Book Description

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre is the most popular pilgrim destination in Christendom, and this gorgeously illustrated volume is the ultimate guide to the site. Produced in association with the Israel Antiquities Authority, The Church of the Holy Sepulchre covers the Church's history, its transformations, and the different Christian communities associated with it.

In 325-326 A.D., Christians looking for the site of Golgotha demolished the Temple of Aphrodite and found what they believed to be the Tomb of Christ. Emperor Constantine ordered the construction of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre on the site. During a visit while the church was under construction, Empress Helena discovered what is believed to be the remains of the cross on which Christ was crucified in the same area. Consecrated in September of 335, the church has had a complex and fascinating history. It has fallen victim to fires, riots, lootings, earthquakes, and numerous attacks, from its first attack by the Persians in 614 to its almost complete destruction by King al-Hakim of Egypt in 1009. The church has always been restored and renovated, however, and additional buildings and modifications to the interior and exterior have made it a fascinatingly intricate complex. Today, it is a site of worship for six different denominations of Christianity, each with its own rites and rituals, and it remains a destination for innumerable pilgrims from all corners of the world.

5 out of 5 stars An important window on historical Christianity.......2004-07-09

Every Christian with a sense of the sacred and also historical sense--and that should be every Christian--would benefit from this book. It is even better than I expected. The photos are as beautiful and moving as advertised. Especially good are the essays showing the continuity of understanding about the historicity of the site of Christ's tomb. The text also explains the various positions of the Christian churches with possession or rights within the Sepulchre/Resurrection complex. The book also does not shy from the embarrassing fact that ancient divisions within orthodox Christianity continue to this day. How wonderful it would be if these divisions could be put aside, especially in light of the current cultural and religious onslaught against Christians. I recommend that the book be ordered through Daedalus books (beware--Daedalus the book catalog, not the kinky publisher) because Daedalus has it in stock at a much reduced price.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic book about the greatest church.......2000-10-19

Some day I should like very much to visit Jerusalem. Until I do, I'll probably wear this book out.

This is a history of Christendom's holiest shrine, the church built over what was believed to be the site of Jesus' burial and resurrection. This book contains the church's complete history along with some of the most spectacular photography of the church, its various communities, and its ceremonies that I've ever seen.

Pricey, but I've never seen a better one. If you don't think you'll ever make a Jerusalem pilgramage, click on "Add to Shopping Cart" right now.

Book Description

Radical Islam has long desired to seize Jerusalem and cut it off to Christian and Jewish believers. In his revealing new book, The Fight for Jerusalem, bestselling author and former Israeli ambassador to the United Nations Dore Gold explains why the battle for Jerusalem is intensifying today. Gold shows why only Israel can preserve its holy places for Christians, Jews, and even Muslims, and why uncovering Jerusalem's past-and the truth of biblical history-can be the key to saving its future.

5 out of 5 stars A politically charged yet thoughtfully reasoned exhortation .......2007-10-06

Former Israel ambassador to the U.N. (among his many other credentials) Dore Gold presents The Fight for Jerusalem: Radical Islam, the West, and the future of the Holy City, a serious-minded discussion of the future of Jerusalem, a city holy to Christians, Jews, and Muslims. The Fight for Jerusalem makes a convincing argument that for Jerusalem to be a free city where all faiths can be practiced, it will have to remain under Israeli sovereignty, because the United Nations cannot be relied upon to protect it and the Muslim Palestinians have become increasingly affected by a branch of radical Islam that seeks to eliminate other faiths from Jerusalem, not co-exist with them. Drawing upon meticulous scholarly research, The Fight for Jerusalem addresses how Palestinians are destroying archaeological evidence of ancient Jewish presence in Jerusalem, particularly on the Temple Mount; how Western diplomatic concessions strengthen the apocalyptic speculations of radical Muslims; how the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza brought more power to Palestinian extremists at the expense of Palestinian moderates; why negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority over the status of Jerusalem have little chance of creating an agreement; and much more. It should be noted that The Fight for Jerusalem specifically denounces the religious intolerance radical Islam, and recognizes that the majority of the Muslim world is not radical, though The Fight for Jerusalem decries the increasing power that radical Islamic factions have. A politically charged yet thoughtfully reasoned exhortation on how Jerusalem, a potential focal point of radical Islam's jihad against the West, can best be preserved for future generations.

5 out of 5 stars More In This Vein Needed.......2007-07-12

Mr. Gold has had an intriguing history of exposing through historical precedents and context the most interesting institutions. This book is no exception with Jerusalem, the city in the Middle East that can perhaps be said to represent the modicum of freedom and Western values that exists there, and why it's imperative that it be held and protected against any antithetical forces surrounding it, either there or abroad.

Dore Gold does the reader and novice (or even university-educated) reader a great and grandiose service by documenting not just how long the Jews have been living in modern Israel, but showing us just how long they've been under attack, kept as slaves, as Dhimmis, whipped commodities of Europe's countries, and generally how it all started. The Bar-Kochba revolution against the just-turned Roman imperialists is a great account, told with brevity, but demonstrating what the Jews have been through just to hold on to their tiny piece of land, and how many empires have swept through it.

A previous writer said that there's blame on both sides to the conflict, and that giving away land to the anarchistic Palestinian terror groups is being open minded. I would pose the question that Dore Gold answers for us: If Jerusalem and its surrounding environs were given over eventually to Arabic, Islamic forces, there would be no tolerance of religion whatsoever for any soul in the land. Already, the last Christians are fleeing any part of Israel that is controlled by Palestinian faction groups, whose version of Islam doesn't even allow for Fatah's to promulgate.

There are previous accusations that Gold's sources are flimsy. Since when are speeches of those involved, podcasts of the same, and books irrelevant and not conducive to research? What's omitted from some critics' reviews is the presentation of vast amounts of historical and recent archeological surfacing that has vindicated those who taught us about the unified Davidic Kingdom and the tribes of Israel before his time. If you don't read more than the first 2 chapters, you're already richly rewarded by gaining a historical eye covering about 1400 years of Israelite history.

I think one of the most important misnomers that have stuck with us is that the land of ancient Canaan/Israel was only named Palestine by the Romans once they began establishing exploratory garrisons. They aptly named it after "Philistines" who had residence there still after so many quasi-empiric swaths through Israel.

Dore Gold might be a nationalist-rightist when it comes to Israel, but how do we coin the conservative label when Gold's main theme for the conflict is encouraging us to look at what happens every time Israel DOES cede land that THEY held onto by being the victor of a grossly-agressive war by the major Arabic countries. Look at Hamas in Gaza, exterminating all their Fatah "brothers," showing us that the muhajadeen applies to their own kind as well.

Gore's book is a real justice and service that lends some researched wisdom as to what's been happening in Israel, and how other Arabic nations are overwhelmingly complicit in the plight of the Palestinians. What else can we expect from a people who declare all of Palestine theirs by right, have rejected statehood 3 times, and have it in their charter (Hamas, Fatah) and educational materials (The PA) to disregard Jews as human and an unregognizing of Israel's right to live and survive? As we've seen, we can't expect much, only chaos, wasted Western money that helped almost no Palestinian when it's in their hands, and a drive to throwback tribalism that knows no bounds as to the glories of fighting Jews and infidels. This is a great history book that should be on everyone's shelves, even if you wish to "hear no evil, see no evil," which I like to call "disagreeing" with it.

Again, if there is to be any alternative to religous and secular tolerance in the Middle East, it has proven only to be in Israel, and the state's poliltical and religious flag, Jerusalem, cannot be given over or divided if it is to remain that way. Dore Gold has made that painstakingly clear, and it gives us great hope to see the victories of Israel against forces that would see it otherwise--which is most of the world.

5 out of 5 stars excellent analysis of issues about Jerusalem.......2007-06-27

Dore Gold writes with typical clarity concerning the issues concerning Jerusalem, including the battles going back through the ages. If you want to get a readable, informative history, then get this book.

1 out of 5 stars Propaganda passing for scholarly research.......2007-06-05

Dore Gold is one of the hardline political opeatives who worked for Ariel Sharon and found Sharon's moderating politics towards the end of his political careeer not to his liking. Gold's view of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is quite close to the ultra-nationalist politics of Likud. For him, any compromise with the Palestinians enourages more terror. Hamas are no better than the Taliban. If Israel gives them an inch of Jerusalem they will take a mile and turn Jerusalem into the capital of the new world-wide Muslim caliphate.

Despite miles of footntoes, Gold relies for evidence on surprisingly flimsy reeds: podcasts, websites, sermons and books are the proof he uses to claim that there is a worldwide Muslim conspiracy to take over Jerusalem and the rest of the western world.

If you're a neocon or a hardline supporter of the Israeli right, you'll love this book. It will confirm all yr worst fears of Arabs. But if you try to keep an open mind about this conflict and find both fault and favor with both sides, then steer clear. This is a propaganda tract that passes itself off as a thoroughly researched scholarly tome.

5 out of 5 stars The fight for Jerusalem and the clash of civilizations .......2007-05-16

This book is divided into three sections. In the first the religious dimension of Jerusalem is considered. The meaning of Jerusalem for Ancient Israel, for Christianity , and for Classical Islam are accurately and fairly outlined. In the second part of the book which considers the diplomatic struggle over Jerusalem, there is chapter devoted to the Birth of 'Modern Israel', one to 'Jerusalem, the Palestinian Arabs and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan', and one to the 'Arab- Israel Peace Process.' The third and most important section of the book is devoted to Radical Islam and Jerusalem. There is a chapter on 'Destruction of the Holy Sites', one on 'Jerusalem as Apocalyptic Trigger for Radical Islam, one 'The West and the Freedom of Jerusalem'.
In this third section of the book Gold gives a short history of the development of Radical Islam. He tells of the Islamic destruction of the religious sites of other faiths, from the largest Buddhist statues in the world in Afghanistan to sites in the heart of the Arab world. He shows how Western diplomatic concessions have not led to moderation but rather an intensification of fanaticism by radical Islamists. He tells the story of the Muslim destruction of important archaeological remains in Jerusalem. He shows how radical Islam's obsession with Jerusalem is another manifestation of the clash of civilizations between radical Islam and other religious faiths and civilizations.
The demonstrating of Islamic disrespect and destruction for the Holy Places of others is at the heart of his argument that Jerusalem must remain undivided under Israeli rule. Additional evidence for this claim is given by the Palestinian reaction to Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, and the Shiite Hizbollah's reaction to Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon. Both of these withdrawals did not lead to moderation and peace, but rather to more violence against Israel. Gold shows how the Islamist Palestinians have when given civilian control over a city or area persecuted and led to the exile of its Christians .The most blatant example is Bethlehem which has not simply lost its Christian majority but seen the greatest share of its Christian population leave the City. Gold says that had Israel in September 2000 relinquished control over the Old City of Jerusalem to the Palestinians the result would have been the destruction of a a good share of it. Gold also considers the possibility of internationalization of the Holy City , and provides convincing evidence that the U.N. could not handle this job effectively any more than it handled the job in Rwanda or Bosnia. Gold also points to the inherent prejudice of the U.N. against Israel, and says it could never be a fair and efficient manager of the Holy Sites.
This book makes a very strong case for Israel's maintaining exclusive control of the city.
But the arguments it presents focus more on the negatives of Islamic control than the positives of Israeli control. I would have liked to see more expansive treatment of how Israel has enhanced the city since taking over the Old City in 1967.
Nonetheless this is a must read for those for whom Jerusalem, and its future, is dear.

    Book Description

Angels and Demons and The Da Vinci Code, by author Dan Brown, have deceived millions of people across the world with a plethora of lies about the one true God, Christianity, the Holy Bible, and the Christian Church. Dan Brown has achieved this by presenting the elements in his novels under the guise of fiction, while at the same time, claiming that they are factual. But even Brown's "facts," which he maintains are historically informed, are full of inaccuracies and historical discrepancies. What Dan Brown is describing in Angels and Demons and The Da Vinci Code can most certainly not be categorized as fiction, because in reality, the core and foundation of his writing is Theological and Christological. However, the Theology and Christology which Dan Brown has incorporated into his novels is a false Theology and Christology?-?it is grossly distorted and stridently far from the truth. This apologetic work sets out to provide the true Theological and Christological teachings of the Holy Orthodox Church in response to the deceptions in the selected writings of Dan Brown.

    4 out of 5 stars I love to read and I love God's Word.......2006-03-13

I really love to read although I do not have a lot of time to do so presently. I went to a Biblical research college and I did not want and "edited" version of an audio Bible, nor did I want a dramatized version or music behind it (I find that too distracting). I qualified for free shipping and my order came much faster than I anticipated, or even as stated when I completed the purchase. Amazon was very helpful when I asked if a different audio Bible came in a case or not. This one came in a nice case. I was already familiar with Alexander Scourby (which is who reads the Old Testament of this order) and was not aware that James Earl Jones reads the New Testament. It is very pleasant, but a bit too soothing for a long road trip. I am very pleased with my order and will be an Amazon customer for life!

I honestly think this is one of the most wonderful, deep, profound books on the nature of God that's ever been written.
Tozer wrote, and spoke, so much awesome truth about the attributes of God - but this is his most succinct, intense, short, boiled down version of all that wonderful revelation.
    I strongly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Know WHOM you worship and why you do it.......2007-06-26

This book is like an oasis in the middle of our busy lives. Here we get closer to God because we learn to know Him and thus, to love Him.

This book reminds us that we are not to mistake God for a nice fellow whose job is to help us out. No, this one is an earth-shaking book. It inspires awe in the hearts of the fainted, it awakes you from your self-deluding day-dreams. By describing His attributes (holiness, immutability, divine omniscience, wisdom, omnipotence, transcendence, omnipresence, faithfulness, goodness, justice, mercy, grace, love, sovereignty...) is describes Him, and it produces a humbling experience in us so great that we feel embarrassed to spend so much time thinking of ourselves and so little of Him.

It is a shame that we only remember Him to ask favors or to thank Him mechanically for blessings; if we only took some time to really focus on Him, to contemplate all His attributes, what He is and does in the world and in our lives. If we could only appreciate Him more completely, and not so narrowly... it would be humbling and awe-inspiring.

This book really helps those who have a mechanical faith: a faith that has stopped growing because the focus has narrowed into attitudes like: "business as usual", or "it's all about me", or "what should I do". And we don't think about Him (the Trinity) actually; we think about things, whether spiritual or worldy, but things anyhow. Well, stop or you'll extenuate yourself. Focus of Him: Father, Son & Holy Spirit. How? Here are His attributes explained. It gives a completely new meaning to the words 'praise and worship' because, when you finish the book, you'll really know Who you are praising and worshipping. It won't be mechanical any longer.

Then we can truly say that knowing Him is loving Him. Amen.

5 out of 5 stars Know our God!.......2007-06-08

For those who are seeking to know more about God, this is a book that should be among the first to be read. As author A.W. Tozer states in the very first chapter of his book, "We tend by a secret law of the soul to move toward our mental image of God." "The man who comes to a right belief about God is relieved of ten thousand temporal problems." "There is scarcely an error in doctrine or a failure in applying Christian ethics that cannot be traced finally to imperfect and ignoble thoughts about God." And then he launches into describing the God about whom we truly know so little, by examining, one by one, His attributes: His self-sufficiency, His eternity, His omniscience, sovereignty, holiness, etc.

If the reader's search to know his God is a heartfelt one, he should be prepared to be surprised and awed by what Tozer reveals. For he examines God's attributes thoroughly and with a clarity born of great wisdom. For the seeking Christian, this book will be a treasure. Otherwise, of course, this book will make no sense at all.

For me, an added bonus was the writing style of Tozer. As an author who lived during the first half of the 1900s, he obviously belonged to that age which greatly valued literature, and wrote accordingly. I reveled in the beautiful way he expressed himself: "The heaviest obligation lying upon the Christian Church today is to purify and elevate her concept of God until it is once more worthy of Him."

5 out of 5 stars Not perfect, but excellent!.......2007-08-01

I am totally enthralled with this CD set of the Holy Bible. I like the reader of the Old Testament better than the New Testament, but I like the idea that there are two different voices. I have found a couple of glitches, like where the end of a chapter gets cut off abruptly and then the next chapter begins. This however was not enough in my opinion to give less than the best grade.

It totally amazes me how much I understand just listening to the CDs. I thought I was going to listen while I read and this would keep me "on track," so to speak, but I find I enjoy just listening, and this way I rest my eyes, and also get great comprehension. I personally don't find I get much comprehension while driving, but others have commented to the opposite, and I can't disprove what they say, it's just this isn't an application that works for me.

If any producers of Bibles on CD are reading, I would like to give my "suggestions" for improvement. I would like no CD to start or end in the middle of a chapter. My utmost preference would be for each Bible book to be on its own CD, I realize that some of smaller books would have to be combined onto a single CD, and I also realize my "suggestion" would mean the CDs weren't all of equal time length, that's just the way I would like it! I also think I would enjoy a variety of voices in the complete set, perhaps a female voice, even a youth's or child's voice (but of course with clear pronunciation and soothing tonal quality.

All in all, I think this is a great CD set. I would recommend it highly as a gift for anyone who loves the Bible. The carrying case is also great, I didn't expect that and it's beautiful and useful and and "serendipity."

I have read several translations of the Quran, and this is by far my
favorite. It is written beautifully and the commentaries are very
helpful. I highly recommend this version.

4 out of 5 stars Good translation but is it Yusuf Ali?.......2007-07-21

This is a pretty good translation (transliteration) well put together and a little easier to read than that of Pickthall and includes an exellent comentary to the text which I have to say, is prtty important as the Quran is a difficult book to read.

My only problem is that just how much of this transliteration and comentary is that of Yusuf Ali and how much of it has been revised, changed, altered etc...... Recent editions have been published in Saudi Arabia or with Saudi money with the title 'Revised edition' would be interesting to read the original.

I have plowed through almost 60 of the (at this time) 69 "reviews" of this translation. SAVE YOURSELF THE TROUBLE!

Amazon.com sometimes lets the "customer review" section become nothing more than a chat room for a bunch screeching polemicists who give no indication of having read the book being reviewed and who certainly give no useful information about it. THIS IS ONE OF THOSE SECTIONS.

Continue only if your taste for screed, invective, and (yes) threats of physical violence is high.

If you wanted a review, this is NOT the place.

I came here because the paperback edition of this same translation was reviewed by one person as being inferior in print quality. If it is so, nobody here seems to care.

I suggest that you read the reviews at The Holy Qur'an: Text, Translation and Commentary

The Arabic script is big enough to actually read! The choice of script is also good, in that it is not overy ornate and very much like that used in popular books for learning Arabic. There is also some interesting commentary that does not seem over the top.

S18 v86 when he reached the setting of the sun, he found it set in a spring of murky water: Near it he found a People: We said: "O Zul-qarnain! (thou hast authority,) either to punish them, or to treat them with kindness."

This is to the error in quran ...................its is simple if you go to any beach and observed the sun you will see it setting in water(appearance) so it says in Quran that HE Zul-qarnain! found it set in a spring of murky water, it has nothing to do with creator and there is no mistake.

The Quran talks about Zul-qarnain not the shape of earth.

Read the Quran and find out shape of earth, creation of humans, plants, animals much much more. the Quran says there is not a quation that it can't answer if you have difficulty ask a muslim to help

There are more than 1000 verses in Quran dealing with science. challenge to any one to prove them wrong with proven scientific facts not assumptions

Other scriptures I could write a book, Atheism refer to the Quran you will find what, the term God means.

The insight and understanding Dr. Munroe has in regards to the kingom message of Jesus is incredible. For centuries this message has been misunderstood and mishandled mostly because we live in the western part of the world and have no concept of what a kingom is or how it functions making it difficult for us to understand the basic concepts of the Bible because we approach it from a democratic mentality. Because Dr. Munroe was born under the Kingom of Great Britain, he brings not only perspective but real life experience. I believe this book will help every kingom citizen regardless of denomination grasp the big picture of God's original plan of God for humanity and His plan for implementing His kingom purposes. This book will make you want to re-read, re-study, and re-assess the Bible because it helps us as a global church rediscover God's original mandate.

For quite some time I have been studying the specificity of the Kingdom of God/Heaven. Myles' contribution in this teaching is quite simply the most enlightening that I have studied next to the scriptures themselves. One can really learn and understand who they are in the Kingdom and how important the role of Holy Spirit is in our lives and in the Kingdom. I would highly recommend this to anyone who seriously wants to learn to have more power over his or her own lives.

This is the most eye-opening, inspirational book I've read in a long time. Dr. Munroe makes the Kingdom of God real and let's me know that I have an important place there. I'm more excited about being a child of God (citizen of Heaven) than ever before - I can hardly wait to see what Father/King has in store for me in the future. Thank you, Dr. Munroe, for this wonderful revelation.

"Long before we do anything explicitly religious at all, we have to do something about the fire that burns within us," writes Ronald Rolheiser. "What we do with that fire, how we channel it, is our spirituality." From the opening chapter, where Rolheiser eloquently compares the burning spiritual fire of Mother Teresa, Janice Joplin, and Princess Diana, readers will be fully engaged in a unique and altogether fascinating discussion of Christian spirituality.

As a regular columnist for the Catholic Herald, Rolheiser has clearly honed his writing skills. Like an eloquent marriage counselor, he deftly tries to reconcile the rift between contemporary spirituality and Christianity. For example, he points to the four pillars that support a healthy marriage of Christianity and spirituality, which are "Private prayer and private morality. Social justice. Mellowness of heart and spirit. Community as a constitutive element of true worship." Building upon these pillars, Rolheiser delves into the more challenging marital tensions with chapters such as "Christ as the Basis for Christian Spirituality" and a "Spirituality of Sexuality." This is an excellent book for any Christian who has longs to create a more holy and lasting spiritual union. --Gail Hudson

    Book Description

Ronald Rolheiser makes sense of what is frequently a misunderstood word: spirituality. In posing the question "What is spirituality?" Father Rolheiser gets quickly to the heart of common difficulties with the subject, and shows through compelling anecdotes and personal examples how to channel that restlessness, that deep desire, into a healthy spirituality.

This book is for those searching to understand what Christian spirituality means and how to apply it to their own lives.  Rolheiser explains the nonnegotiables--the importance of community worship, the imperatives surrounding social action, the centrality of the Incarnation, the sustenance of the spiritual life--and how spirituality necessarily impacts every aspect of human experience.  At the core of this readable, deeply revealing book is an explanation of God and the Church in a world that more often than not doubts the credibility of both.

    3 out of 5 stars Classical Catholicism........2007-07-16

This review offers an anecdotal story. I read this book when it was first published in 1999. After reading the first three chapters, I was excited that this new voice was following in a few sets of footprints of progressive Catholic Leaders like Richard Rohr, Matt Fox, and Diarmuid O'Murchi, to name a few.

Then I got to chapter four only to discover that this was just another book on spirituality in the genre of Catholic orthodoxy. Having left the Catholic Church many years before this book was published, I wrote the author via email to comment on his book. I was surprised when he got back to me. While I don't remember the entirety of the author's remarks, I do remember that he was positive and kind. One point that he made, however, is that he thought that I would not find a home in another tradition. Having been out of the Catholic Church now for over twenty years, I can state categorically that the Church holds absolutely no influence over my spiritual life or my relationship with the ineffable which we all serve.

It is interesting to note that the Catholic Church has morphed even further rightward with the election of Ratzinger as Pope. From a historical perspective, I suppose this event is just a passing cloud on the backdrop of history. All extreme ideologies lose the force of their impact with time, as truth will overcome in the end.

While I agree with the author's fundamental thesis concerning our relationship to God, one does not need the Catholic Church as an intermediary to accomplish that goal. Contrary to the Pope's recent public comments, the Catholic Church represents one religion among many. To assert that the Catholic Church is the "one true" Church is an insult to the vast majority of people on the planet engaging meaningful work on behalf of justice outside of this organization. These types of proclamations only divide people rather than bring them together in mutual respect and dignity. A lesson Mr. Ratzinger might learn to abide by, before his next irrelevant outburst.

    5 out of 5 stars Soal searching.......2007-05-13

Has me hooked on Rolheiser's take on what truly is inside each of us; an "energy and fire" that needs to be quenched. Fr. Rolheiser offers many options on how to contain, release and express this "fire within", and at the same time knowing that it is the Spirit of God working within you. Read the book, I read it twice so far. You will be amazed at how you think after reading it.

5 out of 5 stars A book that breaks down the boundaries.......2007-04-05

For those who have often shook their heads in dismay at the constant schitzophrenic warmongering between secular ideals and Christian beliefs, this book is a breath of fresh spiritual air. It is written in a straightforward comprehensive language and yet does not attempt to dismantle the basic tenets of Christian belief. Those who want a deeper understanding of the essential ideas which religion couches in antiquated and dogmatic terms will find in this book a blessing. Rolheiser, like any good writer, puts into simple and precise terms the anxiety and anguish that those who stand in the razor thin neutral zone between the religious and secular worlds feel. He is also refreshingly non-judgemental, reflexive and intelligent in his approach. This book is a wonder.

    5 out of 5 stars Christian spirituality.......2007-03-25

Rolheiser writes with incredible clarity about a topic which can be confusing and difficult to understand. I would recommend this book highly to any individual struggling to understand either Christian spirituality or the demands of living a Christian life. Outstanding!!!

5 out of 5 stars Are You on a Course for Life-Giving or Destructive Spirituality?.......2007-02-11

"Everyone has to have a spirituality - either a life-giving one or a destructive one."

So begins Author Ronald Rolheiser's examination of Christian Spirituality in what has become his classic work, "The Holy Longing." Rolheiser writes with uncommon clarity in providing a foundation for Christian Spirituality and in stimulating us to rethink spirituality and our own spiritual journey. Rolheiser shows us that it is not enough to be "spiritual but not religious." The book will either be a reawakening or a disappointment to those who describe themselves this way.

Spirituality, Rolheiser points out, is about what we do with our souls and is subject of concern for all of us. "Spirituality is about being integrated or falling apart, about being within community or being lonely, about being in harmony with Mother Earth or being alienated from her. Spirituality shapes our actions, and in turn, our desire. Desire makes us act and when we act what we do will either lead to greater integration or disintegration within our personalities, minds, bodies...and to a strengthening or deterioration of our relationship to God, others, or the cosmic world."

Our age constitutes a virtual conspiracy against the interior life - narcissism, pragmatism, and unbridled restlessness. And today's secular society looks on Christian Spirituality with suspicion so in its place we now have cults of physical health, new gods (celebrities, star athletes) and new shrines (stadiums, pageants, reality TV). So, how are we to satisfy our fundamental dis-ease, that holy longing - that unquenchable fire that renders us incapable, in this life, of ever coming to full peace?

Rolheiser points the way. After defining the situation and the current struggle for our soul, Rolheiser provides an outline for a Christian Sprituality, the basis for Christian Spirituality (the Incarnation), and key spiritualities within a spirituality including ecclesiology, the Paschal Mystery, justice and peacemaking, and sexuality.

Rolheiser in "The Holy Longing" shows how true Christian Spirituality can come close to quenching the unquenchable and how spirituality is essential to having a healthy soul which holds us together and keeps us energized.

After the terrorist attacks of September 11, many Americans yearned to understand why Muslim extremists felt such passionate animosity toward the Western world, particularly the United States. Since that historic attack there have been many books and discussions about this very question, but few of them offer such a readable and relevant response as this excellent offering by renowned historian Bernard Lewis (What Went Wrong?). For modern Westerners, Islam is an especially foreign religion and culture to understand. For instance, Westerners typically dismiss things as unimportant when using the expression "that's history." But for those raised in Muslim households, history—even ancient history—is just as important (if not more important) as the present. And to better understand the hostilities rooted in this history—one could start with recognizing the long-standing resentment the Islamic community harbors from having its homelands torn apart and re-packaged into random political states by occupying Europeans (Westerners). Or stretch back in time to the brutality of the Crusades. Or go straight to the U.S. political meddling in the region throughout the latter 20th century.

This is not a pity fest for Muslims. Lewis even-handedly explores the sources of Islamic antagonism toward the West while also explaining how a supposedly peace-worshipping religion could be so distorted by violent extremism. He notes that the American way of life—especially that of fulfillment through material gain and sexual freedom—is a direct threat to Islamic values (which is why night clubs—places where men and women publicly touch one another—are targets of bombings). But it is basic Western democracy that especially threatens Islamic extremists, notes Lewis, because within its own community more and more Muslims are coming to value the freedom that political democracy allows. For anyone wanting an intelligent and accessible primer on the Islamic-Western conflict, this is an excellent place to begin. Gail Hudson

    Book Description

In his first book since What Went Wrong? Bernard Lewis examines the historical roots of the resentments that dominate the Islamic world today and that are increasingly being expressed in acts of terrorism. He looks at the theological origins of political Islam and takes us through the rise of militant Islam in Iran, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia, examining the impact of radical Wahhabi proselytizing, and Saudi oil money, on the rest of the Islamic world.

The Crisis of Islam ranges widely through thirteen centuries of history, but in particular it charts the key events of the twentieth century leading up to the violent confrontations of today: the creation of the state of Israel, the Cold War, the Iranian Revolution, the Soviet defeat in Afghanistan, the Gulf War, and the September 11th attacks on the United States.

While hostility toward the West has a long and varied history in the lands of Islam, its current concentration on America is new. So too is the cult of the suicide bomber. Brilliantly disentangling the crosscurrents of Middle Eastern history from the rhetoric of its manipulators, Bernard Lewis helps us understand the reasons for the increasingly dogmatic rejection of modernity by many in the Muslim world in favor of a return to a sacred past. Based on his George Polk Award–winning article for The New Yorker, The Crisis of Islam is essential reading for anyone who wants to know what Usama bin Ladin represents and why his murderous message resonates so widely in the Islamic world.

1 out of 5 stars Crisis of Islam? What Crisis? .......2007-09-28

Sophmoric reasoning, innuendo, and misleading "facts" characterize "The Crisis of Islam" by Bernard Lewis, the US's best known scholar of the Middle East.

The first 60-70 pages of this brief book are a relatively dispassionate examination of why the Muslims are different from Christians. There are insights here worthy of attention -- although hardly original or brilliantly insightful. But the last 100 pages take on the character of a gradually building diatribe against the Islamic countries.

To give just one example of Lewis's misleading the reader, he characterizes the statistics about economic progress and quality of life in the Islamic countries as "devastating" (page 114). He reels off several pages of statistics to prove his point. Let's take just one set of figures and apply a degree of objectivity to it. The most widely accepted comparison among countries of quality of life is the "human development index" of the UN. Lewis portrays it as a "dismal picture" that Muslim countries do not rank higher. Brunei ranks 32, Kuwait 36, Bahrain 40, Libya 66, etc. But how bad are those rankings? Well, better than India, China, and Brazil -- which are often cited as the coming super-powers. And better than Russia, and better than more than 100 other countries in Africa, Latin America, and Asia. (The Human Development Index rates 177 countries in its latest version. The US ranks 8.)

Lewis insinuates that all the Middle Eastern Muslim countries rank near the bottom in terms of industry, education, life expectancy, and other quality of life indicators. That's plain wrong. A careful and objective scholar would have evaluated the statistics with more fairness. The Middle Eastern ountries as a group might be better described as "middling" or even "above average" in quality of life compared to the hundreds of millions of destitute poor in economic "powerhouses" like India and China or in truly poor countries in Africa.

Not that the Middle Eastern countries don't have problems. An unbiased scholar would note that they lag behind the West and several Asian countries in social and economic development. He might have a defensible case if he called their progress in the last 50 years "disappointing" compared to, say, South Korea. But for Lewis to throw all -- or even a majority of -- Middle Eastern countries into a pot of despair, poverty, backwardness, and evil is silly, wrong, and misleading. He's describing the half-empty glass, without giving the other side, the half-full glass. Fifty years ago Dubai was a flyspeck. Today, it's vying with Malaysia, another Muslim country, to construct the world's tallest building and buying chunks of the NASDAQ and the LSE.

Scholars of the Middle East like to talk about the Arab "street." If such a "street" exists, Lewis hasn't found it. Unfortunately, he has been influential over the decades in building up a body of biased scholarship.

Does a great job explaining the Middle East SNAFU, unlike any News Media channel!

    4 out of 5 stars Bernard Lewis is a Right-Wing Neo-Con sellout, but he knows a lot:.......2007-05-07

Whether you lean on the right or left side of the paradigm is your own personal business, but I have to say after reading this book. I can now say without a doubt that I have a better grasp of the issues that engulf the Middle East. Bernard Lewis is a historian with impeccable credentials. In the book Lewis takes you through Middle Eastern history and explains the politics that metastasized from it. You won't believe that a 169-page book could pack so much information.
I'm not going to give away too much info, but I have to remind you to be circumspect when reading this book his opinions are in favor of the Zionist.
In chapter 3 of the book Lewis writes about the capture of Jerusalem by the Crusaders in 1099 AD. To get the other side of the story I recommend "Arab Historians of the Crusades" translated by Francesco Gabrieli.
Moreover, chapter 3 then takes you through the second Turkish siege of Vienna, in 1683, which was a defeat for the Ottoman Turks, and by 1914 Germany allied themselves with the Muslim element in the British, French and Russian empires, which paid off in 1933 when the Mufti of Jerusalem allied himself with the Nazis.
In chapter 4 Lewis writes about the early encounters between the Muslim world and America. He ends chapter 4 in 2002. Only a scholar like Lewis could meticulously cram so much info in such a little book.
This was a great book, but don't believe everything in it. For example, Al'Qaeda doesn't really exist, and Osama bin Laden is really working for the CIA. Lewis will never divulge that information because of what side of the fence he dwells on. So if you want the complete story I recommend "The Terror Conspiracy" by Jim Marrs.
Even still, Bernard Lewis like Noam Chomsky is required reading.

I am enrolled in an Air Force program that required reading three books off of the Chief of Staff Reading List. I chose this book to try and help me understand the Middle East and it has. It has raised more questions for me than answers, which is a mark of a good book to me. I spend time thinking about it after I've read a chapter and I can't say all books stick with me like that. It is an easy read and helps someone not familiary with the Middle East to understand the way they think and where their animosity towards the West comes from. Very interesting and thought provoking read, I would suggest it.
