Forget about learning how to make love to a man. First you have to learn how to make a man fall in love with you.

1 out of 5 stars Heard it all before! .......2007-10-02

I would say, don't bother with this book. First of all it's jam packed, the print is tiny and its just an endless stream of sentences so you get bored and loose track and its just a pain! Then the information in the book is pretty useless It has a lot to do with old fashioned seduction techniques which men see through a mile away and has absolutely nothing to do with the magic ingredient that actually makes people fall in love with each other. I think to be honest if someone ever found out what that magic ingredient was they'd bottle it and be world famous by now! The truth is, you can seduce anyone into liking you or fancying you, but 'love', 'real love' I don't think so! Obsession and dependence perhaps... but do you really want that?

This is great book. Every woman should read it. You will be surprised how iformative this book is!
But you must read another new besteller which I highly recommend - "How to be a Super Hot Woman: 339 Tips to Make Every Man Fall in Love with You and Every Woman Envy You" by Mandy Simons

These two books are fascinating!

1 out of 5 stars Not what it claims--how to REALLY do it.......2006-12-31

As a person who loves the dating/relationship genre, let me assure you that there are MUCH better books out there. This book repackages the techniques usually recommended to salesmen--mirroring the other person in order to build rapport, and "speaking in their language." And that's exactly what you'll be doing--selling a falsified version of yourself in a marginally effective and pretty awkward way. (In spite of her exuberantly triumphant intro, Tracy Cabot is now divorced. I imagine it was hard to sustain this manufactured "bond" for very long.)

If you really want to learn about love languages, "The Five Love Languages" by Gary Chapman is much better. It will teach you how to truly interpret and sincerely relate to expressions of love between you and your boyfriend/girlfriend/partner. And if you want to make a man fall in love with you, "Why Men Love Bitches" by Sherry Argov is hands-down the best. It takes the also-fabulous prinicples behind "The Rules" (which have worked for me beautifully) and makes them practicable for the modern and/or professional woman. (I highly recommend The Rules--loosely interpreted--as well). You can read any of these books in 2-3 hours. I have read the latter two more times than I can count.

If after reading Why Men Love Bitches and The Rules, you haven't solved your dating problems, you probably need to read "He's Just Not That Into You"--which is not about dating as much as it is about recognizing the excuses women make for men when the truth isn't what we want. (Gems include "No, he's not too busy to call you. Calling you takes less time than going to the bathroom. If he's into you, calling you is the bright moment in his otherwise busy day.") This should definitely help build the correct mentality for expecting--and getting--both interest and great treatment from men.

And, finally, "What Southern Women Know About Flirting" has some tips and ideas that will help anyone, but particularly those inclined to play the "Damsel in Distress" card. This one's just the icing on the cake.

4 out of 5 stars Very different than most relationship advice books........2006-08-23

This book presents a unique approach to snagging guys. It teaches you how to use psychology to your advantage. The author argues that there are 3 types of men: visual, auditory, feelings. You speak to and treat each one differently. For example, when talking to a visual man, you say stuff like, "I SEE why you have that opinion". It makes them think that you really are on the same level and that you understand them. I can see why, from a logical point of view, that her advice and techniques would be successful. I was intrigued very much so by her "method" and have yet to try it for myself. To be honest, it wasn't what I expected. Sometimes, it got too wrapped up in psychology that it started to make relationships a little impersonal and mechanical. Well, at least she has her PH.D., so I guess her approach is accurate. I'd still recommend this, though, if you want a different read.

1 out of 5 stars Boring..........2007-10-05

This book was a waste of time and money. I was really disappointed because I picked it up at the recommendation of my favorite author, Julia Quinn, on her web site.

It was mediocre at best. I like characters that have a few flaws but are genuine. Simon was so flighty and superficial. Lace? Come on! I want a hero that spews masculinity and power, but with one weakness. He was weak in too many ways in my opinion.

Henrietta, for me, just wasn't likable at all. She was whiny when she didn't get her way, and it was always about how her "deformity" held her back. I prefer a heroine who defies her limitations and works for what she wants. I just didn't get it.

The story of Esme and Sebastian came out of nowhere! Admittedly, this is the first book I picked up from Ms. James (and the last), so I wasn't familar with the previous story involving Esme, but I felt it had no place in this book. It was so random and out of place. I felt like the author was just looking to fill some more pages because she was running out of story to tell.

Lastly, in reading this book, and knowing that Ms. James is a professor of Enlish literature, I felt that she tried to use too many big words that the average reader isn't going to understand. They were unnecessary and showed me that she was trying to impress the reader with her vocabulary.

If the constant mention of vomit, screeching children, and words like "odiferous" and "frowzled" appeal to you, then this is the book for you. If not, let me recommend some authors that I love:
Julia Quinn
Victoria Alexander
Suzanne Enoch
Samantha James
I have a pretty extensive collection of books from the aforementioned authors, and all have been re-read several times. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Very good read~.......2007-05-20

I liked this book, which ties so many things together. I thought Simon and Henrietta's story was a good romance, and I like reading about previous characters, such as Rees. Still, my favorite part is Esme and Sabastian. One can only hope they get together in the end. I wish I could give this 5 stars; in many ways it is a deserving book. However, when I compare it to other writers, it falls just! a bit short.

1 out of 5 stars snotty women, housebound men, and pro-life politics.......2005-11-14

There's so much wrong with this book that I don't know where to start. It's the third Eloisa James I've read, and it is also without doubt the last. She's lost me for good with Fool for Love.

- Darby is a thinly drawn hero. He looks like Johnny Depp and he likes lace and that's pretty much all that James has to say about him.

- Henrietta starts off charming but turns into a shrewish stick in the mud. Early in the book she's very understanding and mature, but once she gets it into her head that it's time to start impressing Simon's friends, or London in general, everything she says is catty catty catty. She became in the blink of an eye a truly despicable, moralizing faux-sophisticate. Especially all of the insulting comments she directs towards Darby's best friend, which James tries to pass off as "wit" but are anything but.

- Henrietta's devotion to the children overwhelms the romance. This, too, steers the novel in the direction of obnoxious moralizing. I should have guessed what was going on when Darby sees Henrietta covered in VOMIT and thinks about how the sticky liquid molds her dress to her figure and is really turned on. I know that romance novels are frequently unrealistic, but that made me feel queasy. By the end of the novel, Henrietta's major selling point as a heroine is her endless self-sacrifice for babies.

- The Esme subplot was similarly irritating. Esme is pregnant, she feels fat and ugly, and so the knight in shining armor rides in on his white horse...in order to assure her that pregnancy hasn't made her ugly and go gaga over the miracle of life.

I know that there is a whole sub-genre of Romance that is about men who just can't get enough of domestic pleasures, pie-baking and cozy nights by the fire and apparently vomit and pregnant women. However, that sub-genre is not Regency and I was really unhappy to find it sneaking in here.

I've come to the conclusion that James' schtick is to take these supposedly "free" or "scandalous" women and recoup them one by one into staid, rule-obeying, traditional and unremarkable mommies. She kills their fire and personality. I, for one, think it's truly awful.

4 out of 5 stars Evocative storytelling.......2005-09-02

When Simon Darby hears that his recently deceased uncle's widow is enceinte, he is convinced it is an elaborate ruse set up to keep him from inheriting. After all, the world knew that Lord Rawlings had a weak heart and that he and Esme, Lady Rawlings had not lived together as man and wife for years. Determined to secure the inheritance for his own recently orphaned baby sisters, Simon and his sisters head to Wiltshire to confront his scandalous aunt by marriage. On a stop at a coaching inn, the three meet the woman who will change their lives...Lady Henrietta Maclellan.

Henrietta is a woman filled with cravings. She longs for excitement and romance and positively aches to be a mother. Unfortunately, a lame hip has barred her from the life she craves. Her mother had had the same condition and died in childbirth, so Henrietta has been told all her life that motherhood is out of her reach. When she meets the elegant Simon and his darling sisters, Henrietta is instantly smitten, but knows nothing can come of it until she finds out from her friend, Esme, that Simon will be disinherited with the birth of the Rawlings heir.

As unbelievable as it sounds, the baby is his uncle's and Simon knows that he will have to marry an heiress if he is to secure his sisters' future. Romancing the beautiful Henrietta, Simon starts to believe his luck is changing for the better. But when her stepmother warns Simon off because of her medical condition, Henrietta and Esme are forced to resort to devious means to bring the recalcitrant would-be bridegroom up to scratch.

In FOOL FOR LOVE, Eloisa James revisits characters first introduced in DUCHESS IN LOVE. The bucolic charm of Wiltshire becomes a hotbed of intrigue and romance in this captivating tale. Richly detailed and delivered with a touch of whimsy, readers will instantly be drawn to each of the characters. In fact, several scenes between Simon and Henrietta are so tender and poignant that one may swallow a lump or two.

Note: While each of the stories in this series can stand alone, it is highly recommended that readers read DUCHESS IN LOVE first to get a better understanding of some of the ongoing story lines.

“Sam Shepard is phenomenal...the best practicing American playwright.” —The New Republic

“Sam Shepard is the most exciting presence in the movie world and one of the most gifted writers ever to work on the American stage.” —Marsha Norman

“The most ruthlessly experimental and uncompromising of today's young writers.” —John Lahr

“Sam Shepard fills the role of professional playwright as a good ballet dancer or acrobat fulfills his role in performance. That is, he always delivers, he executes feats of dexterity and technical difficulty that an untrained person could not, and makes them seem easy.” —Michael Feingold, The Village Voice

"One of the most original, prolific, and gifted dramatists at work today.” —The New Yorker

“Increasingly recognized as one of the more significant dramatists in the English-speaking world.” —Charles R. Bachman, Modern Drama

5 out of 5 stars best of Shepard Vol. II.......2007-05-25

This collection contains 8 of Pulitzer-prizewinning Sam Shepard's best plays. Shepard has a way of capturing our imagination with a wild collection of characters in even wilder stories. "Fool For Love", "Angel City", "Geography of a Horse Dreamer", "Action", "Cowboy Mouth", Seduced", "Suicide in B", "Melodrama Play".
Shepard is one of the great American voices in theatre. These are all classics that deserve to be remembered and studied.

5 out of 5 stars These plays range from the surreal to the all too real..........1998-07-07

With this collection, Shepard demonstrates his remarkable ability to portray America in the realistic ways most contemporary authors/playwrights/poets are afraid to do. The dialogue is captivating and moving, and the action is fast-paced. Definetely an excellent buy.

4 out of 5 stars Illusion and Reality.......2002-05-15

In Fool for Love , Sam Shepard analyzes the complicated relationship between May and Eddie who are involved in a love-hate, fascination-repulsion 15-year-long relation which is once more in the `on again' phase.
Set in a low-budget motel room on the edge of the Mojave Desert, May and Eddie play out an unpredictable encounter. Traveling close to 2,500 miles to come back into her life, Eddie attempts to once again declare his faithfulness and commitment to the unconvinced May, who tells him: "You gotta give this up. You've been jerking me off like this for fifteen years. Fifteen years, I've been a yo-yo for you". May screams for Eddie to leave yet pleads for him to stay upon his repeated exits. Through their arguing, the chemistry and history the two have shared becomes apparent and it is obvious that the characters are deeply in love. "We've got a pact...we've made a pact", Eddie said to May. "You know we're connected, May. We will always be connected...that was decided a long time ago", he added.
A bottle of tequila blends the couple's arguing into the narration of a story that deepens on May and Eddie's past revealing how the two were already completely in love when the truth was learned about their true relationship. At this point of the play, Shepard had gotten illusion and reality finely combined that it takes a while to understand that the Old Man observing, and occasionally interacting with the characters, is just their distant father's ghost.
Shepard has done an amazing job in this play managing illusory conversations naturally flow within the real ones. May and Eddie seem to have both independent and joined conversations with the Old Man.
A fourth character, Martin comes into the story, as the shy, naive date of May to reminds us that the conversation between the protagonists is "real". As Eddie, now drunk, continues his story of how he came to know May, the old man yells for him to stop the story, but ends up discovering facts of his own past as well -- which confused me since his presence is not real but illusory only.
The fact that at the end of the play, the motel gets burned down by Eddie's mistress, -- as May refers to her -- May is forced to move away again, suggesting us that the vicious cycle in which the characters live, will be repeated once again following what Eddie once told May: "You'll never get rid of me. I'll track you down no matter where you go".

5 out of 5 stars Fool For Love.......2000-01-08

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting to get different results. We learn of Eddie, Mae, their father, and a "Man" (Martin) coming for a date blind to the status of the relationship of his date and her brother and their father. I am a Senior at Lindenwood University in St. Charles Missouri, double majoring in Theatre and Mass Communications. This April, I will be directing "Fool For Love" as my senior project. This play, as analyzed in a previous modern drama class and in my current working analysis, is highly identifiable with anyone who has ever been involved in a severely dysfunctional relationship that won't go away. Mr. Shepard creates four intricate and powerful characters sharing both realistic and ethereal existances.

      4 out of 5 stars Fun Multi-layered anthology.......2005-08-25

3 of my favorite romance writers bring this charming collection to life- all focused on April Fools Day so be prepared to chuckle!

Vicki Lewis Thompson's April Fools offering sparkles with humor and some really fun quirks- her handsome salesman leading man is named Andre--- and every woman thinks he is sooooo French and debonaire...right! He does have moves- but the name is from the cheap champagne his folks drank at his conception....Great humor, tension and sexy sexy interplay and steam with heroine and hero. She asks him out- then finds out she will be his boss on Monday---- how they resolve the issue of office romance is done with intelligence .

Stephanie Bond also shares a story of office romance- again our heroine is put in charge of sales and her top salesman is her one regret- a one night stand from her past that she can't forget. They go on a road trip to cement their working relationship and he plans a humdinger of an April Fools stunt for her- only it backfires--- the whole trip backfires. Fires heat up between them and he realizes he has grossly underestimated this woman he planned to sink. Seeing her really stand up to him on the business side was great- smart woman working even smarter---- yet she totally respects his talents. Again their story is handled well - solid passion and tension- humor--- fun!

Third April Fools day offering by Judith Arnold is a subtle tale- two strangers hear they are engaged on the radio! They meet and try to deal with the fallout and both find that what started as a joke has serious potential. Set in Boston this one is a little more subdued but again has strong characters, nice conflict and some humor as well as a solid dose of warmth and affection.

Bottom Line- a keeper! And I want to read about the two friends mentioned in the VLT story! ( would not be surprised if they show up on e-harlequin.com to be printed with this one as a book on their own at some date- a very Harlequin thing to do)

3 out of 5 stars This time forever..........2004-10-09

After an unbelievable night of passion, Kelly Robbins is left heartbroken and confused when her high school sweetheart Ashton Hunter disappears without a trace. It has been years since she has heard from him, but one day, out of the blue, Ashton calls Kelly and requests her help planning a party for her best friend. She agrees, but is determined to keep her distance from Ashton.

When the couple see each other again, sparks immediately begin to fly. Even though they desperately try to fight the attraction, the physical desire is too strong, causing them to ultimately succumb to their needs. Will Kelly and Ashton realize that passion is not enough to build a relationship on? Will they be able to get past the hurt and insecurities that previously plagued their relationship?

FOOL FOR LOVE was a quick, enjoyable read, although it lacked the usual fire that made Perrin's previous novels a hit with me. The romance and the love scences, which are the basis for a great romance novel, were decidely lacking in this novel. I'm sure Perrin has other wonderful works in store, and I look forward to seeing what she comes up with next.

4 out of 5 stars Fool for Love.......2004-08-23

I thought that this book was sweet and entertaining. The perfect novel to snuggle up with on a cold winter day in front of a fire.
Although I felt the same as many reviewers did about the story line stretching out a little, I thought Kelly and Ashton were so perfect for each other. I felt the chemistry and energy between them. Ms. Perrin made Ashton sound like the perfect guy; sweet, talented, funny and oh so sexy. There were many times where I got a little annoyed at Kelly when she would keep putting up a barrier. I just kept yelling out loud, "you know you want him!!!!!", LOL! When they finally did get it together it was ELECTRIC.
FOOL FOR LOVE is a great read. I totally recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Giving an old flame a second chance.......2004-04-02

Who hasn't wondered whether a past love might have survived, if only circumstances had been a little different? Here's the book that makes the fantasy a reality. Kayla Perrin has a fluid writing style that completely engages the heart and mind of her reader. Always one of my favorite authors to read.

      Book Description

The delirious pursuit of love is a search that inevitably takes us all both down the well-beaten path and into new, uncharted territory. In this collection of thirty-three heart-tugging and hilarious essays, celebrated Electronic Urban Report columnist Steven Ivory chronicles his lifelong quest for that thing we all crave: The Meaningful Relationship.

The journey begins with his first love -- his mother -- before making an amusing pilgrimage through lust-filled adolescent affections, an awkward introduction to sex, and a series of poignant and funny adventures of unrequited love, bungled blind dates, and the Ones That Got Away.

Propelled by a wit rivaled only by a willingness to bare his soul, Ivory's revelations on kissing, game-playing, sexual satisfaction, and personal insecurities culminate in a startling, life-altering discovery that touches your funny bone as well as your heart.

      5 out of 5 stars Outrageous!.......2006-03-06

I love this book! If you're a fool in love and searching for Mr/Mrs Right, this book will do it for you. Read it, I'll betcha you enjoy it! It's funny, witty and romantic and it will give you some interesting ideals for your next date!

      4 out of 5 stars Funny & Nostalgic.......2006-02-17

I didn't want to put this book down! I appreciate the nostalgia found in Mr. Ivory's descriptive childhood stories. Each about his mother and friends were particularly endearing.
I expected his adult romantic recollections to be graphic, but was pleased that he was able to convey his memories without the use of totally explicit language. At times, however, I needed to skim a paragraph to avoid feeling uncomfortable. I recommend this book for it's humor and good-natured stories, but would discourage anyone offended by occasional explicit language.

      4 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2005-09-21

Admittedly I'm a Steven Ivory fan. I've read his column in Electronic Urban Report from the beginning. This book exceeded even my expectations and leaves me looking forward to the next one......

      5 out of 5 stars Soul Food!.......2004-09-08

Steven Ivory took me on a journey that satisfied my hunger for intellect and served me humor for dessert! What a joy to read such an honest and poignant work on love and relationships from the male point of view. A secret window through which to gaze upon the masculine spirit, Ivory offers a rare treasure for a women everywhere; as well as a "What, you too?!" for the men. Write on my brother, write on.

      5 out of 5 stars What a Birthday Gift!.......2004-07-15

My husband gave me this thing for my birthday and I have to say it is one of the best gifts he ever gave me. I have always been a Steve Ivory fan. I read his weekly column every week on the EUR website. However, recently, I had a bad experience with laser eye surgery and I haven't been able to see clearly let alone read for the past four months. My doctor gave me the okay to read again after my last visit and Mr. Ivory's Fool in Love was just what a girl needed to welcome sight back in her life. I love this book, it is so funny, and every story is about him, something he should write about more in his weekly column.

4 out of 5 stars A tale of three fools-or maybe none at all.......2007-09-09

"The Fool's Tale" is at its heart a character study of three very selfish people, who, each in their own way, are demanding complete loyalty from the other two. There are those who would argue this point with me, saying the fool in question is more selfless than anything, but I believe in reading the book it is obvious that each character covets an essential piece of the others, with disastrous results. So maybe they're all fools.

The Plot: Nobel is the king of a small welsh kingdom right around the time that Llewellyn the great (the first official prince of Wales-welsh not English) was uniting the country (the 1190's.) Nobel came into his kingship when his father was murdered after being given a writ of safe passage by the English king, which was disregarded by the Mortimers, a clan of marcher barons. His best friend Gwirion is the only other survivor of the massacre, and saves Nobel's life by refusing, under torture, to give away his friends location.

Fast forward twenty years. Nobel is marrying a niece of the Mortimer clan, Isabel. She has high romantic hopes for the marriage, Nobel has high political hopes, and Gwirion, who by this time has become the equivalent to a "King's Fool" sees it as an impediment to his friendship with the King.

But war, hostage takers, and destiny change things. Nobel is reveled as a tyrant, Isabel as a beloved queen to an alien nation, and Gwirion as a man, not just a fool. But bear in mind what I said-everyone in this increasingly complicated equation wants something from the others they are not capable of giving up-until it may be too late.

"The Fool's Tale" is one hell of a novel. I was surprised by a lot of things in it (not the romance-that was predictable) but the endings, and the passions the people displayed for each other were astounding portrayed and very real. I do have to say that I could never get a very clear historical image of any of the settings in the book, which impeded my reading pleasure, but other than that the novel was well written and very surprising. In a good way. This is clearly an author to watch.

And there is an astounding sense of poetic justice to the meaning of Gwirion's name. For what is a true fool but one who speaks the truth when it is better to stay silent?

      Four stars.

      5 out of 5 stars Highly entertaining.......2007-06-25

This book was actually one of the most exciting books I have read in a long time. It changes dramatically halfway through, and thank goodness I knew nothing of what was coming when I read it. (Do not read the Publisher's Weekly review if you can help it, it spoils the whole book in the first sentence.) It was well written, but I wouldn't really call it a historical novel, as other reviewers have pointed out. The history was sewn into the story, and it was secondary.

This book was so stimulating that I really could care less if about the minor flaws. It FUN to read. I cared about the characters. I was anxious, excited, annoyed, every feeling you can think of. It was damn entertaining. The stupid thing was in my car, and I found myself reading it at stoplights. Oh yes, I really did.

I recommend this book, great entertainment. Just enjoy the story and hang on. Try not to be a stickler for historical fact and enjoy the story.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining, fun to read, but hardly credible.......2007-05-22

Galland is an awesome writer with a gift for storytelling. I enjoyed A Fool's Tale immensely despite the fact that it's not a credible story. It's entertaining and a hard book to put down. But it's not historically accurate. In fact, it's a bit bizarre.

In the afterword, Galland admits that the story is more about the 3 main characters than the history of the times and place. In fact, the liberties she takes with the history makes it seem as if she forced the story into the setting.

Nonetheless, if you like stories that focus on the development of the characters; or if you like a well-developed romantic tale, then you'll probably like A Fool's Tale. On the other hand, if you want to learn something about the history, read Sharon Kay Penman - particularly, the Welsh trilogy beginning with Here Be Dragons.

Galland's characters are quite imaginative. In fact, they would make an intriguing psychological case study. I would have preferred an equally imaginitive setting. But this hardly detracts from the entertainment the book provides.

      5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2007-05-09

A far cry from the norm in historical novels, Ms. Galland kept me nailed to my chair with astounding twists and turns and surprises. A must read!

      4 out of 5 stars Hmmm.......2007-03-05

You know, I came across it looking for Welsh based history novels. Its no Sharon Kay Penman, but its not a bad book. At the flip of the same coin its not fantastic either. Its a good story, characters were strong and more 3 demensional in the beginning, and as a whole it was creative and well executed, but it was so hollow and improbable, especially toward the end, that you just cant grasp onto it. Everyone you get to know and really like in the beginning turns into an asshead 5/8 of the way through. So it was dissapointing on a few notes. But, I would recommond it. Everybody has different likes. Other people seem to adore it. 3.469 Stars,.. haha, now Im an asshead.
