Great Foundation Excellent Presentation.......2007-07-15
Good bones, that's what this book gave me. It was my first or second and what a good model to imprint on.
Clear, comprehensive, it established good practice that has served me well.
I am apart from it and returned to its words and images in my mind.
If you already know the basics and have an esthetic vision, this may be old news. If you are a beginner, then this should be part of your canon.
The tone, comfortable, practical and the projects are well paced.
It's now old and the field is crowded with both imitators and those reaching beyond this. It remains solid and nourishing. Thank you Helen Clegg for your good thoughts and inspiration.
Wire Jewelry Projects.......2007-03-17
An excellent book for the beginner or intermediate wire jewelry maker. Beautful pictures of the finished piece and step by step instructions including "templates" to compare your wire pieces as you progress.
Wired, wire and more wire.......2007-03-01
This is going to be one that is passed around, copied and talked about for years to come. Yes it is a beginners book, but don't let that stop you from getting this one to add to the shelf near the bench for ready reference. It has nice larger black line drawings showing clear step by step drawing of each move. It doesn't require purchase of a lot of tools, that most will have in the house. The material can be simple electrical wire that you have stripped the covering off to start with. Or leave the palstic covering on for colored work.
The pictures of the finished items are bright and clear. The projects are more for daily wear and some for fancy dress up. You will find the needed info to make any jigs for the component making. I am partial to what they now call Egyptian coils or Celtic twist/coils of copper bare wire.
If you have moved on from simple wire work with only connections made of the wire work. You will find this book a shot in the creative arm. I own this one and enjoy it.
A Must Have for your wirewrapping/jewerly making.......2005-06-06
This is really a must have book for your library of wirewrapping, jewerly making and polymer clay.I really find myself referring to it a lot when I need insperation in beginning new projects..Im not one to follow step by step.but this can be followed very easily, but its good for just adding here and there to what your making.Thats why I like the patterns.Mrs.C
Making Wire Jewelry.......2003-08-15
Younger wire makers will appreciate this book. The patterns are simple and use only wire in repeated designs joined together. The ring section is very simple and is only for someone just starting out in wire. Do not purchase this item if you have any expierence in wire jewelry--only if just starting out.

Book Description
According to Larry Teal, the best method of learning to play the saxophone is to study with a competent teacher. Teal's studies were mostly of instruments other than the saxophone, but as a student at a Chautauqua summer session, he came under the influence of Georges Barrère, the eminent French flutist. He played bass clarinet with the Detroit Symphony, but he continued to be absorbed by the saxoph one. As a result of his acquired expertise and growing reputation, he was appointed to a full-time faculty position as a saxophone teacher by the University of Michigan -- the first ever to receive such an appointment from a major university. During his 21-year
Customer Reviews:
The "Saxophonist's Bible".......2007-10-05
This book is considered by many to be the "Saxophonist's Bible." A great book with many illustrations and practical advice for playing the saxophone.
A must-have book for saxophonists.......2007-09-19
Great book!
I just started learning to play the sax, and this book has given me
an invaluable insight into the instrument and how to play it.
I recommend it to anyone starting to play the saxophone, but the information is valuable even for established and professional players.
The Art of Saxophone Playing.......2007-09-10
I have recently started learning the basics of saxophone playing. My knowledge of playing the Saxophone, and indeed any musical instrument, and also music theory is limited. However I found that the information in "The Art of Saxophone Playing" was very informative and the way it is set out has certainly been of great help.
I think that the more advanced player will profit more from the information given in the later chapters. I'm hoping that as I improve I will better understand these chapters.
Great book.......2007-01-20
This book is a staple among saxophonists of all veins (jazz, classical, and anything else). It is a must-have, and for good reason. It gives insight in to every aspect of being a saxophonist, including some brief but helpful information on doubling. Some chapters are very in depth, though others are less so. A great find and worth every penny.
Just what I needed.......2006-11-10
I played sax when I was in fifth/sixth grade, and have taken it up again, 30++ years later. The book is excellent, and the CDR is a perfect companion piece.

Chop Doctor in print!.......2007-07-12
Jeanne's new book is a delight to trumpeters of all ages. Great information, easy to read, and most of all it comes from a great person! Jeanne is always so willing to help a player in need. I wish I lived closer to her.....

Excellent Resource for All Players.......2007-06-07
Trumpeting by Nature is a book intended for people of all ages and levels so while some information may seem obvious to the more advanced student, the same information is a great help to beginners looking for direction in all aspects of playing. Jeanne's methods are based on the principle that each player is responsible for becoming their own teacher and her book is a guide to doing so. By providing explanations, photographs and exercises to develop the different areas of trumpet playing (embouchure, air, tonguing, etc.) she helps the reader find their unique "sweet spot" where trumpeting becomes as relaxed and efficient as possible.
The characteristic that sets this method apart from the rest is the way problems are addressed. There are no generic instructions such as "use less pressure" but instead, each common pitfall is described in terms of how it affects one's playing. Suggested ways of overcoming these habits are then presented in clear, detailed instructions, making Trumpeting by Nature a great reference for trumpeters at all levels with the desire to diagnose and overcome inconsistencies in their playing.
The one addition that would make this book all the better is a quick-reference insert or appendix that includes a glossary and a diagram of the muscles frequently referred to in the book. However, this oversight is far outweighed by the positive aspects of the book which is why it deserves a five-star rating.
Disappointing.......2007-05-12
This book may be appropriate for a young child, although it was not meant to be so. When I got to the part about rinsing my mouth after eating and before playing, I put the book back in the box and sent it back.
Everything You Wanted To Know About How The Heck To Get a Note Out.......2007-05-04
I have known Jeanne for more than 15 years, as a colleague, teacher and mentor. All I can say is WOW. No review I could possibly squeeze into this space will do Jeanne's book any justice. It's as though she is sitting next to you at your stand, telling how it all works. Most other contemporary material out there is in the form of booklets and such, cost the same or more. This is a complete reference, with illustrations and thorough explanations of how to achieve the optimum set-up for yourself. As a working professional musician, I am always looking for tips on how to make my playing more efficient, more musical, more powerful. Jeanne takes you by the hand (it doesn't matter what level you're on, you will learn a great deal here). The best part is, although this book is quite thorough, it is not some dogmatic, rigid, my-way-or-the-highway approach to playing. Jeanne's approach is a flexible (like one's playing should be) cafeteria-style menu of information, technique, philosophy and encouragement. Many approaches to the trumpet have been written and discussed over the years - Adams, Arnold, Maggio, Vacchiano, Stamp, etc. This is destined to be a classic, and rightfully so. Bravo, Jeanne!
I Wish I Had This 25 Years Ago!.......2007-05-02
For those of us who learned to play the trumpet incorrectly or inefficiently, this book is a revelation. Jeanne is known as the "Chop Doc" because of her vast knowledge and her insistence on anatomically correct setup and development. In this book she breaks down absolutely everything pertaining to the playing of this instrument in easy to understand text and using many visual examples. For the past three years my two sons and I have been privileged to be studying with Jeanne and we can tell you that what is in this book works beyond a shadow of a doubt. This book conveys her love of music, the instrument, and the art of teaching in a concise manor and with her trademark positive and encouraging attitude. I have watched her get kids who could barely blow a middle G, to become members of "The High C Club" simply because she told them that she KNEW that they could do it. This is the next best thing to studying with Jeanne. What is in this book will help you learn to play at your highest level for a lifetime.

The ideal trumpet book for high school, collegiate and advanced trumpet students and teachers. A unique new trumpet method book that reflects the author's 35 years as an educator and his practical use of educational theories. This book describes how you can teach your body to play the trumpet.
Customer Reviews:
Some Good Suggestions.......2007-09-22
I have already learned why I have always had such trouble with high C which is that I've always thought I had to stretch the upper lip of the embouchure(sp?) but instead i should have rested the mouthpiece on the lower lip so as to permit the upper lip to vibrate freely. Now I'll have to see if it works.
An invaluable and different approach.......2006-03-19
This is a really different way of looking at the hard graft involved in playing the trumpet successfully. In this book the emphasis on the physical side of playing does effectively persuade the reader to revisit and develop a systematic physical approach to aspects of playing that are often overlooked in other tutor books, when attempting to improve basic and advanced techniques. The exercises are well explained and sequential and would appear to suit both the intermediate and professional trumpet player.
Clear,logical and very helpful........2006-02-28
This is an excellent book.
It provides a logical and clear approach to learning the trumpet. It has the best explanation I have seen of exactly how sound is produced from a trumpet and how that sound can be improved.
The author's suggestions are straight forward and bring quick results. In my case some issues I had struggled with were finally made clear and I have significantly improved my tone and fluency.
Mr Asper's detailed description of his recommended approach to practice is outstanding, as are the exercises set out in the appendices.
I highly recommend this book.
Every trumpeter should have this book.......2005-06-14
I've seen lots of trumpet books but never anything like this. It transformed my playing instantly just by going to the section on embouchure. I must admit I was a bit sceptical about what he says in that section - it seemed counter-intuitive to me - but I tried it and it just unlocked the door for me. I began playing with an effortlessness that I had never known before. Mr Asper has a great ability to make you UNDERSTAND what you're doing. If you're serious about improving, I rate this a "must have".
A great book for the complete beginner!.......2003-01-25
As an adult (late 30s) I have only been learning the trumpet a month, and I found this book to be a huge help. Easy to read, helpful information and clear diagrams enabled me to get a better sense of what I am trying to achieve; and although the book itself states that it is designed for intermediate to advanced players, I would recommend it to the the complete novice too.
Although not a cheap book for readers down under (give the exchange rate and postage etc) it is definitely well worth the money, and a great reference book to be pick up again and again.

Music Theory for Guitarists: Everything You Ever Wanted to Know But Were Afraid to Ask
ASIN: 0786668660 |
Product Description
Renowned Berklee College of Music faculty guitarist Jon Finn, combines his experience, education, and stylistic versatility in this eclectic series of lessons for aspiring rock guitarists. Jon's innovative approach is unique, fun, and challenging. The book/CD set and DVD both offer a well researched original take on the use of pentatonic scales in rock improvisation. Using his "Warp Refraction Principle" which takes into account the major third tuning interval between the second and third strings, Jon presents a series of five vertical patterns applied in two-string increments throughout the fretboard. The philosophy behind this project is to present concepts and techniques as a thought process rather than simply providing a reference manual.
Customer Reviews:
THE BEST.......2007-10-06
Hands down this is the best method ever in breaking down the scale patterns and learning to master the fingerboard.
If your shakey on your scales or simply have trouble moving from postion to postion this book will show you the light.
Even if your quite comfortable with your scales you'll learn to see things in a new light. You'll be breaking old ruts and treading new territory after some serious study.
Even after all that you'll learn some new ways to use some old tricks like say, "Pentatonic Scales".
Jon Finn is a Master Teacher.
This is the Standard all Method Books Should Aspire to but few do. This was quite obviously written by someone who cares and someone with a strong desire to teach.
BTW He's a killer Guitar Player as Well.
Excellent Book. Deeper into the pentatonics........2007-03-30
The pentatonics are absolutely essential for rock, blues/rock guitar. If you already know the 5 patterns of the major and minor pentatonic scale then this book would further increase your playing abilities.
This book takes the 5 patterns (boxes) of the pentatonic scale and dissects them. He illustrates a very intelligent way to use patterns derived from the pentatonics. The result is you can break out of the patterns that you usually play and expand your playing anywhere on the neck in any key.
amazing.......2007-02-10
Wow, this book and DVD (not so much the cd for me) is really amazing, even for a beginner guitarist this put my soloing way above what i could do, 10x what i was able to do in 30 mins ago. I have tried many guitar methods and they all say the same thing and i was still confused about how to solo like my favorite guitarist and this book and dvd solved a lot for me, i also like it because its personal and funny, its not your standard how to learn ____ book. everything in here worked like a charm for me on the first try and blew my mind because of the simplicity. if your interested in actually playing nice melodies with your guitar and not just knowing theory about how guitar is played ( like other books), this is for you. this guy summed up in 2 mins what i have been trying to do for 3 weeks with my guitar teacher.
Feel You are Stuck??? Get this book!!!.......2007-02-06
Living here in Boston has given me the opportunity to study with great Berklee Professors (Tomo Fujita & Don Lappin)... never Jon though. He's too busy. I've seen Jon play in pretty small bars here in Boston and always asked myself how he does it. This book explains it all.
This book is great for guitar players who are stuck in one position. I've been there and this book summarizes the fretboard geometry very well. Jon explains his approach to moving up and down the neck without being stuck in one position. It all makes sense.
It comes with a CD and DVD. Great Book, Great Player, Very Inspiring!!!
See your fretboard in a totally new way.......2006-06-17
I just started going through this book, and it has changed the way I look at my fretboard. I don't know much about music theory, but this book explains things in a simple way that I could understand immediately. I highly recommend this book.

Book Description
From the Philip K. Dick Awardnominated author of Cowl, an adrenaline-powered new SF adventure: Brass Man. Neal Asher returns to his trademark Polity future setting in this sequel to Gridlinked, which SFRevu.com called brilliant and audacious work, chock-full of cutting-edge ideas. Ian Cormac, a legendary Earth Central Security agent, the James Bond of a wealthy future, is hunting an interstellar dragon, little knowing that, far away, his competition has resurrected a horrific killing machine named Mr. Crane to assist in a similar hunt, encompassing whole star systems. Mr. Crane, an insane, indestructible, artificial man now in a new metal body, seeks to escape a bloody past he can neither forget nor truly remember. And he is on a collision course with Ian Cormac.
Customer Reviews:
I read this one first.......2007-08-13
At times it was slow going because characters fleshed out in previous novels of the series are introduced here with no explanation. However, I thought it was an excellent sci fi read, up there with novels like Starship Troopers, Ender's Game, Forever War, et. all. Tons of stuff going on, great prose style, very cool characters and engrossing good v evil plot. Highly recomended.
at last, fantastically applied science of fiction.......2007-03-27
+1 for bone-crunching non-stop airport loung action
+1 for sizzling wit - especially the Cervantes characters
+1 for total mastery of his plot-line and weaving it all together
+1 for bettering Ian M Banks, Peter F Hamilton and Alastair Reynolds
-1 to the publisher for NOT making clear on sleeve this was #3 in series
Bottom line: best thing to happen to Brit SciFi in light years! B
Pretty boring. Mostly crap........2007-03-20
Superheroes escaping impossible situations. Villains dreaming up new threats. Existing threats constantly working to get enough energy to become dangerous. SSDD. Pretty boring.
If not for the errant knight, this wouldn't have been worth reading.
Dragged-out end of a series.......2007-02-15
First of all, if you haven't read the rest of the "Gridlinked" series, don't bother, this novel will be utterly incomprehensible to you. Most of the major plot points are set up in earlier books, and all (ALL) of the characterization of the major characters is set up in earlier books, leading them to drag around in this book like so many paper mache' characters. The new characters are drawn well, but it's assumed you already know the old characters, so they're just shoved around like chess pieces.
Neal Asher has written a lot of good stuff, but this one is, at best, merely readable. Buy it only if you've read the previous books in the Gridlinked series and want to see how he ties up all the lagging plot points. Sorry, Neal!
bleak brutal futuristic science fiction landscape.......2007-01-28
Schizoid when he controls his impulses; psychopathic as his norm, the maniacal Golem Mr. Crane is an insane killing cyborg machine brought back from the abyss by the deranged Skellor who combines the most amoral human artificial intelligence with the ancient alien Jain bio-technology. Earth Central fears that the Jain destroyed other races and probably itself with their WMD technology so they worry that the lethal Mr. Crane is reported back this time as a more powerful BRASS MAN. Thus top agent Ian Cormac is recalled from dragon hunting to lead an expedition of mostly throwaway AIs whose objectives are to destroy Skellor and eradicate the Jain technology.
At about the same time on Cull, Anderson a half-breed Rondure Knight battles the Dragon at the same time Skellor seeks to ally with this Dragon who apparently can safely use Jain technology that is already inside him. As Mr. Crane, his puppeteer Skeller, Cormac, Anderson and Dragon head towards a supernova collision, some of Ian's AIs who reject the notion of being disposable pawns are considering joining the enemy.
BRASS MAN, the sequel to the wild GRIDLINKED, is as feral and violent as its predecessor as Neal Asher paints a forbidding dark distant future where violence is as civilized as apple pie in spite of great affluence. Through flashbacks and current events, the two prime rivals, Mr. Crane and Cormac, are fully developed as they head towards a high celestial noon collision with the booty being Dragon. Not easy to read, this novel paints a bleak brutal futuristic science fiction landscape.

Book Description
We all have fond memories of a favorite dessert our grandmother or mother used to bake. It’s these dishes that give us comfort in times of stress, help us celebrate special occasions, and remind us of the person who used to bake for us those many years ago.
In Heirloom Baking, Marilynn Brass and Sheila Brass preserve and update 150 of these beloved desserts. The recipes are taken from their vast collection of antique manuscript cookbooks, handwritten recipes passed down through the generations that they’ve amassed over twenty years. The recipes range from the late 1800s to today, and come from a variety of ethnicities and regions. The book features such down-home and delicious recipes as Brandied Raisin Teacakes, Cuban Flan, Cranberry-Orange Cream Scones, Chattanooga Chocolate Peanut Butter Bars, and many more. Accompanying the recipes are stories from the lives of the families from which they came.
The Brass Sisters have taken care to update every recipe for today’s modern kitchens. More than 150 photographs showcase the scrumptious food in full-color detail. Finally, the Brass sisters encourage each reader to begin collecting his or her own family recipes in the lined pages and envelope at the back of the book.

baking and heirloom!.......2007-08-01
I love to read cookbooks, and rarely buy baking books, but this was given to me and it is one of my favorite cookbooks. I like the older recipes, and their changes, and the stories behind them -- the recipes have all been wonderful, even for a non-baker like me --
a delight on all counts.......2007-07-24
"Heirloom Baking" is a treasure. It is just the kind of cookbook I really enjoy. The photos are gorgeous, the overall design of the book is appealing, nearly every recipe is one I'd like to bake (or have someone else bake so I could EAT it!), the Brass sisters are charming and the history and anecdotal information is a pleasure to read. This book gets space on my shelf for sure!
Heirloom Baking.......2007-07-04
Excellent cookbook. Lots of good pictures and very interesting recipes from all kinds of places. Anybody that likes to cook would love this cookbook.
very nice bakingbook.......2007-06-13
I like this book a lot. The recipes are good and delicious. Its lay-out is very pretty with lots of pictures (not of all the recipes). If you think of bread when you read the word 'baking', there are hardly any breadrecipes in this book, so don't buy it for breadrecipes. There are nice stories about the origin of the recipes.
It's not always easy to find a recipe (lets say for a cookie), because the different baking products are all over the place. I think a list of baking products by sort (cakes, cookies, puddings, pies, etc) would have made it a lot easier to find your way in this book. The index indicates that (p.e.) cake is to be found on page 40,42,96, 116 etc etc, without stating what kind of cake to expect on that page, so you'll have to look up all those pages to choose the cake you like. This is a shame for otherwise it's a very lovely book and recommendable for the recipes and it's good looks.
A cookbook lovers dream come true!.......2007-05-13
A friend of mine brought this book to work for the staff to browse through and all of us ended up buying a copy! The entire format is terrific, lots of old favorites, and the pictures!!...you'll drool from page one to the very end. My favorite are the little bits of information(some very original recipes on the paper they were written on years ago) included for each recipe and section..very heartwarming.
Some of these desserts we have all had at one time in our life...a real trip down Memory Lane and a great compilation of old recipes for the younger generation too.

Customer Reviews:
easy to use.......2007-05-16
My father, who is 70, was delighted to get this book. He's had a harmonica for years, and has actually started playing again. He says he should be able to use this book easily.
Tonja Taylor, author of LEGACY: Crafting Your Child's Future With Words
Useful book.......2007-03-20
This approach is the best I've seen for teaching harmonica, especially to those with no prior music education.
Wonderful product.......2007-01-19
My son just received a harmonica for Christmas - he is a law student at LSU - I bought him the book so that he could learn to play - he stated that the book was easy to follow and moved quickly - he loves it! It was shipped promptly and in excellent shape - thanks!
one of the better harmonica songbooks.......2006-07-17
good product for the price; I memorized 2 of the tunes in it already, and I can easily follow a few more or the advanced ones in the book. contains some recognizable favorites; the authors system/tablatuure is easy to follow
Quite Good for Beginners.......2006-03-01
No real advanced harmonica lessons in this little book, but the price is right and it a good start for the harp beginner. Also going for it, the book has a lot of songs set in simple harmonica notation.

Book Description
This monumental and unique study fills a serious gap in existing literature and traces the history of British military music from its early beginnings to the sophisticated instrumentation of today. This volume, with accompanying CD of their regimental marches, covers the Infantry and disbanded Irish Regiments.
Customer Reviews:
Classic of its Kind.......2007-02-07
This was the 3rd and final volume of this remarkable series. With the demise of so many fine old regimental bands from the British army, Gordon Turner with help from Kneller Hall, the army school of music, attempted to chronicle the fascinating history of these bands. Included are many fine photos, past and present. Extensive band histories are referenced throughout, with listings of bandmasters and directors of music, as well as regimental music played, and just general info. of importance. Many fine, rich stories are to be found here. The emphasis of this volume was on the bands of the Light Division and the Irish Regiments. Many others are included as well. All have colorful histories included with many references to bands and units long gone from the British army list. Included is a special CD played by the Band of the Royal Signals Corps which includes many of the regimental music listed in this work. The cover is a recent picture of the Band of the Light Division, now a single 47 piece band. All that remains of the bands of the Royal Green Jackets and Light Infantry. Soon this band will be changed yet again as the recent cuts will reduce it to a staff band of just 35. The title will be changed to the Band of the Rifles. A bland sounding title for sure! A sad loss for the many fans of this band over the years. This is niche book, highly recommended for those into military music, and British regimental bands in particular.
