    Book Description

Graham Mackintosh has done it again! With his characteristic humor and sense of wonder still undimmed, this beloved author brings his fans another armchair adventure in Baja California. This time, Mackintosh has substituted depth for breadth, exploring multiple aspects of just one area, the Sierra de San Pedro Mártir. His enthusiastic curiosity ranges from world history to natural history, and he writes with verve about everything from surviving thunderstorms to the experience of hearing about 9/11/01 on a small radio in a remote mountain tent. But Mackintosh is at his best writing about relationships, particularly his evolving relationship with his canine companions. His honesty, his maturing spirituality, and his easy way with words all combine to make "Nearer My Dog To Thee" a wonderful addition to the literature of Baja California. [Judy Goldstein Botello, Author of The Other Side]

The Sierra San Pedro Mártir is Baja California's "sky island," where an ancient forest seems to touch the stars. At last, in Graham Mackintosh, this unique, breathtaking, and alas, endangered place has its bard.

Nearer My Dog To Thee is a both charming and important page-turner of a book. When I put it down, I felt as if I had spent four glorious months in the Sierra San Pedro Mártir myself. And what an adventure it was! Shooting stars, packs of coyotes, a soaring eagle, thunderclaps and crashing trees... I learned about mushrooms and condors, stars and comets and the planet Mars, and best of all, I "met" Pedro, a rescued mutt from Rosarito, and Penny, the cute-as-a-button little coyote-chasing terrier.

This book will delight anyone who loves Baja California, its high sierra, and most of all, dogs. Graham Mackintosh shows us that, indeed, God is dog spelled backwards.

[C.M. Mayo, Author of Miraculous Air: Journey of a Thousand Miles through Baja California, the Other Mexico.]

    5 out of 5 stars MacKintosh's Best Baja Book.......2004-02-28

Graham MacKintosh's Into a Desert Place introduced us to this UK schoolteacher who walked the entire perimeter of Baja.
His writing style has a humility and a thoughtfulness which makes him a pleasure to read. Rather than committing the travel book era of using factual trivia to make the book more weighty, he uses allusions and background explanation as a way so that his life in the places he visits has a context and an imaginative quality. This book, Nearer My Dog to Thee, finds Mr. MacKintosh an older, but no less idealistic and whimsical,
traveller, now over 50. The "plot" of the story is quite simple.
Graham takes a pound pet from Rosarito to a remote Baja national park forest, for a Summer of camping. Mackintosh's non-fiction has a story-telling quality which makes the trip much less important than the travel.

So many travel book authors spend too much time trying to impress the reader with erudition or descriptions of the awe-inspiring or absurd. MacKintosh here merely lets a story flow, about a trip not many of us have taken, but we all wish and think we could. That may be the beauty of his writing--this is not "trip as impossible journey", but "the natural world as accessible to all".

I have a few minor quibbles with the book. Sometimes he refers to traits as "Mexican", when the traits are more properly the traits of some people he meets in Mexico. That's not to say that he's exhibiting any disturbing bias--he clearly is deeply fond of the Mexicans he meets. Rather, it's a narrative shorthand device I find imperfect.

Still, I give this book the highest recommendation. I'd read each of his other books, and thought them grand. But this more mature man exhibits a more mature writing style in this work.He still has the boyish enthusiasm, but it's now admixed with an integrated, mature perspective. I won't quite say that the "old Baja hand" is becoming old, because this one is refreshing and new. But I will say there's a richness here that really inspires.

It's hard to describe a MacKintosh book to the novice, because the combination of down-to-earth first person narrative and interesting historical detail is so deftly done. His narratives are friendly, in the way James Herriott short stories were amiable. But he casts his net quite widely--after matters of the heart and spirit, admissions of personal shortcoming, and sheer reverie at the joy of being alive.

I read Graham Mackintosh because while taking me to the middle of nowhere, he makes me nod and say "yes, I relate to that". I'll take that over any number of avalanche deaths and murderous seas in my travel reading. He's the travel writer for people who really prefer amusing, friendly novels.

5 out of 5 stars A joyful armchair adventure in Baja California.......2004-01-17

Nearer My Dog To Thee: A Summer In Baja's Sky Island is a joyful armchair adventure in Baja California, through the eyes of devoted dog lover Graham Mackintosh. An exciting memoir of shooting stars, wondrous wildlife, majestic wilderness, the ferocity of a storm, kindness shown a rescued mutt, and much more, Nearer My Dog To Thee is written in a smooth, accessible style that makes following the real-life saga an extra special treat. Nearer My Dog To Thee is enthusiastically recommended reading for armchair travelers in general, and nature lovers who have their own canine companions in particular!

    Book Description

The story of a man in love with a place, a woman, and a dream.

Tom Stone went to Greece one summer to write a novel -- and stayed twenty-two years. On Patmos, he fell in love with Danielle, a beautiful French painter. His novel completed and sold, he decided to stay a little longer.

Seven idyllic years later, they left Patmos for Crete. When a Patmian friend Theológos called and offered him a summer partnership in his beach tavérna, The Beautiful Helen, Stone jumped at the chance -- much to the dismay of his wife, who cautioned him not to forget the old adage about Greeks bearing gifts.

Her warning was well-founded: when back on Patmos, Stone quickly discovered that he was no longer a friend or patron but a competitor. He learned hard lessons about the Greeks' skill at bargaining and business while reluctantly coming to the realization that Theológos's offer of a partnership was indeed a Trojan horse.

Featuring Stone's recipes, including his own Chicken Retsina and the ultimate moussaka, The Summer of My Greek Tavérna is as much a love story as it is the grand, humorous, and sometimes bittersweet adventures of an American pursuing his dreams in a foreign land, a modern-day innocent abroad.

4 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable read.......2006-11-13

The writer has a very straightforward style that I truly enjoyed. The fact that this was a true story kept my interest and made me put the Greek Isles high on the list of places to visit in the next few years.
The author's sense of adventure and risk taking appeals to me.
At the end of this book, I felt that i had acquired a good bit of knowledge of the physical aspects of the islands and even more so about the culture.

4 out of 5 stars A bittersweet summer on the Isle of Patmos .......2006-07-24

You laugh and then you cry when you read this bittersweet memoir. The Summer of my Greek Taverna is a funny, poignant saga of a naive American, whose Greek friend, Theologos, offers him a "summer partnership" in The Beautiful Helen Taverna, located on the small Aegean Island of Patmos. Although his wife and Greek friends caution him to be aware of "Greeks bearing gifts," Stone jumps at the offer. His life is never the same, arriving home at night, at three or four in the morning, completely spent, with no time for sex or even a cuddle, and up at dawn to start another day at the restaurant, only to have his partner swindle him of the profits.
Stone captures the essense of the Greek people and writes lovingly of them, the good ones and the not-so-good ones. My Taverna is reminiscent of many excellent books of American expatriates living in foreign countries, all with their own unique experiences. Memoirs of an American Housewife in Japan is one of many. In spite of his trials and tribulations, Tom Stone survives his ordeal and returns to the states. He opens his own successful restaurant in Southern California. At the end the book, Stone lists "The Menu of the Beautiful Helen," with 20 recipes of his favorite Greek dishes in full detail. If the story doesn't stimulate you, the recipes will. A good read, bon appetit. Yassou.

5 out of 5 stars breath of fresh air.......2005-08-30

Reading these little expat memoirs used to be a pleasure, but now there are so many self-congratulatory accounts that they've long since begun to pall. Greek Taverna is a welcome exception. Stone manages to convey the essence of Greek island life, geography, and ambience without attempting to convince the reader that life in those parts is idyllic and carefree. Indeed, Tom and his family encounter as many problems and stumbling blocks as they might have in NYC, as well as enjoying the beauty and simplicity (all is relative). Reading his experiences is as refreshing as a dip in the Aegean. Bravo to Tom Stone for his honesty, sense of humor, and willingness to remain in Greece despite the bursting of the bubble of his dream.

5 out of 5 stars Stone's book on Greece is right on target in every way.......2005-01-25

As a Greek-American who was born, and lives in the US, but also lived in Greece for 12 years, I am always very interested in reading the experiences of expatriates, especially those from the US. I took some time to read through the other reviews here, especially focusing on the ones with negative things to say. I must say this, because I like to keep my reviews brief: Tom Stone did not produce the perfect book here, nor do I think we should expect that from him---what he did do was absolutely capture both the Greek mentality and spirit, the beauty of the land and its culture, and the very difficult divide in which foreigners who live in Greece full-time find themselves. I highly recommend this book not just for Greek diaspora who want to wax nostalgic of the mother country, but for ANY American heading over for a visit, if not a longer stay. I recently recommended this book to two proteges of mine who were headed to Greece for a short stay, and a semester abroad respectively, and both told me upon their returns that it was a priceless learning tool which enhanced their visits, as well as a very enjoyable read. I cant think of any higher recommendation than that of didacticism and real world, in-country experience. Well done, Mr Stone!

2 out of 5 stars The Summer of my Greek Taverna.......2003-03-18

Save your money and read "Extra Virgin" instead.

In a book about someone opening a greek restaurant, it takes the author half the pages to even begin cooking his first meal. Much of the book is given to the author's whining about money, unfair deals and his struggles.

And to Tom (the author), thanks for reminding us that you sleep in the nude. That added so much to the book.

No laugh out loud moments here and the recipes are just really filler to pad the book.

Few authors dare to truly analyze the complex natures of mother-daughter relationships. In her novel Summer Island, author Kristin Hannah perfectly captures the bittersweet, inspiring, disappointing, tragic, and human aspects of such a relationship. Set in the tranquil, present-day San Juan Islands, Summer Island presents itself as a deep investigation of the ramifications of a mother's abandonment of her two daughters. Unlike many similar novels, this one delivers the goods.

When Nora Bridge left her husband and her two daughters 10 years ago, she took the only route she could see, and assumed she still had her daughters' love. Now, though she is distant from her own daughters, Nora is the hostess of a radio advice show, where she advises listeners that "family comes first." When a scandal breaks and Nora hits rock bottom, she finds she has to rely on the two people she has betrayed most deeply: her daughters, Ruby and Caroline.

As an aspiring and failing comedian, Ruby's life in Los Angeles has shrunk into a directionless morass. She says when she dismisses superstition, "As if she needed magic to tell her that she was stuck in the spin cycle of her life." Though neither she nor Caroline are inclined to help their mother, Ruby finally agrees when a magazine offers to pay her for a tell-all exposé.

With a masterful balance of cutting wit, realistic dialogue, and lyrical description, Summer Island is by far Hannah's greatest work. Mothers, daughters, and sisters are sure to mark the passages and lend this novel to each other. If this is the standard for future Hannah novels, her fan base is sure to grow.--Nancy R.E. O'Brien

The author of the cherished bestseller On Mystic Lake returns with a poignant, funny, luminous novel about a mother and daughter—the complex ties that bind them, the past that separates them, and the healing that comes with forgiveness.

Years ago, Nora Bridge walked out on her marriage and left her daughters behind. She has since become a famous radio talk-show host and newspaper columnist beloved for her moral advice. Her youngest daughter, Ruby, is a struggling comedienne who uses her famous mother as fuel for her bitter, cynical humor. When the tabloids unearth a scandalous secret from Nora's past, their estrangement suddenly becomes dramatic: Nora is injured in an accident and a glossy magazine offers Ruby a fortune to write a tell-all about her mother. Under false pretenses, Ruby returns home to take care of the woman she hasn't spoken to for almost a decade.

Nora insists they retreat to Summer Island in the San Juans, to the lovely old house on the water where Ruby grew up, a place filled with childhood memories of love and joy and belonging. There Ruby is also reunited with her first love and his brother. Once, the three of them had been best friends, inseparable. Until the summer that Nora had left and everyone's hearts had been broken....

What began as an expose evolves, as Ruby writes, into an exploration of her family's past. Nora is not the woman Ruby has hated all these years. Witty, wise, and vulnerable, she is desperate to reconcile with her daughter. As the magazine deadline draws near and Ruby finishes what has begun to seem to her an act of brutal betrayal, she is forced to grow up and at last to look at her mother—and herself—through the eyes of a woman. And she must, finally, allow herself to love.

Summer Island is a beautiful novel, funny, tender, sad, and ultimately triumphant.

"Hannah is superb at delving into the characters' psyches and delineating nuances of feeling."

2 out of 5 stars A few steps above Danielle Steel.......2005-10-08

I am surprised to see this book rated so highly, because I really didn't think it was very good. I picked it up at a hotel in Europe while I was travelling, saw that it was on the New York Times bestseller list, and figured it had to be pretty decent. But I had just finished reading The Kite Runner, Bel Canto, and the Kalahari Typing School for Men, all of which I thought were very well written. It's true that she tackled some difficult subjects - and that's where she rose above Danielle Steel - but I didn't find the characters all that compelling, and the writing was uninspired.

    3 out of 5 stars Nice Story.......2005-01-13

This story was quite heartwarming. A family torn apart and the journey to find each other again. The story was sometimes predictable and boring but was well written. The author did a great job developing the characters. Enjoyable light reading.

This is not the 1st book I've read by Hannah. I loved On Mystic Lake and Between Sisters but this was just so-so. It was boring at times and predictable. It's a good story though about mothers and daughters and when relationships go astray. Try it..you might like it.

I received this book for free, and I'm glad I didn't pay anything for it. It was boring and predictable. Very drawn out. This is the first book I've read by Kristin Hannah. I surely hope her others are better and deeper than this one. Very disappointing.

The San Juan Islands in Washington State come alive in That Summer Place, an anthology set on fictional Spruce Island. In "Old Things" by Jill Barnett, California divorceé Catherine Winslow seeks to recreate the magic of her childhood with her two daughters on the island where her family spent many happy summers. She has no idea that she is about to revive a teenage romance as well.

In Debbie Macomber's "Private Paradise," widow Beth Graham is invited to stay on an island with friends. But when a last-minute accident keeps her friends from the island, Beth and her son end up sharing quarters with a handsome single father, John Livingstone, and his teenage daughter. Close quarters cause tempers to flare, but Beth and John just may manage to find love before the trip is over.

"Island Time" by Susan Wiggs finds workaholic Mitch Rutherford and Dr. Rosalinda Galvez busily conducting an environmental impact study of the island, although Mitch wonders if he will ever get anything done with the beautiful doctor around.

Barnett's trademark humor, Macomber's poignancy, and Wiggs's expert storytelling all combine to create the perfect summer beach book. --Maudeen Wachsmith

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful reading.......2007-01-09

I was unable to put the book down. As always Debbie Macomber is a wonderful author.

    4 out of 5 stars Magical setting!.......2005-08-18

This was a great summer read. The wonderful descriptions of the Pacific Northwest had me going online to research my dream vacation! If magical, serene, outdoorsy settings are important to you, this is the book for you! I especially enjoyed the stories by Jill Barnett and Susan Wiggs.

    4 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2001-01-20

This book includes three stories all revolving around one location, San Juan Islands in Washington State. One author started the stories by setting the scene, then two other authors continued with Debbie Macomber's story in the middle. I have enjoyed much of Macomber's work, so I selected this novel to a quick summer read. I truely enjoyed the combinations of the three authors, and all three stories were enchanting.

1 out of 5 stars Skip the Summer Place.......2000-08-17

This review is for the Audio version. I would not recommend this tape to anyone! The narrarators are soooo dramatic - for instance in the first story ( I can't even remember the title, it was so bad) the person reading the story emphasises every last word of the sentence, whispers and has to take a breath every few words. It is very annoying. I couldn't listen to any more than 20 minutes of the story - that's how bad she got on my nerves. The second story was not much better - she should have skipped the accent and I was disapointed in the storyline - Susan Wiggs is usually much better.

Maybe reading the book instead of listening would make a difference. But I will never know because there is no way I would waste more money on these short stories.

5 out of 5 stars Summer Sizzles, Seethes, and does the Macarena.......1998-10-06

Putting authors Jill Barnett, Susan Wiggs and Debbie Macomber together at Rainshadow Lodge was a brilliant idea - and what a gift for readers. For three women, Catherine Winslow, Beth Graham, and Dr. Rosalinda Galvez, the old Victorian summer house on a remote island in Puget Sound is a sanctuary, a place to draw a deep breath, rest, re-evaluate their lives, and heal. None of them expected to find love. For Catherine, love comes packaged in the shape of her first love - and wow, have the years been good to him! Rosalinda discovers a workaholic boss that needs shaking up - so she teaches him the Macarena and raises his blood pressure. Beth finds a man whose teen-age daughter just may give them both grey hairs before they get around to saying "I love you".

These may be stories set in a summer place, but they'll keep you awake, smiling, any time of the year.

    1 out of 5 stars HATE IT.......2007-09-22

I do not like this book at all. It is quite boring and is stupid. Free is a stupid name for a young boy. It is stupid how her Mom is "strong" when she really is a dumb person.

    5 out of 5 stars A real page turner!.......2007-07-31

I'm 12 years old and I love to read. This book was a great book! I couldn't put it down! I reccomend this book for kids 10 and up. There are some places in the book that would put a child under the age of 10 into confusion. There are a lot of life lessons in this book. But there are also some times where they swear or where something very sad or diffucult to understand will happen. Amazing writing and sentances that will just make you gasp!!! I loved it and i deffiantly reccomend you to read it! Its a real page turner!!

    5 out of 5 stars Ahhhhhh.......2007-07-10

This is one of those books you'll go "ahhhh" to after setting it down. If you model your thinking as you do a read aloud with your kids, this one would be great. It would also be a great lit circle book. My only warning is that an adult says the "s" word twice....so be prepared to have your kids handle that maturely. Loved it!!!

5 out of 5 stars Best read for kids or adults!.......2007-02-17

Seriously, this author writes better than the majority of popular adult fiction writers I have read lately. This is a real pager turner, very believable characters and engrossing. Can't wait for another from the author!

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2007-01-22

I've read about 40 children's books in the last three months as part of a library-related project. This book stands out as the very best children's book I have read recently and one that I'd highly recommend to all children in grades 5-8. Some of it is predictable, but you won't care since you are enjoying this book so much and you care about the characters. The story is well written and a wonderful debut book for this author. I look forward to reading more of her work.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Real Life Fairy Tale.......2006-10-16

This is a pleasant book that I bought because the cover attracted me; it looked like the type of cover that might have been on an old Trixie Belden book from years gone by. I liked the girls well enough and was relieved that this was not yet another abused child or fantasy story; there seems to be such a glut of them on the market right now! On the other hand, the entire Callahan series is like a real-life fairy tale because despite their little emotional problems, these kids have such a great life! They never want for anything; they either have the spending money or their grandmother buys it for them. They have no chores to do and their grandmother even has a friendly housekeeper who makes delicious dishes and cookies. It's friendly and fun.

3 out of 5 stars Breezy Summer Read.......2006-05-25

At first, it would seem that The Callahan Cousins couldn't be more different if they tried. Kind, worrisome Kate loves baking. Phoebe is a perfectionist who likes order, cleanliness, and bohemian fashion. Neeve has lived all over the world and has a sophisticated flair. Hillary is still reeling from her parents splitting up and thinks up ways to rebuild her family.

When these four get together for a parent-free summer at their grandmother's house, they bond almost immediately. They are twelve years old and determined to take over the world - or, at least, ride their bicycles around Gull Island and stir up an old family secret or two!

This is a good, clean story, just right for a breezy summer read. The book is suitable for ages 8 and up. Each reader will find a character to relate to, as each cousin has a distinct style, appearance, and main interest. Though the girls do engage in a little feud with another family on the island, their intentions are well-meant; they attempt to plant a flag in an attempt to mimic something their fathers did twenty years early. This summer does not only give each girl a self of independence, but one of togetherness, of family.

4 out of 5 stars The Callahan Cousins: Summer Begins.......2006-02-14

Do you think family matters most? Kate, Neeve, Pheobe, and Hillary do. These four,12 year old cousins are spending their whole summer at their grandmother, Gee's seaside estate, with no parents! The girls quickly find themselves caught up in an old rivalry involving a lost island, an ancient family lore, and a adventure they'll remember for a lifetime. The cousins show determination and trust as they defend their family's honor, but will they become family heroes or get themselves sent home? Read to find out how the author carries you into the adventure and the characters out!
This book shows how family bonds are very important and being a team is hard work, especially if you're related. Kate is the peacemaker and sometimes needs a boost from her cousins to convince her to go or do something. Neeve is very bold, a great leader and in her own way, spunky. Hillary is always ready for adventure and action and could easily take Neeve's spot. Pheobe loves to read and always supports her cousins. I think I am most like Hillary and Pheobe. I think I'm a mix of them because I like to read and to help out like Pheobe. I'm like Hillary because she likes to be a leader and share her ideas.
Elizabeth Doyle Carey uses such descriptive words it seems like you're in the book. For instance," The late afternoon sunlight poured over the island like golden honey as they pedaled back to The Sound". In this sentence I can really imagine the sunset looking down on Gull Island.
As you can see this book is a prize possession and you really should read it.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2005-11-29

I bought this book for my god-daughter who is 11. When she was through just the first chapter she called me to tell me, "it was the BEST book ever!" and could I please send her the 2nd book when it came out. She went on and on, so I decided to get a copy myself and start a book club with her. I was pleasently surprised at how much I enjoyed it myself. It has been a great bonding experience and helped me to find the kid in myself again.

2 out of 5 stars Shallow and unrealistic........2005-11-28

I have to disagree with the previous positive reviews. This book is average at best. The descriptions of the four cousins are shallow and stereotyped. One girl is a serious bookworm, one girl is outgoing and flamboyant, one is a timid homemaker, and the main character is dealing with her parents' divorce. The plot is slow moving. Much of it is a recital of how the girls spend their summer -- talking, swimming, eating candy, taking sailing classes, etc. The final outcome of the story is obvious from the beginning. Hillary will discover she doesn't have to earn her place in her family, and the four girls will become friends with the Bicket girl rather than her rival.

I found the constant emphasis on the wealth of the four 12-year-old cousins and their families to be irritating. In spite of the fact that they live far away from each other (New York, Florida, Colorado, and Singapore), the four cousins enjoy weekend visits and holiday get-togethers. The previous Christmas, they gathered in Vail, Colorado -- an expensive ski resort. Their grandmother owns an "enormous shingled house" on an island -- the biggest of all the homes on the island. It contains at least 14 bedrooms, a swimming pool, a tennis court, and a dock. Plus an "old barn-like guesthouse" where teenage grandchildren are allowed to stay. They don't just wear t-shirts or sweats or tennis shoes. They wear Nike and Reebok and Sweetie Sweats. When one of the girls unpacks her belonging, the reader discovers she has a laptop computer, an iPod, a digital camera, a handheld microscope, and a high-tech pedometer. The girls have plenty of spending money. Their parents gave them "a hefty allowance", plus "money practically bled out of Gee's (Grandmother's) pockets." It's okay to be wealthy, but most of these facets of their wealth fail to contribute to the storyline.

4 out of 5 stars Fun Summer Mystery.......2007-05-26

This book actually turned out better than I expected. From the cover alone I expected it to be a little cheesy, but it turned out to be pretty entertaining. It all begins with three friends, Zoe, Sage, and Nike, who decide to take up shares of a beach house on Fire Island with Sage's wealthy boss. At the very beginning of the summer, his wife, Maggie, turns up dead, floating in the tide. Most everyone, including the police, figure it was an accidental drowning. Although Maggie had an unusual amount of alcohol and vicodin in her system and seemed to be swimming alone and nude.

To Zoe, this situation seemed all too strange, and she put her documentary film making to use and began to investigate everyone in Maggie's life. After spending an entire summer upsetting everyone and blaming all the wrong people, she does eventually figure it all out.

It ends up being a little obvious, but it's still a fun summer book.

    5 out of 5 stars Killer Read.......2007-01-22

I just finished reading this book and could not put it down, literally, in the last fifty pages. The story is a good one - one that isn't expected. The characters are wonderful and easy to relate to - especially Zoe. Each chapter is written from a different character's point of view, which makes it even more entertaining to read. It keeps it fresh and interesting. There are funny parts of the book and it's not a romance novel by any means. It has a good plot, great characters, and keeps your interest. This is the first of Lynda Curnyn's novels that I've read and I will definitely be looking for another.

    3 out of 5 stars killer summer.......2006-10-02

killer summer starts out slow. i have about twenty pages left and it is just now starting to pick up the pace.

4 out of 5 stars I thought this was a fun book about a possible murder and the beach!.......2006-01-16

I live on Long Island and we have great beaches here.

Fire Island is a very "happening" place that has lots of action.

I loved that this story took place on Fire Island and not the main land. I loved the point of view from the different friends and family of the deceased, including the deceased herself- and how she got into this perdicament.

This would be a great book for any vacation, or beach read over the summer- I think you would feel like you were actually in the book.

    Fun- Fun- Fun book.

    4 out of 5 stars Good mystery.......2006-01-02

In this novel, Lynda Curnyn takes us to Fire Island, where three friends named Zoe, Sage, and Nick are sharing a beach house with clothing magnate Tom. Early in the story, Zoe finds the mistress of the house dead in the water. The police department doesn't expend too much energy on her death, so kind-hearted Zoe, haunted by the incident, decides to explore it further.

I agree with the other customer reviewers who said that Sage and Nick were selfish and unlikable. Zoe is the only character who cares about anyone other than herself. Nick is particularly oafish and annoying, although he redeems himself a little by the end, and I'm not sure why his point of view was included.

The shifts in point of view - among Zoe, Nick, Sage, and the dead woman, Maggie - are confusing, although including a dead woman's voice is a neat trick. I would have eliminated a good 50-75 pages (including all the parts narrated by Nick) for a trimmer, leaner mystery, but the writing itself was light and enjoyable.

Roger & Susie have made cruising to the Bahamas look easy and simple. This book has paid special attention to every detail and is well worth the few bucks it cost.

If you are planning this type of a cruise or just read about their adventures it worth every penny and more. Maybe we should send Roger & Susie some money for writing the book too!
