3 out of 5 stars To Paradox.......2007-10-01

This is not a review, but rather a response to the last poster inquiring why the autism rate is soaring in spite of the declining thimerosol (mercury derived preservative) amount in vaccines.

As a mother of a 4 yo son with autism, I believe that autism is a multi-faceted condition. I don't believe my son's autism was caused by mercury, HOWEVER, I do believe that he may have been vaccine injured; due to the fact that he received the Hepatitis B vaccine when he was less than 24 hours old. It is my belief that in genetically predisposed children, bombarding their immature immune systems with a vaccine is PART of the autism puzzle. Think about it...exposing the immature gastointestinal system to solids before it is ready increases the risk of food allergies...wheat, milk, eggs, nut products, etc...similar analogy.

It's not that the vaccines themselves are inherently harmful; but if they are given to a system not ready to adequately handle them, therein lies the problem. The US has the most aggressive vaccination schedule in the WORLD! China has changed their vaccination schedule so as not to vacc any child under the age of two!

Just my 2 cents.

Can anyone tell me why there is less and less mercury in vaccines yet the autism rate is getting higher and higher?

2 out of 5 stars What is the fuss about ?.......2007-09-06

I dont understand why this book got the great reviews it did

I have read several books on vaccinations Dr. Neustaedter's book, Dr. Tenpennys book and done quite a bit of research on the web. This is the first book I had picked up.

My problem with Dr. Cave's book is that its not honest -- its almost silently pro-vaccination. She openly credits vaccines for reduction in diseases while its obvious that that claim is questionable. Also, her 'recommended' list of vaccines is ALMOST every one of them -- except Hep B and Chicken pox. These are the 2 easiest ones to eliminate even by a lay man. you dont need an 'expert' doctor to tell you that. Every thing else she recommends all in a slightly delayed manner (by a few months).

If Dr. Cave really want to tell you what your doctor is not, then there should be more statistics on the incidence of these diseases and the real risks of contracting them. For example : Diptheria , every one knows there have been no cases of it for 50 years in the entire western hemisphere and no cases of wild polio for over 2 decades now. That is information that should be included for each disease before recommending the vaccination finally.

Also, she has no chapters on immune system function or the real harmful devastating effects vaccines are having on some children.

My personal opinion is Dr. Tenpennys books/dvds and Dr. Neustaedters book are far more convincing and useful.

4 out of 5 stars A Very Valuable Tool.......2007-09-02

I gave it four stars instead of 5 because the info is outdated. The book is great but needs to be updated-errors changed and re-released. The author gives a suggested alternate vaccination schedule to follow which is what I chose to do for my child.

Mercury may not still be in vaccines in an amount like they used to be but other chemicals are. I would suggest that the author include these things. Such examples are; MSG and formaldahyde. She touches on Aluminum but doesn't mention that vaccines are made in the tissues of other animals like Monkey Kidney tissue. She doesn't explore the problem of this DNA and RNA of these animals sitting dormat in the human body until they are ready to reap havock on our immune system.

This was an excellant book. I really enjoyed this second book in the series. It was fast paced and I this is a fine stand alone read as well.

5 out of 5 stars Feline breeds 2 - the man within.......2007-07-09

As a lover of paranormal romances with some good sex scenes, Lora Leigh's books certainly fit the bill and then some! The idea of the human animal hybrid is not new, but I love Lora's take on the idea. My interest was piqued initially because I like wereanimal stories and I thought Lora's were of that type. I enjoyed the books (I've read a few now)and althought some of the sex scenes went further than I was used to (or quite comfortable with) I can see that they fit the context of the storyline. I will certainly continue to read this author.

5 out of 5 stars 21st Century Woman.......2007-07-07

Tabor and Roni's story is off the hook! Roni and Taber is the newest Breed couple hit with the mating frenzy. It makes Tabor all he man and Roni strong and fiesty. One of the most memorable lines for me was when Roni demanded Taber to tell her what gave him the right to allow her to do something. Taber response is truly the tone for the whole book...."When I took you to the floor and mounted you, I took the right to protect you as well. Mate."

Although you can read this book out of the series order, I highly recommend reading Callan's story first in Tempting the Beast and segue into this one.

The erotic scenes involves [...] - so if this makes you blush.
And the romance scenes are so compassionate. I especially appreciate how Leigh brings up other characters from other books in this series which gives you the sense of really being a part of their family and their world... also you are hooked in reading their story as well.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyed Breeds 2 .......2007-07-05

I really enjoyed reading this book. It has an excellent blend of exotic, romance and action to keep you interested to the end. I can't wait to read more of the Breeds story line.

Book Description

The discovery of the Chauvet Cave in December 1994 was a remarkable event. The incredible age of the paintings, which dated back 35,000 years, and their exceptionally high quality were the source of both astonishment and admiration, and the images of mammoths, rhinoceroses, lions, bears, horses and bison have since been seen around the world.Several years ago, a team of specialists from many different disciplines, led by Jean Clottes, began the first detailed scientific study of the cave. This collaborative project has been extremely fruitful and the cave has slowly revealed many of secrets of its origins: its dating, the traces left by animals and humans, the artistic techniques that were used, and the themes of the paintings and engravings. New light has also been cast on this unique art by art historians and ethnologists. All these discoveries are published together for the first time, accompanied by numerous colour illustrations, allowing the public to share not only this new knowledge but also the thrill and fascination of looking back thousands of years into an ancient world.

4 out of 5 stars Ancient Cave art.......2007-05-15

I spent two weeks visiting many of the caves in the Perigord and Dordougne area of France. I was amazed at the quality of the work. I am an artist, and I paint horses, and these artists knew their bison, their horses, and other animals. I love having this book and others with big colored illustrations of the work because it helps me remember the experience of 1989, seeing them in person.

5 out of 5 stars I would give this glorious book 10 stars if I could...........2005-01-20

This book is simply magnificent. But first, a word about the price. The British publisher, Thames and Hudson, prices this book at 45 pounds. At this time, 1 pound = $1.8 US. I encourage you to compute the currency exchange and then shop . . . .

Now for the book. Since it's currently impossible to "look inside this book," let me share a few things about this splendid volume.

* It's 13 inches high by 11 inches wide, so it's an over-sized volume.
* 209 illustrations, 208 of which are in color
* the photos are extraordinary in clarity, lighting etc
* some of the photos span 2 pages, some take up 20-25% of a page, and there are 2 foldouts that show the breadth of a panel
* the paper is very high quality
* on average, the text takes up only part of a page. Some pages are strictly photos, sometimes a page has a column of text with photos. A few pages are entirely text. Bottom line, this is primarily a photo book, which is exactly what I was hoping it would be.
* the text is written for the general public. It's mostly descriptive, though there are some passages where interpretations are offered.
* most of the photos I've seen of the Chauvet paintings in other works are close-ups of the paintings. There are close-ups in this book too, but many of them show more of the physical backdrop for the paintings. It makes the paintings even more powerful to see them in their full "architectural" setting
* there are a few photos of the cave formations themselves, which is wonderful since the cave itself is a work of art.

The Table of Contents:
1. How to Study the Cave?
2. The Cave in its Setting
3. The Floors and Incursions into the Cave by Animals and People
4. Drawing in the Cave (covers 13 chambers in the cave)
5. The Techniques of Parietal Art
6. Lots of Animals and Signs (Horses etc)
7. Other Points of View
8. Conclusion

By the way, there is also a website for the Chauvet Cave where you can read reports by researchers etc.

This treasure will become a permanent fixture on my coffee table. My deepest thanks to the editor, Jean Clottes, and Thames and Hudson for doing such a masterful job.

5 out of 5 stars Intelligent extraordinary and revealing........2005-01-03

Extremely well written account of the ongoing excavation of Chauvet Cave. The detail in the authors descriptions of the many artifacts found and the maticulous fragility used in processing, dating, and cataloging. This book goes way beyond cave art. From the animals and humans that had contact with the cave to the environment, geology, and paleo-botony. These are some of the oldest art ever dated and while reading their accounts the reader is transported back into time witnessing specific events that occured more than 32,000 years ago during the IceAge.
I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Ties that Bind.......2007-06-17

Wow! I read this book in one sitting. I think both stories are real hot reads. I likes Lora Leigh's story the best. I've read alot of her books and she didn't dissapoint. It was well worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars "Ties That Bind" will turn up the heat to scorching!.......2005-08-08

It kicks off with "Sins of the Father", one of my first stories by the legendary Queen of Steam, Jaid Black. Candy Morgan's family company was in trouble. Her father no longer alive to run things, Candy has been in charge, unaware that her father's former protege has been waiting in the wings, ready to take over at the first sign of weakness. James Douglas Mahoney III is ready to take out his revenge, and taking over Morgan Chemicals is just a small part of his plan. His real goal is to take over Candy, the prize that had been dangled before him years ago. This time he's not wearing rose-colored glasses - he knows exactly what he wants and he plans to get it. Unaware of Candy's innocence to his firing, or of her longtime crush on him, JD has specific ideas of Candy's new role in the company, and they involve fulfilling every fantasy he's ever had about her. Very exciting and erotic, "Sins" touches on some forbidden fantasies many women may have about being kidnapped or submission. I think the story focuses more on a woman's pleasure and not about humiliation as JD always is gentle and caring in his treatment of Candy. Definitely a must-read for fans of Jaid Black.

"Surrender" by Lora Leigh kicks off her Bound Hearts series, and was my first by her. Cole has always made Tess nervous, but she can't deny how much she wants him. But rumors of his lifestyle have kept her away from him. Now her father wants her home, so she comes back for a visit, aware that Cole will be there, but is convinced she can resist temptation. But Cole is not taking "no" for an answer this time. He wants her badly, and will have her no matter what it takes. Cole believes there is a certain special bond that exists between him and Tess, one that includes bringing another man into their bedroom to bring her the ultimate fulfillment. Not just any man - his best friend Jesse. Cole loves Tess and only wants to make her happy, to give her more pleasure than she ever dreamed. But Tess feels her desires are wrong, dirty. With Cole's love, she learns that as long as they share in this pleasure together, her fantasies are something special between them, and not anything she should be ashamed of. Instead she finds her soul mate, the man who makes her feel alive and happy.

Both stories have very strong sexual fantasies which are not for everyone. But for those who enjoy these types of fantasies, "Ties That Bind" will not disappoint. It's a book I highly recommend.

4 out of 5 stars Could have been 5 stars.......2004-10-31

Okay, these two stories were absolutely erotic and the sex scenes sizzling, BUT....bondage stories can be written without the humiliation aspect. Tittilation without humilating the women would be preferable. I kept thinking that if a guy tried pulling that attitude on me, he would have gotten a knee in the groin, no matter how good the sex was afterward.

4 out of 5 stars Erotic short stories... .......2004-08-25

Jaid Black's Sins of the Father - Candy & James begin by making a bargain. She marries him (many stipulations in the marriage contract - including absolute obedience) and he doesn't destroy her family's finaces in a business take over. This didn't exactly come out of nowhere. He used to work for her father - deceased - until her father had fired him years ago - for no apparent reason. She agrees mostly because she's wanted him since she was a kid and she figures she'll get out of it eventually - An erotic tale that lets the characters develop.

Lora Leigh's Surrender is the story of Tess and Cole. Tess has been avoiding Cole for awhile after he made a hard pass at one of her father's parties. She was interested but put him off. She is somewhat repressed - living with her very controlling and unhappy mother. She goes to visit her father and ends up spending the week with Cole who is more then willing to fulfill her every desire (including a threesome - which seems to be LLeigh's thing).

Both stories were good. JBlack has a better understanding of how to write short stories but LLiegh's story was also good - though her characters didn't develop as much.
The book all together with both stories is still pretty short and in both stories I wished there was more to them - but enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Very Entertaining.......2004-05-01

I enjoyed reading both stories, the authors are two of my favorites. You will love this book if you are into some bondage and two guys and one girl thing. If not, than this book is not for you. Although both stories are about sex the characters seem to be able to form a relationship, which somehow turns in to love. Both authors make their characters work for what they want, so that when you are getting toward the end of each story you don't want it to end.

5 out of 5 stars fast read..........2007-06-10

Bernstein's insightful analysis and research was extremely interesting. The book was mentioned to me by one of my law professor's as a good read for my summer away from school material.
He was right, Bone Box is awesome.

4 out of 5 stars Very intriguing.......2007-06-10

This book was very interesting. I have always been fascinated by biblical history and this book got to the crux of it.

5 out of 5 stars A Fascinating, Educational and Sensational Read.......2007-06-10

I read the Bone Box shortly after reading (and seeing the movie) The Da Vinci Code. I was in the mood for a good, full of history, suspense story. I got more. Like the Da Vinci Code, I learned a lot about the period and the events of the time. But beyond that, The bone Box is a based on true events. A story that surely will continue to unfold as more people become aware of the significant finding detailed in the book. A must read.

5 out of 5 stars Breaking New Ground.......2007-04-14

To the best of my knowledge, "The Bone Box" is the first book fully dedicated to exploring the magnitude of the TaIpiot family tomb. Since the author isn't a privileged celebrity, and apparently used modest means for publicity, most people haven't heard about the Jesus family tomb until the airing of a Discovery channel documentary in March 2007, almost a year after "The Bone Box" was published.

One does wonder how such an amazing archeological discovery could possibly be obscured for 26 years. Maybe the reason can be found in the instinctive, frantic trashing of this find by many conformists around the globe, with sometimes misplaced zeal.

This book examins some evidence regarding the Talpiot find that wasn't discussed at all in the Discovery channel documentary, having to do mostly with Judaic and early Christian symbolism. But it's actually inconclusive, since the main character is somewhat skeptic and at the end just decides to drop the whole matter. So the author lets the reader decide whether or not the resting place of Jesus has been found. In any event, it's a great read!

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular thriller.......2007-04-14

A thriller is meant to be read in one breath. It is supposed to capture your undivided attention and to occupy your thoughts until you finish reading it - and long after. This is what Mr Berenstein's "The Bone Box" did to me.The first thing that attracted me to the book was the fresh and unique use of the language. The author use of words is refreshing and unexpected,he has the ability to find the accurate yet the most picturesque way of expressing himself. His writing is very precise - on one hand yet very flowing on the other hand.He does not waste words-he prefers to be concise - which serves the genre of a detective story perfectly.
The majority of thriller readers are not considered specialists in either Christianity or Archeology.so this book opens a window of opportunities to the average reader to widen his/her horizons culturallywise. It is clear that Mr Bernstein's research has been very thorough and profound.
Being an Israeli I found it most exciting to wander in familiar scenes.I am sure this book does a lot of justice to the beauty of Jerusalem as well as to the vividness of Tel Aviv.Yet the most heartbreaking aspect for me,as an Israeli, was the unique and rather extraordinary collision between Guy - the dead son who committed a suicide and the Arab terrorist who chose to commit his own suicide in the centre of Tel Aviv, therby killing and injuring dozens of innocent civilians.
This unbelievable comparison brings the personal versus the political reality to an overemotional extreme.

5 out of 5 stars Does anyone else agree . . . . ?.......2006-07-12

When I read ROCK JAW and DRAGONSLAYER, I thought nothing could compare.
I was wrong.
This book seems to be the most severely underrated of the whole series. I found it thrilling and heart-wrenching (the whole part about Thorn hating and not trusting Gran'ma Ben)even though the comedy was not truly up to Jeff Smith's usual. I also found myself satisfied at the amount of information (the identity of the hooded one, what makes the baddies think that Phoney will get them, and why Phoney was so stingy and moneystruck.) I loved this book and I can't see why others didn't.

5 out of 5 stars Old Man's Cave..........2006-02-20

OK, I'll get it out of my system now so I can focus on my review and summary. Here I go.... I LOVE BONE!! IT ROCKS!!! I'VE OBSESSIVELY (hmmm...maybe 'obsessively' is too strong.) SEARCHED FOR IT IN LOCAL LIBRARIES!!! whew. OK. I'm done. This is my favorite Bone so far. A lot of mysteries are cleared up, such as, who the hooded one is, why the Lord of the Locust is after Phoney, and what the Lord of the Locust was supposed to be. There is also some interesting Bone family history and valley history. Even though these big myseries are cleared up, there are some small ones still to be seen to, like, will Smiley and Bartleby ever be reunited? (You'll know what I mean if you've read Dragonslayer (Bone 4) and Rock Jaw (Bone 5))This series is my all time favorite one, along with the Clone Wars graphic novels, and Artemis Fowl. (I'm sure I've stated this several times now, but one more time can't hurt.)Start from the beginning and you have a better cance of 'getting' everything.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent text for open economy macroeconomics.......2005-03-29

We used this book in a one semester graduate class for International Economics. We used the book mostly for open economy macro as opposed to trade theory i.e. Chapter 16 & on. Like our professor told us, the book builds on concepts in a gradual fashion starting from the Marshall-Lerner condition right up to the Dornbusch Overshooting Model covering along the way, the basic Keynesian framework, Mundell-Fleming framework and, the policy assignment problem. The concepts helped us trace the causes for UK's renouncement of the Exchange Rate Mechanism in 1992 (and also how George Soros made his billions!). Using the book in this integrated fashion (Theory + Case Study) makes it a valuable addition to one's library.

1 out of 5 stars The Big Picture Missed.......2003-10-07

Currently I am a student of Professor Jones, one of the text's authors. The text is as drawling and insufficient as Jones' lectures. My first complaint is that there is a crisis of definition. Having only taken one economics course prior, I find that the text tends to move too quickly through topics of international economics, failing to provide illustrative examples so one can better understand how theory is put into practice. Second, the conceptual framework, as in all classical economic theory, is rooted in a place far from reality, a point Jones fails to make clear. The world is not perfectly competitive and does not contain countries equipped with fully developed capitalist institutions (like banking and credit), necessary to make internal economic adjustments in the face of free trade prices. I find the utility of the course to be very low, especially when free-trade is non-existent in the world. Discussions on the state of the contemporary world are sorely needed, if at least to serve as as comparison to the theoretical one constructed by this text. My last complaint is Jones' characterization of "anti-globalizers," those who he claimed "rioted" and were "violent" on the streets of Seatle in 1999 during the meeting of the WTO. The irony is that many of those protesters were advocating for FREER trade, pointing out that US farm subsidies cripple the economies of some underdeveloped nations who primarily produce agricultural commodities. The text's mypopic view of economics will not help those interested in learning how the world economy actually operates.

5 out of 5 stars Very clear instruction on international trade and finance.......2003-02-17

I found this book to be a very good learning tool, as the course reader for an introductory international economics course. I find that most textbooks are good as reference, not as learning tools, but this book is an exception. In a very concise manner, it builds theory upon theory of international trade, until the student has developed a strong set of analysis tools. The portion on international finance is good intro as well, even though it does not compare with more specialized texts. This text is sufficient to prepare the reader for any advanced trade issues, with the exception of more mathematically based arguments (which the book does not develop, given its focus on beginners).

5 out of 5 stars Thought provoking, intelligent textbook.......2001-01-15

This textbook for International Economics is a rarity. It's intelligent, exceptionally well written by the experts in the field. It does include a thorough review of the state-of-the-art theory of international trade and finance. To facilitate learning and yet challenge the reader, the authors equipped each chapter with really tough exercises. Only having solved them one might have an impression that he grasped the metarial really well. Good exercises are an indispensable companion of a student. Here we have one of the best I have ever seen. And I have seen a lot. Superior to other textbooks and highly recommended.

2 out of 5 stars Bleh.......2007-10-08

The prologue was fabulous.

After Dash chases down Elizabeth and Cassie, it became sex laden almost every other page, which is why I hate romance books with kids already.
Dash was written as someone who loved Cassie, and who made him live again, yet, once he saw Elizabeth, all he could think about was getting into Elizabeth's pants, and once he got her pregnant, it was like Cassie took a back burner.

I think it was too convenient about Cassie having to be taken to Sanctuary. It just gave an excuse for Dash and Liz to get it on without a kid hindering them. Why bother writing about a woman with a kid, then?

Elizabeth's almost mortally wounded, and Cassie comes in to see her, and then Dash rushes her out. WTF.

I love the feline breeds, and I thought this would be a great Breed book, but I just can't say I liked it.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Perfect.......2007-08-10

This is the best Breed book she's written and I've read and liked all of them. The book is dark & suspenseful but totally romantic at the same time. I loved Dash's character: He manages to be totally Alpha while at the same time unapologetically wearing his heart on his sleeve for his mate & her little girl.

You will also love Elizabeth; I found her character very believable. I liked the fact that she didn't just falling unquestionably for this stranger, hunk though he was, at first sight. Instead she made him work for her trust.

For those of you who have read the other Breed stories, you will really enjoy visiting Callan & the gang and their interaction w/ Dash & his new family. She is so good at weaving the past characters into the present.

Don't miss this one, especially if you have started w/her new Breed series; this will give you a bite of the history of how it all began.

5 out of 5 stars 21st Century Woman.......2007-07-07

Loved the book! I am now officially hooked on the Breed series! This story is for those who are dreaming for real ALPHA men in a world where our men have become so femininized that now dressing and acting like women is in vogue!

You want a hero? Here is Dash, from the Wolf Breed series.
This is a wonderful fantasy where you have a real ALPHA man selecting the woman and child he wants from reading letters while recuperating from his near death in a military mission gone bad. Dash heals and decides to find Elizabeth and her daughter to save them from their 2 year run from the men from hell. During the last minute when the Elizabeth and her child is near exhausted and almost caught, Dash arrives to save the day! The sex scenes involves anal and spanking. The love scenes involves alot of compassion and tenderness.

This is one book which I have read over and over and over!
Truly one of my favorite in from the Breed series after Tempting the Beast, Callan's story.

5 out of 5 stars Erotic romance writers ought to take a lesson from Lora Leigh.......2007-05-16

He was one of the Breeds. A group of genetically altered humans, engineered to be killing machines. But unlike the others, Dash Sinclair was the runt of the litter and marked to be put down. Fearing for his life, he escaped the breeding laboratory when he was but a child. From then on, he created a name, he created a past. When he was eighteen, he joined the army where he has found a substitute family. Then tragedy struck and the soldiers in his unit were killed. He was the sole survivor, barely alive when found. For weeks, he lied in a coma. Then a letter came from a lonely child and touched a soul he wasn't sure existed. As the letters poured in, they served to strengthen his resolve to live and became a lifeline during his months of recuperation. For inexplicable reason, he knew they needed him, needed his protection. Those innocent letters called out to the protector in him to find the mother and child that his heart claims as his own. And God help anyone who dares to harm what belongs to him...

For two years, Elizabeth and her daughter has been on the run. Like a protective she-wolf, she has managed to save her daughter from falling into the clutches of a sick man. But Elizabeth knows that their luck will soon run out. While Cassie, with all her innocence and childish hope, reassures her that their savior will soon come to their rescue, Elizabeth's fear for her daughter's life grow stronger. Then lo and behold, Cassie's friend walks into their lives and vows to keep them safe. Dash became an oasis of calm and awakens the woman in her. But Elizabeth knows that the calm and quiet is only short lived and soon they would be thrown back in the midst of danger. But for the first time since they have been on the run from the maniac intent on having her daughter, she would like to be a woman, one who is desired, one who is cared for. With danger lurking in every corner, Elizabeth knows that every minute is precious. Not only is she merely fighting to keep her daughter safe, but for a future with Dash.

Wow! What a story from the word go! It has been a while since I was moved just after reading a few pages. ELIZABETH'S WOLF is quite an emotional story and goes beyond your average erotica novel. This is more complex than the other Breed novels and manages to really suck you in. Lora Leigh has done very well in developing the main characters and you will be glued to the pages as you wait for the story to unfold. Elizabeth's maternal instincts will strike a cord in any woman and Cassie's innocence will melt your heart. And you would want someone like Dash to come to your rescue! This is a truly wonderful read. I loved the characters and story so much and wish that the book were longer. Well done to Lora Leigh for writing such a compelling and memorable story that stays with you long after you finish reading it.

3 out of 5 stars Meh...........2007-04-09

This book dissapointed me. I guess the summary just sounded so sweet and intriguing, with the soldier slowing falling in love with this family through his letters from the little girl, and I was so dispointed when all of that took place within the prologue. Also, I knew there was going to be sex, but it was just so cliched and ridiculous that I coudln't stand it...and it was just so soon! I just couldn't buy into it. The story wasn't all bad, I just couldn't really be drawn into it.

When her parents are killed by an earthquake, 5-year-old Ayla wanders through the forest completely alone. Cold, hungry, and badly injured by a cave lion, the little girl is as good as gone until she is discovered by a group who call themselves the Clan of the Cave Bear. This clan, left homeless by the same disaster, have little interest in the helpless girl who comes from the tribe they refer to as the "Others." Only their medicine woman sees in Ayla a fellow human, worthy of care. She painstakingly nurses her back to health--a decision that will forever alter the physical and emotional structure of the clan. Although this story takes place roughly 35,000 years ago, its cast of characters could easily slide into any modern tale. The members of the Neanderthal clan, ruled by traditions and taboos, find themselves challenged by this outsider, who represents the physically modern Cro-Magnons. And as Ayla begins to grow and mature, her natural tendencies emerge, putting her in the middle of a brutal and dangerous power struggle.

Although Jean Auel obviously takes certain liberties with the actions and motivations of all our ancestors, her extensive research into the Ice Age does shine through--especially in the detailed knowledge of plants and natural remedies used by the medicine woman and passed down to Ayla. Mostly, though, this first in the series of four is a wonderful story of survival. Ayla's personal evolution is a compelling and relevant tale. --Sara Nickerson

Book Description

A remarkable epic of one woman's odyssey--filled with mystery and magic.

Here is the saga of a people who call themselves the Clan of the Cave Bear; how they lived; the animals they hunted; the great totems they revered. But mostly it is the story of Ayla, the girl they found and raised, who was not like them. To the Clan, her fair looks make her different--ugly. And she has odd ways: she laughs, she cries, she has the ability to speak. But even more, she struggles to be true to herself and, with her advanced intelligence, is curious about the world around her.

Although Ayla is clearly a member of the Others, she is nurtured by her adoptive parents, befriended by members of the Clan, and gradually accepted into the family circle. But there are those who would cast her out for her strange, threatening ways.

So the conflict between the ancient Clan, bound by heredity to its traditions, and the girl in its midst, of a newer breed destined to alter the face of earth, could never be resolved. And it is this same struggle that leads Ayla to venture where no Clan woman has ever dared. Driven by destiny and a will to survive, Ayla breaks the forbidden taboo...

1 out of 5 stars This book is AWEFUL.......2007-09-17

I read this book 3-4 years ago. It's still makes me highly agitated every time I think about it. You just feel bad for the main character through most of the book and there is no redemption at the end. It has the worst ending ever! It still pisses me off that I spent the time reading it. There isn't really much of a story, just a lot of details and weird issues. ASIDE: DO NOT READ IF YOU ARE SENSITIVE TO RAPE! That should be on the back cover.

To sum up: DO NOT READ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03

A woman who is smarter than your average neanderthal or even other clan member helps out.

A garden variety prehistoric romance if there is such, just rather long. Smart girl looks for smart bloke, tries to overcome the nogoodniks, and keep everything going along and not collapsing. Has a few bright ideas for stuff along the way.

4 out of 5 stars Ayla is a jewel.......2007-08-09

The Clan of the Cave Bear is in my opinion a very creative story. The story brings out the characters living in the Upper Paleolithic era. The amount of research Jean Auel had done to create this novel is very apparent. The heroine, Ayla is a jewel and I could help but root for her as she struggles to make her place in this male dominated society. A wonderful book and I highly recommend it to every reader

4 out of 5 stars How did early humans go about everyday actions?.......2007-07-02

I have found that many of the books that I am drawn to are books that my mother once enjoyed. I believe that this is me trying to hold onto a slice of what my mother was like. At the same time I know that she could suggest a pretty good book. She had often raved about "Clan of the Cave Bear" while she was reading it. So, I had heard some of this story before we decided to read it for the book club, but that did not take away from the experience. This book is a wonderful read with characters and scenes that you won't find any other book. There are slow parts in the long story, but they do not take away from a story of diversity and early human life.

5 out of 5 stars A VERY GOOD WORK........2007-04-25

This is a survey of prehistoric art from around the world. This majority of the work concerns cave art and cliff art. The photos are of very good to perfect quality...actually some of the best I have seen in books dealing with this subject. The text is quite good and quite informative. The art work represented here goes back some 30,000 years and whild certainly not all inclusive, does give a very adequate representation of what is out there. This is an excellent work to add to your collection if you have not already done so.
