Good introduction for laypersons.......2006-06-25
"Principles and Practice of Phytotherapy" is a good general introduction to herbal medicine for laypersons looking to incorporate herbs into their family's healthcare. The authors have concocted a rather obtuse "philosophy" of herbal medicine in an attempt to appropriate and justify the philosophies behind all schools of traditional herbalism. Otherwise this text is straightforward and simple to use. Includes information on 45 useful herbs, a managable amount of information for laypersons just starting out in herbalism.
Physicians, nurse practitioners and other health care professionals with an interest in phytotherapy will find "Herbal Medicine" by Weiss and Fintelman or "Rational Phytothrapy" by Schulz, et al more useful for practice.
principes and practice of phytotherapy: modern herbal medicine.......2005-08-07
This book is very neat,it goes well with other books in the field because this book gets very in-depth with each chemical very useful one of the most useful books of my collection. They also add lots of useful examples to bring this information into the present life.
Herbology Course Text.......2004-12-31
Excellent text in use for my adult/graduate classes (including on-line) in herbology. Adequate focus (almost half the text) on history, background, and clinical guides before getting into Materia Medica (full monographs of 45 herbs; I chose 22 of these as class examples). Contains extensive references unmatched in other similar texts. Has useful indexes although text could use a glossary for the numerous medical terms (some not common in U.S. practice). Some important herbs are mentioned in the clinical use guides (e.g., garlic, psyllium) but not treated in monographs. Also some herbs treated are not approved by Commission E or other regulatories (may or may not be important). Overall the best we've seen in clinical herbal texts.
This is THE text on contemporary herbal medicine.......2003-03-21
Kerry Bone, one of Australia's most eminent herbalists, and Simon Mills, a highly respected practitioner from the UK have joined forces to produce a text that was sorely needed by herbalists and naturopaths everywhere.
The information is concise, clear, up-to-date, gives clear scientific explanations for the actions of herbs, while acknowledging traditional usage and folklore.
This is not just another coffee table book about herbs - it's the real thing. I have completed five years of formal training in herbal medicine, and this has been the most extraordinary book I've encountered. If you are studying complementary medicine of any modality, I highly recommend you buy it. If you're a student or graduate naturopath or herbalist, it is essential.
Textbook for Natural Health Professionals.......2001-08-26
This book is essential for those seiously interested in herbal medicine. The book begins by explaining various therapeutic systems and basic principles of treatment and safety for the health care professional. Plant compounds and their effects on the body are explained in a straight forward manner that helps one understand a subject that is usually quite difficult. The materia medica section (plant monographs) lists 45 herbs and the pertinent information necessary to use them with success and safety. I believe this book is as good as it gets in herbal medicine, I can't wait for more plant monograph information from Mills and Bone.

A must-have herbal book.......2000-11-09
I am so impressed with this book that I really recommend it to anyone interested in herbal medicine. It is very easy to use as it is arranged alphabetically (as the title of dictionary suggests) and it allows you to look up either the common or botanical name of the plant and gives all the essential information regarding the properties, appearance, habitat, actions and usages (including dosage). The book is definitely an asset to any personal reference library.
Excellent well thought out insight into complete health.......1998-06-08
I purchased this book after borrowing one from the library. It has been the most dependable source of information for my recovery. I have been suffering food and chemical toxicity for twenty years(undiagnosed until one year ago prompted by my own investigations) and although I had already gleaned some ideas for recovery from the internet this book followed all the principles I obtained from the immunological, gatroenterological, neurotoxicological and physiological web sources. I cannot emphasise the value of this tome enough. It is marvellous that information exists other than that available from GP's which I found to be nil or plain verbal abuse. This book is for those who believe in their own life and health and don't just want to entrust these to GP's who basically only offer palliative care or ignorance.

In this informative and well-organized herbal-remedy guide, Hilary Page Self writes from her years of experience using herbal remedies and alternative therapies for common ailments and injuries of her horses as well as using herbs to enhance their overall health. The author never "plays veterinarian," and encourages the consultation of a qualified veterinarian for serious illness and injury. Along with providing a list of common ailments and injuries that can be effectively treated with herbal medicine, the author gives a list of 50 readily obtainable herbs and plant-based remedies that have been useful and proven effective in the treatment of her horses. Detailed advice is given on how to make herbal preparations to be administered orally as well as on the use of herbs in making poultices and compresses. Throughout the book, the author describes situations whereby horses and ponies, if left in the wild, seek out certain plant substances to feed on depending upon what they need nutritionally. She firmly believes that an accepting and positive change in human attitudes toward herbal remedies will ultimately benefit the overall health of horses and that the use of herbal medicine for horses and other animals does not have to be at odds with modern veterinary methods. --Julia King

Customer Reviews:
A wonderful reference.......2004-07-05
I really enjoy using this book. My 29 year old gelding has found new vigor from the suggested herbs, and my son's 2 year old mare is in peak condition thanks to black oil sunflower seeds and other recommendations. I recommend this book to anyone with horses who's interested in helping them to stay happy and healthy into old age.
Excellent reference for every horse owner.......2000-06-28
The herbs that Hilary Self writes about really do work. I've used this book with great results, bringing back to ridability an old horse that was lame and unridable for 5 years, calming another that spooked too easily, helping sinus congestion on another...and more. Not all viable horse herbs are covered in this book. Nevertheless, this excellent reference points the equestrian and veterinarian in the right direction to those that the horse will eat and digest most readily. Horses can be finicky, but she writes about the herbs they most find palatible.
Good starting point for learning about herbs and horses.......1999-08-17
This is my first book I have been able to read on herbal remedies for horses. It is conscise, with a section describing many popular herbs and their uses, along with a section of common aliments and their treatments. The information provided on other forms of alternative therapies is a little skimpy. But it is called Modern Horse Herbal, and the herbal information is excellent.
An essential addtion to every horseperson's library........1998-04-01
Hilary Page Self is a horse owner who has researched, collected and used the traditonal herbal remedies on horses. Many of the materials are readily available, and/or obtainable. A Modern Horse Herbal is written in an easy to use and clear style. Being British she also includes American terms to avoid confusion. Though only 175 pages, it is full of valuable information. It is especially useful, because she encourages the owner to work together with modern medicine, along with a qualified veterinarian.

Book Description
Medieval Herbals: The Illustrative Traditions is a new, wide-ranging and generously illustrated study of manuscript herbals produced between 600 - 1450. The book examines the two principal herbal traditions of Classical descent: the Dioscorides manuscripts in Greek, Arabic, and Latin and the Latin Herbarius of Apulcius Platonicus. It shows how, from 1300, the illustrations of the de herbis Traetatus treatises, the first of which was British Library, MS. Egerton 747, showed a new observation of nature, paving the way in the fifteenth century for French Livres des Simples and the magnificent plant paintings of later Italian Herbals. Medieval Herbals provides one of the few syntheses in English of existing research on the subject and also addresses issues of dating, location, production and ownership of the individual codices. Minta Collins demonstrates how many herbals were not only codices for medical scholars but expensively illustrated books for bibliophiles, of equal interest to students of manuscripts, to historians of medicine and botany, and to art historians.

Book Description
"The appeal of such a work will be wide, encompassing professionals and laymen alike. The book is the type which a visitor to Pompeii, or to Italy generally, would want to take along as a
vade mecum [guidebook]."
Robert I. Curtis, Professor of Classics, University of Georgia
When workmen excavating the ruins of Pompeii eagerly gathered the native medicinal plants growing there, Wilhelmina Jashemski discovered that this was another example of the continuity of life in the shadow of Vesuvius. Many of the plants used for herbal medicine around Pompeii today are the same ones that ancient authorities such as Pliny the Elder and Dioscorides recommended for treating the same types of disorders.
In this book, Jashemski presents an herbal of thirty-six medicinal plants, most of them known to the ancients and still employed today. She describes each plant's contemporary medicinal uses and compares them to ancient practices as recorded in literary sources. Scientific, English, and Italian names and the plant's mythological associations complete the entries, while elegant, full-page portraits depict each plant visually.
Customer Reviews:
Informative, beautiful book with lovely photos/illustrations.......2005-05-12
My boss, who teaches graduate studies at UMD where Professor Jashemski also taught for many years recommended her works to me because he knew I had a keen interest in herbal medicine as well as archeology. A POMPEIAN HERBAL was published in 1999, a few short years after THE GARDENS OF POMPEII, HERCULANEUM, AND THE VILLAS DESTROYED BY VESUVIUS, which Jashemski co-edited with Frederick Meyer -- and a masterpiece on this topic and era -- was published.
The Pompeii Herbal demonstrates that medicinal plants have been around thousands of years, and in use until modern petrochemical compounds came on the scene. Furthermore, when Jashemski was working at Pompeii, she discovered the locals around and near Pompeii continued to use medicinal plants noted by the Romans, demonstrating yet again that herbal medicine and homeopathic remedies in use to day are not new. The book includes an informative text about ancient Roman medicinal uses of plants, many lovely photos of the work site and micron photos of seeds, pollens, etc., as well as illustrations of the noted plants.
I discovered reading Jashemski's book that many of the plants used by the ancient Romans grow in my own back yard or in pots - under my care of course, as they are not native to my area: Artemesia, Calamintha nepeta (cat mint), Centranthus ruber, Citrus limon. Foeniculum vulgare (Fennel) and Petroselinum crispum (Parsley) to name a few.
