Book Description
Zacharias invites readers to follow him on this journey through his life and into the lives of others, and see how he has become more convinced with each year that Jesus Christ is the one who came to give us life to the fullest and to point us to the freedom and beauty of truth for everyone--easterner or westerner--all over the world.

A Life of Exceptional Experiences Dosed w/ Humility.......2007-09-20
When this book first came out, I wasn't as interested as I was reading RZ's other more apologetic books. This was more of a biography, very anecdotal, but the more I read it, I saw how so many of what he's seen and experienced were just microcosms of so many worldviews. He himself was a huge cynic, but after his regenerative experience at the hospital, he was led to really explore who God was and His message through Jesus, as well as test the seemingly competitive other world views. And he quotes it accurately, saying the more he learned about other world views, the more beautiful Jesus became to him.
Sometimes his biography was comparable to Forrest Gump, with fortunate exceptional destiny, with the exception that Ravi had immense intellectual potential. But he has really humbly been appointedly woven into the lives of many other prominent theological giants, having also crossed paths with world leaders. It's just amazing to realize all he's been through, but only because of the grace of God...continually guiding His path, and using him, from great revivals to personal intimate testimonies.
And amidst all the glorious stories are his heartfelt intimate thoughts of his family and his closest friends, some who died of age, and some who died spreading the gospel. I'm not ashamed to say how much this book has moved me...it is probably one of the most personal books for me...
this book is definitely rich w/ great lessons, great experience, and great proof that God is really there in the shadows, slowly revealing and affirming His will in our lives at the duly appointed time.
it IS an exceptional life, a great book i sadly put down, wishing there was more to read.
Great!!!.......2007-07-05
Ravi Zacharias truly is a man sent by God to bridge the gaps between East and West. As I read his fantastic story, I was amazed at how much of his story encouraged me in my own Christian walk. He went from being a teen who didn't like to read to being one of the most read apologist in the world.
As I continued to read his story, I was amazed at how much he does and how much of his family life was sacrificed by preaching God's word. The Lord gave him an understanding wife and beautiful children who understand his calling.
When he mentioned how over the years, he had lost his sense of humor because of the serious of apologetics, I felt sad for him. Preaching the Gospel is serious business and it is just that important but I believe God has blessed him richly.
The personal accounts of his friends who have paid for their beliefs with their lives were so inspiring and made me extremely reflective on my own Christian walk? Would I be willing to face all kinds of danger for Christ? I hope I never have to find out.
The book especially gives the reader a view of Eastern mentality and life. It was so vibrant and full of some many images and sounds. For the Western Christian, it is very important to understand the Easter mindset if we are to evangelize to our Eastern brothers.
I wish I could just shake Mr. Zacharias hand and just sit in his presence for an hour. I thank God for him and hope that he continues the good work.
Interesting life. To God be the glory........2007-06-19
Oh! That more Indians would come to salvation and evanglize their country!
This book should have been a biography instead of an auto-biography because you can almost sense the reluctance for Ravi to reveal the full extent of the way God has used him. On a more negative note, if Indian Christians keep moving away from India, who is going to evanglize the country?
An Eye-Opening Pleasure of a Read.......2007-05-02
This enormously vivid and readable book will capture your interest within the first few pages and keep it until the last. Mr. Zacharias has lived life fully, from his humble beginnings on a busy Indian street in his native land to the most prestigious professional and academic arenas all over the world--and met Christ on the way. In fact, that life-changing meeting is the core of what made him successful and motivated, and does so to this day. His is a wonderful story, especially the insights and anecdotes he gives us about India and its people, and of course how God came from "the shadows" to forever change his life. Ever think that God doesn't care about you? That he's not involved in your life? Read this book and listen closely--he may be speaking to you right here!
How Refreshing.......2007-03-08
Zacharias' book will either be life-changing or life-affirming for the reader lucky enough to stumble across this amazing account of a life that saw so much pain and joy. To go along on his journey, watching him go from his desperate youth and into his successful and meaningful adult life is incredible. As someone who has been immersed in a Christian lifestyle her entire life, I find it remarkable that someone can come from such beginnings and end up the man that Ravi Zacharias has become. It really makes me think about how much of the Western experience I take for granted. Ravi is not only passionate about his faith, but he provides an intellectual basis for it as well, something that is often missing in evangelism today. The blend of Eastern and Western cultures presented in this book are extremely significant and helpful. This has caused me to take a new approach to different cultures and unbelievers. He is a living example of walking in someone else's shoes. I could say countless things to praise his life's work, but it seems to me that Zacharias would want any glory to be given to God. After reading this, that is how I want the things I do to be remembered...for the glory of God. I cannot wait to read more from this talented evangelist!

Pure Parker, as always.......2007-10-03
Pure Spencer, crisp and witty in dialogue, exciting in plot, delightful to read. And, as always, full of action, suspense, and excellent plot. It's always hard to put down a Robert Parker book. This one is another of his masterpieces. Don't miss it.
All the world is a stage . . ........2007-07-22
Susan has become a board member for a theatre in Port City, a shabby district on the water front that contains a Chinese ghetto filled with many illegal immigrants, including the Death Dragons, a gang that is run by the dai low for the Kwan Chang tong. The dai low in this case is Ronnie Lu, whose wife Rikki is on the board with Susan. Susan brings Spenser to a board meeting one day because the Artistic Director of the board - Demetrius Christopoulous - believes he is being stalked and wishes Spenser's protection.
When one of the actors is murdered during a production later that night, Spenser's priorities shift to finding the murderer; however, no one knows much about the murder victim - Craig Sampson - and certainly no one can come up with a reason for his demise. However, as soon as Spenser begins nosing around in the area, Ronnie Lu shows up with a couple of young Death Dragons to ask Spenser to butt out or face the consequences. This, of course, just makes Spenser decide to call in Hawk and Vinnie Morris for back up.
The addition of Ming Lei to the team for her linguistic skills is something I hope will be permanent. She adds good chemistry. A side plot with a new house Spenser and Susan buy that they are fixing up makes a nice change of pace once and a while during the book. A third thread with another actor - Jocelyn Colby - claiming first to be stalked and then disappearing altogether with a videotape soon showing up at Spenser's office showing her bound to a chair, adds a note of intrigue.
All in all a nice, well-written book. Strong recommend from me.
Good Spenser novel.......2007-06-24
Robert Parker books are always a good read. Quick, snappy and entertaining, I enjoy them immensely and Walking Shadow is no exception. The book opens with Spenser and Susan, his girlfriend, attending a play in a nearby small coastal town where Susan is on the board of directors. During the performance an actor is shot and killed on stage. Hawk and Vinnie are enlisted to help Spenser find the killer. During their investigation, they discover the small town is not as placid as it seems and the rest of the story is vintage Robert Parker with a few unexpected twists and turns.
I love Spenser novels for their humor and integrity; Spenser and Hawk always win, good triumphs over evil, Spenser is always faithful to Susan and Pearl the dog is always the darling.
Average Spenser.......2007-06-09
I very much enjoy the work of Robert B. Parker, and even his lesser books are quite entertaining. WALKING SHADOW is a decent Spenser mystery, set in the world of theater and Chinatown. This novel has all the strengths of Parker's books: snappy dialogue, lean writing, and politically incorrect humor.
The major downside of Parker's later novels is repetition. If you've read a lot of them, you notice that Parker often reuses certain types of characters and situations. As a result, very little happens in this novel that hasn't happened in past Spenser books. Parker does focus on the Chinese immigrant community in Massachusetts, but most of the Chinese characters are portrayed as caricatures, rather than three-dimensional human beings. In the end, I just didn't find this aspect of the story that interesting.
If you already like Parker's style of writing, you should enjoy this one. Otherwise, my advice is to skip WALKING SHADOW, and go for the early Spenser novels or the books in Parker's Jesse Stone series.
Who's Rudnicki?.......2007-03-02
I love the Spenser series, I've just started reading/listening to them. The best audio book so far is "Small Vices" read by Burt Reynolds. I've decided that the successs of the Spenser audio books depends on who's recording them, because the guy who reads this latest one ("Walking Shadow") in a word - STINKS!!!! His last name's Rudnicki and he sounds like a 12 year old, not at all like the tough but lovable detective we all know, not believable at all! Thank God I already love these stories, which is the only reason I gave it 2 stars - otherwise it would've been 1 star. Don't waste your money, read the book instead.

A book to savor.......2005-01-01
Diane Wind Wardell brings us a glowing picture of Janet Mentgen, who developed and teaches Healing Touch (HT), and established the Healing Touch International organization. Many nurses and other caregivers are using HT, which includes a variety of interventions in addition to hand and distant healing.
At the same time, this book is a marvelously detailed journal of the development of Wardell as a healer and HT teacher.
This is the sort of book one likes to dip into, ponder its lessons, and return to savor again and to chew on. The lack of index and references will hinder such deeper study.
Substance and process.......2004-04-19
This is an experiential tale of being the "sorcerer's apprentice" written in a stream of consciousness style which envelops the reader in a sense of the experience of the healing touch training.
A Fine Piece of Art on Healing.......2001-03-08
Combining her poetic and clinical writing style, Diane Wardell has captured the essence of multi-dimensional healing found within the Healing Touch certification program. Wardell is both courageous and strong as she teaches and inspires while telling the story of Healing Touch and its founder, Janet Mentgen. Wardell's sensitivity and at times personal journey vulnerabilities guide the reader through the essence of healing in its purest and truest form of a compassionate mother teaching her child about life and its challenges. I applaud the author for the courage to open herself up to the world and especially her world, the medical community. White Shadow is the first book I would recommend for anyone who is called to hands-on healing arts. It contains a wealth of knowledge and wisdom for Healing Touch practitioners as well, in training and certified. On a final note, I find White Shadow provides a spiritual framework of unity to those of us within the Healing Touch community but also touches all of us as healers around the world in a way which far exceeds our peer relationships and professional training.
Healing Touch.......2001-02-21
Diane Wardell has written a very moving account of her mentor and her own life changing experiences. In White Shadow Ms. Wardell has given us a wonderful insight into the art of healing touch and the lives of those who are dedicated to its practice. While the book is directed towards health professionals and those who strive to acquire the ancient skill it is also enlightening to anyone who wishes to learn more about healing touch. White Shadow is a very personal account of the people involved in bringing this art into modern times and western medicine. I was very taken up by this story, educated, and touched. Wardell has given us an opportunity to see how an individual can awaken the healing abilities that lie within us all. I recommend it to anyone who is interested in personal and world wide healing.

Book Description
When Lloyd Cotton hears that Sheila Barnes is consistently beaten by her daddy, he offers her a room and a job cleaning up around his dairy farm. Despite physical deformity, poverty, and years of abuse, Sheila manages to see the silver lining in every cloud–and her bright spirit touches everyone in the Cotton family, including young Annette who finds an enchanting Best Friend. Stoney Barnes, the handsome boy who milks the cows, is especially taken with Sheila. And when they marry, it seems that God has finally given her the good graces she deserves.
But in a cruel twist of fate, Sheila’s body is found in the cornfields. Soon the little town of Zebulon, Mississippi, is awash in scandal. Who would want the innocent young woman dead? Her alcoholic father, her opinionated husband, or perhaps the faithfully married Lloyd Cotton, about whom unsavory rumors swirl?
Surprising secrets will crack open a rural community, and more than one family will suffer in the telling.

Truly enjoyable reading experience ..........2007-04-06
I was very surprised by this novel as I do not care for murder mysteries; and am usually not interested in Southern fiction. This is both of those things, yet also in a separate category too - just plain, good fiction. These characters were so well realized, the story sad and hopeful at the same time. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, although it definitely left me sad at Sheila's cruel, short life ... and through it all, she was so positive and kind. It's not always an easy book to read emotionally, but it's very hard to put down. I finished it in 2 days and it lingered well after that. Highly recommended.
A Treasure!.......2007-01-24
You cannot put this book down! What a wonderful story that stays with you!
Walking Through Shadows.......2006-12-15
This is a most unusual murder story that is well written, with "real-life" characters. You get to know them all intimately and feel their pain at what happened. I had two suspects in my mind throughout the book, but ended up being wrong. Now THAT's a good mystery!
I'll Never Forget This Book!.......2005-03-28
WOW! I absolutely loved this book. What beautiful writing! I still can't get Shelia out of my mind or her poor misused body. Read this book if you don't read anything else this year. Such a wonderful coming of age story & a plethora of other subjects. Please more Ms. Marshall. I am looking forward to all of your novels.
STUNNING WRITING.......2002-12-18
Bev Marshall's first novel, WALKING THROUGH SHADOWS, is a breathtaking creation. Set in a small town in rural Mississippi just before World War II, the story's obvious center is the murder of a young woman, Sheila Barnes. Sheila is one of the most unforgettable characters I've run across in recent years - just seventeen at the time of her death, married for around a year, Sheila is uneducated but full of unconventional wisdom, which she bestows gently on those around her as their needs dictate. She is a gift in their varied lives - and they all come to realize it in their own time.
Sheila comes to work at the dairy farm run by the Cotton family, and soon becomes the Best Friend of ten-year-old Annette (her caps) - the two girls grow as close as family, and at one point Annette's mother, Rowena, comments that `Annette loves Sheila like a blood sister'. Sheila is seemingly completely without a formal education - she comes from a family of numberless children, loomed over by her brutal father. The beatings - and other abuse - she receives from him on a regular basis are the central reason in her leaving home, to seek work and shelter at the Cottons'. She is also possessed of a physical anomaly - a hump on her back - although she never lets it interfere with her image of herself or the way in which she attempts to live her life. It is at the Cottons' dairy, where she works, that she meets Stoney Barnes - despite her `deformity', he falls in love with her (and she with him), and after a short courtship, they marry. The abuse she suffered at the hands of her father continues sporadically - and Stoney is guilty of inflicting physical pain on her as well. When he reports Sheila missing early one morning, and her body is found in the Cottons' cornfield, the investigation that ensues reveals things about almost everyone involved that each one would have most certainly preferred to be left in the dark. The revelations strain friends and family and community - the outcome is both expected and surprising, and soul shaking.
The story unfolds gracefully through various viewpoints - a technique that Marshall employs extremely well. The author endows each of the characters with a distinctive personality and - even more importantly, I think - a unique, completely believable voice. Rather than simply describe each character to the reader, the author skillfully allows them to illuminate not only themselves but also each other. Their narratives - which vary in length, but grow shorter and switch back and forth more in the second half of the book - overlap in both subjects and time frames, much as if the reader were privy to individual tellings of the same story, walking from room to room, eavesdropping. There is a subtlety in Marshall's method here that is a wonder to behold - things are revealed to the reader as they are revealed to those in the story, allowing the mysterious aspects of Sheila's brutal murder to be opened like a flower. The suspense is palpable and deftly controlled.
There are lessons to be learned here - as well as a story that entertains - about a plethora of subjects: love, honor, family, pain, abuse, friendship, faith, race, healing, and more...including magic. I'm not speaking of the type of magic that is performed on the stage - I'm speaking of the more indefinable magic that lives and breathes in the touch of a friend's hand, in the stories they share that delight and instruct, in the pain that we cause each other and in the healing we can inspire. If this leads you to believe that this is a soporific tale, don't be deceived - this is fine writing of the highest order, and a story that reveals not only the innermost workings of its characters, but of all of us.

Hope for your heart.......2007-05-12
This book is an excellent one for anyone who is struggling with grief. It may be that you are grieving a loved one, your own failing health, or like me, raising a disabled child you wished was whole. The comfort of this book comes not just by reading of the tragedies in the lives of the authors, but in the ultimate truths that Ken Ham and Carl Wieland point out. It is my favorite gift to give someone who is going through a difficult time.
Gripping and on target.......2003-02-19
It's easy to talk about what happens in the bad times. It is more of a challenge to walk the talk. Having a biblical worldview equips you for the tough times. Ironically, skeptics who ask "if there is a good God why is there so much evil" often miss the point that evil only exists as an objective reality if there is a God who defines good in the first place. Authors Ken Ham and Dr. Carl Wieland show how evil exists as a consequence of human sin, and show through their personal experiences how this understanding gives the strength to overcome profound tragedy.
Without giving too much away, this includes a horrible head-on collision that shattered medical doctor Carl Wieland's body, as well as the Ham families' recent experience with the untimely loss of his brother due to a degenerative brain disease. My wife was able to relate to the experience of the first, having been broad-sided by a driver running a red light and having suffered permanent back injuries as a result. This is not fluff Christianity, and if it does seem stilted at times in the latter half, it is only because the authors have been talking the right talk for so long they've got it down pat, which is not a bad thing.
A profoundly written and powerfully inspiring spiritual read.......2002-12-05
Walking Through Shadows: Finding Hope In A World Of Pain by Ken Ham and Carl Wieland is an engaging and thought-provoking compilation of true accounts of personal suffering (such as everyone has or will experience in the course of ordinary life), ranging from the loss of a loved one, to the slow destruction of health and life through incurable disease. Specifically written to help Christian readers understand why such horrid things exist in God's world, and expressing a deep admiration for a God who offers comfort and wisdom to his people for the purpose of for learning to cope with tragedy and to look forward to the future, Walking Through Shadows is a profoundly written and powerfully inspiring spiritual read which is confidently recommended to a Christian readership regardless of denominational affiliation or theological orientation.
Succinct and staunchly Biblically based.......2002-09-07
This the most excellent treatise on human suffering and the effect of original sin I have ever read. Succinct
and staunchly Biblically based, "Walking Though Shadows" helped me to assemble many fractured
thoughts in my own experiences. In August of 2000 my father went home to be with the Lord after 6 weeks
in a coma following surgery. Thirteen months later our newborn baby boy followed him into glory. They
lay beside each other now awaiting resurrection. Many of the thoughts in this book had begun to formulate
in my mind, as I stated earlier, though intense study of the Word. Thank you Ken and Carl for your Biblical
presentation. It is so very important that we know the Bible teaching that we live in a cursed world in
corruptible bodies, and that we should not be swept away by any wind of false doctrine. But praise be to
the Lord, one day corruption will change to incorruption and mortal to immortality. And then the
culmination of all the promises of Christ. This book is a must read, especially if you are ensconced in the
belief of "faith healing", i.e., that lack of healing = lack of faith. This is not to say that God does not heal
today. He most certainly does, as is demonstrated in "Walking Though Shadows". May the comfort of the
Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.

A Thousand Splendid Suns
ASIN: 0292716575 |
Book Description
In the preface to her memoir, Ercenia "Alice" Cedeño recalls the secrecy and turmoil that marked her youth: "I spent most of my growing years mad at my mother and wanting her to change to fit in with the rest of the world," she writes. "When my sisters and I wanted her to visit our friends' mothers, she would say, 'Why do people need to know other peoples' lives?' Looking back, I wonder if she was really saying, 'I don't want them to know our business.' There was so much to hide."
Now bringing those hidden memories to light,
Amá, Your Story Is Mine traces the hardship, violence, deceit, and defiance that shaped the identity of two generations of women in Alice's family. Born in the mountains of northern Mexico, Alice's mother married at age 14 into a family rife with passion that often turned to anger. After losing several infant children to disease, the young couple crossed into the United States seeking a better life.
Unfolding in a series of powerful vignettes,
Amá, Your Story Is Mine describes in captivating detail a daring matriarch who found herself having to protect her children from their own father while facing the challenges of cultural discrimination. By turns wry and tender, Alice's recollections offer a rare memoir that fully encompasses the Latina experience in the United States.
Book Description
Childhood cancer, particularly leukemia, is on the rise. Leukemia strikes one child in every 25,000, and most often does so between the ages of 3 and 7. Annually, more than 2,700 children are diagnosed with leukemia in the United States. Due to advances in biotechnology and medicine, survival rates for this once-deadly disease now stand at 80%. But the psychological effects of diagnosis, removal from school, treatment, and remission or cure, linger. Here nine long-term survivors of childhood leukemia share their vivid memories and give us insight into the physiological changes, psychosocial and educational difficulties that became a constant "shadow" in their lives. Author Nanci Sullivan provides recommendations for ways teachers, counselors and other professionals may better help young students with leukemia cope.
