Blink is about the first two seconds of looking--the decisive glance that knows in an instant. Gladwell, the best-selling author of The Tipping Point, campaigns for snap judgments and mind reading with a gift for translating research into splendid storytelling. Building his case with scenes from a marriage, heart attack triage, speed dating, choking on the golf course, selling cars, and military maneuvers, he persuades readers to think small and focus on the meaning of "thin slices" of behavior. The key is to rely on our "adaptive unconscious"--a 24/7 mental valet--that provides us with instant and sophisticated information to warn of danger, read a stranger, or react to a new idea.

Gladwell includes caveats about leaping to conclusions: marketers can manipulate our first impressions, high arousal moments make us "mind blind," focusing on the wrong cue leaves us vulnerable to "the Warren Harding Effect" (i.e., voting for a handsome but hapless president). In a provocative chapter that exposes the "dark side of blink," he illuminates the failure of rapid cognition in the tragic stakeout and murder of Amadou Diallo in the Bronx. He underlines studies about autism, facial reading and cardio uptick to urge training that enhances high-stakes decision-making. In this brilliant, cage-rattling book, one can only wish for a thicker slice of Gladwell's ideas about what Blink Camp might look like. --Barbara Mackoff

5 out of 5 stars Powerful.......2007-10-11

Amazing and insightful information written in a very engaging style. This book can help you be more objective, evaluate opinions of others, avoid prejudice, even help relationships including marriage. Very astute insights to help decision making. I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Great Reporting on a Fascinating Topic .......2007-10-10

Gladwell takes a fascinating topic -- how the mind works without us knowing it -- and does some of his best reporting work. He covers a broad spectrum of research and events that are fascinating, especially when connected under the broader topic. I've read it twice and referred to it several other times. I was hoping for something at the end to give me clarity on what to do with the information now that I have it, but it wasn't there. That may have been intentional on the author's part; he might want us to draw our own conclusions. But that was an expectation I developed as I was reading that wasn't fulfilled in the end. That does not in any way take away from the quality of the writing and the expansiveness of the information. "Blink" quickly made my list of favorite reads.

4 out of 5 stars An entertaining and thought provoking read.......2007-10-09

An engaging and easily read essay on the way we think, and how "shooting from the hip" isn't always such a bad thing...when it's backed up by experience. Gladwell's research into an area completely removed from his own arena of expertise is detailed and thorough. He approaches the subject with enough humility and honest curiosity that the reader feels he is more along for the ride than being lectured from the podium as are most tomes on psychology and sociology. Especially noteworthy are his many references to specific studies and the occasional invitation to participate in a few prove to be...illuminating to say the least (I swore I wasn't bigoted, until...).

5 out of 5 stars a must read.......2007-10-09

I've been recommended to read this book by my mentor, and I have to say he was right (as very often he is). This is definetely the kind of book that make you say: hey, I didn't know, but know that I'm thinking about, that's true!

Interesting episodes that you have always lived, and know you can understand why

2 out of 5 stars Not in a blink.......2007-10-02

I was about to buy the book, since the subject and the assumed hypothesis look appealing and interesting. Then my Amazon friend Conan wrote a rather lukewarm review and I delayed the purchase. Then I found the book on my daughter's shelf. Thanks to Conan for saving my money.
I borrowed the book and read it. In a blink I thought it was as interesting as it had promised. It took me more than a blink to find out, that it does not deliver: you learn some interesting anecdotes about marriage predictions and about malpractice suits (my other Amazon friend Joe Neuschatz will be interested) and such things, but you never really get nearer to understanding what the alleged special rapid intelligence process really is.
The book reminds me a bit of the style of articles in Der Spiegel: journalism well short of science. Sometimes entertaining, but mostly disappointing.

Book Description

Hailed as “a writer of uncommon clarity” by the New Yorker, National Book Award finalist Allegra Goodman has dazzled readers with her acclaimed works of fiction, including such beloved bestsellers as The Family Markowitz and Kaaterskill Falls. Now she returns with a bracing new novel, at once an intricate mystery and a rich human drama set in the high-stakes atmosphere of a prestigious research institute in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Sandy Glass, a charismatic publicity-seeking oncologist, and Marion Mendelssohn, a pure, exacting scientist, are codirectors of a lab at the Philpott Institute dedicated to cancer research and desperately in need of a grant. Both mentors and supervisors of their young postdoctoral protégés, Glass and Mendelssohn demand dedication and obedience in a competitive environment where funding is scarce and results elusive. So when the experiments of Cliff Bannaker, a young postdoc in a rut, begin to work, the entire lab becomes giddy with newfound expectations. But Cliff’s rigorous colleague–and girlfriend–Robin Decker suspects the unthinkable: that his findings are fraudulent. As Robin makes her private doubts public and Cliff maintains his innocence, a life-changing controversy engulfs the lab and everyone in it.

With extraordinary insight, Allegra Goodman brilliantly explores the intricate mixture of workplace intrigue, scientific ardor, and the moral consequences of a rush to judgment. She has written an unforgettable novel.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars A little light on the fiction.......2007-10-08

I agree with the many other reviewers that Allegra Goodman's book distills down the ambition, pettiness, and ego of scientists to their barest human essentials. She breathes a considerable life and complexity into her characters and she interweaves their very different viewpoints and perspectives into a single narrative with a deft touch that makes spellbinding what could easily have been muddled.

Why then do I only give this book one star? Because a substantially identical story has been told better (and earlier!) by the writer Daniel J. Kevles in his book "The Baltimore Case: A Trial of Politics, Science, and Character". Kevles is no novelist, though, he's an investigator. His story is true -- it actually happened. The Baltimore Case is the true story of allegations of research fraud that unfolded in Cambridge in the late 1980s. Ms. Goodman had the deck stacked in her favor when she set out to write this book: the characters and narrative were already in place!

Like Goodman's novel, the real, non-fictional Baltimore case involves
i) a widely known scientific figure (David Baltimore in real life; Sandy Glass in the novel); who collaborates with

ii) a lesser known ambitious junior colleague (Thereza Imanishi-Kari, junior to David Baltimore in years and in stature in real life; Marion Mendelsson, junior to Sandy in stature in the novel).

This research team
iii) works in the town of Cambridge, Massachusetts at a famous research institution in the 1980s (MIT's Center for Cancer Research in real life, a fictionlized "Philpott Institute" in the novel)

iv) and supervise a biomedical research project whose results are a called into question by female post-doctoral researcher in her mid-thirties (Margot O'Toole in real life; Robin in the novel) and

v) eventually becomes involved with a couple of hacks at the NIH (the Office of Scientific Integrity's Walter W. Stewart and Ned Feder in real life; the "Office for Research Integrity in Science"'s Alan Hackett and Jonathan Schneiderman in the novel) whose office is supposedly charged with investigating and quelling scientific fraud but

vi) really seems to focus on railroading people whether guilty or not, so that an aged, grandstanding congressman (John Dingell in real life; Paul Redfield in the novel) can generate some good PR.

Like the novel, a turning point in the Baltimore case is
vii) a forceful counterattack by the lead male researcher [Baltimore / Glass] to being badgered by the congressman [Dingell / Redfield] in a public hearing; after the turning point,

viii) there are a few ups and downs as OSI / ORIS office leaks documents to the press, but ultimately,

ix) a specially convened appeals panel exonerates all the researchers accused of fraud.

To believe that these nine examples of overlap between the novel and real life events are merely coincidental strains credulity. Nevertheless, the front matter to the novel contains the standard disclaimer that all resemblance to real people is "entirely coincidental".

From my perspective, the continuance of Ms. Goodman and her publisher to purport that the work is fictional is highly misleading to readers, at best. Although I detailed nine instance of suspicious overlap between the novel and real-life events, the similarity of Robin to Margot O'Toole, in personality as well as function in the plot (as described by Kevles in his book) is especially undeniable.

This book is like an inverse of "A Million Little Pieces" by James Frey. Frey claimed he was writing about real events when actually he made them up. Oprah got mad. Well, her, Goodman claims to have made up this story when in fact has actually occurred. If only Oprah would step in here!

But even notwithstanding the fact that the "novel" actually isn't quite so, Daniel Kevles's book is more compelling, more detailed, and better written than Allegra Goodman's.

Don't want to read Kevles's book? That's ok, a cursory search of amazon revealed several other openly non-fictional books about the Baltimore case. Aside from this novel, which is purportedly not based on real-world people or events, Kevles' book is the only I have personally have read, and I enjoyed his book considerably.

5 out of 5 stars A Stunning Achievement... Brilliant.......2007-10-07

Allegra Goodman's "Intuition" is a stunning achievement, a novel that simultaneously explores the joy and darkness of scientfic inquiry, office friendships, and intimate relationships. Intuition centers on a series of possibly flawed cancer experiments at a Cambridge, Massachusetts research institute, the detection of the possible deception, and the actions and motivation of the data's champions and doubters. Goodman's characters, ranging from the directors of the laboratory, to postdoctoral investigators, government officials, competing scientists and the families of the novel's principal figures, are sharply drawn and affecting.

The strength of Goodman's novel is that this story of the potential manipulation of research data and the perils fraught with whistle-blowing and defending the results of one's work could take place in any profession. Goodman accurately and delicately captures the tensions between idealists and pragmatists, the developers of products and research and those who market these results, and the personal and political complexities often intertwined in uncovering the truth. Goodman's work is all the stronger in that she captures each of her characters with sympathy, and because she avoids taking sides in this tale of moral and scientfic judgment.

Most fascinating about "Intuition" is that there are no outright heroes and villains-- all of Goodman's characters embody strengths and flaws. At the end, it is Goodman's depiction of human fallibility existing side-by-side with courage and intellect that makes this novel so special. Even the book's supposed protagonist, the whistleblower whose intuition uncovers the possibly flawed experimental protocols, is revealed as motivated by personal bitterness as well as integrity. And the researcher who is accused of fabricating results is similarly a mix of idealism, enthusiasm and keen ambition.

Similarly, the practices used to ascertain possible scientific fraud, ranging from internal laboratory oversight, to a peer investigation, a National Institutes of Health examination, and a Congressional inquiry are revealed as fallible and useful as the people who conduct them. Again, Goodman suggests that human conduct is patterned in shades of gray, rather than in black or white, while concluding, upliftingly, that most of us try our best even when we fail.

This subtle, powerful and complex human drama is an excellent and worthy addition to your reading list. "Intuition" will not disappoint.

4 out of 5 stars a scientist's point of view.......2007-10-04

The great philosopher Karl Popper once likened the scientist's condition to that of a blind man who enters a black room in search of a black hat that might not even be there. Although the target of many controversial comments this grim image closely describes the unpredictable enterprise of individuals who venture into science. Ms. Goodman's book has the merit to detail this "truth" into the lives, passions, and all that human kind comes with of a research group striving for success and survival. The so called ivory tower has rightly been opened up in these years of justified public demand for results and for accountability of those spending taxpayers' money. But the ball remains in the scientists' hands, and with that all the burden and limited success rate that come with it. This novel is simple yet very introspective, and the Author has been quite good at detailing the life of a scientist, from its inception to glory via the infamous years of severe post-doctoral training. This is a meritorious effort that describes the scientist's pain in the times we live. It will be up to the lay people to grab its implications or not.

5 out of 5 stars Intuition.......2007-09-24

Allegra Goodman's "Intuition" is a brilliant book with one of the funniest and most rueful accounts of a person accepting his identity.
I have given 5 copies as gifts, and each reader has thanked me.

3 out of 5 stars Readable, but not great -- 2-3 stars.......2007-08-25

I'm not sure why so many people rave about this book. It was well enough written, and the story somewhat interesting, though not enough for an entire novel. The characters were poorly drawn, almost as an afterthought to the plot. There are lots of bad guys, almost all bad guys, in fact, but not a whole lot worth reading, mainly dull daily work drama -- better as a nonfiction New Yorker article, I would think.

5 out of 5 stars couldn't set this one down..........2006-06-28

This is a book that gets to the point. It's the "how to" book we're looking for. I started reading it Friday evening - and finished it on Sunday. Worth every penny. Thanks Henry.

5 out of 5 stars An eye opener.......2005-02-23

I bought this book a week ago at a local bookstore.
I read it in two days. It is a real delight! In 236 pages, Reed covers the most of ESP, giving credit to hypnosis as a natural channel to connect with our unconscious.
The book is an eye opener (third eye?) on the infinite possibilities that every human being has to connect with his inner mind. It is right there, hidden inside and so easy to reach. With some dicipline and your own audio tape, the teachings of this book can really have an increadible impact on your life.
Buy it, read it and apply it (get a pendulum too!) this is my best recommendation

5 out of 5 stars For the Serious Student.......2004-02-24

I've now read my share of psychic "How to" books, but this one takes the cake. This book tells teaches more than how to be psychic, but also where it all comes from, psychology and philosophy, it also combinds scientific facts and experiments to prove psychic existance, thus, giving you a broader aspect of the psychic phenomenon. For those who have finished your beginner books, and want something more in depth and fullfilling, this is the book. After reading this book, I had to order more Edgar Cayce books! Happy reading!

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING.......2003-06-11

Ok amazing is kinda a strong word, but as far as understanding goes, this book is awesome. I mean it has everything that you would think to ask and I have read alot of books, but I HIGHLY recommend this one to be your first and I am a pretty tough critic.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

It's hard to imagine a more elegant or spiritually sound book on developing intuition than Divine Intuition. Using full-color graphics, heavy-stock paper, and sophisticated type, Lynn Robinson has created a fitting tribute to the divine connection between inner guidance and the voice of God. "Every person has a unique sense of the meaning of the word 'God,'" writes Robinson (The Complete Idiot's Guide to Being Psychic). "To me, the concept of God means an invisible intelligence that animates our world and provides wisdom and love to guide our lives." Regardless of how you imagine or know God, intuition is its voice, she explains.

Although the book works best as a primer, it can also be enjoyed a refresher course. Robinson gently walks readers through intuitive training. "Just for today," she begins, pay attention to your daydreams--the images that come to you, the longings that you imagine can "inform you about your life purpose." In the next chapter, she helps readers explore the act of intuitive decision making: when faced with two options, she show readers how to listen for the answer that gives a sense of peace and calm. "Your body provides a wealth of guidance and feedback to you," says Robinson. Each chapter offers a manageable means to hone the art of intuitive listening--the ability to hear and interpret "the still, small voice of God."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Worth Your Time.......2007-06-04

The author addresses such questions as: "What is God?" She then leads the reader into an introspective process to uncover what God means to them personally. Chapters are devoted to intuition, money, creating joy, gratitude, even one called "Choosing God Thoughts," and another questioning what you'd do if you knew you couldn't fail.

Robinson's premise is derived from her years of metaphysical study: what you focus on is what you get more of. Her book is an entertaining guide for aligning your focus. The exercises provide quick methods to go inside and discover what you feel about money, for instance, or how to access your intuitive guidance and hear the still small voice within. Her goal is to help the reader generate a life that's true to him or herself and to actively use inner resources that may have been previously untapped or misunderstood.

Robinson is also a working psychic, and co-author of The Complete Idiot's Guide To Being Psychic, another excellent book in which one gets a solid sense of her range of knowledge. In both books she brings good ideas together simply, and in Divine Intuition, lyrically, as well.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Intuitive Writers in North America.......2007-03-16

Divine Intuition is a smooth read into what intuition is, is not, its various manifestations, and other lessons from real life. Robinson writes with a clear voice and blends reason with spirit in her work. She does reference past-lives though so if this conflicts with your value system, don't allow yourself to be confused. For the most part this book is a great introduction to a natural ability given to everyone in various degrees. Alot of her work has been in business circles which allows people to measure the effectiveness and accuracy of her guidance.

5 out of 5 stars Changed my life when I needed it most..........2006-09-23

I picked up this book several years ago at a very unhappy time in my life. Things seemed to be happening out of my control and I was wandering through my days like a zombie, waiting for a time when happiness would find me again. Through the acceptance and realization of what Dr. Robinson had to say, I realized that my happiness was there and waiting for me..but I had to be the one to make it happen. I had to surround myself with the things that made me happy, with thoughts that encuoraged my happiness and growth, and push away from people, thoughts and habits that inhibited achieving that happiness.

For me the most profound statement or antecdote in this book was about a man who came to see the author at her practice. He said to her.. When will I find happiness. I thought when I graduated from college I would be happy. I thought when I got married i would be happy. I thought when I got the job I always wanted, I would be happy. She reponded in saying to the effect that... Happiness isnt a letter that arrives on your doorstop, its not written in a diploma that you achieve and a great being hands it to you, its not waiting out there one day for you to find it. Everyday you live without happinness is a day that you did not allow yourself to embrace and find joy in the everyday things in your life that you should be happy and thankful for. You need to make your joy in life..noone else can make it happen for you.

It was such a simple statement yet so...incredibly profound. DUH! I need to change my thinking, my focus, my world around me to see the positive, the small little things everyday that I should sing praises for. Being a parent and watching a child should be the pinnacle of this. There are thousands of moments to ebrace through them, for they are part of our lives. If I only focus on the negative..I will never ALLOW myself to have happiness.

On another note..I loved the visual display of this book! It allowed me to be able to keep goin with it. If it had been paragraph on paragraph of text..I wouldnt have been able to read it so thoroughly. So that is a persoal preference. Being an incredibly creative visual person, I loved it intensely. I loved the quotes of encuoragement spattered through the book.

The presentation of this book and its great material encouraged me to present the ideas and its effect on me to a Mom's group that I belonged to at the time. I wanted other people to share in the wisdom I had found. I know some are not ready to accept these messages until they are 'ready'. Do yourself a favor and try to be READY when the book is in your hands. Be open and ready to change your thoughts and your life. Only you can do it and choose to do it. I wish you luck!

On a side note.. with my Mom's group, we printed off many of the little sayings from the book and cut them onto little strips and put them in a jar. Whenever we needed a pick up or a thankful moment we could open the jar and pull one out, read it and think on it. I still have my jar..maybe I need to get it out again.

For the last 20 years I have focused my attention on what I call the divine flow in life, and how that flow is continually guiding us toward the effortless fulfillment of our heart's desires. Well, the most valuable and reliable source of guidance you have is your own intuition. This book explores intuition in depth, and will greatly increase your understanding of this key element for living life in the divine flow. Thank you, Lynn, for your divinely inspired words of wisdom!

2 out of 5 stars interesting, but I prefer other decks.......2006-10-25

so you have motherpeace and daughters of the moon for the ladies, I guess that this deck is sort of done for the gentlemen who drum in circles in the woods under the moon. the deck is very white and very male. there are pictures of people of other cultures, but they are there to be exotic and "other." the female energey here isn't a quiet, inner energy but rather one that exists to support the male.

many sacred sculptures and artworks from other cultures are incorporated into some of the cards, but in a way that doesn't seem to reveal a lot of knowledge about the artwork included. why a god of industry on a card traditionally about inner nurturing? I do not get the feeling that the levels of meaning here are as deep as those in say, crowley's thoth tarot, which I love love love. and yes, as someone else stated, the images here do feel dated. I just wish that they felt deeeeeper! (crystals and flowers chosen for the swords and cups don't seem to have any reason for being there other than that they are crystals and flowers...why not blooms of mourning for a card on letting go, or perenials for cards about resiliance, for example.) this deck left me wanting more for the people who made it.

one thing they did give was a very heavy new-age push to sign up for their card course and to send more money and blah blah blah.

the deck I got also had many of the cards stuck together because of the coating. I had to peel each one apart and they don't shuffle so well.

fun to look at, but I don't use it as much as thoth, enchanted or sacred rose.

5 out of 5 stars voyager tarot deck.......2006-08-26

I call myself a visionary because of this deck.
Never have I come across something that encompasses such a montage of images that peak out at all the appropriate times.
On a side note, I personally do not believe in "reading the book" or "reading the tarot formations"neither the inserts included.
I feel the card is allowing me to part the bushes and peer into whatever soul I am working with at the time.
They strike me as a form of 52 pickup with all the images hanging in the air.
My job is to pick each image one by one and unite them into an appropriate overview for the client.
This deck has changed me , altered my views of beauty and life as we know it.
It challenges the limitations of the 4 sides to a card and whisper their version of maddness into my awaiting ears and eyes.
I have had a blast with these cards, something I view as a special companion , my sidekick.
When you use them do not get overwhelmed by their size and contents, allow yourself a minute to adjust to the images that jump forward and weave a tale for you.
My only other piece of advise to a newbee, dont study the images , don't stare at the cards endlessly,,,,each read is a moment , allow them to dictate to you what song will be sung.
Ill say it again, these cards have been such a link to the beyond for me.
I am grateful we have found each other.
enjoy them .

5 out of 5 stars tarot for the multidimensional traveler.......2006-01-29

This a great tool for self reflection. The cards are beautiful and deeply thought out, combining imagery from many spiritual paths in a synthesis that feels natural and epansive. I've had a deck for more than ten years and it continues to surprise and inspire me. I highly recommend this deck and the guide that it comes with.

3 out of 5 stars Definitive New Age Tarot.......2005-07-30

This was one of the first Tarot decks I purchased in 1987. At the time it was cutting edge with my taste. Very contempory in its presentation. I was simultaneously studying the Crowley-Thoth deck that Mr. Wanless wrote a great workbook for. His Voyager Tarot brought the Tarot into the modern age for myself and many others. This was the deck I began using to read for others.

The card were large and beautifully constructed of universal photography that seemed so profound then. This was just as the digital age was being born. There were no fancy programs to work with. It was truely a major feat at the time. Compliments were given to the cards alone, not my skills reading them! Alas, this was my college years. I was an art student. I had very little money and took them to a party. They were stolen in 1989!

For myself,I Hermetically sealed the deck as well as my current study of the Tarot. I kept reading with the Thoth Deck. After college, many years later I purchased another Photo-montage deck-The Cosmic Tribe Tarot. It was superior indeed! I decided to purchase another copy of the Voyager in 1999.

Time can date our perception of what we consider beautiful or meaningful. That was the case with this particular Tarot. It had lost much of the mystical charm of just 10 years ago. The images are somewhat nostalgic and I do not use it for any professional work. Mr Wanless should try another deck with modern technology being what it is. There are many great photo decks out there. I feel this one is just a little dated in its style.

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular!.......2003-08-27

Beautiful, modern, artistic, creative interpretation of the tarot. The artwork is bright, vivid and magnificent. lots of symbolism incorporated into each card. I love the cultural diveristy reflected in these cards. The Family cards, with realistic representations of the Court Cards (ex. man or woman instead of king and queen) is such a wonderful idea. I really connect to these cards. Very highly recommend for anyone interested in Tarot from beginner to professional reader.

Spirituality, optimism, career planning, and self-help neatly blend together in this highly useful guidebook on living one's true purpose. Step by step, Adrienne shows readers how to discover one's calling (learning how to take advantage of synchronicity, intuition, and "uncommon sense") and organize life accordingly. This coauthor of The Celestine Prophecy does not promise a payoff of material wealth or worldly fame. Rather, she suggests that "writing your own job description" and "doing the dream" will result in a more spiritual and meaningful life. Her most impressive leadership comes in the section called "Deep Water," where she addresses the obstacles and suffering that frequently block the path to enlightenment. --Gail Hudson

Book Description

The co-author of The Celestine Prophecy Experiential Guide helps readers uncover the unsuspected, untapped power of synchronicity and intuition that will bring success, satisfaction, and serenity.

Everyone really has a purpose in life, says Carol Adrienne in her new guide to harnessing the power inside yourself. The question is: How do you learn to go with the flow and let your true nature guide you?

Chapter by chapter, The Purpose of Your Life explains how to locate the source of your innate energy and focus it, how to align yourself with the natural forces that swirl around us always, and how to develop the intuition that fosters synchronicity. The book is packed with illuminating anecdotes and profiles of fascinating people -- from artists to urban planners to Zen masters -- who describe how they found their own purposes. There are practical exercises throughout, along with charts, self-questionnaires, and other tools that help you understand yourself and your deepest aspirations.

As you learn to recognize and trust the voice of intuition, you'll find new doors opening and new possibilities everywhere. You'll feel invigorated by the potential you've unleashed, a power that will only grow with each new accomplishment. And you'll discover the serenity and satisfaction that come only to those who are living life to the fullest. The Force is with you -- all you have to do is reach out and start to use it.

5 out of 5 stars A great guide book for a seeker of Purpose.......2007-05-30

Carol Adrienne has written an excellent primer on the subject of Purpose. Whether you are a writer or speaker on the subject of Purpose, this book provides some important guidelines to simplifying an otherwise complex subject. The insights and the 'Talking to Yourself'sections at the end of each chapter are especially helpful.

5 out of 5 stars excellant career guidance.......2006-03-09

I found this a very helpful book filled with ideas for people to find their purpose. I am a career guidance councelor and ninety percent of my clients do not have a purpose for why they are doing what they are doing in their work. They come to me saying "somethings missing in my work or life". It's often because they do not have a purpose which this book can help them create. Purpose is something we create or decide on. Many people think it's something mystical and we discover it by accident. This book gives people specific tools to help identify a meaningful purpose.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Starting Point.......2004-02-16

The optimism in this book combined with its emphasis on the link between intuition and synchronicity was infectious. I wanted to learn more! A new book that I stumbled across has become my companion to this one. It is called LUCKY YOU!, by Randall Fitzgerald, and it takes this book's themes and subject matter and adds to it information about using dreamwork and meditation practices and even prayer to help create streaks of good luck in our lives. Both books are relentlessly inspiring and full of optimism and hope. I liked all of the stories and the author's own anecdotes about creating good fortune.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring true stories and practical spirituality!.......2003-10-07

The co-author of The Celestine Prophecy Experiential Guide has put together this excellent collection of suggestions, ideas and true life stories to inspire one to find one's higher purpose, and a jolly good job it does! It is interesting, well-written and entertaining throughout, with each chapter finishing with a few straightforward questions and exercises to move you on in the right direction. Part three, "deep water", deals masterfully with the darker and more difficult experiences one sometimes has while trying to connect more deeply with the soul's purpose.

A major theme is developing an awareness of synchronicity (meaningful co-incidence) experiences as guiding posts for deeper personal development. There are a large number of interviews with people from a wide range of backgrounds, all of whom have come to find their unique purpose through such ideas. Quotes from the famous such as the Dalai Lama and Frank Zappa (!), and not so famous are also highlighted throughout the text e.g."intuition is the creative, universal intention expressing through you" and "either I am lost, crazy and screwed up, or I am found and on a difficult part of the path".

I found the chapter on "the void" particularly supportive, especially the section on "holding your centre during confusion, chaos and fear". Carol Adrienne is not afraid to explore the sometimes harsh realities of the spiritual journey, but the book is essentially upbeat and positively inspirational.

Book Description

An estimated one in 20 Americans has a natural talent for perceptiveness. Could you be one of them? Usually they are unskilled empaths, which means they suffer from such problems as emotional instability, apparent co-dependence, low self-esteem, or hypochondria. Rose Rosetree's seventh book, Empowered by Empathy, explains how to improve the quality of life by turning off unwanted empathy.

Her how-to techniques also demonstrate how to turn empathy on. At will. Bigger than ever before. Interspersed with her teaching, Rosetree describes elusive spiritual travels that are sometimes humorous, sometimes moving, and consistently mind-boggling. The cover, for instance, demonstrates “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” an outrageously simple method to move an empath's conscious awareness into the physical body of a consenting partner. An example of one of Rosetree's wild but true anecdotes? Read how she inadvertently outed a spy--see page 134. Yes, you can learn to experience vividly, from the inside, what it is like to be another person. The author, a teacher of personal development since 1971, has tested these techniques. Use them and they will alter your reality (for the better).

Rosetree's pioneering discoveries will also revolutionize how you understand empathy. You'll learn why it happens and how it goes far beyond “Emotional Intelligence” or “sympathy.” True empathy, you'll discover, comes in many varieties, including physical, intellectual, spiritual, and emotional gifts. Although an increasing number of authors today discuss empathy, Rosetree is the one who will satisfy you if you're really an empath. The depth and scope of her work will bring you relief. Yes, relief is not too strong a word for the rare chance to meet a skilled empath who understands your gifts and can teach you how to make them work for you.

Could you be an empath? Three tests near the start of the book will help you find out. Then you'll learn Rosetree's 25 ways to Fly in Spirit. Plus a great deal more. Pay special attention to the chapter on “Grounding,” with its insights into smoking, weight-loss, and more—counter-culture but absolutely on target.

And, as always with any book by Rosetree, you're in for a treat just because the writing is so good. Between the covers of Empowered by Empathy you'll find powerful words, directed with caring intent, and sparkling with Rosetree's honesty, insight, surprises, and irrepressible humor. America's first book ever for empaths can empower you to be of greater service to others. With less suffering and more skill. Consider yourself invited.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most helpful books I have ever read.......2007-07-20

There are few books out there that both inspire and inform at the same time. With each sentence, I kept nodding my head in approval because it all applied to me. As I read the part on emotional onneness and emotional intuition, I could not help getting teary eyed because for the first time I had an explanation for what I had. I was not abnormal, or an emotional wreck. I had a gift all along and I did not even know it. Also the fact that it is written by one who has actually been there is a a sigh of relief because you are not alone. I recommend this book to anyone who believes that empathy might be a part of their every day life, and I hope it is as much a blessing to you as it was to me.

4 out of 5 stars Great book for understand your empathy.......2007-05-26

Some of things are long winded and not all that well explained, such as some of the exercises. I got the impression that you sort of had to understand things a bit more to really get use out of some of the exercises. Unfortunately, shutting it off and turning it back on isn't quite as simple as she'd have you believe. My empathy is very ingrained in me and I still have trouble doing it without the aid of my guides, and I'm far more advanced now. BUT... it is a wonderful book for beginning to understand more about a latent gift I didn't realize I had.

1 out of 5 stars Hogwash.......2007-04-10

I was so disappointed with this book. I expected something more concrete, complex and helpful. The author used to read faces at parties as a paid party entertainer, for godssake. I read it and tried all of the exercises, and to get anything out of it you have to be one of those New-Age-suspension-of-reason types. It is simplistic and unhelpful. Someone with a more serious background in psychology is better equipped to truly help people who have a problem with feeling too much empathy.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully helpful!.......2007-01-05

After being clued into the fact that I was an empath by my minister, I checked around for books to help me. This one by Rosetree was really helpful. I particularly liked the sections that helped me to 'shield' myself from other people's vibes. I recommend this book!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, Most Helpful Book I've Read!.......2005-12-23

Amazon.com Reviews

Sonia Choquette is an internationally acclaimed spiritual teacher who has taught individuals as well as corporate staff members to claim and understand their intuitive and creative potential. (Julia Cameron, author of The Artist's Way, considers Choquette her personal mentor and teacher.) Over the years, students have often asked Choquette how they can foster their children's innate intuition and creativity. This book is a welcome answer to this parental quest.

Choquette has divided this outstanding resource into three sections--each part representing the three stages of nurturing intuition. The first section teaches parents how they can awaken and commit to their own intuition, spirituality, and creativity. The second stage focuses specifically on "Embracing Intuition." Choquette discusses energy fields, children's auras (and the need for after-school aura cleansing), and fostering children's imaginations and inner guidance systems. Lastly, Choquette offers parents specific tools for gaining support from spiritual guides, teachers, healers, and helpers. Parents who long to discuss and learn more about raising spiritual beings will be greatly satisfied with this intelligent and altogether wise family resource. --Gail Hudson

Book Description

"Connecting to our intuition unites us with both our soul and the soul of the Universe, Divine Spirit. It takes away our fearful sense of isolation and inadequacy. It replaces fear with a sense of spiritual direction and safety. The world becomes friendly, nonadversarial, and welcoming. Life becomes joyful, amusing, generous, and abundant. This is the divine plan. The intuitive life is one of confidence, inner peace, and creative expression. What better gift to ourselves and our children?"

How can I help my children to thrive and prosper? How can I ensure that they will not become unhappy and frustrated as I have been? These are the questions that inspired Sonia Choquette to write this profound and accessible book explaining--through spiritual principles, modern-day parables, and practical exercises--how even busy parents can help children connect to their own source of divine guidance.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Teaching Children to Turst Themselves.......2007-03-20

This is a book from a many generation psychic on how to cultivate a home where children are trusted and are taught to trust themselves. Choquette herself was raised in a nurturing home by a mother who honored the six sense. If you have a sensitive child then this can help you create a supportive environment so that a child learns to trust themself and stay out of trouble. Children who are allowed to grow in their inner wisdom are more likely as adults to choose wisely compared to counterparts who are cut off from their gut.

On the flipside: Do you due diiligence on the credentials, even at the Ph.D. level of other more woo-woo writers on this field of energy and intuitive healing .... before you listen to their counsel. Many of them have Ph.D.'s from unaccredited places ... which means they didn't go through the same kind of rigor. Sonia is one of many popular New Agey type writers along with Doreen Virtue, Carolyn Myss, John Gray, Barbara De Angelis, etc .... who are examples of Ph.D.s whose source were unaccredited universities. Please keep this in mind when venturing out to learn from an inuitive healer ...

4 out of 5 stars Helped me get closer to my children.......2006-08-01

At first I thought this book would be too "fruity" for me. I am not particularly New Age, and the talk of aura cleansing and energy fields was a little offputting to me. But I decided to give it a try anyway. My daughter, who is almost 3, has an almost eerie insight into the way others in our family are feeling, and I wanted to explore and nurture this facet of her personality. I am glad I did. I have reread this book several times now (something I rarely do) and the exercises at the end of each chapter have led me to do a lot of personal reflection on the way I was raised and the way that in turn affects my relationships with my children. I feel that as a result of those reflections I am not only nurturing my daughter's intuition but I am closer emotionally to her, and a better parent to her, as a result. Pick up a copy and give it a read; you may be surprised at what happens in your family.

5 out of 5 stars Learning to Trust Comes From the Start.......2005-02-22

It is said that before children are trained to become human beings they are so truthful. Why? They are not yet trained in the art of denial. Their minds are clear enough to know an innate truth. Children have a wisdom all their own. Kids may be little but they are far more in tune with the what's so than adults. The Wise Child is a a program about nurturing this gift because the payoffs for a heightened awareness is positive. Being in tune is about going towards the positive and getting away from danger fast. Parents who believe in having an intuitive child will love this book.

I've also considered this a book for those who were somehow taught to shut down their intuitive abilities at a young age. So if you feel like reparenting your inner child towards a state of inner knowing ... this may be for you too.

5 out of 5 stars Learn how to create an environment that honors intuition!.......2001-04-04

The author has written such a beautiful book - filled with information, tools, reflections, and "exercises" -sure to help you (and your child) expand your awareness of intuition as well as how to embrace and share those "gut feelings". My favorite tool in this book was learning how when I'm apart from loved ones, I can imagine a protective light surrounding them, that keeps them safe and sends them my love. This book is truly a powerful, nurturing guide. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding book for parents!.......2001-02-01

This book has truly changed the way I am interacting with my children. I originally bought it because people have told me my second son (of three) is extremely intuitive and I should learn some special techniques to use with him; however, what I love most about this book is that it applies to ALL CHILDREN and will help any caring parent create a more loving environment for their family. And, I have read it twice already (something I rarely do...) I have pages marked, paragraphs underlined, and notes in the margins. I even made a "cheat sheet" to hang on the fridge for quick reference. I was going to loan it to a friend but I don't want to let go of my copy, which is why I am on this site; I am ordering it for three friends!!! This book is worth every penny and more. Read it!

If you are a person who is already deeply connected to yourself, this may be the book for you. However, if life has "conspired" to prevent you from feeling connected to yourself, you may be better off finding out who you really are first, THEN going into a program of psychic development like Sonia Choquette's. That said, other books have been written by people with great psychic abilities who actually address connecting to yourself through vocal toning, grounding (only minimally discussed by Ms. Choquette), and connecting with nature, all of which seem to be essential building blocks on a path toward the successful intuitive life. One of these books is The Beckoning Song of Your Soul by Nancy Marie. Another is Reconnecting with Nature, by Dr. Michael J. Cohen. Dr. Cohen's book is about "finding wellness through restoring our bond with the Earth. Most of us have been conditioned to ignore nearly 50 sensitivities that connect us to the natural world. This separation stress contributes to many of our environmental and personal problems." Including access to psychic abilities.

You may already have a great connection to yourself and to the earth. If so, go for Sonia's book!

I love all of Sonia`s books. They are the easiest to read and most enjoyable "self help" books I have ever read. I would recommend her books to anyone even if they aren't on a spiritual path to learn how to be psychic.
Her books are a gift and I am always sad when they end.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2006-07-12

Written like a long letter to a good friend, and covering everything from meditation to clearing out clutter (I love the 'clutter buddies' idea, we had a lot of fun w/ that!) to chakras, this book is GREAT for anyone at any point on their own personal psychic journey.

Book Description

Almost 20 years ago, a Harvard-trained neurosurgeon and researcher named Norman Shealy was introduced to a young woman with a special gift: she could "see" illness in other people with only her intuition to guide her. After extensive testing, Dr. Shealy concluded that her ability to diagnose illness - even from remote distances - was 93% accurate. Today that "medical intuitive" - Caroline Myss - is a legend in the field of intuition and energy healing, with three New York Times bestsellers to her credit, including her current blockbuster Sacred Contracts.

Now, in a major publishing event, these two pioneering voices are together again in a revolutionary self-care curriculum, on The Science of Medical Intuition.

First presented by Myss and Shealy at a series of influential workshops, The Science of Medical Intuition is designed to help listeners take control of their total health, through intuitive self-diagnosis and healing techniques. Complete on 12 enriching sessions - over 18 hours of learning - and enhanced by a large format workbook developed exclusively for this course, The Science of Medical Intuition covers every phase of Myss' and Shealy's groundbreaking approach to self-care including: The history of medical intuition • Intuition self-training • Chakra-by-chakra self-diagnosis • Healing with imagery • Surprising scientific evidence from medicine and physics • Past lives and present health • Decoding archetypal information, and much more. At last, here is a full toolbox of self-diagnostic practices, visualizations, and healing insights, taught by Myss and Shealy in their own words, on The Science of Medical Intuition.

5 out of 5 stars An enriching and rewarding self-teaching guide.......2003-07-19

The collaborative effort of Caroline Myss and Dr. Norm Shealy, The Science Of Medical Intuition: Self-diagnosis And Healing With Your Body's Energy Systems is an impressive and "user friendly" collection of twelve 60 minute lessons on audio compact discs that guide the listener in the process of approaching self-care and improved health through developing personal intuition. Inducting the reader into learning about chakras, creative visualization, guided imagery, the power of thought, and much, much more, The Science Of Medical Intuition is an enriching and rewarding self-teaching guide to extending personal awareness into scientific and metaphysical realms alike. The Science Of Medical Intuition would make a welcome and highly prized addition to dedicated Alternative Medicine and Metaphysical Studies collections.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Worth getting if you relate to Caroline Myss........2003-05-04

This is the most involved CD and Workbook set from Caroline that I have ever had the pleasure of owning. It is a very detailed tool box, and one that will provide hours of opportunity for self-reflection and awareness. Caroline Myss and Norman Shealy (MD) speak on the CD's. Dr Norm Shealy has some fascinating medical details concerning the visualisations contained within this series and their effect on raising the levels of Calcitonin and DHEA (as well as some other hormones) for example.
It is not a series that aims to teach you how to become a medical intuitive to read other people's energy. Rather, it aims to teach you to be more perceptive and intuitive about your own physical, mental and spiritual/energetic body.
It has some good Visualisations within it, that last ~ 30 mins each. The Ring of Fire, Earth, Air, Water and Crystal are great.
Interestingly, the Ring of Crystal Visualisation seems to go along almost the exact same points of focus in the body as I learnt through Healing Touch in a treatment known as the CHAKRA CONNECTION. This technique is acknowledged by Janet Mentgen founder of the Healing Touch program to have been learnt from the renowned Dr W.Brugh Joy (Author of "Joy's Way"). I have found the CHAKRA CONNECTION to have powerful and beneficial effects, both for people I work with and when done on myself. Although I have only done the Ring of Crystal visualisation a few times now, you can feel the points Norm Shealy focuses on to really be connecting.
I can recommend this series to those interested in energetic medicine and healing, and for those who have enjoyed previous Caroline Myss CD's. This Series can help empower everybody who chooses to use the tools given within it. For those with or without a medical background, the visualisations are clearly explained and diagrams given in the extensive 92 page workbook.
I think I will be re-listening to (as with all Caroline's CD's, because each time you listen to it you hear different gems of wisdom) and benefiting from this series on The Science of Medical Intuition for many years to come.
