I purchased this guide as a bithday gift for my son, who is extremely into playing Nintendo DS games.
He had already purchased Nintendo's DS Animal Crossing game and had played it numerous times, and one night I curiously decided to try it out.
Well, anyway's after spending a few hours of trying to figure out the game. I decided an Official Nintendo Animal Crossing Player's Guide would make an awesome Birthday gift......for him".

Now I don't usually buy guides for games, in fact, this one is the only guide I have for games anyway, not to mention, animal crossing WW is a very hard game to master, It includes 11 pages of cool designs ideas and details of how to draw them, a complete item list (with pictures of the items) a furniture series list that has a list of all the furniture series (like lovely, kiddie, modern ect...) with a pictures of all the items and what the room looks like when the series is completed, a special character list of all the special characters and when to find them, a neighbor list of all the neighbors that could move into your town, and each profile has there personality, picture of them, and their tag phrase. a HRA (happy room academy) guide that shows how to score big with the HRA, a bug list, show when and where to find all the bugs, a fish guide, showing when and where to find all the fish, a fossil guide, showing all the fossils that can be found, a clothing list, showing all the shirts/hats/glasses/helmets that can be found and where to find them, and again, a item list showing all the items and where to get them.
a Gyriod list, showing pictures and names of every single gyriod.
a "Quick bell guide" of easy ways of getting big bells, and showing all the house upgrades and how to find them. a "friendship guide" of how to get neighbors to like you, that might even result in the neighbor giving you a picture of them that you can put in your house!
and a "Starter guide" for people who just got the game and the guide basically walks you through you beggining of the game, so you don't get frustrated
Overall,
The guide has a little one for everyone, rather your in the start or middle or even think you know everything, it is helpfull to have,
in layout it gets a: 9/10
in information it gets a: 10/10
and in durabillty of the actually book, it gets a: 8 and a half/10
P.S.
This is a great guide to get with the game!

I bought this guide for my girlfriend, and she has used it intensively for over a month now. Some game-items has been hard to find or get, and this guide has helped her a lot and made her very happy. To be honest, it's more like an encyclopedia than a guide, but overall it has a nice design and pages full of every little detail you've ever wanted to know about the strange, quirky and funny Animal Crossing world. If you like to visit Animal Crossing every day, this guide will make your Wild World experience so much better.

Book Description

Famed interior designer Vicente Wolf is known for a modern and elegant design sensibility that is guided by integrity and simplicity. He is also a photographer of note, capturing images of his own design work and of his travels. Crossing Boundaries is a fascinating combination of the two, a spirited approach that pairs travel and design based on visits to Ethiopia, Myanmar, Syria, Madagascar, and Borneo.

Wolf is an adventurous voyager, and he is captivated by how people express themselves: in the colors and patterns of clothing, the forms and features of architecture, and so on. These influences are incorporated into his own designs, sometimes directly-a collection of brightly colored woven caps that add personality to a Wyoming log cabin-and sometimes indirectly-a composition of gray-blues and gray-greens drawn from succulent plants in a dry riverbed.

I regret that i have bought this book! It does not show anything special and the objetcive of the author of showing misery people and then show glamorous spaces is a shame!!!!

4 out of 5 stars crossing boundries: A Global Vision of Design.......2007-07-31

This book with it's exciting interior pictures captures interior design at it's best. Mr Wolf's incorpration of ethnic items makes these interiors personal and interesting. His use of color and his inclusion of Benjamin Moore color numbers is a nice feature. I very much like this book and his style. I am an interior designer also and I'm not easily impressed by most other designers work.

5 out of 5 stars great experience.......2007-06-27

mr wolf in his travels search for inspirations in the most unusual places: ethiopia, burma, syria - most of times acquiring local handcrafted items which he will use in his decorations. Although his palette is a bit neutral, with pastel colors most of times, his interiors are extremely beautiful, with subdued elegance and charm. Interesting is how he manages to mix the objects from his travels, with modern furniture, mirrors in abondance and white walls.

5 out of 5 stars Fully Flavored and a Visual Indulgence.......2007-06-26

This book takes us to various locations throughout the world where color, shape, texture, and design from various enthic cultures are integrated in modern design. The chapters are divided geographically and the first part of each chapter reveals the colors, flavors, textures, and ambience of that ethnic area's particular characteristics. Then in the second part of the chapter, the author integrates those influences into the modern westernized home showing exactly how and what he chose to influence his designs. He takes us on a journey throughout the world and we get an inside peak into how he thinks and rationalizes his ideas while mixing with the local culture. This book has loads of eye candy photos. I gave it a FIVE star rating because of the beautiful layout and richness of the photos and for the intimate writing that Vincent Wolf gives from his experience. However, personally I give it a four because, for my own personal preferences, I would have loved to see more of these ethnic influences and colors embellished more in the modern designs he created. I think he toned it down too much in the final results of his designs - but thats just my opinion. The rooms and spacial relationships of the rooms feel very real instead of "propped" like so many design books. This book makes an excellent resource book or a wonderful coffee table book for everyone's enjoyment.

5 out of 5 stars Educatuinal and totally beautiful!.......2007-05-28

This book is not only a joy to look at it is a valuable tool in learning the design secrets of a master.

Book Description

The attacks of September 11, 2001 were accomplished through an amazing orchestration of logistics and personnel. Crossing the Rubicon discovers and identifies key suspects - finding some of them in the highest echelons of American government - by showing how they acted in concert to guarantee that the attacks produced the desired result.

Crossing the Rubicon is unique not only for its case-breaking examination of 9/11, but for the breadth and depth of its world picture - an interdisciplinary analysis of petroleum, geopolitics, narco-traffic, intelligence and militarism - without which 9/11 cannot be understood.

The US manufacturing sector has been mostly replaced by speculation on financial data whose underlying economic reality is a dark secret. Hundreds of billions of dollars in laundered drug money flow through Wall Street each year from opium and coca fields maintained by CIA-sponsored warlords and US-backed covert paramilitary violence. America's global dominance depends on a continually turning mill of guns, drugs, oil and money. Oil and natural gas - the fuels that make economic growth possible - are subsidized by American military force and foreign lending.

In reality, 9/11 and the resulting "War on Terror" are parts of a massive authoritarian response to an emerging economic crisis of unprecedented scale. Peak Oil - the beginning of the end for our industrial civilization - is driving the elites of American power to implement unthinkably draconian measures of repression, warfare and population control. Crossing the Rubicon is more than a story. It is a map of the perilous terrain through which, together and alone, we are all now making our way.

5 out of 5 stars A must read!.......2007-08-05

A timely revelation of facts and events that the lamestream media has conveniently omitted. Much of what we hear in the news makes no sense in the backdrop of what we see from the misleading perpectives of the "right " or left" , but this book explains the process behind much of what is going on. Being aware of the government's role in 9/11as described by Ruppert and watching the constant consolidation of power by the administration enables one to predict with some certainty the future: decreasing oil supplies not meeting population demands, resource wars (the imminent Iranian attack) to maintain our lifestyle, massive population declines as oil-based food production drops dramatically, and the imposition of martial law over an increasingly pacified Congress and "terror-conditioned" population.

4 out of 5 stars Good, yet I'm not totally convinced.......2007-06-28

There is an overwhelming amount of more than just circumstantial evidence here that our goverment aided the 9-11 attacks. As for peak oil being the prime motive, I don't know, if that were the case, wouldn't the world have unraveled even more by now? In any case, it was also entertaining, not your father's conspiracy theory. If Thomas Malthus, Stephen King, Tom Clancy, and Oliver Stone got together to write a book, this would be the result.

5 out of 5 stars Wake up - be alert - question.......2007-06-19

Riveting, provoking and disturbing are the three adjectives for Crossing the Rubicon. It is a page turner, filled with fascinating details about 9/11, the CIA and our government. Surely, for the truth seeker, this book is captivating.

Be alert, sober and a critical thinker. Be willing to question all that you learned...for things are not as they appear...or what we have been indoctrinated to believe.

Read the book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent analysis of the evidence available .......2007-06-12

This is a well done researched book that taps into the Official 9/11 Commission Report myth. Who was behind 9/11, what prompted it, and what was the purpose and consequences for the US political process. The books delineates in detail the CIA's involvement with the drug trade and arming foreign guerillas to meet their own needs and their involvement with events leading up to 9/11 along with the FBI, Military Industrial Complex, and Wall St. This detective journalism at its best. If you ever wanted to know what and who was REALLY behind 9/11, I highly recommend this book. It is quite extensive with lots of hard factual information. If you are looking for stats like the guy below, this is not for you. Instead, the book acts like a "connect the dots puzzle" that flows consistently throughout the book. I think this will seriously change how you view the US political and governmental system.

5 out of 5 stars There should be a million more books like this on the shelves........2007-06-12

This books absolutely blew me away. I don't even know what else to say.

Ruppert argues his case in the book as if presenting to jury. The only defense to the book's logical conclusion is that Cheney and Co. weren't cross examined; but since the Administration refused at all cost the 9/11 Commission's establishment and their own sworn testimony before it, that's about all the proof we need of their treason.

READ THE BOOK. Read the 9/11 commission report, and then Whiteout (by Cockburn and St. Clair) and every other expose of CIA drug dealing and covert terrorism in alliance with Nazis and neo-Nazis...I mean, neo-conservatives. You'll be convinced, if you can handle it that is.

4 out of 5 stars This book will not get you there.......2001-12-10

This book is written as the product of an Institute of Medicine initiative to reduce the mortality and morbidity from errors in the American healthcare system. The Institute of Medicine is a private organization created by congressional charter to advise the federal government on specific matters. Their mission statement is to "advance and disseminate knowledge to improve human health." This book is the final report of the Committee on the Quality of Health Care in America. Their homepage is available by searching the Internet using the full committee name. Membership of the committee and sponsors of the project are available at that web site.

The format of the book is to present evidence for quality problems in healthcare in America and make recommendations. The operational definition of quality used in the book is "The degree to which health care services for individuals and populations increase the likelihood of desired health outcomes and are consistent with current professional knowledge." There are thirteen recommendations presented initially and are discussed in relevant chapters. The recommendations vary in scope from suggesting that multiple parties need to be committed to quality as a way to decrease the burden of disease to suggestions that specific agencies fund pilot studies to look at how reimbursement can be aligned with quality. Six major parameters are discussed as guiding quality and it is suggested that 15 specific conditions be a focus for improving quality.

There is no difficulty in identifying literature studies that demonstrate quality problems in hospital and clinical populations. A survey of current research is included in Appendix A. A review of the tables in this appendix show the types of quality markers that are typically studied in the literature. The authors make the argument that errors due to quality lapses or deficiencies need to be actively worked on and that the current high error rates are not acceptable. Health care has become a major political issue and the political factions are shaping up to be government and business on one side and physicians and other health care providers on the other. There has been a major revamping of the health care system in the past decade to control costs. That required the active cooperation of the insurance industry and government. There is still medical inflation and limited access with 40 million Americans uninsured. Should we believe that another cooperative effort between industry and government will improve quality any more than it has controlled cost or improved access?

The authors acknowledge weaknesses in their suggestions about changing the face of American medicine, but they minimize the adverse impact of the current funding mechanisms for medical care and the issue of information systems integration and security. A good example can be found in their application of engineering principles to clinical settings - - where teams see patients for four hours of direct contact time and the remaining time is for documentation and returning calls. That plan would not be economically feasible in many settings. The high cost and lack of flexibility of the current reimbursement schemes are not mentioned as a potential reason why these plans won't work.

Information technology is seen as a way to enhance both productivity and safety. The authors suggest that e-mail can lead to productive exchanges between physicians and patients. Many physicians have been doing this for years. Many have also stopped with the advent of security concerns about medical privacy. With larger IT systems the critical issue is backward compatability with older systems. That usually requires custom designs that are extremely expensive. Those problems usually need to be solved before bedside computing and decision support can be developed. Security is acknowledged as a problem that needs to be solved. In spite of a federal initiative in this area, the important precedent to remember is how the financial privacy of Americans was protected. The authors point out that medical privacy requirements need to be more stringent than other industries. At the same time they point out that some opinions suggest that there is a trade off between privacy protections and the need to advance information technology in health care. If they are suggesting that the Internet should be at the heart of this infrastructure and the Internet is not secure, what does that mean?

A practical approach might be to focus on the areas where data is entered into computer systems and make sure that non-human analysis occurs at those levels. For example, all hospitals enter pharmacy orders into computer systems. Many hospitals require that physicians write separate discharge orders. Both of these points are areas where there could be immediate improvements in accuracy. A focused study and solution could be engineered now. The necessary software and hardware requirements could be placed on a central web site and available for download by hospital and clinic IT staff. Existing reviewers could be charged with documenting the baseline level of errors and the degree of improvement.

This book succeeds as a broad survey of what has been done about quality in certain settings. It contains some interesting ideas about what can possibly be accomplished by applying conceptual advances from other fields. It does not discuss the significant drawbacks of evidence based medicine. It lacks a practical plan for transitioning to a new system and in effect creates a new chasm. With a work like this, whether you like the conclusions depends a lot on your interpretation of the evidence and your personal experience. As a practicing physician and a previous quality reviewer I have significant areas of disagreement with what is presented in this book. Areas of controversy are not elaborated upon. I suppose you could say that level of analysis is not required, but recommendations about the future of health care in America should at least meet the criteria of "evidence based" and all the evidence should be discussed.

George Dawson, MD

5 out of 5 stars Essential Reading for Everyone in Health Care.......2001-12-02

If you are in anyway involved in health care, this is essential reading. Physicians, hospital administrators, purchasers, health plan execs, and grad students must immediately put this on the top of their reading list. Lives may depend on it.

In it, the highly respected Institute of Medicine builds a powerful case for how the current health care system is severely broken and how it has produced a "chasm" between what we known must be done for patients (based on current science of medicine) and what is actually done. The information conveyed is shocking but true. Even more importantly, the Institute gives us a plan for building a new, more accountable quality-driven approach to health care.

Read it and perhaps you too will be motivated to take action to improve health care delivery in America.

Author Geoffrey Moore makes the case that high-tech products require marketing strategies that differ from those in other industries. His chasm theory describes how high-tech products initially sell well, mainly to a technically literate customer base, but then hit a lull as marketing professionals try to cross the chasm to mainstream buyers. This pattern, says Moore, is unique to the high-tech industry.

Moore suggests remedies for the problem that can help businesses meet their long-term goals. He coaches marketing professionals on how to move slowly through the gulf, teaching them to create profiles and target specific segments of the population rather than trying to plow right into the mainstream. He cites examples of successful chasm crossings by such companies as Apple, Tandem, Oracle, and Sun, showing what they all had in common and exposing the different weaknesses in their strategies. Moore also assigns responsibility for success to programmers and developers by suggesting they design a "whole product model." Here, because integration tasks are daunting to the mainstream market, all the components of a technological product must be in one package. Moore also describes strategies for competing with rival companies and assessing the best distribution channels for penetrating the target market.

Written not just for marketing specialists but for all employees whose futures ride on the success of a technical product, Crossing the Chasm delivers crucial information in an engaging, readable tone.

Book Description

Here is the bestselling guide that created a new game plan for marketing in high-tech industries. Crossing the Chasm has become the bible for bringing cutting-edge products to progressively larger markets. This edition provides new insights into the realities of high-tech marketing, with special emphasis on the Internet. It's essential reading for anyone with a stake in the world's most exciting marketplace.

4 out of 5 stars Crossing the Chasm.......2007-10-04

You can tell that Geoffrey Moore had been overturned by the events of the 90s in that business communication just got a million times quicker. He has updated his contents but they are still lean towards that decade. None-the less they are timeless.

His content is beyond description it is so fantastic - informative and educational. I'm not recommending this book to any of my friends as I want to keep the sharp edge and knowledge to myself - sorry Geoff.

I have put my thinking and business in the fast lane after applying the ideas, which by the way, come with an little analogy that is so simple to follow (read the book to discover his trick) it is a must for every person who has a desire to be head and shoulders above the rest and win.

It beats marketing in the formal sense and offers down to earth ideas that really work. Thanks Geoffrey.

Fans of Geoffrey Moore's Crossing the Chasm and Inside the Tornado will certainly be attracted to The Chasm Companion, a step-by-step manual by longtime Moore associate Paul Wiefels that lays out specific ways to apply his popular tech-oriented business principles in our fast-changing world. But even those who never warmed to the earlier works--which proposed a pragmatic path for successfully navigating the ever-moving environment of "disruptive technologies that force changes in both strategy and behavior"--could find this book appealing. Designing The Chasm Companion as a hands-on field guide, Wiefels opens by explaining six "inflection points" in high-tech market development (the Early Market, the Chasm, the Bowling Alley, the Tornado, Main Street, Total Assimilation) that he and Moore insist everyone must carefully watch and properly react to as internal and external conditions evolve. He then outlines models and tools developed in the consulting practice he co-founded with Moore that enable individual corporations to carefully craft relevant strategies that they can align correctly with the appropriate market phases defined earlier. Finally, he presents initiatives (strategy validation, whole product management, marketing communications planning, and field engagement strategy) to help these firms actually implement their plans. Graphics and sidebars help Wiefels drive his points home clearly. --Howard Rothman

Book Description

In The Chasm Companion, The Chasm Group's Paul Wiefels presents readers with a new analysis of the ideas introduced in bestselling author Geoffrey Moore's classic books, Crossing the Chasm and Inside the Tornado, and focuses on how to translate these ideas into actionable strategy and implementation programs. This step-by-step fieldbook is organized around three major concepts: how high-tech markets develop, creating market development strategy, and executing go-to-market programs based on the strategy.

5 out of 5 stars The Blueprint for High Tech Product Marketers.......2007-02-21

I've been familiar with Geoffrey Moore's work since hearing him speak at a Cisco Systems Partner Summit in 1998. This field book is a must for anyone who wants to understand what to do (and not to do) to successfully market a high-tech product at each stage of the Technology Adoption Life Cycle, and during the Product Life Cycle. Reading this book has helped me better understand how and why we succeeded (and failed when we failed) at my previous company in the tech bubble of the 1990s. The challenge for managers and executives when reading this book is having the courage and fortitude to apply these principles, even when they seem counter-intuitive.

2 out of 5 stars It is good book but..........2007-01-11

After reading the Moore's "Crossing the Chasm", this book really bored me. Maybe the language used in the book is the problem. I am not sure. However, I highly reccommend you to buy Moore's "Crossing the Chasm". It is an excellent book.

2 out of 5 stars Repetitive and could be turned into a leaflet.......2004-11-08

I have read "Crossing the Chasm" and "Inside the tornado" by Moore, both very good books! When I first laid my eyes on this book I had a slight feeling that there might be risk of overlap. I think Wiefelds saw this as well and got a good endorsement by his colleague Moore - to state that this is a complement, not a repetition. That the book was published after the dot-com, in 2002, felt reassuring though - a lot of good lessons were probably to be learned for the reader. Ok, so I had high expectations, but felt a slight doubt.

After reading the book I have two statements:
1. The book delivers some more hands on the two books it referrers to, some really good lists. All in all about nine pages of good ROI-of time material.
2. I am very sad that Wiefelds did not listen to his own good recommendation: don't talk about your product as you know it - know your target group! Wiefelds should know that I am not planning on reading this book for fun - I want a high gain/time-quota, not 352 pages that take a week to read, when a 20 page leaflet would be sufficient! Because the book is repetitive - very!

To summarize:
The book offers some good hands on tips and lists, but should have been a 20 page leaflet.

5 out of 5 stars Extends beyond high tech.......2004-01-24

Wiefels get to the heart of high tech marketing. Nothing I have read has more insights or is more useful in the practical application of marketing constructs for high tech. Anybody in high tech, indeed in marketing of any sort, can benefit from these concepts.

5 out of 5 stars THE guide for tech marketeers and managers.......2003-04-08

It's a very simple and clear framework to keep in mind, with VERY practical results in day-to-day activities of product management (specially for those, like me, come from "techies" backgrounds). It's reccommended to read the other 5 books of Chasm Group to fully understand the concepts, but to start using as product manager, this is THE guide.

5 out of 5 stars best read in an unhurried evening ot two..........2007-08-23

A life changing and life enhancing book. Speaks to the deeper considerations for what our right livelihood is, how it affects others, and how to discover it. I just bought it as a gift to a thoughtful young man considering what to do with his work life - now that he just finished his first job.

5 out of 5 stars A beautifully written guide to soul searching.......2007-01-04

I always enjoy reading Whyte's work. Few writers have equaled his command of the English language and his story-telling ability. The book evokes a great deal of empathy as many modern day workers struggle to find personal meanings to work/employment. Whyte provides a personal insight into how one may purposefully stay true to oneself. The reading is relatively lighter than most of his poetic works and is very enjoyable and thought provoking. If one doesn't like the content, he/she will at least enjoy the author's mastery in writing, especially his transitions from one point to another. Whyte is one of the few authors that can weave together difficult concepts with artistic cohesiveness and elegance. Highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Deep Reflections on 9/11.......2006-09-11

David's work has inspired me in very practical ways and it is truly a read for those who yearn for purpose in their lives. My constant discovery of my "firm persuasion" helps me both at work and at home and dealing with the insanity of 9/11. It is easily one of the top 50 books in my business library and I quote from it regularly when I teach managers and leaders!

Rene Goscinny, Asterix and the Great Crossing (Dargaud, 1975)

Getafix is out of fish, and Unhygenix's shipment has been delayed. You wouldn't think this a problem, with our favorite Gaulish village being on the sea and all, but somehow it is, and Asterix and Obelix are off to the rescue again. Except that while they're out fishing, a storm brews up and sends them halfway around the world to a place where the boars have been replaced by "gobblers" and the Romans wear facepaint. Yes, this is the volume upon which Asterix Conquers America is (very loosely) based. Lots of Indians, some Danish vikings (so Goscinny could play with Hamlet, naturally), and the usual mix of punning and mayhem ensue. Another good one. ***

5 out of 5 stars Asterix in America?.......2007-02-04

In Gaul, Getafix needs fish, it's vital for the magic potion they use to fend off the Romans. Unhygenix the fishmonger hates fresh fish, so Obelix and Asterix go exploring on Geriatrix's boat for some. Where will they go?

"The Great Crossing" (1975) is the 22nd Asterix comic, for Dogmatix it's number 18, and it sees Oumpah Pah (a character from a comic by the same guys) make a guest appearance. I really like this one. It's funny, drawn well. Everything to like about Asterix is here.

4 out of 5 stars Great Asterix album.......2007-02-03

Asterix in America this album could have been called, as a storm leads Asterix and Obelix's ship out to the open ocean, and eventually to the new continent. There they met native americans, there is a clash of cultures at the beginning, but they finally are received as friends. They are finally brought back to Europe by vikings (this was centuries before the real vikings are believed to have reached North America, but one does not read Asterix to learn history). The viking's intention to hold them as slaves will not be successful, of course, as A&O have the magical potion at their side. All in all, a very good album by Asterix.

5 out of 5 stars A great read.......2005-07-08

I won't write a plot summary here, as many people have already done that, but I will say that this is probably one of the best Asterix adventures out there. Parts of it are laugh-out-loud funny, and the artwork is beautiful. If you are new to the series, or are already a fan and haven't read this particular adventure, I highly recommend it. I have read it about a dozen times myself.

Book Description

Six months after the Declaration of Independence, the American Revolution was all but lost. A powerful British force had routed the Americans at New York, occupied three colonies, and advanced within sight of Philadelphia. Yet, as David Hackett Fischer recounts in this riveting history, George Washington--and many other Americans--refused to let the Revolution die. On Christmas night, as a howling nor'easter struck the Delaware Valley, he led his men across the river and attacked the exhausted Hessian garrison at Trenton, killing or capturing nearly a thousand men. A second battle of Trenton followed within days. The Americans held off a counterattack by Lord Cornwallis's best troops, then were almost trapped by the British force. Under cover of night, Washington's men stole behind the enemy and struck them again, defeating a brigade at Princeton. The British were badly shaken. In twelve weeks of winter fighting, their army suffered severe damage, their hold on New Jersey was broken, and their strategy was ruined. Fischer's richly textured narrative reveals the crucial role of contingency in these events. We see how the campaign unfolded in a sequence of difficult choices by many actors, from generals to civilians, on both sides. While British and German forces remained rigid and hierarchical, Americans evolved an open and flexible system that was fundamental to their success. The startling success of Washington and his compatriots not only saved the faltering American Revolution, but helped to give it new meaning.

2 out of 5 stars Where is a ghost writer when you need one?.......2007-08-21

I believe it was easier to cross the Delaware in winter than to get through this book. I just read 1776 by David McCullough, loved it, and was interested in reading more. Fischer is one of the dullest writers I've read. It is painfully obvious that being a successful academic and a successful writer are not necessarily connected.

5 out of 5 stars Top-Notch history from a Top-Notch historian.......2007-06-24

This is probably about as well organized and detailed as any book on a single historical event can get. That it does so without loosing pace or drying out is commendable. While the title may lead one to believe that this book is only about the famous "midnight" crossing, the actual event serves as the centerpiece for the story with the painting by Emanuel Leutze as its starting point. In fact, "Washington's Crossing" deals as much with the events leading up to and afterwards as it does the actual crossing. It is also about more then just the famous crossing with which we are all familiar. Several other Delaware River crossings are detailed including the initial retreat from the ensuing British, the return from the battle of Trenton, and the advance back into New Jersey shortly thereafter. The book is also a detailed biography of George Washington's years just before and into the fist several months of the American Revolution. Appropriately enough this book is also, at times, about the Delaware River itself.

Davis Hackett Fischer deserves five stars on his writing style alone. This book flows like a well written story, which is appropriate in that history is human drama. The book starts with a description and history of the famous painting of Washington crossing the Delaware and then discusses the recent arguments over the painting's accuracy. It seems to have become the fashion lately to debunk this painting over various, some rather trivial details, such as time of day, type of boats used, and even how chunks of ice depicted in the painting, Fischer staunchly defends the painting based on what and who it represents, and most importantly the spirit that is represented. One appreciates Fisher's references throughout this book that American history is not something that needs an apology.

The first three chapters provide a thorough background on all of the major players, the American rebels, the British regulars, and the Hessian mercenaries. Fischer maintains a sense of objectivity in his accounts. Although the acts of rape, pillage, and violence towards the colonies are not ignored, The British and the Hessians are not merely described as the villains of the story just as the Colonials are not by default "good guys." This book is sympathetic to the American cause, but that does not prevent it from describing the people and nations as what they were. One example is General Cornwallis, who is frequently described the pompous and arrogant buffoon who lost the colonies. Fischer however devotes a fair amount of time to Cornwallis's standing in the British military and career as a whole. The depiction is that of an accomplished military career by all standards and that of a person with his own mind who was well respected by all ranks.

The rest of the book can be divided into three sections starting with the seemingly endless series of disasters that the continental army incurred after the British regulars arrived, including the fall of New York, the execution of Nathan Hale, and the loss of Fort Washington, probably the lowest point for George Washington during the entire revolution. The second, as the book's chronology makes its way towards November and December of 1776, deals with the places and events leading up to and including the Battle of Trenton. There is some good history in this section, particularly the river raiding parties out of Pennsylvania that routinely harassed the British encampments along the Delaware River's banks in New Jersey and numerous contributions they made to the attack on Trenton. This section also details Alexander Hamilton's artillery division, one of the few bright spots for Washington's young army. The final section deals with events following the Battle of Trenton, including post celebration war cabinets trying to decide what to do next, the subsequent trip back across the Delaware, and the Battle of Princeton. Again, there are some great gems of history to be found here. Most notably is Fischer's detailing of the lesser known, but probably more important events unofficially known as the Second Battle of Trenton in which Washington's forces held their ground at Assunpink Creek and turned back Cornwallis's larger and superior forces.

Fischer closes the book with a refreshing and necessary summary and conclusion. While the main body of the book completes in fewer than 400 pages, they are dense with information, which leave one feeling that they have actually completed a much longer book. Additionally, there are numerous appendices detailing all sorts of interesting facts and statistics and a section devoted to the Historiography of Washington's Crossing. This is a formidable book, but it is also a top-notch one that should delight fans of History, the American Revolution, and certainly of George Washington. Newcomers to history should probably work their way through a couple of easier books before tacking this one, but they should still consider putting this one on their shelves for future reading.

5 out of 5 stars What can I say that hasn't been said.......2007-06-03

As an avid early American Historian, I place this book in my top three. This is must reading. The facts are told as they were, through the primary characters and you are there during the end of the mini ice age crossing the Delaware. Like MJ's last shot against Utah, if it didn't really happen, we would all just chalk it up to a Hollywood fairytale.

I read McCullough's 1776 after this and there is no comparison.

This book is so vivid and palpable that I felt obligated to go follow the trail of those early warriors. Amazing!

My other two favorites are Chernow's Hamilton and Gotham.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent work .......2007-05-30

Fischer's Washington's Crossing is detailed account of the New Jersey campaign of 1776-1777, specifically focusing on the battles of Trenton and Princetion. Fischer does a great job of showing the differences between the leadership of Washington and Cornwallis and the effects that the battles of Trenton and Princeton had on the soldiers from both sides. While the book does get bogged down in too much detail in some points and not enough in others, this is a great book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-03-20

This is a wonderful book. Now I want to read all of Mr. Fischer's work.

Book Description

Rogues, published in France under the title Voyous, comprises two major lectures that Derrida delivered in 2002 investigating the foundations of the sovereignty of the nation-state. The term “État voyou” is the French equivalent of “rogue state,” and it is this outlaw designation of certain countries by the leading global powers that Derrida rigorously and exhaustively examines.

Derrida examines the history of the concept of sovereignty, engaging with the work of Bodin, Hobbes, Rousseau, Schmitt, and others. Against this background, he delineates his understanding of “democracy to come,” which he distinguishes clearly from any kind of regulating ideal or teleological horizon. The idea that democracy will always remain in the future is not a temporal notion. Rather, the phrase would name the coming of the unforeseeable other, the structure of an event beyond calculation and program. Derrida thus aligns this understanding of democracy with the logic he has worked out elsewhere. But it is not just political philosophy that is brought under deconstructive scrutiny here: Derrida provides unflinching and hard-hitting assessments of current political realities, and these essays are highly engaged with events of the post-9/11 world.
