Book Description

Living Time is at once a personal odyssey, an intimate doctor-patient communication, and a prescriptive guide for patients and their families. Writing with wit and humility, Dr. Bernadine Healy shares the hard-won insights that transformed her own struggle with a deadly cancer more than seven years ago, affirming her identity as patient and doctor with the many who share this journey.

Together with more than ten million survivors in the United States alone, Dr. Healy, former director of the National Institutes of Health, is a close witness to the medical advances that have brought us to a turning point in the war on cancer. This quiet revolution is curing a growing number of cancers and transforming many others from a death sentence to a chronic illness, one that calls for vigilance but not despair.

Beginning with her own compelling story, Dr. Healy interweaves it with one of the most lucid narratives ever written of what cancer is, how it works in our bodies, and how we can defeat it. She explains how genetic research and other new approaches are radically altering diagnosis and treatment, and she offers precise and empowering ways for patients and their families to access the information and support they need to secure the best in modern cancer care. She also underlines the urgency of accelerating the pace of research that could map out and destroy cancer in the twenty-first century.

Dr. Healy is forthright about the rigors of treatment and the toll cancer still takes, but readers will come away from her book with the information, resources, and heartfelt encouragement they need to look forward to a future with hope.

4 out of 5 stars A must for brain cancer patients/families.......2007-07-23

The first chapter of this book was mesmerizing. Could it mirror my family's crisis any more? It was very kind of Dr. Healy to share her experience. I now know that my family isn't the only one blindsided by an oligodendroglioma. There was a shift in the book, however, from personal to technical. It discusses how cancer happens on the cellular level. It's good information, but sometimes it read like a medical text. There is a lot of imformation on the types of research being done and the hope that all patients should have. It was general enough for anyone dealing with cancer, but particularly beneficial for those with brain cancer. She includes a wonderful list of resources for cancer patients. I also appreciated that even as a doctor, she encouraged cancer patients to make there own informed decisions about their health care.

5 out of 5 stars living time.......2007-07-03

An excellent book, loaded with facts, for anyone suffering from cancer, heart disease or other medical conditions.

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description

After meals from garbage cans and dumpsters, night after night Mike and Sam found their beds under bridges and on the streets. They were forced to depend on the generosity and kindness of strangers as they panhandled to sustain their existence. For more than five months, the pair experienced firsthand the extreme pains of hunger, the constant uncertainty and danger of living on the streets, exhaustion, depression, and social rejection—and all of this by their own choice. This is their story. Through Mike’s firsthand account, Under the Overpass provides important insight into the truths of the street and calls the younger generation of believers to take great risks of faith to bring Christ’s love to the neediest corners of the world.

“I Am Disgusting.”

Mike Yankoski’s life went from upper-middle class plush to scum-of-the-earth repulsive overnight. By his own choice. From the United States capital to San Diego, Mike and his traveling companion, Sam, journeyed as homeless men for five months. Not for a project or even in response to a dare. He needed to know if his faith in God was real—if he could actually be the Christian he said he was apart from the comforts he’d always known.

So with only a bag on his back, a guitar in his hand, and Sam by his side, he set out. And like any traveler in a foreign land, he returned a different man. Mike’s unusual, captivating, and challenging story will rock your own world…perhaps even change your life.

Pull out quote/sidebar/starburst:

“Thoreau said, ‘Simplify, simplify, simplify!,’ but at that moment I couldn’t help wondering if I had gone too far.”

Story Behind the Book

“Faith is more than just an emphatic ‘Amen’ at the end of the sermon on Sunday morning. Frustrated with the feeling of having strong convictions and yet not being able to do anything about them, I began to understand Paul’s promise of contentment in Christ ‘whether with everything or with nothing.’ What would it look like to give up the comfortable life and live homeless? Is God enough to sustain me? Is He trustworthy? Is He worth staking my life on? What happens if I die? Will I even survive? Such questions rang loudly in my mind as we decided to lay down everything in a full embrace of the homeless life. Some experiences were uncomfortable, some shocking, some disturbing, some hilarious, and still others frustrating, but five months of life on the streets has left us, our faith, and our lives forever changed.”

If you proclaim Jesus Christ and your Lord, you need to read this book. It will awaken the sleeping Christ living inside of you. Wanna know what Jesus would do, He would be about reaching out to people who need to be seen and loved. This book will shake your faith awake.

5 out of 5 stars under the overpass.......2007-08-04

This book has launched a new ministry for our faith community. This book was first read by a youth in our senior high group and August 6th we began our ministry. Currently (August 2007), we have the privilege of knowing approximately 12 folks who literally live 'under the overpass.' Our friendships have grown. We meet the folks where their needs are. We are able to assist with their laundry, hygiene, medical needs and transportation thru various available resources. There is one couple who have been able to regularly attend our church services with the aide of transportation. Several of our friends have been able to assist with "Habitat for Humanity" (they thrive on working with a purposeful intention). We recently finished our vacation Bible school and one of our friends was able to assist with the set-up and running of our outside market place. These ARE our friends, and we are their trusted friends. Now that is God! Thanks to this young man and his travelmate for sharing their experience and igniting the 'ol Holy Spirit in us! We each are humbled that the Lord has selected "us" to be involved in His divine connection known as friendship. Thank You Jesus!

This book has truly changed my heart and my perspective towards homeless people. I feel compassion and a strong urge act out these emotions. It amazes me how one book can change my total outlook. I find myself stopping and talking to homeless whenever I see one. I give them granola bars and jamba juices and it makes me so happy to see their faces light up just knowing that someone cares for them. I would give this book to anyone to read because it challenges you to do what's right. As a Christian, this book put it straightforward and lets you know what is up.

5 out of 5 stars A Great, Great inspiring book!.......2007-06-18

This book is just fascinating. It gives you a glimps into homeless life & life on the street, yet from a perspective you can relate to. The guys in the book aren't drug-addicts, or mentally ill. They are from middle-class america & are very relatable. I have bought this book for several high school graduates this year. And will also be recommending it for my book club. I think all types would enjoy this book. It doesn't get too preachy, just truly spiritual with a few bible verses to make you think. I can't say enough good things about it. It was recommended to me by a teacher. You will love it!

Written teen to teen as a first-person narrative, this is not a book about the Columbine shootings - instead, it's a story of faith, told in Rachel's own words. The book includes first person narratives, journal entries, drawings from Rachel's diary, and notes from her parents and friends at Columbine High School. Additionally, "me pages" (what makes me angry, what I'm aftraid of) encourage teens to explore issues central to their lives and faith. Highlighting Rachel's faith journey from the time she became a Christian, through her joys and doubts, her hopes and dreams, this story is a triumphant testimony that teens will treasure.

5 out of 5 stars engrossing book.......2006-11-13

I highly recommend this book. Based on her real journals, you feel by the end of this book like you knew Rachal Scott personally. Even though it's not the exact journal entries, Beth Nimmo, Rachal's mother collaborated with the writer, and you get the sense that Rachal's true character was captured. This book brings to life a girl mature and inciteful beyond her years. I was humbled and deeply moved by her total commitment to living out her faith in Christ. I appreciate especially her honesty. Her story brings to life the loss of such a beautiful young woman. You don't need to be a teenage girl to read this book, but every teenager should read it.Thank you Beth for allowing us to walk along side her in her last years.

Book Description

The Critical Journey, at its core, is a description of the spiritual journey—our response to our faith in God with the resulting changes that follow. Four completely new chapters, applying the six stages to areas of ministry, church, and personal life, have been added, as well as a section of questions and answers. Many new resources for teaching and group leadership are now available through the author's web page.

The Critical Journey, at its core, is a description of the spiritual journey—our response to our faith in God with the resulting changes that follow.

In this book the authors address the following issues: the struggle to find meaning and wholeness, the crisis of values and identity at mid-life, the quest for self-actualization, the healing of early religious experiences, questions about the spiritual journey.

The Critical Journey does not reveal exactly how or when we need to move along in our personal pilgrimages, nor does it offer formulas for spiritual growth. Rather, it describes six phases of the spiritual journey and illustrates how people act and think while in these stages.

This is an excellent guide for those who are wrestling with their faith and wondering how others have resolved their "dark nights of the soul."

4 out of 5 stars Finally, a helpful assessment of spiritual growth.......2007-07-23

Janet Hagberg has written one of the most helpful books I know for Pastors and Christian Educators. Those of us who have searched wide and near for a complete model of growth and been disappointed with Rick Warren's truncated version will likely find The Critical Journey to be a better fit.

I am buying multiple copies and using them in my classes and coaching sessions. Her newest version is even better than the earlier copies.

5 out of 5 stars The Critical Journey, Stages in the Life of Faith, Second Edition.......2007-01-12

This is an extremely helpful book for Christians and Christian leaders to understand the stages of spiritual formation of individuals and of congregations. Hagberg breaks down the Christian journey into very understandable and comprehensive stages that are relavent and make great sense. I would recommend it to all who want to have a better understanding of their own and other's journey in Christ.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE for all who help others grow spiritually.......2007-01-09

Hagberg does an amazing job explaining in a way that is easy to grasp how we grow spiritually. It not only helps me as I work with others but it has helped my own spiritual growth. I recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars Tender, wise, and fatherly.......2007-09-15

All of Billy Graham's books are annointed with the power of God Almighty. He himself is saturated with Christ. What a desperately needed blessing he has been to our world! He will go on having the same impact on this weary planet even after he has gone to be with our Lord.

Wonderful insight into the mind of Billy Graham and his unswerving faith and devotion to salvation thru Jesus Christ.

5 out of 5 stars How to Live a Biblical Life.......2007-08-22

The Reverend Billy Graham explains his understanding of the meaning and purpose of God, Jesus, the Bible, and the Holy Spirit and their role in daily life. He describes ways to deal with challenges and temptations and offers practical advice on living joyously.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Handbook.......2007-06-12

Billy Graham is ever the true believer but never an ideologue. He understands sin, Satan, and our Savior. His ability to interpret the Bible to form the rationale for good living is nothing short of miraculous. He points to his own trials, failures, and triumphs as well as those of others. Whatever is wrong with America now, we need to look at what was right to produce Billy Graham. He often references his mother and her knowledge of the Bible. Therein must lay a principal source of his knowledge, strength, and faith. Yet like John Paul, his is never rigid about the value of families in themselves. God has his plan for all of us, Graham reiterates. We need only start from here and go forward.

Bread for the Journey: A Daybook of Wisdom and Faith is a devotional containing meditations for every day of the year. Henry Nouwen begins the book by honing in on everyday experiences and objects. His reflection on the spiritual significance of mealtime, for instance, renders breakfast a revelatory hour:
The table is one of the most intimate places in our lives. It is there that we give ourselves to one another. When we say, "Take some more, let me serve you another plate, let me pour you another glass...," we say a lot more than our words express. We invite our friends to become part of our lives. We want them to be nurtured by the same food and drink that nurture us. We desire communion.
As the year progresses, Nouwen's focus shifts to the person of Jesus, the nature of the Church, and, finally, to the eternal life that is facilitated, in part, by books of wisdom like this one. --Michael Joseph Gross

Book Description

When beloved author Henri Nouwen set out to record this daybook of totally new reflections, he suddenly found himself on "a true spiritual adventure." For in these 366 original, interlocking morsels of daily wisdom, Nouwen provides both sustenance and a trail for us to follow, as he unveils, to his own surprise, his personal map of faith. From the delicate interplay of human experience to the surrender to Christ and the embrace of Christian community, that journey of Christian spirituality is explored and celebrated here in each eloquent, thought–provoking passage,

"The table is one of the most intimate places in our lives. It is there that we give ourselves to one another. When we say, 'Take some more, let me serve you another plate, let me pour you another glass, don't be shy, enjoy it,' we say a lot more than our words express. We invite our friends to become part of our lives. We want them to be nurtured by the same food and drink that nurture us. We desire communion.... Every breakfast, lunch, or dinner can become a time of growing communion with one another."

Intimately personal and inspiring, Bread for the Journey is a daily feast of fresh insight into the challenges and deep joys of a life lived in close communion with God. Nouwen is a wise, loving companion who invites us along as he finds joy in the community of loss, true freedom in forgiveness of others, and hope in surprising places. Each daily meditation is a stepping–stone along a path of private discovery, offering Nouwen's seasoned yet fresh ideas on kindness, love, suffering, and prayer, the Church as God's people, and the importance of Jesus in one's life–reflecting, as a whole, Nouwen's own 'personal creed.' Bread for the Journey brims with daily nourishment and guidance for devoted followers and new friends alike –– food for thought on a yearlong journey of discovery and faith.

5 out of 5 stars "our" Daily Bread - feasting with Henri Nouwen as assistant chef.......2006-12-03

INTRODUCTION:
From the St. Matthew Gospel (4,4): "It is written: 'Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.' "

These were the words of our Lord and Savior Jesus quoting Holy Scripture in Deuteronomy 8:3 showing the importance of spiritual nourishment. "Bread for the Journey" is a great daily devotional/meditational book with contemplative tid-bits for thought on our daily journey as Christians. If you are not on a spiritual journey with God this book will help you form an appetite for God's Word and God's thoughts. If God as Creator is the Chef, then Henri Nouwen thru this daily meditational book is His assistant cook.

AUTHOR:
Wikipedia describes Nouwen as "a Dutch Catholic priest and writer who authored 40 books on the spiritual life." In recent years, Nouwen's meditative writings are popular with many Protestants (especially those from the emergent/emerging Church movement). Nouwen was also a pastoral psychology, and theology professor at Notre Dame, Yale, and Harvard universities, and spent the latter part of his life working exclusively with the developmentally disabled.

CONTENT:
The book is organized by months, and the only pattern that I could find is that some number of consecutive days are focused on a larger theme (e.g. about "Being ____", or "Jesus is _____," empowered and Holy Spirit, the church, eternal life, joy, sorrow, and others). Many of the daily meditations seem to fit the Christian calendar and major holidays.

CONCLUSION:
Henri Nouwen's 365 daily thoughts are deep, insighful, and spiritually rich. The short daily half-pager meditations include ample quotes and verses from the Bible and are so effective that it makes one "see" a seemingly simple topic in a deeply spiritual and yet practical way.

Now I feel that, really, no Christian (Protestant, Orthodox, Roman-Catholic) will leave this banquet starving or unmotivated to be more Christ-like.

5 out of 5 stars Bread cast upon the waters.......2005-08-28

I was given "Bread For The Journey" at a particularly low point in my life and will personally attest to its restorative power. Henri Nouwen was the rare soul who wrote from a soul molded by the living heart of scripture and informed by compassionate hands-on caregiving.

BFTJ is a daily meditation guide that delves into the pith of religious experience from the Christian point of view. Nouwen's deep insights into the Eucharist are sometimes startling and far deeper than the warmed-over tripe often doled out by those of lesser spiritual prowess. But his gentle words always point with love toward healing the brokenness that is part and parcel of the human experience.

So fascinating are Nouwen's thoughts that one is tempted to wolf them down. But taken in small mouthfuls, chewed well and digested thoroughly, they can be healing to the mind and soul. They can also prepare the reader for properly receiving the Eucharist, not as a mere matter of habit, but as a healing ritual that connects to (and overcomes) one's own sinfulness, nourishing the spirit.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Meal.......2005-08-21

If are bodies are not fed we will die. In the same manner, if the spirituality of our being is not fed, it too will wither and fade. This book offers food for our spiritual journey in a way that makes one look forward to the meal and after partaking makes one fulfilled by the experience.

5 out of 5 stars Daily Bread.......2005-07-27

A book of daily meditations needs to give you something to think about, chew on, and ponder, throughout the rest of your day. Nouwen does this. His meditations are brief, and to the point. They cover many aspects of our daily journey to become more fully the children of God, emotional and physical, as well as spiritual. He invites you to think about who Jesus really said was your neighbor, for example. I began in June, and have not yet gone through the whole year, but I already know it is a book I will be able to use for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars Gentle, Profound Food for Faithul Living.......2005-04-02

I have read the works of the late Fr. Henry Nouwen off and on now for almost thirty years. His writings have been a source of enlightenment, education and comfort as I have made my journey through life.

While it had been a while since I hade read much by Nouwen, I began reading through this devotional this year, at the suggestion of a friend, and I have been not been disappointed. These short daily messages have been a source of deep inspiration encouragement and comfort to me and I am continually amazed at the deep and profound insight that Nouwen possessed about life and faith. I have and will continue to recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars I couldn't put it down for one minute.......2007-05-17

It was wintertime and I was speaking at a woman's conference in Charlottesville, VA. At my booktable aside from books I'd written, the church also had a few books they loved including this brand new, first book written by one of their church members who happened to be at this retreat. I bought GIRL MEETS GOD and took it to my hotel room and started reading it that night. I got hungry so I walked in the snow to a cool restaurant/pub and read the book at dinner under the little lamp at my table. I stayed at that table until the restaurant closed at 11pm because I couldn't stop reading, I was so absorbed in the story. I went back to my hotel room and finished the book by 3 in the morning. It was THAT good. I had the privilege of meeting Lauren Winner the next day at the conference. Needless to say I was a bit intimidated because I was such a fan. This was written better than any favorite fiction book I've read. If you want to cuddle up and enjoy a story, read GIRL MEETS GOD.

5 out of 5 stars Honest and impressive.......2007-05-07

GIRL MEETS GOD tells of Lauren Winner's Jewish upbringing, the Orthodox Judaism of her college years, and then her conversion to Christianity as a young adult. The sections and chapters of this book are organized by and named after both Jewish and Christian holidays. This memoir is partly a love story, with Jesus as the hero. It is partly a story of traditions, both Christian and Judaism. It is partly a story of community, and Lauren's love and respect for the people, both within in Judaism and Christianity, who shaped her spiritually.

I loved reading this. Lauren Winner is a very passionate woman, and when she writes about spirituality, family, friends, love, and books, her enthusiasm is all over the pages. She really brings the reader into her life, showing how her spirituality affects everything from her academic development to her thoughts on sexuality. I felt like she was my new friend, although a friend who is greatly more intelligent and academic than I am. I highly recommend this.

4 out of 5 stars To slog or not to slog..........2007-03-24

So there I was slogging through a young author's account of her conversion from Judaism to Christianity, complete with a multitude of "foreign" phrases that should have annoyed me, but...fascinated me. The insight Lauren Winner offers into the Jewish experience on her path to accepting Jesus is thought-provoking, such that I don't believe I'll ever read the Old Testament again without a deeper appreciation for the Jewish people and their culture. Okay, so I wasn't slogging...

2 out of 5 stars And she converted because.....?.......2007-03-14

For months I'd asked for this book at my local library; the clerk said it was constantly being renewed, or loaned out. The author is held in high regard among the younger intelligentsia in our shared Episcopal Church, so I hear her name checked in conversations with like minded people. Thus my excitement at obtaining the book and the earnestness of my review. The author and I share many traits, not the least of which is high emotional temperature/flair for theatrics, also propinquity of age. And she seemed to be the type of girl who could be my future wife. That helped, a little...

To her credit, the author writes lucid, at times compelling, prose, and knows her way around story arcs and cultural allusions. Her didactic artifice is far less successful. I was less interested in her conversion, from Reform, into, and out of, Orthodox Judaism than trying to understand why she ultimately chose Anglicanism. She just didn't give me a convincing rationale, unfortunately. Disturbingly, in a volume that purports to be about "something" substantial, even trying to find words in our language to describe, for example, "meeting" the God of Israel, the author displays the same sublimated cynicism and detachment from reality common to our generation. Her self-centeredness (when it's not "about" her, it's "about" her reactions to things she learns "about" herself from those around her) will not serve her will in her chosen discipline, religious studies, which requires empathy. Everyone except for her is a stereotype, even the "Sarahs who snubbed her", the Orthodox guys who wouldn't marry her because she's a convert, and even the "some man" she lacks the self-control to avoid having sex with (again? those details are superfluous, honey). She has the capability to be an effective spokesperson for our generation's desperately needed call to renewal, but if she just keeps on using her spiritual winnowing as a resume builder, her future students/readership would so easily be able to tell. We all aren't THAT obtuse!

Pity, I liked her better as a Jew (well she halachically still is, but I digress...). This is because she mirrors my affinity for Judaism (historico-moral significance and imperative, the "religious" aspect, if you will; far less the "cultural"). Reading her story reminds me that just because I lean so far off to left of post-modern Christianity, it doesn't equate that I'd eventually fall off into a life of running around Crown Heights screaming out, "Mazel Tov!".

I could actually still do this while remaining a Christian, but that is another matter entirely.

With her conversion to Christianity, she just lost that "spark", that specialness, I can't explain it. Sometimes when she would talk, it reminded me of my (long ago,as yet undegreed) college days when I was a Judaic Studies major in Boca (of all places). There was this girl who went to a Messianic synagogue in one of my classes and I thought to myself, "finally, a (not unattractive) girl who could talk intelligently about our desire to live as the first Christians (all Orthodox Palestinian Jews, as if we forgot...oh wait, we did) lived and thought." Well, she turned about to be "just" another gentile, like me. How disappointing! I paused several times reading this book, as if to say, "Aha, Lauren Winner seems like she's trying to be something she's not, a gentile". Like ships passing in the night, she and I.

The fact that I have a call to (what I naturally assumed was the Episcopal) ministry complicates my relationship to the ideas expressed in this book. The author, to my chagrin, immediately subsumed some of the WORST traits of our people (clannish behavior, pretense of ecumenism, over-reliance on the Prayer Book - I'll never forget the college professor who, upon hearing an obscure cite on my part, said, "An Episcopalian that KNOWS the BIBLE?") and so on. And I would let the author know that I have suffered much for the Episcopalian cause from other Christians (that I'm "pagan" b/c I read my prayers out of a book, "Every time your church is in the headlines, it's only because of something 'controversial', etc). I would suggest that the author can't just take, take, take, from Anglicanism without, too, defending it.

She seems far too deferential to evangelical Christians, and their "poise" and assurance of ownership. This I found troubling.

Her "Jewess at the foot of the cross" persona I found distasteful.

If I didn't care about her and the subject matter, I might suggest that writing a "memoir" in your twenties is silly, nay, capricious and arbitrary.

A seeming defense of the ultra-evangelical wing of the Episcopal Church (even with all she knows, and don't worry, she'll remind you every two pages) is what finally put the mechitza between us. As someone who is stuck in a diocese that is increasingly tilted towards a reactionary "low church"/conservative evangelical theology and clergy, I can say that it's not all romance and fighting for the "purity" of the faith. In fact, this polarization is the main reason the Episcopal Church and I are on the outs.

Because among other things, the local priest implied I was too liberal...too "Jewish". "You must bring your practice in line with those of the church". That being said, the only way I could see the author outdoing even herself, is to discover she has a call to the priesthood (like her "rescue fantasy" you learn about in the book, she also flirts with this idea, too) and she ends up teaching at the same seminary where I might eventually study for the ministry. No, I think that may actually happen, knowing our affinities.

Pair this up with "A Jew Examines Christianity" by Rachel Zurer (it's scarce, try interlibrary loan) for a more nuanced approach to some of the theological/"parting of the ways" pining the author insists on doing.

I think she is trying not to convince herself, in her words, "This Christianity thing isn't working". Maybe some of the syntax of the book wouldn't seem so hysterical if she proffered to be more stable.

You should read this book. But as for me, I ask, UCC, have you any room at the inn?

Hope you got something out of this.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful and educational.......2006-04-20

This book was excellent, despite it's slightly cheesy title. Winner is smart, witty, and incredibly honest about her spiritual journey. I learned so much about Judaism, and definitely thought about my own Christian faith. This book is refreshing and thought-provoking in its honesty and intellectualism.

At a time when conflicts among three of the world's major religions--Islam, Judaism, and Christianity--are in the global spotlight, Bruce Feiler offers a stunning biography of the one man who unites all three religions: Abraham. "The most mesmerizing story of Abraham's life--his offering a son to God--plays a pivotal role in the holiest week of the Christian year, at Easter," writes Feiler. "The story is recited at the start of the holiest fortnight in Judaism, on Rosh Hashanah. The episode inspires the holiest day in Islam, 'Id al-Adha,' the Feast of the Sacrifice, at the climax of the Pilgrimage. And yet the religions can't even agree on which son he tried to kill." Herein lies the irony and perfection of Feiler's timing. As we struggle to find a path to peace among these three religions, all warring in Jerusalem, near the stone where Abraham brought his son for sacrifice, this captivating biography speaks to Abraham as the metaphor he is: the historically elusive man who embodies three religions, a character who has shape-shifted over the millennia to serve the clashing goals and dogma of each religion.

Anyone seeking to understand the roots of tension in the Middle East need look no further than the final half of this book, where Feiler interprets the meaning of Abraham as seen through the prism of each religion. Surprisingly, the book is as entertaining as it is thoughtful: Feiler is a masterful writer with a warm, humorous voice, a dazzling way with metaphors, and an underlying intelligence that comes through in every passage. Abraham deserves the highest of recommendations. --Gail Hudson

Provocative and uplifting, Abraham offers a thoughtful and inspiring vision of unity that redefines what we think about our neighbors, our future, and ourselves.

3 out of 5 stars Lost.......2007-07-31

Feiler makes some very interesting points about how Islam, Christianity, and Judaism have all come to claim Abraham as their own patriarch. But since I am not a biblical scholar, I found it difficult to follow much of the book.

1 out of 5 stars Playing bible games with Abraham.......2007-02-14

Saying that Abraham reconciles the three religions is like saying Adam reconciles special creation and evolution. Unfortunately, for Feiler, those who deny that Jesus is Messiah, God, eternally separate themselves from the christian faith. Jews and Muslims can only be reconciled to Jesus by accepting Jesus as Savior and Lord, not by playing games with Abraham.

3 out of 5 stars Good but I like Feiler's other 2 books more.......2007-01-20

"Abraham" is an interesting and well-written book, but it seemed to me that Feiler has the shadow of 9/11 hanging a bit too darkly over it. Perhaps because of its more specific topic -- Abraham -- it's also a less expansive work in some ways than either "Walking the Bible" or "Where God was Born." Worth reading, but I didn't find it as good as "Walking the Bible" or "Where God was Born."

3 out of 5 stars An interesting quick read.......2006-10-02

How do you write a 226-page book covering someone whom we have very little historical knowledge about? Put a lot of space between the lines, and fill in the gaps with long, superfluous descriptions of what the weather was like the day you were doing your research, and you can stretch it out to 226 pages. Yes, the content of this book is quite thin, stretched out to needless length. But fortunately, it's an easy read, so it goes fast even though you do have to wade through some of those verbose setting-the-mood descriptions.

I ended up reading this book through a book group discussion. I work at a Fortune 500 company that has a diversity committee, like most big corporations, but usually such groups tend to focus only on race, gender, and sexual orientation issues. At my company, they also include other types of diversity, such as generational differences and religion. This book was a perfect choice for such an environment because Abraham is an important figure in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, so people of all three of these major world religions could find something in the book for them.

I found it quite interesting how the three religions have developed views of Abraham that are quite divergent, even though they all have the same historical writing about just a few incidents in his life. The most surprising view to me was the Jewish interpretation of Abraham in the Middle Ages, which according to this author, had become similar to Christ: "Abraham had become a savior, a celestial figure who embodies divinity on earth, represents humans in the afterlife, and contains, in the deeds of his life, the scripture of God's intention. The Jewish notion of Abraham had become remarkably similar to the Christian notion of Jesus, in which Christ is the logos, the word and the law." He also states this view of the period: "Abraham may not have died at all; worms did not destroy his body once it was placed in the ground."

Overall, the author's take is that these religions have made the meaning of Abraham's life into whatever the religions needed to make him important to their beliefs. It certainly was interesting to see how the interpretation of Abraham's life has changed throughout time and by each religion. If you'd like an easy read about three religions' views of Abraham, this book can be a good overview.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting Read.......2006-01-24

As a Christian I am interested in the phenomenon of Abraham as the progenitor of three of the main religions on earth. Of particular interest was the portrayal of this character through the lenses of the two other belief systems that I am not so familiar with. In an easy to read format this is at once a book for the curious without the need for serious scholarship, and will therefore be appealing to a wide readership. Coupled with this is the current apetite throughout the world to understand better the problems of the middle-east and also the clarion-call for religious tolerance and reconciliation. All of this may be found in this book which will therefore guarantee its success as a money spinner.

What I find disturbing is the tendency of the writer not so much to find the truth of Abraham, but how to reconcile the different faiths. There is the overarching but unwritten goal to find the common ground by which these three religions may be reconciled. It reminds me of the saying "peace at any price is too high a price" It seems to me to beg the question "is the reconciling of differences really worth the sacrifice of truth?"
It seems never to enter the writers mind that actually one of the faiths representation of Abraham might actally be true as an historical fact and therefore is a sound basis for faith.

The book never seriously offers Abraham as the embodiment of a life lived by the truth, and that to agree with a fabrication in the name of tolerance is actually to undermine the basis for living in harmony.

Abraham as understood through the various "manipulations" of each of the different faiths theologians over a long period seems as far as I am aware to be represented fairly and without bias by Feiler, but to say that Feiler doesn't have any presuppositions or is indeed a neutral seeker of truth is a far different thing. In the end I have to say that what is tacitly ignored in this book is the fact that truth by its very nature is exclusive, but that is not a popular thought in todays pluralistic and relativistic culture. Not to explore the possibility that actually one of those views of Abraham is true and the other two false is a serious flaw in his work, but completely understandable, given todays religious climate.

All in all well worth the read but disapointing in seeing the pervasiveness of the modern maxims in yet another author, move over Dan Brown :
a) God is a construct of theologians.
b)There is no such thing as absolute truth.
C)Tolerance is more important than truth.
d)To defer to tolerance is a guarantee of neutrality.
e)To be intolerant of misbeliefs is to be bigoted.
f)History is dependent on the flavour of todays revisionists.

Book Description

Beloved friend,

When this little book was first published many years ago, it became a beacon of light for many people who found themselves time and time again in one valley or another. Valleys are nothing new for any of us. Some of you may be in a valley right now, or, since you never know what's around the corner, you may be on the brink of tottering into yet another valley. Or maybe you've just survived a valley that you swear you'll never revisit -- but guess what? That's precisely the valley you'll probably see again. And again.

Being in a valley can be a lonely and bewildering experience. This book was written to help you feel less lonely by reminding you that you really aren't ever alone since God is always by your side, but more important, you are always by your own side. No matter how dire the situation may seem, no matter how dark and bleak the valley may be, you have all you need within you to survive the valley -- any valley. Even though you may not know how you got into the valley in the first place, you do know, deep inside yourself, how to get through and out and free. You just need a little faith in yourself and a little guidance to find that faith within yourself.

When you are at your wit's end, take this little book and let it guide you toward the ever-present but often elusive light at the end of the tunnel. Faith in the Valley is designed to help you find the light when you need it most -- when you're in that damn tunnel. When you're most confused and in the dark and clueless as to how you got there (again!) and when you're trying to figure out not just how to get out, but stay out. For good.

Faith in the Valley has helped so many through so much that we felt it only fitting to issue this lovely gift edition to acknowledge the special place it holds in many hearts. Please share it with a friend who has served as your beacon in the past, or offer it to yourself as a reminder of the strength and wisdom you possess and can offer to others.

5 out of 5 stars GET THIS and GIVE THIS to your favorite women:).......2004-07-06

This is my FAVORITE book by Iyanla Vanzant because of: It's size(small enough for your tiny purse), its lack of preach-i-ness and how the index is organized by subject. I feel its a synopsis of all the subjects covered in her other books. I also feel the book is applicable to women of ALL cultures. You can use it as a daily guide or you can use the index to find a subject for which you could use guidance.

5 out of 5 stars A great book for daily reflection.......2002-10-22

I can not express how insightful and helpful this book is! It really makes you look deep into the reason(s) why you thought you needed a book of affirmations in the first place. This book is perfect for those "why me" and "I really can't take any more" moments when you feel like life, and everything in it, needs to give you a break. If you're a woman experiencing a lot of change in your life and it seems like you just can't handle another crisis (or is it a crisis afterall?), this is the book for you. I carry it in my purse!

5 out of 5 stars Touches a Point.......2002-07-30

Each time my spirt is down, or I'm going through a situation, I turn to this book. I hold the book in my right hand by its spine, fan the pages with my left hand to stop at randum. The passages I've read, I have felt its deep spirtual feeling and I understand its meaning. Then I reflect on my situation and the passage fits. It helps me to understanding whats going on. It uplifts my spirit to deal with my situation. It give me insight to view my problem from a different angle. It also assures me that what I am currently going through will end. I will get through it. In my view, its a powerfull book. I have read several other books by Iyanla, even watched her talk show (sorry that went off the air), but like the bible, I keep Faith In The Valley near by.

Faith In The valley by Iyanla Vanzant is truly a book to help us on our journey toward peace. Ms. Vanzant imparts words of wisdom and encouragement. She is reminding us of some of the day to day things we take for granted. We sometimes forget to be thankful for what we have; good health, a job and a place to live. You will not regret reading this book. As Ms. vanzant writes, "What a blessing! I am so thankful" that I read this book. Go get yourself a copy of "Faith in The valley".
