Reading a Christopher Moore novel is a little like eating a potato chip--it's hard to stop at just one. And you don't have to look beyond the titles to understand the allure; who could pass up a book called Practical Demonkeeping or Island of the Sequined Love Nun? Each of Moore's tales skewers a particular literary genre. In Coyote Blue he nailed New Age fascination with Native American religion; in Blood-Sucking Fiends: A Love Story he put a new twist on the classic vampire tale. The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove is a companion piece to his first novel, the hilariously twisted horror story Practical Demonkeeping, and readers of that book will recognize the setting, Pine Cove, California. In addition, Moore includes plenty of his patented weird sex, occasional gross-out death, several off-kilter but nonetheless affecting love stories, and some fabulous secondary characters such as Mavis Sand:
Mavis first began augmenting her parts in the fifties, first out of vanity: breasts, eyelashes, hair. Later, as she aged and the concept of maintenance eluded her, she began having parts replaced as they failed, until almost half of her body weight was composed of stainless steel (hips, elbows, shoulders, finger joints, rods fused to vertebrae five through twelve), silicon wafers (hearing aids, pacemaker, insulin pump), advanced polymer resins (cataract replacement lenses, dentures), Kevlar fabric (abdominal wall reinforcement), titanium (knees, ankles), and pork (ventricular heart valve).
In a nutshell, the plot revolves around a gigantic prehistoric lizard whose slumber deep beneath the ocean surface is interrupted by a radioactive leak from a nearby power plant. At the same time, a woman in Pine Cove hangs herself; the local psychiatrist (who has been prescribing antidepressants to everyone in town with gay abandon) decides the suicide was her fault and yanks everyone's medication; and an elderly black blues singer named Catfish Jefferson arrives to perform at the Head of the Slug saloon. Into this already strange brew mix one schizoid former B-movie starlet, a pot-head town constable, a bereaved local artist, a biologist tracking anomalous behavior in rats, a crooked sheriff, and a pharmacist with a bizarre sexual fixation on sea mammals, and you have a recipe for the kind of madness Moore does so well. --Alix Wilber

Book Description

The town psychiatrist has decided to switch everybody in Pine Cove, California, from their normal antidepressants to placebos, so naturally—well, to be accurate, artificially—business is booming at the local blues bar. Trouble is, those lonely slide-guitar notes have also attracted a colossal sea beast named Steve with, shall we say, a thing for explosive oil tanker trucks. Suddenly, morose Pine Cove turns libidinous and is hit by a mysterious crime wave, and a beleaguered constable has to fight off his own gonzo appetites to find out what's wrong and what, if anything, to do about it.

5 out of 5 stars Steve!.......2007-09-22

Moore's 5th novel takes us back to the town and surrounding area where his career kicked off, Pine Cove. A few of the main characters from Practical Demonkeeping return but the main stars of this one are fresh, eccentric and very enjoyable to read about. A stand alone novel, not a sequel to his first novel, reading this book before that one won't spoil anything!

It's the off season tourist wise in Pine Cove but a leaking pipe from a Californian Power Plant attracts a tourist even bigger than your normal American human one. When a fuel truck gets angry with him he must take refuge in trailer park to recover and wonder why she couldn't just have told him no! Meanwhile a psychiatrist decides to switch all her patients' drugs with placebos resulting in hilarious consequences for the town but great business for the Slug (town bar). The town rent a cop is addicted to pot. A former B grade movie star existing as a crazy woman is getting attached to her new neighbour in more ways than one. Throw in a nerdy guy obsessed with finding out why his microchiped rats fled town and the whole town suddenly getting their libido back and you've got one hilarious tale. You've got to get all of his books!

If you like the surreal eccentric character comedy novels also check out the authors Bill Fitzhugh (Pest Control's a great place to start), Carl Hiassen (Stormy Weather's as good as any other), Dave Barry (Tricky Business) and Max Barry (Syrup).

3 out of 5 stars Putting humor on the scales.......2007-07-28

After Harry Leon Wilson died in 1940, American comic novels stopped being funny about people. They didn't stop being funny.

But if they were writing about real people, the fun ended in tragedy, so that we had the comitragic novels of Peter de Vries. Or they wrote about giant monsters of amorphous instincts and physiology, like Christopher Moore in "The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove."

This is, at least, funny. Some recent comic novels are either disgusting or puzzling without being fun.

Moore is a little puzzling. He appears to be making some point about psychotropic medicine, but I can't figure out what. And it is at least a little disgusting that his protagonist eats so many people.

Moore is a stylish writer and every chapter or two he gets off an amusing line. The plot is clever although Moore does have an irritating habit of forgetting what he wrote one or two pages earlier so that characters have to be in two places at once.

Ah, well, I cared enough about the poor monster to finish the book. I can't say as much about very many other recent comic novels.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Moore.......2007-06-06

If you are a fan of Moore's other books, you will recognize some common characters. Set a little earlier than his "The Stupidest Angel", the book never disappoints. Outrageous characters, great story, and unbelievable laughter on each page. No one makes me laugh out loud like Christopher Moore.

5 out of 5 stars What's not to love about a Moore Novel?.......2007-04-02

So far, I've read probably 2/3rds of Moore's offerings and I have to say, each one is thoroughly entertaining. Lust Lizard is no exception! Moore has the uncanny ability to take the most offbeat topics and turn them into great books.

In many ways, I feel the people of Pine Cove (Pine Cove is to Moore as Castle Rock is to Stephen King...a recurring locale where the unusual happens to ordinary people) are much like those kids from South Park where strange and unusal things happen and no one really questions the underlying idea of what's going on....but the characters just deal with the present crisis. No one in Lust Lizard really gets overly excited about the propsect of some ancient sea creature gobbling up Pine Cove denizens, rather the characters just sort of accept the "reality" and deal with it.

Moore has a strange sense of humor (well, strange to some at least) and if you have read any of his other books then you are quite prepared to pick this book up. Ever since reading Lamb, I've been on a non-stop tear to get through all of Moore's books. Its not that he's a modern-day literary genius, or that his works will be critically acclaimed as modern day masterpieces, its because they are pure entertainmnet and hard to put down. Honestly, every time I've ever read a review that says such and such a book is "non-stop hilarious, you'll laugh out loud" I rarely, if ever do. However, in the case of Moore's books, I find myself repeatedly laughing out loud (much to the amusement of those around me) and Lust Lizard was no exception.

In short, I loved this book and you will too!

5 out of 5 stars hmm.......2007-03-23

Well I wouldn't say this book is for kids but it is truly amazing how much detail and whittyness went into this book. This book I could not put down! I finished it in two days! its truly funny and good.

3 out of 5 stars 44 Cranberry Point.......2007-05-13

I purchased all six in this series. I read all six and a 7th one comes out the fall of 2007. I enjoyed the pleasant story of a small town but after six books I felt the pattern of the writing got very repetative. Most of the following books spent time filling you in on the events that took place earlier and repeated who was related to who. After awhile, this detracted from the light plot to the point of becoming annoying. If you want a fast, lazy summer read at least the first three books are good just for fun.

5 out of 5 stars Visit Old Friends in Fourth Cedar Cove Book.......2007-01-29

The characters I have grown to enjoy through the first three Cedar Cove books are all back and moving forward/backward in their lives. Opening the pages of this book was like going home to visit with these dear friends I've become very fond of. Debbie Macomber has not only given us another visit to this charming town and added new dimensions to the characters, but also provides us with a suspenseful resolution to the murder that occurred back in book one.

The focal point of this story is the home of Peggy and Bob Beldon who manage the Thyme and Tide B and B at 44 Cranberry Point. Nerves have been on edge with Peggy and Bob since a fellow Vietnam soldier, Max Russell, was found murdered at the inn. Bob, a recovering alcoholic, has the biggest challenge of his sober years when the need for a drink overtakes him. Will he manage to control himself or will he throw away all his hard work and good intentions?

Judge Olivia Lockhart of 16 Lighthouse Road is back from her honeymoon with newspaper editor Jack Griffin, but the adjustment period is harder than either imagined. Can a neat freak health nut live in harmony with a sloppy fast-foot addict?

Maryellen and Jon Bowman finally marry and seem happy with daughter Katie. But will the arrival of Jon's parents disrupt their happy home? Can the disowned son ever forgive his parents' betrayal? Jon is stubborn and it will take a major tragedy to get him to even consider reconciliation.

Grace Sherman has made a decision and Cliff Harding is the one she wants. Alas, Grace's internet romance with Will Jefferson may have ended any hopes for a life with Cliff. When Will visits Cedar Cove, what will Grace do?

Romance is in the air for septuagenarians Charlotte Jefferson and Ben Rhodes, but will a background search uncover facts about Ben that would stand in the way of this romance?

Ian Randall is home on leave but tensions are mounting with wife Cecilia. Will they put their grief over losing daughter Allison in perspective and be ready to try to have another child?

Private investigator Roy McAfee has been getting strange and rather threatening notes. A package left on his doorsteps is the ultimate cliffhanger ending and it should be no surprise to followers of this series that the spotlight will now shift to the McAfee home at 50 Harbor Street for the next installment in the series.

In addition to the main characters, minor characters such as Rachel the nail tech, widower Bruce Peyton, Stanley Lockhart and others make appearances and propel the storyline, thanks in large part to a hilarious Dog and Bachelor auction which makes matches and mismatches aplenty.

Debbie Macomber has given us the perfect soap opera in book form and I eagerly look forward to each new installment. I would advise readers to begin at the beginning to eliminate any confusion in this multi-populated series.

5 out of 5 stars Another Good Installment.......2006-11-14

The mystery of the B&B is solved althought the killer became obvious it was still fun to read. Charlotte got a love interest, Maryellen moved forward with her life with Jon and their daughter. Cecelia decided it was time for another baby but Ian didn't quite agree. Grace had her hands full with her love interests while Olivia adjusted to life with her new husband. Read and enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars small town life.......2006-11-10

Macomber's work is so believable. Her characters are so real, with interesting problems. 44 Cranberry Point makes me wish I lived there. I always enjoy her work.

Perennial favorite Debbie Macomber does what she does best in 16 Lighthouse Road, introducing fans to the scenic Pacific Northwest town of Cedar Cove, Washington, and its panoply of characters, including family court judge Olivia Lockhart who makes news when she denies the divorce petition of Cecilia and Ian Randall. Decreeing that the young couple had not tried hard enough to make their relationship work following the tragic death of their newborn daughter, Olivia's decision brings her to the attention of recent Cedar Cove arrival, newspaper editor Jack Griffin. And Jack's attentions are not entirely unwelcome for the long-divorced Olivia. In addition to her continued involvement in Cecilia and Ian's ongoing negotiations, Olivia's life is further complicated by her mother, Charlotte, her daughter, Justine, and her best friend, Grace, as they struggle with the difficult situations life tosses their way. Charlotte becomes enmeshed in trying to solve a mystery left to her by a mute stroke victim she befriends just before he dies. Justine has found the perfect man for her, one who shares her ambitions and thoughts on relationships, but why does she keep thinking about the boy she knew in high school who has grown into quite a man? And Grace's husband, Dan, has disappeared--again--and Grace has no idea where he is and when or if he'll be back. The multiple story lines and numerous relationships make reading at times challenging, but Macomber fans, old and new, will stand up and cheer as the prolific author lodges her protest against the disposable personal relationships all too common today. --Alison Trinkle

Book Description

Olivia Lockhart

16 Lighthouse Road

Cedar Cove, Washington

Dear Reader,

You don't know me yet, but in a few hours that's going to change. You see, I'm inviting you to my home and my town of Cedar Cove because I want you to meet my family, friends, and neighbors. Come and hear their stories -- maybe even their secrets!

I have to admit that my own secrets are pretty open. My marriage failed some years ago, and I have a rather . . . difficult relationship with my daughter, Justine. Then there's my mother, Charlotte, who has plenty of opinions and is always willing to share them.

Here's an example: I'm a family court judge and she likes to drop in on my courtroom. Recently I was hearing a divorce petition. In Charlotte's view, young Cecilia and Ian Randall hadn't tried hard enough to make their marriage work -- and I agreed. So I rendered my judgement: Divorce Denied.

Well, you wouldn't believe the reaction! Thanks to an article by Jack Griffin, the editor of our local paper (and a man I wouldn't mind seeing more of!), everyone's talking.

Cedar Cove -- people love it and sometimes they leave it, but they never forget it!

See you soon . . .

Olivia

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read.......2007-08-11

I could not put this book down it is that good. The way Ms. Macomber weaves the story lines of the characters is fantastic. I feel as though I know each character and can hardly wait to see what happens next.

In addition, I can truly visualize Cedar Cove and want to visit in person!

I highly recommend this title/series

This is the second series of Ms. Macomber's that I am reading, she is fast becoming my favorite author.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful new series by Ms. Macomber.......2007-06-05

In this new series, Ms. Macomber introduces us to a new series. The series takes place in Cedar Cove, Washington, a scenic little town where the people are interesting and their stories could be real. The series follows the people who live in the title address and the characters they interact with. In this book we meet Olivia Lockhart, who lives at 16 Lighthouse Road. Olivia is a family court judge who makes news when she denies a prenuptial agreement dissolution for a couple, Cecilia and Ian Randall, who are seeking a divorce after the tragic death of their newborn daughter. We also meet Olivia's mother, Charlotte who makes friends with a stroke victim, Olivia's daughter Justine who is in a relationship with a much older man who is also drawn to an old schoolmate. We meet Grace, Olivia's best friend, who is dealing with the disappearance of her husband and the newly arrived newspaper editor Jack Griffin. Olivia finds herself drawn to Jack and they start to see one another. As they work through their relationship, we also get an inside view to many other relationships at work through the town.

Ms. Macomber draws us into a wonderful new world where the people jump off the page at you and are extremely likeable. I enjoyed the first book to the series and enjoyed meeting all the new characters. As Ms. Macomber leaves us wanting more with the other storylines, I am quite glad to say that Ms. Macomber continues with many more books in the series, including 74 Seaside Avenue, which releases in August of 2007. I have placed this book in my "keep library" with the rest of this series and would encourage anyone who enjoys a good, contemporary, series to pick this book, and the rest of the series, up.

5 out of 5 stars Macomber creates a series classic.......2006-11-23

As a relative newbie to the works of Debbie Macomber, i have to say, she has yet to disappoint me. With this novel, the first in her Ceder Cove series, she has made me a devoted fan for life. I literally sat down with this book, and was unable to put it down until i was finished.

"16 Lighthouse Rd" introduces us to some incredibly memorable characters.
Olvia: Family court judge, who's torn between her feelings for the new editor of the local newspaper, and her ex.
Charlotte: Olivia's mother, who goes in search of the family of a recently decesed friend.
Grace: Olivia's best friend, who is dealing with a pregnant daughter, and the mysterious disappearence of her husband of 35 years.
Cecilia & Ian: a young married couple who struggle to deal with their demons after the death of their newborn baby
Justine, Seth & Warren: an unusual love triangle, that will definitely have you rooting for her to make the right choice.

There are many more wonderful characters here, and their interweaving storylines mesh perfectly together. All i can say is that with the Ceder Cove series, Macomber has created a wonderful family that i can't wait to visit and spend time with again.

4 out of 5 stars Easy and Heartwarming.......2006-11-14

In this first of the Cedar Cove series, easy-to-ready author Debbie Macomber introduces the reader to a Pacific Northwest town that sounds just about perfect. Cedar Cove, Washington, is a quirky blend of old-time Main Street and 21-st century real-life modern problems, in a combination that makes "16 Lighthouse Road" impossible to put down.

In this book, we meet family court judge Olivia -- whose unexpected ruling in the divorce trial of young navy couple Cecilia and Ian draws the reader right into the heart of the town. Then there is Olivia's irrascible mother Charlotte, who likes to sit in the courtroom and knit, and Olivia's dear friend Grace, whose husband is acting extremely strangely.

Just put up your feet, make a cup of tea, and try not to wish that real life had such easy solutions. This is just a delightful treat, nothing more, nothing less, just perfect.

5 out of 5 stars Five Stars .......2006-11-03

A great beginning to the series. Judge Olivia Lockhart denies Ian and Cecelia Randall their divorce because she feels they're still in love and are making a terrible decision in haste she's also attracted to newspaper man Jack Griffin. Ian and Cecelia met and married quickly due to Cecelia's pregnancy but their baby girl died a few hours after being born. Cecelia was left to handle the birth and death alone Ian was away in the Navy and wasn't told of anything after their daughter was dead and buried. Charlotte Jefferson mets a stroke victum Tom Harding they become friends despite the fact Tom can't speak. Grace Sherman's dealing with husband who keeps disappearing on her and shutting her. Olivia's worries over her daughter Justine who's dating a man who's much older then her as much as Olivia tries to support her daughter living her own life Olivia feels Justine's making a mistake. The end left you wanting to read more.

Book Description

Dear Reader,

I'm living a life I couldn't even have dreamed of a few years ago. I'm married to Bobby Polgar now (you know, the famous chess champion who just happens to be the man I love!). And we've got this beautiful house with a view of Puget Sound.

Lately something's been worrying Bobby, though. When I asked, he said he was 'protecting his queen' and I got the oddest feeling he wasn't talking about chess but about me. He wouldn't say anything else.

Do you remember Get Nailed, the beauty salon in Cedar Cove? I still work there. I'll tell you about my friend Rachel, who's got two men interested in her (count 'em, two). And I'll let you in on what I've heard about Linnette McAfee, who left town when her love life fell apart. (That kind of trouble I know all about.) Come in soon for a manicure and a chat, okay?

I am a huge fan of Debbie Macomber and her books especially her cedar grove collection. This 7th book in the series starts out slowly but by the 75th-100th page, the reading becomes fast paced and the storyline is riveting. As soon as you get into this book, the book ends leaving you panting for more until the 8th book in this series is released next September 2008! Enjoy! Tara from Brooklyn, NY

3 out of 5 stars Life in Cedar Grove.......2007-09-29

I should have been forwarned when an editorial review said it was "gossipy writing." I could not find a central plot to focus on as the story switched from one person to another carrying forward the lives of various people. It is well written, and I would recommend it for soap opera fans, but it is not my type novel.

Rosie Cox
311 Pelican Court
Cedar Grove, Washington

Dear Reader,

One ting about Cedar Grove -- people sure are interested in what other people are doing. Take me, for instance. Everybody in the town knows that my husband, Zach, and I recently got a divorce. Everybody also know that Judge Olivia Lockhard decreed a pretty unusual custody arrangement. It won't be the kids moving between my place and Zach's. We're the ones who'll be going back and forth!

Olivia isn't immune to gossip herself. Will she stay with Jack, the guy who runs our local paper, or will she get back with her ex? Inquiring minds want to know!

But the really big gossip has to do with the dead guy -- the man who died at a local bed-and-breakfast. Who is he and why did he show up there in the middle of the night? Roy McAfee, our local private investigator, is absolutely determined to find out. I hope he does -- and then I'll let you know! See you soon. . .

5 out of 5 stars The Cove.......2007-09-20

I am assuming that this book was actually the first of the FBI series. I was especially interested in first learning of Dillon Savich. It was fun to see that he has always been a "computer nerd" who drove a red Porche! Yes! It was fantastic! I just love Catherine Coulter's writing. I am resonably certain that I have read everything she has ever written. I especially like the characters and problems/situation in which they find themselves. The resolutions are unique and quite satisfying. I eagerly await more--particularly those that involve the Savichs in ANY shape form or fashion. To see some of her books and characters come alive on TV was also quite satisfying. Hopefully, some of the FBI series would be made into TV movies as well, please?

5 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2007-05-10

This was an amazing book. It was the first book of hers that I read that was not a historical romance and I was very pleasantly surprised by it. Great job!

5 out of 5 stars These are fun books.......2007-04-09

I started reading Catherine Coulter's FBI series from the beginning with this book, "The Cove". I started it two weeks ago. I have read "The Maze" and "The Target" and just started "The Edge". I have read many complaints about her books, how unrealistic some of the stories have been. But I love these books.

They are fun to read. Don't analyze the books, just have fun. I have had a hard time putting them down. "Sorry Shadow (my blue merle collie), but mom is reading her book - just lay down beside me so I can pet and read at the same time".

5 out of 5 stars No Wonder This Was Just The Beginning Of The Series........2007-02-21

I had picked up "Blindside" and read it, and took Catherine Coulter's invitation to e-mail her my thoughts. She e-mailed back and suggested I read "The Cove" which I did, and enjoyed (in case you can't tell from the five stars). If you like suspense, I would recommend it, with the caveat of there being language in it I would never use and what another reviewer referred to as gratitious sex (I agree with that accessment).

You are about to enter the spoiler zone -- enter it at your own risk. Okay?

Comparing this with Blindside, I have some comments.

First, both have several things in common. There is a whirlwind romance in both novels, resulting in marriage, with the major character of the story, though those characters are not the main character of the series, Dillon Savitch. Both have a major story and a minor story, though this one has some tie-ins between the two other than the FBI's involvement.

Second, let me share something that concerns me about both of these novels. In "Blindside" (again, we are in spoiler territory) is a minister. In "The Cove", there is also a minister, and I had a hunch he would be the lead bad guy. My hunch about him being the lead was wrong, but I was right that he was a bad guy. Being an ordained minister, I find it bothersome that people who share my love for sharing the word of God are always the bad guys; I consider this unrealistic, disinformation, and prejudiced against people like myself. I doubt Coulter or any other author would regularly cast African Americans or gays or Muslims as bad guys; why are Christians (like myself) and conservatives (again, like myself) fair game for being negatively sterotyped and the other groups aren't?

Having stated this concern, there are positive things I would comment. First, Coulter seems to have a favorable view of marriage: as I said, the main hero and the main heroine are married in both books I've read, as opposed to the book ending up with a non-committed sexual relationship. I wish more authors would promote marriage like this. Second, there is a jab on the Antagonistic Crazy Loons Unleashed (yes, I know that the initials ACLU stand for something else, but I believe mine is more accurate, as is Jay Sekulow's term Anti-Christian Litigation Unit).

If you can tolerate language and sex and violence and like a thriller, go for this book. It does leave you guessing.

2 out of 5 stars Can you spell LAME?.......2006-11-10

I have now read several of Catherine Coulter's books...The Target, The Cove, and The Edge. I read The Cove first and since it appeared to be her first novel, I thought I'd give her another chance by reading several more before judging her as an author based on a single read. Unfortunately, her later works really didn't get any better. I was disappointed on almost every front and to be blunt, I'm just not impressed with her as an author. Frankly, the material seems incredibly amateurish on just about every level. When I finish her books I have an interesting mix of feeling both entertained and ripped off at the same time.

Although she does a reasonably good job of developing heroes and heroines that you root for, and it is nice to see many of the characters perpetuated from book to book, my problem with all of her books thus far are two-fold: 1) the plots are not just fanciful, they are downright corny and lack any kind of plausibility 2) The sex seems to be completely gratuitous. In all, they just read to me like really bad "B" movies where the story line is mostly secondary to the sex and special effects. Basically, her books over-promise with these breathless covers and liner notes, and then under-deliver.

First, I'll point out something that is more of a pet peeve for me than a major gripe, and perhaps won't bother other readers as much. However, I still found it annoying. The Cove and The Edge both take place on the Oregon coast...an area I am very familiar with because I grew up in Oregon and visited the coast frequently. In both, we're led to believe sunny, warm, windless days are fairly common. I can tell you from experience that a day like that occurs *maybe* three times a year on the Oregon coast. I've never been to Ireland, but you need to think more in terms of that coastline...treeless, windswept, mostly barren, and with absolutely brutal weather...usually cold and gray...and wind gales that can rip your car door off its hinges. The occasional tree you might find tends to be arthritic and gnarled because it is forced to grow in a hurricane-like environment. Coulter would have us believe that veritable forests of tranquil pines and spruce are growing within feet of the rocky coastal cliffs. Just not reality...sorry.

Of more concern to me is that her plots are just not plausible. They strike me as someone in junior high trying to make up a suspense story around the campfire...it simultaneously makes you groan at the absurdity while you end up hanging around for the whole thing to finish because it has just enough infrequent moments that keep you hooked. ***SPOILER WARNING*** In The Cove, for example, we're led to believe that an entire town has conspired successfully for a number of years to kill tourists and thereby make enough "revenue" to spruce up their community and turn it into a tourist destination. Uh, pardon me, but the premise here is just plain loony. How exactly does killing a couple of tourists a year, even wealthy ones, provide enough revenue to underwrite the infrastructure improvements of even the smallest town? Let's say the little old couple they decide to knock off is carrying even $5000 in cash...which would be quite a stretch in this age of credit cards, ATMs, and travelers checks. Last time I checked, $5K wouldn't go very far in terms of keeping every building in the village painted, landscaped, and maintained. Sorry, Catherine. It just can't possibly work on any level. I love imagination as much as the next person, and I'm willing to stretch quite a bit in the name of entertainment without demanding absolute authenticity and painstaking detail, but come on -- the average couple would have had to have their trunk stuffed with bags of cash to make this work. When I got to the final page, the only word that kept running through my mind was "lame."

In the same way, in The Target, we're led to believe that a federal judge - in touchy-feely California of all places - is basically Bruce Lee under that robe and was able to disarm 3 gang bangers with AK-47s using nothing more than his bare hands. Puh-leez. Sorry, Catherine. What's next...teenage mutant ninja lawyers? You managed to lose credibility from the very first page in this one. And, as our hero stumbles across a child in the forest that has been abducted and sexually abused, he does what anyone would naturally do in such circumstances...holes her up in his cabin rather than consulting the police and a hospital. Oh yeah. That would be anyone's reaction upon finding a kidnapped child. That and getting on the next plane to Disneyland with the kid to live happily ever after.

And in The Edge, it seemed as though the characters alternate between being shot at in one second, and eating chips and salsa and playing a board game the next. What do you do after somebody makes an attempt on your life, cuts the telephone and power lines to the house, and surrounds you? Why, make coffee and chit chat about the good 'ol days of course. Just another day at the office for us FBI types, dontchaknow.

I would have expected plots like these and adult dialog in something like maybe a "Spy Kids" movie...but certainly not something intended for a reader with any level of sophistication. Sorry to be so harsh, but with so many great authors in this genre out there, I'm not sure why you would opt for Coulter's work versus the other options available.

The other thing that bothers me about her novels is that the sex often seems to be just thrown in gratuitously. Some readers will no doubt find this a plus rather than a minus, but I just found it to be out of place and nonsensical. For example, in The Edge, our hero has this unexplained moment of passion with Cal that has absolutely no connection to...well...anything in the book. It was as though it was just plopped into the story line and might as well have been prefaced by "we interrupt this story for 3 pages of sex." Cal's character is never developed from that point on...it's as though she served her purpose (a single scene where "Ugly Betty" is shown to be this wild and passionate sex kitten underneath the frump) and then she just fades into oblivion. It would have been just as out of place to have her stand up, put on a viking helmet, and begin singing the national anthem in an opera voice.

I believe Coulter came to fame primarily in the romance genre, and she has more recently branched out into the thriller genre. In my opinion though, she's not only moved beyond her comfort zone, she's moved beyond her competency zone. Her romance roots bleed over into her thrillers quite a bit - overly much in my opinion. They are basically a combination of romance, rather lame mystery plots, and liberal splashes of sometimes gratuitous sex. Others may enjoy this combination, but it just isn't the mix I was looking for.

In fairness, Coulter's mysteries aren't without their moments, and given the choice between a 4-hour flight with the seatback magazine vesus one of Coulter's books, I'd choose the book. But if you like this genre, my advice is that you can do far better with other authors. For example, check out the first several books in the series of "Kay Scarpetta" thrillers by Patricia Cornwell. Or, all of the books in the "Harry Bosch" series by Michael Connelly instead. They are more intelligent, more plausible, and ultimately more enjoyable.

6 Rainier Drive
Cedar Cove, Washington

Dear Reader,
As you may have heard, we've recently had quite a shock. My husband, Seth, and I lost our business, The Lighthouse restaurant -- to arson. The investigation continues. The prime suspect is a young ex-employee named Anson Butler, who disappeared right after the fire.

So Seth and I are trying to sort out our lives. (And let me tell you, this kind of crisis is not good for a marriage.) In the meantime, life goes on for everyone else in Cedar Cove -- with marriages, births, reunions and even the occasional scandal. One of the most interesting pieces of news is that Cal, who works on Cliff Harding's ranch, is now rescuing wild mustangs from Wyoming.

I have to run -- I'm meeting an old friend, Warren Saget, for lunch. Let's talk soon, and I'll fill you in on everything that's happening in town!

5 out of 5 stars You Feel Like Family When You Read This Book.......2007-08-02

Debbie Macomber writes an easy to read, friendly book full of news and happenings of the people who live in Cedar Cove, a fictional idyllic small town on the water. This series is a cross between a fictional book and a folksy newsletter that keeps you up to date on what's happening to the folks at home.

There's a bit of mystery in this book, and what's unusual is that there are important characters in all age groups, from the teenage daughter caught in a first love situation with the town's bad boy who is accused unjustly of committing a crime. As a counterpoint, you experience the trials, tribulations, and daily happenings of a young married couple who were victimized by a spurned suitor, and 2 mature female best friends, and their new and developing marriages. It's good to live in Cedar Cove, that small town where you always thought you'd love to live, one of those nice small towns where people look out for each other.

Debbie has the ability to make her characters so real, that you half expect them to knock on your door with a freshly baked coffee cake to share.

This is a delightful book to read, and I highly recommend this book and the entire Cedar Cove series !

3 out of 5 stars 6 Rainier Drive (Cedar Cove Series #6).......2007-07-21

I didn't like the characters in this one-Justine is very annoying and why she keeps going back to old boyfriend is beyond me. I was very glad to keep up with the series and can't wait for the next one but this book wasa disappointment. Also it wasn't hard to figure out who burned the restuarant down-that was also a disapointment.

5 out of 5 stars Satisfying continuation of a much loved series.......2007-06-30

It always amazes me how I can pick up the next book in a Debbie Macomber series months or years after finishing the last one, yet it always feels like I never left because the storylines spring right back to life! I love the Cedar Cove community and all of its wonderful members! The resolution of the arson storyline surprised me - I should have seen it coming, but I had suspected the wrong person. Well, now I'm anxiously awaiting 74 Seaside Avenue so I can continue following along with these likable character's lives!

4 out of 5 stars Sixth Installment Meets Expectations.......2007-06-05

This sixth installment of the series about a small Washington town was, again, a fun read. Macomber has a way of refreshing your memory about the previous books without causing any "oh, get on with it" frustration. We are introduced to new characters and situations and all the plot lines were moved forward while the mystery is solved that started in another book and a new mystery introduced. I have enjoyed the entire series and feel as if I know the people. The characters are engaging and real; flawed but likable. I appreciate the clever use of each character's address as a way of keeping the chronology of the series in order. I am looking forward to the 7th book out this summer (2007).

3 out of 5 stars Not up to snuff.......2007-04-10

This series is my first experience with Debbie Macomber. While the first five were fast, enjoyable reads, this one just wasn't as good. As a previous reviewer stated, the characters weren't too developed and the storyline seemed very lukewarm. I'm hoping to enjoy the old writing style in 74 Seaside Avenue.

Book Description

Grace Sherman
204 Rosewood Lane
Cedar Cove, Washington

Dear Reader,

If you've been to Cedar Cove before we've probably met. You can usually, find me either at home or at the public library, where I work. I've lived in this town all my life and raised two daughters here. But my husband and I -- well, about six months ago, he disappeared. Just . . . disappeared. Where's Dan? Why did he go? Who's he with? Will I ever find out?

My hometown, my family and friends, bring me comfort during this difficult time. Comfort and a sense of shelter. I'm continually reminded that life can and does go on. For instance, everyone's been discussing weddings and babies lately. Justine -- the only daughter of my best friend, Olivia Lockhart -- impulsively got married a little while ago. My own daughter Kelly recently had, a baby. Unfortunately, she refuses to accept that Dan might not return to see his first grandchild. My older daughter, Maryellen, is more realistic. I think she's seeing a new man, but for some reason she won't tell me who it is.

Then there's Jack, who's been pursuing a romance with Olivia, and his son, Eric, and Eric's girlfriend, Shelly (I think she's pregnant), and Zach and Rosemary Cox, whose marriage is reputedly on the skids and . . . Well, just come on over and we'll talk!

5 out of 5 stars Suddenly winter in Norway does not seem so long and dark after all!.......2007-09-25

Why is it that so many bestselling novels, read and enjoyed by millions of people, are not deemed important literature - but labelled light stuff "for the beach or a boring flight", as the saying goes.

Will Maeve Binchy be easily forgotten, or Rosamunde Pilcher? OR, Debbie Macomber? I'm not so sure.

This is my first Debbie Macomber novel and I got instantly hooked. Macomber writes about real people in a real world with real ups and downs - people with real lives. And - cliché - she makes them all come alive. As Binchy and Pilcher, Macomber tells us that life such as it is for most of us, is a lot more interesting and dramatic than any fantasy ever made up.

Debbie Macomber has a very distinct, yet flowing, writing style. There are no boring, "standstill" moments. Every word - none to many, none to few - matters in giving a complete, fulfilling description of the various characters' stories.

In their search for contentment and happiness, these people struggle with marriage, work and illness. They love and lose, are scarred and afraid to start anew. Even the seemingly strongest person has hers/his weaknesses and vulnerability. In short, they are exactly like you and me.

To me that's exciting reading.

One objection, though. There are a bit too many main characters to sort out in this book. I hope, however, this will improve as I continue reading book 3 - if not too many new faces appear on the stage!

I applaude the day I discovered Debbie Macomber. 15 books altogether in the Cedar Cove Series! Suddenly winter in Norway does not seem so long and dark after all!

PS) I simply adore the book covers!

5 out of 5 stars A STORY THAT WILL KEEP YOU FLIPPING PAGES.......2007-07-15

Debbie Macomber is a very good writter. She keeps her readers flipping from page to page. In this book, she brings mystery, love, romance and shook to her readers. This is a book that all readers need to get. I'll tell you, if you get this book, you will never regret spending your money. I enjoy every great moment with this book and I know you will enjoy it too the way I did.

4 out of 5 stars A Quick, Wonderful Read.......2006-11-22

This delightful confection of a book begins exactly where "16 LIghthouse Road" left off. Again, we are privy to the secrets and private desires of the residents of Cedar Cove, WA. But this is no "Desperate Housewives," it's more of a modern, updated version of a fabulous fifties fairytale, where no matter how tough the problem or how unsurmountable the barriers, very nice people find their way to love and happiness in the end.

What's wrong with that? Nothing! Macomber has such a sweet, winsome way of writing, that the reader willingly suspends reality and gets caught up in the characters' lives--hoping for the happy ending that almost always comes.

In this book, we move into the very interesting life of Grace Sherman, whose husband of 35 years, Dan, mysteriously disppeared in Book One. What happened to him? Has he really run away with another woman as Grace thinks? Her daughter Kelly is still holding a candle for her father, even though she now has a family of her own; her daughter Maryellen is defiantly manless. But everybody in the Sherman family is suffering from not knowing the truth.

We also get to know more about newsman Jack, who is still pursuing Olivia the judge. And what's up with Justine, Olivia's daughter, who persists in dating an unsavory land developer?

All these plots and more wind their way enthrallingly through this book. Highly recommended for those days when you just want a book to take you away from it all.

5 out of 5 stars Five Stars .......2006-11-03

The next installment of Cedar Cove introduced us to new people such as Zach and Rosie Cox who's marriage is going down to the toilet. It follows Grace Sherman who's husband has disappeared she thinks he left her for another woman. Justine who married Seth the end of the last book struggles when Seth is away in Alaska for work and they decide to open a restaurant to spend more time together. Maryellen, Grace's daughter, is fleshed out more as she becomes involved with Jon works at the restaurant and is also an photographer.

4 out of 5 stars Second In The Cedar Cove Series---Betcha Can't Read Just One.......2006-09-28

I admit it--I'm hooked on Cedar Cove. It's my new soap opera and I can't get enough of Olivia, Justine, Charlotte, Grace, Maryellen, and all the other residents. Debbie Macomber has done a superb job of portraying a small coastal town in Washington that lies midway between Mitford and Peyton Place on the sex and sin meter.

The book centers on Grace Sherman, the town librarian, who was deserted by her husband of thirty-five years in the previous book, 16 LIGHTHOUSE ROAD. Readers who were as mystified as Grace about where Dan went will finally find closure when the mystery of his disappearance is solved in a most unexpected way.

Another mystery presents itself when a mysterious stranger who looks vaguely familiar to B&B owner Bob Beldon shows up on a dark and stormy night looking for lodging. In the morning, the stranger is dead and the police are mystified.

Olivia's romance with newspaper editor Jack Griffin continues but is stalled when ex-husband Stan reappears on the scene. The life of Grace's daughter Maryellen is also explored in this novel, revealing her past sins and focusing on her current attraction to a reclusive photographer cum chef. Also, Rosie and Zach Scott file for divorce after bitter battles and receive a surprising child custody arrangement from Judge Olivia Lockhart, owner of 16 Lighthouse Road and best friend of Grace Sherman. Olivia's daughter Justine reappears with her new husband Seth and they overcome newly married separation blues and decide to open a restaurant. Their chef, of course, will be Maryellen's secret lover. Get the picture?

Lives intermingle, old secrets are revealed and new ones are hinted at. It's grand soap opera and hard to turn away from. So, if you'd like to know who the mysterious stranger was, if Olivia will choose Jack or Stan, if Grace can find a life with Cliff, if Maryellen will allow Jon to play a part in her future, and a dozen other things, you'll want to pick up 311 PELICAN COURT (that's where Rosie and Zach live). I know it'll be next on my list.

Book Description

Corrie McAfee
50 Harbor Street
Cedar Cove, Washington

Dear Reader,

Considering that I'm married to Cedar Cove's private investigator, you might think I enjoy mysteries. But I don't -- especially when they involve us! Roy and I have been receiving anonymous postcards and messages asking if we "regret the past." We don't know what they mean . . .

On a more positive note, we're both delighted that our daughter, Linette, has moved to Cedar Cove to work at the new medical clinic. A while ago I attended the humane society's "Dog and Bachelor Auction," where I bought her a date with Cal Washburn, who works at Cliff Harding's horse farm. Unfortunately Linette is less enthusiastic about this date than I am.

Speaking of Cliff, the romance between him and Grace Sherman is back on. But that's only one of the many interesting stories here in Cedar Cove. So why don't you drop by for a coffee at my husband's office on Main Street or our House on Harbor and I'll tell you everything that's new!

This whole series of books by Debbie Macomber was most enjoyable. I have read them all and her characters are real and most interesting.

5 out of 5 stars KEEPS HER READERS ON THE RUN FOR MORE.......2007-08-10

Debbie always tries to give the best of her thought for her readers. As a result we keep on searching for more of her books.

In this 5th book of the cedar cove town, Debbie shows the concern that each character has for each other. She continues by bringing the pass of Mr. and Mrs. McAfee into their present, which started to heat up the story more. If you don't believe me, then I recommend that you get the book and read it for yourself if you have not read it yet.

I enjoyed reading this book a lot and I have just started the six book of this series.

5 out of 5 stars Gossipy Good Book Welcomes Readers Back To Heart-Warming Town of Cedar Cove.......2007-02-21

Debbie Macomber is a great story teller. She has created a fictional town and peopled it with characters the reader in me has come to regard as old and dear friends. Simply put, I love this soap-opera-like town and its residents. In this fifth installment, the residents of Cedar Cove learn more about love and redemption, overcoming tragedy, dealing with rejection, and moving forward with grit and determination. There are unexpected bonding sessions, life-threatening situations for favorite characters, and the angst of young love.

50 HARBOR STREET is a gossipy good book that gives us another peek into the lives of people we have grown to love in previous installments. The residents of 50 HARBOR STREET are Roy and Corrie McAfee. As a private investigator, Roy solves a case that could impact his life more than any other he has tackled. The mystery of who is sending him anonymous notes is solved and it reveals a stunning back story to this quiet and unassuming couple.

Roy and Corrie's daughter Linette has moved back to Cedar Cove but spurns her mother's matchmaking skills to go after a young doctor who shows no interest in her but lots in her best friend.

Ben Rhodes' son David comes to town oozing charm and good looks. Why is he making enemies so quickly?

Allison Cox has fallen for a "bad boy" who seems intent on self-destruction. Even the support of parents Zach and Rosie may not make lemonade out of this crate of lemons.

Ian and Cecilia as well as Maryellen and Jon each handle second pregnancies filled with difficult decisions while love is in the air for Rachel Pendergast, Cal Wilson, and that on-again off-again couple Grace and Cliff. You'll want to know what's new with Olivia and Jack, Bob and Peggy, Justine and Seth, and all the friends and neighbors who have become part of your fictional family.

As usual, an unsolved mystery at the end and some dangling threads set the stage for the next installment, 6 RAINIER DRIVE, at the home of Justine and Seth Gunderson.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-02-06

Must have if you like this series. Debbie has done it again. I can't wait for the next one to come out.
