Since its publication in 1942, The Runaway Bunny has never been out of print. Generations of sleepy children and grateful parents have loved the classics of Margaret Wise Brown and Clement Hurd, including Goodnight Moon. The Runaway Bunny begins with a young bunny who decides to run away: "'If you run away,' said his mother, 'I will run after you. For you are my little bunny.'" And so begins a delightful, imaginary game of chase. No matter how many forms the little bunny takes--a fish in a stream, a crocus in a hidden garden, a rock on a mountain--his steadfast, adoring, protective mother finds a way of retrieving him. The soothing rhythm of the bunny banter--along with the surreal, dream-like pictures--never fail to infuse young readers with a complete sense of security and peace. For any small child who has toyed with the idea of running away or testing the strength of Mom's love, this old favorite will comfort and reassure. (Baby to preschool)

Book Description

Clement Hurd redrew some of his pictures for this new edition of the profoundly comforting story of a bunny's imaginary game of hide-and-seek and the lovingly steadfast mother who finds him every time.

5 out of 5 stars How strong is a mothers love?.......2007-09-18

A sweet tale, that reaches to illustrate that uniquely elusive bond between mother and child. It's just this type of love that promotes meaning and purpose into the lives of our children. A must read! It will surely tug on your heart-strings! Author/Illustrator

5 out of 5 stars profound and solid expression of parental love.......2007-09-12

Enchanting and delightful expression of the devotion of motherhood, and a gentle answer to something every child at one point says they will do "I'm going to run away!" And this is the point.....at some stage children discover and become more deeply aware that they are separate beings from their closest family, and this is both a frightening and inspiring idea. Even today our own political debates on libertarian verses communitarian policies is but this idea write large. And yet in "Runaway Bunny" this idea is not writ small...for the Mother Bunny always replies "if you run away, I will become...." Acknowledging the child's growing ability and independence, but also expressing devotion, attention, and care.

Margaret Wise Brown is an unacknowledged genius of American letters and child psychology and I highly recommend her works, and especially Runaway Bunny.

5 out of 5 stars Must have book for kids!.......2007-08-26

This is a wonderful story for the whole family. My son loved this book when he was little, and our daughter now enjoys it too. We love reading it because of the beautiful story.

5 out of 5 stars The Runaway Bunny.......2007-07-29

This is a favorite of mine. If you are religious, this book is similar to Psalm 139 in Hebrew Scriptures. For that reason I am very fond of the book.

5 out of 5 stars A story every child deserves to be told, with wonderful images, and in perfect size.......2007-06-08

I bought this book for my son when he just over a year old. I read to him ever since he was born, and he loves books.

This book is a good size for small hands, and very resistant for toddlers due to the cardboard pages. I was always able to let him hold it because of that, without having to tell him to be careful with it. And because of the beautiful and colorful pictures that the book has on every other page, he has always been inclined to take the book himself.

The story itself is beautiful. It speaks of a little bunny at a "silly" age, where he tells his mother all the things he will do to get away from her. The mother answers each of these "ideas" to run away, lovingly and patiently, telling him HOW she will always run after him, no matter what. The last idea that the bunny has "gets him caught", and he then gives up the thought of running away. The mother's reaction to this is to warmly welcome him back with a homely gesture that is to give him a snack.

My son was first drawn to the book by the pictures and the rhythm of the words... and well, he has always loved the "bunny" and "mommy" voices that one can make while reading it aloud. But now that he is almost three, he tells ME the whole story, and starts to giggle when we get to the page where the bunny gets caught. He loves it when I hold him in my arms and start tickling and kissing him at that point.

This is definitely his favorite bedtime book.

It's a book that has helped strengthen the mother-son bond in my family. It also teaches both mommy and son, if you read between the lines: unconditional love and patience.

I already have my older son's copy, but when I have my second son/daughter, I will get him/her a copy of their own. It's a book that belongs on a night table, and that every child deserves to listen to.

After reading this book, I guarantee that you will never visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art (or any wonderful, old cavern of a museum) without sneaking into the bathrooms to look for Claudia and her brother Jamie. They're standing on the toilets, still, hiding until the museum closes and their adventure begins. Such is the impact of timeless novels . . . they never leave us. E. L. Konigsburg won the 1967 Newbery Medal for this tale of how Claudia and her brother run away to the museum in order to teach their parents a lesson. Little do they know that mystery awaits!

Book Description

Claudia knew that she could never pull off the old-fashioned kind of running away...so she decided not to run FROM somewhere, but TO somewhere. And so, after some careful planning, she and her younger brother, Jamie, escaped -- right into a mystery that made headlines!

I want to go to New York to see this museum. This book was incredible and I loved the style of writing and the way the story unfolded letting each character have their own voice. I loved the notes at the end from the author. I really could tell she loved these characters and did care about their ever after. Every child should read this book. Wait, every adult should read this book!

Do you like adventure, mystery and fun? Well then this is the book for you. It is about a girl named Claudia (11), and her brother, Jamie(9); they decided to run away to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. They worked together which helped them to survive many days and nights in the museum. I learned that you should work together no matter who it is you are working with; your brother, your sister, a friend, or even Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler! I'd love to tell you more, but I can't spoil the story befroe you read "From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler."

Twelve year old Claudia Kincaid, is bored with her life - being an "A" student all the time, not having a big allowance, and having to deal with being the only girl and oldest of all her brothers. So, she decides to change things a bit to make them exciting. She takes all her allowance, her brother's allowance, her brother (Jamie) and a trumpet and violin case and heads off on an enjoyable, fun adventure to the Metropolitan Museum of art in New York City. There, they take tours everyday, sleep in queens' beds and do whatever they please while being careful not to get caught. One day, they uncover a beautiful, exquisite statue of an angel. As they get to know more about this angel, they find out that it is a mystery. No one knows who actually created this angel. Claudia is determined to find out who the artist is. But will she ever figure it out without getting caught?

This book was full of adventure, and filled determination and concentration. I really enjoyed this book because I felt like I was in the story with the characters through their good and bad times. Konigsburg makes this story become so realistic, it comes to life.

I recommend this book for anyone who loves a good adventure. The plot and setting of Konigsburg's book makes it an incredible, thrilling quest that I am sure you will enjoy! I know I enjoyed it!

5 out of 5 stars From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs Basil E.Frankweiler.......2007-04-17

E.L. Konigsburg wrote, From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, a Newberry children or teens book. The book is about two children running away from their house and staying at the Metropolitan Museums of Art. The obstacles they go through to live independently include regrets from going anyway. It reminds you how much you care about your parents. While at the museum the kids find a mysterious puzzle that has clues that to an unexpected conclusion. There are no weaknesses in this book. I read this book because my Aunt is the author. I am not saying this book is good because I am related to the Author but because it is a fantastic and interesting novel. I totally recommend this book to anyone. There is also other books of hers that have won Newberry medals. A movie has been made to go with the book if you are more of a movie kind of guy.

Book Description

Talk about fast food! A hilarious, high-speed tale from the inimitable Allan Ahlberg — catch it if you can!

What happens if someone's dinner decides that, well, it doesn't want to be eaten? For a hungry little boy named Banjo and a savory sausage named Melvin, it's a plight that can only result in a breathless escape — and what a chase it is! Off speeds the sturdy sausage — leading fork, knife, and plate, chair and table, a handful of fries with various French names, and three fat little peas — out the door, down the street, and around the park, with poor Banjo taking up the rear. Will the famished boy ever catch them? And what (gulp) happens to Melvin if he does? Allan Ahlberg is in his element with this fast and funny tale, while Bruce Ingman's kid-friendly illustrations add visual comedy to the chase.

5 out of 5 stars My 5 year old grandaughter's delight.......2007-09-24

I purchased this book for my 5 year old grandaughter and she absolutely loves it....... I'm not sure why other than it is always exciting for children when something like food get's out of the way.....so perhaps that's it.

It is fun to read aloud so grandma enjoys it too!

5 out of 5 stars Runaway Success.......2007-07-25

Very cute book, my little boy loves it and I enjoy reading it which is also a big help.

5 out of 5 stars Funny, clever story.......2007-06-27

I got this book after a link took me to it via Amazon. It looked fun...and it is. My kids (5 & 6) love this story. It is so clever! There are a lot of opportunities for kids to find things in the illustrations, remembering the names of all the peas is a riot. I will say that this story is best read aloud and with lots of dramatization (makes it more fun). After the second reading we were all hooked and giggling with each read.

5 out of 5 stars Happy Preschool Teacher.......2007-06-16

I work at a preschool that also has a pre-k class. The kids LOVED this book! I also really enjoyed it, I had ordered this copy for myself, but I think that we're going to need one at school too. It is fun, funny, and charming. The children in both classes are still talking about it days later. In general I'm not a fan of newer children's books, I would prefer to read The Runaway Bunny, but this book is destined to be a classic. The illistrations are colorful and engaging, and the story is told in a way that children can easily understand because it is how many of them speak and think (it is a little hard to get into the rythm at first). Even the kids who don't really enjoy books loved this one! It is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars Melvin is a hit!.......2007-06-08

Our nearly 3 year old son, just loves this book. The author makes each character simply come to life on every page. The illustrations are colourful and fun. The narrative is a little different, but keeps our son thoroughly engaged right 'til the end!

Book Description

The incomparable Alice Munro’s bestselling and rapturously acclaimed Runaway is a book of extraordinary stories about love and its infinite betrayals and surprises, from the title story about a young woman who, though she thinks she wants to, is incapable of leaving her husband, to three stories about a woman named Juliet and the emotions that complicate the luster of her intimate relationships. In Munro’s hands, the people she writes about–women of all ages and circumstances, and their friends, lovers, parents, and children–become as vivid as our own neighbors. It is her miraculous gift to make these stories as real and unforgettable as our own.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2007-09-28

What a wonderful collection of stories. I am not typically a fan of the short story genre and I wouldn't have read this if it wasn't on the reading list for my book club. I just finished this and I am ready to start reading another of her collections of short stories. I highly recommend this book!

4 out of 5 stars A Good Change of Pace.......2007-03-01

Alice Munro is a Canadian author who is widely considered one of the best living short story authors in North America. Her work has been published now for over 40 years and has also been dignified with many of the most prestigious awards in fiction.

Runaway was my first taste of Munro's work and it is also her most current publication since being released in 2004. The novel is comprised of 8 short stories spanning a total of 335 pages and I was very impressed with the collection on the whole.

It was very easy to initially grasp the premise of what Munro writes about - that of living and growing as a women in 20th century Canada. The stories all use this framework as a premise with which she further develops the story by explaining how individual spirit and soul is something to be cherished and accepted in people. Munro's work extensively uses human nature and its implied foibles to develop endearing stories of a personal nature.

The novel also uses a very deliberate setting of Canadian geography and style. Most of the stories do take place in a more rural setting and since I was raised among, and been aware of, the unique nature found in people in rural Canada, it was very easy for myself to identify and understand what Munro's characters believed in and thought. It is with these ideas where I think Munro's writing comes out strongest and which attribute to her quality of being known as a great Canadian writer.

If any criticisms can be made of her work, I found that some of the coincidences used to develop the story with sensation (randomly meeting a long lost friend on the streets of Vancouver, etc.) were used a bit too often as to be unbelievable. There is also the fact that Munro does tend towards a female reader a lot more than a male one. I could understand it if some men would find it harder to fully enjoy this novel as much as a woman would due to some of the themes present within the stories.

4 out of 5 stars Quite good.......2007-01-12

It is the first book by Alice Munro that I read and I have to say that it is quite good. I recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting Read.......2007-01-10

This was a good book to read on a holiday because of the short stories (some shorter than others). This was the first of Ms. Munro's books that I have read and I will read others.

4 out of 5 stars Acceptance of life's turns.......2006-12-28

There is a lot of sadness in these stories involving mostly middle-aged women as they face various trials and tribulations from dealing with an unhappy marriage, dissatisfaction with academia, having a child abandon you, a missed connection, adoption, etc. The characters are thoughtful and despite problems find a way to move on. Definitely a set of stories that keeps one's attention. Three of the stories involve Juliet in various stages of her life. One wonders why a novel was not written - but the author knows best.

5 out of 5 stars My 5-Year-Old Loves This Book!.......2007-09-10

She received this book with the CD for her birthday and loved it so much she had to share it with her pre-school class again and again. I ended up donating it to the class and had to purchase another copy for home.

2 out of 5 stars so dissapointed this was not an original marsupial sue story.......2007-07-26

rather, a total rip-off of the old gingerbread man tale. If this had been free, I guess I wouldn't care. But for $13.00, I expected more from Lithgow. My daughter (and I) loved his other, original stories (I'm a Manatee; Marsupial Sue) so I expected great things. I feel badly writing this in the face of 10 reviews with 5 stars, but we were incredibly dissapointed that marsupial sue was not even in this story, other than I guess she's playing the Auntie character. The CD is great, so I'll give it 2 stars since I feel like I paid $13.00 for a few minutes of listening fun in the car. My daughter looks at the book while Lithgow tells the story in his always terrific style.

5 out of 5 stars WOW! AMAZING!.......2007-06-11

I can not say enough positive things about this book. If you have any doubts about buying this book, dont! It is a very well put together book that all my pre-schoolers just love! From the ages of 2.5 all the way to 5 years old! They love it so much our play this year is this book!

5 out of 5 stars John L is an amazing reader!.......2007-05-19

This book would be very good and very funny on its own, but with John Lithgow doing the reading on the CD, it becomes hysterical. I bought this for the kindies in my class, and ended up having to buy a copy for my own daughters, as well! This is a no-brainer recommendation!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Fun!.......2007-03-10

My five year old daughter and I read this book three times together this morning. Then, we listened to the CD five times together, then she listened to it three times more!!!! This is a wonderfully entertaining and funny story. My little girl has been running around singing the song all morning!
Thanks John Lithgow, for using your talent to entertain families!

As a follow-up to Hangman's Curse (now a major motion picture), Nightmare Academy is a frightening thrill-ride that takes a realistic look at right and wrong, as Elijah and Elisha seek to find the truth behind the mysterious disappearance of two runaways. The Springfield twins go undercover and end-up in a strange academy where Truth is continually challenged, a gang-like war develops, and Elijah is taken to an ominous mansion from which no one has ever returned. This book has been the #1 bestseller on the CBA bestseller list for six months running, with over 350,000 copies of the Veritas series sold to date.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING Book!!!!!.......2006-07-23

This book was definitely one of the best I've ever read!! I just couldn't put it down. Nightmare Academy was much different from the first book in the series, Hangman's Curse, in that this time, the Springfield twins had no backdoor. No way to escape if things got rough. They also had no clue where they were. But, as always, the kids used their talents and devotion to God to prevail. I loved how the twins stood up for each other countless times in this book, and also how they wouldn't let anything shake their faith. I would recommend this book to anyone!! It was FANTASTIC!

5 out of 5 stars Frank Peretti's Creepiest Book Yet (IMO).......2006-03-17

This book was a difficult one for me to read. Usually, I can sail through a Frank Peretti novel in one sitting, but this one I had to take in small doses because it had my adrenaline going so much. I think the reason it creeped me out so badly is because, unlike most of his other novels, which have somewhat of a science fiction element to them, this one is so much more in the realm of not only plausibility, but probability. (I have not read Hangman's Curse, so I can't compare it to that.) It would not surprise me one bit to find out that places like the Knight-Moore Academy actually exist, and I find that very scary. It is chilling for me to know that there are many people who really do believe the way the faculty at the Knight-Moore Academy does, and that is the reason we are seeing the current breakdown in our society. I believe this book is an eye-opener and a must-read for everyone.

5 out of 5 stars A Real Page-turner !!!.......2005-09-29

This book is an awesome book. I don't want to give away the whole story but here is a little bit of it. This book is about two Christian kids and their parents struggle to discover the truth to the mysterious actions of a once was lost but now and found boy named Alvin Rogers. This is the second mission of the Vertias Project team. The first project was "Hangman's Curse". They track Alvin to a shelter that disappears and then end up at a place called Knight Moore Academy or as Alvin calls it "Nightmare Academy". They soon discover that the "mission" is going to be harder than they thought when the whole academy believes that there is no truth.

I thought this was an awesome book because I love mystery books. I also thought it was awesome because it really keeps you at the edge of your seat wondering what will happen next. This book also describes of what life would some what be like if no one believes that there was such a thing as truth. Frank Peretti is descriptive with the way he writes so you know what exactly what happens and when it happens. If you like mysteries you should read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Spies For God.......2005-09-16

An entertaining adventure based on the tenets of Christianity and beliefs in good vs.evil. Can give younger people guides for leading an upright life.

5 out of 5 stars The Nightmare Academy.......2005-09-07

Really enjoyed this book, even more than the first in the Veritas series. The emphasis on truth and morals - what happens in a society where absolutes are removed. Captivating and moved at a good pace. I hope there are more Veritas cases coming in the future. (My kids love the glow in the dark cover too - nice touch for the type of mystery thriller book).

Book Description

Things had been getting a little better until I got a letter from my dead sister. That more or less ruined my day.

When Sunny's older sister, Jazz, ran away to New York, Sunny was secretly relieved. Everyone loved Jazz, talked about Jazz, wished they were friends with Jazz. Jazz was perfect and Sunny was...well, not Jazz.

Then Jazz's apartment building burns to the ground and she is presumed dead. Sunny's family, already broken by divorce, unravels. Dad's drinking skyrockets, and Mom's depression hits an all-time nonfunctioning low. Sunny is left to cope.

Then they get a letter from Jazz saying she is coming home. But how? Jazz is dead, right?

2 out of 5 stars Disappointment from a Good Author.......2007-10-01

Okay, there are twists (and I won't give them away), but this story is very familiar and the story never rises above mediocre. It might be good to a reader 12 or under, but any high school student will read it with cynicism and disbelief. Giles' other works are high quality - Shattering Glass is a favorite - but this one just seemed flat. You might feel sorry for the narrator, Sunny, but you won't buy into her story.

4 out of 5 stars Dead Girls Don't Write Letters.......2007-05-30

Dead Girls Don't Write Letters

The Book Dead Girls Don't Write Letters by Gail Giles and was published by is medium length. This book is a very suspenseful and depressing story. Dead Girls Don't Write Letters is also a fiction story that takes place in a small town that includes the fallowing characters: Sonny, Jasmine, family, and friends. Sonny is the main character of the story and the youngest sister of Jasmine who she dislikes.

The majority of this story takes place in California where Sonny and her family live. Most of the story is told through first person point of view through Sonny's eyes. Some other main characters in the story include Mrs. H. a.k.a. Mrs. Hamming the mean teacher who talks bad about Sonny after Jasmine dies. There is also the entire staff talking about her as well but Mrs. H. was the cruelest of all. The protagonist of this story was Sonny because she tries to find out what really happened to Jasmine because the picture that she sent did not look anything like Jasmine. The antagonist of the story was Sonny herself as well because instead of letting go of the past and what Jasmine had done to her and she let it bother her to the point that she didn't care if Jasmine was alive or dead.
One strength of this book is that it keeps you focused and you don't want to stop reading because you want to know what's going to happen next. Although the book doesn't automatically draw your attention once you start reading, after the first couple pages it really draws you in. It starts out talking about her daily schedule now that Jasmine is dead she has now taken a new role at home as the new mother in the house. She has to take care of the baby because her mother is too depressed and won't stop looking at the scrap book that used to belong to Jasmine, that is if she when she's not at school. She must come home during her lunch period to check up on things at home and see if her mom kept her promise and got dressed this morning or if she just stayed in her pajamas and cried while looking through the scrap book again.
Another thing I really enjoyed was that the book reminds me of my own life and how my sister treats me the same way Jasmine treated Sonny as a child but the only difference was that my sister was a little bit more thoughtful as a child and would not blame things on me as much because my parents knew I could not have done any of the things she accused me of because I was too nice and I really didn't have the ability to do it anyways. I also liked the way this story was told because it had some parts where I almost wanted to cry for Sonny because her sister was mean and I hate my sister now because of everything she did, and I can relate to Sonny in her pain she has bottled up.
I was arguing weather I should or should not read Dead Girls Don't Write Letters because it sounded scary and I can't stand scary stories but I always have the tendency to read them anyways. I would defiantly recommend this book for anyone who has a mean sister that can sort of relate to this story and to anyone who is just looking for a interesting and fictional book that's suspenseful as well, because it is a really good book, especially the ending!

4 out of 5 stars Mystery of a dead or alive girl.......2007-04-03

When jumbled up Sunny discovers a letter from her dead sister she freezes out of shock she can't believe what she was seeing.A letter from Jazz, but how could that be? She couldn't tell her mother because she was on ant-depressent pills and she didn't know how she would react, and her father was a drunky and would just probably get even more drunk,so she went up stairs to her room and hid it.Then the next day she just couldn't resist but to read it,and it said that Jazz had not really died in the fire that the reporters claim that she had and that she was coming this Sunday, and Sunny had nothing else to do but tell her parents. When she did her mom went hasterical, she made every kind of food that Jazz liked and even cleaned the houes all by herself. When Jazz came she got all the atention just like she always did and Sunny hardly got some, but something was just plain old wierd about Jazz, she was to pretty to be her,but she knew all about them, and she claims that she got a knew make over. There was just something wrong about her, and one day she even could Sunny Karen when that wasn't her name! Was she really Jazz are was she someone else? Read it and find out.

3 out of 5 stars Abstract- Makes you think.......2006-10-30

I checked this book out at our middle school library. I didn't understand the title, and you wouldn't either. It starts off with Sunny Reynolds whose mother is in severe depression and spends her days crying and staring at her dead sister Jazz's scrapbook. Her father is an alchohaulic. When Sunny recieves a letter from her supposedly "dead" sister (who *supposedly died in an apartment fire, though her remains were not identified) she is very very happy. But when "Jazz" visits- her Mother is so, so happy, and Sunny notices Jazz is a lot different- she looks different, acts different. Her dad believes so too. So Sunny snoops and finds out that she "really isn't" Jazz.

At the end, the author turns on you---

"Granny's eyes turn away.
"Do I think a girl cam here pretending to be Jazz?".
I nodded.
"No, Sunny, I don't."
"What about mrs. mallory?"
"She didn't actually speak to jazz, did she?"
And there it was. I pulled the journal from my desk. The letter was inside.
"Then Where did this come from? This is proof."
Granny sat on my bed, smoothed the sweater she had been folding, placed it next to her, and took the journal.

"Sunny, you've been forging your Lily's name on school notes since you were ten. You paid the bills last year, signing your mother's name. My guess is that you can do a passable forgery of Dan's signature, too." Busted.
"Look at this journal, Sunny. It's more about you than about Jazz. When was Jazz ever concerned about anyone else. She was always the main character in her own play."
I guess my face showed surprise.
"Oh, yes, I loved Jazz, but she was a con artist. A good one" Granny's eyes filled. She cleared her throat.
"But this journal. No, it's not Jazz. These are words you needed. You needed a way to give Jazz back to your parents so she could leave."
"But--"
"Sunny, look at your desk."
The Leonardo book was there. My practice notebook next to it.
"When you do mirror-writing, is it your own handwriting written backwards?" I looked.
"No," I whispered. Afraid now.
"No." Granny's voice wass soothing. Like mine when I didn't want to spook Mom.
"It's exactly like Leonardo da Vinci's."

She handed me the journal.

"You wrote this."

In the end, Sunny is sent to a boarding school and sees a therapist. The last page says,
"It was friday. I had plans with my friends for the weekened. I took the wide oak steps two at a time, into the burgandy-carpeted entry hall.

I opened my mailbox. Only one letter. On yellow stationery. I pulled it out and stared at the address.
"Wow, wierd."
The voice came from over my shoulder, making me jump.
"What's weird?"
Kim, my roommate, pointed at the letter.
"That's your handwriting. Sending letters to yourself?"

My head roared and my vision tilted. I leaned against the wall for balance and ripped open the letter.
"Took a while to find you. Planning to see you soon."
The signature was spiky and back-slanted.
"Sunny."
What have I done?"

I still don't get it. Read it and let me know what you think. On a last note, is Jazz really dead, or is Sunny mentally ill? Just a thought.

5 out of 5 stars Patricia Sprinkle is a very convincing writer.......2005-08-07

I bought this book a couple of years ago. I didn't know who Patricia Sprinkle was at the time. I loved the book, and I loved the way each character is brought to life by Ms. Sprinkle. They all seem so real, like someone you've met, or known before. I also like the way that she put a list of each character's name, and the role that they each play in the story in the front of the novel. That was very convenient. I didn't have to wonder who was who, and who did what. It would be great if all writers would do that in their books.

5 out of 5 stars Goodnight noises everywhere..........2007-05-07

I absolutely love reading this book to my daughter. I've read it so many times, I practically have it memorized. I had never heard of My World which is the last story featured in the collection, and I wasn't too impressed with it as I was Goodnight moon and Runaway Bunny. But oh well, for the price I believe its a pretty good deal.

5 out of 5 stars Three Books in One.......2006-10-10

Over the Moon is a collection of three books in one. Goodnight Moon, The Runaway Bunny and My World are all written by late children's book author Margaret Wise Brown and illustrated by late artist Clement Hurd.

Goodnight Moon is celebrating its 60th anniversary. A sweet little bunny tells everything in his room goodnight as he settles in for the night.

A red balloon. Kittens. Mittens. A comb. A brush. The bunny describes his room and wishes all of his daytime play things goodnight. The illustrations also describe the room, giving parents the perfect opportunity to show each item to their children as they read.

The Runaway Bunny features a boy bunny who wants to run away from home. He describes all of the many adventures he will take to leave the comfort of his home and mommy.

But mommy bunny isn't about to let her baby boy run away. She describes the many adventures she will take to bring her bunny boy back home.

My World is a fun story full of rhymes. Comparisons like mother's chair versus my chair show big differences in adult sizes and child sizes.

All stories are perfect bedtime tales for parents reading to young children. They're also good starter stories for children learning how to read.

Parents are advised to approach this wrenching memoir with caution--it will evoke all their worst fears. It's not just that Martha Tod Dudman frankly delineates her daughter Augusta's descent into drinking, smoking, drug use, and truancy, as well as casually lying about all of it. Dudman also acknowledges her own feelings of isolation, despair, and incredible guilt. Has she caused Augusta's behavior? Is it because she divorced Augusta's father? Did she spend too many hours working at her family-owned radio network? Is Augusta mimicking Dudman's own troubled teen years, when she got thrown out of high school for smoking pot? There aren't any easy answers, merely an agonizing litany of fears realized as Augusta comes and goes in her mother's house, vanishing for days at a time, moods ranging from manipulative to sullen to openly defiant, until things get so bad that Dudman enrolls her first in a wilderness program, then in a school program for troubled kids. Nothing miraculous happens, only more ugly confrontations, until Augusta finally runs away. Through the turmoil, however, we can see the troubled girl slowly and painfully turning a corner. Dudman's plain, punchy prose perfectly conveys the terror of a parent watching her child's life, along with her own, careen off the tracks, yet she also captures the charm and vitality of her "impossible, enraging, engaging, infuriating" daughter. As upsetting as this narrative often gets, there's always a trace of hope that Augusta and her family will pull through. --Wendy Smith

Book Description

The story of a girl who is doing everything to hurt herself and a mother who would try anything to try to save her.

True, she had stopped coming down for breakfast. Stayed up in her room, ran out the door late for school, missed the bus and had to have a ride. But you think, well, that's how they are, aren't they, teenagers? And you try to remember how you were, but you were different and the times were different and it was so long ago. And she's suddenly so angry at you, but then, another time, she's just the same. She's just your little girl. You sit with her and you talk about something, or you go shopping for school clothes and everything seems all right. And you forget how you stood in her room and how the center of your stomach felt so cold. When you found the cigarette. When you found the blue pipe. When you found the little bag she said was aspirin.

Download Description

"I'm not telling you where I am. Don't try to find me", says Martha Tod Dudman's wayward daughter at the start of Augusta, Gone. A single parent, Martha was sure she was giving her two children the perfect life, sheltering them from the wild tumult of her own youth. But when Augusta turned fifteen, things started to happen; first the cigarette, then the blue pipe and the little bag Augusta says are aspirin. Just talking to her is like putting a hand in the garbage disposal. Martha doesn't know if she's confronting adolescent behavior, craziness, her own failures as a parent -- or all three. Augusta, Gone is the story of a girl who is doing everything to hurt herself and a mother who would try anything to save her. This fiercely gripping memoir unfolds at a relentless pace, with pedal-to-the-metal narrative drive. Yet its ultimate message of forgiveness and redemption charts a course through the troubled waters of adolescence, and leaves an indelible imprint.

4 out of 5 stars My Worst Nightmares.......2007-08-22

This book was wrenching to read. It is the story of a kid's life gone wrong, from a loving, caring, frustrated parent's point of view.

As a parent of young children, I wanted to see something like "If I had or had not done (fill in the blank), my kid would never have gotten into trouble"

But it's not that easy. I think the sad point to this book is that, well, stuff happens sometimes (as the edited forrest gump said on TNT the other night).

The family is split, and the mom does work a lot. But that's common. The mom tries to instill good values (be non-judgmental, hard working, honest) into her children. But somehow, it doesn't take with her daughter. Her daughter, simply put, goes down a dark path.

There is not a real happy ending. There is some closure. But for a mom of young kids, this is a horror story.

I remember watching this movie on tv. I really enjoyed reading the book. Helped me to understand my own family member's addiction.

3 out of 5 stars 850125 Review for Wachtel's Comtemp Lit Class.......2007-05-01

To start off, I didn't like this book. My thoughts aside, I thought this book was very well written and I can feel for Ms. Dudman. Ms. Dudman's personal narrative is heart felt and really showed her feelings on the subject of out of control teens. The fact that it was a true story really hits home.

There are a few negatives of the book. One is that it seems a little bit over the top. Although don't know anyone like Augusta, and I bet there are some out there, the fact that she was so out of control is doesn't seem possible to me. In my experience, there are people that are rebellious, but not to the extent of Augusta. Another negative of the book was that it got to be repetitive. At the beginning of the book, Martha's feelings and problems with Augusta are interesting, but when you reach the middle of the book, Ms. Dudman is still talking about her problems with Augusta, and it just gets boring.

A positive of the book is the writing style. When you're reading the book, the way Ms. Dudman writes makes you feel like you're in her head, thinking what she is thinking. Her descriptions of her feelings are very good, and you can imagine how she is feeling.

In conclusion, this book is a good pick if you enjoy reading about teen drama. Personally, this book was boring and I could not connect to the characters. This has been a review of Augusta, Gone by Martha Todd Dudman.

4 out of 5 stars DPHS 720234 Review For Wachtel.......2007-05-01

Let me start off with this statement: I did not particularly enjoy this book. That is mostly due to my own tastes in books. Having said that, I found it to be a very well written book. I could definitly feel for Ms. Dudman and her trials and hardships through all of this.

For those of you who have not read the book yet, it is a true story about a mother (Martha Tod Dudman), once a free, rebellious spirit, gone corporate mother of two. The story follows her as she tries to fix her relationship with her daughter, while trying to be a good mother and repair her shattered life. It not only shows her attempts with her daughter, but also her own personal growth and healing during the process.

The book has quite a few social commentaries about families, especially motherhood, substance abuse, and social responsibility. Dudman uses her own experiences to relay these lessons, mostly through her explanations of Augusta's life. She explains all the consequences and the problems that happened in her own life, and how they seemed to be occurring in Augusta's as well, though at a much more dramatic level.

Like I had said earlier, it was a very well written book, with a lot of lessons for life, however it did not strike a very good chord in my heart. I just couldn't find it as consuming as most of the books I read, however I would definitely recommend reading it once, just for the lessons and messages sent across.

4 out of 5 stars Augusta, Gone.......2007-01-13

Augusta, Gone by Martha Tod Dudman is the tragic story of a teenage girl's struggle with smoking, drugs, a wild teenage experience and her attempted recovery in the end. The book is a true story written years later by Augusta's mother as she looked back on the desolation of Augusta's teenage years. Martha worries about her children as any maternal figure would, but is unable to control them as a single mother. Augusta goes out late at night, spends days at friend's houses and does not go to school. She smokes cigarettes, marijuana, does cocaine, speed, acid, and just about anything else she can get her hands on. As Augusta becomes more and more unruly, Martha becomes desperate to help Augusta by some means. Martha hears from a friend about a program in Montana that helps children like Augusta dry out and improve their behavior. After the summer program, Augusta is sent to a school that also deals with these problems and is meant to guide the children in their new life. While there are many twists and turns in the end of the story, the main fact of the matter is that Augusta can not break away from her wild lifestyle until she is ready to, and she is able to receive support from her family.

This book is an excellent read and something that many teenagers would enjoy reading. Some scenes were shocking and almost disturbing that one girl could be so substandard. When Augusta is at the school and must tell her parents everything that she has done, she has a list of fifteen-plus "confessions" that she makes and for me, this was a very rude awakening. It is scary that this is actually a true story and many teens have these problems with drug abuse, eating disorders and suicide attempts. This is a very meaningful book because it shows a great deal of truth in many frightening situations. People can learn from this book the consequences of poor choices made as teenagers.

Augusta, Gone is very similar to the book Go Ask Alice (by an anonymous author). Both are true stories of teenage girls and their struggles with drug abuse and their attempt to put an end to their addictions. In Go Ask Alice, the main character runs away from home to be on her own in a new city with a new life, but constantly slips into her old ways because she does not have support from her family. In Augusta, Gone, Augusta is actually sent away by her mother to recover but as her program ends, she also slips into her old ways. Both girls in the stories return home when they are ready and want to start over with a new life. Augusta was much more fortunate because she is about to begin a new school that she will fit in to. Unfortunately for the girl in Go Ask Alice, she lets go of her diary when she returns home and we find out she died of a drug overdose just two weeks later. Again, books like these have a very important meaning and show us what not to do in this dangerous world we live in.
