Good basics but probably more for the new long-distance cyclist. I felt it a bit redundant and perhaps 1/2 of the book was actually helpful to read. Written in an easy-to-read fashion.

I am a subscriber to Bicycling magazine. Every month I eagerly open the latest issue and almost without exception am disappointed in the lack of substantial content. Most articles are superficial at best, stating obvious facts and making suggestions of questionable value. If you have had a similar experience with the Bicycling the magazine then you already know what you will find in this book.
There is surprising little useful content here. Equipment tips and suggestions are generally useless. For instance much attention is given to the benefit of clipless pedals. Well duh!!! Important topics for long distance cycling such as working out a comfortable saddle system are given almost no useful coverage (usually something like "get a saddle which is comfortable"). Most of the chapters as they relate to equipment are quite dated and need to be revised.
Topics such as Lactic Threshold, heart rate monitoring, and training strategies are introduced but unless they are completely new to you the discussions of each are not likely to be useful.
I generally could not bring myself to completely read any of the suggestions and skimmed through most of the book. I did find a couple of pieces worth reading but to be honest I can not recall them at the moment.
My advice is to skip this book. Anything of value that could be found in it could also be easily found on any of a number of websites devoted to cycling and training. For an excellent alternative book covering a lot of useful training discussion see "Cycling Past 50" by Joel Friel. Despite the title, riders of all ages will find wonderful discussions of training physiology and strategies which will apply well to your long distance goals.
Now if someone would just would make a cycling magazine that is worth reading so I can relegate "Bicycling" to the bathroom stall with Mens Health and Outside..........

I was a bit disappointed with this book. The title implies that the authors present a systematic way of building skill and endurance for long distance cycling. Instead, it is more of a collection of tips. The content is still worthwhile.

I absolutely think this book is terrific. You must read every word. It has much useable info on some very important subjects such as nutrition, prep, etc. Even if you are not doing long distance, this book is a must!!!!

HITS the Target.......2007-09-08
This book updates the reader on high intensity training principles. It is written by the guy who used to work with the founder of Nautilus, Arthur Jones. Arthur Jones popularized the concepts of high intensity strength training back in the 70's which have to do with pushing as hard as you possibly can doing only ONE set of an exercise- and then backing off and letting the muscles recuperate. What can I say- the stuff really works!
The principles are sound and will be most useful for weight lifters who have trouble putting on muscle. Also recommend Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff if you have a shoulder problem that is interfering with your weight training.
the book is ok.......2007-07-09
dr darden's book might not deliver on it's promise but still it's a good read.it has many discussions of core hit principles plus never before seen pictures of professional bodybuilders from the 70s and early 80s like mentzer jr and sr,viator,coe,wilson,arnold,sergio,columbu etc.it gives a detailed exercise regimen along with dietary advice.
however when compared to other books like the late mentzer's it falls short.mentzer's writing are far far better than this book.i am also repulsed by ell darden's attempted character assaination of the late mentzer.he pokes fun at mike mental illness.since when can a man be judged by his mental problems?he also tries to show that mike was not as hardcore as many have been lead to believe.as proof he cites mike's disincilination to exercise in 83.well mike had lost all motivation after the 80 olympia fiasco,so blaming him for not putting forth the effort demanded to be a mr o is simply to drop the context.

If I could rate this book a 10 I would! It is so well organized and thought out. Each chapter leads onto the next chapter perfectly! I loved that it gave picture examples of how to preform all the exercises it suggested and tips. I loved that it gave a basic two week eating plan until I could get my hands on a better one. This was one of the best reads ever!

I am a life long weight lifter, normal guy... that is to say, I lift weights to feel good, to remain strong and to stay connected with some sense of my escaping youth. At 40 I broke my leg in 3 places slipping on ice at work. I ballooned with comfort (hate) foods from 195 all the way up to 227 in about 6 months, one year and 3 months later I was rushed to the Emergency room with a numb left side, where I discovered a very blocked artery in my heart... one emergency angioplasty later and, well you get the idea. I was depressed frustrated and feeling even worse than when I broke my leg.
Back at physical therapy now for my heart, I had several conversations with a grossly over weight therapist who assured me that all the weight lifting and cardio work in the world would not change my hyper cholesterol levels and that only through heavy doses of staten drugs would I achieve a safe level of LDL...
between his posture and my disgust for Pharmaceutical drugs I decided to get something going.. He was right about one thing my old routines of "chest and tri's" 'Back and bi's" and 'Legs and Shoulders" really wasn't getting me anywhere, 3 months in and I had lost a little bit of weight and my arms were starting to come back but nothing to brag about... at 42 I was feeling washed up. Then someone turned me on to this book by Darden.. I read it cover to cover.. yes as some of the other reviews mentioned it's anecdotal, but the meat of it is the training and diet plans..
yes it is possible to build muscle with 1500 calories a day, and while single sets to failure may sound funny, the reality is that within 6 weeks I had lost 20 plus pounds of fat and put on a whopping 6 pounds of muscle. That may not sound like much to the juice heads but for the rest of the population it's a freaking miracle. I augmented his diets with heavy protein and homeopathic HGH after that initial 6 weeks and am finishing up week 11.... Now with a total of 32 pounds of fat loss and 12 pounds of muscle (body fat from 27.2% to 18%)I can say without question that HIT works, the diets work... and the super-hydration works, together they create a synergistic effect that blows the doors off traditional Diet/strength training programs.
My cardiologist is AMAZED by my consistent drops in cholesterol and I still have not told him that I stopped the Zocor! I am not recommending that anyone else do this as I certainly am taking a huge risk by doing so... however, the proof is there and if you've got willpower and desire I truly believe this is the way to go....

Excellent resource on treating and preventing injuries..........2007-09-06
This is a great book that concisely explains the anatomy and physiology of the rotator cuff including the bones, muscles, biomechanics, etc. in just enough detail for the average person to understand. It also describes how to distinguish between different types of injuries, how to approach rehabilitating them and collects a lot of rotator cuff injuries in one small volume. While the book is rather expensive for its size, it packs a lot of well-explained information into a small space.
I'm an ex-physiology teaching fellow and scientist. I thought this book was great and turned something that is often difficult to explain into something anyone who can read can understand. The diagrams are good and the book contains no unnecessary detail.
I also agree with other reviewers that while Jim Johnson isn't an expert on rotator cuffs, his book is thoroughly researched and he does have a PT credential and has undoubtedly had 15 years of clinical experience in a teaching hospital environment. This suggests he has a very good nuts and bolts understanding and hands-on experience.

This is the second book of Jim Johnson's that I have bought. The first one fixed my back pains with a simple exercise to strengthen the Multifidus muscles.
The exercises in this book has significantly reduced pain and increased mobility in my left shoulder, allowing me to sleep through the night and lift my arm over my shoulder.
Review of, "Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff".......2007-06-13
I ordered this book for my brother-in-law who has experienced shoulder pain and not being able to lift his arm higher than shoulder level due to a rotator cuff injury he received in the past. I recommended it to him because of the wonderful results I got using the information in this book to treat my own right shoulder pain.
Having previously read, Jim Johnson's, The Sixty-Second Motivator, and finding it very helpful, I can tell you that I certainly had the motivation to try and stick with an exercise that would relieve my painful and restricting condition. And it sounded to me like my brother-in-law was in the same boat.
I used the Sidelying External Rotation exercise on page 55 of the rotator cuff book and got great results. The first time I tried it I could only manage to raise a 20 ounce can of pineapple about half way up less than ten times. I found the detailed instruction, precautions and notes particularly helpful and feel that carefully following them was why I experienced the gradual recovery. My wife sat beside me making sure I did the exercise slowly and exactly as the book states. After about four weeks I actually worked up to fully raising the can of pineapple 20 times. Later on I increased the weight little by little and began to feel good enough to resume some of the more physically demanding activities on our small farm.
Last week I was actually able to assist with harvesting our hay and didn't suffer during or afterward from any of the shoulder pain or stiffness that I had previously experienced many times. Yes, I was careful about what I did and how I worked, but for me to even attempt to try stacking a 60 pound bale of hay was completely out of the question a few months ago. I went from shoulder pain that caused me sleepless nites and not being able to lift my right arm any higher than shoulder level, to what I consider a darned good day's work.
This book is a real bargain and indeed I consider it invaluable when I think about how it helped me. And as you can see, I heartily recommend it.

Just as the book promised, I had a eureka! moment the other day. I bought this book because I have been having unidentified rotator cuff problems for years (I was a baseball and now am an avid softball player). Because everyone talks about rotator cuff tears, I assumed that's what my problem was. After reading Johnson's book, I was surprised and pleased to discover that my problem was most likely simply an impingement, and that no matter what your unspecified problem it is, it is likely to improve from his exercises (he cites the studies that prove this claim). Prior to starting his exercises, it was painful to soap up in the shower, sleep or do anything where I had to reach my back. Now, after just a month of the stretches and strengthening exercises I realized all of a sudden the other day (eureka!) that I have no pain in my shoulders! My range of motion is not where it should be yet in one shoulder, but it's improving. I still have a ways to go, but I'm encouraged by my progress so far.
Johnson's book is written to help people with all severity of rotator cuff problems. Anywhere from being unable to lift an arm overhead to near full utility of the joint. He also gives you measurements by which you can judge your flexibility, which is also nice to help you figure out what "normal" is.
I suppose the question still remains: why don't you just go to a doctor, idiot? I suppose the real answer is the inconvenience of going, the cost, and primarily, just that I'm a DIYer type my nature, and like to fix things on my own when I can.
The only reason I didn't go to 5 stars was because I got the impression from the book that Johnson is really just a guy (in the field) who reviewed some studies and came up with a program. Now, that's a great way to go about things, but I would not call him an *expert* on rotator cuffs. On the plus side, that does make him very easy to understand, as opposed to some of the surgeons out there who have written on the subject.

I've never read a self-help type book before, and probably wouldn't have picked this book out on my own. I recieved a copy of this book through a marketing campaign, and figured that I'd give it a shot.
I usually fly through novels and non-fiction books, so I've had to take a completely diferrent approach to reading this book. I've been plowing through it, one chapter every week or so, and it's been having some impact on how I think about my professional life.
The book is filled with the author's anecdotes as well as stories of other women, and guides you throuh exercises that break down your goals and actions. I'm finding it helpful, and would recommend it to anyone looking for a book to help them understand how to reach their goals.

Worked for me.......2007-07-18
I am a fairly active guy, age 28, who works out a few times a week and is fairly strong (5'8'' bench max ~300) I decided to try this program as my body wasn't looking as young any more.
The book is clear and he presents the reasoning behind the workout and the diet very clearly. He advocates using the most common performance supplements (glutamine, creatine, whey protein, and maltodextrin) as well as multivitamins and minerals. I followed the diet about 65-75%. I drank a sports drink during the workouts for the first time, took protein supplements before and after most workouts as directed, took the creatine supplement as directed, and occasionally took a glutamine supplement. I opted out on the maltodextrin, as I'm concerned that I might be developing hypoglycemia. (This was per recommendations in the book). I instead substituted sugars that digest slightly slower.
The cost of my supplementation including vitamins was about 40-50$ per month.
I followed the workout schedule fairly religiously (90-95% adherence). The workout definitely made me feel stronger. Sprint workouts are hard on the older body, especially a massive one, and I did have some knee joint problems despite doing all of the warm ups as directed. The workout calls for 4 sprint workouts per week, and I've realized after doing the workout that I can only reasonably handle 2-3.
Still, all told, I gained 10-12 lbs while becoming trimmer and 10-15% stronger, despite being in decent shape when I started. I would recommend this book and program to anyone who is serious about seeing results.
Easy Read.......2007-04-09
This book is Amazing and so easy to read and comprehend. Mackie Shilstone is a great fitness guru. I haven't completed the program just yet, but am very excited so far. If you want something (like I did) that is all laid out for you i.e. workout, suplements, and nutrition this is the book. I'll add more to this after I have completed the program, until then get this book.

Amazing book, I had some questions about how to better understand the whole process of Sex and Sexual Response so I could better understand my own body and how to use it in the most advantageous way, as well as the smartest way. I am a 48 year old female and as long as I can remember had been overweight. I also tried many programs and diets without success. When I came to Dr Runels, I remember being in such pain mentally and physically and felt as though I was too tired to do anything.
After talking with him, he gave me a plan and his book. I began reading his book and I couldn't stop until I was finished. (It was just that interesting) As I read and followed his plan, I learned so much from a physical, mental, and spitritual point of view. As time went on, I ate as he told me, took testosterone, growth hormone and armour thyroid (as I was low in all of these) and began to walk three miles a day.
I had never been consistent with exercise until I heard Dr Runels explain it the way he did. It turned a light on for me and I have been consistent ever since.
Now, with a weight loss of over 90 pounds and walking 3 miles a day, I have never felt better in my life. I will forever be grateful to Dr. Runels for changing my life and I thank God for him and the knowlege he shares in his book.

This book is real informative about a topic nobody talks about but everyone wants to know. Cool facts and strategies included. I personally enjoyed the section on horomones and male cycles. However, I was looking for a little more magic to assist. In the end it just comes down to will power.

I am a 70 year old man. I have read this book and have been applying the principles. Do not let the format deceive you. The book is laid out as a workbook with space for writing and list homework assignments. If you work thru the book taking a day at a time and doing the homework assignments you will see positive results.
My RESULT: I feel better than I have felt in years. Also, I'm having sex like a 30 year old. I walk or jog 3 to 5 miles each day. I enjoy an active life style, boating, fishing, scuba and other outdoor activities.
Recently when ask by someone in my church how I managed to feel so good. I recomended that they study and work thru Dr. Runels' materials. This book is a great introduction to the principles he teaches. I also recomend that you study his website.
There he tells about his medical pratice and shares his thoughts and opinions about hormone repacement, recent research on growth hormone, smallpox vaccine, blood pressure medicine, the dection of chemical warfare agents and more. He strives to stay on the cutting edge of his field. There is much one can learn from DR. Runels.

I felt that she had been looking over my shoulder my whole life. I came across this book in a small book store since then I have bought 2 more copies for my sensitive friends. The ways she suggest to help are so insightful they can be used for the rest of my life. I read it once and now I am going back and reading again, slower this time. This book brought me peace with myself. It was the first eye opening to see that although I am different there is nothing wrong with me. Many sensitives lived with this secret that deep down they knew something was amiss. What this book will help you understand is the difference is a gift not a weakness. This was a a very good read. I was so caught up in this story I couldnt put it down. ANSHON had mad love for his BIG SIS. And was dead set on getting revenge against those responsible for confining his big sister TAMMY to a wheelchair. Though TAMMY tried her best to get ANSHON to let it go, get out the game and get his life together ANSHON had a hard head, wich we all know makes for a soft behind. My favorite charachters were ANSHON and Fe,Fe the neighborhood crackhead who makes the descision to turn her life around. In doing this she also starts to turn a few heads including the head of her best friends man ANSHON!!!! THIS BOOK IS HOT!!!! The only reason I gave it four stars instead of five is because I didnt like the ending. BUT GO AHEAD TRY IT I KNOW YOU'LL LIKE IT!!!!

I like this book alot mainly because Fe-Fe did what most drug addicted females believe can't be done it gave hope and I believe this book should be in every body's rehab center. This book is inspiring and entertaining with uplifting stories of women affected by cancer. The only thing I found discouraging is that so many people facing cancer don't question some of the treatments they receive and do more digging into what is available, rather than just giving into the status quo and taking whatever their doctor gives them without question. I am an alternative medicine fan, so of course, I was hoping to see more accounts of women taking the initiative in this book and opting for more alternative treatments, which wasn't there. One reviewer mentioned breast cancer as possibly a "gift of higher understanding," which I just don't see. As a matter of fact, I can't see any cancer as being a "gift" of any sort.

"The Breast Cancer Book of Strength and Courage" was a wonderful source of comfort and encouragement. Having been recently diagnosed with breast cancer, I could truly relate to the feelings other women in the book experienced. I too had to make so many decisions in a short period of time. As I read the book, I realized how many other women had been in that same terrifying place, and how many women met the challenge of healing head on. Every woman's cancer is different, but the feelings that accompany the daignosis are the same. I truly appreciate the honesty and the willingness of all of the survivors who shared their stories. I would highly recommend the book to all women with breast cancer and to their families.
