4 out of 5 stars Another enjoyable story.......2007-05-30

I really like the Mrs. Jeffries mysteries. I care about the people that I've come to know at Upper Edmonton Gardens. I wouldn't miss a single book from this enjoyable series. In this book we have another murder victim that is not liked by anyone, and the list of possible suspects is endless. But never fear out intrepid crew will uncover all. These books are a great escape from the everyday. I find that they have been getting a little stronger in the plot lines with each additional book, and the characters are truly wonderful. I recommend these books highly.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good........2007-05-28

A good Mrs. Jeffries book although I did guess the identity of the murderer sooner than most of the Mrs. Jeffries books. But there's another twist that makes me wonder where the series is going next. And the Inspector seems to be coming into his own in this book. He's always been a good person, now he's developing more backbone which is good to see. It's an important book for fans of the series to read.

5 out of 5 stars Surprised.......2007-05-27

This series has been described by another individual as "cozy." I confess to having read them after ordering for another. I found them to be great "stress reducers" if you will allow me that. This series has been like some old time TV shows, e.g. very predictable, but you just fell in love with the characters who crossed Victorian class boundries and became a "family" in the best sense of the term to serve justice. I may be wrong, but I think Mrs. Jeffries, et. al. pre-dated Sherlock Holmes if you follow time lines. I even ignored the fact that the author frequently used vernacular terms such as "cuppa" and "suss" that did not appear in the English language (either side of the Atlantic) until the 1930's and 1960's.
It sounded "British" much like our chimney sweep friend from Mary Poppins so it was O.K. BUT, Surprise is one descriptor for this latest in the series and begs a few questions. There is a bit of a change in writing style to begin with, but by the time you are finished with this tome
you are wondering what is going to happen next and to the "family" that you have learned to appreciate not just for the characters, but the qualities they possess. I, who read this series as a bit of a lark to get away from academic reading, etc., am looking forward to the next in the series! BTW, I don't know why anyone placed a "tag" for "nyc murder mystery 1900" but it would be better to have "London murder mystery circa 1880's" (Victorian) I believe.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2007-05-16

Another fantastic installment in the Mrs. Jeffries series.

What is great about these books is that despite how many there are in the series, they never become formulaic and predictable. Brightwell always finds a way to include unique situations and details to make each book special. This book is no exception. For example: somebody is following the household staff as they make their inquiries. Is the odious Inspector Nivens finally closing in on the household's secret? Also, there is an undercurrent of tension throughout the book as Betsy frets about her upcoming wedding to Smythe. Despite the household trying to reassure her, Betsy is on edge. And here's something else that sets this book apart from the rest in the series - it ends with a substantial cliffhanger.

This book is a must read for all Mrs. Jeffries fans and all fans of cozy historical mysteries.

5 out of 5 stars Well Done Cozy Mystery.......2007-05-11

Nobody is terribly upset when someone murders banker Lawrence Boyd - he had many enemies and no friends. The murderer tried to cover up the murder by setting fire to the studio where Boyd was painting, but the police quickly catch on and Inspector Gerald Witherspoon is assigned the case. There are a lot of suspects and it will take time to question them all, but Witherspoon needs to solve the case fast because his rival, Inspector Nigel Nivens, will do anything to discredit him. Luckily Witherspoon has some help - unbeknownst to him his household staff, led by his housekeeper Mrs. Jeffries, have helped him solve cases in the past and are eager to work on this one, especially since it will take maid Betsy's mind off her upcoming wedding to coachman Smythe. But the staff needs to be very cautious as they investigate this one - not only do they not want Witherspoon to catch on to what they are doing, but someone is following footman Wiggins as he investigates and they are afraid that someone even higher up in the police department will realize that Witherspoon is not solving these murder cases alone.

"Mrs. Jeffries and The Best Laid Plans" is another delightful entry in a cozy mystery series that never disappoints. One of the things that make this series so good is the characters and they are at their best in this book. You can just picture Mrs. Jeffries, Mrs. Goodge, Wiggins, Betsy, and Smythe sitting around the table talking to the wonderfully eccentric American Luty and her butler Hatchet who also help solve the cases. While Witherspoon remains blissfully unaware that his staff is helping him, he is hardly a buffoon and uncovers several useful clues himself. He has a wonderful scene in this book when he confronts Nivens and shows some real backbone. Constable Barnes, his partner, is also well written, fully aware that the staff is helping solve the case, he is happy to pass clues their way. The mystery is set in Victorian England and author Emily Brightwell does a perfect job in capturing that time period and bits of that era are weaved throughout the book like when Witherspoon is amazed by someone using a typewriter. The mystery itself is well written and well plotted with plenty of suspects and red herrings. Careful readers will figure out the murderer at the same time that Mrs. Jeffries does which is very clever writing on Brightwell's part.

Longtime readers of the series may be surprised and a bit disappointed by something that happens at the end of the book. Now I can't wait until the next book comes out in October to find out what happens next.

The latest from the indefatigable Sheldon is full of manipulators, dirty dealers, and dastardly rascals, all snatching at power--political, financial, sexual, or all the above; in other words, business as usual in Sidney's World. The Best Laid Plans begins with the meeting and mating of Oliver Russell, a promising young attorney-cum-gubernatorial candidate, and Leslie Stewart, the beautiful go-getter who is running his public relations campaign. Just as the pair is about to be wed, Russell's mentor, Senator Todd Davis, offers him a deal he can't refuse: marry my daughter and I will make you president. Russell accepts and Stewart vows revenge. The lion's share of The Best Laid Plans revolves around the young pol's rise to power and Stewart's byzantine plotting to bring him to grief. Russell gives his phony wife plenty of opportunities because, like every fictional president (and some real ones), Russell has an unruly libido. Reading this book is like waiting for a train wreck, bracing for the inevitable collision; but to Sheldon's credit, the titanic scandal that ends the novel is not quite what you expect...

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-08-27

I'm a Sidney Sheldon's fan but I was so disappointed with this book. It is so full of contradictions. The characters' actions are illogical. Leslie is supposed to an extremely intelligent woman who has built a press empire for herself (with the help of her husband's money), yet, she makes all important decisions with the aid of an astrologer. She wants revenges but she would not give Oliver Russell any bad press when she had the chance and he wasn't so powerful. Who would want to wait for the guy to become president before trying to bring him down? In the end, she was described as a stupid b**** who just wasted all her time and money to turn reputable publications into cheap tabloids, how did she build an empire being this stupid?

4 out of 5 stars The Best Laid Plot!.......2007-03-10

What an adventure this story was. My heart was pounding at the end when all the action was unfolding. I guessed the villain about three quarters of the way through the story, but that didn't make it any less thrilling. Sidney Sheldon was a master of the arts and this book is just a small example of his talent. It is my first experience reading his works, but I guarantee it won't be my last. The story revolves around several plots, but the basis of the plot is "hell hath no fury like a woman scorned." The woman, in this case, is Leslie Stewart and the man is Oliver Russell, Governor of Kentucky and then later on, President of the United States. Leslie is out to get her revenge for being "left at the altar" and Oliver gives her plenty of ammunition to use against him. The tale twists and turns over the ensuing years, with many characters supporting both parties to get them to the top of their respective careers just for Leslie to bring Russell crashing down at the pinnacle of his term. Sheldon takes us through a journey of the terrible affect of the war in Sarajevo as he introduces first rate television and news reporter, Dana Evans. We also get an insight as to the corruptive and manipulative tactics of the world of politics. Through the eyes of Senator Todd Davis and assistant to the President, Peter Tager, we see what strides are made to protect the office of the most powerful man of our nation.

4 out of 5 stars Nothing Like A Woman Scorned!.......2007-03-05

This is a very quick, easy, and fun read for those looking for light entertainment and an escape from reality for a few hours! This is a book that can help pass the time while traveling or on vacation as well.

Nice storyline, that captures your attention at the start of this novel and holds it through the end of this novel. Take one smart advertising executive, Leslie Stewart, with an IQ that places her in the genius category and one suave, ladies man, attorney Oliver Russell, whom is running for governor of Kentucky. The two meet when the advertising firm Leslie Stewart works for decides to do pro bono work in order to help Oliver Russell in his run for Governor of Kentucky. Stewart & Russell fall in love quickly and become engaged to be married. Shortly before they are to be married, Russell flies to Paris on business and marries his former girlfriend. Stewart reads about the marriage in the local paper and is crushed although she takes the news in stride.

From that day forward Stewart vows to take revenge on Russell for breaking her heart. But in a cruel twist of fate, even the best laid plans don't always guarantee the desired outcome and can back fire!

4 out of 5 stars There's nothing like a women scorned...........2006-01-20

Sometimes a person gets so focused on revenge that they do not realize that the only person they are really hurting is themself. That is what happens to Leslie Stewart when she decides to take down Oliver Russell, the President of the United States. Leslie was suppose to have married Oliver when he was an Attorney in Kentucky. Fortunately he marries the daughter of US Senator and becomes the Governor of Kentucky and then the President of the United States. Leslie cannot forget the humiliation of being dumped so she plots a revenge against Oliver. Meanwhile, a couple of young girls have been found murdered while using Ecstasy and the girls are somehow linked to Oliver. Leslie who recalls Oliver trying to persuade her to use Ecstasy when they were dating begins to think that this might be her big break in her quest to bring down Oliver. But is she on the right track? Read the book and find out. You will also meet Dana Evans, a star reporter for the Washington Tribune which is owned by Leslie. Dana will be key character in exposing the truth. You can also read more about Dana in Sidney Sheldon's "The Sky is Falling".

I read "Best Laid Plans" when it first came out and it changed my life. I used to worry about not having enough money, not being able to buy a house, etc etc. I have followed Browne's advice and now have a comfortable nest egg. More importantly, when the stock market has dropped dramatically, or the events of September 11 caused worry, I slept well with regard to my finances. Safety, Safety, Safety. I know people who are now seeing therapists in an effort to get over their stock market losses, Actually, my portfolio dropped, to, but not all that much because I followed the rules of diversification that Browne advocates.

Read this book. It will change your life.

Book Description

The Yellow Brick Road Gang, otherwise known as Metaphysical Misadventures in the Search for Enlightenment, was once just a book club. Now, they are a circle of friends as close as family. Together they embarked on a spiritual search -- and throughout the last eight years each woman has come to realize that the only constant is change and that anything is possible. Cristine and her partner have always approached their relationship like a business, and Cristine prides herself on her cool-headed and logical thinking. But when Cristine's partner decides he doesn't want to renew their relationship contract, Cristine is devastated. Trying to help her, the Yellow Brick Road Gang devises a ritual to bring Cristine a new lover: Mix cayenne pepper for hot passion and dried mustard for strength, add a tiny bit of mint for sweetness, then cast into a fire.Enter Daniel Burns. He is no ordinary man. In fact, he isn't a man at all...

Cristine is on top of the world until she comes home to find out her significant other, Charlie, wants out of their relationship after seven years. Instantly, depression claims her to the point that her best friends, the Yellow Brick Road Gang, send her on a vacation to heal that ends in comedic disaster. Just when it seems things can't get worse, Cristine has some sort of epiphany, and shortly thereafter, Daniel Burns walks into her life. He seems to be her dream man, making everything turn out well in her world. The only problem is he is not a man, but something like a space alien or angel, an energy being, who says Cristine is part of some cosmic plan.

*** Though a little too New Agey at times, the insights to forgiveness Daniel gives Claire are wonderfully stated. This story reminds me of the movie Starman in some ways. It takes a long time for the plot to swing into action; for about a third of the book, it reads more like women's fiction or chick lit than fantasy, but the combination of genres basically works. ***

I am a long time fan of Constance O'Day Flannery. My favorites are her time travel novels, but I have also enjoyed her newer ones. This book, however, just did not match up to her past works. The plot is too out there for me! The women's Yellow Brick Road gang is too contrived. She can do better

1 out of 5 stars I didn't like it!!!!!!!.......2006-07-13

This is waaaaay off of her usual books. I just couldn't get into it at all. I only read about one third of it. Sorry, Ms. Flannery.

They met seven years ago and within three months Charlie and Cristine moved in together. Now he says the contract between them expired and he is leaving her for someone else he recently met. Upset as she thought they would move on to the next relationship plane, Cristine turns to her friends at The Yellow Brick Road Gang. The crew decides that their heartbroken member needs a fling with no lasting commitments beyond the one night so they begin a ritual to bring a throwaway hunk to Cristine.

Her fun fling frolic turns into a terrible tramatic twist when she hurts her back dancing with strange lights. However, when the lights appear in her kitchen in human form, she is not frightened at all. Daniel Burns explains her soul called out to his across dimensions; he felt he had to come especially since he believes she is one of the women who is humanity's last chance to be saved.

The first Guardian tale is a terific fantasy romance starring a delightful hunk from another plane and the woman whose soul brought him to earth. The story line is fast-paced, but clearly driven by the lead couple and a strong support team, mostly the Yellow Brick Road Gang, experts in metaphysical mishaps. Fans who want something different will enjoy this deeply spiritual tale that casts a spell on the audience starting with pepper, mustard and mint and ending with love.

    3 out of 5 stars A cute classic from a much-loved author.......2007-06-24

This book had an interesting setting: construction of a luxury hotel in the middle of the desert. The architect and the chief engineer were at odds through most of the story, and I liked how they slowly came to appreciate the other. The second half had an exciting injection of action/adventure to balance the relationship aspect and the artistic details of the setting.

3 out of 5 stars Just an OK Book.......2005-05-10

BEST LAID PLANS is the sequel to Loving Jack, an ok story, but not one of Nora Roberts' best.

Abra Wilson was not impressed with Cody's building design, in fact she thought it was impractical. Cody Johnson thought Abra had style, but was very distracting for an engineer. Sparks ignited in the desert building site, and then passion soon followed. But was it enough to stop someone from trying to destroy their first project together? Would they be able to find out who it is before any more damage is done?

This is a decent book, but not one of Roberts' finest. BEST LAID PLANS is a feel good romance, with few twists and is very predictable. Boy meets girl, they fall in love, struggle with that love, then live happily-ever-after. However, since this is a book by Nora Roberts, it's definitely worth reading!!

    5 out of 5 stars What a great story!.......2003-12-28

I think I liked "Best Laid Plans" as much as "Loving Jack." And seeing as they came as a set in "Love By Design"..it was the perfect book to cozy up with. Abra is a headstrong woman who won't bend for any man...until she meets Cody Johnson. Two thumbs up for Nora!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Sequel To "Loving Jack".......2002-03-05

Structural engineer Abra Wilson meets architect Cody Johnson and disagrees with his plans for the new resort they are both employed to build. They fall in love and learn respect for each other's abilities. The characters from "Loving Jack" pay a visit and it is fun to see them again. There is an exciting subplot about unscrupulous bosses and substandard building materials.
Excerpt from the back of the book:
"When Cody Johnson first caught sight of structural engineer Abra Wilson, he thought of endless possibilities. She had style and confidence-and was distracting as hell. She'd called his design an impractical piece of fancy, but then he'd always preferred frankness to subtleties.
Abra had met men like Cody before. They usually thought they could smile their way out of trouble, and this overconfident East Coast architect was no exception. She'd told him to back off, but he wasn't listening.
Friction was inevitable, but when sparks turned to flames of passion, could either of them take the heat?"

just read this book last night...it's a very quick read, pretty short. anyway...this book is pretty cute, weyland sure is a likable character, and cat is your untypical regency character. the romance was slow to come which is nice...but i can't say i really liked how cat came onto him and not the other way around so much. also there was pretty much no sensuality in this novel, which was surprising. it would have been more fun with that ;) that's why i took away a star. ah, also the ending seemed really rushed...

Her love interest one is easily fond of right away because he is SO charming a character! It is an extremely funny book and very romantic! Both of the main characters have these little quirks that just match up with each other very well.
Catherine has a list of eligable men to get married to. Unfortunatley when she meets up with Jack, he is not on her list. So, she pushes aside whatever attraction she has for him, goes along with her plans.
Luckily, it's not so easily put aside. Jack lives close to where she's staying at her cousin's house. Jack is attracted to Catherine, but has the ability to hide it and does so as much as possible because he has an astute sense of pride and dignity.
Catherine, though into clothes, remains a practical character who would not shy away from lifting up her skirts way past the ankle to prevent it from dragging in the mud or water.
The two principle characters also engage is an almost, unwittingly, flirtatious banter which grows increasingly heated as the story goes on and their attraction to each other increases! :

"'She is too young.' [Catherine says]
'She is old enough, it seems.'
    'Not for you.'
'What? You would have me bowlegged and gray at eight and twenty?'
'Do not be absurd. It is your age relative to hers.'
'And I suppose your own age is of no consequence.'
Cat straightened her shoulders. 'I am two and twenty.'
    'I now see.'
'Do not attempt to make fun of me, Lord Weyland. Miss Millington is eighteen at most and very inexperienced. I am quite different, and well you know it.'
His eyes narrowed slightly. 'Do I?'
'If you do not, then you have not the perception I thought you possesed.'
'And if YOU are wrong about my perception, might that say something of your own discernment?'
Cat drew a shaky breath. The man was driving her quite mad. He stood so close, and stared at her in such a way, and persisted in bandying words with her, when all she wanted from him was to assist her to mount her horse!
She wanted nothing more of him. Surely, she did not."

One of my favorite moments is when Jack (Lord Weyland) has to take Catherine across the river or stream, whatever it was . . . On his horse and it's a hard path to negotiate. Catherine has to sit in front of him. Throughout the entire incident, Jack desparatley to concentrate on his task, but Catherine's closeness was very distracting. It is so funny to visualize, which the author gives just the right amount of info so it is possible, Jack fighting his . . . *ahem* manly urges:

"Miss D' Eauville reached down and grasped a handful of her skirt, gathered it safely above the rising water, and pressed against Jack as she did so. Her action was completely unselfconscious and wholly practical.
Jack smiled grimly to himself. When one carried a woman on one's horse with her ankles on display and her most enticing form pressed against one, one dreamed of circumstances considerably different than those Miss D' Eauville presented. As it was, his fancy was rapidly outstripping his sense.
Clinging to logic as a dog clings to a bone, he spoke. 'I admit to puzzlement. I cannot see how you can make me seem more ridiculous than I do now. My boots are soaked, my kerchief is askew, and Lord Johnston will likely shoot me in a jealous rage.'
'I should not think it ridiculous to be shot.'
    'There is comfort, at least.'"

3 out of 5 stars New author, decent story.......2003-11-10

American heiress Catherine D'Eauville has come to England with one goal in mind: to marry a titled gentleman, preferably an earl. After all, it is her father's wish. The first man she comes across is Lord Weyland who, unfortunately, is not on her list. (Literally, Catherine constantly consults something she refers to as "The List") After all, Lord Weyland is a mere baron... AND he is rich. For her own reasons, Catherine would prefer to marry a poor English gentleman.

Unfortunately, she finds herself attracted to Lord Weyland, who seems agreeable in every way. And the bookish Weyland is also intrigued by the headstrong American... even though he has no desire to marry. As Catherine sorts through her many suitors, Lord Weyland offers his advice. It takes awhile for them to realize that her best match doesn't necessarily meet all of her criteria.

The first chapter of the novel is witty and promising... but some parts did fall somewhat flat. The book had an interesting premise, and it WAS good. But not great. Sometimes, Catherine was plucky and humorous. Other times, she seemed rash and self-centered. I liked Lord Weyland, but his behavior toward the novel's left me somewhat disappointed. But there were also things to admire about the novel. Catherine's plump cousin, Becky, was a refreshing character--I would have liked to see more of her (I felt like she was slighted). Also, there are a couple of interesting surprises.

Ultimately, I'll be looking forward to seeing more of Laurie Bishop. She definitely has potential.

    4 out of 5 stars A Very Good Read.......2006-09-05

I have read a lot of mysteries and for a debut mystery novel this was quite engaging. The protagonist--Jessie Schroeder, who lives in the small town of Riverport--asked herself and others all of the questions surrounding mysterious events that I found myself asking; she did not leave me annoyed with her as a amature sleuth for not asking things that she should have asked. Jessie is real and her inquisitiveness was based upon an intelligent human being living in a small American town. All of the characters in this novel had substance and you came to know each of them well enough to formulate your own opinion about "who done it." I look forward to reading another exciting episode in Jessie Schroeder's life.

    5 out of 5 stars GET COZY!.......2006-08-07

A well-written, deftly plotted story filled with interesting characters. Hope this is only the first in a series of Jessie Schroeder's adventures in Riverport!

When her husband dumps her for one of his graduate students after many years of marriage, Jessie Schroeder returns to her hometown of Riverport, Missouri to lick her wounds and make a new life for herself. After months of writer's block , her muse returns as she begins to create the next tale in her children's series "Emily Says ...". She even hopes that Sheriff Gil Keller asks her out, a welcome change from fearing he would.

The era of good feelings does not last very long when Jessie's gardener Willy Bachmann is accused of killing Margaret Benson, wife of a conman and backer of a controversial industrial park development that hinges on a highway extension through the town. After joining AA and becoming a born again Christian, Jesse believes that Willy could not harm anyone. Not long afterward Willy is found dead; apparently he drowned in a flash flood.. The autopsy reveals he had a high alcohol content in his system. Jessie believes someone is getting away with two murders and used Willie as the most believable fall guy.

THE BEST LAID PLANS is an enjoyable amateur sleuth tale that gives readers an opportunity to see what it is like to live in a small Missouri town where everyone knows everyone. Some locals believe the heroine is plain rude because of her loyal obstinacy to her beliefs that she can read a person's inner traits; readers will consider her as a charming eccentric. Janet Majerus provides audience with a wonderful regional mystery.

    4 out of 5 stars Good Chemistry.......2002-03-19

Miss Melpomene Fiske is left in the care of her greedy aunt who is planning on marrying her off to the odious Frederick. Pommy, never one to accept her fate silently, decides to escape through the window and while attempting to climb down the vine next to her window, she falls down and is caught red-handed by a very drunk Lord Justin Harcourt.

Justin is engaged to marry a woman of his nightmares and his attraction to Pommy serves nothing but to complicate matters. He feels responsible for her being - or is that just an excuse he is telling himself for seeing her?

Overall, this is a good read. The characters are likeable and well-written and the chemistry between them is almost palpable.
