Book Description

Another defining moment in the evolution of operating systems
Small footprint operating systems, such as those driving the handheld devices that the baby dinosaurs are using on the cover, are just one of the cutting-edge applications you'll find in Silberschatz, Galvin, and Gagne's Operating System Concepts, Seventh Edition.
By staying current, remaining relevant, and adapting to emerging course needs, this market-leading text has continued to define the operating systems course. This Seventh Edition not only presents the latest and most relevant systems, it also digs deeper to uncover those fundamental concepts that have remained constant throughout the evolution of today's operation systems. With this strong conceptual foundation in place, students can more easily understand the details related to specific systems.
New Adaptations
* Increased coverage of user perspective in Chapter 1.
* Increased coverage of OS design throughout.
* A new chapter on real-time and embedded systems (Chapter 19).
* A new chapter on multimedia (Chapter 20).
* Additional coverage of security and protection.
* Additional coverage of distributed programming.
* New exercises at the end of each chapter.
* New programming exercises and projects at the end of each chapter.
* New student-focused pedagogy and a new two-color design to enhance the learning process.

3 out of 5 stars Informative, but very, very dry.............2007-09-16

This book is very informative if your interested in learning how operating systems work. Unfortunately, Im not really interested in it, I just have to read it for a required class. The material is very dry so its hard to focus on what your reading.

3 out of 5 stars Not a very good one.......2007-03-11

I had to buy it for the course, but I really prefer Tanenbaum books, you can find more science. Pages reflect light so you should have indirect lighting, I had difficulties reading it.

4 out of 5 stars Good as a Textbook.......2007-01-13

This was a required text for a college class. As a beginner in understanding how operating systems are created the first few chapters were easy to read and understand, but after that I needed the professor to be able to understand the concepts.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2006-10-21

We had to buy this book as part of our undergraduate Computer Engineering curriculum at The University of Akron. The book is very well written; I taught myself a lot by studying it.

This book was so good that I actually ended up telling one of my friends in Computer Engineering at Case about it, only to find out that 1) they use it there, too, and that 2) he thinks just as highly of the text.

3 out of 5 stars Try reading 3 pages without falling asleep.......2006-03-05

While "Operating Systems" is not exactly the sexiest subject in Computer Science, it ought to be possible to make it interesting, for example by taking a historical or problem solving approach.

Sadly, Silverschatz does none of this; in fact, often his book reads more like a tome on tax-law. Take this sentence, for example:

"If no process is executing in its critical section and some processes wish to enter their critical sections, then only those processes that are not executing in their remainder sections can participate in the decision on which will enter its critical section next, and this selection cannot be postponed indefinitely." (p.194, 7th ed.)

Silberschatz also has a tendency to make sweeping statements without giving examples, like what I am doing here. Admittedly, online chapters for different operating systems are available, but I think more examples within the main text itself would have helped to explain the concepts better.

The book also contains errors. For example it says that, "For instance, suppose that the queue usually has just one outstanding request. Then, all scheduling algorithms behave the same, because they have only one choice for where to move the disk head: They all behave like FCFS scheduling." (p.461, 7th ed.) While this is true for shortest-seek-time-first, LOOK and C-LOOK algorithms, it is wrong for SCAN and C-SCAN. They would continue moving the HD head from cylinder 0 to cylinder max, with worse performance than SSTF.

Since I do not have wide experience with other O/S books, I will not give a categorically "don't buy it!" recommendation. After all, Silberschatz is quite comprehensive and could be okay as a reference book. However, if you require a book to teach you O/S concepts, I would strongly recommend looking elsewhere. Perhaps try a book by Tanenbaum? His prose is more readable.

5 out of 5 stars A must have!.......2003-01-18

This book is a must have for every engineer who is doing, or wants to do, Finite Element Analysis. It is written clearly with great examples. The authors should be congratulated for writing such an extensive and useful book. Nice to see a book like this grounded in reality vs. only the theoretical.

2 out of 5 stars Great for Managers.......2002-09-28

If you are an engineer, skip it and do real work. It is general, basic, and lacks real knowledge. This is not a reference book, nor is it a teaching book. However, if you are an engineering manager overseeing a group conducing FEA analysis, this book will help you. It is full of wonderful insight, such as: "FEA can help build a better, more robust product". These blinding flashes of the obvious will keep most real engineers at arm's length. If I had a chance to do it again, I would not purchase this book.

1 out of 5 stars This book is so BAD that forced me to write this review.......2001-12-14

The Title is very appealing, but a book on this subject still is to be written. For us Engineers, I understand the need to have a more practical FEA book other than mathematical "roll over". This may explain the "must have" comments from previous reviews. It's overpriced, "xerox" like printing and way vague. Sorry to not offer another Title on this subject, but this book not even for beginners.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for any FE analyst.......2001-09-20

If you are wanting to do any FEA work, then this is a book that you should have by your computer. Written by engineers for engineers, it takes a straight forward approach to FEA. It starts with a basic review of the theory behind FEA, but then goes into the knowledge necessary to do a good analysis. It discusses all aspects of FEA, from it's accuracy and what types of error there are, to advanced modeling techniques. Equally good for the beginning FE user to the expert analyst.

3 out of 5 stars A Good Overview, but Wordy and Lacking in Specifics.......2001-08-25

If there is one word in the English language to describe this overpriced paperback, it's "verbose". As I read the book, I kept saying to myself "yada, yada, yada...when are we going to get to specifics?". Don't get me wrong...there is useful information in this book. And I applaud its focus on the practical aspects of DOING finite element analysis, rather than all the rigorous mathematics that is the overriding theme in way too many texts. But unless you are completely new at FEA, I think you will find that the authors often repeat themselves and state the obvious. The book is 587 pages, but could easily be made half as large by removing all the fluff. While there are a number of examples given, the book could be improved by using more and better examples that focus on specifics, rather than generalities.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-06-11

Currently I am a CS student in my senior year. I am taking my final for the class tomorrow and the book has done an excellent job of taking some complex topics and translating them into legible english. That being said, I will just explain some of the flaws.

The first problem is the pictures or figures in book which are trying to give a visualization of the topics being explained. There a surprising amount of figures in the book that are completely horrid. I mean that they just either further add confusion or are just completely useless. Very shocking because the author/authors are very talented with words, yet seem to very bad when it comes to creating visualizations. There are a few with flat out errors as well.

The second problem is that the questions in the back of each chapter are a catastrophe. The questions are typically just very vague or just aren't very good questions. For instance, there is a question that is similar this

"Does virtual memory need to be supported by the operating system of a handheld system?"

The answer in the teachers guide is apparently "yes". But clearly, this answer is truly "no". Handheld device operating systems don't NEED to support virtual memory. There are plenty of handheld devices that don't, and certainly you don't ever NEED to support alot of things. The question really means to ask "Is it beneficial for a handheld device to support virtual memory?" The obvious answer that is "of course". I got this question wrong on my homework, but myself and a few others talked with the teacher and he quickly agreed that we were right. There are just far too many questions like this that are poorly written.

Regardless of these two problems, the book is really well done.

Book Description

Database System Concepts, 5/e, is intended for a first course in databases at the junior or senior undergraduate, or first-year graduate, level. In addition to basic material for a first course, the text contains advanced material that can be used for course supplements, or as introductory material for an advanced course.

The authors assume only a familiarity with basic data structures, computer organization, and a high-level programming language such as Java, C, or Pascal. Concepts are presented as intuitive descriptions, and many are based on the running example of a bank enterprise. Important theoretical results are covered, but formal proofs are omitted. In place of proofs, figures and examples are used to suggest why a result is true.

The fundamental concepts and algorithms covered in the book are often based on those used in existing commercial or experimental database systems. The aim is to present these concepts and algorithms in a general setting that is not tied to one particular database system. Details of particular commercial database systems are discussed in the case studies which constitute Part 8 of the book.

The fifth edition of Database System Concepts retains the overall style of prior editions while evolving the content and organization to reflect the changes that are occurring in the way databases are designed, managed, and used.

Key Handles: • Early coverage of SQL in two chapters • Think of SQL as doing or creating Queries • Silberschatz uses a bank analogy throughout his text with Running Examples • Case studies are incorporated that represent a different database, this is in the last Part of the text • Focuses on cutting edge material, such as xml, web based database systems

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Unsatisfactory.......2006-02-27

This was purchased as the required text book for a cs course on advanced database. Having no prior knowledge of database, the book is a hard read especially rel alg and rel calc sections. I agree with the ground up approach of the reviewer, however, the book is all theory. Already through chapter 6 and still do not now how to create a database. For $100.00 you expect more.

1 out of 5 stars Perfect for those who can only read symbols.......2005-05-05

This is quite the typical Computer Science textbook, vastly overpriced and lacking any real information. Veteran CS students will be happy to find that even the most simple concepts have been reduced to pure math, this to make sure that creative students who have no passion for math do not have an unfair advantage.

If you can only read math (or prefer that everything in life is described purely in equation form), this is the best book on the market!

1 out of 5 stars A typical bad CS textbook.......2005-03-29

This is a required book for my undergrad Databases class. While reading over it before the semester started I began to wonder why my professor would ever choose such a terrible book. Of course it became clear when, on the first day of class, the professor began to read word for word off slides with the names of the authors sitting at the bottom along with the familiar 'cute' artwork from the cover. Note to instructors: choosing a book because it provides prewritten notes and allows you to be extra lazy is not a valid reason for choosing a textbook. The book is filled with lots of mathematical notation with few good examples. By good examples I mean those that involve realistic databases and not the 'Consider a schema R = (A, B, C, D, E)...' mathematical drivel that fills most of the pages.

5 out of 5 stars Ground Up Knowledge.......2004-02-09

I read some of the reviews here. The comments varies from a good book to a worthless one.

If you are really interested in making a career out of databases, then this is a book you got to read. An analogy that comes to mind is "You got to have a strong foundation to build a sky craper". This is exactly what this book is. It helps you build a strong foundation.

I got hold of this book when I was in my 4th Semester of my BS in computer science (1994 - 2nd Edition of this book) to clear my Database concepts exam. Ever since, whenever I feel I might not have understood some concept, I go back to this book.

One thing you got to understand is, its not a book that you can just read through and tell people that you have understood the concepts. You need to work the book.

1 out of 5 stars Worthless.......2003-12-04

I've read both this one and "DATABASE SYSTEMS: A PRACTICAL APPROACH TO DESIGN, IMPLEMENTATION, AND MANAGEMENT" (Connolly/Begg), and the latter is by far the best. Some ideas that takes a few seconds to grasp Connollys book, took me about a half an hour to grasp in this one (which I noticed when I tried to refresh my memory). The reason is that it is written in a sometimes incredibly difficult and complex way. Why? For no good reason at all, as far as I can see. The descriptions are not any more "rigorous" or "exact", they are just difficult without gaining anything. The ideas are the same.

Avoid it, unless you want to waste you time with a book that makes learning 10 times slower than with a good one.

5 out of 5 stars All you need for the CLEP:.......2007-08-22

If you're looking for a study guide for the American Government CLEP test, then this book is all you'll need. I read it from cover to cover during the 3-days before my test and passed with flying colors. It covers EVERYTHING you need to know and doesn't leave anything out. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars EASY CLEP!.......2007-02-03

This is the only book that you'll need to pass the American Government CLEP! I agree that you should do what it says in the other reviews and they're all good reviews but I would like to add a new slant. After you buy this book go and buy some page flags and mark every single page in the book that has words in BOLD format. Make your very best effort to read this book from cover to cover at least 2 weeks before you take the American Government CLEP. Then use the next 2 weeks before the test date to review all of the items in the book that are in BOLD which are easy to locate because of the page flags. Of course do what it says in the other reviews such as try know and have a good understanding of every Ammendment and Supreme Court Case in the book. After you pass the American Government CLEP give this book with the page flags still in it to somebody else because you won't need it anymore!

5 out of 5 stars It works!.......2006-03-22

I studied the Cliff Notes American Government book and Microsoft Encarta for 2 weeks and got a 68 on the CLEP. This book has got it all covered for you.

That's not to say that all you need to do is read through this book once. American Government is a harder-than-average CLEP (most people score 5-15 points below their usual score with the same amount/intensity of study). The main difficulty lies primarily in the wording of the questions and answers, not necessarily the difficulty of the subject matter itself. They won't just ask a straightforward question with a straightforward answer. You have to be able to pull from your knowledge of several different facts in order to answer one question. Don't go in to the test without all your Amendments and Court Cases memorized.

However, this book is tailored to the point, focusing on all the issues you need to know. It can guide your study and help it to be maximally profitable.

4 out of 5 stars Almost perfect.......2006-03-14

I used this book as my ONLY study guide for the CLEP test of the same title.

I studied for only three weeks, I passed with an A.

My score was 61 (50 is passing on the CLEP).

This was the lowest score that I have ever gotten on a CLEP test. If this book had more of a question and answer section, I'm sure my score would have been higher.

But all in all, the book was "almost perfect".

5 out of 5 stars Great for CLEP.......2005-10-13

I used this book to study for the American Government CLEP. I easily passed. I support what the other reviewers have said exactly- this book covers almost everything on the exam but a few questions and it does not contain much extra information that you don't need to know. Easy to read. Easy to understand.

Operating systems are large and complex, and yet must function with near-absolute reliability--that's why they're a class unto themselves in the field of software development. Since its first release 20 years ago, "the dinosaur book"--Operating System Concepts by Abraham Silberschatz, Peter Baer Galvin, and Greg Gagne--has been a valuable reference for designers and implementers of operating systems. The newly released sixth edition of this book maintains the volume's authority with new sections on thread management, distributed processes, and the Java Virtual Machine (JVM). There's also information on the workings of the latest crop of operating systems, including Microsoft Windows 2000, Linux, FreeBSD, and compact operating systems for handheld devices.

This book is concerned with the design of operating systems, which is to say it enumerates the problems that pop up in the creation of efficient systems and explores alternative ways of dealing with them, detailing the advantages and shortcomings of each. For example, in their chapter on scheduling CPU activity, the authors explain several algorithms (first-come, first-served, and round-robin scheduling, among others) for allocating the capacity of single and multiple processors among jobs. They highlight the relative advantages of each, and explain how several real-life operating systems solve the problem. They then present the reader with exercises (this book is essentially a university textbook) that inspire thought and discussion. --David Wall

Topics covered: The problems faced by designers of system software for electronic computers, and strategies that have been developed over the past 20 years to address (and, in some cases, solve) them. Problems of CPU scheduling, memory allocation, paging, processes and threads, storage management, distributed processes and storage mechanisms, and security are all discussed thoroughly and with many authoritative references.

Book Description

Celebrating its 20th anniversary, Silberschatz: Operating Systems Concepts, Sixth Edition, continues to provide a solid theoretical foundation for understanding operating systems. The Sixth Edition offers improved conceptual coverage and added content to bridge the gap between concepts and actual implementations. Threads has been added to this latest edition and includes coverage of Pthreads and Java threads. All code examples have been rewritten and are now in C. Increased coverage of small footprint operating systems such as PalmOS and real-time operating system, as well as a new chapter on Windows 2000, have been added.

Not a very good book. Had to buy it for a class.

5 out of 5 stars It's the "Concepts" Book.......2005-06-09

This book does a good job in keeping up with the Title, "OS Concepts". I won't go in detail justifying that, as it's already been done by several before me.

However, one point worth mentioning is that it's still a concepts book. To be a real programmer / computer science person, one needs to implement the concepts. In that regard, I'd recommed the book " Operating Systems: Design & Implementation by Andrew S. Tanenbaum, Albert S. Woodhull". That way you'll know what the code looks like.

This book is great to start with and learn how an OS works. "NO CODE INSIDE THOUGH"

4 out of 5 stars Accessible treatment of complex topics.......2005-03-12

This book does a great job of presenting all details of operating system design and operation. When appropriate, the authors point out how Linux, Solaris or Windows implements a given topic. This is valuable for software developers who work on these platform and need to understand how the scheduler is going to react if you spawn new threads/processes.

The one bad thing I can say is that some examples are too general and do not convey the proper detail. This is just a minor distraction and does not take away from the book's overall effectiveness.

5 out of 5 stars Great Fundamentals of OS Book.......2004-11-28

Good book for learning OS principles for undergrad and lower grad students. I recommend this for hose wanting an introduction to OS Internals.

I prefer this to Modern OS by Tanenbaum.

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre to poor OS book.......2004-10-12

It's been around 13 years since I took a course on OSes. I decided to purchase this book as a reference and to review some of the material that I have not had to deal with for a long time (e.g. synchronization primitives). I found the book to be a poor reference and found the chapters that I read to have poor or lacking exposition of the principles, data structures, and algorithms involved. e.g. there were sections where he lists pseudocode and says "see fig 2.13 for the algorithm" with no discussion of the reasoning behind the algorithm. The book also did not take any time to discuss practical considerations, e.g. implementing synchronization primitives with modern optimizing compilers and on modern out-of-order memory systems.

I am looking for a better substitute, and for now would suggest passing on this book.

Book Description

The Book of Abramelin is the first modern translation of this magical work since Mathers' original translation over 100 years ago. Not only is the language updated, but Georg Dehn, the compiler and editor, has sourced his work from all extant manuscripts, while Mathers used just one.

The result is a stunning new translation that has already set the occult world abuzz. It includes voluminous important material left out of Mathers' work, including an entire Part 2 filled with magical recipes, important distinctions in the Knowledge and Conversation of the Holy Guardian Angel ritual, and complete word grids that were only partially completed by Mathers. This is an essential work for any serious practicing magician or student of occult history.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Complete Edition of a Classic Grimoire.......2007-09-15

This brand new translation from a newly-discovered German grimoire by Steven Guth and compiled and edited by Georg Dehn makes the Mathers' edition completely obsolete. Among the interesting aspects of the book is a thirty page description of the adventure that led to the discovery of Abramelin Book Four and this new translation, which forms Appendix One, and is entitled THE EDITOR'S QUEST. This shows how many years and how many miles across the world that Dehn traveled to compile the information that led to this most complete edition.

Profusely illustrated and loaded with charts and detailed information, this new book is a joy to read and to use.

Dehn also explains that the real and complete Abramelin ritual series is an eighteen month commitment, and NOT the six months, as previously thought. This three-times longer preparation and study helps the magician to become better acquainted with the material -- and more effective at the magic shown in the book.

Also throughout the book is a running commentary, where various aspects of the operation are commented upon right in the text, and was not merely relegated to some footnotes at the back of the book.

There is a explanation of the word squares, and how to use them. This is explained in the language of today, so it is easily understandable to all who read it. In addition, there are many plates showing actual pages from the original manuscript, which I found to be a nice touch. There are also -- maps, photos, manuscript pages, as well as artistic renderings of some of the principals involved in the creation of the modern-day Abramelin grimoire editions.

I give this my highest recommendation -- and this book is REQUIRED for every serious mystic's magic library.

5 out of 5 stars Not for Everyone.......2007-07-16

Magic means something different to everyone, And everyone who gets into this field does so for different reasons.
This system is very much based in devotion and faith. Which works for me personally. This work is very good and quite profound, but I would not recommend it to many individuals. Not because of the level of advancement or the quality, but because this particular approach is simply not for everyone. I would only recommend this approach to those who are experienced in prayer and devotion and not just general Magical workings.

5 out of 5 stars Better Information.......2007-05-14

This version is much more informational especially the Book 4, where the information in the squares are more complete as compare to the earlier Mather's version.

Book Description

"If we wish to help humans to become more fully human, we must realize not only that they try to realize themselves, but that they are also reluctant or afraid or unable to do so. Only by fully appreciating this dialectic between sickness and health can we help to tip the balance in favor of health." -Abraham Maslow
Abraham Maslow's theories of self-actualization and the hierarchy of human needs are the cornerstone of modern humanistic psychology, and no book so well epitomizes those ideas as his classic Toward a Psychology of Being.
A profound book, an exciting book, its influence continues to spread, more than a quarter century after its author's death, beyond psychology and throughout the humanities, social theory, and business management theory.
Of course, the book's enduring popularity stems from the important questions it raises and the answers it provides concerning what is fundamental to human nature and psychological well-being, and what is needed to promote, maintain, and restore mental and emotional well-being. But its success also has to do with Maslow's unique ability to convey difficult philosophical concepts with passion, precision, and astonishing clarity, and, through the power of his words, to ignite in readers a sense of creative joy and wholeness toward which we, as beings capable of self-actualization, strive.
This Third Edition makes Abraham Maslow's ideas accessible to a new generation of psychology students, as well as businesspeople, managers, and trainers interested in applying the study of human behavior to management techniques.
An energetic and articulate scholar, Professor Maslow was the author of more than twenty books, including Eupsychian Management; Psychology of Science; Religions, Values, and Peak Experiences; Motivation and Personality; and Principles of Abnormal Psychology (with B. Mittelmann). He also edited New Knowledge in Human Values and wrote nearly one hundred articles. His teachings continue to be a staple for psychologists and psychology students.
"Capacities clamor to be used, and cease their clamor only when they are well used. . . . Not only is it fun to use our capacities, but it is necessary for growth. The unused skill or capacity or organ can become a disease center or else atrophy or disappear, thus diminishing the person." -Abraham Maslow
Toward a Psychology of Being, Third Edition
Abraham Maslow doesn't pretend to have easy answers, absolutes, or solutions that bring the relief of finality-but he does have a deep belief in people. In this Third Edition of Toward a Psychology of Being (the original edition sold well over 100,000 copies), there is a constant optimistic thrust toward a future based on the intrinsic values of humanity. Professor Maslow states that, "This inner nature, as much as we know of it so far, seems not to be intrinsically evil, but rather either neutral or positively 'good.' What we call evil behavior appears most often to be a secondary reaction to frustration of this intrinsic nature." He demonstrates that human beings can be loving, noble, and creative, and are capable of pursuing the highest values and aspirations.
This Third Edition will bring Professor Maslow's ideas to a whole new generation of business and psychology readers, as well as anyone interested in the study of human behavior.

3 out of 5 stars How could this book possibly cost $50?.......2004-01-14

This book was not written as a textbook - it was written as a standard work of non-fiction. 15 years ago it cost $8. How can they charge $50 for it?

I believe we have to take these factors into account when discussing the merits of a book. This price is really out of hand.

5 out of 5 stars Hard Reading but Worth It.......2002-08-16

I had to read this for an Organizational Leadership class in graduate school. When I first got it I thought, "This is going to be like reading a VCR manual." That is, it appeared to be boring theoretical way out there stuff, with sentences lasting a full paragraph.

However, it is one of the best books I have ever read in helping me to understand people and why they are the way they are. This is a quick written self help book. Rather, it explains the fundamental causes of people's behavior in life.

4 out of 5 stars Tough reading.......2001-10-29

I've got more knowledge about psychology than most of the people in the general population and found this book difficult reading. It focuses on actualization rather than on the hierarchy of needs.

5 out of 5 stars one of his best..........2000-06-01

...and easier going than the more technical FARTHER REACHES. A good intro to Maslow's thought and to humanistic psychology in general, it lays out many of his key ideas in a plain and simple style.

5 out of 5 stars Change Your Life!.......2000-01-30

Discovering this book back in the 1960s changed my life and led me into the field of first, Humanistic Psychology and then into Transpersonal Psychology, where I found my life-work and purpose.

Read it, and if you are searching for some real meaning in your life, you will find the beginning of the way. Then read all the books in the list of references, and that will be even better!

Book Description

"C++ Template Metaprogramming" sheds light on the most powerful idioms of today's C++, at long last delivering practical metaprogramming tools and techniques into the hands of the everyday programmer.

Since the introduction of templates, C++ programmers have discovered surprising and powerful ways to perform computation at compile-time. While the excitement generated by these capabilities among C++ experts has reached the community at large, their practical application remains out-of-reach for many programmers. Literature on C++ template metaprogramming has focused primarily on details of low-level "tricks" at the expense of strong idioms and abstractions, and without illuminating the path from metaprogramming to expressive interfaces and efficient, maintainable software.

This book delivers both "big picture" ideas and practical tools. It explains what metaprogramming is, why it matters, and how the unique combination of features in C++ make it an especially powerful language for metaprogramming. It also presents the Boost Metaprogramming Library, a powerful open source framework of high-level compile-time components based on familiar STL idioms, which makes C++ metaprogramming easy, expressive, and fun.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars I found the title misleading.......2006-04-26

This book is called "C++ Template Metaprogramming" but it should be called "Boost MPL API Reference." The first portion of this book covers the basics of template metaprogramming fairly well, but what I wanted the rest of the book to cover were both advanced techniques and real-world applications. What I got was material on how to use the Boost metaprogramming library. This book mostly covers just that library, and the various templates that it offers, but what I felt the book should have provided was not only how the more interesting parts of the MPL were implemented, but also interesting applications of the MPL where some interesting algorithm was made possible by template metaprogramming. I can look up the MPL reference docs online, thank you very much.

To summarize - this is a pretty good introduction to template metaprogramming, but seems to be suited for the unlikely position of someone who wants or needs to use this technique, but isn't academically interested in it, and so mainly needs a walkthrough of the set of standard functions available as part of the MPL.

This book is a bad choice for those interested in template metapgramming and wondering if it might help them, but want to learn more about it and its applications first.

5 out of 5 stars Hope to see more books written by David Abrahams.......2005-04-04

C++ Template Metaprogramming is a very valuable book. For me, already chapter 2 was worth the money of the complete book. It showed me how to think in Templates and Metafunctions. That helped me to understand a lot of the other template technics.

As a user of boost.python I always wondered what's possible with templates. My personal target is to understand what's going on in that magic library. This book brought me a very big step further.

I suggest reading this book before reading any of the other Template books like 'Modern C++ Design'. But probably you don't need no other book after reading this one.

5 out of 5 stars Necessary book for template library writers........2005-01-21

This book describes the boost MPL library. Its a very useful guide to this library and it includes enough examples to walk you through how to use it.

Secondly the book explains Meta-programming. This is a new concept to a lot of C++ programmers and old hat to LISP programmers. The C++ pre-compiler is constrained to integral types as constraints. But there are a host of tricks you can use within that constraint to build libraries that adapt to their calling structure. Thus generating code that is as efficient as hand written. Of course with your compiler, your milage may vary.

The other great thing about using this library, MPL, is that where you would write repeticious template code for every parameter in a template'd library like Tuples, you can automate with it with MPL.

Meta programming is a pretty new concept within the C++ community and this book will give us a common language to talk about it. There are other resources on the net, but this book pulls them together.

Highly recommended for expert C++ programmers, C++ Library writers and intermediate programmers study'ing to become experts. If you finished Andrei's book, "Modern C++ Design", this is a great next book to buy and own.

4 out of 5 stars An interesting book..........2004-12-31

This is a really interesting book. The template metaprogramming technical topics covered are extremely advanced, and right at the leading edge of C++ library development, yet the step-by-step presentation makes the material understandable even to intermediate programmers. Since the book draws its examples from code that works with the Boost libraries (supplied on a CD), readers can try the examples and play around with them to see how they work.

Some of the libraries discussed (Boost Type Traits, Boost Bind) are well along to becoming part of the C++ standard via a library technical report, so they will eventually become available to every C++ programmer. The bulk of the book is devoted to the Boost Metaprogramming Library, which packages up a lot of advanced techniques into accessible form.

One issue with template metaprogramming is that compile times can get out of hand. The book includes an appendix with hints on avoiding the problem, together with test timings for a half-dozen popular compilers. I really like the timings; too many other authors make assertions about efficiency without supporting data.

I would guess that this book will be of interest to intermediate and advanced C++ programmers interested in library development. And less interesting to beginning programmers, or programmers who never package up their creations into libraries.

4 out of 5 stars A different take on templates.......2004-11-26

It was only some 5 or 6 years ago that templates became standardised in C++. Even now, frustratingly, different C++ compilers may still have slightly different treatments. That notwithstanding, templates have been widely recognised as enhancing the expressive power of C++. But the authors reveal that perhaps you have not fully appreciated just how expressive templates can be.

They aim this book at experienced C++ programmers. Who still probably have not used templates beyond the standard examples. The metaprogramming in the book goes on at compile time, not run time. Previously, explicit user directives at compile time might have been parser type commands, along the lines of YACC. But templates open up this compile time to a wide new space of manipulations. While the authors were not the first to discover it, the book appears to be one of the first to promulgate the idea.

The book is replete with examples of programming these templates. Some of you will thrill to explore it. But others may find it very confining. Because data is immutable. So compile time C++ has no analog of the non-constant variables used in run time C++. This immediately rules out for loops, for starters. Instead, recursion is often used in place of for. It's a different mind set to cultivate. Metaprogramming is intriguing, but its utility may be only in a few circumstances.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for women.......2007-10-05

Although, Beth Moore's studies are geared toward women, we just finished this Bible Study in our couples small group. Both men and women enjoyed and got a lot out of the study. The men did have to put up with a few "girly moments" but they didn't seem to mind since they found the rest of the study so fascinating. I highly recommend the study.

5 out of 5 stars PATRIARCH MEMBER GUIDE.......2007-09-29

This study is EXCELLENT! It's a ton of material but whatever you can do in homework will be a real blessing.

5 out of 5 stars Dynamic Study!!.......2007-05-02

This study is, at present, the best Beth Moore Indepth Bible Study I've taken part in! Like the reviewer, LL, stated, an honest look at our "heroes of the faith" provides such a swell of comfort in knowing that God can use the flawed, the failing, and bring them into lives of victory. God was with them, loved them, and blessed them despite many glaring obstacles. The study was a tremendous blessing to me. Mrs. Moore's ability to discern deep truths and her knowledge that allows her to pull the Old Testment references together and to the New Testament confirmations amazes me. God is not afraid to show us the real struggles faced by His people.

5 out of 5 stars The Patriarchs.......2007-03-30

My Bible Study group, just finished the Patriarchs. It was truley a blessing to have done this study. This was my first time with Beth Moore and she is simply amazing. Every lesson reached my heart and soul. Her workbook is great and the CD's that are with this study are just awesome. This study covers the book of Genesis, from Abraham to Jacob, and showed how God tied Abraham, Isaac and Jacob to the present and the future. It is a study well worth taking.

5 out of 5 stars Beth Moore, a gifted teacher.......2006-10-30

I respectfully disagree with every last word of the previous review. The Patriarchs study was well-done and I believe God-inspired. Beth Moore does an excellent job of revealing the flawed humanity and sin-nature of every human being, including the patriarchs of the O.T. She does so to encourage all who might feel "too far gone" in their sin or inadequate in some way to serve the Lord and show that with Christ, all things are possible. He doesn't choose those who appear qualified in the world's eye, but those He deems worthy in His own sovereign knowledge. This study provides a wonderful foundation of the book of Genesis in a way that is relevant, respectful and that brings the characters to life. The patriarchs were no more or less perfect than anyone else, yet I am amazed at how God used these sinful, imperfect men to bring His covenant to a lost world.
