Kent Haruf, author of Plainsong, one of the most beloved novels in recent years, has wisely continued the franchise in Eventide, another foray into the prairie town of Holt, Colorado. We meet some of the same people--the McPheron brothers, Tom Guthrie and Maggie Jones, Victoria and her daughter Katie, and are introduced to new ones. Once again, the quirky bachelors Harold and Raymond McPheron, short on conversation and long on heart, form the sweet center of the book. The constants here are the brothers, the landscape--by turns hostile, demanding and renewing--and a few of the locals, whom we meet in varying degrees of their travails and redemption.

Victoria, the young pregnant woman the brothers took in in Plainsong, has gone off to college at Fort Collins, leaving the brothers standing at the kitchen counter, "drinking coffee and talking about how Victoria Roubideaux was doing a hundred and twenty-five miles away from home ... while they themselves were living as usual in the country in Holt County ... with so much less to account for now that she was gone, and a wind rising up and starting to whine outside the house." Much as Seinfeld was called the TV show about nothing, Haruf's books are so low-key and straightforward that a careless reader might miss the fact that they are about everything that life has to offer: love, sorrow, malice, understanding, and the connections that make and keep us human, to name a few.

DJ is an 11-year-old living alone with his grandfather, when he befriends two young girls whose father left for Alaska and decided not to return. Their mother is mired in grief and the three children, abandoned by the adults in their lives, find refuge in an old shed they make habitable. "So for a while the two sisters and the boy lay on the floor under the blankets, reading books in the dim candlelight, with the sun falling down outside in the alley, the three of them talking a little softly, drinking coffee from a thermos, and what was happening in the houses they'd come from, seemed, for that short time, of little importance." One of Haruf's particular gifts is in showing us people who give and take solace wherever it may be found.

An unfortunate disabled couple, parents of two young children, are trying to make their way in a world they cannot fathom. They are assisted by Rose Tyler, their caseworker, who is a friend of Maggie Jones. aggie, who drew Tom Guthrie out of his depression in Plainsong, is once again a catalyst for change when she introduces Rose to Raymond. There is no doubt more to come, as life in Holt, Colorado, continues to evolve and Kent Haruf keeps us informed. --Valerie Ryan

One of the most beloved novels in recent years, Plainsong was a bestseller from coast to coast—and now Kent Haruf returns to the High Plains community of Holt, Colorado, with a story of even more masterful authority.

When the McPheron brothers see Victoria Roubideaux, the single mother they'd taken in, move from their ranch to begin college, an emptiness opens before them—and for many other townspeople it also promises to be a long, hard winter. A young boy living alone with his grandfather helps out a neighbor whose husband, off in Alaska, suddenly isn't coming home, leaving her to raise their two daughters. At school the children of a disabled couple suffer indignities that their parents know all too well in their own lives, with only a social worker to look after them and a violent relative to endanger them further.

But in a small town a great many people encounter one another frequently, often surprisingly, and destinies soon become entwined—for good and for ill—as they confront events that sorely test the limits of their resilience and means, with no refuge available except what their own character and that of others afford them.

Spring eventually does reach across the land, and how the people of Eventide get there makes for an engrossing, profoundly moving novel rich in the wisdom, humor, and humanity for which Kent Haruf is justly acclaimed.

"This hardscrabble story kicks up a dust cloud of melancholy that will sting even the most hardened readers' eyes. At the end of some chapters I was left wondering, Who in America can still write like this? Who else has such confidence and such humility?"
   RON CHARLES, CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MONITOR

"A stunning novel of brothers, land, grief, and redemption... The dry, cold air of Colorado's high plains seems to intensify the light Kent Haruf shines on every character in his masterful novel Eventide. He brings such grace and care to his examination of the ways we fail and, sometimes, help one another, that the end result is a book of hope, hope as plain and hard-won as Haruf's keenly styled prose.
   MARK DOTY, O MAGAZINE

"This novelist writes with such unabashed wonder before life's mysteries, such compassion for frail humanity that he seems to have issued from another time, a better place."
   DAN CRYER, NEWSDAY

"Masterful... A full and satisfying novel complete unto itself [that] might be even more emotionally powerful than its predecessor..."
   KAREN SANDSTROM, CLEVELAND PLAIN DEALER

"In creating a place whose people are tethered to each other by history and emotion as much as place, Haruf's work is now competing with Faulkner's Mississippi, Sherwood Anderon's Midwest, and Wallace Stegner's northern California."

   MARK ATHITAKIS, CHICAGO SUN-TIMES

"Luminous... Haruf's uncanny ability to stay out of his characters' way is evident again in Eventide. What comes out of their mouths, whether it is kind, mean, ignorant, confused, intelligent or clouded by loneliness, is true and hard, spare as life on the plains... Eventide depicts a time, a place and its people so sincerely and so compellingly, with moments of such rare beauty, that the reader cannot walk away."

the book starts out in a stark enviroment and, each page adding meat to the theme. The book is good, has its humor and daily starkness. It is when you finish, you realize what good craftmanship delivered a truly satisfying story.

I thoroughly enjoyed this sequal to Plainsong, having gotten to know the characters so well. I have recommended this book to my friends.

This was a really good book. It was a good depiction of small town USA and the lives of simple people with some unfortunate circumstances. You really feel for the characters, both good and bad. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Better than Plainsong.......2006-09-23

I don't always expect much from a sequel, but this one works. The main protagonists are Harold and Raymond who have befriended the pregnant girl, Victoria, and have taken her under their care as the daughter they never had. As she leaves to go to school, they are lonely and sorrowful, and the sorrow becomes almost unbearable at Harold's death. Raymond in his gentle and stoic fashion continues his work on the ranch, but there are happier times ahead. The story has humor and pathos--couldn't we have guessed that his first interest in a woman would turn out badly? But there is redemption for him and for the neglected children of the story. One of the prominent images is the cattle. We all go through a weaning from the old ways and reluctant steps into the unknown. Haruf has such respect for the landscape and the work of the people who inhabit it. His descriptions are verging on poetry, but he is wise enough not to overdo it. The characters talk like real people. In spite of the solemn tone at times, the book contains gentle humor, and we are left at the end with a feeling that everything is going to be all right.

5 out of 5 stars A must for everyone........2005-03-28

I was introduced to both God Calling and God at Eventide by my mother in 1972 when I was a more than rebellious teenager. In quite desperation she had given me a hard back set of both books and suggested that I try looking for answers here instead of the bottom of a whisky bottle. For months after I had received them, they sat unopened on my dresser. My life was going nowhere. I was working in a dead end construction job, half-heartedly trying to raise money for college but spending more on motorcycles and parties than I spent on food or clothing.

During this time my mother was losing her battle with a mysterious illness which seemed to defy any diagnosis. Daily I watched her slip away, angry at God for taking this wonderful Christian woman from the family that loved her, and angry at her for continuously praising a seemingly uncaring God. As I drowned my sorrow in drugs and alcohol she slowly wasted away to skin and bone.

One evening after work I sat with her while she read from her ever present Bible. By this time she was so weak she could not hold it even with both hands and had to prop it against her serving tray in order to read it. She could barely lift her head from the pillows and her voice was so weak I had to lean over her to hear her. Still, her eyes filled with tears as she read to me about Gods love of us.

Then she asked me that dreaded question. Was I using the books she had given me? I lied. Of course I was. Then I fled back to my room and my release from all my cares. Soon I was sprawled across my couch, stoned, drunk, with a half bottle of Black Velvet in my hand and my eyes on the red and gold covers of what I thought would be the last gift she would ever give me. I snatched down the box set and opened God Calling. I quickly saw it had a verse for each day of the year and flipped to the days date.

It was eerie. In that entire book I don't think I could have found another passage that so spoke to my acing soul. I opened God at Eventide and again, it was as if someone had listened to my turbulent thoughts and had written a message of love and understanding just to me. Surly it was from the loving Son of a merciful God.

Over the years I have found that somehow I am always directed to the most appropriate message for whatever situation I am in. And I am not alone. Many friends and family members have found the same thing. That somehow they windup with just the exact message they need at that moment. Some have even suggested (only partly jokingly) that God moves the verses around just for them. Truly these are inspired works.

5 out of 5 stars Jesus Speaks To Us Today.......2002-05-27

I was, and still am, a devoted daily reader of "God Calling", by A.J. Russell. I was ecstatic when a friend from my Bible Study Class/Group, informed us that she had found the companion volume to "God Calling", being "God At Eventide", in a Good Will store, of all places. I immediately tried to buy and order a copy from one of our bookstores here in town. Astonishingly, I was told that it was no longer available. I quickly searched Amazon and found a used paperback edition. (Thank you God). Anyone who thinks that a mortal human being could write a devotional such as this, surely is in denial about the reality of Christ, Jesus, our Savior. This is truly the work of our Lord, our Savior, reaching out to us, to give us encouragement, hope, faith, comfort, and understanding in this nonsensical world in which we live. He gives us the answers to thoughts and questions which could, (if we did not have his guidance), torment our souls and make us into bitter pitiful human beings. Every single word must be read to comprehend his message to us. However, one must be fairly advanced in a personal relationship with "Him" in order to remotely understand what he is trying to tell us. Some people, or rather a good number of people, do not seem to connect at all with this book and it's companion book. This is a tragedy, for here is "His" wisdom, comfort and guidance. The words speak to you as though Christ, himself, was sitting in your living room or walking with you along the ocean as your best friend, giving you counsel. Also, you begin to understand the actual "Man, Jesus". He gives you glimpses into his character while being our teacher here on earth. He loved to prepare a feast for his disciples along the lakeshore, as a surprise! Jesus liked to cook! He also loved giving the wine gift at a wedding festival. For anyone who hungers and longs to know the Christ, Jesus, intimately, this book is a window into "Him." Also, he intended for this to be read in the evenings; thus, the meditations are shorter than those in "God Calling." "He" knows that we are tired at night and sometimes could fall short of the deep understanding for which he desires. He understands us. If one loves Jesus, you will love this book.

5 out of 5 stars "Great devotional for regular use"........1999-09-30

See "Review" for "God Calling". "Truly beneficial to the spirit's well-being!"

5 out of 5 stars If "God Calling" has touched you, this will too........1999-03-08

This is a continuation of God Calling. It was written by the same Two Listeners who and A.J.Russell edited this also. The readings tend to be a little shorter than God Calling, but the same warmth and love is evident. It is simply written, and will speak directly to the reader;there is noting vague about the messages. For those who enjoy a daily devotional that always seems to be right on target with where they are today, this book, like God Calling, will hit the mark.

Eventually and if we are blessed, we will experience Life's Eventide.
This book makes a wonderful gift for anyone who has lived a long life and who still enjoys reading. The book is easy to read with short powerful and meaningful readings that would be of interest to most older adults. It would also make an excellent ministry tool for use with older adults for those who serve and care for older adults.

In Willam Gay's debut novel, The Long Home, the devil comes to Tennessee in the form of one Dallas Hardin, a vile and violent man who brings tragedy in his wake. Set in the backwoods South of the 1940s, Gay's tale is populated with a colorful array of types familiar to readers of William Faulkner, Cormac McCarthy, and other practitioners of that particular brand of larger-than-life literature that seems to thrive south of the Mason-Dixon Line. Though the types might be familiar, Gay does an impressive job of making them his own, each with his or her distinctive, fully human qualities that transcend the roles they play as bootlegger, town drunk, or even hero.

The story opens when Dallas Hardin ("Old Nick," according to one character--"or whatever he's goin' by now") comes to town and wrests away home, wife, and whiskey still from the seriously ill Thomas Hovington. Only in a Southern novel could such an event be preceded by the inexplicable opening of a brimstone-scented pit near the victim's house without the reader even blinking an eye. Enter young Nathan Winer, hired by Hardin to build a honky-tonk. Winer starts out thinking he can earn his wage while steering clear of his employer's evil ways, but it soon becomes apparent that he can't--especially after he falls in love with Tom Hovington's daughter, now Hardin's stepdaughter, Amber Rose. Having given his heart, Nathan has taken the first inexorable step towards a final, deadly confrontation with the devil.

If Gay's themes are big--nothing less than the battle between good and evil--and his metaphors drawn unabashedly from that old-time religion, his novel is nonetheless firmly grounded in the flesh-and-bone world--sometimes nightmarishly so. There is a lot of blood spilt over the course of this novel, in myriad ways and in graphic detail. Indeed, one quality that The Long Home shares with most of Cormac McCarthy's work is that it is definitely not for the faint-hearted. But Gay balances the horror with moments of true beauty, and his novel is undeniably compelling. Enjoy it for its many strengths and for its promise of a bright literary future --Sheila Bright

Book Description

In a literary voice that is both original and powerfully unsettling, William Gay tells the story of Nathan Winer, a young and headstrong Tennessee carpenter who lost his father years ago to a human evil that is greater and closer at hand than any the boy can imagine-until he learns of it first-hand. Gay's remarkable debut novel, The Long Home, is also the story of Amber Rose, a beautiful young woman forced to live beneath that evil, who recognizes even as a child that Nathan is her first and last chance at escape. And it is the story of William Tell Oliver, a solitary old man who watches the growing evil from the dark woods and adds to his own weathered guilt by failing to do anything about it. Set in rural Tennessee in the 1940s, The Long Home will bring to mind once again the greatest Southern novelists and will haunt the reader with its sense of solitude, longing, and the deliverance that is always just out of reach.

5 out of 5 stars Standing Ovation.......2007-08-08

I read this book twice. First time was a couple years ago and I am glad I had the foresight to put it on my "do not lend" shelf. Having forgotten the story, I picked it up again last weekend and re-read it. I savored every word and found myself re-reading passages as the descriptions evoked every emotion from laughing out loud to pensive reflection. It was a gift, this writing, this story, these characters. Brilliant. Thank you William Gay.

5 out of 5 stars Superb tapestry of Tennessee rural life half a century ago.......2002-11-26

The battle of good versus evil is woven through three-dimensional characters, young and elderly. Remorseless murderer Dallas Hardin worsens with age, stealing another's wife and trying to prostitute her daughter. Young Nathan Winer, whose father Hardin killed when the boy was very young, violently objects. Elderly William Tell Oliver knows secrets and knows exactly how to help Winer. The unhurried climax literally tightened my nerves until the most satisfying end. --Roy L. Fish, author of short stories and the suspense novel, ICEMAN.

5 out of 5 stars THERE'S SHOT WHISKEY, AND THERE'S SIPPIN' WHISKEY..........2002-11-03

Shot whiskey is the type that so strong and just plain nasty that throwing it down your throat in a (hopefully) single swallow is the only way to imbibe it and survive. Sippin' whiskey, on the other hand, while still packing a punch, is more artfully crafted, with all sorts of artful nuances there to savor - you want to take your time with it, so you can more fully appreciate the care with which it was made. William Gay's prose is sippin' whiskey - there's a strength within that will leave you reeling, but there are so many subtleties to be found as well.

His characters are vivid and believable, and he brings them to life slowly, rather than burying the reader in a swamp of description. We get to know them as we would a person in our day-to-day lives, through their actions, conversations, and what thoughts they might care to share with us - it's an experience that makes reading this novel all the more precious and amazing. The descriptions that occur within these pages are subtle as well - his vocabulary is astonishing, and when he can't find a suitable word already in general usage, he constructs one (always to good advantage). Time after time, reading this incredible novel, I found myself going over a passage again and again, to make sure that I wasn't imagining the creative powers at work here.

Gay's literary gifts are amazing - but he never uses them in such a way as to overpower his characters. The novel is set in rural Tennessee in the 1940s - and that time and place is firmly established within the first few pages. I felt transported as I read it. Gay lives in Hohenwald, Tennessee - and his knowledge of the area and the people, and his obvious empathy toward them, give his fiction a sense of reality that is both gentle and ferocious.

Dirt farmers, laborers, bootleggers, lawmen (both honest and crooked), women and men old before their time, young people aching for something - anything - more than what they see around them, what they see as their future if they remain where they are. The story here is basically an old one - that of an evil presence in the midst of normalcy, ignored or tolerated by most of the citizens in the area, that slowly establishes itself as a power not to be questioned without dire retribution. What's the old saying? `Absolute power corrupts absolutely' - the mighty tend to fall mighty hard, and they seldom see it coming. The evil character in this novel - one Dallas Hardin, bootlegger, honkytonk operator, would-be pimp and many more unsavory occupations - is one of the most memorable baddies I've come across in some time. The evil within him is made palpable - you can feel it in the air, it will make your skin crawl - by William Gay's skill.

I've already started reading his second novel, and I've got my eye on his collected short stories as well. Gay's work was recommended to me by another author - and it's a recommendation for which I'll be grateful for a long, long time. This is high magick.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful.......2001-05-07

A southern novel has never pulled me in like this before. I needed something to read and I was at a friend's house. I asked her what her favorite book on her bookshelf was and she gave me this one. I'm glad she did. The writing is so powerful, and so lyrical, that I could not put it down. Beyond that, the sentences are so rich, bursting with information, that no pages could be skipped. This is a story about the deep south, before everyone had telephones and automobiles, set in a remote area of Tennessee, a place with its own history and its own rules. You will not regret reading this book.

4 out of 5 stars A Great First Novel.......2001-05-05

This man paints pictures in your head. Some people write books, some people tell stories and a select few can totally capture your imagination. With a fluid, easy style, William Gay, in his debut novel, falls into the last category. Set in Tennessee in the 1940s, I was transported to a time and place I've never been, yet it felt so familiar. I definitely want more of the same. Keep 'em coming please.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Relaxing read.......2006-05-09

Eventide is a well chosen title, because it reflects everything about the book, the pacing, the emotional journeys of the characters, and Carrie's peaceful approach toward death. However, the story is told in an almost impersonal way. It feels as if the reader is watching the story unfold as a whole, and never really gets deeply involved with any one character. Perhaps this is just the style of Martinusen's narrative; but, even so, reading this book is somewhat of a calming experience. That is most likely because of the poetic phrasing. Those looking for a relaxing read will find in Eventide a peaceful exploration into death and the resurrection of memories buried but not forgotten. - Devin B. Wieland, Christian Book Previews.com

    5 out of 5 stars Quiet Elegance.......2006-04-14

Cindy Martinusen has an elegance to her writing that draws us in slowly, embraces us, then turns our eyes to things weighty and deep. She's done this for us in previous novels, and once again she uses the sea as a symbol of life and death. As a small gift to previous readers, she even references places familiar from "The Salt Garden."

"Eventide" is a story of a man and a woman whose desire to understand the past draws them in an ever-tightening circle toward a young woman on her deathbed. Carrie, the dying woman, is a former love of Graham, and the best friend of Lauren. Their attempts to unravel old mysteries drive wedges between them, while also offering chances to draw them closer than ever. Along the way, Carrie's adoring husband and likeable son are pulled in as well.

This is a story of haunting beauty, profound insight, and intrigue. While wearing certain colors of a mystery and a romance novel, it takes on hues all its own--hues that match Martinusen's ability with words. For those longing for rich stories and characters, look no further.

          5 out of 5 stars Complete Transformation.......2000-05-02

My life has been transformed as a Christian. I thought I knew God, before...I know Him, now. The readings have been a part of my daily walk with God, for 5 years. I don't remember the person I was, before this revelation! I am a totally new person, in Him! Next to my Bible, this is the most precious gift I've EVER received. If you want a life changing experience, read it. Include it in your daily readings...I dare you! Thanks Debbie.

5 out of 5 stars A must for everyone to read!.......1999-06-13

I bought this book quickly on my lunch break for my mother who was dying of cancer. Two years after her death I pulled it from the shelves of my home library and started reading it. It's immediate impact on me was flabbergasting. Believe me! I could not read it at one sitting although it is a tiny book. As Russell puts it, "you cannot eat honey all day". So filling! So rich! For any and all people; for any and all circumstances. Those that fear the Y2K definately need to open the priceless treasure. The world we live in now needs this book to accompany their Bible. It most definately has the "anointing". What more can I say? Get a copy, carry it with you everywhere, read it often----all will be well!

5 out of 5 stars Christians need this little book.......1998-11-27

This little book is small, inexpensive, but contains so much. It will give you insight into the God of love and how much He wants to give to us. If you don't cry sometimes when reading this book, your heart may be too hard for your own good. Maybe this will help to soften it and give you some peace thru difficulties you must deal with. It will make a great companion to your Bible.

5 out of 5 stars A very special daily feeding.......1998-09-30

This is no ordinary daily journal! This book was a gift and it was a while before I read it. I never knew what I was missing. These connections with God have touched the very points where I was needing His touch. I have shed tears all through the days as God seemed to know what I needed most. This one is a keeper! And a giver!

5 out of 5 stars The most profound & enlightening book you'll ever read!.......1998-08-11

If you could read only one book in your entire life, this should be the one. Lost? Searching for meaning to your life? Ill? Financial problems? Emotional problems? Or, do you just want to know the meaning of life and everything? This book holds all the answers to all your questions and needs. Simple, and yet profound. This book will challenge you to grow in strength and spirituality. And, remind you that no growth process is ever easy. Yet, in its pages you will find a tenderness, love, and support that will move you to tears. A daily devotional that brings you new insight, year after year that you read it. If you own a copy of this book, you will cherish it more than any other possession. But, buy several, and pass them on to friend and stranger. This message needs to be shared...now more than ever.
