Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description

Martin Simmonds’ father tells him, “Never trust a musician when he speaks about love.” The advice comes too late. Martin already loves Dovidl Rapoport, an eerily gifted Polish violin prodigy whose parents left him in the Simmonds’s care before they perished in the Holocaust. For a time the two boys are closer than brothers. But on the day he is to make his official debut, Dovidl disappears. Only 40 years later does Martin get his first clue about what happened to him.

In this ravishing novel of music and suspense, Norman Lebrecht unravels the strands of love, envy and exploitation that knot geniuses to their admirers. In doing so he also evokes the fragile bubble of Jewish life in prewar London; the fearful carnival of the Blitz, and the gray new world that emerged from its ashes. Bristling with ideas, lambent with feeling, The Song of Names is a masterful work of the imagination.

4 out of 5 stars A Musical Mystery.......2007-09-18

Martin is an old man, looking toward retirement. His adulthood has been pretty dull; he took over his father's classical music promotion business, married a stable woman, had kids, and survived day to day. It could have been different, though. The problem was Dovidl.

Dovidl walked into Martin's life when they were both nine years old. Martin was living in upper-class comfort with his parents in England. Despite his family's money, his life was unhappy. His parents saw him as a nuisance and he was teased at school and bored at home. Then Dovidl and his father showed up on the doorstep. Dovidl was a violin prodigy and his family lived in Poland. However, this was in the nineteen-forties, and things were getting dangerous in Poland, especially for Jews like Dovidl's family. Martin's father agreed to take in the boy while Dovidl's father returned to retrieve the rest of the family.

Dovidl's father never returns; the entire family is murdered in a concentration camp. Martin and Dovidl, far from the tragedy, grow up like the closest of brothers. Dovidl has the raw talent, but he insists that he needs Martin to help guide him through his life and put his genius gift to work. Martin blossoms in his friend's presence, and Dovidl approaches his twenty-first birthday and his professional debut.

On the eve of his debut, Dovidl disappears. Martin's dreams of greatness disappear with him. Forty years later, though, Martin still hasn't given up on finding his friend. He is convinced that Dovidl is not dead, and is simply in hiding somewhere. On one of his travels, he hears something in a violinist--something hauntingly familiar and unique. Could this boy know Dovidl? Could he lead Martin toward unlocking the mystery that has taunted him for decades?

I really liked the mystery behind this story, and the flashback to the boys' childhood together. I got a real feel for what it would have been like living in England in wartime. I liked the ways Dovidl and Martin depended on each other and the things that each one brought to the relationship. I didn't particularly like Martin's character on its own, though. He was an unpleasant and petty child, who grew into a petty adult. He blamed Dovidl for all of his problems, instead of taking control of his own life. Spend forty years chasing after revenge just isn't an appealing character trait.

1 out of 5 stars instantly forgotten.......2006-03-14

Lebrecht is a second-rate journalist in the UK whose debut miraculously won the Whitbread First Novel Award back in 2002. Since then the book has been more or less forgotten. It appears on no 'Best Of' lists, sells only moderately now and is about as far removed from a word-of-mouth success as it is possible to get.

Four years on and no sign of a follow up. Rumour has it that a second novel was written but that his publisher didn't think it was up to much so passed on the chance to publish it. With a bit of luck it won't turn up anywhere else.

Life is too short to read books of this mediocrity. Do yourselves a favour and read something else instead.

5 out of 5 stars Love and Music.......2005-11-13

I picked this book from a shelf of trade paperbacks at one of my favorite local independent bookstores, solely because of the title. On the back cover the blurb says, "Martin Simmonds' father tells him, 'Never trust a musician when he speaks about love.' The advice came too late." I was sold. And I was not disappointed. In fact, it has been a while since I enjoyed a book this much.

Martin Simmonds is the son of a man who ran a music promotion company that catered to the middleclass. In 1940s England, that was unique and probably considered quite low-brow. But the man was a master of PR and with this skill would take young hopeful classical musicians and build them a career of minor fame.

Just before Hitler invaded Poland, David Rapoport, a nine year old violin prodigy, is left by his father in the care of the Simmonds. The father went back to Poland and David never saw him or the rest of his family again. David is many things to the Simmonds family. To the father, he is the great future star who will make the company well thought of. So David is groomed and coddled, brought to the best teachers, given an almost priceless vintage violin. But to nine year old Martin, David is a brother, a companion, an idol, but most of all someone to love in a fairly loveless family.

They grow up together and David makes Martin come alive, gives him a personality and Martin feels loved in return. The book open 40 years after David disappeared on the night of his world debut. Martin is now an old hypocondriac and a broken spirit. He has taken over the family business, which has devolved into a shoddy, outdated sheet music company. On a business trip to the English hinterlands, Martin hears a young violinist with a bit of David's signature technique in his playing. So begins the search for David and the reader learns the backstory.

It is a wonderful book, written in a smart modern tone but full of history. During the Battle of Britain, you feel you are there with two nine year old boys, doing the paper route and exploring the bomb sites. The world of a training musician, of the single-minded competitive attitude necessary, of the maneuvering by the manager/promoter is all created. And the inner life of a boy growing to manhood in a foreign country with no news of his Jewish family in wartorn Poland is portrayed with reality and sensitivity.

But it is not a mawkish or heartwarming tale. It is full of human folly and unlovely emotions. The moment when the meaning of the title is revealed is so heartstopping that I had to put the book down for a while and digest it all. There is also humor, musical and religious philosophy and a good dose of mystery.

THE SONG OF NAMES won a Whitbread First Novel Award. Say what you will about awards, because if it hadn't won, I may never have come across the book.

5 out of 5 stars Lyrical.......2005-07-26

I picked this book up on a whim, and it was the best book I've read in a long time. Thoroughly enjoyed the author's ability to write a novel like it was indeed a song. Friendship and betrayal of the most heartwrenching kind. History of London was also woven into the story, gently to ground the reader and remind them of the realities of WWII.

4 out of 5 stars A novel intertwining the world of music with pre-War london.......2004-07-04

Martin Simmonds, the President ad Owner of Simmonds Ltd. (a music publishing company), has been asked to judge a music festival in the small town of Tawburn. He hears nothing remarkable until one young player - a violinist - plays a certain rubato, one that reminds Martin of the young man who stayed with his family in London, pre-WWII. The young man was a virtuoso, showing great promise but disappeared from Martin's family and from the world mysteriously, on the day of his debut performance.

What follows in Norman Lebrecht's "The Song of Names," is a story of remembrance and devotion. With that one rubato, Martin travels back in time, to when his father took in the promising young violinist, Dovidl Rapoport, while his father returned to Warsaw to protect his family. He remembers all the devotion the two shared and the pain that was caused to him and his family upon Dovidl's disappearance. The grown-up Martin begis a search for Dovidl, forcing both of them to face up to their pasts.

The characters are very well-defined and believable. Plus, Lebrecht's descriptions of life in pre-War London from a child's perspective are quite remarkable. You really feel as though you are biking through the streets with the two young boys or watching the Germans warplanes flying over London. He also gives the reader insight into the different sects of the Jewish community in both the past and the present.

Overall, I found this book to be quite an enjoyable read and recommend it highly.

But when Master decides to sell Sally and her brother, the family escapes to seek shelter with a tribe of Seminoles who are rumored to adopt runaway slaves.

After a perilous journey, Sally and her family find the Indian village. While her father and brother easily adjust to Indian ways, Sally can't seem to find her place—the little songs she makes up don't fit with her new life. Will she ever let go of the past and fully join the tribe?

Reviewers praised Brenda Woods's Red Rose Box saying: "A timeless universal tale about a young girl's road to maturity. An impressive debut." (Kirkus Reviews.) Once again, Woods has written an evocative novel with an intriguing heroine.

5 out of 5 stars Bob is just so cool........2001-12-11

Bob must appreciate the illustrations in this book. My nieces and nephews do. We get a kick out of listening to the song on the CD and reading the text along with it. The drawings are appealing and only a bit bizarre. Gives the kids an antidote to Berenstain Bears.
Grown ups would like this books, too.

5 out of 5 stars My son's eyes pop out of his head every time he sees it!.......2000-03-24

My son is only a few months old, and he really responds to the vivid colors in this book. More than any other book we have, the pictures truly excite him. We strongly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Ah, I think I'll call it a must for the Bob Fan!.......2000-01-07

A first edition must for the Bob Dylan fan. Bob's classic is pieced together nicely by illustrator Scott Menchin. My three year old son, Tyler, enjoys the story line & pictures very much. He loves to follow along while Bob does his stuff. A new generation of Dylan fans are born.
