5 out of 5 stars fun book; not for every child.......2007-09-28

1) I loved this book when I was a child. I recommend it because it has the ability to communicate a slice of Chinese culture in a fun way.

2) After reading the reviews posted by others, I agree the intense themes should only be exposed to kids who can absorb them. This "intensity", however, is no different from a Grimms Fairy Tale.

3) As for those offended, I am unhappy this was your experience. However, as I understand it, this story is based on a Chinese story, not some Eurocentric plot to minimize Asians. Complaining about the "ethnicity" would be similar to accusing Asian bookmakers of Caucasian slurs for books featuring rustic cowboys, or "Mean White Stepmothers".

4) I do not deny the discomfort of those who were mocked due to race. Your injustice, however, was only exposed by the reading of a book with Asian elements; not created from it. I suggest this book, as any book of Asian lore, will always pose the risk of exposing latent bigotry and be used as an insult. (i.e. Nuwa, ShanHaiJing narratives, etc.) This does not mean our children (or ourselves) should not be exposed to such stories; but rather parents have a responsibility in affirming other persons intrinsic value.

5) Personally, I distinctly (and warmly) remember, after reading it, having the feeling that China was interesting and/or had interesting stories to tell. It fed my general interests in the Chinese culture. It never needed to require the interpretation that Asians were somehow beneath me. That interpretation has to come from elsewhere, and THAT is the problem.

1 out of 5 stars Liking it Doesn't Mean that You Should Use it in Your Classroom.......2007-07-23

I agree that texts should be judged according to the time they were created. People may continue to love this book as a book from their childhood.

Nevertheless, it is irresponsible to use this book as an example of Chinese culture and literature in today's schools. One glance at the illustrations lets you know that charactures of Chinese people are portrayed, showing the most racist of stereotypes (well beyond the stereotype of "they all look alike" although the audience for the execution seems to be peopled with men who look just like the 5 Chinese brothers). Also see for example, the bright yellow used for the flesh tone (indeed the only color used in the book). Or the drawing of the executioner. Or the mother (who is identical to the brothers, but with a different hairdo).

I would recommend the following articles for teachers looking to select authentic Chinese and Chinese American literature (as well as Japanese and Japanese American and Korean and Korean American literature):

5 out of 5 stars As good as it was as a kid!!!!.......2007-05-13

This is a clever imaginative book. It was a great flashback to reread it again and a fun gift.

5 out of 5 stars Not only is this a classic... It's a TIMELESS Classic.......2007-03-24

This story truly spans generations. It truly is timely and TIMELESS. I enjoyed it as a child and gave it to my son who enjoyed it just as much as I did, if not more. He's nine now and still reads it just as often as he did when I first gave it to him. Only now he can read it by himself.

The story of the five chinese brothers and their "powers" or "abilities" inspired me to get past my own uniqueness. (I was born with spina bifida). This book allowed me to be different and told me it was not only OKAY, it was FABULOUS! My difference gave me power... and it still does. My son's own differences are now his strengths as well, thanks in part to this book.

This book is a great one to grow up on... and gives you one heck of a memory to share with kids and grandkids.

Anyone who is offended or mortified or scarred in any way by this book had problems before they started reading this book. Don't blame imagination. Blame the inability to stand so close to the flame that imagination ignites in a child!

1 out of 5 stars This is a CHILDREN'S book ????? .......2007-01-30

I will strongly diagree with most of the reviews here. This is not a classic, this is a horrific book for a child. Let's see, the story starts with a boy drowning just because he did not obey. Then FIVE times we see a death sentence attempted to be carried out on an innocent person. And the moral of the story seems to be that if you are found guilty, try to trick the judge. Sorry, this is not something that will be in my house.

Great book encouraging boys to be chivalrous and pure. Should be on the shelf of every young family.

5 out of 5 stars Great Christian adventure book.......2007-09-01

I purchased this book for my 3 year old nephew. I read through it and it seems a bit old for him. The recommended age is 8 so I wasn't surprised. However I do think he will enjoy the story and his mom can explain things to him as she reads it to him. I have the "Princess and the Kiss" for my 4 year old daughter and she enjoys it very much.

5 out of 5 stars Great story.......2007-07-26

Wonderful book about doing the right thing. Kids love the story and the pictures are beautiful and interesting.

5 out of 5 stars How can a young man keep his way pure?.......2007-04-26

This book reminded me of the great Christian classic by Bunyan The Pilgrim's Progress. Armed only with the scroll (the Word of God), this young squire must slay the dragon and rescue the lantern for his kingdom. The scroll is the light for his path, his sword to slay the dragon, and the tool to see clearly in the darkest of times. While others pursued the treasures of this world, the young squire held fast to the treasure of God's Word and was victorious in his quest. The book is based on one of my favorite verses in Scripture, Psalm 119:9, "How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your Word." Highly recommended, especially for young elementary aged boys.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent! A must read for all males!.......2007-01-23

This is a must read for ALL males not just young boys! Oh how things might have been different for those men who struggled through their lives with the virtue of purity if they had only read a book like this one at a young age! Read this to your little boys! Women, buy it for the men in your life! Women, read it, too! And men, women, boys, (and girls) don't just read it once. Read it to help keep you on the right road, the road of purity. Parents, your children depend on you to have a pure heart. They do what you do more than do what you say. Take it from me, I'm a school counselor. I hear EVERYTHING. A pure heart (and mind) is a happy heart.

This book has adventure, suspense, and romance! You won't be disappointed!

4 out of 5 stars A medieval jewel........2004-03-24

I think A Bishop's Tale, set in the late medieval period, is a very good read. The author, Margaret Frazer, did a great job with research, setting and characterization.
She built believable characters, with flaws and depth. I can't wait to start on the rest of the series.

3 out of 5 stars Not all that exciting!.......2003-09-01

I've been reading through Margaret Frazer's series with Sister Frevisse, and I found this book not very exciting and there's not much mystery here. Normally I enjoy Ms. Frazer's books, but this one was not my favourite. In this book Sister Frevisse is called to a funeral for her beloved uncle, Thomas Chaucer. While at the funeral feast one of the nobles that is present gets in an argument and says, "May God stike me dead, if what I say isn't the truth!" Then sure enough he is overcome with some sort of attack and can't catch his breath. He later dies from this and Sister Frevisse is asked by a distant relative (who is a bishop) to find out what actually happened. Of course, it wasn't a sign of God, and she does discover the killer, but so had I. I figured it out long before the ending of the book. I will continue to read this series, but I do hope that it gets interesting again.

In 1987, Craig Harline, professor of history at Brigham Young University, and Eddy Put, senior assistant at the Belgian National Archives, struck gold. In a dusty Belgian archive, they found a detailed daybook kept by Mathias Hovius, who served as archbishop of Mechelen (part of modern Belgium) from 1596 to 1620. Harline and Put spent the next 13 years turning that daybook into A Bishop's Tale: Mathias Hovius Among His Flock in Seventeenth-Century Flanders, an extraordinary work of historical biography.

It would be difficult to overstate the pleasures of this book. Its historical method is unusually accessible and sophisticated. ("In seeking to understand a world long past, we found it highly illuminating to begin with a single human being rather than a large abstraction such as 'society.'") Its style is straightforward and novelistic, with a wealth of detail that humanizes its exotic subjects. (For instance, the archbishop had "no protruding hairs on his upper lip, lest while celebrating Mass he obstruct the blood of Christ.") Even individual sentences often display a stunning, wide-angled perspective on individual events. (An explosion "sent stones rocketing up to two miles away, flattened houses, damaged churches, killed 300 people, wounded 150, and decapitated fish in the river.") And its characters--monks, nuns, millers, peasants, saints, who incidentally illustrate major themes of the Reformation-- are vital and ribald and doomed and striving. Harline and Put say they chose to write about the Reformation because of "its massive rupturing of a seemingly eternal premise of Christianity: that it was one." In an afterword, Harline and Put explain that "Never before had there been such widespread teaching, preaching, and fighting over souls, or such excellent preservation on paper of these efforts. Rich documents are often the fruit of zeal." The authors' own zeal to show readers the world of this bishop has created a very rich book about Reformation Christianity. --Michael Joseph Gross

Book Description

This absorbing book takes us back to the busy, colorful world of a Netherlandish Catholic bishop and his flock from 1596 to 1620. Based upon the recently discovered daybook of Mathius Hovius, the book focuses not only on his life but also on key events and characters of the period. Episodes in the lives of monks, nuns, pilgrims, peasants, saints, and others bring to life the experience of religion during the Counterreformation.

5 out of 5 stars A Portal Through Time.......2000-12-29

As a layman who likes to study history, I enthusiastically give this book a rating of five stars. Many history books give broad descriptions and interpretations of trends and events. Others attempt to popularize or modernize history by interpreting old events from the perspective of the late 20th century. "The Bishop's Tale" does none of this. Instead, it virtually transports the reader back to Flanders in the late 1500s and early 1600s, treating him to a small but rich slice of history in a small but fascinating corner of Europe. The authors -- who were fortunate enough to have found one volume of an extensive journal kept by the Archbishop of Mechelen during this period -- provide us with a series of wonderfully detailed pictures of religious life in what was then known as the Spanish Netherlands. Each chapter forms a separate window through time that provides the reader with a close-up view of the goings-on surrounding a specific issue, event, or person. The common thread running through all sixteen chapters is the archbishop and his efforts to build a stable Catholic community in a turbulent time and place. The authors don't try to overly interpret events or force them to fit into some sort of grand theoretical framework, as do many academic historians. Instead, it seems that Craig Harline and Eddy Put want to directly expose the reader to history in a way that enables him to develop a good "feel" for what it must have been like to be Catholic and Flemish around 1600. I found myself wanting to read the book slowly, so that I could savor every page.

4 out of 5 stars Not entirely satisfying.......2000-11-30

In the reviews I've read, this book has received nothing but praise. In many ways, this is an excellent work of academic research. The authors show sensitivity and a deep understanding of the institutional framework within which archbishop Hovius could operate. Most emphasis is put on the human and local particularities controlling the relations between an archbishop and the man and women manning the diverse strata of the ecclesiastical hierarchy. The preponderance on the human side of archbishop's dealings with the people surrounding him lead to excellent small stories which are impressively placed in the wider context of the political and religious strife of early 17th century Europe. Moreover, the book is very well written. It was an easy read.

Yet, despite all the book's cleverness, I grew increasingly uncomfortable while reading. Harline and Put have written a book on religious life in late 16th/early 17th century Europe. Still, I have not read much about religion. In fact, in this book, religion comes out as a very mechanical thing. We read about cardinals, nuncios, priests, rituals, processions, pilgrimages etc. But we do not get a glimpse of what it could have meant to *be* a Christian in this particular time in history. We do not read how Hovius (could have) *lived* his religion. We get no sense at all of a religious feeling which - unlike today - must have been overly present everywhere. Instead, the narrative is littered with much misplaced irony on the nature of christianity or even religion. Harline and Put consider the Catholic Church as nothing more than a big bureaucracy. Hovius, travelling around his bishopric, is portrayed as the 16/17th century version of a district area manager of Coca Cola, trying to reach his production quota for next year, and fighting to protect his market share against competitors. The book is a product of the 21st century. It might easily be used as a leadership guideline, to be read by management consultants and managers.

3 out of 5 stars Some were good, some were bad.......2003-09-17

I would give "The Year's Best Fantasy and Horror Tenth Annual Collection" 3 stars because when I read this book some of the stories really got my attention but some stories were too dull and never seemed to get anywhere and I would go onto the story without finishing the one I was reading. Some personal favorites of mine were Tanith Lee's "The Reason for not Going to the Ball", "The Last Rainbow" by Parke Godwin and Stephen Dedman's "Never Seen by Waking Eyes" although I enjoyed many more. But I was dissapointed upon reading the story by Neil Gaiman because I usually find his stories creative and chilling. I always love Thomas Canty's artwork on all the books he illustrates and on this collection the artwork is one of my favorite he's made because it is both grotesque and beautiful. And I just want to say to the other folks that wrote in other reviews for this book who were writing how horrible it is that they should just take another look and see how much work goes into those antholigies with the writers and editors and artists and publishers and they should think about what they are saying and hope they will be more appreciative for other books like this in the future. Bravo, Terri Windling! Bravo Ellen Datlow, Bravo Thomas Canty! I look forward to more of your collaboration antholigies in the future.

1 out of 5 stars Pretentious and Overblown.......2002-12-04

Ohhhhh.....Where to begin? I'll start with co-editor Terri Windling. Her opening essay on the year in Fantasy was almost enough to make me hurl down the book in irritation. If she said "Magic Realism" one more time....I lost track at 37. Unbearable. Just unbearable. I have a pretty steadfast rule that, no matter how bad a book may be, I read EVERY SINGLE WORD. Every word. No matter what. I had to skim through Windling's essay, because it was either skim or put my fist through the wall. "Magic Realism. Magic Realism. Magic Realism." Ugh.

Ellen Datlow's essay is slightly more interesting, and the sections on Media and Comic Books were very well done. Now, on to the stories themselves.

I've read a few of the previous Year's Best volumes, and it always bothered me how the book slants towards Fantasy over Horror (Terri Winling is the Fantasy Editor, Ellen Datlow the Horror Editor), but this edition is WAY over the top. Out of 35 stories, Windling's name is on over twenty. Her tastes run towards oblique, overwritten, pretentious tripe, and strange poetry. One of her selections, Gerald Vizenor's Oshkiwiinag: Heartlines on the Trickster Express put me beyond the newfound sacrilige of skimming. I actually had to skip the remainder of the story after five endless, pointless pages. I have never read such strange shizznit in my whole life. I literally had NO idea what he was writing about. Ugh. Another Windling pick (Among The Handlers, by Michael Bishop) is endlessly long, written in an awful hillbilly dialect, and is neither Fantasy or Horror, but IS god-awful. I'll avoid Vizenor and Bishop like the plague, thanks to these stories. We also get other Windling-picked classics like Birthdream, (A poem about childbirth, not Horror or Fantasy, but also awful. If I wanted bad poems, I'd get a poetry book.) Caribe Magico, by Gabriel Garcia Marquez (A travelogue. For God's sake, a travelogue! Not Horror, not Fantasy...but as Windling says...MAGIC REALISM! Code for "Pretentious story that makes no sense."), and Beckoning Nightframe by Terry Dowling, about a woman who is scared of her neighbor's open window. FOR 16 PAGES! UGH. Her only decent choice is Little Beauty's Wedding, by Chang Hwang. It's an unforgettable story.

Ellen Datlow fares better in her choices. The Secret Shih Tan (By Graham Masterson), Never Seen By Waking Eyes (By Stephen Dedman), and the grotesque Three Bears pastiche "Ursus Triad, Later" (By Kathe Koja & Barry N. Malzberg) are all incredible, and I'm glad to have discovered writers I wasn't familiar with, but the overall feeling I had when reading the book was one of irritation with the all-encompassing pretentiousness of the package. I'd say the stinky outweighed the good by 90%. I'm VERY sorry that I've already purchased the next four volumes....But at least I've learned to skim & skip!

3 out of 5 stars Interesting, But Not Very Horrorific.......2001-06-15

Interesting collection of writers, some famous and some unknowns, but all in all not a real page turner. Some stories I couldn't even finish I got so bored. Some were so good I got goose pimples. Go figure.

5 out of 5 stars Dark carnival stories probe the limits of humanity.......2001-02-13

It's difficult to easily categorize these dark works of fantasy: they are short stories written by such notables as Ray Bradbury, Michael Bishop, Nina Kiriki Hoffman and others, blending literature and art and all based on the strange kinetic sculpture Crowded After Hours by Lisa Snellings. Dark carnival stories probe the limits of humanity.

17 new prose short stories of the PHANTOM! High adventure and intrigue in the African jungle, on the high seas, and in the city! There is always justice that needs to be served, whether it's in the present... or the past. Nearly five centuries ago, during a daring raid at sea, pirates took the life of merchant ship captain Christopher Standish. In the heat of the pitched battle aboard the ship, Standish's son was knocked overboard to wash ashore on a remote beach where he was found by a friendly pygmy tribe. After stumbling upon the body of his father's killer, young Standish swore an oath on the murderer's skull to devote his life, and the lives of his sons and their sons, to the destruction of piracy, greed, cruelty and injustice. To the outside world, this man, seemingly immortal, has always worn the mask. As the legend grew, it transcended the life of any one mortal. And that legend became THE PHANTOM!
