Illus. in full color. "In Seuss's familiar rhymed couplets and illustrations, the Cat in the Hat shows Young Cat some wonderful stuff about reading with both eyes open."--School Library Journal.
Customer Reviews:
Encouraging reading.......2007-07-16
A great book for early readers, Seuss explores concepts of reading and the value of reading with the usual sillyness that is throughout his books.
I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!.......2006-11-20
The thing I like about the book is that it encourages parent/child reading and conversation, and encourages the child to use his/her imagination. "Reading with eyes shut;" my child attempted it and then began to ask a million questions: How does the Cat in the Hat read anything with his eyes shut? Why can't i see the words with my eyes shut? Can YOU read with your eyes shut?
One of the lesser Dr. Seuss books.......2006-04-17
I'm a huge Dr. Seuss fan -- he taught me to read -- but this is, in all honesty, not one of his better books. The message is great (reading, yay!) but the delivery is weak. The artwork and the text are both a bit flat, and he seems to be straining to emulate the vibrant wackiness of his earlier work. There's nothing "wrong" with this book, but you may find yourself reading it, wondering why it just isn't as fun as it ought to be. It's okay, but there are better books out there, including a LOT of great ones he's written.
Against the go to sleep club.......2005-07-30
I'm way too old for beginner books but I read "I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!" anyway. It's good for young readers, but against the go to sleep club. It focuses on "Keep your eyes open so you can READ!" soooo much that it fights going to sleep. And what sense does "Reading with my eyes shut is bad for my hat and makes my eyebrows red hot!" make? They should say it's bad for your eyes but no, they say it's bad for your eyebrows and hat. And it would be terrible for Russian Blue Witch because she LOVES books toooooo much to pay attention to the world around her and help people. It would be better teaching going to sleep because I never let my sisters sleep, chattering stories all night. Signed, StoryMaker. "Gotta trust the kid's review!"
Pretty cute book.......2005-05-03
This book is probably good if you have a young reader wanting to read a simple book. But if you're reading it to a child before bedtime, it doesn't really tell much of a story. I know that sounds weird, but it just kinda gets annoying after awhile to some children and it doesn't really spark too much imagination. Yes, it does create conversation about why the cat goes through trying to read with his eyes shut, but really, it just isn't all that much fun for a child to read. I'd try something else first like Go Dog Go, or just check this one out of the library first before buying it. You may like it but my family didn't. It just was boring to them. They couldn't wait until I put it down and picked up another book!

Not my cup of tea.......2007-06-11
This is a well written book, a page-turner; I like the details of Elaine's past and am interested in what viewpoints formed her as a person. However, I also think it is quite depressing. I read it a couple of times, years ago. When I saw a positive review on it I read it again, and each reading makes it more depressing. Her outlook is bleak, and I really don't see anything positive or uplifting about it.
atwood = one of the greatest writers of our time.......2007-06-06
Simply put, I worship this book.
Cat's Eye follows the controversial painter Elaine as she reflects upon her childhood and younger years when she returns to Toronto (the city of her youth) for a retrospective of her works. Her reflections stir up memories of friendship, longing, betrayal, love, hate, and pain. Especially haunting are her memories of Cordelia, a childhood friend with whom she had a complex relationship. It is a truly brilliant story, so completely well-written and beautiful that I just wanted to read certain sentences over and over again. Her story also rouses intense emotions in the reader, as we can all unearth memories of childhood friendships gone awry, awkward teenage years, and failed love.
Elaine finds she needs to mourn her past in order to get through the present. Her past is so achingly realistic and personal, that you can't help but empathize and contemplate your own personal grief. That's not to say the book is fully depressing; instead, I would say that it is haunting. There are certain things to which I can relate at this exact moment in my life, which may have caused the book to have a bigger impact on me than it might for others. Regardless, I think this is another brilliant masterpiece by Atwood and would recommend it to both Atwood fans, and those new to her writing.
A comfortable glimpse .......2007-02-11
I enjoyed this novel. It's a "good read." Reading about "mean girls" that hover around young girls rang true. I remember my two best friends deciding to ignore me one day on a field trip for no apparent reason. They wouldn't talk or seat next to me. Elaine's experiences are much more severe but her state of mind at the time seemed familiar.
Don't expect the great North American novel, but do expect a really personal glimpse into the main character's formative life.
Dull....drags on a bit. Not tied together well........2006-12-28
This is a story of a woman growing up. The childhood friends that you have, the choices you make/the consequences, and how the past can haunt you. I have read two other books by Margaret Atwood and I liked this one the least. (Oryx and Crake, The Edible Woman) I feel the book was too long for the material covered. Also, the book talked about the children too much and the last half of the book has little to do with the first half. I wouldn't recommend. I also have a friend who read the book who had a different view of what the story was about (feminity/coming of age as a woman in a different time), but she also found the story to be lackluster.
Inmense work of art and craftmanship condensed to the maximum.......2006-12-28
Despite the casual and unassuming tone of the story, this book has been crafted to the smallest detail. Nothing here is said without a reason. Words are elegantly economized so that what goes unsaid is as important and as clearly felt as the written parts. This creates a sense of subjectivity very befitting, since the narrator is rendered real by the unreliability of her memories and the limitations of her necessarily incomplete knowledge of her own past.
No wonder many readers, unable to grasp the many levels on which this book can be read, found it dull. Interesting that even then, many of them acknowledge the authenticity of the narrator's voice, like the one who qualifies it as "Paragraph upon paragraph upon paragraph of childhood angst" Well, isn't this precisely the point?
I found particularly appealing the underlying thesis that the bullying and the bullied mingle with each other by a constant swapping of their roles, among each other and in their relations with third people. Also the distortions of the memory involuntarily introduced by the mind as a means of survival.
Incidentally, I found it very instructive on certain episodes of my life, which were half buried in the rapidly decaying pile of my memory.

Death inside a "Painted Lady".......2002-06-10
Private eye, Sharon McCone, receives a frantic phone call from a friend, Jake Kaufmann, who paints houses in the Painted Lady district of San Francisco. When she reaches the Victorian house where Jake asks her to meet him, she finds him dead. During her investigation she discovers that there are many special interest groups in the area who might have a motive for murder. There are purists who want the homes restored to their original look and there are those who want to fix them up to sell them by painting them the gaudy colors which became popular in the 60's. Sharon (and the reader) find out about the different kinds of Victorian houses which became popular in San Francisco and also some of the furnishings which go well in the houses. Against this background McCone finally figures out who in the community committed Jake's murders and some others. This is a good mystery from the reliable Marcia Muller.
Enjoyed the Painted Ladies but not the plot.......2000-11-14
Ah, the San Francisco of the postcard. Alamo Square with Victorian Row houses with downtown in the background. Muller's third Sharon McCone novel has a terrific sense of place and taught me many new things about the Victorian scene in San Francisco.
Still, the pacing seems a bit bogged down. The side characters, often a highlight in Muller's books, aren't very interesting or sympathetic. Who cares if one of them is killed -- just don't wreck the Tiffany Lamp.
A good read if you love the atmosphere of "romantic San Francisco" but otherwise so-so.
Another good outing for McCone.......2000-06-25
"The Cheshire Cat's Eye" is the third book in the Sharon McCone series by Marcia Muller. McCone finds her friend Jake Kaufmann dead in a San Francisco Victorian house that he is restoring by painting it with gaudy colors. The architectural communty is very opposed to these psychedelic houses. There are several suspects, and McCone is one of them. She must investigate, not only to clear her name, but find Jake's killer. Sharon McCone is by far my favorite female PI in detective fiction. Muller's characters are well-drawn, and her books are a pleasure to read. This novel is not as complex as some of her later works, but this is an excellent place to start. If you haven't yet met Sharon McCone, you will be in for a big treat.
Not as good as other McCone mysteries.......1999-08-19
I've read about 5 of Muller's books featuring Sharon McCone. This wasn't one of my favorites.
A thrilling quick read!.......1999-02-11
Yet another great job by Muller. This time, she takes us into the world of San Francisco's famous "painted ladies." Ever wonder what secrets those grand old houses kept? The lives, the loves (and of course, the deaths) of one family are told in fantastic detail and originality. As Sharon is closing in on the killer, she sets an simple yet effective trap, and the pages turn quickly! Even if you've never been to SF, Muller's writing style will still place you right at the scene of the crime!

Great fun in the car!.......2007-10-07
My son is just turning 3 and LOVES to listen to Geronimo in the car. The chapters are just the right length for short trips to the supermarket or post office. He quotes the narrator and loves the sound effects. It is entertaining for me too. Trust me, I've heard these 3 stories again and again. I got introduced to the series from a free CD of Curse of the Cheese Pyramid in the kid's meal at Wendy's. (I wish more fast food places would try this as a prize instead of plastic junk--it really gets the kids interested in reading.) He loved it and I've bought the first 2 sets in the series. If it's great for a 3 year old, it would be even better for kindergarten - 3rd graders too. I highly recommend it.
Geronimo Rocks.......2007-06-13
The Geronimo series books and audio books are all great. The audio books are well-done and do a lovely job of bringing stories to life. I definitely recommend listening to Sitlton for a long car/plane ride rather than the brain-numbing GameBoy. And my husband and I even enjoy listening in and will play the CD in the car rather than letting our kids listen privately on their Ipods. I also find these audio books to be a great price. If you're not familiar with the actual books, give them a try, too. The puns captivate your older reader who may techinically be older than the suggested reading level, and the fun colored fonts will encourage younger readers to push themselves. I am a big believer in reading books both below, at, and above reading levels (to gain confidence, push yourself, reinforce, and enjoy), so the Geronimo books are wonderful to appeal to those from ages 6 to 10 minimum.
A Book Review From a Spiritridge Third Grader.......2007-03-22
Do you want to read an exciting hilarious book? Well then The Curse of the Cheese Pyramid is waiting for you! Geronimo is a great newspaper editor. He has to go to Egypt because a scientist, Albert Spitfur, has a new way to make electricity! Geronimo went to Egypt because he needs to report the new way to make electricity. Geronimo's great grandfather is on a money diet (he is not spending a lot of money). Weird things happen, you will have to read the book! Oh, did I say they talk about cheese a lot in this book? Well they do!
I like how great grandfather William always calls Geronimo and screams at him, "You're spending too much money", when he really is not!
I recommend this book to people who like talking animals, Egypt and lot's of cheese! So read it!
Outstanding.......2005-10-16
My 9 Year old daughter was having some trouble with her reading and the entire Stilton series has reversed that. The books are very well written for young readers and the stories are even fun for the parent to read as well. Overall this is a fun series with alot of good humor and will make you child enjoy their reading experience

Our furry feline friend has dipped his paws into the muddy waters of murder once again--only this time, nothing is as it seems.Temple Barr, a redheaded public relations expert and Louie's human partner, won't be trick-or-treating this Halloween Eve: Her landlady, the eccentric Electra, is dragging her to a seance intended to resurrect the spirit of Harry Houdini. Midnight Louie scoffs, but when the seance ends abruptly with the murder of a famous psychic, his well-trained nose smells something fishy, and it's not his dinner. When Temple discovers that the dead man was a debunker of false psychic phenomena, making any other supposed psychic in the room a prime suspect, she knows there's more to this case than meets the eye.

Seances, ghosts and murder, oh my!.......1999-03-29
Cat With an Emerald Eye sees that irresistable inter-species team of Temple Barr and Midnight Louie, PI up to their respective heels and paws in the occult when a psychic is murdered at a seance held to contact the ghost of Harry Houdini. When it turns out that the victim was really a magician attempting to expose phony psychics, this dynamic pair is off searching for the killer. Temple must turn to one of her beaux, the Mystifying Max Kinsella, a friend of the victim while juggling her feelings for Matt Devine, the handsome ex-priest and martial arts practitioner. Louie, on the other hand, must reluctantly rely on Karma, the mystical Birman who lives with Temle's landlady, Electra Lark. While Temple and Max search for the killer in the victim's own files, Matt sees a ghost from his past-the once and future Cliff Effinger. Meanwhile, Louie's life is complicated, not only by murder but by his relationship with his daughter, Midnight Louise, his own father, Three O'Clock Louie and the revelation that his now has his own neamisis, a dude who threatens his very future. Once again, the reader is taken on a roller coaster ride in this, the sixth book in the Midnight Louie series and left wanting more, more mysteries and more of the characters Douglas so skillfully creates.
The mystery is actually stronger than the Midnight Louie.......1998-10-15
An offbeat entry to the series - the various mysteries are more engrossing than the feline hero for once. The reader gets to hear Max's side of the story (one of 2 men PR-person and sometime-sleuth Temple Barr is attracted to) while getting caught up in a mystery involving a haunted house and a seance. There's also a fascinating sidebar with Temple's other fellow, Matt, and his glimpse of an-all-too-real ghost from his past. The overall atmosphere of the book is rather haunting and melancholy, marred only by Louie's slightly ridiculous take on things. I'm fond of the feline, but kitty seanaces? A little too over the top for me....
San Francisco Chronicle Book Review, 12/15/96.......1997-07-23
Midnight Louie is known as a big, bad, streetwise kind of guy, but in his latst antic adventure, the beguiling cat-about-town shows his sensitive side. In "Cat with an Emerald Eye" both feline super sleuth Louie and his human companion, Las Vegas public relations woman Temple Barr, find themselves communing with the occult, and Louie, needless to say, proves to be the more adept. "I am beginning to think that I am as superior at seeing what is not there as I used to be at seeing what was there," the super sleuth meows.
There is indeed a murder involved...but you get the feeling that the murder is almost incidental in Carole Nelson Douglas' mysteries. The real mystery is which of her two beaux will win Temple-Mystifying Max the magician, who is "like a volcano, unpredictable and exciting," or the ex-priest, Matt Devine,"who made her feel so utterly secure it was...divine. Max was caffeine, Matt was...chamomile tea. Max was edgy nerves, Matt was nirvana."
The two men are linked not only by their love for Temple but also by two dead bodies, a connection that is played out slowly, book by book. In this one, Matt believes he glimpses one erst-while corpse, his wicked stepfather, making his way through Las Vegas. But the advantage, nevertheless, belongs to Max, for whom the dead magician/medium was a mentor.
Though Max "needed to keep secrets about himself the way some other peole bled personal data like information-age hemophiliacs," he does, at last, give Temple some insight into his teenage summer in Ireland, when all his troubles started and he got into hot water with the IRA and involved with Interpol.
But the motely crew of psychic suspects, Temple's tempestuous love life (not to mention her world-class shoe collection) and Max and Matt's past and present problems are just part of the fun.
It's hard not to be charmed by Temple's eccentric landlady and her astral-projecting cat Karma ("the little piece of pussycat pixiedom" Louie calls Klinkerball). Louie's semi-retired father, Three O'Clock Louie, also makes an appearance, as do shades of Elvis, Amelia Earhart, Orson Wells and the late, great Harry Houdini. You never know what madness and mayhem you'll find in Douglas' mysteries, but you can be sure it will be wild, witty and utterly irresistible.--reviewed by Alix Madrigal
I love Midnight Louie, but..........1997-03-23
I have read all of Ms Douglas' Midnight Louie books to date and thoroughly enjoy them. There are two different points of view in the chapters of her books. Some are from the point of view of our heroine Miss Temple Barr, a Vegas PR agent, and some are written from the point of view of her very streetwise cat Midnight Louie. I really enjoy reading his chapters and their uniquely slanted opinions of all things cat and human. Somehow Miss Barr and Louie always find themselves in the middle of a murder mystery. And of course, Emerald Eye is no exception. As much as I love this series, however, I must rank this particular volume a bit low as the whole concept seemed a bit bizarre to me. Seances in general don't do much for me, and a seance held with the idea of raising the spirit of Harry Houdini - too much. All the spiritual and new age frou-frou were things I could happily do without. Also there is a back-of-the-story tale going on with Temple and her two loves Matt and Max which I am enjoying following. This volume made little progress with that story line and I missed it. If this is your first Midnight Louie book, don't judge the whole series on the basis of this one. Check out some of the earlier volumes, or better yet, start with the first and read them all

In one of those odd, unplanned moments of fate, David Raber paid a couple of thousand dollars to liberate a depressed and frightened cougar cub from a pet-shop cage. He took Cougar, the eponymous big cat, home, introduced him to the more compact cats that already lived with him, and watched as the household adjusted, bit by bit, to the unlikely newcomer. Everyone eventually did. So, too, did the neighborhood dogs, and most of the neighbors--though a few, Raber writes grumpily, behaved in less than friendly ways when Cougar went out for a stroll or kept vigil in the bushes. All the while, Raber observed his new housemate's behavior, learning how to interpret Cougar's growls and purrs, and how to give Cougar the freedom to act naturally in an unnatural setting.
Bringing Cougar into his home, Raber writes, "would refocus my priorities and change what I had considered important." He recounts that transformation and his changing view of wildlife and the environment, as well as the accidental fame that befell Cougar as the residents of one crowded Florida town after another came to appreciate his company. A kind of modern rejoinder to Joy Adamson's Born Free, Raber's memoir of his sentimental education in the ways of Felis concolor will interest animal enthusiasts of all kinds. --Gregory McNamee
Book Description
David Raber first saw Cougar when he was an eight-week-old kitten locked up in a toaster-sized cage, being put on display and poked and prodded by the crowd.Raber took him out, held him, and just couldn't put him back.He made four promises that day: one, no more petting, out of respect for Cougar; two, no more cages; three, he would educate people against exotic animal ownership, and four, he would make Cougar happy, and this has become a 24-hour-a-day learning process and a duty that he adores.Being the only large cat in the country who is federally licensed without a cage, Cougar strides down streets, roams hotel lobbies, enters speedboat competitions, and even films a Puma Sportswear ad with several Olympic gold medalists.Together, Raber and Cougar are a team, and in this book, Raber recounts their many adventures together - he teaches Cougar about elevators, switches, and doors while saving him from bullets and speeding cars; and Cougar teaches him about deer, oppossum, and squirrels while rescuing him from alligators and raging rivers. In helping each other, they share their weaknesses and become strong. As the official poster model for the IAMS company, Cougar has been seen by millions.Beautiful and touching, entertaining and provocative, Through Cougar's Eyes is a love story that dispels the prevalent and presumptuous thinking that mankind and wildlife can't get along and depicts sacrifice and dedication with a message: relating to animals will set you both free.AUTHORBIO: DAVID RABER graduated from DePauw University with a pre-med degree and went on to become a distinguished Naval graduate. His previous occupations include Naval aviator and the owner of an aircraft management charter business. He is currently employed as the loyal servant and devoted friend to his companion, Cougar.

For lovers of wild cats.......2002-07-15
David Raber tells a unique story -- one which many animal lovers might wish to relive. His accounts of life with this amazing cougar are worth the read. But an animal expert he is not. He may know volumes about raising a cougar in his home, but he called an opossum a rodent. Other misstatements were less obvious but inexcusable. Still, the story was fun.
One Amazing Animal.......2001-12-07
Ever since I was a young kid I wanted to own a big cat. I have lived with a house cat ever since I was born, 21 yrs. It doesn't need to be said how happy I was to find a book detailing big cat ownership. How interesting is this book? Well, I read all 200+ pages in 2 days. While not the most professionally written, it is packed with tales of Cougar that at times seem almost to amazing to be true. When finished, I didn't want it to be. I want to hear more about Cougar's adventures. Although David is against big cat ownership, I think this book also shows possibilities with the right committment. I hope to someday meet Cougar and David to share in the joy that this great cat brings wherever he takes David. My best to Dave and Cougar
If you love your cat, you will love the stories about Cougar.......2001-05-19
I suppose it is every cat lovers dream to "own" a big cat like a cougar. But most people never get that chance, and if they did would quickly realize what an all consuming job it is to care for a tamed wild cat - time, money, emotion, legalities, not to mention the fact that you want to do the best for the animal. Well the author of "Through Cougar's Eyes" knows exactly what it is like to live with a big cat. And although he never in his wildest dreams ever even considered adopting a cougar he tells in touching detail how they came to be together for life.
I love cats and I love hearing cat stories. This is a humdinger of a cat story that chronicles the adventures of a man, his wife and a very large cat. It is simply amazing what David and Linda Raber were and are still willing to do to care for this beautiful animal. Are their efforts worth the sacrifices they have made? You bet they are. This animal lives a wonderful life because he is so loved and in return the Rabers have received so much joy.
I just love this story. If you love cats or if you love animals you are going to love this book and besides since Cougar is the national spokes-cat for Iams cat food you can actually meet him and his human family in person as they travel the country together, which I highly recommend it is such a treat, just like this book.

This insightful, informative, and truthful book (written from a dog's point of view) lists all the magnificent things that Dogs are and that cats (ugh!) are not, including actual case histories and commentaries that prove once and for all that Dogs are...infinitely better friends, companions, and ethical beings than are cats!

Wit for the New Dog Owner.......2005-01-12
Mr. Lovka has assembled funny, witty, and astute comparisons of dogs and cats. If you're just starting to work with a dog, and are going through obedience issues that come along with the package, this book is just right for when you need to step back a little. Dogs are vey loving and loyal, but of course they have needs, too.
As the author says: dogs are in it for the fun, cats are in it for the money.
That about sums it up.
Enjoy,
Gus

Truly Poetry for All Seasons.......2000-04-20
This is one of the most beautiful books of poetry I've ever read, and I've read a lot of poetry collections working in an elementary school library. Children of all ages appreciate these poems, many of them haiku, by Japanese masters of the art of brief imagery. If your kids think poetry isn't really poetry unless it rhymes, share this book with them. Demi's incredibly lovely paintings enhance the beauty and idea of each poem. This sweet book inspires kids to try writing their own poetry.
