Book Description
This stunning first novel, set in colonial Rhodesia during the 1960s, centers on the coming of age of a teenage girl, Tambu, and her relationship with her British-educated cousin Nyasha. Tambu, who yearns to be free of the constraints of her rural village, especially the circumscribed lives of the women, thinks her dreams have come true when her wealthy uncle offers to sponsor her education. But she soon learns that the education she receives at his mission school comes with a price. At the school she meets the worldly and rebellious Nyasha, who is chafing under her father's authority. Raised in England, Nyasha is so much a stranger among her own people that she can no longer speak her native language. Tambu can only watch as her cousin, caught between two cultures, pays the full cost of alienation.

Two very intelligent Shona girls lapse into cynicism and disappointment upon realizing that an elite education is not a panacea.......2006-08-28
This novel is loosely autobiographical and takes place in the 60's and 70's in colonial Zimbabwe, then called Rhodesia. Tambu is a young girl from a very poor rural family. She is forced to live in the shadow of her favored older brother. Tambu begs her lazy sexist father to be able to attend school like her older brother but he feels she should stay home and learn to cook. Tambu is determined and goes to great lengths to earn the money to pay her school fees. She hits pay dirt when her jerk brother, who has taunted her and rubbed his privilege position in her face, suddenly dies. Tambu gets to attend the mission school in his place. There she teems up with her cousin Nyasha. Nyasha's father is head of the mission school, is the most well educated villager, and real tyrant. Nyasha's family has recently returned from England where her father completed his master's degree. Nyasha is seen as a snob by the locals because she has forgotten the Shona language and dresses like a Brit.
Tambu is very aware of just how "privileged" she is to be her uncle's charity case. As she witnesses her cousin Nyasha's rebelliousness Tambu's feistiness dissipates. Unlike Nyasha Tambu's position is precarious and she decides to survive by keeping quiet and trying her best not to cause any discord. Tambu has a rude awakening as she learns that her elite education sets her apart from her compatriots, but she really doesn't fit into colonial set either. She also must confront the realization that education is not a cure for sexism and racism.
The issues of colonialism, sexism, racism, hypocrisy, and the pros and cons of education are subtly and skillfully examined through the eyes of two teenage Zimbabwean girls. I did a graduate class project on this book. There are a lot of critical commentaries regarding this novel on the Internet. Dangarembga has also written several plays and films. There is another novel by a Zimbabwean author about girls and education called Zenzele by Moraire. Zimbabwe is also having a lot of problems right now, mostly thanks to a lunatic dictator. There are many organizations trying to help. If you want to help do an Internet search for "Zimbabwe, women, and education."
The Burden of Being.......2005-01-23
The troubles and turmoil of life often present us with guiding burdens, mountains that not only seem but are truly impossible to climb, and boundaries put in place to check even the strongest of wills. These mountains, boulders, and impassable rivers serve as a standard, a ceiling and a foundation; created by the society in which we take our very breath. So when we find ourselves stuck in the very system that we create, who can we blame? Who can we turn to for rescuing? These are the very questions that narrator Tambudzai learns to ask in Tsitsi Dangarembga's novel NERVOUS CONDITIONS.
Throughout her young adult life, Tambudzai witnesses many cultural tendencies of her people and struggles internally with what she is being taught versus what she observes and believes to be right. Aside from her Rhodesian homeland being colonized by the British, she also wrestles with getting an education in a country where an education is seen as wasted on women. The role of men over women in this very patriarchal society serves as the backbone of NERVOUS CONDITIONS and operates as a means to compare different women's struggle to survive that cast-iron system. Through Tambudzai's eyes, readers see how her cousin Nyasha rebels against her father - the family leader, proclaimed prince, and headmaster of the school at the Mission. Readers see the difference between Tambudzai's subservient mother and her mother's defiant sister. We also see how this society treats a woman just as educated as her husband. Following Tambudzai as she progresses towards higher learning and gains a deeper understanding of the world that surrounds her, literary audiences discover just how suffocating it is to deal with the burdens of simply surviving.
Many themes course through NERVOUS CONDITIONS making it an excellent novel for discussion and evaluation. Aside from the obvious men/women theme, a few other issues in the novel are the dangers and benefits of colonization, the necessity of education, and Christianity vs. traditional African religions. I also liked the importance of food and the role it played throughout the novel, especially at the end with Nyasha's rebellion. Exceptionally written, Dangarembga's novel, although about the learning period during a young teenager's life, is not child's play. This is a very adult novel filled with mature situations and intellectual food for meditation. The characters are well developed and the author takes time to draw scenes for her audience. You can see the poverty when she shows it to you just as well as you can see the surplus when it exists. Never have I read a novel that so intensely and effectively relays the burdens some people bear up under to simply be.

Thoroughly Riveting.......2004-12-08
I read this book for the first time when I was in Zimbabwe for an upper level African Literature class and thought I would die! As a young African woman I can totally relate to everything that Nyasha went through and having relatives like Tambu I foud her character completely believable. I have heard from a person who knew the author and her dad that the book is based on her life...don't quote me on this. But in that case it is even more impressive. I totally disagree with people namely one who said the book was flat and inconsistent. Things like this actually do happen and people do actually live their lives like this and this is Tsitsi's take on these issues and hers alone. I don't know, I could go on and on. I have read this book 7 times and have gotten some of my really good friends to read it just so they understand me and my culture. I might suggest we read it for my book club.
Decent.......2004-06-16
I would say that it is somewhere between 3 and 4 stars, but I'll just give it 3. I liked the ending, which I found haunting and riveting. As for the rest of the book...sometimes it just moved slowly in a boring way - like an endless cloud or blanket. Even after finishing the book, I still felt like I didn't know Tambudzai as a character because it seems that she is always naive and confused, and following behind in the footsteps of someone else - in this case, Nyasha. Tsitsi Dangarembga has talent, no doubt, but there is room for improvement.
Don't miss this read!!.......2003-12-16
This book by TsiTsi Dangarembga is a powerful book. You will find yourself hating and loving characters as they travel through their life in Zimbabwe. This book takes place in the 1960's were we can see the results of colonization. We see the changes that occurred among the poor people in Rhodesia and how they had to cope with changes in their culture, family life and the education, which their people lacked. We see how powerful religion was and how people can become puppets and lose sight of their culture and family values. Your emotions will pull you to pieces as you take this trip with Tambu (the main character of the book) as she struggles with her rural life and how she "awakens" as she gets older to the times that are changing around her. You see her grow not only as a child to an adolescent but you also see her grow intellectually to see how her culture is changing. You see her and her cousin Nyasha struggle with their identities as they wonder if they belong with the changing times that have educated them or with the people that they grew up with. You start to have sympathy for them as you realize they have no real place anymore. This book will show you the good things that come out of colonialism and the horrible things that can occur when you play with people's lives. This book will show you how powerful racism is and how people who don't conform are left out in the cold (literally). If you read this book I promise you will not regret it.

Customer Reviews:
Thank you Dr. Swank and John Pageler.......2007-09-06
5 Years ago, I was diagnosed with MS. I was not willing to give my life over to the pharmaceutical companies of the world, nor shut off my immune system, or give up my active lifestyle. I saw a Naturopath, who told me about the Swank diet, and I read a fabulous book by John Pageler called NEW HOPE REAL HELP FOR PEOPLE WITH MS (no longer in print, but availabe on his website). In his book, John talks about how the Swank diet kept him healthy, upright and mobile for 40+ years with the dis-ease. So, I bought the book.
I credit Dr. Swank and John Pageler and my Naturopath Dr. Paterson with being the backbone of my healthy a-symptomatic life! Everyone with MS should read this book. It helps more than you can realize. I only wish I could convince more people (who are on the drugs) to try it!
Interesting but dated.......2007-07-29
I read this book and found that the information was historically correct but much of the information was outdated. My husband has MS and while reading the material, I disagreed often with the information presented. We will still try the diet, because with this disease we will try any diet that claims to work. Over half of the book is recipes and outdated graphs.
in remission, thanks to Dr Swank.......2007-07-07
I started the diet (very strictly) 4 years ago, right after being diagnosed with MS. I said 'no thanks' to the interferon drugs the neurologists wanted me to take. I haven't suffered any new exacerbations since, I can even say I feel better than ever before (this is a most healthy diet) and would go on eating this way even if they found a cure. Because there is no cure for MS (yet) and Dr Swank never suggests that the diet he advocates is a cure, he merely states it will slow down progression (which is also what the drugs claim). It's not about money either, as you can find the guidelines to the diet for free online: [..]
The medical community (at least part of it, because Dr Swank is a neurologist himself) claims the diet has never been proven to work, but the main reason for this is that it is impossible to conduct a double blind placebo test on a diet (you cannot give fake fat free food to a group of people and hope they will not notice). While the diet is the fruit of extensive and well documented research. A great companion read is Dr George Jelinek's Taking Control of Multiple Sclerosis (more up to date and confirming Dr Swank's conclusions).
So, if you have MS, like me, give the diet a try (but don't expect to notice a difference over a couple of days, give it some months), in the worst case it won't help your MS condition (though it helped mine and that of many other people), but it won't cost you a penny, it is healthy and has no side effects.
It's your body, don't leave it all to the pharmaceutical industry to take care of it.
The Multiple Sclerosis Diet Book.......2007-06-27
this is a comprehensive book that gives the reader a deeper understanding of what is happening to the body and how to minimize exacerbations of the symptoms. This diet would be extremely difficult for anyone who is not already comfortable with a diet consisiting of low-fat foods, fresh fruits and vegetables, and minimal amount of dairy.
Thank you Dr.Swank!.......2007-05-15
Dr Swank's MS Diet Book has been a God send! It's informative, constructive.....I treat it like a bible! Would recommend it to all MS patients! Thank you Dr. Swank!

Book Description
Sometimes called the “miracle diet,” the ketogenic diet has helped doctors treat difficult-to-control epileptic seizures in thousands of children. Coauthored by two respected Johns Hopkins neurologists, The Ketogenic Diet continues to be the definitive guide for parents, physicians, and dieticians wanting to implement this strict diet. This fourth edition is extensively updated to reflect current advances in understanding how the diet works, how it should be used, and the future role of the diet as a treatment. The best-seller also includes sample meal plans, a food database, a section on how the Atkins and modified ketogenic diet can be used as alternative diets to control epilepsy, and much more.
Customer Reviews:
Thought provoking information.......2007-03-25
I'm interested in unusual therapies, and know someone who has a child with multiple disabilities including a seizure disorder. I found a videotape about this diet at a rummage sale a few years ago, and while it makes the diet sound relatively simple, this book says otherwise and goes into detail about people who are good candidates for the diet and those who are not. Many testimonials and case studies are presented as well.
The woman I know was given this option and said, "We don't want to starve our child." After reading this book, I can see where she was coming from. The restricted calories don't concern me as much as the fluid restriction, which could potentially be very dangerous and the book addresses this problem as well.
For the proper person, this diet could potentially be a lifesaver and it's worth trying if all factors are appropriate.
The Ketogenic Diet 4th Edition 2007.......2007-03-20
This book contains up to date information in relation to the ketogenic diet and other seizure control options that is also easy to read and understand by non professional people.
Very highly recommended as a top alternative to medication for kids with epilepsy........2007-02-08
If you have or know a child with epilepsy, THE KETOGENIC DIET: A TREATMENT FOR CHILDREN AND OTHERS WITH EPILEPSY is a 'must' for your consideration: it offers a solution beyond medication which provides a doctor-supervised diet high in fat and low in carbs and proteins, which limits calories - and is proven to control seizures. There've been many advances in the field, so this updated 4th edition is essential even for library holdings with prior editions. Besides the latest research, this book includes a new section on the Atkins diet and other alternative nutritional therapies. Very highly recommended as a top alternative to medication for kids with epilepsy.

Book Description
'The Ketogenic Diet' is a complete resource for anyone interested in low-carbohydrate diets (such as the Atkins Diet, Protein Power, Bodyopus or the Anabolic Diet). It looks objectively at the physiology behind such diets, including potential negative effects, and gives specific recommendations on how to optimize such a diet assuming an individual has chosen to do one. Two modified ketogenic diets (which involve the insertion of carbohydrates to sustain exercise performance) are also discussed in detail, along with specific guidelines. Exercise is discussed in great detail, including background physiology, the effects of exercise on fat loss, exercise guidelines and sample workouts. A great deal of basic physiology information, dealing with both nutrition and exercise topics, is included so that readers without a technical background will be able to understand the topics discussed.
Customer Reviews:
A very thorough resource.......2007-07-05
This book is a remarkably thorough resource on low-carb dieting and its variants as applicable to those working towards a high level of fitness. By that I mean bodybuilders and other athletes. The rest of us are addressed and educated to a great degree with this book, as well.
The ketogenic diet as explained here is for those who can execute a plan with a high level of independence. There are no food lists, menus, recipes, or pep talk. Just the facts and the methods. There are workout routines, but there are no illustrations or explanations of the exercises. It is assumed that the reader already knows what, say, a deadlift is. If you can assemble the nuts and bolts for yourself, you'll have no need to examine any other low-carb approach (Atkins, South Beach, Protein Power) at length. You'll want the food lists and maybe recipes from such books, however. If you want the all-in-one deal with all that information, I believe the author recommends Protein Power by Drs. Eades.
It bears repeating: it is a very thorough and robust read with an academic tone. If you're interested in the nitty-gritty ins and outs spelling out the rationale of doing such a diet, it's here.
The approaches are in three flavors:
Standard ketogenic- eating low-carb all the time while doing nothing more than, say, walking for exercise
Targeted ketogenic- low-carb eating except before and after weight training only
Cyclical ketogenic- a few days of eating low-carb followed by a couple of days with higher carbs-rinse and repeat
For what it's worth-this book needs some editing, both in text and layout. Enough to notice, not enough to miss the message.
Strongly recommended for the purest of intentions, for those that can.
Precise and exhaustive.......2007-07-02
McDonald is a true scientist who has produced a wonderfully thorough and well-researched book.
The "true scientist" tag is important, for at least four reasons:
(1) This book contains no hype, pep talks, or unduly biased recommendations. It's also not a feel-good "collaborative" book that works with the reader to set goals; it assumes that readers will set, or have already set, QUANTITATIVE goals.
(2) It expects readers to comprehend, and think in terms of, QUANTITATIVE concepts like grams/%/calories of macronutrients, lbs/% of LBM, etc.
(3) It contains no recipes, convenience tips, or lifestyle advice, unless absolutely vital to the program (as with timing of workouts/carb-up in the CKD).
(4) Its text is concise, scientific, and QUANTITATIVE, and therefore rather dry.
If you're looking for an easy-to-read diet book that could potentially sell millions of copies in the aisles of grocery stores, look elsewhere. If you want a thorough volume with exact, QUANTITATIVE factual data, as well as honest discussion of the current state of knowledge regarding various aspects of the diet, this is the book for you.
Did I mention "quantitative"?
The Ketogenic Diet - Dieter & Practitioner.......2007-03-20
This is a very indepth book which describes in great detail the process by which the ketogenic diet occurs and how this impacts different individuals. It is very technical, yet extremely informative.
Temporary.......2006-04-02
"You should also read www.c-k-d.com, particularly the forums."
The people over there generally do not like Lyle, due to the fact that he is not a product of his philosophy whatsoever - google him.
I tried this diet and it worked...to a point. I couldn't perform my work outs because I was so drained all the time. As soon as I resumed normal eating I gained back all the weight I had lost. Then, I just went crazy over carbohydrates for awhile and put on more weight than before, although some of it was muscle (which isn't too bad) since I continued working out. However, I'm still never as lean as I was BEFORE the Ketogenic Diet (I didn't do the CKD), and I was on Tom Venuto's Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle (e-book).
The Ketogenic Diet.......2006-03-14
The best resource you can find for this type diet. Actually, I do not consider it a diet but a way of life now. It is not hard to follow. All my questions were answered in this book, and some I did't even know I had.

Superb Book on Nutrition for Arthritis.......2007-05-17
This is an outstanding, substantive, and well-researched book on nutrition for arthritis. Dr. Bucci has done a wonderful job of amassing all the science on nutrition for arthritis, and I highly recommend this book for anyone who suffers from arthritis and wants to use optimal nutrition as an adjunctive approach. As a researcher and nutritionist, let me tell you that following the advice in this book will be helpful as long as you: 1. Use very high quality supplements and 2. Give your nutrition program at least three months to work. Healing the joints takes time!

OK--but not so great for older onset alzheimers.......2007-04-20
My mother is nearly 90. She's just beginning to develop Alzheimer's. This book would be good for those whose loved ones develop Alzheimer's at an earlier age, but I didn't find it very helpful.
36 Hours.......2007-01-25
Have not finidhed thid publication but have covered approz 125 pages. The info conveyed is excellent and has caused me to modify my approach to my wifs's condition. Unfortunately she has several other probems that complicate the situation. Rgardless this bookis vey helpful so far and I expect the balance to be the same.
Excellent Resource.......2006-12-02
Many books have been written about Alzheimer's disease. However this book gives the reader an easy to understand yet thorough explanation of what a family or caregiver should do when someone (s)he loves or works for has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.
Susan Berg is the author of "Adorable Photographs of Our Baby, Meaningful Mind Stimulating, Activities and More for the Memory Challenged, Their Loved Ones and Involved Professionals".
Alzheimers Early Stages.......2005-09-17
A really informative book that points you in the right direction as far as finances, estate planning etc. I would recommend this book to family members who are caring for someone with this condition.
a godsend.......2005-06-07
I know my family is going to benefit so much from this book. It has what we are looking for -- all types of basic information, about the disease itself and practical caregiving information, presented in a very calming manner. We are in the tricky situation of the affected family member's refusal to go to a doctor, so we don't even have a professional as a guide through this situation....not yet anyway. It is great to have Mr. Kuhn's experience and depth of knowledge, in an easy-to-read and comprehensive guide.

Enticing.......2007-01-09
Not the depth of some of Dr. DaDamo's major books but very adequate for someone with Arthritis. From here, someone, if interested, can dig deeper if they feel their arthritis was helped.

Book Description
1973 marked the end of the 1960s and the birth of a new cultural sensibility. A year of shattering political crisis, 1973 was defined by defeat in Vietnam, Roe v. Wade, the oil crisis and the Watergate hearings. It was also a year of remarkable creative ferment. From landmark movies such as The Exorcist, Mean Streets, and American Graffiti to seminal books such as Fear of Flying and Gravity’s Rainbow, from the proto-punk band the New York Dolls to the first ever reality TV show, The American Family, the cultural artifacts of the year reveal a nation in the middle of a serious identity crisis. 1973 Nervous Breakdown offers a fever chart of a year of uncertainty and change, a year in which post-war prosperity crumbled and modernism gave way to postmodernism in a lively and revelatory analysis of one of the most important periods in the second half of the 20th century.

Rambling and Misdirected.......2006-12-31
1973 was a seminal year in US history, and Andreas Killen (City College of New York history professor), correctly identifies it as such in his book. Some of the more interesting sections of his book deal with the end of the war in Vietnam and the return of the POWs, Watergate, and the legitimate questions about Nixon's psychological health. He includes a lot of seemingly adulatory material on Andy Warhol and the transvestite punk-rock culture. In a boring and overlong chapter, Killen spends a great deal of time ruminating about how important the Loud family was in their TV show, The American Family. Killen's writing style is strained throughout the book, and his sentence structure is overly complex and sometimes disjointed.
I felt Prof. Killen should have heavily edited the sections on The American Family and the drug hazed Warholites. In wallowing about the forgotten movies of the midseventies and breathlessly praising the Hollywood directors of that year, he overstates the importance of these entertainers and seems to think they were cataclysmic contributors to US history. This sort of attitude is embraced today by the People magazine culture, uninterested in reading anything more than a caption under a celebrity's photograph. Instead of giggling about the New York Dolls, where's a mention of Led Zeppelin or Dark Side of the Moon (which came out that year)?
In getting caught up in how wonderful American Graffiti and Francis Ford Coppola are, Killen grossly under-represents or fails to mention Roe v. Wade, the downing of Libyan Airlines Flight 114, Nixon's visit to China, the showdown at Wounded Knee, the founding (and reasons for the founding) of the DEA, the conclusion of the Thalidomide class action suit, the Houston Mass Murders, the Saturday Night Massacre, and the APA's belated removal of homosexuality from the DSM. What was happening in the art world at that time, or in classical music?
Prof. Killen's main idea was right--1973 was an important year, and maybe it did represent the death of the Sixties and the birth of a neurotic, conspiracy-minded era in modern US history. However, he overemphasizes the above-mentioned subjects and too narrowly defines the important events of that year.
I laughed out loud and I learned some things.......2006-06-09
I really enjoyed this book! After years of thinking about the 1970's as political and cultural deadweight, I was surprised to discover how significant the 1970's were in shaping our current social and political landscape. I was captivated by the ways that Killen wove together seemingly disparate events and themes. His writing is both smart and accessible. I laughed out loud and I learned some things, which is strong praise in my book. I highly recommend this book and I can't wait for the sequel. 1984 anyone?
