A Surprise.......2006-06-22

This book was a gift from a friend, since I live in a lakefront high-rise and have an interest in Chicago architecture, I walk past dozens of these building throughout my daily travels in the city with a new appreciation now. The amazing vintage photographs plus the many detailed floor plans, along with splendid elevation drawings make this book both a joy and a valuable addition to any library.

This is a gorgeous book, I really can't say enough about the quality of books Acanthus Press puts out, they are amazing. The black and white photos are beautiful, they are crisp and vivid. The book is quite thorough, and I found the text to be scholarly and highly informative. I was pleased that exterior as well as interior photos where used, the reader really gets a feel for the buildings and you get an excellent cross section of the top apartment buildings. Chicago is second only to New York in luxurious apartment buildings and this book does an amazing job of cataloging the best examples, I loved this book. The book even includes a silk book mark. If you are the least bit interested in this subject, buy this book, you will not be disappointed, it is first rate. A book for those who love books.

For the lake front dreamers.......2004-11-26

This is a first-rate survey of the great apartment buildings of Chicago. The title is misleading since Professor Harris covers over 120 years of architecture with his nearly 100 buildings. The interior decoration shots are fantastic: there are modernist interiors alongside misplaced historical interiors, there are Elkins and Adler designs too. Harris'introduction is a wealth of sociological information. This is a must buy for anybody interested in apartment buildings in Chicago.

The Rise of Chicago.......2004-11-16

Having been born in the windy city it was with great relish that I bought Mr. Harris' book. I was not disappointed. It is fascinating and full of details about the people who designed these dwellings and the people who populated them. Overlooking Lake Michigan these buildings were the envy of many cities. The natural shoreline provided a perfect setting for the imagination of the architects and builders who created these edifices for their wealthy inhabitants. The changes that took place as the city became more vertical and more populace is a truly exciting look into the growth of the United States. Mr. Harris has done a superb job.

An interesting look at how people live.......2006-06-24

If you live in New York City, this is a great book to see what the building "insides" look like. Although I don't live there, I still enjoyed seeing the floor plans and getting a very brief descriptive of each building. Just a fun book to look at and imagine yourself living in one of the more grand one-floor coops or condos. Fun to dream! The only downside is that some of the floor plans were so small that I needed a magnifying glass to identify the room layout.

Originally published under the title 'Apartments for the Affluent,' this book is aimed at a very narrow audience indeed. Alpern takes us through 75 luxury Manhattan apartment houses in chronological order, from 1869 to 1974. Each building has a full-page b&w photograph, a diagram of a typical floor plan, and a quarter-page-or-so description. Alpern explains the reasoning behind the various room arrangements, and how that reasoning evolved over the years. I enjoyed this book immensely, but it's not for everyone. If you ever walked by an older high-rise apartment building and wondered how the rooms were arranged and why, this slender volume will fascinate you. Otherwise, you may prefer a book that's a more general survey of the topic (including some by the same author).

This book provides excellent descriptions and floor plans of many of New York's finest apartments. It proved to be a great guide book on a recent trip to the city.

A MUST HAVE.......1999-09-10

This book is a must have for any fan of architecture. A glimps into some of the most amazing buildings, complete with floorplans! My personal favorites: The Langham, 1107 Fifth Ave, 960 Fifth Ave, 625 Park Ave, River House and my ultimate favorite, the late great 410 Park Ave. I am so glad I discovered this book.

A 20TH century Quaker mystic speaks.......2001-08-16

This tiny book -- 71 pages, including the appendix -- is just right for someone who wants to learn about this 20th century Quaker mystic or someone who wants to carry around tidbits from his books (A Testament of Devotion; The Eternal Promise; Reality of the Spiritual World) and letters to his wife, Lael Kelly.

Chapters include thoughts on praying, as well as reflections on a spiritual marriage, on amazing people he met in Germany during a visit in 1938, on "running away into God," on "holy obedience" and so much more, all stuffed into this little book. The only down-side I can find is that it leaves you longing for more, and so wanting to read more of his works (Testament of Devotion is highly recommended.)

In Special Concerns (to be found in the aforementioned book) Kelly writes "We have tried to discover the grounds of social responsibility and social sensitivity of Friends. It is not in mere humanitariansm. It is not in mreer pity. It is not in anything earthly. The social concern of Friends is grounded in an experience -- an experience of the Love of God and of the impulse to saviorhood inheart in the fresh quickenings of that life. Social concern is the dynamic Life of God at work in the world, made special and emphatic and unique, particularized in each individual or group who is sensitive and tender in the leading-strings of love. A concern is God-initiated, often surprising, always holy, for the Life of God is breaking through into the world. Its execution is in peace and power and astounding faith and joy, for in unhurried serenity the Eternal is at work in the midst of time, triumphantly bringing things up unto Himself."

Kelly repeatedly states that there is that of God in everyone (a basic to Quaker beliefs, and strongly states that what believers need is not so much the Bible as the Living Word - all of which softens some of what this liberal Friend finds a bit close to conservative Quakerism.

All that aside, this is a lovely book. This pocket-sized book also includes a small autobiograph of Kelly, who was born near Chillicothe, Ohio in 1893 and died in 1947 just as he'd begun to compile a short book that would contain some of his speeches and lectures.

what so funny.......2007-05-30

The book was weird. I did not like Mama Ruby character. To me she was just a big bully. Talk about manipulative. Everyone was trying to rape her. Even though I did not like her character; I must admit she add charm to the book. The book overall was a page turner because it unpredicatable. The only disappointment I faced was I wanted Maureen to know her real mother. Also I wanted to see Mama Ruby be remorseful about all those life she took.

It's so surreal and deals with the supernatural most of the time. Jaw dropping. And funny. The brashness of it all is disturbing and intriguing at the same time.

This is an excellent book. It is good for instruction or meditation. And it is short and very easy to read. I highly recommend the series of the Upper Room Spiritual Classics.

Rediscovering the soul's passion.......2000-05-24

This book is well-named, as it is evident right from the start that Teresa of Avila was indeed passionate about her God. Though the reader must obviously adjust for historical setting, Teresa's experience and relation of deeply spiritual prayer is powerful enough to make one examine one's own prayer life. Such an examination is both exhilirating and intimidating, but Teresa's writings are encouraging to Christians regardless of where they find themselves in their pilgrimage. The shortness of this book make it the perfect companion for daily devotions, or personal retreats.

Good book in a small package!.......2001-08-16

I got this book, inspired by reading The Red Tent. Although it has writings about people who lived long after that wonderful book, the Desert Fathers and Mothers seem to be descendants of those depicted in the Old Testament.

It starts off with the solitary Andrew (circa 241 - 356 AD), whose wisdom was sought by many ("Who will not lie after the commission of a sin, through the wish to escape notice? As we would not commit carnal sin while we are looking at one another, so if we record our thoughts as though about to tell them to one another, we shall more easily keep ourselves free from vile thoughts through shame. So let what we write take the place of the eyes of our fellow hermits. Then blushing as much as if we had been caught, we may never think of what is unseemly.)

There is the story of Maria and Abraham, niece and uncle. An orphaned Maria grew up in the desert praying and learning Scripture, but was seduced by a monk. She fled to the city where she became a prostitute -- Abraham searched for her for two years, found her and -- well, you can read the story in the book.

Also stories of the Two Wise Women (yes!), a monk named Maria, more stories on monks (Abbas) and chapters with advices on prayer, judging others and the goal of discipline. These read much like little stories, and remind me very much of stories told in Sufi Tales.
