Book Description

The high priestess of the hood, Nikki Turner, is back with the novel fans have been feenin’ for: the sequel to her #1 bestselling novel, A Hustler’s Wife.

Des, Virginia’s slickest gangsta, is about to become a dad when he is charged with the murder of his own attorney. But with Yarni, his gorgeous wife (and a brilliant lawyer), now calling the shots, Des isn’t going back to the slammer without a fierce fight. Even with the heat on, Des manages to take his game to the next level and finds a new hustle, one that will allow him to possess the three things all major players desire: money, power, and respect. He becomes a preacher. Reluctantly, Yarni stands by her man as he trades in his triple beam scale for a Bible and a Bentley and makes his Church of the Good Life Ministry a welcoming place for all sinners to step up to the altar.

But when Des’s nephew is killed in the high-stakes heroin trade and Des learns that someone close to him okayed the hit, the dyed-in-the-wool gangsta sets aside the Bible for the gospel of the streets–even if it means risking the one person who’s always had his back.

2 out of 5 stars What happened? The book was rushed.........2007-10-05

I am a big fan of Nikki Turner, especially her novels "A Hustler's wife" & "Riding Dirty on I-95". BUT FOREVER A HUSTLER'S WIFE was indeed rushed and a fairytale comparing it to her other novels and to the first book. I most definitely was dissappointed with the novel. If I would have not read her other novels and "Forever A Hustler's Wife" would have been my first read by Nikki Turner then I wouldnt have misunderstood the hype about her urban literary skills.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!!! Awesome!!!.......2007-09-18

I really enjoyed reading this book. I searched 4 book stores for this book and they were all sold out. When I finally found it on amazon, I had to get it immediately. I finished this book in about 2 days. I just could not put it down. Everytime I started to put it down, it got good again. Thanks Nikki.

4 out of 5 stars La Dee Da Dee Da.......2007-08-25

The sequel was a bit disappointing. I did get through it but it took me a couple of days. It was an ok book but it wasn't one of those books where I had to read it during every free moment I have. I still had to ween my way through the grammatical errors (fault of the publisher), but it was alright. Some of the stuff was a bit far-fetched. I am from the streets so I have a clue. You can read the 2 books or not read them. I will continue to check her out though. I see here writing skills evolving with time. I recommend support Turner and her writings. Peace and Blessings!

4 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-08-20

I thought Forever a Hustlers Wife was a GREAT come back. Of course I thought it wasn't as good as A Hustlers Wife, but it was good enough to ease my craving to know where Des and Yarni end up. Reading the Special Message at the beginning really gave me a new respect for writers! This was a great story despite all the struggles Nikki has gone through, and although it wasn't the best I have faith in her that she will come back with something that will blow her fans away!

3 out of 5 stars Forever a hustler's wife.......2007-08-13

First you must read a hustler wife it is a great book 5 stars. Now forever a hustlers wife dosn't do justice to the first novel. it is okay, the book had to many things going on. Bambi from Glamorous life had a part, new characters, Lava who is Des Nephew's girl needs her own book she is a great character. All and all the book was okay it was not as good as hustlers wife, glamorous life, project chick, nor riding drity on I-95 this book is at the bottom of the list for Nikki Turner books. i gave it 3 stars because you cannot give 2.5 stars. Nikki Turner is a great writer it was just probably hard following up on such a great book.

4 out of 5 stars Bond does Vegas.......2007-09-15

One of the big movies of recent times was Blood Diamonds, a grim action movie dealing with conflict diamonds, those mined in certain African countries in states of civil war. A few years before that, the final Pierce-Brosnan-as-James-Bond movie, Die Another Day also dealt with these diamonds. Ian Fleming had first introduced Bond fans to the African diamond trade much earlier, however, in 1956 with Diamonds Are Forever (and a year later, he would come out with a non-Bond novel called The Diamond Smugglers which also dealt with the subject). Moviewise, this is most noted as being the last "official" Bond movie featuring Sean Connery (Never Say Never Again, a remake of Thunderball, is not considered part of the official canon).

This fourth Bond novel has the British Secret Service agent contending with diamond smugglers who are sending the gems from Africa to England and then to the United States. When Bond first receives his assignment - to impersonate a smuggler and determine how the pipeline is organized - he treats it as something of a lark. After contending with SMERSH and other professional spies and assassins, dealing with simple American gangsters should be a breeze. Bond is to soon find out that he is underestimating the opposition.

In England, Bond meets the beautiful Tiffany Case who works for the smugglers. Like most women in Bond stories, Tiffany has had a rough past, but only needs the (physical) love of a good man (that is, Bond) to be healed. (Such damaged women are actually a staple in the so-called "men's fiction" of decades ago.) Tiffany gives the diamonds to Bond hidden in golf balls, and the smuggling goes fine; the "hot ice" arrives fine in New York. When complications arise regarding Bond's payment, he goes to Las Vegas where the pipeline also ends.

This is another fun Bond novel, albeit not the strongest in the set. Its big lack is a real good villain, although some of the bad guys are at least a bit interesting. As usual, the action is much more limited than the movies, but the trade-off is a bit more depth of character, though I'd be hard-pressed to call this a character-driven novel. It is, instead, pure entertainment, which is exactly what Fleming intended and succeeded in doing. This is another worthwhile read for literary Bond fans.

4 out of 5 stars Super Reader.......2007-08-04

This novel has an opponent for Bond that is quite different. He is sent by M to look into diamond smuggling in Africa, that he determines is run buy the American Spangled Mob. After infiltration, he comes across the nasty assassins Wint and Kidd, part of the gang, and the attractive Tiffany Case, who he develops a serious thing for.

The diamond smuggling happens by dentist and a few other tricks. Felix Leiter lends a hand, now out of the CIA due to the shark bite problems, and working privately.

3 out of 5 stars Bond vs. The Spagled Mob.......2007-08-02

There are a few slow parts in the story, but I overall enjoyed it more than I did reading Moonraker, which is the novel before this one. In this novel, Bond goes to America so he can find who is smuggling diamonds there from Africa. While doing so, he becomes involved with the mob and meets a beautiful woman named Tiffany Case. That's the basic story, which is completely different from the movie once again.

If you are into stories about the mafia, then this book is definitely something that you should pick up and read. If you are not interested in criminal activity such as the mob, then this will probably not appeal to you as much. But if you are like me, you are planning to read all of the Fleming Bond novels anyway. Overall, a good story but not the best in the series.

2 out of 5 stars Definitely not the best Bond.......2007-06-27

If you're new to Bond, start with Casino Royale or Moonraker, two gems. Diamonds are Forever had some high points, but way too much slow-paced action, description of what Bond is eating, pointless scenes that have you skimming pages to get to the point, etc. Nothing like the gripping tension of the aforementioned two volumes.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Bond Book.......2007-05-09

I've read all of Ian Fleming's Bond books and they are all great (with the exception of "casino royal"). But this is the very best one! The action sequences in it keeping you on the edge of your seat! i would sugest that you read this book! its fast paced and you wont want to put it down until the very end.

Book Description

Every so often a character so captures the hearts and imaginations of readers that he seems to take on a life of his own long after the final page is turned. For such a character, one book is not enough—readers must know what happens next. Now Dean Koontz returns with the novel his fans have been demanding. With the emotional power and sheer storytelling artistry that are his trademarks, Koontz takes up once more the story of a unique young hero and an eccentric little town in a tale that is equal parts suspense and terror, adventure and mystery—and altogether irresistibly odd.

We’re all a little odd beneath the surface. He’s the most unlikely hero you’ll ever meet—an ordinary guy with a modest job you might never look at twice. But there’s so much more to any of us than meets the eye—and that goes triple for Odd Thomas. For Odd lives always between two worlds in the small desert town of Pico Mundo, where the heroic and the harrowing are everyday events. Odd never asked to communicate with the dead—it’s something that just happened. But as the unofficial goodwill ambassador between our world and theirs, he’s got a duty to do the right thing. That’s the way Odd sees it and that’s why he’s won hearts on both sides of the divide between life and death.

A childhood friend of Odd’s has disappeared. The worst is feared. But as Odd applies his unique talents to the task of finding the missing person, he discovers something worse than a dead body, encounters an enemy of exceptional cunning, and spirals into a vortex of terror. Once again Odd will stand against our worst fears. Around him will gather new allies and old, some living and some not. For in the battle to come, there can be no innocent bystanders, and every sacrifice can tip the balance between despair and hope. Whether you’re meeting Odd Thomas for the first time or he’s already an old friend, you’ll be led on an unforgettable journey through
a world of terror, wonder and delight—to a revelation that can change your life. And you can have no better guide than Odd Thomas.

Love the Odd Thomas books and hope hope hope Dean Koontz comes out with more!

5 out of 5 stars The Second Chapter of Odd.......2007-09-11

First of all, don't read this book unless you have already read Odd Thomas as it contains spoilers for the first book. Just as we don't read the last page first and first page last, or anywhere in between, we also should read books in order for the sake of the story :)

Forever Odd is a good book. With his usual artful style, Koontz flips your emotions as if on a remote control. You feel the fear of the situation, the tension, the thrill, and then flip right back into laughter... and awe. Koontz can tug at your heart strings, but leave you with enough humor that you aren't completely devestated and can smile in spite of it all.

Odd Thomas is a special character. He is one we should all strive to emulate. Compassionate, intelligent, humble, yet confident. And he is surrounded by special people, although they play far less of a role in this book than the previous book.

Not as good as the first, but a close second. Well worth the read and the space on your bookshelf.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as Odd Thomas.......2007-08-29

This book is average at best. It was a disapointment compared to Odd Thomas. Seemed like he was cashing in on the success of the first one.

3 out of 5 stars Forgettable.......2007-08-25

This mildly entertaining sequel to Odd Thomas is told in the voice of the title character, a lonely and gentle man who can see and interact with the dead, even if they cannot speak back. When the novel opens, Odd Thomas is confronted with yet another dead person, this time the adoptive father of his close friend, Danny. When Odd follows him back to the house, he discovers a grisly scene. To complicate matters, Danny, who suffers from brittle bone disease, is missing, and an (overly) mysterious woman calls Odd to taunt him. Odd is haunted by his past heroic deeds and the loss he experiences as a result. The only dead person he wants to see eludes him.

While the final scenes of the book are suspenseful, the novel suffers from Odd's childlike narrative voice and a failure to make the reader care deeply about the characters. This makes the novel forgettable once the last page has been read. Koontz is good enough to know how to keep the reader turning pages; however, this time his story is too thin and, in some ways, self-indulgent. I could imagine Koontz chuckling over his prose as he reincarnated Elvis again and again. I would have rather done the smiling myself.

Certainly those who loved Odd Thomas should read this novel, as Koontz will, in all likelihood, return to this character. Maybe the next novel will be better.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as the first one........2007-08-09

This is a much simpler story. The original characters are there, but you feel the Author's angst to get the sequel completed more than the peril of the characters. The first book "Odd Thomas" is required reading before "Forever Odd".

1 out of 5 stars Give it a rest.......2007-08-02

Does Ms Morgan judge Australia because she is too ashamed to look at her own history? Surely such lessons could have been learned with the Native Peoples of America, or even with the African Americans who were taken as slaves? Does she feel justified to look down her nose at others while ignoring her own historical heritage? Shame shame Ms Morgan. People who live in glass houses should not throw stones.

Only a non-Australian who had never even bothered to visit this country would get anything worthwhile out of this rubbish.

5 out of 5 stars Mutant Message.......2006-05-28

The style and story of this book was intense and a major eye-opener for me. I found the answer for a problem I had been grappling with for some time. So, I would say this book is wonderful...no matter how the author came to aquire her knowledge of spiritual matters. I don't care if the story is "true" or not. It is deeply touching and meaningful.

1 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK IS A FAKE !!! PLEASE READ ..........2005-08-02

This book along with MM's first work is a fake. Listed below is a time-line indicating this authors recent admission. Please do not buy this book and support anyone that would exploit indigenous people. MM is a disgusting human being.
Just "google" the topic if you have any doubts.

1996 Morgan apologises to the Aboriginals - book support retracted
January 26: A delegation of 8 Aboriginal Elders leave for the United States to defend their religion and culture and to block the move by Hollywood executives at United Artists to turn Marlo Morgan's claims into a major motion picture [9, 26]. Morgan sold the film rights for U$1.8 million [11].
January 31: The elders receive an apology. "Morgan admitted for the first time to the eight elders that her work was fiction and a fabrication" [5, 26]. She said: "I would like to say that I'm terribly sorry and my sincere, my sincere apologies to any Australian Aboriginal person if I have offended them in any way." [10]
Dr. John Stanton (Berndt Museum of Anthropology, WA) "said the book contained misleading and damaging information about Aboriginal people" [5]. He was not sure, he said, "whether the damage the book had done to the overseas image of Aboriginal culture, which was complex, diverse and vibrant, could be ever undone." Morgan promised a written apology, which she actually never produced [6].
March 4: Burnum Burnum retracts support for Marlo Morgan [7] in a letter to the Dumbartung Aboriginal Corporation [8].

1997 Aboriginals protest during lectures in Japan
March 25: Eggington calls for "Mutant Message" and the books of two other authors to be taken from all Australian bookshelves and destroyed [14].
April 7: Dumbartung coordinates protest against Morgan's lectures in Japan. Eggington and a Bardi Elder travel there, give press conferences and appear painted and with didgeridoo and boomerangs at two venues. Morgan comments that "they represent all that is bad, and I represent all that is good". Eggington and the elders leave Japan on April 21st [26].
August 18: Burnum Burnum dies [8].
In this year another interview is published in the Golden Age (New Age magazine). Lorraine Mafi Williams, "a traditional teacher and custodian of Aboriginal culture and wisdom" talks about whether the journey was authentic and how the Aboriginal community reacted: "I honestly don't think this woman ever took a walk with anyone except perhaps as a tourist on a tour into the outback." [20]

1998 Morgan publishes a second book
June 1: Harper Collins publish "Message From Forever, A Novel of Aboriginal Wisdom", by Morgan, which she claims "is really written by Aboriginal friends telling me to please do this".
October: phenomeNEWS conducts an interview with Marlo Morgan [16] in which she claims to "have gone back periodically" to the tribe she claimed to have travelled with in the first book. Despite all the uproar there has already been up to that time, phenomeNEWS claim they "were unaware of the controversy surrounding Ms. Morgan and her book" when they did the interview...

1999 Aboriginals outraged again
January: Morgan seems not to have learned from the experiences with "Mutant Message". Her new book again outrages the Aboriginals in Australia. Morgan describes a woman giving birth, but "that is private women's business. For someone to (describe a birth) is insulting and offending to people and their cultural beliefs," says Ms Jo Willmot, chairwoman of the Uluru-Kata Tjuta board of management [13].
May: Film producer Michael Taylor is said to have "entered into agreements for the production of 'Messenger', based on the best seller Mutant Message Down Under" [15].

4 out of 5 stars Who has fear to read the book?.......2005-05-14

When reading the book I can't judge about historical correctness of it. But it's very interesting that this bad review from "an Aboriginal Woman" is not signed with a name, but "a reader".

A review like this I would assume is written by one of the descendents of those white people who were (are) so sure to do the right things with the Aborigines in the past.

Or:
A review like this I assume is written by one who is not willing to accept that there is another way of life and that very basic rules of our "civilized" society might be wrong.

There is one thing to be sure: Those, who accept the message of the book, those will be the last to blame anybody for their opposite opinion. So, why not critizing openly?

5 out of 5 stars a message for all.......2004-01-16

We are all taught to believe and behave a certain way and as we grow older those beleifs are challenged by outside influences. This book gives us a chance to remember and relearn what we know is right. Their wisdom of life is well shared in this book. It is a book all should read

Book Description

This widely praised bestseller is the magical, epic tale of an extraordinary man who arrives in New York in 1740 and remains...forever. Through the eyes of young Cormac O'Connor--granted immortality as long as he never leaves the island of Manhattan--we watch New York grow from a tiny settlement on the tip of an untamed wilderness to the thriving metropolis of today. And through Cormac's remarkable adventures in both love and war, we come to know all the city's buried secrets--the way it has been shaped by greed, race, and waves of immigration, by the unleashing of enormous human energies, and, above all, by hope.

5 out of 5 stars A finely crafted, fascinating novel rich with history and magic........2007-08-12

This is an amazing, beautifully written, spellbinding book. It is the perfect mix of fantasy, history, and adventure. Pete Hamill gives us rich characterizations and displays his wonderful mastery of language. Forever moves forward effortlessly, and is full of detail without being extraneous. It holds a wealth of tidbits of life and customs in other places and times, as well as a fascinating history of the growth of Manhattan Island, intertwined with a character study of one young man who is, in some way or form, every man. This is one of the best books I've read in many years.

1 out of 5 stars Hamill's "Forever" Liberal Bias!.......2007-02-26

I only know Pete Hamill through his fiction "Forever" and his resume containing his writing for the New York Times, the Post etc. etc. The history of New York City in Forever was first of all intriguing, then interesting then tedious and finally "let's skip through these 10 or 11 paragraphs (over and over again). Perhaps one would have to live in Manhattan instead of Columbia, Missouri to stay with all 600+ pages.

What seemed more unsettling was what I perceived to be his strong bias against WASP (white anglo-saxon protestants), Christians, Christian clergy etc. etc. In Forever, everything Christian seemed to be at the root of all evil and those who embrace many gods, sex on a whim, vengeance and revenge are to be elevated to the "Otherworld". I wonder if in Pete Hamill's view of history whether Christians played any positive role in the building of America. In Forever, the clergy, the WASP, and other Christians are the nemesis who totally aided and abetted in all things hurtful.

Perhaps other authors will have to write of Christian charity for the downtrodden immigrants who came to New York City and the Church's bravery and sacrifice regarding the struggle for freedom and the birth of this nation.

I am certain that his many liberal literary accomplishments are applauded by those in the circles he travels, but as for me, I am grateful that I purchased "Forever" at Sam's Club for only $4.88. Whew! That was close.

5 out of 5 stars Will stay with you, well, Forever.......2006-11-23

I picked up this book knowing the basic plot: somehow an Irish immigrant to New York is granted eternal life so long as he never leaves the island of Manhattan. I was willing to give the book a chance only because I knew that Pete Hamill had a love and knowledge of New York that few people possess. At first, I wondered where the book was leading me during the almost 200 introductory pages of Cormac O'Connor in Ireland. But the story really took off once Cormac's father is killed and Cormac vows to avenge his death. Upon Cormac's arrival to the dirty town of Manhattan in the mid eighteenth century, I was already hooked. The next two centuries flew by.

Hamill almost bites off more than he can chew by deciding to write the history of New York City in 600 pages. And so he improvises by having to skip decades at a time. While the history of the City is incomplete, he skips through time effectively, with larger historical events resurfacing as memories within Cormac. The result, however, is that Hamill is only able to focus on a few periods of time in order to make his story work. The reader spends time in the early 1740s, the Revolutionary War of the 1780s, sometime during the first half of the nineteenth century, the last days of Boss Tweed, and the weeks leading up to September 11, 2001. There is some fantasy involved in the story, which admittedly, I don't usually read, but Hamill intertwines it into the story well. I was not bothered at all the times throughout the story when Hamill asked me to suspend my belief in reality. All in all, this is a magical story full of memorable events and characters. The reader who sticks with this book may well be rewarded forever.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2006-11-21

This novel is nothing short of incredible. It started a bit slow, but once I got into it I couldn't put it down. It takes you through the New York you've never known to what it has become, and being from New York, made me appreciate the history that has made our city as diverse and strong as it is. The plot reads like Dumas' Count of Monte Cristo, and is just as captivating, if not more so. Cormac O'Connor will open your eyes to the importance of sacrifice and teach you to always fight for what you believe in. This book blew me away, def worth reading.

4 out of 5 stars Magnificent Manhattan.......2006-11-03

This novel starts slow, but quickly builds momentum. Pete Hamill masterfully draws the reader into the rich tapestry of protagonist, Cormac's experiences on the island of Manhattan. Although the ending could be argued cliche, the novel is worth the journey through the history of Manhattan.

Book Description

In the 1970s science fiction exploded into the popular consciousness, appearing everywhere along the cultural spectrum—from David Bowie’s alien stage persona to the massively successful global juggernaut that was Star Wars. With the American involvement in Vietnam reaching its bitter conclusion, the Apollo moon program ending, and awareness of humanity’s destructive impact on the environment increasing, our planet began to seem a smaller, lonelier, more fragile place—and the escapist appeal of science fiction grew.
Corresponding with these tumultuous events was a period of significant American economic decline, and, as Mike Ashley shows in Gateways to Forever, the once-enormously-popular science fiction magazines struggled to survive. The third volume of this award-winning series chronicles the publications’ most difficult period so far. The decade began with the death of John Campbell Jr., the man who launched the magazine Astonishing, and with it science fiction’s prominence as a genre. The widespread popularization of sci-fi imagery reflected a newly diversified market—new anthologies, fanzines, role-playing games, comics, and blockbuster films all fought for the attention and money of sci-fi fans. Ashley shows how the traditional magazines coped with these setbacks but also how they, as always, looked to the future, as the decade closed and the earliest precursors to the Internet emerged.
Mike Ashley’s groundbreaking history is a monument to science fiction’s evolution. As the genre continues to infiltrate mainstream literature, Gateways to Forever is essential reading for anyone interested in seeing how it all began.

5 out of 5 stars A Clear Look at a Complex Decade.......2007-09-01

Mike Ashley's history of science fiction magazines continues its high standard with "Gateways to Forever." This is the first volume Ashley has devoted to a single decade, but the Seventies were complex enough that he needed to. Topics covered include the decline and fall of If, Galaxy and Fantastic and the emergence of Asimov's and Omni, as well as the challenge posed to the magazines by the original anthologies and the impact of "Star Wars."

Ashley keeps things clear and is remarkably even-handed in his treatment of controversial issues, such as the impact of editor Roger Elwood on the field. He makes the case that Seventies science fiction, often viewed as a dull time between the New Wave and Cyberpunk, was actually quite good and showed how the field was maturing. Strongly recommended to anyone with an interest in how science fiction developed.

5 out of 5 stars I just love Judes books.......2006-12-01

This is the very first book I read by Deveraux.I have since then read almost all of her books. Most being enjoyable.I just loved this book.Adam Montgomery is such a hunk.Of coarse Jude fans what montgomery isn't.Darcey was very intersting and funny. The first of a trilogy

4 out of 5 stars Intriguing and enjoyable fast read.......2006-11-13

This trilogy takes you into another world. Whike the first book is the best one, you still have to read the entire trilogy to experience all the magic this story has to offer. The books start out slow, but become hard to put down once you get into them.

3 out of 5 stars Forever is a wonderful mix of mystery and fairy tale.......2006-07-22

Adam Montgomery, at age three, was kidnapped by a powerful witch and branded. However, the witch was after his sister and when she realized her mistake, she locked Adam in a metal box to be disposed later. But Adam escaped. Unfortunately, his mother, who was then pregnant with his sister, was captured along with his father. The witch murdered them both; the mother disposed of later after she had the baby.

Adam spends the rest of his life recovering from his ordeal and then decides to do something about it. He intends to do away with the witch, find his sister, and find out what happened to his parents.

With the help of a powerful clairvoyant, Adam hires Darci T. Monroe, a girl of, seemingly, no consequence with an air of innocence and naivety about her. But she isn't what she seems, for Darci has a very powerful psychic ability that will help Adam get rid of the witch and unravel the mystery to his parents' deaths.

I'm not sure I liked this book. The plot line was a bit far-fetched and not very believable. However, Darci is a fun character and it's hard not to like her. But there is a childishness about her that can grate on your nerves.

I'm a big fan of Ms Deveraux and despite this how weak this story is it won't dampen my enthusiasm for her works.

4 out of 5 stars first and best of the trilogy.......2006-07-19

An enjoyable easy read.
the highlight of this book is Darci. What a wacky, fun, and unusual character.
Her adversarial relationship with Adam, is a bit Hepburn/Tracy like. We know they are attracted to each other right away. But it takes a bit of sparring before they realize it.
Paranormal aspects in this novel are at times lighthearted and at times frightening.
There are some seriously dark themes, kidnapping, torture, but they are written about in such a way, they don't get too dark.
She would have leaned into the horror genre if she placed to much focus in that direction.
The ending seems a bit rushed.
All in all a good read.

1 out of 5 stars very disapointed.......2005-07-07

I bought this book as a replacement for a book I'd borrowed from a friend and my cat had chewed the corners on.This book was listed in "exellent" condition. It was in much worse condition than the one my cat chewed on.So as I went out to buy yet another copy of the book,I knew I'd learned a valuable lesson about trusting internet shopping.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Love it, but I feel like I'm getting ripped off.......2007-02-03

I love the Simpsons and these books are a "must have" for any serious fan. Plot summaries, gags, quotes, movie references, song lyrics, and "the stuff you may have missed" are all great. As I am rewatching the seasons on DVD, I love to pull out these books and refer along.

However, I am a little irritated at how much I feel Groening and company to be "milking" these books and the consumer for $$$$. The first book contained 8 seasons and was great. Now lately, all three of the subsequent books only cover two seasons? This latest book was released in 2005 at the beginning of the 17th season. Surely they could have made more of an effort to make the book more current and include the 15th and 16th seasons as well.

I'm a little annoyed that it cost me $12 to buy the first book in this series that covered EIGHT seasons, and yet I've had to spend $42 on three books which have only covered SIX.

3 out of 5 stars a little too much.......2006-03-23

These are long!!!! They get kinda boring and i think they just put in the info to fill the book.

5 out of 5 stars The simpsons.......2006-02-27

This book is perfect for any simpsons fan. You can follow the entire show with this book. The funnest part is reading along as you watch the particular show, and find the little stuff the book puts out

4 out of 5 stars Great Show, Good Book.......2005-11-06

This book is probably a must for any real "Simpsons" fan. It is full of summaries of each episode in the 13th and 14th season, as well as memorable quotes, interesting trivia, and things you may have missed. The book offers interesting character designs from different episodes, as well as on-going couch gags and what Homer likes ("Mmmm") and dislikes ("D'oh"). However, I feel some of these things are just placed inside to make the book seem more full and deserving of $15. But, overall, I was very happy with the purchase and, as I stated earlier, I feel it is an essential for a big "Simpsons" fan.

Book Description

On an evening like any other, nine-year-old Katie Mackey, daughter of the most affluent family in a small town on the plains of Indiana, sets out on her bicycle to return some library books.

This simple act is at the heart of The Bright Forever, a suspenseful, deeply affecting novel about the choices people make that change their lives forever. Keeping fact, speculation, and contradiction playing off one another as the details unfold, author Lee Martin creates a fast-paced story that is as gripping as it is richly human. His beautiful, clear-eyed prose builds to an extremely nuanced portrayal of the complicated give and take among people struggling to maintain their humanity in the shadow of a loss.

Reminiscent of books such as The Little Friend and The Lovely Bones, but most memorable for its own perceptions and power, The Bright Forever is a compelling and emotional tale about the human need to know even the hardest truth.

“With what consummate skill Lee Martin conjures up a small town in the grip of tragedy and how deftly he explores the way in which a casual remark, a brief kiss, a white lie can have the most terrible consequences. The Bright Forever is a remarkable and almost unbearably suspenseful novel.” —Margot Livesey, author of Banishing Verona and Eva Moves the Furniture

“Lee Martin’s The Bright Forever goes deep into the mystery of being alive on this earth. Written in the clearest prose, working back and forth over its complex story, and told in the dark, desperate, vivid voices of its various speakers, it holds you spellbound to the end, to its final, sad revelations.” —Kent Haruf, author of Eventide and Plainsong

“Like Winesburg, Ohio, The Bright Forever captures, in alternating voices, the individual acts of desperation that lead to a community’s sorrow. And, like Sherwood Anderson, Lee Martin is not happy to let guilt reside singularly or simply. This is a morally complex quilt, a page-turner that also insists on the reader’s participation in moral contemplation.” —Antonya Nelson, author of Female Trouble and Talking in Bed

“I read The Bright Forever in one sitting. I couldn’t put it down. Part Mystic River, part Winesburg, Ohio, this harrowing and beautiful book is one of the most powerful novels I’ve read in years and heralds the breakout of a remarkable talent.” —Bret Lott, author of A Song I Knew by Heart and Jewel

“The Bright Forever will get under your skin with its exquisite psychology and fine-tuned suspense. Lee Martin has created a world of aching beauty and terrible loss.” —Jean Thompson, author of City Boy and Wide Blue Yonder

“The Bright Forever is ravishing. . . . Lee Martin’s characters, dear readers, are us—riven and bedeviled, our souls gone grainy and rank, our hearts busted and beating heavily for love. We have Martin to thank for having the moral courage—yes, an old-fashioned but rare virtue—to tell it to us plain.” —Lee K. Abbott, author of Living After Midnight

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good.....as a Whodunnit!.......2007-08-26

This book kept me compelled due to the mystery lover in me. Although the subject matter is tragic, you just wanted to know what happened to Katie! I have to say this book seemed more of a thriller than anything to me, I was constantly wondering who did it?? Who was lying?? Who was hiding something?? I actually got scared thinking there are peoeple like Mr. Dees and Ray in this world. I felt there were some loose ends at the end of the book, but, this book is good for a rainy day and it's a quick read. However, I do feel the author could have gone the extra length and really strengthened this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great read!.......2007-08-14

Couldn't put it down! Multi-character voiced, in a who-done-it, is filled with suspense, drama, and a look at small town USA in the 70's. You will want to be part or Katie's disappearance!

4 out of 5 stars Very similar to "The Lovely Bones".......2007-07-17

On an ordinary summer evening in the early 1970s, 9-year-old Katie Mackey disappears on the way to the library. In this small Indiana town where everyone knew everyone, and no one bothered to lock their doors, the possibility of not being safe rocked the entire community.

Thirty years later, a number of individuals related to the case take turns narrating the events that took place that summer. Henry Dees, the odd reclusive schoolteacher who tutored Katie in math; Raymond R. Wright, the friendly construction worker who earned the town's contempt and suspicion when he married a widow so soon after her husband's death; Katie's older brother Gilley, 17 at the time of her death; and others set the tone, giving readers a glimpse at their lives that particular summer, at the town's secrets, lying just beneath the veneers of seemingly dull and ordinary citizens, and the effects that the disappearance of one small girl can have upon an entire town.

This book is incredibly similar to Alice Sebold's "The Lovely Bones," except for the fact that Katie herself is never narrator, like Susie. Still, I wouldn't let that stop anyone from reading it -- this is a wonderfully written, poignant story that is bound to stay in a reader's mind for quite some time.

4 out of 5 stars Well done.......2007-03-19

This is the story of a nine year old girl who goes missing after leaving home to return her library books one summer night.

Lee Martin tells this story in a very interesting way. Incorporated with the traditional narrative are four different perspectives from people who are connected to the story. We hear their experiences directly from them in their own distinct voices. One of the characters, Mr. Dees, speaks directly to the reader. Their experiences are overlapping, they do not fit together like the pieces of a puzzle, and each one colors our perception of the truth. One of the character makes us question their version of the truth.

I thought it was a very well written story, the characters were well developed the story was believable and the essence of the era was captured.

5 out of 5 stars Transports you back to the 70's...........2007-03-11

Katie Mackey is one of those bright rainbow children; charismatic, brave and shiny at the age of 9, her disappearance shocks a small town in Indiana and reveals suspicions and social inequities in the foundation. Katie, on her bike, was returning library books and never came home. Her parents are the town's wealthiest couple, the objects of envy, and then of pity. In Martin's writing, you can capture how people felt the day of the disappearance; the smell, the feel, the taste of that day--in many ways the end of their innocence.

Told from five points of view, the tale is unique in that Martin speaks with a clear and recognizable voice from each of his narrators, not just one style disguised in 5 characters. Martin draws us in, leaving us to question the motivation of each of the narrators; Katie's older brother, her tutor, a misfit couple where the wife was a widow who remarried too soon and her husband is a grifter who strikes an inharmonious chord in the small town. A third person narrator helps to stir the pot.

Shame and sadness intermingle as each narrator asks the audience to have patience while the tale is drawn out. Finally, vengeance takes over, followed by emptiness. What the small town was becomes invisible and lost in what it has now become. Martin's elegant writing propels the tale, and first one, and then another conclusion is drawn.

A short, compelling read; you'll remember "The Bright Forever" for a long time after you put the book down.
