. And it was great!
I'll try another Clancy book as a repeat in the future, and see whether I have the same reaction. Oh, and in Clancy's books, the good guys eventually win, technology works great, and guys are very manly. If you've read any of his novels, you know what I mean.
Op-Center what a ride!.......2006-08-08
This is a Clancy classic! Keeps your interest and juices flowing from cover to cover!
It's ok, but 3.5 stars is closer........2005-11-02
First, I just want to say that this review IS about the first book. This book is not about Neo-Nazis or the Turks and Kurds. It is based in North/South Korea.
This book is an acceptable start to the series, but could have been much better. For one, it was a pretty lame "crisis". It didn't even last more than two days, which I realize is possible, but not very likely. Even more ridiculous is the marital problems mixed in that also last only two days and then are fixed (although in later books you find that it is not actually "fixed") as well as the son's sudden viral attack and even more sudden recovery.
One other pretty lame portion is where a major figure and two less heard-of figures go into a threatening position. The least mentioned of the three gets killed and the other little heard-of guy gets wounded, while the most heard-of guy is unharmed. The part of the one guy getting wounded is also somewhat ridiculous. He was knocked over and shot at from right above him, yet all he got was a shoulder wound. It does not seem right to be standing over someone and shoot him, but only get his shoulder, even if you are in a hurry.
Also, for being the first book in a series, it doesn't give very much information about op-Center as a whole.
As for the good parts, there are few that are easily mentioned. One part is how Major Lee is introduced. In the first section where he is mentioned, you are given the one detail that later reveals his true nature to you.
I feel that the subplot of Gregory Donald was a good and necessary inclusion. Without it, you wouldn't understand his great desire to get to the border and behind it.
Overall, I would recommend this book, but mainly just for those of you who have read other books in the series and want to know more about some of the earlier details. Otherwise, it is not very great material, especially for coming under Clancy's name. Read and enjoy.
Entertaining and somewhat insightful.......2005-05-15
A good read for anyone really. It provides a view of both sides, both US and the Kurds, and historical information and cultural background to the area.
Definitly a good read, and somewhat educational about the conflicts and ideals in the Middle East (atleast as far as the Kurds and Turks go).
