Neale Donald Walsch's Conversations with God series has enjoyed boundless success, making his dialogue with God accessible to a worldwide audience of adults. The Little Soul and the Sun distills the essential message of the Conversations with God books and sews it into a story that even children can identify with. Frank Riccio's poignant illustrations are the perfect companion to Walsch's parable of a little soul who discovers that it is "the light" but still wants to know how it "feels" to be the light. This proves to be a problem, as God created nothing else but the light. God's solution, with the help of another soul, is to surround the little soul with darkness, so that it can feel what being the light is like. This deceptively simple tale of self-discovery carries such a profound message that adults as well as children will read it over and over, each time learning a little more about who we really are and why we are here on earth. --Brian Patterson

Book Description

This is a dramatic and orchestrated companion to the childrens book "The Little Soul and the Sun", by Neale Donald Walsch, author of "Conversations With God". The story is narrated by the author and performed by a cast of characters. The performance is brought to life with a rich orchestral underscore and special effects, and includes four songs which reinforce the story's profound messages. The story is followed by an inspirational orchestral reprise and Overture.

5 out of 5 stars Spiritual - Little Soul.......2007-09-02

I LOVE THIS BOOK! It may look like it is just a children's book - not so.
This book is especially meant for all of us to read. I have given it to many friends and they all have called to thank me for introducing them to this wonderful book. In addition to being a great book for kids, most adults will find the messages to be very meaningful to them as well. It changed my way of looking at a lot of things and helped to heal some long lasting wounds. I read it at least once a month and am moved to tears every time. I highly recommend this book for kids of all ages ---- especially adults. It will open your mind to the light and change your life forever.

I am glad i got this book for my little girl and I cant wait until she starts understanding it. She is only 5 months but I couldn't wait. BUY IT, You wont regret!

5 out of 5 stars Good Story and Great Pictures!.......2007-07-06

This is really good book for children as well as those who are reading the conversations with God as I am. The story will help children to realize why some bad things happen and how they can always look for the positives in the bad. I know that I will read this book alot and to my siblings. Some kids might find some things alittle confusing, but I would just keep reading and explaining it to them. The books that Neale has produced can do nothing but help people. I think this book is great and every school should have it. The only problem i have is that the book is kinda pricey. I just bought it for 17 dollars at barnes and noble and on amazon is twelve something, but then theres the shipping cost so then its still around 17. Anyway, it's an awesome book with great pictures.

5 out of 5 stars Seeing Beyond Offense.......2007-06-07

I read this book almost every day for a month. This increased my compassion for myself and others. I started seeing new perspectives on people who seemed bullying or offensive previously--I now see a new part of them that perhaps they have forgotten. And, I see how their "offense" is perfectly orchestrated for my growth! In fact, in one case, it was obvious to me that my "offender" was simply repeating something my own ruthess inner critic had been saying so that I could hear how ludicrous it was and laugh it away!

5 out of 5 stars again- I'd give it 10 STARS!.......2007-03-23

Absolute perfection!
Great book and my 3 year old daughter wants to read it over and over! We also have the CD she can listen to. I believe you can by it on amazon, if not, contact the author himself...its even more powerful and my daughter loves listenning to it on her CD player in the car. Especially long trips!
A MUST to have together with the "Little soul and the Earth- I am somebody!"

    Book Description

When a charming polar bear cub climbs into bed one night, she asks her Mama a very important question--one that little "human cubs" often wonder about, too: "Where did I come from?"

As Mama bear tucks her youngest cub under the quilts, she gently, tenderly, and reassuringly communicates the message loving parents everywhere (bears and non-bears alike) want their little ones to hear: "We wanted you very, very much, and we are so very glad because--"God gave us you."

Perfect for bedtime, naptime, storytime or anytime, God Gave Us You provides a valuable opportunity to build children's self-esteem every day and assure each one that he or she truly is a welcomed, precious, and treasured gift from the Lord.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book Ever!!.......2007-09-22

This is the BEST BEST BEST book in my opinion. Each page describes how the mama bear and daddy bear wanted a family, and they waited, and her belly grew bigger and they prayed each night for a healty baby, etc.. It's just such a great book. Each page ends with the phrase, "God Gave Us You!" When I read this book to my baby I point up her tummy to her nose each time I saw the 'God Gave us You' part and she always smiles.

I've read the reviews and I'm wondering--is this book appropriate for an adoptive family? My kids were adopted from China, and I know God gave them to us. Is this book specific to birth parents and the birth experience? Thanks for sharing.

    5 out of 5 stars A Precious Book.......2007-05-30

This book was right on the mark! It expressed exactly what my husband and I were feeling during our pregnancy and delivery of our daughter. Reading the book made me cry. The story is very special to me. Now, I give it to all my friends that become new parents as a gift!

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not the best.......2007-08-24

The story is interesting, but developed too fast. The new Thanos is not so cool than the "real one". The new penciler increases the confusion and the changes of placement of the action are a mess. It is not the best book of UFF.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing Change of Direction for the Ultimate FF.......2007-07-30

This volume introduces the new creative team of Mike Carey and Pasqual Ferry. Although I've enjoyed much of Carey's work ("X-Men," "Lucifer"), the storyline here introduces new characters at breakneck speed and ends up as a confusing mess. Also, what began as a more realistic take on the Fantastic Four mythos has devolved here into cheese on a cosmic scale. Pasqual Ferry's artwork looks like animation cells from a television cartoon--a big change of pace from previous artists such as Jae Lee. This book might appeal to younger fans of Marvel's "Adventures" line of comics, but definitely lost my interest.

3 out of 5 stars A low point in the series.......2007-06-30

It's been a good run with the Ultimate Fantastic Four, but volume seven of the collected series, "God War," takes a stumble.

Despite the appearance of writer Mike Carey at the helm, this book suffers from an overabundance of new characters and new situations that leave a reader feeling both overwhelmed and underwhelmed at the same time -- which is a pretty neat trick, when you think about it. Overwhelming is the sheer number of new characters that are thrown at Our Heroes in an overused plot twist wherein strangers are mistaken as foes and pummeled. Who are these people? Where are they from, and what are their powers? Why is everyone fighting?? By the time the UFF is transported to another dimension and even more potential foes are dumped into the equation, I'd stopped caring -- I was underwhelmed by the lack of real excitement and empathy for these new folks in funny outfits. Sure, it all boils down to the introduction of cosmic archvillain Thanos into the Ultimate world, but by that point I was already yearning for something else to read.

    by Tom Knapp, Rambles.(n e t) editor

3 out of 5 stars Not the best storyline they've ever done.......2007-05-08

I was pretty disappointed with this collection. The plot and characters are so convoluted that half the time I had no idea what was going on.
I'm hoping this is just a temporary setback. I'm a huge fan of the Ultimate series, and I've enjoyed the Fantastic Four since it has started. They have proven that they are fully capable of terrific stories (Super skrull and the zombie storylines are some of my favorites), so I'm hoping they go back to that level of quality.

5 out of 5 stars Great way to start a conversation about Christianity.......2007-05-29

If you are a youth or young adult and you are looking for a light book to pass on to a non Christian (or wavering Christian) friend, this is it. It's also a good book for any Christian who likes a good read. The writing style is unique and often humorous. It reads like journal entries so don't expect perfect grammer (complete sentences). I only say this because the only one star rating mentions this. If you check his profile, you will notice many of his reviews are negative though so I don't know how trustworthy a reviewer he is for the under 30 crowd. I, however, work with youth group at church, lead the young adults ministry, am an adolescent counselor, and am actually under 30. Therefore, I think I have a pretty good grip on what this age group likes. I have many friends who have read this book (ages 16-27) and not one of them has disliked it. I think that says a lot. It makes you think, and gives you the opportunity to discuss your faith with others in an open and honest way. Isn't that all that really matters in the end?

5 out of 5 stars GOD, brilliant Lord, yours is a household name........2007-04-27

"Let the knowledge of His transcendence bring us back to life. Let it flow like blood to sleeping limbs, and feel them tingle as they awake in awe. Shake life back into your legs and let them carry you running with wind and thunder. Shake life back into your chest and let your heart beat in pounding reverence. Let praise come face to the ground, trembling with life an awareness that we are found by a holy God."
    - pg. 70, on Psalm 29

This book for me was absolutely breathtaking. In it, Crowder uses the ancient practice of "Lectio Divina", which he later explains. This method consists of reading Scripture not to try and pull things out of it, but rather slowly reading through a passage of Scripture, chewing it up, and just being quiet and meditating on what you just heard. Breathe it in slowly, absorb the perfume of God's Word, let it settle in on you. Then, after some time, when settled, write your own response.

Crowder examines 21 different Psalms from the Old Testament (starting w/ Ps. 1 and ending w/ Ps. 150) in Lectio Divina style. In each of these very short chapters, he starts by writing the Psalm for the reader. All Psalms are taken from Eugene Peterson's "The Message Remix". This was for me reading these 21 Psalms in a new light than ever before. And the view was breathtaking. (I'm buying a Psalm book in "The Message" now, because I was so taken aback.)

After the Psalm, the reader will find Crowder's own "lectio divina" on that Psalm. Crowder is an extremely unique writer and an amazing communicator. I have included a quote from his Psalm 29 "lectio divina" at the top of the post. Crowder will start off talking about something in his life that seems totally unrelated to the Psalm itself; meeting Richard Simmons, taking up photography, his childhood desire for a nickname, going to the bathroom, his own short term memory, the childhood bully, all kinds of stuff. But by within the next few pages he's turned it around into something grand, something magnificent, a breathtaking view of the Psalm. He discusses individual and corporate worship, the name of Yahweh, the transcendence of our God, His amazing love, his vast creativity, hope in the midst of despair, God's glory, and on and on.

In the beginning of the book, Crowder discusses that his purpose is to help the reader understand the "praise habit". How, just like a little kid finding a toy who can't help but hold it up triumphantly and show the world his new prise, praise for our God should flow forth uninterrupted from our lives. How we find God in the pew at church, in the Bible at home, and in a chicken sandwich at Arby's. God is here among His people.

In this book you will laugh out loud at Crowder's humor, raise your eyebrows at his unexplainable (self-admitted) quirkiness, and wonder at his truly amazing ability to communicate the God of the universe to the human soul.

Does a nun have to decide what to wear in the morning? No, she just puts on her habit... day in, and day out. And so should we, our Praise Habit, until it becomes "habit"ual.

On the back cover is a reference to Psalm 64:10; "... Good-hearted people, make praise your habit." There's a brief, three paragraph synopsis of the book, starting out, "Praise is something we are, not something we do." This first of Crowder's books is, on the back cover, recommended by Donald Miller ("Blue Like Jazz", "To Own A Dragon", "Through Painted Desserts") and Brian McLaren (pastor, author of "A New Kind of Christian", voice for the today's emergent church).

I recommend this book as one of the best you'll ever read. I would also encourage you to check out his second book, "Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven, but Nobody Wants to Die, or (The Eschatology of Bluegrass)".

    5 out of 5 stars praiseworthy!.......2007-03-09

i bought this book and everybody wants to go to heaven.. at the same time, this is my fave by far. it's one of those books you know you'll read over and over. in fact, i have to re-buy it because i gave it to my pal for her birthday! it's very easy to read, very personal, i like the personal recollections that david included. i would definitely recommend this book.

    4 out of 5 stars For a casual fan, a good read.......2007-01-18

David Crowder tackles the topic of praise in a very readable and interesting manner in 'Praise Habit'. THe topic of worship and how verbal, sung praise fits into worship, and whether or not it is a fluffy or necessary part of Christianity is a hot topic, and Crowder makes a strong argument for singing praise to be a part of our lifestyle, that we have to glorify God the way religious wear their habit--it has to be a visible sign of our commitment to Christ.

The only thing I didn't like about this book was that about half of it was just psalms with reflections, and Crowder uses "The Message: Remix" translation, which I can't stand. This is probably just a personal dislike, and the rest of the book is great.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable devotional if a little flat in spots........2006-12-15

Praise Habit by David A. Crowder is a nice devotional about finding God in everyday places where we don't normally look for him. Crowder does a terrific job of reminding us why it's so important to praise God in all things. Each chapter starts with a Psalm from The Message Bible. The language is very modern; it can occasionally be off-putting, but for the most part brings new depth to the verses. After the Psalm, Crowder gives the reader a short anecdote, usually humorous, about events in his own life. Where the book stumbles is in the connecting of the Psalms to these stories. Sometimes it works, other times it doesn't. I didn't connect with this book the way that I like to with a devotional, but it was still an enjoyable read.

Children of God is the sequel to Mary Doria Russell's 1996 The Sparrow, which saw a Jesuit mission to the planet Rakhat end in disaster. The sole survivor of that mission, a priest named Emilio Sandoz, returned a beaten and broken man, having suffered rape and mutilation at the hands of enigmatic aliens. Now the Jesuits want to go back to Rakhat, and they want Sandoz aboard the new mission. But Sandoz has renounced his priesthood and even found a measure of happiness with his new wife and stepdaughter. Meanwhile, on Rakhat, contact with the humans has thrown the local culture into turmoil, precipitating a war between Rakhat's two sentient races. As forces conspire to send Emilio back to Rakhat--and toward a possible reconciliation with God--the planet verges on genocidal destruction. Children of God is a more polished novel than The Sparrow, and the story is equally compelling.

    Book Description

Mary Doria Russell's debut novel, The Sparrow, took us on a journey to a distant planet and into the center of the human soul. A critically acclaimed bestseller, The Sparrow was chosen as one of Entertainment Weekly's Ten Best Books of the Year, a finalist for the Book-of-the-Month Club's First Fiction Prize and the winner of the James M. Tiptree Memorial Award. Now, in Children of God, Russell further establishes herself as one of the most innovative, entertaining and philosophically provocative novelists writing today.

The only member of the original mission to the planet Rakhat to return to Earth, Father Emilio Sandoz has barely begun to recover from his ordeal when the So-ciety of Jesus calls upon him for help in preparing for another mission to Alpha Centauri. Despite his objections and fear, he cannot escape his past or the future.

Old friends, new discoveries and difficult questions await Emilio as he struggles for inner peace and understanding in a moral universe whose boundaries now extend beyond the solar system and whose future lies with children born in a faraway place.

Strikingly original, richly plotted, replete with memorable characters and filled with humanity and humor, Chil-dren of God is an unforgettable and uplifting novel that is a potent successor to The Sparrow and a startlingly imaginative adventure for newcomers to Mary Doria Russell's special literary magic.

This is an amazing story, and so unique. The language the author uses is surprising and somehow perfect. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys literature for the sake of beautiful story-telling and the power of words.

Unfortunately, this is even worse than the first book, The Sparrow. To be avoided. Insert review of The Sparrow here, as exactly the same applies :-

A bad book by a mundane religiously focused writer trying to be a science fiction writer, and failing, in general. Obvious, tedious, and worse than mediocre. This sort of thing has been handled many times before to considerably better effect. The religious preaching is so overt it causes you to grit your teeth and groan.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Will Blow You Away.......2007-06-14

Two sentient races, one of predators, the other of highly developed herbivores, have lived together for centuries in an uneasy symbiosis until the "foreigners" arrive from Earth. Their well-intentioned intrusion sets in motion cataclysmic change and results in disaster for the crew. Only one of them returns to Earth--Emilio Sandoz--physically and emotionally wrecked. That was the heart of Russell's first novel--The Sparrow. Now, in Children of God, a second expedition is launched, and a reluctant Emilio Sandoz, who is just beginning to find happiness with the woman he loves, is kidnapped and forced to go back.

I can't tell you much about the plot--let's just say that the changes set in motion in the first book have to work themselves out. With three intelligent species, two planets, many languages, and the passing of generations, things could get very complex, but the author manages to keep all her elements under control. A great science fiction story, yes, but much more--the book is an exploration of social systems going through wrenching change; of faith and doubt; of the search for meaning; and of the unsuspected potential that lies within human beings.

Author Russell writes beautifully with unerring sensitivity. Through her story of alien creatures on a distant (but potentially reachable) world, she illumines the height and depth of what it means to be human. The sequel is better than the first book (which was wonderful). This book will simply blow you away. I recommend it highly. Reviewed by Louis N. Gruber.

I loved this book and The Sparrow, which is the first book in this series. The characters live and breathe with humanity and humor. The spellbinding plot is never predictable. It often left me thinking about the nature of faith, the limitations of our understanding and assumptions about individuals and cultures different from our own, and the unforseen impact that our actions may have upon others.

1 out of 5 stars Alien Gang Rape. No, I'm not kidding........2006-07-21

I want to stress that I picked this book up in all innocence. It was in a charity shop, looked like a perfectly normal sci fi book, and I thought "Woo, go for it!"

It turned out that the book is about the Catholic Church sending missionaries to try to convert aliens on other planets. Okay, a little odd, but I can live with that...

...until the proest gets gang-raped by aliens. Graphically. We're not talking human-like aliens here, we're talking repilian alien-aliens. You read and you think "I've got to be miread... NO, NO IT'S REAL, OH GOD!". And honestly, it doesn't get any less disturbing when you learn that it's all down to a misinterpretation of the phrase "priests love everyone".

I'm not sure what's more worrying, that a Google search shows that the author did not write this thing on a dare to show what horrors you can sneak by a publisher but takes it all very seriously or that Wikipedia says they're doing a film adaptation of the first book with Brad Pitt as the priest. Brad Pitt + Alien Gangrape = Scary.

This book is simply the New King James Version of the Holy Bible with a lot of extra's like good study notes, dozens of lesson plans, job aids, teacher training lessons, and other resources. It lives up to its title. I have used it for four years and have shared it with my Christian friends. A must have if you're a Sunday School teacher in a scripturely based church. Also a good tool for Christian Home School teachers.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Resource for teaching kids!.......2006-01-17

This Bible is such a great resource! It's NKJ so it's a literal translation and there are footnotes for all the words kids might not understand. There are lessons throughout it that each present the gospel message in a way that both ties into the lesson and is clear for even very young children. I can't say enough good things about this Bible, even if you don't teach children, it is still an excellent resource. Anyone who has kids in their home or anyone who knows a kid should have this in their library.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent for teens, parents and for people who "grew up Christian"........2007-02-06

For those who grew up in the "culture" of Christianity, this is an excellent book to awaken us to the numbness many of us may currently experience in our relationship with our Creator God. It is written to the adolescent primarily, with short (but relevant and powerful) stories about situations they (and we who are older) may be facing today. This is then followed up with some sound teaching on various subjects, finishing each chapter with some mental checklists for discussion and thought.

For parents, it allows us to have our eyes and ears open to what our children may be experiencing as young people "growing up Christian"--the dangers of knowing all the information, yet not having a heart soft towards the LORD; of becoming conditioned to the voices of Truth and having a wandering eye and ear towards the world and its voice of lies.

This is an excellent book to read with your young adolescent (or pre-teen) to help them realize who they are and where they live currently and to see the pitfalls that potentially lie ahead of them if they choose to walk in the way of this world versus the Way of the LORD.

I've been giving it out to anyone who "grew up Christian" or have children who are "growing up Christian".

This is an excellent resource for high school and college students. It is very thought provoking for any. It would be useful for a Sunday school class as well.

5 out of 5 stars Important Reading for Parents and Teens.......2005-10-13

Growing up Christian is not as easy a task as one might think. There are dangers and temptations unique to growing up within a Christian family and within the church and sadly these difficulties are often downplayed or misunderstood by those who have been converted later in life. Growing Up Christian seeks examine these issues, which, as a person who grew up in a Christian home (ie a "church kid"), are near and dear to my heart. The book is targetted primarily at church kids, though their parents would do well to read the book with them. The author, Karl Graustein, is a church kid himself and is now a principal at a Christian school, so is intimately aware of the issues at stake.

The book is divided into three sections. The first lays out the blessings and the dangers of growing up in a Christian family. "Growing up in a Christian home is a wonderful privilege. We have been given so much: godly parents, training in the Word of God, friends from Christian homes, support from a Christian church community, and most importantly an opportunity to know God at a young age. Throughout our lives, we are repeatedly taught about the love of God, his plan of salvation, ways to recognize and resist sin, and living for the glory of God" (page 21). He goes on to recount other benefits of being raised in a Christian environment, pointing out that while we are given so much we are also protected from so many dangers.

"Church kids face some unique challenges...Though surrounded by the things of God, we can still be drawn to sin and live double lives. We can easily assume that we are saved even if we are not; or we may be driven by a desire to be popular more than a desire to live according to biblical values. While it is a great blessing to grow up in a Christian environment, if we are not careful we can make some dangerous assumptions about ourselves, which have serious consequences" (page 22).

I can testify from my life that I have seen both the privilege and the danger of growing up in a Christian home. I am ever thankful to God that He blessed me with discerning parents who, though they did not understand from their own experience what it is like to be a church kid, were unrelenting in sharing the gospel with us. Their efforts have been blessed as all five of their children know and serve the Lord. But as often as I have seen this type of blessing, I have seen the opposite, where the children of Christians fall away or live lukewarm at best, always assuming but never knowing that they are saved.

The second section teaches kids how to think biblically. Graustein speaks of the importance of cultivating humility, of growing in gratefulness, of loving Scripture and of trusting God. He also covers what I might consider the most important topic in the book: developing personal biblical convictions. On the front cover of the book are the words, "Have you taken ownership of your relationship with God?" Just this weekend I was discussing this topic with my friend Doug and I suggested that this is exactly what the children of Christians need to do. For many years we coast along under the umbrella of our parents' faith. We do what they do and say what they say simply because that is what we have been taught. But there comes a time of crisis and decision. This is a time I remember from my own life. I do not know whether this is the moment I became a Christian or whether that was much earlier, but I do clearly remember the day that God allowed me to make my parents' faith my own. It was a day of transformation in my life. It is a day that I suspect all church kids have at some point.

The final section deals with living biblically and the author discusses battling sin, the spiritual disciplines and stewardship of God-given talents. Much of this section draws upon and is consistent with the excellent teaching ministry of Don Whitney and his book Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life. Other clear influences on the author through this section and others are J.C. Ryle, John Piper, Jerry Bridges and C.J. Mahaney. Graustein is clearly a man who has spent much time in the Word and much time learning from sound teachers.

All-in-all this is a fantastic book and one which I wish I had been able to read while I was a teenager still wrestling with my faith. To echo the endorsement of Tedd Tripp, "Karl Graustein gets it! He understands the pitfalls and dangers that track with the privilege of growing up in a Christian home. He addresses all the standard temptations...This book has a look and feel that young people will appreciate." Growing Up Christian is a book I would unhesitatingly recommend to any and all Christian parents and teens.

This is a bit unusual, but I'd like to make special mention of the person who designed the cover for this book. It is very well done and I suspect this book will sell quite a few copies to those who judge a book by its cover. Well done! If there are awards for this type of thing I hope you receive consideration.
