Customer Reviews:
A quick read, but that is all.......2007-05-29
This is not a bad spy novel, and in fact it moves along at a brisk pace and retains the reader's interest. However, this one also lacks any particularly distinguishing characteristics. It is a rather formulaic spy story, and that is pretty much the end of it.
Littell's penchant for eccentric characters is present in this novel, but here it seems somewhat contrived, and I found it irritating rather than refreshing.
My main criticism of this one is that it lacks that strong sense of authenticity that author Littell often brings to his spy novels. I just did not find this one to be particularly convincing or authentic. And unfortunately, it contains a formula that Littell has overused in any event--the notion that both sides of the Cold War were bad guys, equally unscrupulous, etc. Maybe this notion was "fresh" in the 1970s. It comes across as old and stale today. Well, times change, I suppose. A similar formula in Littell's "The Amateur" works out better.
This is a beer and chips novel for a lazy afternoon, which is exactly how I read it.
A short story for Littell.......2006-08-11
Littell seems to know the CIA. A slim volume compared to "The Company". A quick and interesting read.
Just enough of a twist.......2003-07-13
On the surface this story works as a great cold war thriller or even a detective story.
A defecting Soviet major carrying a pouch of "goodies" -- intel secrets -- has to be verified by a small, special Pentagon group headed man known only as Stone. Stone doesn't think the major is the real deal (or "real fig" so to speak).
Littell does a great job of layering all sorts of intrigue and depth into this slim book. At about 200 pages (250 for the paperback) this book is short compared to Littell's 2002 tome entitled "The Company." But every word counts.
I don't want to give anything away, but if you like the twists Rod Serling brought to his television plays then you'll love The Debriefing. If you like just straightforward spy stories, then this one will work for you, too.
It's a great book.

Book Description
Is your child afraid?
There are many traumatic experiences that cause a child to become scared—from divorce to the death of a loved one, from natural disasters to abuse. Even a disturbing news event that a child only sees on television or hears about but does not experience, such as the Oklahoma City bombing or the classroom massacre in Scotland, can make a child fearful or sad. No matter what causes the situation, childhood trauma is common and should be dealt with quickly and effectively.
Dr. Barbara Brooks, a psychologist who has successfully helped kids through all types of traumatic situations, provides you with the knowledge you need to put the child you love back on the path to a full and happy life. Kids don't always know how to react to feelings of distress. If these scared feelings are not expressed in a positive way, they can surface later in life when dealing with them becomes more difficult.
Here are detailed instructions, based on professional techniques, to encourage kids of any age—from toddler to teenager—to reveal their feelings through words, drawings, and role playing with step-by-step advice for reassuring them and helping them let go of their fear.

I'm earning my degree in counseling and will be working with adults and children who have experienced trauma. This book is excellent. It's geared toward parents and provides easy-to-read, thoughtful advice on how to talk to children about some very difficult issues. It provides typical reactions for each age group for each situation and great advice on how to speak to and reassure the child. The author brings her characters alive as Native, First Nation, Peoples interact with Dr. T., her friends and colleagues, in this fast paced edgy novel.

Navajo Heat is intense.......2006-10-29
I am an avid reader and I haven't read a book that grabbed my attention so quickly. From the first page you begin to feel like you've known the characters personally. You feel their joys, their sorrows, their deep abiding love for one another, the sexual tension that culminates in some of the most sensual love scenes I've read. Mary Helen Madrid-Null writes these characters from her heart. You begin to feel as though you're a part of the story as it leaps from the pages to pull you in. Mary Helen Madrid-Null is truly a gifted writer, knowledgable and sensitive to the Navajo culture and it's customs. Using her own past experiences in critical care, and end of life issues, as well as being a Death Specialist herself, she uses these experiences to bring the story of Ben and Theresa to life, making both the characters and story 3 dimensional instead of just characters on a page. I am truly excited to see what the next stage will be for these characters as they continue on the path that has been destined for them.
Exhilarating.......2006-10-16
This book is absolutely amazing! Sensual, sexy, spiritual. Mary Helen takes you places you have longed for with a command of the English language that will take your breath away. She takes her experiences as a critical care nurse and critical incident stress specialist amd applies them in a way few people can. The characters literally leap out of the pages and into your mind. If you are a fan of Tony Hillerman, you will definetly become a fan of Mary Helen's. Your journey will take you where few others have dared to venture.
Book Description
Seven documents generated by the master spy Walter G. Krivitsky. The first five, translated from Russian, record his 1937 defection, describe Stalin's police state and exemplify methods of intelligence analysis. The next two, originally in English, explain the instruments of the Soviet government and detail the methods of its intelligence agencies, both military and civil. Taken together, the seven documents provide a succinct exposition of the totalitarian system of control, one that may have application to intelligence structures in existence today. The last and longest document, Krivitsky's debriefing in January 1940 by MI5 (British counterintelligence), served as an intelligence primer for generations of MI5 trainees. It was declassified only in June 2002.
The collection is edited, annotated and translated from Russian by Gary Kern, translator of This I Cannot Forget: The Memoirs of Nikolai Bukharin's Widow by Anna Larina (Norton, 1998) and author of the highly acclaimed A Death in Washington: Walter G. Krivitsky and the Stalin Terror (Enigma Books, 2003).
Customer Reviews:
Primary source documents.......2006-06-28
Gary Kern is a very serious researcher and a Krivitsky specialist so it was a very good idea to publish the original PRO files and other documents. This is what a leading intelligence expert, Prof. Hayden Peake, writes about the book: "These are primary source documents. One can learn from them how an interrogation is conducted, what items should be covered, and how they should be reported. They should be of great interest and real value to students, counterintelligence analysts, and all those who continue to marvel at the early days of counterintelligence in America." I would like to add that from Krivitsky's debrifings one can see how little MI5 knew about the Soviet intelligence, both the NKVD and the Fourth Department, but what is most amazing - how little Krivitsky himself knew about Soviet secret services. All what he revealed about their structure and personnel is false. His correct information only concerned several Soviet spies and illegals. This led to several arrests but the "big picture" had been concealed until... probably today.
Original-source spy material.......2005-02-04
For anyone who has a taste for nonfiction reading about spycraft and who knows who Soviet spy-defector Walter Krivitsky
was, operating during the height of Soviet spying pre-World War II, would naturally prefer to see original-source documents about him. This is what this excellent collection of secret documents does. They are organized by the leading U.S. authority on matters concerning this intriguing character, Krivitsky: Author Gary Kern. Mr. Kern has translated these materials from Russian into English for the first time, thus making the compilation unique and indispensable to serious readers.

Book Description
The United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET) which had effectively 'ruled' that territory for two and a half years handed over the country's administration to the government of the newly-independent Democratic Republic of East Timor on May 20, 2002. Praised as one of the most comprehensive and successful nation building operations of the United Nations, UNTAET had the challenging task of facilitating the creation of a new country from virtually non-existent institutional foundations, following a traumatic period of violence and civil war. A group of eminent scholars and practitioners, many deeply and personally involved with UNTAET, came together in a closed-door gathering in Tokyo in September 2002, to review the achievements and shortcomings of UNTAET, and to understand the lessons of hope that it may carry for other nations emerging from war and destruction. The conference reflected on the intense debates held at the United Nations Security Council in New York and at key capitals around the world leading to the creation of UNTAET. It also dealt with the manner in which the mission unfolded, operated, and the level of reconstruction achieved when East Timor was handed over to its people. This volume forms a lively and indispensable reading to experts or laypersons interested in current affairs in general and in post-war nation building in particular.
