5 out of 5 stars Read this book and forget the movie.......2007-09-27

I was in the Navy in 1983 when I discovered this book lying around the shop. Having nothing else to read on watch at the time I picked it up and became instantly hooked.

A prior reviewer made the analogy that Harrison runs a thread of choices: No matter what we decide to do in life we can never be certain of the outcomes. What is important is that we are able to live with the options we choose for ourselves. All three short stories contained in this book explore this theme and the character they exhibit when faced with challenges. It seldom works out how we, the reader, want it to end but like the protaganist we are able to make peace with it.

I seldom if ever read a book more than once, but I have read this one at minimum seven times. As a very young man trying to find himself in a huge cold world when I discovered Jim Harrison's work, Legends Of The Fall (And Other Short Stories) became a sort of blueprint for what would follow in my life and how would I meet the challenges: Alcoholism, divorce, death, even my spitituality.

The movie follows the story line very closely and for that we can be grateful. The tale is beautiful on its own and punching it up to make the transition would have been a fruitless exercise. That said, the vivid picture Harrison paints throughout while utilizing an economy of words causes the film to pale in comparrison.

5 out of 5 stars Great read in all seasons.......2006-11-29

This is one of the finast works I've ever had the pleasure of consuming. It covers a almost forgotten period of our nation's history when young men were actually inspired to fight for the honor of a nation and it's culture.
The primacy of male emotions, another much ignored literary topic,is on view in every chapter.
There is action, chvalry, war ,peace, love and revenge.
This is one that is better than the movie and almost impossible to put down.

5 out of 5 stars His best to date.......2006-01-03

I loved this book. It is in my humble opinion the best book Harrison has ever written.

5 out of 5 stars Legend Begins.......2005-07-12

i've red all the books of Harrison and this one is my fav. It's more than the movie it self. All those tough romantic scenes and madness of Tristan leaving to runaway from the real life to sea. They are just perfecly written by Harrison. I first saw this book on a movie (Road House by Patric Swayze) and the man was reading it at a country home... the best place to read it...

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2004-02-13

I thoroughly enjoyed all three novellas, particularly the Man Who Gave up His Name. Jim Harrison's writing through out this book is fantastic and very original. I highly recommend this book. It should be noted that this book is NOT the movie, and attempts to compare or critique the book by comparison with the movie is pointless. The movie was based on only one of the stories, and only bits of the story for that matter.

Book Description

William K. Harvey was the CIA’s most daring and successful field operator during the tense, early days of the Cold War. Extremely intelligent, a dedicated martini drinker, coarse in manner and appearance, both loved and hated, he was larger than life. But just as Harvey reached his zenith, fate and personal flaws caused his swift, dramatic downfall. Bayard Stockton provides a rich portrait of the man, including accounts from Harvey’s family, friends, and former CIA colleagues who have never spoken publicly before.

Harvey’s intelligence career began at the FBI, where he hunted Nazi spies. After running afoul of J. Edgar Hoover, Harvey went to the fledgling CIA in 1947. Harvey’s CIA successes included the unmasking of Soviet spy Kim Philby and masterminding the famous Berlin Tunnel that tapped Russian communications. The pinnacle of Harvey’s career came as chief of both ZR/RIFLE, the agency’s political assassination operation, and Task Force W, the group targeted on Cuba. But Harvey was in constant conflict with Bobby Kennedy, who micromanaged operations against Fidel Castro. Harvey profanely insulted the president’s brother during a tense meeting, which led to Harvey’s reassignment to Rome. His alcoholism worsened in Italian exile, and he was forced to retire. He became a nonperson.

However, Harvey resurfaced during Senate hearings in the 1970s. When his supervision of the plots to assassinate Castro was revealed, many labeled Harvey the epitome of CIA excess. Harvey’s continuing friendship with Johnny Rosselli, a Mafia figure who had helped the CIA with Cuban operations, opened further questions as some—most notably Robert Blakey, former chief counsel to the House Subcommittee on Assassinations—linked Rosselli to JFK’s assassination.

Flawed Patriot cuts through the rumors and inaccuracies surrounding Harvey to show a brilliant but flawed man who was undoubtedly one of the most talented and imaginative officers in the agency’s storied history.

3 out of 5 stars A tough read.......2007-05-07

There's a lot of great info in this book, but unless you're REALLY into FBI/CIA/Bill Harvey, it's very dry reading. It jumps around a bit, but if you persevere, you'll find some interesting tidbits here and there.

5 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Title.......2007-02-02

This book has a brilliant title. Bill Harvey was indeed a Patriot. And he certainly had flaws. His drinking was a problem from early in his life and combined with smoking was at least partly responsible for the heart attacks that killed him at the relatively early age of 61.

He was also not exactly what you would call a team player. He was fired by J. Edgar Hoover for breaking regulations. His relationship with Robert Kennedy might best be called hatred. While he did some brilliant work, like identifying Kim Philby as a KGB agent and the famous tunnel into East Berlin, his relationship with the Mafia and rumors about being involved in the JFK assassination are not the sort of things that help get promotions within an organization like the CIA.

This is both an interesting biography of a full fledged master spy, and a history of the early days of the CIA and the Cold War. The author worked for Harvey in Berlin for two years before becomming a journalist and now a biographer.

3 out of 5 stars The CIA Legend part is correct.......2007-01-23

Flawed Patriot has a great topic in Bill Harvey. The author's direct knowledge seems to be based on Harvey's career in Germany . The research of the late Mr. Stockton of much of the career of Bill Harvey appeares flawed. The drama of Bill and CG's adoption of a daughter in Germany is in line with what they told my wife and me in Rome,Italy in the mid 1960s. The events surronding Bill's return to Washington from Rome are not fair and complete and appear to be based on interviews that lack some of the facts.
Based on my personal knowledge and my research as an intelligence scholar and professor, Flawed Patroit does no justice to the pioneering work of Bill Harvey in clandestine collection, covert action and technical intelligence operations. In my opinion, Bill Harvey ranks amond the Top Ten Clandestine Service Officers in the history of the Central Intelligence Agency.

2 out of 5 stars A true American patriot deserves better than this........2007-01-16

Bill Harvey was a larger-than-life secret agent who bull-dogged his way through the corridors of power in WW-11 FBI (where his sin of not being instantly available to take Herbert Hoover's telephone call cost him Napoleon's blessings), the OSS and eventually the CIA.

The apotheosis of Harvey's career was conceiving of and managing the digging of the Berlin Tunnel in 1953--an audacious wire-tap of 172 telephone cables just over the border in East Berlin. Before the author gets to telling us this story, he foreshadows it many times as if he's already told it. When he does tell it, the tale is vague and incomplete. Little of the extreme tension is conveyed that this major espionage coup created among the band of agents who carried it out, and none of the exultation.

Harvey was an anomaly in the rising intelligence community. Just like those other genius mavericks--General Billy Mitchell, General George Patton, Col. Charlie Beckwith--he bucked his superiors to get things done, and like them, he was undone by the iron law of all bureaucracies-- that fealty is much more important than results. His resentment at Bobbie Kennedy's ultra micro-managing of the Bay of Pigs fiasco certainly contributed to its failure. It certainly scuttle Harvey's career. Yet what politician has ever learned the harsh lesson that others' are better at their jobs than they are--so let them do their jobs?

A serious 3-martini luncheon schmoozer, Harvey was adroit in finding and attracting talented cohorts. He built up highly loyal groups in spite of the usual internecine infighting that is the hallmark of all operational organizations. In the end his drinking got the better of him, and he was cast off like all such "failures."

This author (deceased) needed a rigorous editor to get his house in order. The work is a mish-mash of anecdotes and commentary, all presented in no particular order, as if a massive re-ordering of chapters had been undertaken at the last minute. Names appear out of nowhere as if we had already been introduced. Too bad. Bill Harvey was a true American patriot; he deserves better than this.

5 out of 5 stars A great surprise and a beautiful book.......2006-11-20

I found this book in a pretty unexpected way. At work, I as putting together a team of people to take on a new problem. None of the members knew each other well and they all knew me even less.

I had read once about an ice breaker activity where each person is given a page of a picture book that they can't show to anyone. The objective is for each participant to talk one-on-one about the page they have, figure out what the pictures are supposed to convey and what order they go in.

That started me searching the world of wordless picture books. Once I found this book, I knew I had something great.

It doesn't feel like a standard children's story. As others have described, the book begins with a boy falling asleep reading an atlas. As you drift across the pages, you fall into the boy's dreamscape transitioning from one adventurous world after another. As you explore each page, you lose yourself in the gorgeous scenery and are captured by the detail the illustrator poured into in this boy's dream.

Adults will love it. My boy, age 7, enjoyed it. This was definitely different from anything else we've read together. We talked about everything that we saw and what was happening.

This was a very different experience from the straight-forward bedtime story. He read it a few times by himself and it was great that he was able to read something with so much wonderful detail. If you find yourself reciting your bedtime stories to your kids while your mind drifts off to making your grocery list this is a great change.

I've since picked up "Sector 7" and "Tuesday" which are also beautifully illustrated but "Freefall" can't be beat for capturing your imagination and taking you on a wonderful ride.

By the way, the ice breaker worked out pretty well too. What a nice way to turn adults back into kids again for a few hours.

Have your children investigate every page carefully- this book encourages self-awareness and promotes the exploration of the subconscious

4 out of 5 stars Picture Book Review.......2001-04-26

Free Fall By: David Wiesner David Wiesner sends the reader on a magical journey through a young boy's dream to a far off land in his creative picture book titled, Free Fall. He does this by using only detailed pictures. Free Fall is an Caldecott honor award winning book for its excellent use of the imagination. Free Fall begins with a young boy fast asleep with a storybook lying open on his chest. The boy begins to dream while the pages of the book start to fly and take life. He becomes a character in the book as the chess pieces begin to talk with him. He then goes through many exciting adventures during the course of the book. He protects the town from a frightening dragon, becomes an oversized boy towering above all, and even becomes so small that he can fly on a single leaf. He flies right next to the swans just above the waters, and then he...wakes to the daylight shining through his window. He sits up, looks at his fish bowl beside his bed, and admires the seagulls at his windowpane with a smile on his face. David Wiesner uses fantasy and adventure to give a child an unlimited imagination in his book, Free Fall. The title page automatically sets the reader up for a fulfilled magical ride. The title page looks like a map made out of the boy's bed sheet to give the reader a sense of where the story will take us. The first page of the book lets the reader know that the boy fell asleep while reading a book. Then the reader turns the page, and night suddenly turns into day from one page to the next. The boy's room starts to disappear into rolling open fields with mountains towering in the background through clouds. The boy becomes as small as a chess piece, and starts to have conversations with the other pieces. On the next page, the chess pieces turn into a beautiful life-size castle, and the people have shrunk to a smaller size. Then, a dragon appears, and the boy is left to protect the people using only a sword and shield. As the reader turns the page, the pages of the young boy's storybook begin to turn also, while characters in his book suddenly jump into his dream. The reader can see the people coming out of the pages. The boy then grows vast, soaring over all. He takes adventures though the mountains, as well as takes flight though the air. He flies along with the swans until the waters subtly turns back into his bed sheets. A foggy haze once again appears, and the boy is awakened by the light of the morning. Wiesner takes the reader, the child, on an adventure though another child's dream. The colors of the pictures are subtle and dull, so that it reflects that of a hazy dream-like state. The picture book is put together very well as the pages slowly drift into the next scene of the boy's thoughts. For example, the boy's bed sheets blend into rolling hills, the hills fade into a chessboard, and the pieces convert into the towers of a castle. The pages of the book turn gradually into steps, and then transform into sides of buildings. The mountains then turn into bread as the boy's bed sheet reappears as a tablecloth. The tablecloth suddenly transforms into rough waters, as the food breaks into pieces forming into fish. As daylight breaks through, the waters turn into the boy's bed sheets once again. The transformation of the bed sheet into so many different items may relate to what a child can imagine a bed sheet to become. The uses of objects, such as the boy's bed sheet, for more then one purpose is a great way to express an exploring, creative mind, such as the young boy's in the book Wiesner's Free Fall, creates an adventure for the child through the great usage of imagination. This allows the child to not only enjoy the book, but also relate to the book. The child learns that bedtime, an often unpopular time, can open up a world of excitement for them.

5 out of 5 stars A visual and imaginitive journey.......2000-12-17

Free Fall is a series of wonderful illustrations of apparently unrelated imaginary worlds seamlessly stitched together by familiar textures. As with other books by David Wiesner, the closer you look the more you will appreciate his work.

Warning: This is not a traditional story. Young children probably will need your help to follow along.

If you appreciate creativity, imagination and quality illustration and want to pass this on to your children this book is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars The very best Lizzie Borden book that I have read.......2006-05-23

I've read most, though not all, of the books on Lizzie Borden and I think that this is easily the best. This is the most complete and unbiased presentation of the facts. Kent looks very carefully at a variety of evidence, including the contradictory. I think that Kent would like to believe her innocent, but this remains very even-handed and presents evidence for guilt as well as innocence. In the end, he concludes, correctly I believe, that this is no way to resolve the matter one way or the other, and he doesn't indulge in wild speculation.

I don't have strong opinions on whether Lizzie Borden was guilty or not, but I agree with Kent that the evidence for a verdict "beyond reasonable doubt" simply wasn't there. This is not to be confused with concluding that she was innocent.

After this book, I would recommend Edward Radin's Lizzie Borden, which shares with this book the virtue of an author who actually weighed the evidence before coming to a conclusion. Whether or not one agrees with Radin that she was innocent, he did a lot of valuable research. I would also recommend Robert Sullivan's Goodbye Lizzie Borden, with some reservations. Sullivan apparently never considered the possiblity that she didn't do it. He presents a convincing case that she might have gotten away with it even if she was guilty, but this isn't the same thing as proving guilt.

5 out of 5 stars The Baffling Puzzle of the Unsolved Murders.......2004-01-23

This very readable book provided new evidence on the life and legend of Lizzie Borden, who was found 'not guilty' of a double murder. The book lists the people involved, and a Bibliography of books, short stories, plays, an opera, a ballet, and articles and essays. It lacks an index. David Kent provides "the essence of historical truth" in this one best book on this topic. DK simply laid out the facts to let the reader come to his own conclusion, unlike other writers. Many are fascinated by that brutal slaying that remains an unsolved crime. The Preface provides a summary of previous books with his evaluations; he omits the books of Robert Sullivan and Arnold R. Brown. E.H. Porter was biased against Lizzie.

Andrew Jackson Borden was the president of a Fall River bank and on the board of directors of three others. He owned substantial properties and was a director of three major textile mills. Fall River was famous for its cotton industry since the Civil War. DK quotes the 'Daily Herald' for the first news of the murders. There was a farm hand who wanted money from Mr. Borden (see Bertha Manchester?). There were imprints of two men in the hay (when?). The Medical Examiner said Mrs. Borden was killed by a tall man who struck from behind. A suspicious man was seen in the morning. The police searched high and low for any suspicious strangers. Lizzie said she had dressed to go shopping; after the murders she changed out of her morning dress. The 'Daily Herald' of August 5 sums up the problems for a concealed murderer (pp.25-30). Only two people were left alive that morning. Bridget was not a suspect after the first day. The jury said Lizzie wasn't guilty. Who was left?

Chapter 4 tells of the problem in timing from 10:45 to 11:15. DK suggests falsified testimony from Bridget and Lizzie (p.36). That Friday evening Morse sneaked out of the house, unseen by the crowd in front or the police guarding the property. Could another have done this Thursday morning? What was the motive? Was the survivor the real killer (p.56)? Knowlton admitted he expected a not guilty verdict (p.78)! Chapter 8 tells of the crank letters and confessions, mostly anonymous (note the one from Albany NY). Reporter Henry Trickey was set up with a hoax story. Chapter 9 tells of the media circus and the beginning of the trial. Lizzie could not have done it unless she were insane, but there was not evidence of insanity or that she committed the murders. The house was searched room-by-room, each garment was examined on the outside, then turned inside out. ME Dolan said the killer was left-handed; Lizzie was right-handed.

Chapter 12 mentions the cover-up by the Harvard Doctors who were prosecution witnesses; they withheld exculpatory evidence. There was no weapon, no bloodstained clothing, no hard motive, no eyewitnesses. Chapter 15 had the defense summation, still valid and valuable. In Chapter 16 Knowlton says there was a skeleton in the Borden household! At the end of the trial Justice Dewey addressed the jury that quickly acquitted Lizzie (Chapter 17). After the verdict a crowd of 2,000 gathered at the murder scene, but Lizzie and Emma stayed away (Chapter 18). The Epilogue tells us that a 'not guilty' verdict was not accepted by the masses; the stigma of the indictment and trial remained. "Verdict first, then the trial" is not just from 'Alice in Wonderland'. Can this happen again?

    Lizzie Borden took a hike,
    After Mother got nineteen strikes,
While she was out of doors,
    Her Father took eleven more.

    3 out of 5 stars Not Biased??.......2003-12-08

Kent is very biased in favor of Lizzies innocence...was he serious when he wrote early in the book that Lizzies accusers cast her as intelligent and cunning...if so extremely lucky, or manical and crazy walking through a minefield and again being lucky...WE CAN'T HAVE IT BOTH WAYS! OK, so an intruder is supposed to be even luckier with TWO possible witnesses!!! Let us be for real! Victoria Lincolns book is far superior...and I don't even buy her claim of epilipsy. (Victoria Lincoln can be forgiven for trying to give Lizzie an excuss...) Kent stated early on that he would let the facts lay where they may and let the reader decide...as long as they don't decide that Lizzie was the one...we are constantly reminded...Read Lincoln's account, it's facinating!

5 out of 5 stars Best Pictures and Background Facts.......2000-05-06

The MOST important new evidence is the fact that a fairly new hatchet was used (the shred of gilt paint in Abby's skull) - not reported in the past; the old hatchet found in the basement could NOT have been the murder weapon! The "Harvard Perjury" was the testimony preceded by "I believe that ..." the old hatchet was the murder weapon. The common sense jury knew that the hatchet head was SAWN off, not broken off.

The chapter on rumors carries the full text of the anonymous letter from Albany (most likely Joseph Carpenter?) sent to both the Prosecutor and the Marshall. The misspelled "Bordon" name is just a sample of "plausible denial", in case somebody (with a hatchet) came to talk to him. The letter that was later found on a Rome NY street pointing to J. Carpenter was a way to get even; somebody connected with the case wasn't fooled.

This book is a very good complementary to Arnold R. Brown's "final chapter" on the case - as good a solution as you can find after a century.

Edward Radin's 1961 book re-investigated the case, and talked to some contemporaries who knew Lizzie. He was the first to show Pearson's biased reporting, and had his own solution (based on his own experiences as a crime reporter).

The 1973 book by Robert Sullivan, lawyer and judge, provides another point of view. His opinion that "there was enough evidence to convict" shows prejudgment of the case. His book quotes Judge Justin Dewey's charge to the jury, as true and important today as a century ago. He interviewed Abby Borden Whitehead Potter, Abby's niece (and Godchild?).

The most important thing about this case was the condition of the blood of the victims. Red and liquid for freshly-killed Andrew, black and clotted for Abby (predeceased for over an hour). Think about that in a more recent case!

4 out of 5 stars Just the Facts, Liz.......2000-04-26

Borden fans should check out this wonderful book which presents "just the facts" of the murder case. As many people know, "Fall River Tragedy" by Porter is considered THE BIBLE as far as Lizzie lore goes...but Kent points out that Porter was a yellow journalist whose book was a re-hashing of his numerous, sensationalized newspaper articles of the day. Furthermore, Porter was one-sided against Lizzie. Let's stop looking to Porter as the definitive text on the case, and give Kent a try...he doesn't offer any solution, but at least he doesn't offer any biases and nonsense either.

      Book Description

"Upon first seeing the movie," says Chachere, a Jungian analyst, "I was thunderstruck by the story and knew immediately I had to do 'work' on this." The result is analysis plus emotion -- lots of emotion. Chachere calls the movie "a great masterpiece," and tells how "the trick with myth and legend is to learn from them, be moved by them, and to experience them."

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Great Analysis!!!.......2006-02-22

I could have written this book myself and I wasn't a pysch major as an undergrad. This book was on point with what I always said regarding the movie and I am pleased to say that it was a great read-I finished it in 5 hours!!!

5 out of 5 stars Legends of the Fall .......2004-08-19

If you loved this movie, you will love this book. Chachere's penetrating analysis of a modern classic asks deep questions as we confront the dilemmas of our age:"What do we do with our agression? Our anger? Our rage? How do we lose the madness? How do we honor the feminine in the right way? What goes so wrong in our families,in our relationships?" And--in keeping with the spirit of this film and the novella by Jim Harrison--"What is the healing role of wild nature and its animals?" Ultimately, as Chachere suggests, this story of the Ludlow family affirms life, wonderfully and with great dignity and redemption, and we are invited to participate fully as we follow the film and its soundtrack step by step. As Jung once wrote,"There is deep doctrine in the legend of the fall" and here, Richard Chachere proves it.

      Book Description

This is not a racing book. This is the story of an complex and amazing individual who happened to be one of the greatest race car drivers of his time. The glory days of racing serve as the back drop for a stormy love triangle that was the talk of the tiny resort village of Daytona Beach during the late 50's and early `60s

Glenn "Fireball" Roberts was the first modern superstar of stock car racing. He was truly ahead of his time and already a legend in his late 20's. Unfortunately, for the woman he loved and the racing community, his time ran out far too early.

Godwin Kelly became enamored with this story while working on a special feature story for the Daytona Beach News-Journal's coverage of the 2004 July race. During the research, he discovered there was much more to Glenn Roberts than the "Fireball" persona the public saw.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the graetest ever.......2007-01-22

Glenn Roberts Jr. may be the best racer to ever turn left. If your old enough to remember him, you should read this book! I think you will soon realize you nor I knew half as much about the man as we thought we did. This book along with Best Damn Garage by Smokey Yunick are by far the best for any Nascar fan.

1 out of 5 stars Wow, this book was bad.......2006-03-28

I have to agree with the last guy who reviewed this book. I figured from all the stories I have heard about "Fireball" that this book would knock my socks off. Instead it went all over the place and then again it went nowhere. Hardly any racing stories at all and not much about the crash that took his life. Some of the pictures were neat to see but just about every picture in the book is used more then once. You would think there is tons of photos out there of him, so the need to keep using the same photos at different parts of the book seemed odd. And way to many pics of his girlfriend. I sometimes felt like the book was about her, more then him. If you can pick this up cheap somewhere for a few dollars it may be worth it. Other then that, it was a huge letdown. I read it fairly quick and when I was done it was like I learned nothing at all about the man.

5 out of 5 stars Fireball: Legends Don't Fall From the Sky.......2006-03-13

Well written and quite revealing history of Glenn Roberts. I especially liked the no judgement type writing that gives us a clear picture of the man outside of the racetrack. Well done.

1 out of 5 stars Poorly written!! Don't but this.......2005-10-21

This book is the worst NASCAR book I have ever read. The writer jumps all around Fireball's life but never delves into anything deep. There is no continunity in the time line of the book. I would not recommend this book to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars FIREBALL: Legends don't fall from the shy.......2005-06-04

NASCAR FANS: DON'T MISS THIS ONE!!..For those to young to remember stock car racing's beginning, this book is a must read.
Godwin Kelly writes from the heart and soul of a sport that he knows and loves from his many years as a sports writer.
This book is a personal and compelling story of one of racing's
most colorful legends when they rolled up their sleeves and RACED! Not for the money or the fame..for the raw sport.
      Great read!!...Shiela Sharp...Indiana race fan...

      FALL APART

Summer's over. Kerry, Josh, Brandy, Scott, and Rebecca have left their California share and returned to school. Once, there was nothing better than the freedom and energy rush of college. But in the wake of such a life-altering summer, campus life leaves the friends feeling restless -- and bored.

Kerry, for one, barely leaves her dorm room. She keeps reading Daniel's journals over and over, searching for a clue to solve the mystery that is Season Howe. But answers aren't to be found -- until the evil witch is finally spotted in Las Vegas.

The five friends trek to the city of sin, rallying to fight Season. She destroyed something important to them, and they all seek revenge. Unfortunately the season won't end without her taking something else: a life even more precious than the first....

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Hello, Mother Blessing.......2006-02-15

Kerry has been devastated by her losses in the first book. She is trying to concentrate on her classes but is unable to. Her friends from the summer are not doing much better. Kerry then decides to take off and search for Daniel's mother. Clues in his journals make Kerry think this is possible. Her goal is to learn magic so she can defeat Season.

Kerry does succeed in finding Mother Blessing although the woman is not what she expects. But after some time Kerry does begin her lessons in witchcraft. There is much about magic that Kerry did not understand but her quest to destroy Season motivates her every moment. Lessons and testing continue until Kerry is forced into a greater test than she had been expecting.

Kerry is developing nicely in this volume and it ends with a bit of a cliff hanger that makes the reader want to move right into the next volume. The reader becomes much more familiar with how magic works in these stories. There is also quite a bit of development of Kerry's friends. If you were wondering if some of them were sleeping together, this volume answers some of those questions.

5 out of 5 stars Something Wicked This Way Comes.......2005-01-05

Summer has ended, and 17-year-old Kerry Profitt, along with her summer friends Brandy, Scott, Rebecca, and Josh, have headed away from San Diego, and off to their respective colleges where they hope to further their education. Unfortunately, the horror from the summer has left it's mark in the brain of each young person, making learning a challenge. The five teens will never forget what they saw over the summer, as Daniel Blessing, a witch, was brutally murdered by another witch named Season. Now Season occupies all of their thoughts, and they are imagining that she's everywhere. Until she finally shows up in the city of sin known as Las Vegas. Soon the five friends are reuniting, but to something savage and brutal that scares them to death, and sends them running for home. Except for Kerry. Kerry heads out to the Great Dismal to learn witchcraft from Mother Blessing. After all, there's no use in running from Season, so she'd better learn how to fight.

Jeff Mariotte is a fabulous author, who held his own when he was writing for the BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER series, but with the WITCH SEASON series, he stands in a class of his own. Mariotte's character development is fabulous, as is his portrayal of a group of teenagers all with their own personalities and quirks. Readers, both male and female, will be able to find a character whose personality matches theirs. Fans of teen paranormal books, or teen fiction in general will be pleased by this fabulous new series.

5 out of 5 stars Are there really witches among us?.......2004-11-13

      <P>
Kerry, Josh, Brandy, Scott, and Rebecca have left the quaint resort on the coast of California. A life-altering summer in which they spent most of their time in pursuit of an evil witch named Season Howe. Ultimately ending in Daniel Blessing's death, Kerry's boyfriend.

Almost a hermit, Kerry barely leaves her Northwestern University dorm room. Instead she sits day after day pouring over Daniel's journals. Kerry's hope is to unearth even the smallest detail that will aid in some chance of exposing the enigma of a ruthless killer.

Finding her efforts fruitless, Kerry decides to find Mother Blessing the only link left to Daniel Again she pours over the journals piecing a map together, a route that will lead her into the Great Dismal Swamp.

Meanwhile her friends have grown restless after receiving a cryptic email from Kerry- and discovering that Season Howe has been spotted in "Sin City." Striking a nerve, the five friends embark on a pilgrimage to Las Vegas--the city of dreams, gathering, to duel the evil witch. Their cause has several reasons: Making her pay for what she did to Daniel and making sure she never makes it to the Witches' Convocation.

Although after a grueling match of wits Kerry learns Mother Blessing is hiding something. Something she feels even Daniel was unaware of....

If you don't believe in witches, this series will surely help change your mind!

Characters from previous books appear lending a feeling of continuity for long time readers and will keep you gripping your seat until the very last page is read. Fall (Witch Season) is entertaining and well done; unique in that it is both a book and a series. Mariotte's style is deceivingly fresh. Definitely a scary novel for teenagers, yet one that anyone would enjoy, and could make a nice gift for young and old fantasy fans alike.
