5 out of 5 stars Great Halo Books.......2007-10-02

These books are great for any Halo fan fan and are very much informative about things like the spartan program. This is a must buy set for any true Halo fan, or just a reader who wants a great set of books to read. Halo, Books 1-3 (The Flood; First Strike; The Fall of Reach)

5 out of 5 stars Awesome...That's all I can say right now........2007-09-26

These books were truely great. William C. Deitz rewened Halo: the Flood which is the only one that has parts from the game. But that book was still good. I'll admit, the parts about Captin Keyes in Halo: Fall of Reach (him alone) doing his little thing got really boring but nothing important was in that part so I skipped it. But the whole rest of the book was kick-a$$. Halo: Firt Strike was great, along side Halo: Fall of reach, maybe even a little beter than Fall of Reach. I have read all of these books 3 or 4 times. Unfortunately I got a little water on one of the books....

5 out of 5 stars Halo ruined my life.......2007-09-16

Fall of Reach was such a good addition to the Halo story line. It details all of the events that lead up to the first Halo game, and how the SPARTAN program came to be.

The Flood was, well, essentially a written version of the game. It's good in the sense that you get to see the story from the Covenants perspective, but it just drags on for some time as it details every shot and grenade that the chief fires.

First Strike was, by far, my favorite of the three. It details the events that happen on Reach while the Covenant are glassing the planet. Something is on Reach that the Covenant want really bad.

Watch out for the spelling errors in First Strike and Fall of Reach though, lawl.

5 out of 5 stars Great Set.......2007-09-03

this is actually my second set i bought; i think i lent my first set to a friend who i no longer remember and therefore cannot get back from. obviously i liked these books enough to buy them again despite the fact that i might find my old ones later.

5 out of 5 stars Very nice series.......2007-08-25

Provides a broadened view of the game series. Going back to playing the game knowing all this backstory makes it feel that much more epic.

As for the books themselves, they are well-written, and the story is top-notch.

On September 8, 1900, a massive hurricane slammed into Galveston, Texas. A tidal surge of some four feet in as many seconds inundated the city, while the wind destroyed thousands of buildings. By the time the water and winds subsided, entire streets had disappeared and as many as 10,000 were dead--making this the worst natural disaster in America's history.

In Isaac's Storm, Erik Larson blends science and history to tell the story of Galveston, its people, and the hurricane that devastated them. Drawing on hundreds of personal reminiscences of the storm, Larson follows individuals through the fateful day and the storm's aftermath. There's Louisa Rollfing, who begged her husband, August, not to go into town the morning of the storm; the Ursuline Sisters at St. Mary's orphanage who tied their charges to lengths of clothesline to keep them together; Judson Palmer, who huddled in his bathroom with his family and neighbors, hoping to ride out the storm. At the center of it all is Isaac Cline, employee of the nascent Weather Bureau, and his younger brother--and rival weatherman--Joseph. Larson does an excellent job of piecing together Isaac's life and reveals that Isaac was not the quick-thinking hero he claimed to be after the storm ended. The storm itself, however, is the book's true protagonist--and Larson describes its nuances in horrific detail.

At times the prose is a bit too purple, but Larson is engaging and keeps the book's tempo rising in pace with the wind and waves. Overall, Isaac's Storm recaptures at a time when, standing in the first year of the century, Americans felt like they ruled the world--and that even the weather was no real threat to their supremacy. Nature proved them wrong. --Sunny Delaney

Amazon.com Audiobook Review

Reading in his signature dispassionate style, narrator Edward Herrmann brings an eerie calm to this powerful chronicle of the deadliest storm ever to hit the United States--a huge and terribly destructive hurricane that struck land near Galveston, Texas in September of 1900. Author Erik Larson re-creates the events leading up to the disaster in astonishing detail, tracing the thoughts and actions of Isaac Cline, a scientist with America's burgeoning U.S. Weather Bureau. Cline's unwavering confidence--"In an age of scientific certainty one could not allow one's judgment to be clouded..."--blinds the meteorologist to the deadly onslaught about to be unleashed. Herrmann's calculated performance reflects the impending doom and dangers inherent to an unquestioned and absolute faith in science. (Running time: 5 hours, 3 cassettes) --George Laney

Book Description

September 8, 1900, began innocently in the seaside town of Galveston, Texas. Even Isaac Cline, resident meteorologist for the U.S. Weather Bureau failed to grasp the true meaning of the strange deep-sea swells and peculiar winds that greeted the city that morning. Mere hours later, Galveston found itself submerged in a monster hurricane that completely destroyed the town and killed over six thousand people in what remains the greatest natural disaster in American history--and Isaac Cline found himself the victim of a devestating personal tragedy.

Using Cline's own telegrams, letters, and reports, the testimony of scores of survivors, and our latest understanding of the science of hurricanes, Erik Larson builds a chronicle of one man's heroic struggle and fatal miscalculation in the face of a storm of unimaginable magnitude. Riveting, powerful, and unbearably suspenseful, Isaac's Storm is the story of what can happen when human arrogance meets the great uncontrollable force of nature.

3 out of 5 stars NO PICTURES.......2007-09-30

My first thoughts after finishing Isaac's storm was, that for such a big and devastating storm, it didn't seem do it justice. I wanted understanding (why didn't people leave?). I wanted some PICTURES!!.
As luck had it, someone who checked out the book before me had tucked a newspaper clipping pic in the inside flap, of the Bishops Palace and surrounding survivors w/ tons of lumber stacked up against them. THANK YOU whoever you are. I returned the picture to the flap.

Whatever happened to Dr. Samuel O.Young the amateur meteorologist? Sam kept a diary. And it seems was the only proactive person in town, in that he telegraphed his wife and children warning them not to come to Galveston because in his opinion, a big storm was coming.

One reviewer here claims Cline is a hero in Galveston but "Cline gave his official meteorological opinion that the thought of a hurricane ever doing any serious harm to Galveston was "An absurd delusion". Many residents had called for a seawall to protect the city, but Cline's statement helped to prevent its construction."
"Local legend has it that Cline took it upon himself to travel along the beach and other low-lying areas warning people personally of the storm's approach. This is based on Cline's own reports and has been called into question in recent years.
Cline did issue a hurricane warning without permission from the Bureau's central office in Washington, D.C. but by that point the city was already under water. I don't recall reading that Cline actually told anyone to get off the island..

I enjoyed the book but minus one star for lack of pictures.

I hear that John Edward Weems' book 'A Weekend in September' is also recommended reading on the 1900 storm.

4 out of 5 stars Erik Larson is Quickly Becoming a Favorite.......2007-09-10

"Isaac's Storm" is a fictionalized telling of a real-time tragedy. It tells the story of the hurricane that devastated Galveston and provides impressive details on the history and science of meteorology. For the story-telling aspect of the novel, Mr. Larson uses Isaac Cline, Galveston's weather observer at the time.

Erik Larson's committment to research and detail is impeccable. I wish he had been my history teacher in high school!

4 out of 5 stars Book is a Category 4.......2007-09-10

I enjoyed the book. It reminded me of a hurricane, starting slow but building as it went along.

4 out of 5 stars Issacc's Storm.......2007-07-23

Again, another book by a great author, Erik Larson. I couldn't put it down, but then again I live in Florida and Hurricanes are of special interest to me. I'm not sure if you didn't live in a hurricane area, example Alaska, that this book would strike you the way it did me.

5 out of 5 stars Very informative book.......2007-09-23

Ed McCabe does a great job of describing all methods of using oxygen for better health. I found the book to be so interesting that I had difficulty putting the book down.

With the information presented in the book, I would expect the reader to be much more informed about options in health care so that they may use their own judgement to pursue greater health.

4 out of 5 stars BETTER THAN MOST.......2007-08-18

This book is better than most on this subject matter. Most of these books tend to be exceedingly dry, droll listings of facts. This book is actually written in a fairly lively style. I enjoyed it.

Is it the best book I've ever read? Far from it. Is it the best book I've read on this particular subject? ithout a doubt.

Also recommended: Hydrogen Peroxide: Medical Miracle

4 out of 5 stars extensive book on oxygen therapies.......2007-07-28

This is the most extensive and detailed book I have read about oxygen therapies. All types of therapies, oxygen peroxide applications, the use of ozonation for air and water, some commercial available products with formulas that include oxygen, all are extensively explained in this book of around 600 pages, which I consider a reference on this subject.

On the minus side, most of the commercial products analysed are sold by a web site somehow related to the author of this book. There are many other products on the market, and it would be good that some of them were also referred in this book.

5 out of 5 stars LOTS of information.......2007-07-26

More than I will use but at least it is there for those who want it. I find it a little overwhelming and did not always know where to find the specific answer I was seeking but Hey! The guy wrote a very valuable book and is making an important contribution to our society with this information!

5 out of 5 stars Flood Your Body With Oxygen is the Bible of Health.......2007-07-20

I purchased this book along with Robert Barefoot's "The Calcium Factor" in search for answers to my chronic health complaints. When this book arrived I thought to myself, good Lord, it's huge, it'll take me forever to read it. I felt a tad bit overwhelmed but when I opened it up and started reading I couldn't put it down. I read the entire book in 2 days. I consider this book to be the Bible on Health. Every home should have a copy. I immediately purchased the book for my mother and then called her and told her that I am having a book sent to her and would she please humor me and read the book all the way through. She agreed. Needless to say the book turned her life around as well for which I will be eternally grateful. She then called my sister and said, "There's a book I want you to read, I'll buy it for you if you will read it". This book has now touched the lives of several of my family members and friends in a very dramatic way. This information and the information in Barefoot's book has turned my life around. I truly believe these books have saved my life.

Book Description

In late September 2005, Robert Polidori traveled to New Orleans to record the destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina and by the city's broken levees. He found the streets deserted, and, without electricity, eerily dark. The next day he began to photograph, house by house: "All the places I went in, the doors were just open. They had been opened by what I collectively call Ithe army,' of maybe 20 National Guards from New Hampshire, 15 policemen from Minneapolis, 20 firefighters from New York... On maybe half of them or a third of them that I went in, I think that the occupants had been there prior. And some of them did leave certain funeral-like mementos before they left. Maybe right after the waters receded they had the chance to just--to go back to their place and just see, and realize there's nothing worth saving." Amidst all this, Polidori has found something worth saving, has created mementos for those who could not return, documenting the paradoxically beautiful wreckage. In classical terms, he has found ruins. The abandoned houses he recorded were still waterlogged as he entered and as he learned (by trial and error, a process that including finding a dead body) the language of signs and codes in which rescue workers had spray-painted each house's siding. He sees the resulting photographs as the work of a psychological witness, mapping the lives of the absent and deceased through what remains of their belongings and their homes.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Katrina as Art.......2007-03-13

Silt has rendered a wonderous, pale beauty to the interior carnage of New Orlean's homes. Polidoris's project, a subsequentc 'invasion' of these domains, places on public record their devastation. It's a case of supreme technical skill, enshrining an ephemeral disaster. The denizens have hastily evacuated, leaving Polidori to rut in the trough of the city's ruin. Here, in one haunting page after another, the tidal muds that have rudely piled cars beneath houses in tragically asymmetrical congress, are made warm and close. It's relentless. You can almost handle the poignant detritus. We're led first through the haunting streets of uprooted poles, trees and weathereboards, of twisted metal. Then the rooms, the hearts and minds of individual suffering. Not snap-happy journalistic sensationalism, but hypnotically constructed images whose frozen testimonies have more permanence than the rented edifices they record. Polidori knows where to stand amidst the wreckage: his camera an unerring eye delving near and distantly with disturbing clarity. It is the very silence that entrances with singular eloquence and gravity. The wind and tide have subsided, but the havock endures in sulphurous washes and surreal configuration which 1000 installation artists would greet as a great funereal statement that transcends collective imagination. In a word, awesome, the currency of the Sublime. Polidori has wrested art from tragedy. Any of its 200 plus large format pages can be poured over for aesthetic reward, the more to dwell on vagabond Nature. Brilliant!

5 out of 5 stars Photography as a "process of revelation".......2007-02-08

"After the Flood", the latest book by French Canadian Photographer, Robert Polidori, about the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina is also his largest and most powerful. It is as if his books on Havana and Chernobyl were mere foretastes to this exceptional and moving work, and certainly anyone who has seen these two books came away with a feeling of the power and storytelling that Polidori's images can convey. Polidori has the gift of the detailed eye that can simultaneously give the viewer images of beauty and revulsion in objects and textures. These alone tell the stories. There are no images of people necessary. It is as if he is capturing the tracks and shadows that humanity has left behind. He was able to show this in the urban decay of Havana and of the horrors of the rapid evacuation and subsequent reclamation of nature in Chernobyl. In "After the Flood", he presents us with an almost encyclopedic presentation of the aftermath of the hurricane, flooding, wind, water and mud damage showing the fragility of our cities and the power of nature.

The book contains at least 400 images, which have been carefully arranged. The first images show parts of the city still under water and the receding water. The next group shows the destruction caused by water inside the houses. Furniture has been picked up by the flood and re-arranged and we see the effects of water on different materials and soon notice the tell-tale brown lines on the walls, sometimes over six feet high, showing the high water mark. Succeeding groups of images show the effects of mud, water and wind on buildings and cars that have been tossed around at random like toys. Sometimes cars rest against houses in bizarre angles and sometimes the houses are laying on top of the cars. Several pages show smaller images of streets where every house was damaged and abandoned. The last set of images shows the clean up. Mounds of refuse in front of houses, temporary trailers, houses being cleaned and repaired. The effect is very powerful as we see how the lives of hundreds of thousands were affected and how many must have lost everything.

The book can only give a taste of the incredible detail the images contain. In a recent exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art they could be seen as the original prints, each at about 40" by 54". They were taken with a large camera and according to Polidori with no lighting, as there was no electricity available at the time the shots were taken and lighting would have been to cumbersome in cramped and sometimes dangerous conditions. Only time exposures could show the incredible detail, which Polidori refers to as the "process of revelation". He call his work "a constant learning process", and anyone who looks at this book will not only learn, but will also ask questions as to how a disaster of this magnitude was possible, and to our place on this earth and our future here.

4 out of 5 stars must like stores like radio shack.......2007-06-15

This book describes how to make gadgets. If you already know about electricity and magnetism and basic physical science, buy this book and impress your young cousins/nephews/ nieces. there is survival stuff like collecting water from plants, safety stuff like making a fire extinguisher, and cool stuff like building a magnetic ring or wand to do things (hence the radio shack title).

Also a good purchase for budding mad scientist and science teacher.

1 out of 5 stars Useless - not worth the money.......2007-05-23

I found this book to be useless and lacking in creativity. I think I'm actually dumber for reading the section on how to connect things. It says to twist wires together or tape things together. I hate the fact that my first review is negative, but I felt compelled to write because I don't want others to be as disappointed as I was.

3 out of 5 stars Greasy Kids' Stuff.......2007-03-10

Color me disappointed. This would be a fun book for pre-teens to early teens, but the Make magazine / Burning Man crowd should stay away. Anyone with a basic grasp of physics or electronics probably won't find much to astound or amaze here.

4 out of 5 stars More for kids.......2007-01-05

The theme of this book is more for kids with nothing to do and have a little MacGyver in them. Not a bad bathroom read, but I don't really see myself ever using more than one or two of the projects described in the book. The theme is more for sneaking around which may be better for child thieves than survival tips.

4 out of 5 stars A little silly, but fun.......2006-11-19

This book is a sort of training manual for MacGyver wannabes. It's a collection of low-tech, cheap little projects that one can do in order to simulate "real" technology. You could certainly use some of these in an emergency, which is what the author suggests, but that's not really the point of the book in my view.

The real use would be for kids-- or, even better, kids and parents-- who want to mess around with some every day items in ways they haven't previously, have some fun, and enjoy some "Wow! Look at that!" moments. Had the author designed the book explicitly for that purpose, many of the negative reviews here wouldn't have been written.

So, the book is both pretty silly and enjoyable, but it's not any sort of survival manual. A word of advice: Avoid the sequel; the author used all of his good ideas in this volume.

The history of civil engineering may sound boring, but in David McCullough's hands it is, well, riveting. His award-winning histories of the Brooklyn Bridge and the Panama Canal were preceded by this account of the disastrous dam failure that drowned Johnstown, Pennsylvania, in 1889. Written while the last survivors of the flood were still alive, McCullough's narrative weaves the stories of the town, the wealthy men who owned the dam, and the forces of nature into a seamless whole. His account is unforgettable: "The wave kept on coming straight toward him, heading for the very heart of the city. Stores, houses, trees, everything was going down in front of it, and the closer it came, the bigger it seemed to grow.... The height of the wall of water was at least thirty-six feet at the center.... The drowning and devastation of the city took just about ten minutes." A powerful, definitive book, and a tribute to the thousands who died in America's worst inland flood. --Mary Ellen Curtin

Book Description

At the end of the last century, Johnstown, Pennsylvania, was a booming coal-and-steel town filled with hardworking families striving for a piece of the nation's burgeoning industrial prosperity. In the mountains above Johnstown, an old earth dam had been hastily rebuilt to create a lake for an exclusive summer resort patronized by the tycoons of that same industrial prosperity, among them Andrew Carnegie, Henry Clay Frick, and Andrew Mellon. Despite repeated warnings of possible danger, nothing was done about the dam. Then came May 31, 1889, when the dam burst, sending a wall of water thundering down the mountain, smashing through Johnstown, and killing more than 2,000 people. It was a tragedy that became a national scandal.

Graced by David McCullough's remarkable gift for writing richly textured, sympathetic social history, The Johnstown Flood is an absorbing, classic portrait of life in nineteenth-century America, of overweening confidence, of energy, and of tragedy. It also offers a powerful historical lesson for our century and all times: the danger of assuming that because people are in positions of responsibility they are necessarily behaving responsibly.

5 out of 5 stars Another Excellent Historical Piece by Mccullough.......2007-10-03

Very well researched, excellent narrative. Like Mcculough's other works (on Panama Canal and Truman, for example). The audiobook is well read and does not have a dull moment. Perfect for long trips.

5 out of 5 stars By Far, In my 57 years of life, The Johnstown Flood is the Absolute Best.......2007-08-25

As an avid reader from age 10 to present, having read over a thousand books or more, this it the ABSOLUTE BEST BOOK that I have read. I took the book with me to read during our summer vacation in Potter County, PA where my brother-in-law is President of a hunting cabin. This is located perhaps 100+ miles away, so I decided it was the 1st book that I would read during the week of 8/11 to 8/18, 2007.

Mr. McCullough must have boundless energy, a great I.Q., and a patient intensity of research ability, for there is tremendous details written within. Example: after all the mass of houses, trees, dead horses, human corpses, and anything else that you can imagine, washed down and jammed up at the large stone bridge west of Johnstown and lodged there, after round the clock efforts of all types including a large locomotive trying to budge the jam loose - and failed, it was finally set free to wash down the Conemaugh River by a tremendously huge charge of dynamite. Approximately 8 days later in a small town along this river, a live baby with a birthmark on its neck was pulled from the cradle it was carried in along the river. Long story made short - the baby was eventually recovered by her mother, a survivor of the flood, by identfying the birthmark! Numerous such incidents amazed me, and despite the lure of taking a hike in the mountains or fishing in a native trout stream nearby, I stayed on the open deck of the cabin and read on and on. I could not put the book down.

Everybody needs to read this book. I was reminded of the lifestyle of one generation to the next and how the millionaires who built the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club were ultimately responsible for this devasting flood. And if you do read this book, you might find yourself taking on a new perspective of life.

Please don't fail to read it. You also will include it in your list of alltime greatest books. Buy it immediatately!!

5 out of 5 stars Very interesting book.......2007-07-24

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. David McCullough has a gift for writing history through focusing on individuals involved in the events. The author writes about specific people, well-known and unknown, for whom the flood changed (or ended) their lives and lets us into their lives and homes through his vivid descriptions and impecable research. What a tragic, preventable event.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent History of Events Prior, During, and After the Johnstown Flood.......2007-07-16

In ten minutes time, a flood hit the Johnstown area in 1889, killing over 2,000 people, making it the most devastating flood in our history. This is an excellent book of the history, not only the flood itself, but of the events leading to this tragedy, and how Johnstown rebounded.

The water that would ultimately create the flood was from a reservoir the state legislature funded in 1836 to support a canal system idea that ultimately was abandoned. Thus, the dam no longer had its original purpose soon after it was built.

The dam fell to neglect. The dam would found to be defective and did break on a few occasions. Yet, there was little water collected behind the dam on those occasions and any damage was minor. The state legislature faced financial difficulties and approved only intermittent construction on the bridge through 1850. The Pennsylvania Railroad purchased the dam at a discounted price for its right of way. This new owner neglected the bridge.

A group of wealthy people from the Pittsburgh formed the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club and bought the dam to turn the dam's lake into a recreational area. Members of this club included Andrew Carnegie and Henry Clay Fricke. The club began renovating the dam, yet a huge rain destroyed all the previous repairs.

Lumbering operations had removed much timber that would have retained much water from a flood. The water behind the dam pushed the dam away in one big motion. The riverbed was mostly rock. The first large community hit was Woodvale, who lost 314 of its approximate 1,000 population in five minutes. When the flood hit Johnstown, the flood reached at least 34 feet in height (and some estimates are that it may have reached as high as 44 feet).

The book aptly describes of the aftermath of the flood. The press stirred paranoia that ethnic groups were looting the bodies. This later proved to be false. Yet they did not stop mob beatings of members of the accused group. The South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club was found responsible for the not properly repairing the dam in court, yet the club never paid any damages. Daniel Hastings, who achieved acclaim for his efforts in helping Johnstown rebound, would later be elected Governor. Three babies were born in Johnstown on the day of the flood, and they were given the names Flood Rhodes, Flood Raymond, and Moses Williams.

This is an excellent history of a horrible Pennsylvania disaster. It is written clearly and thoroughly describes the events of that time. This is a fantastic book for people interested in how people handle disasters, how such a flood could ever occur, and in Johnstown area history.

When Mother Nature rages, the physical results are never subtle. Because we cannot contain the weather, we can only react by tabulating the damage in dollar amounts, estimating the number of people left homeless, and laying the plans for rebuilding. But as John M. Barry expertly details in Rising Tide: The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 and How It Changed America, some calamities transform much more than the landscape.

While tracing the history of the nation's most destructive natural disaster, Barry explains how ineptitude and greed helped cause the flood, and how the policies created to deal with the disaster changed the culture of the Mississippi Delta. Existing racial rifts expanded, helping to launch Herbert Hoover into the White House and shifting the political alliances of many blacks in the process. An absorbing account of a little-known, yet monumental event in American history, Rising Tide reveals how human behavior proved more destructive than the swollen river itself.

Book Description

An American epic of science, politics, race, honor, high society, and the Mississippi River, Rising Tide tells the riveting and nearly forgotten story of the greatest natural disaster this country has ever known -- the Mississippi flood of 1927. The river inundated the homes of nearly one million people, helped elect Huey Long governor and made Herbert Hoover president, drove hundreds of thousands of blacks north, and transformed American society and politics forever.

A New York Times Notable Book of the Year, winner of the Southern Book Critics Circle Award and the Lillian Smith Award.

5 out of 5 stars History repeats itself........2007-08-20

I happened to read this book when I was home from work waiting for Hurricane Katrina to make landfall (I live in Baton Rouge, 80 miles North of New Orleans). It was an ironic that I read this book that day. I had no idea of the book's relevance to that day's events. John Barry documents the events and reasons leading up to the great flood of 1927 in incredible detail. Being from South Louisiana, I knew a little about the flood, but most of what I thought I knew was not correct. The facts of what the US Corp of Engineers did or did not do is readily available from a number of sources. The Corp of Engineer's competence or incompetence is subject to debate (Well, It was subject to debate until August 29, 2005). The real revelations as far as I am concerned are the cultural and economic factors that Barry weaves into an enlightening book. It shows how the powers that ruled New Orleans (Canal Bank, Whitney Bank, Hibernia Bank and the Times Picayune Newspaper) deceived and lied to maintain their power and riches at everyone else's expense. St Bernard Parish (County to most of you) was sacrificed by bombing the levee system below New Orleans to take the pressure off of the New Orleans levees (as it turns out, unnecessarily). The amazing part of the book is the "how it changed America" part. From the creation of the Federal based welfare system, Herbert Hoover's rise to stardom and the ultimate election of Huey Long as Governor of Louisiana (and had he not been assassinated, may be President of the United States), the 1927 flood changed America more than any event I can think of other than the Revolutionary War and Civil War. This is a GREAT book worth your time to read. It is said that in order to know the future, you must study the past. Too bad we're still not paying attention !!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Rising Tide.......2007-02-18

I've barely dipped into the first chapter of this, plus reading at random to wherever the book fell open, and I'm awed. Barry's attention to detail and exhaustive documentation of his sources are exemplary. It is also a darn good read, and it is his thoroughness which makes it that way -- the principal players stand out like characters in a good novel. There was recently a PBS special (I believe it was The American Experience) on the history of New Orleans, and although Barry appeared in it, not nearly enough attention was paid to the 1927 flood, especially to some of the most unsavory aspects such as the machinations of the local power structure. Other than the pleasure of reading this book, I highly recommend it because we had a replay of this in Katrina with a similar display of greed, insensitivity and incompetence. And if it can happen in New Orleans, it can happen anywhere!

5 out of 5 stars The Great Flood.......2006-12-14

I had never heard of the Mississippi flood before picking up this book and I am surprised that I had never hard of it after reading about it. This is arguably the greatest natural disaster to hit the United States until Hurricane Katrina. To see the response of the government then and now there are shocking similarities The army corp of engineers makes a similar performance and it is through private enterprise and local political networks that areas are saved. One of the sadder points in the book is the treatment of African Americans and southern racism in this time period is clearly displayed in most areas. The flood which wiped out parts of Mississippi and spread down to New Orleans was catastrophic. Seeing the idea of detonating levees and sacrificing areas of save others were tough choices that have implications in the post Katrina world. This is a highly recommend book that will make one think about natural disaster response from a truly catastrophic event.

5 out of 5 stars They're Gonna Wash Us Away - The Rest of the Story.......2006-11-02

Randy Newman told the story of the great Louisiana flood of 1927 in a few memorable but not very historically accurate verses. Barry tells it with painstaking research and narrative of 75 years surrounding and including 1927. He opens with the civil engineering debate that raged for years about how to "control" the Mississippi River--levees or controlled drainage. Once the flood happens he focuses on how people dealt with it as it was happening (race relations in the early 20th century were sorely tested) and afterwards (St. Bernard and Plaquemines Parishes, having been sacrifice to "save" New Orleans, were left almost low and dry when it came time to distribute money for recovery---sound familiar?) One memorable theme is that nature is unsympathetic to political compromise. Barry rivals David McCullough in the genre of popular history writers.

4 out of 5 stars Outstanding Piece of Work in History, Politics and Humanity.......2006-10-26

Mr. Barry has done an exceptional job of weaving the elements of modern life together, natural disaster, power, money, politics, race together to tell an ingrossing and disturbing story, one that is a relevant today as it was when it happened in the late twenties. America is still affected by what happened then and faces many of the same challenges today--Katrina and whenever or whereever there is great human suffering brought on by natural disaster. (Just wait until the New Madrid earthquake occurs again. That may be the only natural disaster that could rival this flood and its effect on our nation, society and culture.)

Power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely, and money--having it--makes that corruption and the arrogance that comes with it, even more dangerous, despicable and deadly. We face all of those issues and threats today, and it is not limited to a political party, but rather to class,to wealth and, sadly and alarmingly, to those we "elect" to represent and protect us.

This book is a sobering look at America as it was, and, sadly, as it is. Political parties do not matter....This not about man's highest, nor is it about man's lowest. It is about man as he is...

Book Description

Curt Flood and the landmark Supreme Court case that changed professional sports forever

Upon being traded to the Philadelphia Phillies in 1969, Curt Flood, an All-Star center fielder for the St. Louis Cardinals, wanted nothing more than to stay with St. Louis. But his only options were to report to Philadelphia or retire. Instead, Flood sued Major League Baseball for his freedom, hoping to invalidate the reserve clause in his contract, which bound a player to his team for life. Flood took his lawsuit all the way to the Supreme Court, and though he ultimately lost, his decision to sue cost him his career and a chance at the Hall of Fame. But Flood's place in baseball history, like that of Jackie Robinson's, extends far beyond his accomplishments on the ballfield. Just three years later, the era of free agency that all professional athletes enjoy today became a reality.

In A Well-Paid Slave, the first extended treatment of Flood and his lawsuit, Brad Snyder examines this long-misunderstood case and its impact on professional sports. He reveals the twisted logic and behind-the-scenes vote switching behind the court's decision and explains Flood's decision to sue in the context of his experiences during the civil rights movement. Astutely and dramatically told, A Well-Paid Slave will appeal broadly to fans of sports history, legal affairs, and American culture.

4 out of 5 stars A disagreement with Arhtur Goldberg's grandson.......2007-09-17

Arthur Goldberg's grandson takes strong issue with Brad Snyder's excellent and wonderful book about Curt Flood for the singular, though substantial, reason that Mr. Snyder was, in Mr. Goldberg's view, unfair to his famous and respected grandfather, former Supreme Court Justice and former UN Ambassador Arthur Goldberg.

As someone who recently finished Mr. Snyder's book, and found it outstanding, I wish to respond to Mr. Goldberg's defense of his grandfather and defend Mr. Snyder:

When one notes everything Mr. Goldberg states in his earlier review, it remains true to the portrait Mr. Snyder has painted of Mr. Goldberg as more accurate than inacurrate. Goldberg's vanity did play a significant role in his leaving the Supreme Court to take the position of UN Ambassador. Goldberg did mislead Marvin Miller when he said he would not run for governor of New York when Goldberg already knew he was being approached to run for governor of New York against a then very vulnerable Nelson Rockefeller. Goldberg refused to work up the Flood case and take it as seriously as was needed. The reviewer Goldberg's statement claims Topkis and the other quoted associate lawyer had an ax to grind, with no evidence for this statement provided--which leaves me unpersuaded. Having been in the position of the associated lawyers in various lawsuits, and sometimes seeing lead lawyers concentrate on everything else but the case, it makes me strongly believe Topkis and the others, (Yes, I'm a trial lawyer by trade).

The other sources Snyder relied upon with reference to the Justices of the Supreme Court's views of the case make clear the written briefs, which Goldberg had little to do with, had persuaded the justices who voted for Flood's position. Goldberg's oral argument was not a good one--and again, there was a lack of preparation that is also not denied by his grandson.

My father, a retired lawyer, and I have always held Arthur Goldberg in high esteem. I still think the US was a poorer nation with the loss of Goldberg from that august bench. Yes, Snyder's book could have found some room to say that Goldberg was important in crafting Resolution 242 at the UN and may have been too harsh IF he said Goldberg's tenure at the UN was a "failure." But again, Goldberg's performance in the Flood case was a disaster no matter which way you try to spin it.

The greatest irony is that had Goldberg remained on the Supreme Court, he would surely have supported Flood, and might have been the difference for Flood.

Synder's book is, overall, fabulous and a great read--with lots of information and analysis that really opened my eyes to a lot of issues surrounding the Flood lawsuit and the times in which Flood lived. If anyone wants to read a book about baseball and American society, "A Well Paid Slave" is the place to start. It is an important achivement and should be recognized as such.

I edited this review on September 26, 2007 to fix some typos/grammar errors. I also wish to be clear that I intended to rate this book as having 5 stars, but the editing process won't let me change it. It is one of the best sports bios I've read in a long time, probably since the Vince Lombardi bio by Maraniss and the Jackie Robinson bio by Rampersad.

5 out of 5 stars Well Paid Slave is a must read .......2007-08-31

Mr. Snyder I am reading your book about Curt Flood and I find it to be one of the best non-fiction books I have ever read. I love baseball (but as a life long Texas Rangers fan, it has not loved me back) and have said on many occasions that each player in professional baseball should have two pictures that they carry with them; Jackie Robinson because he helped to make the game inclusive and Curt Flood, because he freed the players from their indentured servitude and gave them the ability to sale their services as they see fit. Now having said that, I have on more than one occasion cursed a player as he was leaving my team in free agency, to, as they say in the cliché "secure my family's future," but that is the fan in me and as a fan I am not required to be objective. When I think of what it would be like if I could not sell my skills to another company at a time and location of my choosing, I realize that what Curt Flood wanted from baseball is completely fair. Through reading your book, I see Curt as sort of a Christ-like figure; certainly not without his flaws, but possessing a level of principle and dignity that is sorely lacking in this day and age. To do what he did for others is the greatest self-sacrifice that one can aspire to.

Again, thanks for this book. I will recommend it to anyone who has a real interest in learning more about this important subject.

1 out of 5 stars Not an adequate work of history.......2007-06-13

I gave this review a single star because it does shed some light on the events surrounding Curt Flood's courageous stance against management and the reserve clause. As a work of history, however, it falls far short of the demands required by the field. On reading it, I wasn't surprised that I obtained my copy from the remainder bin.

Simply put, this is an ugly book, and is much more a polemic than a work of historical inquiry. Given failings in its bibliography, it would not pass peer review, which claim I feel comfortable making given my doctorate in modern history. Reading Snyder's account, I was reminded of the words of an earlier and better historian, Gaetano Salvemini who declared that objectivity is a myth, but intellectual honesty is a duty, that an author had to be aware of their own limitations and prejudices, and the dangers that these presented to their readers. In this book, we have a clear example of an author who has failed in this regard.

Snyder's dislike of Flood's counsel, Justice Arthur J. Goldberg is palpable, and distorts his entire text. No personal failing is left unmentioned, and no accolade goes undiminished. Goldberg's time at the UN is described as a failure, with not a word about his diplomatic triumphs during the Six-Day War. Indeed, this narrative is not so much about the hero Curt Flood as it is about the goat Arthur Goldberg. Thus, uninformed readers, as witnessed by various reviews in this forum, feel comfortable making unwarranted charges against Arthur Goldberg such as that he was not a man of his word. This is outrageous given his proven reputation for unparalleled integrity. Disturbingly, the author's dislike of the erstwhile justice leads him into the murky waters of intellectual dishonesty. In one instance, he writes that Goldberg insisted on being chaffeured to and from his office. Several chapters later, he then quotes an anonymous (and as such, totally unacceptable) source who claimed that Goldberg got lost driving to the Supreme Court on the day of the hearing. Other examples include Snyder's condemnation of Goldberg's pro bono work at Paul, Weiss (surely something to be praised rather than mocked), which in the context of this book, is presented as evidence that Goldberg cost the law firm more money than he generated. That is a risible claim.

Snyder makes use of anonymous interviews which, while appropriate to a work of journalism, are utterly unacceptable in historical inquiry. This work is not about current events, but treats its matter as if it transpired in the present. As such, Snyder relies on interviews too much as prima facie evidence, citing as fact statements about Justice Goldberg made by men who have grievances against him. Indeed, we are left to believe that one such person was described by Goldberg as being the better lawyer, the only authority for this "fact" being the man who reported the claim and was, allegedly, its object. While interviewing these self-serving individuals, Snyder made no effort to interview persons who might have offered a more balanced assessment of Goldberg's role in this event, e.g., his longstanding personal secretary, the Justice's son, and the majority of his law clerks (only two were interviewed, and only one provided any information of substance, much of which falls into self-service).

Arthur Goldberg was my grandfather, and he was not without his limitations. Certainly, he had an ego, which is hardly a commodity in short supply among the nation's leaders. His performance in the Curt Flood case was not his best, but he did succeed in convincing several of the justices on the court to vote on Flood's behalf. This number initially included the Chief Justice, which was a remarkable achievement, given his hostility to the case. Snyder overlooks these points because they do not serve his jaundiced account of Arthur Goldberg's character.

Baseball has been described as a useful metaphor for more important matters. This instance is no exception. Even Hall of Famers strike out sometime. On this occasion, Goldberg did as well, but he hardly went down swinging at three pitches hanging over the middle of the plate. If we are to believe Snyder's account, we are to accept editorial presented as fact, and multiple citations based on anonymous interviews with persons who are at best, cowards, and at worst, liars. A truly objective and well-written history would find fault with some of Goldberg's arguments and even some of his actions, but his conduct in this matter was better, and his arguments were more successful than Snyder would have us believe. Finally, his personal qualities were much greater than a reader of this book would realize.

A lesser lawyer with uncertain historical skills has attempted to denigrate the memory of a greater man. It is a shame that Curt Flood has been so ill-used.

4 out of 5 stars Extremely Well Written Book Documenting an Important Time In Baseball.......2007-04-02

I learned a great deal from this book. I was under the impression that Curt Flood was traded, refused to go to the new team, filed a lawsuit, and it was settled before the start of the season. Not true. Not even close to true. I also was under the impression that he won his lawsuit. This is also not true.

This was a fantastic book. It was extremely well written and given the fact that the author quit his high paying Washington law firm job to write the book without any deal from a publisher makes it even better. I wish that the book covered Flood's personal life a little closer because from Snyder's viewpoint he glosses over a lot of that. Despite the references to his excessive drinking, Flood comes off as a martyr, which he was to a certain extent. However one cannot be a terrible alcoholic without having some real in-depth problems. The family issues, the carousing, and the couple of brushes with the law explained in the book only cover a small amount of the personal life. I realize this book was about the court case, not necessarily a biography of Flood. The chapters about the court case were the least interesting to me, other than I learned how the Supreme Court works sometimes. All in all though, it was a fantastic read and I recommend it to anyone interested in baseball or professional sports. I believe it should be mandatory reading for anyone signing a professional sports contract. Every one of them owes Curt Flood an enormous amount of gratitude. His sacrifice, to me, is greater than the one Jackie Robinson went through. I don't mean to belittle Robinson's achievement, but Flood went through the same player problems that Robinson did in the Carolina minor leagues; not exactly a bastion of racial tolerance. In addition, he gave up his career for something that he believed in. Most of us would never do that and to me that makes Curt Flood one of the most important people of the last century.

Brad Snyder's "A Well Paid Slave" is a book every baseball fan should read. The story of Curt Flood and his fight for free agency is one of the most pivotal events in professional sports.

Snyder is the ideal person to write about Flood's battle. He covered the Orioles for the Baltimore Sun, is a lawyer and a gifted writer. He brings all of his strengths to this book. As a result, it is thoroughly researched, easy to read, and explains the legal proceedings in layman terms. Snyder tells Flood's story, warts and all.

Flood's personal sacrifice was great, and few players appreciated it. Despite Flood's personal shortcomings (alcoholism, womanizing, and a deceiving portrait business), you can't help but to feel sympathetic toward him. The majority of the fans and sportswriters in 1970, thought of Flood, who made $100,000 a year, as greedy. They saw him as someone who was trying to ruin the game.

It was interesting to read how little support Flood received from the other black superstars of the era--Frank Robinson, Hank Aaron, and others. They were too concerned about their futures in baseball to rock the boat. It was also interesting to find out what happened to Flood after his retirement from baseball.

The book bogs down a bit in the sections about the Supreme Court case, but after all this is a book about a law suit. And, Snyder deftly handles the material.

Book Description

IBM Rational Application Developer is a very important tool for developers, but it is also a complex product. An Introduction to IBM Rational Application Developer, A Guided Tour is designed to jumpstart the learning process with its focus on interactive hands-on learning through a wide variety of useful, practical, end-to-end tutorials.

Hands-on exercises and in-depth explanations form chapter "modules" within the book, thereby providing a complete step-by-step guide to each specific topic while allowing readers to pick and choose which tutorials they want (or need) to study without necessarily going in chapter order. And, because of its modular structure, each tutorial's sample code is independent of any earlier tutorials, freeing readers to skip from tutorial to tutorial, based on their specific knowledge requirements. Because of this design, this book continues to be a useful reference as a reader's "need to know" increases.

Using this book's method, readers quickly learn IBM Rational Application Developer—regardless of their previous level of experience or inexperience. For beginners, there are tutorials that teach how to create Web, EJB, JMS, and Web Services applications using Rational Application Developer. For the more advanced readers, there are tutorials on security, publishing, testing, team development, profiling, and logging. Written to appeal to as broad an audience as possible, the tutorials run on common databases, including IBM Cloudscape, IBM DB2® Universal Database, Microsoft® SQL Server, Sybase® Enterprise Systems, and Oracle® Database.

4 out of 5 stars Does the job.......2007-08-02

Of the three or so books I bought to help figure out Websphere, this one is doing the best job. I don't love the book because it dives right into tutorials, and doesn't always give me enough of a big picture. But this big picture can be a difficult one to convey. When I needed to deploy an app and get the JNDI names right for getting to my data source, this book had a chapter that explains exactly that. It explains both the steps to get it done in the GUI, and a bit of how and why it works like it does.

I looked at some other books from IBM press, like Enterprise Java Programming with IBM Websphere, and they were a bit too much, too soon for me. I might, however, recommend the Redbooks, if you can get them.

3 out of 5 stars Almost a great tool.......2007-02-22

I am using this book for a class which is requiring us to go through all of the tutorials.

Pros-
You will gain decent experience with writing java servlets, database apps and XML.

Cons-
We are using the most recent version of RAD so some of the pictures in the book are not exactly the same, but they are close enough for you to figure it out the steps you need to take. The tutorials do well at teaching their topics (writing an xml file, java servlets, filters, etc.) but they do not explain a lot about RAD itself. Many times I could not get a tutorial to work because of something as trivial as a setting with the server that they forgot to mention in the tutorial. Be prepared to be frustrated with some of them.

4 out of 5 stars Good Examples.......2007-01-09

Overall I am impressed with the well structured chapters. Very well organised.
Examples used in this book are very practical and easy to follow.

If there is a new edition in the future, would be great if it can incorporate chapters on plugins like Hibernate, Business Process Manager (Workflow) and Business Rules inside RAD.

1 out of 5 stars Errors Galore!.......2006-07-19

On page one it states that it is "aimed at beginners who want to quickly and easily learn to use Rational Application Developer". Beginners beware. I can't remember reading a textbook-like book that has as many errors as this one does. I'm only up to page 65 and I've found 23 errors or inconsistencies. And, eight of the 65 pages I did not read. How many errors are there in the next 539 pages. I question whether this book was "proofed". I am amazed and disappointed that the IBM Press published a book with this level of quality. My experience with this book so far makes me wonder whether I should purchase any more books from IBM Press in the future. I'd sure like to get my money back on this one.

1 out of 5 stars A waste of paper.......2006-04-27

There is next to nothing useful in this book. Consider purchasing it only if you have a medium weight door that needs holding ajar, and no other use for $50.
