Book Description
Set off by the bullet of a would-be assassin, Neo-Tokyo has been leveled by Akira's godlike psychic fury. Now cut off from the rest of world, the Great Tokyo Empire rises, with Akira its king, Tetsuo its mad prime minister, and a growing army of fanatic acolytes. Forces on the outside still search for a way to stop Akira, and the answer may lie in the hands of the mysterious Lady Miyako, a powerful member of Akira's psychic brotherhood. But the solution to harnessing Akira may ultimately be more dangerous than Akira himself!
Customer Reviews:
Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Kaneda and others presumedly died in Akira's outburst, and some time later, the remnants of Neo-Tokyo are divided in two warring factions. Tetsuo and Akira as the titular head of one, and Lady Miyako, Kei and other psionics in the other.
Tetsuo attacks, and they barely beat him back. When he attacks again, they fail. The Colonel, however, appears, and he still has the ability to use the SOL satellite to blow the hell out of things from space, and he does so.
The devastation reveals Kaneda, alive!
Otomo Throws His Readers A Curve-Ball.............2002-05-20
At the end of Volume Three, Akira, reacting to the death of his friend at the hands of Nezu, once again leveled Tokyo. We last saw Akira and Tetsuo floating above the wreckage of the devastated city....
Well, creator Katsuhiro Otoma has taken the status-quo, and turned it upside-down with Volume 4. Neo-Tokyo is now a wasteland, with warring factions of savage survivors roaming the streets.....and Akira and Tetsuo as their King and Prime Minister, respectively. Tetsuo is busy creating an army of psychics to strengthen his reign, Kaneda is apparently dead, Kei and Chiyoko are desperately trying to protect the surviving "Children" (Akira's fellow psychic powerhouses), and the outside world is trying to figure out just what in the hell is happening in Tokyo.
The book is a non-stop thrill-ride, and Otomo's art continues to be breathtaking. I could have done without the almost continuous "Kei is about to get raped" motif (The series takes a MAJOR "Mature Readers ONLY" turn as of this volume), but aside from that minor quibble, Akira continues to be well worth the money. Highly recommended!
POST-Apocalyptic Adventure!.......2002-04-08
The serias swerves into a great change in this issue, and frankly, I like the change. Not that I didn't LOVE the first three; It's just that giving the series such a drastic change in this issue peaks more interest in the story.
On with the story itself! Neo-Tokoyo has blown up once again, thanks to that Chile-god,Akira! (Actually, I think Nezu should be the one to blame; I mean, he's the one who fired the gun! The little gofer-faced weasel in the cheap suit!) Hey, if they rebuild Neo-Tokoyo, would it be called Neo-Neo-Tokoyo? Anyway, Now Akira and Tetsuo have joined forces and rule half of Tokoyo, with an army of trigger-happy mainiacs serving them! The other half of Tokoyo is "ruled" by the kindly Lady Miyoko and her priests, who run a temple for the sick and needy. Truth be told, I think Tetsuo and Akira couldn't give one hoot in heck what happens to their empire: Akira just plays with some toys and rocks, and Tetsuo spends the whole issue trying to get over his drug problem. The only person who really seems to care about the Empire is Tetuo's aide (we never find out his name).
Now, when Nezu died, I thought "Uh-oh. There's a gap of slimy evilness left open here. How will it be filled?" Luckily, Otomo is a genuis, and also saw this gap, so he filled it with this new villian. Now, everyone refers to this guy as the commander, but by no means does he look like an army guy: Instead, he's much, MUCH seedier. He basically has big, elvis style hair and wears a suit and tie. He's the type of guy who barks orders to guys who have lower ranks than him, but quivers in fear whenever Tetsuo shows up. As the story progresses, he grows steadly more deranged, and before long, he's leading the empire into a full-out assault against Miyoko, cruely slaughtering priests and sick refugeess. Basically, Otomo really wants to point out that this guy is EVIL, and he does it very effectivily. He's yet another obstacle our heroes have to get past in order to kill Tetsuo.
All in all, the story is very good, and I liked all the new baddies that were added (Tetsuo's aide, the big guy in the glasses, the ugly ape (as Yamada called him), and the birdman(the guy with the blindfold))Keep up the good work, Otomo!
oh, and on a side note, some people may dissapointed that Kanedea was not in this one. But, i think it was good maunever. This way, Kie is the star of this one, and therefore her character is developed a lot more.
A New Chapter of Neo Tokyo.......2002-03-14
The wind of change triggered by Akira's mega psychic wave has finally leveled Tokyo. In the wake of September 11th, reading this issue gives you tremendeous chill as how very bad it is to live in a post apocalyptic world. Great mirroring of our contemporary war-anxious world.
The plot thickens, so to speak ..........2002-01-15
Already the fourth of a total of six volumes that collect the complete Akira tale. It's vital to read the previous volumes though because this tale is ONE big story and not divided into self-contained arcs. Therefore it's good to know that after two volumes that were decreasing in the number of pages here is the biggest volume yet.
After last issues events, where Akira's powers were triggered, Tetsuo has now set things to his will. The ruins of what was half of Neo-Tokyo have been renamed `Great Tokyo Empire' with Akira as emperor and Tetsuo his right hand. They (mainly Tetsuo really) rule strictly and totalitarian, not allowing outside influences. The population of the Great Tokyo Empire sees a new messiah in Akira though and happily accepts all that. The other side of Neo-Tokyo, led by Lady Miyako who takes in the sick and the needy to help them, is opposed to all this. They try to live peaceful and rebuild what they had while Tetsuo, who has serious health-problems, is having his people trying to conquer her part of Neo-Tokyo as well.
In this part of the story the prior life of Akira, before he got buried to keep safe, is revealed a little. The grander scheme in the uncovering of project Akira is becoming clearer as well. Off course that doesn't mean there aren't a lot of action-for-the-purpose-of-action pages in here as well. The art, black-and-white except for the first few pages, is the same as it has been all along. Instead of using a lot of text-panels the story is told through it for a big part. Off course that makes for a very speedy read but with the number of pages up to score (again) that's not too much of a problem. Quality reading ...

THE GINYU FORCE'S GRAND DEBUT!!!.......2006-12-08
The VIZ translation is much more acurate then the FUNimation dub. The Ginyu force's names are Burter, Jeice, Recoome, and Guldo in the dub, but they are spelled Butta, Jheese, Reacoom, and Gurd in the manga. As for the story, it picks up where volume 6 left of, with Kuririn meeting the Great Elder for the first time. If you want to know what happens, read the book.

Book Description
Here comes another Dragon Ball Z adventure, currently the number one show on the Cartoon Network. As the battle of Namek turns the entire planet into a fireball, Goku shows mercy to his opponent Freeza; but the would-be ruler of the universe is ungrateful. Awaiting Goku's return to Earth, the heroes are shocked to find Freeza's spaceship hurtling toward them, with the evildoer vowing to destroy the planet! Meanwhile, the mysterious warrior Trunks appears from the future, with an alarming message!
Customer Reviews:
Jared's review.......2006-03-22
I enjoyed this book, but thought it could be a little bit longer. I liked the part where Freeza got sliced up by his own energy disk. The best warrior in the universe did suicide!!! It was fun reading for any Dragon Ball Z fans.
First Appearance of the BEST DBZ character.......2005-01-17
Freeza has escaped Namek and is coming to Earth. With Goku not back from Namek yet, the Z-fighters know that things are hopeless, yet they decide to die fighting. Our heroes are in more trouble than they thought. Another power, strong like Freeza's is coming to earth. It is Freeza's father, King Cold. Will Goku come back to a planet riddled with destruction?
As the Z-fighters believe that it is truly hopeless now, a mysterious boy wearing a Capsule Corporation jacket comes from nowhere to challenge Freeza and King Cold. What is he thinking? The only way he can have a chance is by turning into a Super Saiyan, and there is no way that can happen. Whoops. Spoke too soon. Trunks has turned into a Super Saiyan. As the heroes rejoice to the defeat of the evil in the universe, it is cut short by the boy's prediction of doom. The Red Ribbon Androids want revenge against Goku for stopping the plans for world domination held by the Red Ribbon Army (see Dragon Ball 5-8).
Can three years of training be enough to stop the Androids that destroyed Trunks' timeline?
#12 lives up to the name Dragonball Z.......2004-07-16
This book,(like the other 11 before it) is amazing. However their is one bad thing about this book... it's the last one that I need to complete my set because after this book, all of the rest of them are in shonen jump (which I also highly recommend). So now that I have 1-12 I have decided to start reading dragonball. If Dragonball is ANYTHING like the Dragonball Z manga then it must be amazing. All there is else to say is congratulations Akira Toriyama for such an amazing creation!
DBZ #12 is the best!.......2003-10-20
This might be my favorite DBZ manga yet since Trunks is my favorite character. It starts when Freiza's gets cut in half and Goku nearly escapes Planet Nameks distruction. After that Frezia appears with King Cold. Just in time Trunks shows up and destroys Freiza and his father. Goku comes back and Trunks tells him that he came from the future and about the androids. Read it! The manga is much better than the TV show.
He's heeeeerrrrrrreeeeeee!.......2003-09-14
Mirai no Trunks, or Future Trunks, shows up in the new DBZ volume, making the coolest character debut in any anime or manga in existence! The Frieza saga finally ends, and the Androids/Cell saga begin with this volume, as Trunks gives Goku a warning of danger(ps, that's also the title of a DBZ song). So, the Z-senshi, including Kuririn, Tenshinhan, Yamcha, and Chaozu, who all come back from the dead in this volume, train for three years. What will they face?! Will the training be enough? Find out, as the sequel to the original DB Red Ribbon Army story begins!

The best of the series!.......2004-02-11
This book is my favorite of the Dragonball Z books I have read so far. It has one of the best battles in all of the series as Vegeta and Goku test each others limits. Each time Vegeta seems to be beaten he comes back from the dead. This is probably the first truly great battle of the series. Finally, vegeta is defeated when Gohan transforms into a giant ape and then falls on him. You should definitely buy the first four books of the series as they set the stage for the adventures to come.

After meating Lunch Muten Roshi takes Goku and Kuririn to train at turtle rock. After six months of hard traning Goku and Kuririn go of the the world martial arts tourtment where they meet some old friends and rivals. This is one of my favroit volumes beacuse it has good humor and action. This volume has some achool and tabaco use with some mild language and some tolit humor in it so I think it may be aproproit for some kids. Anyway good buy and part to the dragon ball manga series I also owen the Dvd box set of this saga.

Awsome!.......2005-07-23
This Book Is Awsome. Its so Easy to read AndI think u should buy it Its just like the show! If u read #1 its the Series. And theres Some parts Are NOt for kids... I Say not to let anybody under 10 read it.
this is a masterpeice.......2004-09-20
The Dragon Ball Z manga is a piece of art and should be in every collector's hands. This DBZ #2 is actually Dragon Ball #18 of 42, but this part of the story is fine to begin with; backstory is not a problem if you have read DBZ Vol. 1, and since DBZ is a different stage of the lives of the characters. It is 190 pages of fun and wonder. Besides, for only (...) why would anyone pass up this opportunity? I guarantee this story will have you hooked. (...)
BUY IT!BUY IT!BUY IT!.......2003-12-25
Whoa!!I bought this book with #3 at a Borders in Maine and when I read it at home-WOO-HOO!!!Now I've only read volumes 1-4[which I own, they rock!],but I think this is the best DBZ volume ever!!!(At least 'til Gotenks comes out)=)BY the way, there will be 26 DBZ volumes total.
Dragon Ball Z Vol.2.......2003-06-19
This is the best DBZ yet (although, DB is better than DBZ)!!!! The Saiyans are coming to Earth and everyone is training! You get to see some fighting too. I reccomend buying it!!!!!!!!!

Book Description
In the newest entry in the enduring Dragon Ball series, the Strongest Under the Heavens tournament rages on, and already Yamcha has been eliminated. In the battle between the smallest fighters of the Turtle and Crane schools, Kuririn pits his kamehameha against the Dodon-pa blast of Chaozu. Things really heat up when the match between Jackie Chun and Tenshinhan becomes a battle of ideology rather than strength. Dragon Ball is one of the most popular manga in the world, with top-rated shows on the Cartoon Network and Telemundo. This adventure is presented in the original right-to-left Japanese format.
Customer Reviews:
The Saga Continues.......2003-10-03
A must have for any true Dragonball Z fan. This manga includes the original artwork and continues the amazing story of Dragonball. A must have for an Akira Toriyama fan (author of Dragonball & Dr. Slump) his work continues to inspire Manga and Anime alike all over the world.
i wish for..........2003-08-13
this dragonball rocks in it are some great macthes like goku vs. kuririn, goku vs. tenshinhan, and jackie chun vs. tenshinhan. im really mad at viz comics for ending it right at comic 132 the arms race. but here is whats going on goku is fighting tenshinhan for champion they are both using really cool moves and tenshinhan was a bout to use an extremely powerful move.
Dragon Ball Vol.11.......2003-08-08
This book is totally awesome!!!! In it Goku and Tenshinhan fight to win the world tournament! You should buy it!!!!!!!!!!!
Kickin' things around..........2003-07-30
The manga magazine SHONEN JUMP brings a never-before-seen volume of Dragon Ball to America. This one begins in the midst of the 22nd "Tenkaichi Budokai" fighting tournament. At the start, cool bald-headed Kuririn is fighting the single-haired, doll-like Chaozu. Kuririn defeats him with an unusual method, but you'll have to read the book to find out what it is.
Later, the three-eyed Tenshinhan goes up against the impostor Jackie Chun (no relation to Jackie Chan). After Chun's stunning defeat, the half-monkey main character, Goku, must fight Tenshinhan.
The next fight is surprising. The "two best friends being forced to fight each other" theme is common in manga, but this time around, it's more interesting.
This book combines astounding battle action with a dollop of humor...Not only that, but this is probably the most clean book of the entire Dragon Ball series...DB Volume 11 is an excellent book for anyone who loves manga.
