5 out of 5 stars When MapQuest is not available..........2007-09-14

...there's Thomas Guide! I finally got tired of my son calling me from his cell phone while in traffic, totally lost and wanting me to help him find his way back on coarse. I would have to stop what I'm doing, MapQuest where he was suppose to be and figure out where he was. Of coarse, he was a moving target, so his exact location was constantly changing... making it difficult to guide him anywhere. I checked out GPS's but they were quite costly and I wasn't sure if there was a monthly fee involved for using them. Then I got smart and ordered him his own Thomas Guide and viola! Problem solved!!! And at a real reasonable price!

Thomas Guide, always there when you need it...

5 out of 5 stars great purchase.......2007-06-27

timing delivery, package was in ship shape condition. i'd highly recommend this seller and product.

5 out of 5 stars If you live in LA/OC, you need one.......2007-04-12

Everyone who lives here has one in their car for a very good reason.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to read.......2007-04-11

Los Angeles and Orange County, California have some of the most congested and hard to navigate streets anywhere we have traveled. With Thomas Guide, the drive is easy. It is up-to-date, easy-to-read, and a must-have for travelers.

1 out of 5 stars Too annoyingly large and detailed for basic navigation.......2007-03-12

This is such a huge book, it is really difficult to use for basic navigation to get around the area. You have to flip back and forth betweeen the overview map and the detailed one, and just has a lot more detail than I want for most purposes. I will have to buy another map that is easier to use.

5 out of 5 stars COMPLETE BOOK.......2006-02-28

This guide makes it so much easier, because in Los Angeles and Orange Counties, I would need numerous individual maps, instead of this single book.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST-HAVE if you are new to SoCal or do a lot of driving.......2006-02-21

Since I started driving many years ago, I have always had a Thomas Guide. Even with the advent of GPS technology (a bit too expensive for me now), the Thomas Guide is invaluable. The latest version of the LA-OC guide has all the latest updates, which is very important with all the new construction in the OC. My 2001 guide was getting outdated, so I bought a new one.

One of the greatest features of the current guide is the CD included in the back. I installed it on my laptop, and it saves me time as I travel. When I need to go from one location to another and I don't have Internet access, I simply use the Thomas Guide CD.

5 out of 5 stars It has it all!.......2005-09-28

I just spent two weeks in L.A looking for places to live. This street finder quickly found all the addresses I was looking for. And I could easily navigate from one place to another, even when crossing several cities.

4 out of 5 stars Great guide, not-so-great software.......2005-04-28

I bought this product 99% for the guide as I've used previous versions in the past and have liked very much. As I've just moved to Orange county and found that the area I live in doesn't exist in prior guides (1999) I needed an upgrade. 2005 seems to have it all.

Only problem, I tried installing the software from the CD on 2 of my computers running WinXP and it was a no-go. Ended up installing all these funky .dll's and then the program wouldn't even boot when executed. Bummer as I was excited to have the guide available on my computer.

5 out of 5 stars A must-have.......2005-03-02

If you live in the L.A. area or spend significant amounts of time here, you need this book. Sure, you can get free maps from yahoo, mapquest or google, but when you're heading through El Monte and the 10 is blocked up, no website is going to help you find an alternate route.

It's also handy for locating a nearby post office, or most significant landmarks (the major stores at malls are identified by code, even, which helped my wife find a nearby Sears when she needed to make an exchange).

My only complaint is that the included CD-ROM version of the maps is Windows-only. They're considering a Mac version, but it'll likely be a year or two before we see it.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great for downtown LA.......2007-03-12

Durable, portable and easy to fold! Great for navigating the downtown LA area. Street names and intersections very clear. However, not a very useful resource for navigating the outer fringes of the city.

4 out of 5 stars MAP TO THE CITY OF ANGELS.......2006-09-25

I love L.A., but getting around the city, even for a native can be very arduous, especially if you get into the hollywood hills. This map, though limited, is a very good item to have it you get lost in west L.A., as with all of these streetwise maps, it focus's on the most traveled part of town, and in the case of L.A. it's downtown and the Westside. As for quality, these maps rate high, they are easy to access, are well crafted, and the font is easy to read and the map graphics are first rate. If you are in west L.A. or downtown often, then i highly suggest this map, you can really get lost on the westside of L.A...ever seen the beginning of Pretty Woman, Gere should have picked up one of these along with the Lotus.

5 out of 5 stars Streetwise LA.......2006-03-16

I am an avid fan of Streetwise maps. They are handy to carry and waterproof. Before visiting cities, I use a permanent marker to locate my hotel, places of interest, subway/bus stops, one-way streets, etc. I recommend them highly.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and Compact - all the Essential Details.......2005-04-16

This map of LA includes detailed maps of all the essential areas you're likely to want to visit. It even has the location of major hotels and attractions on it. The overview map of LA is also good for information at a quick glance. All of this is made even more useful and handy by being packaged in such a relatively small and DURABLE laminated map (and it folds up nice and small too!). This map will be with me at all times on my upcoming trip to LA.

UPDATE: Just got back from a week in L.A. and this map was a true lifesaver... perfect, spot-on, with all the right landmarks and coverage of just about all the most common areas you may visit. Within two days, the map helped me feel like I was an old-hand at the L.A. streets. Study it ahead of time, too!

1 out of 5 stars Useless.......2005-03-23

Do not waste money. Small laminated map, expensive, need a magnified glass to read it. You won't find any street there. Better pick-up a free map at in the metro area.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book!!.......2007-01-30

OK, I have to issue a full disclosure here; the author is my brother. But that said Scott has written a great little book. We grew up in LA and had always heard stories about how the auto companies ruined public transportation in LA in order to sell more cars. Scott decided to check that story out while he was studying for a PhD in history at UCLA. The result is this book. So if you want to know the truth about how LA came to be the automobile centered city it is, read his book. Cheers!

5 out of 5 stars How did transporation in LA die?.......2007-01-03

Why did the urban transportation system in Los Angeles die? This book takes a very multifaceted approach and looks beyond the automobile as its cause. The title is a little misleading. The book covers the downfall of public transpiration in California and how the car impacted life in southern California. There is actually very little urban analysis done here but it covers the public policy of early 1900's very well. You get a sense for how the municipalities and federal government responded in California and see the way in which the auto shaped those policies. The auto was very influential in the downfall of public transportation and I was surprised to see how many auto related interests owned stakes in public transport companies. For those just getting started on urban history this is a good book to start with and he sites the great source on suburbs Crabgrass Frontier (well worth the time to read). Very well written and fun especially if you grew up around LA.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This book is a CAR MUST-HAVE.......2006-05-20

I don't know what I would have done without this book in my car ALL THE TIME. There's nothing like being trapped in traffic and whipping out the book to find alternate routes - or when you need to fill up on gas, or looking for the other 24-hour fitness and there it is listed. I love the frank commentary of neighborhoods which are so accurate. And for the commentator below from Tucson who said he didn't care about where to get his car washed all over LA, when he moves here and realizes the great majority of LA needs to know where the closest car wash is.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Guide to LA area.......2005-11-21

Like the flashmaps guides I remember from around 25 years ago. I don't live in LA but travel there regularly...If you are an occasional visitor and generally know where things are, the NFT book can be your only guide/map...If you live here you will have a Thomas Bros. map anyway. I have to travel to out-of-the way neighborhoods like Chatsworth on business so I appreciate the listings for Post Offices and Banks on each page. Also if you have some time to kill, the hiking, park and beach overviews are good enough for someone who visits occasionally to find something to do. One thing I don't like is there is no space to write on the side opposite the map your own finds in a neighborhood, what I ended up doing is using colored pens to color code spots on the map with the item, for example on Map 24 I put a red dot on Washington Blvd and wrote a note in red about Fassica, an ethiopean restaurant, on the opposite page. Wish there was more space to write. Argh! Other gripes: is it really necessary to give El Sereno 4 pages? Couldn't that have gone to West Hollywood or Hollywood, instead of printing those pages in 6pt type? the book doesn't lay flat and the semi-rigid cover gets dogeared, crappy neighborhoods aren't indicated, and Long Beach is relegated to a 'Parks and Places' entry on pages 241-245 instead of a regular listing at the front, making it hard to locate in the book. Minor peeves, worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars My City Bible.......2005-06-28

I bought this at Borders as a joke. It was in their bargain bin. I love this book, especially when I'm driving around town on empty and need to find a gas station fast. Unlike the phone book, it has maps. I love exploring the city, and with NFT, I have peace of mind I can find an ATM nearby.

5 out of 5 stars New or moing to LA? A must have!.......2005-05-25

I just moved to LA about 4 days ago. My book is already getting beaten up. I use it all the time! It has decently detailed maps of every part of the city (Although it suggests buying another book, the Thomas Guide for really good, detailed maps) and lists every necessity in every part including, banks, grocery stores, liquor stores, post offices, restaurants and so on. It also has tons of information on city mass transit, driving, events, culture and more. The only thing i don't really like about it, as I mentioned above, is that the maps aren't in full detail. If you're looking for a book of maps, but the Thomas Guide. But if you're new here, I think it's totally worth the $20. I really has everything you need to know about LA to get you off your feet.

1 out of 5 stars Not for me either..........2005-05-20

I am moving to LA soon and just bought this book. Its title and no-nonsense cover suggest that it is full of useful information for the LA resident. It turns out to be just a series of maps with icons of things like car washes and banks on them. You can also find out everyday, useful information like how much tuition is at UCLA and USC. Neighborhoods get a politically correct, one-sentence description each. I'm thinking of leaving this book here in Tucson, but probably won't since I already bought it. Unless you're on a mission to get your car washed in every neighborhood in LA, you'd probably be just as well off with a copy of the yellow pages.
