3 out of 5 stars A lot of Characters.......2006-12-01

I liked this book however there were so many characters that I lost track of who was who. I liked the story line and Dr. Alex's Delawares character. The ending was a complete shock. It did pick up half way through..just started out slow. It was a good read and I recommend it just make sure you keep track of the characters from the begining.

4 out of 5 stars A good start to DR Delaware.......2006-08-08

This was my third book I read from Mr Kellerman. I enjoyed his other two books, so I decided read the first Dr. Delaware book. It was definitely good. He kept the story moving and I especially liked the way he gave the background information on Dr Delaware through his previous case, which Mr Kellerman tied it nicely to the overall story. The story itself was disturbing (slice and dice and the subject of child molesting through legitimate business). It definitely makes you wondering knowing there are people out there with this problem/sickness. I personally did not like the ending, because the core villains were give out information too easy, but then again, confession is the best way to close the loop. Also, I liked the other books better and noticed how Mr Kellerman was getting better (in my opinion as a reader). Comparing to "Over the Edge", "When the Bough Breaks" was written for Dr Delaware. He did most of the detective/police work and he did most of the crime solving. This was a little far fetch for me. However, on the "Over the Edge", he allowed his other characters to do their part. Overall, the book was excellent and I enjoyed the book. I will definitely keep on reading his other Delaware novels. I hope this helped. FYI!!!

2 out of 5 stars Far-fetched and disappointing mystery.......2006-07-17

This is one of the most far-fetched, outrageous mysteries I've ever read. Alex Delaware is a thirty-something, retired, child psychologist. When his cop friend asks him to help on a murder case, the good doctor suddenly becomes a sleuth asking questions with no apparent purpose. His questioning leads him from one seemingly unrelated death to another. All of a sudden, our novice detective is racing for his life from a motorcycle assassin, wrestling with a powerful athlete, and brandishing a gun while talking like Bogart. The conspiracy plot just isn't believable either--a group of pedophiles running a children's home? And they all happened to be college buddies? Come on. Don't waste your time on this one.

5 out of 5 stars Great start to a great series.......2006-05-30

This is the first book in the Alex Delaware series and starts with
Detective Milo Sturgis asking his pal Dr. Alex Delaware to help with a
witness. Alex is a retired child psychologist - retired after burning
out and breaking down following the suicide of a pedophile in his
office. Now, he's pretty much a California beach bum and Milo thinks he
needs some distraction. He really does need help with this witness,
though. A Psychologist and his girlfriend were brutally murdered and the
only witness is a little 7 year old girl who can't remember seeing
anything more that shadows. Milo thinks maybe Alex can talk with her,
maybe hypnotize her - at least try because thay have no other leads at
all.

Alex does gets involved - more involved than he planned on. This sweet
child really sucks him in and the more he digs, the more he finds this
case ties into the suicide at his office. He digs too deep, though,
stirs up enough dirt to get Milo pulled from the case and even
suspended. It's a nasty tale of big shot perversion and Alex digs deep
enough to
endanger his own life. Can Milo get to him in time to save him?

I'd read a couple later books in the series before this one and it was
fun to see how Alex and Milo meet and how Alex met his girlfriend Robin.
I saw the made for TV movie based on this book before I read it too, so
I had some idea of what to expect. It is full of twists, though, and
the ending threw me for a loop. No WAY did I expect this ending!

I highly recommend this series as the pinnacle of the Psychological
thriller.

4 out of 5 stars It'll Leave You Guessing.......2006-04-19

This was the first book by Jonathan Kellerman that I had read and was quite pleased with it. I have to admit, I found the book to be a bit long and drawn out. There were so many parts in the book that could have been left out or been less detailed. The last 100 pages or so were dedicated to the "ending" of the book and I read them so fast - I didn't want to put it down. A lot of suspense type books leave you hanging right until the end and conclude the book in the last 10 pages. I always found that to be frustrating. I mean, if you're going to take the time to write a 300 or 400 page book, don't leave the last 10 pages to "solve the mystery". If you like books by Tess Gerritsen, Karin Slaughter, and Robin Cook then I'm sure you'll like these books. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the Alex Delaware series and any other books written by Kellerman.

This is a "how-to" book one hopes to the Almighty one will never need. When the Bough Breaks takes a serious and sensitive look at how to cope with the loss of a child. Can one ever recover from such a loss? The author seems convinced we do not, but offers ways to rebuild our lives and recover our hope and our ability to go on with our lives and not have the death of a child turn into the death of our own hearts.

5 out of 5 stars The most helpful book I've read and useful for anyone touched by loss.......2007-07-27

I purchased this book for my parents when my brother died at the age of 29 in an auto accident. I felt helpless and knew we needed help to face the life ahead that seemed unappealing now. We needed people who would come around and really lend support and look to us for what our needs might be instead of suggesting those quick fixes in short "feel good quips" by extending a genuine offer of support which is more about being physically there, willing to help, or just sit near while we talk, rail, cry incessantly until our heads throb- those people usually number only in single digits. What we didn't need was our misery to be compounded by seeing reactions all too easy to read or being told directly that we're somehow not handling this in a healthy or normal way. As if there is one right way to grieve or a time at which "poof" you are healed? No, that always surprises me how little time we're given. As the author says, we will always carry this with us but over time will learn to adapt and as the author says she frequently heard, the second year for us was even harder. Now we are early into the third year and I am not surprised how many days or moments are still raw, as he was such an important part of my life from my earliest recollections until I was 33 and awoke to find he died alone in a ditch while I slept snug in my bed. Like seeing how much my three children have changed, knowing he has missed that, knowing how much joy he would bring to their lives were he here and the joy they would bring him, how hard he would laugh at the things they say and how proud he would be of them like he was when he was alive, how hard it is knowing that only through my stories will they remember him or know that he was so involved with them, that great brother of mine who was a great uncle.

I read this book as well as I was trying to understand the loss from my parent's perspective and I realized that it also was my story and that insights or events shared from others were those I could relate to -reactions from others or lack thereof, the lack of understanding from those who do not understand, the insensitive comments of many, the desertion of those too busy or too pained selfishly to come around, and the unspoken but clearly conveyed time frame in which society at large thinks one should heal, and those too few people whose support helped us keep our heads above water when we were sure we were going under. I was so angry at those who did not risk their discomfort with our pain to visit, or who when they did talk of Todd they did not use his name, or they would act sometimes as if it never happened at all, like he never WAS at all. That is the hardest to handle when you can no longer physically have them with you, hear their voice, or revel in their laughter and now there were those who would even deny you his memory when conversation comes to a screeching halt when you mention your loved one. They don't know what to say and sometimes that is exactly what you should say. There is no catchy "don't worry, be happy" phrase that will make it all better; but to be physically available despite your discomfort is vitally important to those in the midst of the hell that is a life forever altered without that key person whose meaning to you defies description with mere words. It feels visceral, that love, that loss. I cringe at the summary that says the author seems to suggest that we never "get over" the loss. Suggest? That reviewer has never had the rug pulled out from under him. Some phrases such as "get over" are always angering and trivialize the loved one we miss and the author bears our souls with the words we struggle to make understandable to educate those grieving, those in their lives, and society in general on loss. How could my parents not be devastated after their son whose smile lit up a room died so suddenly and who never got to reach the dreams we know he held, have the children he desired, etc.?

As a counselor, I have recommended this book over and over to ANYONE who has suffered a devastating loss because "parent" and "child" substituted with "person" and "loved one" will personalize the message and seem as if this author peered into your heart and wrote of your pain and struggle as well. I disagree with the review in which it was said that the author said when they're dead, they're dead and I NEVER saw that as I also would have been offended as our hope (which we will never part with and DO NOT attempt to take it!!) to see Todd in Heaven again someday is crucial to the healing that has begun, but the wound will always be there, somedays right in your face and other days just below the surface, unseen to others and often remaining there under your skin as you go through your days(suggesting to those who don't know loss that we're "over" it) but we know those memories, both fond and painful, come up at all the expected times and also at those times even years later when you're out and about and are stopped dead in your tracks because "he really like that song" or "he would have liked that movie" or when your heart feels pierced because you realize you are watching that young man because he looks like your brother, moves about like he did, you haven't seen your brother move in the flesh for a long time, too long, and you watch him for a while knowing it is not him and yet imagining that it is so you can reminisce because you want to remember always. Yes, that is normal and this book is written by someone who unfortunately knows first hand and that is what makes this book so helpful.

I feel strongly that this book can help not only parents faced with the unthinkable, but siblings such as myself, or even those who have someone they care about who is suffering and they want to try and understand and be more sensitive to that loss, and yes, for counselors who HAVE to be genuine and the insight, if you don't know it personally, will make the difference between healing and hurting the client because you "just don't get it."

4 out of 5 stars May you never need it.......2007-04-03

This is one of the more comforting of the many books which are now available to those who have lost a child. While such an event is the most heart breaking experience of life, it is consoling to read how others think, feel, and have handled such a tragedy. It is best read in small pieces, but well worth the time and effort.

5 out of 5 stars Soul searching.......2007-01-18

I was given this book 2 years ago, when our oldest son was killed while working between college semesters councelling disabled adults. While dealing with, in our mind, the worse human tragedy, we read small passages at varying times. The old adage, "misery loves company" is true, and as we continue to try and live and breathe each day this books helps by sharing that other parents continue to live also. This book covers all types of deaths of children from illness, suicide, accidents etc.... Unfortunately, I have just purchased four more copies to give to other parents in our very small community who have tragically lost their greatest gift also, their child.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read.......2007-01-13

Our daughter died 2 1/2 years ago and we struggle with our grief on a daily basis. Everyone thinks we should be over it. This book helped us realize we are more normal than we thought. A great resource for grieving parents and the people that surround them. I plan to donate our copy to our church library after asking our pastor to read it first.

3 out of 5 stars The authors beliefs.......2006-08-13

I thought the book was very good,in that it gave insite what other parents were feeling.
My 33 year old son was killed 8 months ago in a tragic fire truck accident,he was a hero during Hurricane Katrina, left a 4 yr. old son,he was just a wonderful human being in every way.
The only thing that helps me understand any of this,is that he still exists in a different dimension, that I will see him again.
But when this very intellegent author, said her belief is when your dead your dead, and she has no belief in an afterlife. This is something that I don't want to hear.

The pictures are great. The poems and stories are real. The women who put this book together are real people who got out there into the environment to tell the real story. It changed my mind to the way I thought about women and addictions. Kira and Fran are good people who know what telling truth is all about.

4 out of 5 stars A Collection From The Golden Age.......2005-02-26

Another good collection of stories from the 1940's and early 1950's, edited by John W. Campbell Jr.. The 23 stories included were all published originally in "Astounding Science Fiction" between May of 1940 and March of 1951. This anthology was published in 1952.

In comparing it with the other anthologies, such as those edited by Groff Conklin, it falls short in a couple of areas. The first is that there are fewer stories included, which isn't a big problem since the quality is very high. The second is that many of the stories included had already appeared in other collections prior to this one. However, for those who don't already have those collections, this is a good place to start.

The list of authors reads like a who's who of science fiction from the period, and many of the stories are classics. The list of stories is: "Blowups Happen" by Robert A. Heinlein, "Hindsight" by Jack Williamson, "Vault Of The Beast" by A. E. van Vogt, "The Exalted" by L. Sprague De Camp, "Nightfall" by Isaac Asimov, "When The Bough Breaks" by Lewis Padgett, "Clash By Night" by Lawrence O'Donnell, "Invariant" by John R. Pierce, "First Contact" by Murray Leinster, "Meihem In Ce Klasrum" by Dolton Edwards, "Hobbyist" by Eric Frank Russell, "E For Effort" by T. L. Sherred, "Child's Play" by William Tenn, "Thunder And Roses" by Theodore Sturgeon, "Late Night Final" by Eric Frank Russell", "Cold War" by Kris Neville, "Eternity Lost" by Clifford D. Simak, "The Witches Of Karres" by James H. Schmitz, "Over The Top" by Lester del Rey, "Meteor" by William T. Powers, "Last Enemy" by H. Beam Piper, "Historical Note" by Murray Leinster, and "Protected Species" by H. B. Fyfe.

The anthology as a whole, was ranked 16th by readers on the Astounding/Analog All-Time Poll for books in 1952, and it moved up to 8th on the same poll taken in 1956. In 1999, it was tied for 17th on the Locus All-Time Poll for anthologies.

Of the stories within, Asimov's "Nightfall" was rated 1st on the Astounding/Analog All-Time Poll for short fiction in 1971, and 2nd on the Locus Poll in 1999 for novelettes. Leinster's "First Contact" tied for 9th on the Astounding/Analog All-Time Poll for short fiction in 1971, and won the Retro Hugo for best novelette in 1996 for the year 1945. Piper's "Last Enemy" was nominated for the Retro Hugo for best novella in 2001 for the year 1950.

Book Description

Ophelia knows she has to make it work with this new foster family. She's been through too many homes since a terrible tragedy left her alone and emotionally isolated, and the state is not going to move her again no matter how unhappy she might become. So when her new foster mother asks her to take a job reading aloud to Portia McKay, an elderly neighbor, Ophelia grudgingly agrees.

At first Ophelia only goes because she gets paid. But as they get to know each other, Portia and Ophelia discover that they have much more in common than their Shakepearean names. They both have horrible secrets that they have never shared with another living soul. And it seems that this unlikely friendship may be just what they both need to break free of their emotional prisons.

Anna Myers seamlessly blends contemporary and historical narratives as Opehlia's and Portia's tales unfold.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars You won't regret it! Great reading!.......2003-08-08

One of the best YA authors in recent memory, Anna Myers does it again. Well written and frank, this honest look at difficult issues is a wonderful piece to inspire conversation with YA readers. Dark and suspenseful, the story deals with many themes less capable authors might shy from. A girl who feels responsible for murders committed by her brother meets a woman who connects with her in an unexpected way. Darker in tone that past books, Myers deals with teenage depression, mental illness, and abuse in a head-on manner. NOT a book for younger readers (8-12), this book is a fantastic page turner for the YA reader.

5 out of 5 stars When the Bough Breaks.......2001-05-11

This is a very touching story. It talks about foster care, youth murderers, and how this particular boy was driven to try to ease the pain of being bullied, and the repercussions of that act. How it left his sister alone and in foster homes carrying around the guilt of not telling anyone what he was feeling. How this poor child was tormented by children when they found out what her brother did, and how she was moved from foster homes when people found out. She befriended an old woman who was carrying around her own demons, and the two become friends. At first the girl is only trying to make some money so she can buy a bus ticket back to her own state to visit her parent's and brother's grave. She is trying to deal with her demons. She is very quiet and does not let anyone get close to her. Everyone she loves seems to die. This is a very touching and well written novel. It makes you think about your actions and how they may effect people. Anyone reading this should have a box of kleenex, because it is very sad at times. I would give this book 5 stars

5 out of 5 stars Exceptionally well written and compelling.......2000-12-12

When the Bough Breaks is a thoughtful novel that lets the reader peek inside a little girl who has been through more than most adults could imagine. This novel shows the adult reader how young people internalize trauma in their lives, how they accept blame for circumstances of which they have no control, and how desperate they become to understood and accepted.

3 out of 5 stars Love and Crime.......2000-12-05

Raber, Karen. "Murderous Mothers and the Family/State Analogy in Classical and Renaissance Drama." Comparative Literature Studies. 37.3 (2000): 298-320. Imagine what a world would be like without family. Love and support would bring on new meanings and might be an unfulfilled need. In When the Bough Breaks, a protagonist Ophelia has already gone through enough trauma at a young age to be in a foster home in early adolescence, only after watching her whole family being killed. During this story, Ophelia is reading to an elderly lady, Portia, who lives down the road. Portia and Ophelia have a few things in common. They have both experienced crime in their families and won't let anybody get too close to them because of the blame they place on themselves for it. Portia helps Ophelia discover her true power as she finds the same truth in herself. These effects of the crime are mostly displayed in her self-esteem, relationships, and overall fear of love. Ophelia blames herself for the killing of her mother, father, and brother. On the day that her brother killed her parents, she knew her brother had the guns out. She thought about telling but didn't because her brother had told her that if she did, he would kill himself. In the end, however, she felt that because she didn't tell, all of her family was killed. She doesn't believe that she is capable of doing much besides hurting others. This is shown in the way that she won't let anyone get close to her. She doesn't believe that she's worth caring about. She and Portia have this in common. Portia also saw people in her family hurt physically and emotionally in her past. As a result, she doesn't believe that she can ever get close to anyone ever again. However, the power of Portia's regret from her past helps Ophelia overcome this fear. Ophelia tries to kill herself in the end of the novel. Portia sees potential in the young girl and saves her life. This causes them both to see that they can learn to love each other and, most importantly, love themselves. Positive relationships help people to make it through their lives easier and much more comfortably. Ophelia doesn't want anyone new to come into her life and ruin her safety zone of independence. She's also afraid of hurting other people in the same way that she feels she hurt her own family. She avoids relationships throughout the book. For example, Mark, a boy in her class at school, keeps trying to ask her out. She will not even consider it because she's afraid of her past catching up with her. "She couldn't do something like going out on a date. Things like that were for normal people, people who did not have hidden magazines with pictures of murdered family members," (Myers 76). In addition to avoiding dating relationships, Ophelia also avoids friendships. She doesn't try to get along with students in her class, and doesn't want to become friends with Portia or her foster family. Sometimes, however, emotion can overrule fears. Her new relationships that are formed in the story with Portia and Mark show that people don't believe that the crime committed to her family was her fault. Love leads Ophelia to perform the act that she believes caused her family's murder. She feels that her lying killed her family, and if she loves again, she will cause the same pain to the ones that she comes to love. This shows Ophelia's fear of love. She's afraid of loving herself because she hasn't forgiven herself for letting her family die. Letting go of this grudge would mean that she would have to learn to love again. Ophelia is also afraid of the love that others might give her. This is why she depends so much on her independence. She doesn't get close to Portia until some large barriers are broken down. "Ophelia did not usually like to give information about herself, but there was something about this woman, something that wouldn't let her lie or avoid, something that almost made her want to talk," (Myers). She doesn't want foster families to love her because she already knows how it feels to be moved from one family to the next. The overall reason that she has to move is because of the crime that she feels she committed, and this is the sole reason that she is afraid of love. Karen Raber understands what kind of difference it can make on a person when there is not a firm family of home. "The home thus becomes, in Cicero's words, "the nursery . . . of the state," inculcating behaviors, beliefs and assumptions that will support the overall structure of ordered government," (Raber). Karen Raber believes that for people to be a positive asset to a community, the family must first be established. Damage to a family can affect people in ways that are shown in their part of the world. Portia has low self-esteem, fear of relationships, and fear of love. Through her difficulties, she doesn't allow herself to be the best of her community. Ophelia has many capabilities of doing well in life. However, she lets the past crime in her life keep her from going after those new opportunities. Through learning to love herself, making friends, and allowing love to enter her life, Portia finds that she can change her world, even through she happened to have some previous bad experiences in her life.

5 out of 5 stars What an eye opener!.......2005-11-30

One of the things I like about this book is that instead of diminishing the role of men it points out their importance. It also shows government policies can make a big difference in the lives of children. It is full of shocking statistics. Did you know that 27% of kids don't graduate high school? That Medicare will pay for an 80 year old man to have bypass surgery while a poor woman cannot get free prenatal care? That if a pregnant women seeks treatment for drug addiction it is not easily available? However, once children are born prematurely or drug-addicted, society picks up a huge tab for that. Read this book and find out why and what changes the author recommends. Truly a remarkable contribution.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, though a little dated.......2005-07-10

Sylvia Ann Hewlett is one of the few economists concerned with this topic. This, along with her book "The War on Families", frame the issues quite well. Read both books for the entire perspective, since this book is older... But the problems remain...

Her idea that American families suffer from both a Time Deficit and a Resource Defict is one I still use in explaining these issues. Those twin deficits are still around today, and no one seems to address them. The increasing working hours and declining social services are not current political issues... We can add to that the increasing dependence on duel incomes: where both parents HAVE to work to make what they could in previous generations.

I suggest reading these books along with Neal Postman's "The Disapperance of Childhood". That book goes into the origins of childhood and how the creation of the mass media and institutionalization threatens it.
