WOW! The best ice cream ever!.......2007-10-08
I'm an ice cream fanatic, but my ice cream maker was buried in the basement, because I was never able to make ice cream that was better than store-bought. When I received this book as a gift, I dug the ice cream maker out to try again. I'm glad I did, because every recipe I've tried has been superb - rich, creamy, full of flavor - and far better than anything produced commercially. What a difference good recipes make!
The custard-based ice creams are my favorites (the Vanilla Malt is out of this world - try it with crushed Heath Bars added), but the Philadelphia style Peach was also excellent. It was far fruitier than what I'm used to, as the author said it would be, and it was delicious. I have a Cuisinart ICE-20 1-1/2-Quart Automatic Ice Cream, Frozen Yogurt, and Sorbet Maker, White, and the recipes make just the right amount for this machine.
If you take a few minutes to read the sections on techique, and follow the instructions, including multiple bowls, strainers, and ice baths, you'll turn out ice cream that will blow you away.
Love, love, love David's new book!.......2007-10-05
The Perfect Scoop is definitely one of my newest favorite cookbooks. He includes great stories, helpful tips and delicious recipes for classic and interesting new flavors of ice cream, sorbet, gelato, frozen yogurt and more. He even includes great recipes for "add-ins."
A must-have for anyone with an ice cream maker.
Buy It Now!.......2007-09-20
I have way too many cookbooks and I can honestly say this is one of my favourites. David's style is easy and enjoyable, the recipes do what they are supposed to do and they taste fantastic. The best part of this book is that both volumetric and weight measurements are included, something which many supposedly great cookbooks by apparent expert chefs do not - something which continues to amaze me. I have one minor complaint - the basic custard method requires too many bowls which makes for too much washing up! However, I can cope with this, because this method has created the smoothest, creamiest, most ice-crystal-free home icecream I have ever had! Other methods I have tried just don't stack up.

Pure and (Mostly) Simple.......2007-09-11
I rec'd. a gift cert. to Amazon w/ a hint to use it for an ice cream book; I had this genre on my list, but no particular book, so I did some research, then read a review of this one somewhere and decided it had to be MY ice cream book. I am very happy with my choice: everything I have made has been divine! I even made ice cream sandwiches with plum ice cream, something I would not have considered in the past. The style is as refreshing as the recipes. I also appreciate that David has cut down somewhat on egg yolks and cream. I started making my own ice cream and frozen yogurt to avoid high fructose corn syrup: I was shocked to find it in my favorite frozen yogurt. (It's no longer possible to find unadulterated corn syrup, even, so I have substituted rice syrup.) I made the Watermelon Sorbetto yesterday and it was fabulous! I live in California where friends often have excesses of homegrown fruit. This book has given me more than one option in nearly every case. This a great book that covers all information for making ice cream + in a small, counter-top ice cream maker, as well as toppings and other goodies. It also includes wonderful hints for embellishing your creations.
The best ice cream recipe book!.......2007-09-10
My kids bought me an ice cream maker attachment for my Kitchen Aide mixer for Mother's Day so I decided to buy a variety of recipe books, as I've never made ice cream before.
I bought this one, the Ben & Jerry book (also good), the idiots guide to homemade ice cream, and a few others that I picked up used.
Perfect scoop is our favorite! Everything we've made has been exceptional.
First off was the Chocolate Ice Cream which was my first attempt at a custard ice cream and the best we've ever had. Next we made the Rice Gelato (with Tangerine rind instead of Orange because that was all I had) which was very good also...sort of like a citrus scented frozen rice pudding.
Last weekend we made the Mango sorbet which was the best sorbet I've ever had, and it was so easy to make. Next up will the Banana Blueberry sorbet. It's a great book and if you're going to get an ice cream maker - buy this too! :-)

Customer Reviews:
Exciting!.......2007-06-12
This was a fun book to read - the plot was full or action and suspense, and the romance was very cute and natural! I related to the way Maggie wanted to protect her daughter at all costs, and the rebellious, smart-mouthed attitude of Melanie was familiar to me too.
Definitely One Star.......2007-05-27
I listened to the audiobook of Full Scoop and was bored within the first 20 minutes. It was very predictable and the main characters did not have any chemistry. I have enjoyed some of her other romance books, including her Stephanie Plum series, but this one was a dud.
A Grueling Read.......2006-12-04
After reading all of the Stephanie Plum series, I was hopeful this book would be equally entertaining. Sadly not the case. It took tenacity, if not OCD, to finish it. The characters are poorly developed, the plot smacks of artificiality. Overall, I felt it to be a romance novel posing as a mystery, with mediocre writing to boot.
My impression is Janet Evanovich's role is only to make the book more marketable. She could not possibly have played a major part in its creation! So who is Charlotte Hughes to pull this off?
Disappointing.......2006-11-17
I started the Full series a few years back when I needed an Evanovich fix between Plum books. I loved the first 3, after that I can't say they have lived up to my expectations. This latest is the worse of all, it reminds of the 180 page romance novels of the early 70's, you know the ones you'd 6 of every month in the mail? Juvenile and unrealistic, sorry Janet but this one is a stinker for those of us used to the great Stephanie Plum novels and even the Barnaby series. Lorelei King does her best, but even a great reader can't help this book.
Don't expect Stephanie Plum.......2006-08-30
If you read this expecting the humor and fast pace of a Stephanie Plum novel, you'll be disappointed. It doesn't seem like JE did any more than wave a magic wand over these books.

Yummy Gossip!!!.......2006-01-07
I love Laurie Jacobson's books and this one is the best yet!!! I love her "juicy little tidbits" about the stars of yesteryear. The stories are very entertaining and I love the fact that she also included recipes to match the stories. A very clever thing to do!!! It's almost like 2 books in one, a gossipy book and a cookbook! I hope she continues to research Hollywood and to write wonderful books about the stars!!!! My only complaint---it's not long enough!!! I am ready for a "Dishing Hollywood II".
A Must-Have Book For Classic Movie Fans!.......2005-02-22
I had so much fun reading this book! The stories are great and Miss Jacobson clears up a lot of false Hollywood rumors. The best part about this book is that it includes chapters about some forgotten stars like Carole Landis, Dorothy Kilgallen, and Lupe Velez. Anyone who is a fan of classic Hollywood and loves juicy gossip will want this book.
Dishing Hollywood: Recipe for Success.......2004-03-01
I highly recommend Dishing Hollywood The Real Scoop on Tinseltown's Most Notorious Scandals. Laurie Jacobson really knows her stuff and serves up heaping portions of scandal and intrigue of Hollywood's most notorious stars. I have read all of the author's books and Dishing Hollywood is Jacobson at her best. Jacobson brilliantly spins tale after sordid tale, "sprinkles" famous film quotes throughout each chapter and "tops" off with a recipe of the star's favorite dish (or, in some cases, their last meal!). Dishing Hollywood is a tasty treat, and I can't wait for Jacobson's next book!
Whatta Dish! A Collection of Hollywood Scandals Du Jour.......2004-01-20
I fortuitously fell into this little gem the day after xmas.....a belated "BEST" present to myself.
While I already own Jacobson's two other books and hold her in high regard, this book proves that she is only getting better as a film historian and writer.
She assumes a slick, quasi-cinema noir persona in her narrative and mixes in a Sandra Lee-like easy 'recipe' that takes a not too subtle slam at each of the scandals/stories she relates. The vanity of the 'dish' (aka scandal/tragedy/hard luck story) only enhances the general readability of this book. This is a novel approach that makes an already interesting product even more appealing. I kept thinking that the author did a terrific job with the material she was presenting.
Aside from the kidding around, this book is really rather fair and factual. The author knows her stuff and relies on knowledgeable sources to substantiate or refute claims made in the book.
My only criticism of this book is that I wish it had been longer and had covered some other stories that I find interesting and want to know more about. Hopefully there will be a follow-up to this book which will do that.
Anyway, this is a very good read and worth the $ and time spent reading it.
A shocking and lurid collection.......2004-01-12
Organized around the theme of food to the extent of featuring choice recipes with each biographical entry, Dishing Hollywood: The Real Scoop On Tinseltown's Most Notorious Scandals by television writer and producer Laurie Jacobson is a compelling look into more than forty tabloid-worthy exploits of Hollywood's stars ranging from the early twentieth century down to the present day. A shocking and lurid collection guaranteed to add spicy conversational anecdotes to one's Hollywood themed cooking, the recipes are as fun as the scandals are fascinating.

Customer Reviews:
Good view of the how Ben and Jerry's developed.......2003-10-13
A good recount of how the company got going, but the last few chapters dragged.
There are things to learn about how Ben and Jerry developed their company:
1)They are geniuses at this. They actually figured out mass production without knowing what they were doing, they figured out marketing from scratch, they encountered financing and survived.
2)They had a near masochistic willingness to work. Boy did these guys work hard (it would kill me to do what they did, even if I had the will to do it).
3)They could adapt incredibly.
4) and finally: There are pitfalls and prices to trying to make social profits and business profits at the same time and to not planning your company to be as big as it already is.
You can learn about businesses in their growth phase from this book. You can learn about making sure a company has sufficient controls in place for its size. You may be able to learn whether you have what it takes to be an entrepeneur.
The first 3/4th of the book were fun to read but for some reason the last couple of chapters, when Ben and Jerry were playing less of a part in the business, were slow and boring (I don't exactly know why but I know they dragged).
Not for serious business interest.......2003-04-24
I read this book at the suggestion of a business school professor. It was supposedly a great illustration of the trials and tribulations of entrepreneurs.
I found that the book tried more to be humorous than to convey any business knowledge to the reader. Everything seemed to be an inside joke. Rather than producing a well thought-out account of a business experience, the book fell flat with dumb humor. I was very unimpressed with how the company was run, and I don't feel like I got much from the book.
The Inside Scoop is just that !.......2001-02-26
It's a chronicle of the intriguing journey of junior high friends who split the $5 cost of a home study course in making homemade ice cream and turn it into a $237 million company (1999 sales). Ben & Jerry's antics of giving away ice cream so they can 'get the ice cream into people's mouths so they will buy it,' take on some unusual situations. Free cones are offered to folks who register to vote, donate books to Head Start, or send postcards to elected officials for a variety of causes, and to celebrate at Fall Down Festivals with block long stilt walking races, music and other amusements. Solar-powered mobiles are used to transport the ice cream and a show on the road. They still sponsor customer appreciation day once a year when free cones are dipped all day.
It's hard to resist a bowl or cone of Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough or Cherry Garcia as you read this humorous show and tell of two guys who really want (and do) make a difference. You'll be ready to book a snow shoe tour of the Vermont plant by the time you finish reading about these guys' mission. Their values-led business (in addition to having fun) is to produce the best ice cream from Vermont dairy products, to increase the value of the of the company for the stockholders and create career opportunities and financial rewards for employees, and to improve the quality of life for the community. (They donate 7.5% of pretax profits to Ben & Jerry's Foundation that supports a variety of causes that improve the quality of life for children.)
I'm using this book as a project for an organizational communications course and enjoyed the reading (and eating) more than I ever expected. It was the most fun I've had doing homework!
the subtitle says it all.......2001-01-24
This was a really good book that shows "How Two Real Guys Built a Business With a Social Conscience and a Sense of Humor." This should be required reading for MBA's along with Hawkin's Growing a Business.
Hope for the Little Guy.......2000-04-04
Although Ben & Jerry's: The Inside Scoop was a little long-winded at times, I thought it was a good easy-to-read book for non-business majors wanting to start a business. Lager's style of writing makes Ben & Jerry seem like two regular guys up the street who had a dream and went after it with all the gusto they could muster. The book would not serve as a business plan protocol necessarily, however, it does display the true entrepeneriual spirit needed in order to make a business successful. Lager does a wonderful job of showing how Ben & Jerry fed off of each other and when one door closed in their face, they found another way in through a different door or window -- exactly what has to be done if you are going to grow a successful business.
Lager captured the realism of the trials and tribulations experienced by most individuals who begin their own business. I would recommend this book to anyone who was thinking of beginning his/her own business because it gives a look at the real side of starting your own business by making Ben & Jerry two real guys who simply wanted to start their own business so they did not have to work from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for someone else. By putting all the business jargon aside, I felt this was a worthwhile read for someone who needs the reassurance that anyone can start a business and this is how Ben & Jerry started theirs.

Thank you!.......2007-05-12
I gave this book to my soon-to-be daughter-in-law who is now carrying my first grandchild. It is an excellent resource and it was a good way for us to find common ground.
A great offering of hope..........2004-11-29
The title of this book is so apropos. There are babies having babies before they've even had a life. My heart goes out to them and I wish every girl "caught" in this situation could get their hands on this book. I also wish this book had been around when my own daughter was one of them.
Tricia Goyer has drawn richly on personal experience and that of other teens facing the reality of becoming a mother, knowing their carefree youth is gone forever. Goyer writes with compassion, offering hope, tips and tricks to get through the difficult times and situations that these very young mothers are totally unequipped and unprepared to handle.
I applaud the decision these girls make to have and keep their baby. It is a very brave choice they have made. And if there is even the remotest chance I can do so, this book will be my gift of hope and promise to them. Well done, Tricia!
A help in times of trouble.......2004-11-06
The insight in this book lies not only in what it says, but in the style--readable--bits of information connected by the strand of young motherhood. The honor and hope represented in these pages for younger mothers is priceless. Encouragement is abounding in these pages, along with the truth of how difficult this situation can be. Tricia Goyer writes with a compassion of one who knows first hand.
You Won't Be Sorrry.......2004-10-12
I received a copy of the book to review for www.roadtoromance.ca and was happily surprised at the book's frank and honest way of relaying information. This book will be not only a helpful resource to young moms and dads but also to grandparents, teachers, friends and others. With quick snatches of quotes, relife experiences and others Tricia Goyer has assembled a must have manual. I will be giving copies to the local Crisis Pregnancy center. I wish we had it when we had six young girls get pregnant in our small town church.
The thing that disturbs me about the book however, are reviews like the one from Lori in Waterloo on Amazon. com. She says this:
This book contains plagarized information, exploiting the struggles of the very mothers it offers to support. Very unethical which suggests that it is very unChristian.
I wrote to the author and asked her about this. She is very upset that someone would slander her like this, because she has obtained permission from everyone's work she uses in the book. But mostly she's worried that this book won't get to where it needs to be because of some odd jealous paranoia from a few.
Once I recieved the information from the author and have no reason to doubt her as she is a credial writer with great references (and needless to say her publisher and MOPS are no strangers to the legalities of the business) I have no qualms about the five star rating and the high recommendation I am giving it as well.
Great book from someone with a lot of experience.......2004-09-14
What an incredible support for young moms. Ms. Goyer was able to put her considerable experience with teen moms to work in writing this book. She has dedicated endless hours to mentoring and supporting young moms, and this book is an extension of that work. Young moms who are willing to invest the time in reading this book will find themselves blessed.

The title alone should tell you this is not your average dog book! Narrated by an opinionated four-pound dog named Chiclet, and spiced with heartwarming anecdotes, fascinating trivia and 89 enchanting full color photos, Scared Poopless is serious dog care with a sense of humor. You'll have fun while benefiting from the author's two years of research and interviews on countless topics ranging from Anesthesia to Vaccination, from Finding a New Dog to Finding a Lost Dog, and from Selecting a New Puppy to Placing a Dog You Can No Longer Keep.
Each chapter of Scared Poopless is a standalone mini-book. Devour it in one sitting, read a chapter every night or use it as a reference guide for when specific problems pop up. You'll pull it down again and again when you need to know something important like:
How often should I vaccinate my dog and what vaccines are important?
What's the best food for my dog?
Does your dog really need a blood test before heartworm medication or anesthesia?
Is anesthesia-free dental care really safer than cleanings by your vet?
What are the best ways to ensure your dog's safety in the car or on a plane?
How do I get my dog safely through surgery?
Hal Abrams, host of Animal Radio Network says, "This is a great book! There are a million books out there on how to take care of your dog, but there is only one Scared Poopless! It's so fun, with beautiful color pictures. Very easy to read. A terrific book!"
The review in the Journal of the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association called the book "wonderful, and said, "The 90 incredible photos alone are worth the price of admission, but this is much, much more than a cute picture book." And even the movie star dog Benji, in her first book endorsement ever, said, "At last, a dog reveals the shocking truth about dog care! Applause for Chiclet, and two big paws up for her book!"
Most dog care is a dangerous mixture of myths, misinformation and commercial propaganda. Help your dog live a long, healthy life and have fun in the process with Scared Poopless!

your pets can live longer healthier lives for less money and be happier.......2007-05-10
I read the whole book Sunday and can't say enough about how wonderful it is. To be able to write like that and to give so much useful information, even references to things that are not fun for dogs to have happen to them, is a gift to all companion animals and their people. I loved the writing style and learned so much. Our pets are important family members. This book teaches you how to keep them healthier by vaccinating less, feeding them nutritional food that can in the end cost less and save on veterinary bills. The books is a great resource for everything you want to know about your dog's happiness and health.

As both a dog owner and veterinarian by profession, I work in the world of medical science and I live in the world as a devoted dog owner. Therefore, I can truly appreciate the need for Scared Poopless: The Straight Scoop on Dog Care. Although the title might suggest the content is someone trivial, this author has poured her heart, detective skills and keen sense of intuition into real fact finding and honest answers. Her concerns should also be your concerns and her cautions, your yellow flag! In these times we are all bombarded with tons of information and often not enough time to make truly informed decisions. Therefore, I encourage you to let Jan Rasmusen be your guide to bridge the dangerous gap between advances in modern medicine and aggressive marketing campaigns fueled by drug companies to help you decide what is best for the dog in your life.
Insightful & Fun To Read.......2007-05-09
Chiclet and her "mom" have done an exemplary job of researching and compiling a much needed resource for pet owners. Scared Poopless provides a humorous, yet insightful look into the trials and tribulations encountered when caring for our beloved four-legged "kids." This book raises many questions that we have as animal guardians and encourages us to explore all available options in seeking answers. I carry it in my practice and sell it to clients at my cost.
Must Have Resource Book for Dog Owners.......2007-05-09
Scared Poopless is an absolute must have resource book for every dog owner. Jan Rasmusen has done the research for us and compiled it into this enormously informative and easy-to-read book. Everything you ever wanted to know about caring for dogs and a good deal you didn't know you needed to know is within the pages of her book. As a concerned, but somewhat uninformed Mom of three Maltese puppies, I have found Scared Poopless to be invaluable in providing me answers to my questions on many standard veterinarian practices. The chapter on nutrition for our best friends is especially relevant today as "pet parents" deal with the very real concern of feeding our dogs healthy, nutritional meals. Jan's book is exactly what I have been searching for. I love it!

Informative, Complete, great recipies.......2006-02-05
This is a great book with everything you will want to know about frozen delights, whether made with an ice cream maker or not. Instructions enable you to be creative as well. The Apricot Ice recipie is my family's favorite from my ice cream maker and I've tried recipies from other books. This book is well worth the money!
the ice cream encyclopaedia.......2002-06-22
This is the first book I read about ice cream. Almost any imaginable topic is discussed in it: how to freeze, the sorts of ice, sorbet, punch, ice cream, frozen yogurt, ice cream for restrictive diets, soy ice cream, flavors, sweetening, smooth texture, trouble shooting etc etc...). I have not yet tried the recipes but I'll give it a try. This is a most complete book that I recommend to all, whatever sort of ice cream you like.
THE ONLY BOOK YOU NEED ON ICE CREAM.......2000-08-23
This book is FABULOUS if you want to learn about Ice Cream as well as make it. The author provides the background information that many a cookbook leave out so that you can understand and even troubleshoot your creations. She explains what stabilizers, emulsifiers and other ingredients do for ice cream and even includes a section the various machines available.
She includes ice cream recipies for those with dietary restrictions, soy milk, rice milk, yogurt, ices etc. as well as sherberts, sorbets, gelatos etc. There is an exhaustive "chart" which will cover just about any ingredient you can think of adding to your ice cream which gives you quantities for you to use. The author tested recipes are simple and easy to follow and those that I have tried are great.
I own many ice cream books, but if I were to recommend one book on ice cream, this would be it. This is the true bible of Ice Cream books, there is no other so complete.

Evelyn Waugh was one of literature's great curmudgeons and a scathingly funny satirist.
Scoop is a comedy of England's newspaper business of the 1930s and the story of William Boot, a innocent hick from the country who writes careful essays about the habits of the badger. Through a series of accidents and mistaken identity, Boot is hired as a war correspondent for a Fleet Street newspaper. The uncomprehending Boot is sent to the fictional African country of Ishmaelia to cover an expected revolution. Although he has no idea what he is doing and he can't understand the incomprehensible telegrams from his London editors, Boot eventually gets the big story.

Waugh's farce about the newspaper trade and making a name for oneself.......2006-05-27
Evelyn Waugh's send-up of the newspaper business, and where in other novels he could be bitterly satirical, here he's wildly farcical and broadly comical. William Boot, a nature writer for the DAILY BEAST, ("Feather-footed through the plashy fen passes the questing vole" is given as an example of his "high-class style" of writing), is mistaken for the novelist John Boot and is sent to the African country of Ishmaelia. Here he encounters other journalists, many of them American, who are all looking for the scoop that will make them famous. Boot meets and falls in love with a woman named Kachen, and immediately the naïve Boot is in over his head romantically. But it's she who slips Boot the news about a planned coup d'etat, and the simple-minded journalist scoops everyone and eventually comes home a hero. Of course the wrong Boot (John) is given knighthood and the book ends, after additional mistaken identities are made, with everything being righted and Boot (William) going back to writing his innocuous nature articles, none the worse (or better) for wear. Waugh's humor is bright and airy, very reminiscent of P.G. Wodehouse, who is actually alluded to at one point in the story. Lots and lots of laughs from beginning to end.
Is it a comedy if you don't laugh out loud?.......2005-09-02
Funny, but only in a clever way, not in a ha-ha way.
I laugh out loud while reading Mark Twain, Douglas Adams, Carl Hiaasen and Paul Theroux.
This just made me smile thinly and sardonically.
Not that there is anything wrong with that...
Clever.......2005-05-07
Overall, a very satisfying read, but somewhat disjointed. The beginning and ending -- the two parts which take place at Boot Magna in the English countryside -- are laugh-out-loud funny. The middle section, which takes place with the protaganist, William Boot, in the mythical African nation of Ishmaelia, is more straightforward and serious. The portions of the book which chronicle Boot's relationship with Katchen felt like they were torn out of a Hemingway book, given the sparse dialog and direct emotions. I felt as if this book might have been started by a very young, impressionable Waugh during a time when he was experimenting with different styles, trying to find the one which best suited him... styles borrowed from Hemingway, Wodehouse, and Greene. Its slightly disjointed nature made me think that it was a book which he worked on in fits and starts... would write a little, put it back in the drawer, revisit it a couple of months later. Overall, it's a very good book by a writer a few years away from his peak.
Brilliant Wit From the Inimitable Waugh.......2005-04-26
Yes, I'd be bold enough to name Evelyn Waugh as one of the world's greatest writers, a true genius when the word actually meant something (it's handed out too freely nowadays!); we shall likely never see his match again. "Scoop" is not only hilarious (I laughed out loud quite often), but the satire is as timely as it ever was. He is a keen observer of human beings and his depiction of the disorderly East African government and the Fleet Street news agency so given to politically motivated perks that a trick cyclist had been engaged to edit the Sports Page on a five year contract is spot on. All of the absurdity is wonderful. An absolute delight.
Stop the presses.......2004-08-18
Call William Boot the Forrest Gump of the 1930s: oblivious to the process he is a part of, he continually finds himself in the right place at the right time, blindly stumbling onto the Big Story that made him a reluctant hero.
In Scoop, Evelyn Waugh -- one of the most famous curmudgeons of English literature -- produces an enjoyable and easy-to-read satire that will recall the novels of P.G. Wodehouse and Graham Greene's lighter efforts. In the book, Mr. Waugh points his razor wit toward the media, royalty, politics, warfare, and travel, all in the context of a fictional and fanciful war in the made-up Republic of Ishmaelia that is based on Italy's ill-fated war in Abyssinia (now Ethiopia), which Mr. Waugh himself covered as a young reporter.
His sharpest barbs are saved for his one-time profession, which he paints as being populated by lazy and back-stabbing prima donnas incapable of independent thought and more interested in style -- or at least the appearance of style -- than in substance. The bland Boot, the story's protagonist who is a decent enough fellow but a hopeless journalist, manages to get far closer to the truth than any of his colleagues but does so only by chance.
Though the attitudes, language, and practices described in Scoop are more than a little dated, there is an element of truth in the picture Mr. Waugh paints of the Fourth Estate (as sad cases like the contemporary one involving one-time New York Times rising star Jayson Blair remind us). The descriptions are, however, greatly exaggerated: it is impossible to imagine a time when writers were sent into the field so poorly prepared, with unlimited expense accounts, and rewarded for sending in cryptic messages that are somehow turned into massive front-page reports. There is a slight element of sour grapes in Mr. Waugh's description of the newsgathering field he failed to excel in, something most obvious from the names he chooses for the fictional newspapers in the story (The Daily Beast, The Daily Brute, etc.).
More importantly, like most popular satires, Scoop is really less about its subject matter than about comforting those who don't move in the same circles as the rich and powerful the book dismantles between its covers -- remember that these are the same people who were expected to buy this book when it was published in 1938. Even critics at that time recognized this in an as-a-matter-of-fact way, referring to Scoop as a comedy of errors Mr. Waugh dashed off to pay the bills between more weighty projects.
But the most serious flaw of the book concerns the way the main character, Boot, evolves ... or fails to evolve. Characters are the cornerstone of any great story and even with a farce like Scoop (compare Boot to the bumbling Wormold in Mr. Greene's Our Man in Havana, another satire produced by a serious writer on a lark) the story is dramatically improved by illustrating the evolution of characters over the length of the narrative. But in Scoop, Boot returns home just the same as when he left. All of the characters, in fact, fail to change at all during the course of the story, with the possible exception of the compelling and shadowy Russian/Hungarian/Pole cum German love interest, Kätchen -- not the best possible work from an author known for producing noteworthy personalities in his more noteworthy novels like Decline and Fall and Brideshead Revisited.

Decent book, but not a comprehensive guide.......2007-09-08
When I read all the stellar reviews for this book, I thought it was the perfect book for me. We have had our dog for two months, and are now venturing out to different places with her. We bought this book last night (and paid full price for it--fancy THAT) in anticipation of a free-roaming day trip today.
First, I do have to say that creating a comprehensive guide is exceedingly difficult. The number of hotels, restaurants and attractions you'd have to visit...well, it's mind-boggling. However, there are both good and bad points to this book, depending on what you're looking for.
Good Points:
1. Very detailed information about the parks, beaches and recreations areas, complete with an easy-to-read rating system (1 to 4 paws) and a clear indicator of off-leash venues (running dog icon). She also includes parking and entrance tips, park amenities that would appeal to your dog, what trails or areas are dog-accessible, etc. Very good listings. This is the main reason you'd want to buy this book.
2. Detailed information on SOME restaurants and hotels and basic information on others. Just thumbing through the book, it's clear that Maria's favorites get lots of detail. For instance, I was thumbing through the book and Roses's Cafe (page 486) in San Francisco gets a full 2/3 of a page. Of course, there was a story attached to that listing of how Maria was introduced to the place, and her experience with it. Other places just list that there is outdoor seating, dogs are allowed, etc. Your mileage may vary.
3. Coverage of the entire state. More breadth, less depth. However, you would think that the local area editions are more comprehensive. Nope. The Bay Area edition seems to have the same information contained in the California edition.
4. Doggie Diversions. Maria lists some great things to do with your dog aside from parks. Shopping, attractions, fun stuff to do. These are sometimes surprising.
5. Other information. I never knew that you could take a dog onto a San Francisco Muni bus or a Cable Car. Maria includes the requirements (muzzle, non-commute hours for Muni) and costs. I also never knew that Nordstrom's welcomes dogs. Dogs and shopping...oh boy!
Bad Points:
1. Only the parks are on the area map. Okay, so let's say you're in San Jose and need a place to stay, a place to eat, and a place to run your dog. You can look at the map and see where to run your dog, but how so you know where the restaurants are in conjunction to your dog park? Hm. GPS, I guess.
2. Could use more listings for hotels and restaurants. For instance, dogfriendly.com has 22 listings for restaurants in San Jose; the book has TWO. San Jose is a pretty big city, and the inclusion of only two restaurants is pitiful.
3. Place you can't take your dog. In some instances, Maria includes this info. For instance, you can't take your dog to California State beaches. Rats. However, I was thinking of going to Muir Woods yesterday, and the book didn't say whether dogs were allowed or not. This is a major attraction in Marin County. Perhaps Maria should consider a list of major attractions in tourist areas where dogs ARE and ARE NOT allowed. For instance, are dogs allowed on Pier 39 and Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco? Hm. I had to sleuth a bit and read the info on Aquatic Park and the RESTAURANT section...the info was there (the answer is yes).
4. Small nit pick: Listings should include name, address, phone number and THEN the info on why it's good. Sometimes the address info is buried within the text. Most times, it's at the end. A good editor would've made this a bit friendlier. It's a bit of a nit-pick, but it's annoying.
All in all, it's a decent book, but it has its flaws. I think it is better than many of the other books out there (better detailed info than dogfriendly.com's book, and rates each of the parks), but has fewer listings than others. I think it's worth your going to a store to check it out. Even with the good reviews here, I was a bit skeptical, and I needed to compare and contrast the book with others in person to make a final buying decision.
If you have a dog and live in California, you need this book!.......2007-08-11
My dog loves to go places with me. A walk is his all time favorite, and he's always ready to jump in the car and just go -- I swear he knows the new from the old and always gets excited no matter what. Well, I had just about run out of new places to go with him and was starting to get a little bored when I heard about this book. It has opened up our world even more, and in doing so gave me the confidence to explore more with my best friend.
Great book.......2007-08-10
This is definately a book for the car or in my case, my dog's luggage!!! I found a bunch of parks in my area alone I didn't even know were there! I bought this because we take my dog everywhere and I wanted new places to go. This also covers areas where the Bay Area book stops. I even ended up sharing some parks with my friends who have dogs.
For those who can't bear to be away from their dog.......2007-02-18
Bought this for myself, unfortunately just weeks before deciding to leave California and move to the East! Gave it as a gift to a close dog-lover friend who loved it. I think it is a great guide for finding out where all the dog-friendly places are. It would otherwise take years to figure all these things out on your own by simple trial-and-error and networking with dog people. Also great for socializing a new puppy (which is what I bought it for).
I'm sure it used to be great........2006-08-12
Swell book but WAY out of date. This is the 5th printing but I've been unable to verify that there is any new information since 1993. We used it on a trip last week and most of the places we checked out had changed their policy or had gone out of business.
