Love it..........2007-04-30
This book is sssooo good. I have never laughed so hard as I did with this book. It is hilarious, cleaver, and romantic. I can't wait to read it again and I am so going to go and buy it.
Beautiful.......2006-12-27
I'm going to have to track down everything Julie Anne Long writes, I'm beyond impressed. In this book she displays an exquisite gift for description and feeling - especially in quiet and introspective moments, in subtle and wordless exchanges between characters. So thoroughly real as to leave one breathless with the honest beauty of her words. At the same time, you'll probably laugh out loud as I did, repeatedly, because you cannot help but join the characters in the moment and FEEL their whole range of emotions as Ms. Long describes...from mirth, to annoyance, to awe.
Out of the multitude of books I have read in my life, songs I have heard, and movies I have watched in every genre, I have felt the need to copy down less than a dozen passages that I just needed to be able to "keep" because they touched me or appealed to me so strongly. This book contains one such passage. In this edition, it's on page 180. I will carry this passage with me for a lifetime. "Beautiful."
The publisher's description portraying this novel as a comedy is not false, but it's horribly inadequate. The value of this book is infinitely greater than the trite description.
Amazing chemistry between heroine and hero.......2006-11-04
The first few sentences of a novel are key to catching my attention as a new reader, browsing the bookstore for a good read or a new find. This one is no exception. " 'Come at once,' the missive said. 'Uncle Edward is dying'. Uncle Edward was ALWAYS dying." Now I'm intrigued. Who's Uncle Edward? Who is he to Gideon Cole, the hero? I also loved the chemistry between Gideon Cole and Lily. I fell in love with both of them, one by one, and then together. Lily's younger sister is adorable. The supporting cast rounds out the story well. This is a great Pygmalion-type story for readers who love a great plot- and character-driven romance. This is my favorite of Julie Anne Long's books. Her other books The Runaway Duke, and Beauty and the Spy are not as good. A++ for To Love a Thief - a book definitely worth re-reading!
A must read.......2006-08-10
Ms. Long doesn't disappoint. This book is a keeper on any shelf.
A Light Read But Beautifully Written.......2006-07-19
Gideon Cole is a brilliant barrister with a master plan. Because of his past, and his father's inability to stop gambling, Gideon is on a mission to recover his family's fortune and also to marry Lady Constance Clary, daughter of a wealthy marquis. The problem is that he now has competition in Lord Jarvis, a very wealthy and titled gentleman who is also actively courting Constance. Gideon decides that what Constance needs is competition, and the girl who will help him with that just tried to steal his watch. Lily, in order to avoid prison, agrees to Gideon's proposal. The rest of the story is fairly predictable but brilliantly woven.
This was such a delicious book to read. It was mesmerizing, enthralling, and sheer bliss when I plowed through it. Julie Anne Long has such a great gift. Her writing is simply spellbinding. Her ability to draw you into the story, allowing you to feel the tension, the suspense, and the longing felt by both characters is just so unique. This is the first book I've read of hers and I certainly look forward to reading more.

Short and Steamy Guilty Pleasure.......2006-07-25
If you've ever read any of the other 'Bad Boy' anthologies out there and liked them, you won't be disappointed with this one. This book contains six super short (50 pages each) and steamy contemporary romances. All are written well and a breeze to read. They're sort of like a snickers bar for your libido -a little guilty pleasure. Some are laugh out loud funny and some will make wish the book was water-proof for a cold shower. Nice beach read -on second thought you may not want to read these stories in public if your prone to blushing.:)
Momentary Relief from Real Life.......2006-07-24
Romance writers know how to fantasize and then put their imaginations on paper with extraordinary flair. Six of them make this compilation of skin tingling stories possible to be consumed by particular group of readers. The title of the collection is appropriate although the short narrations of attractions and entanglements could be savored more before turning in at night. Leave it to one's mind to be tickled by the fantasies where sweet dreams take over as the eyes closed shut after a long grueling day. Each story is a dilly.
Forget the sand and enjoy the read!.......2006-07-16
A really great collection for summer reading. Each story stands alone, though one or two are connected to other stories by the same author. Each story is just long enough to deal with attention span problems brought on by the heat! enjoy!
quick and fun!.......2005-07-14
This anthology was unlike any I'd read before. There are 6 authors, and at first I wasn't certain I'd feel fulfilled. However, it turned out to be a fun book. The stories are quick and if you are like me, sometimes it's nice to take a break from the long, intense romance stories and read something you can finish in one sitting. As a mom, I don't have loads of time to read, so this was a nice change of pace for me.
The most exciting stories were Foster's, McCarthy's, and Denison's. Those women know how to write a quick romance and leave you with a feeling of contentment.
Fast Fun Stories For The Road!!
The title of this book says it all !!.......2004-07-30
PERFECT FOR THE BEACH is truly the book to take to the beach with you. The story is very entertaining !!
Book Description
Gwyneth
With her hand in marriage and the security of her beloved Haverleigh at stake, Lady Gwyneth is desperate. So when she comes upon a young man who might be the solution to her predicament, she does not hesitate to act, though it means entering into a dangerous deceit and inviting a thief into her castle.
The Thief
All Gavin has known is a life of lawless poverty. Left for dead and taken in by a very young, very determined lady, he has little choice but to entertain her request. Posing as a squire, he begins to train the farmers and craftsmen of Haverleigh in the art of combat. In doing so, Gavin begins to know a far different life -- and to crave all it has to offer.
As Haverleigh is secured through their labor and collusion, sparks fly between Gwyneth and her thief. In a moment of rash indiscretion, a kiss nearly undoes them both. Love between a lady and a thief is unthinkable...unless the truth can remain hidden.
Customer Reviews:
Cute ^_^.......2006-06-23
Gwyneth and the Theif is my favorite Avon True Romance so far. The concept is the most alluring, and the story is the most fulfilling. The romance is light but cute, and the characters are likable and relatable.
The story is about Lady Gwyneth, who is supervising her father's land while he is ill, and a not-too-common Theif. Gwyneth's lands are threatened by an unwelcome suitor who wishes to gain only power and land. Gwyneth rescuses the Theif, shelters him, and asks him to train her people. Happy ending indeed! Quite an enjoyable Read! The romance is the best attribute of the book.
I do believe there is one flaw though: believability. The rash and somewhat unlikely decision of Gwyneth to use the Theif to train her people, and her people's unquestionable acceptance of her decision detract from the book. Things work out so well, if not too well, for the heroes and heroines of the Avon True Romance series, but I believe this is to be expected in a teen series.
Regardless, Gwyneth and the Theif was enjoyable, cute as ever, and relaxing to read. I believe any young historical romance lover will find this book to their satisfaction.
Happy Reading! ^_^
I Can't Believe Anyone Liked This Book!.......2005-12-21
I started reading the Avon True Romance for Teens series just this year and I loved what I read. I had read Anna and the Duke (my favorite) Emily and the Scott, and Victoria and the Rogue. I loved all three of them.
Little did I know they ALL weren't that way.
I had read an exerpt from one of the other books and tried hard to get this book. I finally do. I begin reading... yada, yada, yada. When I got to almost the end of the book, I was stunned: I just couldn't believe any chemistry between the two main characters. The book disappointed me so much that I just stopped reading it. What was the point? These people weren't believable and the plot looked so predictable. Why read something that we can easily see the ending to? The other books made you wonder, but even if there was a good climax in this one, I doubt it would save this story!
A bit disappointing.......2005-07-20
I was a little disappointed in this book. It seemed like nothing really exciting happened...the romance seemed a little dull, as did the plot: Gwyneth sees Gavin, a thief, get beat up by his fellow thieves and left for dead, so she takes him back to her castle to teach her village how to fight and protect themselves against an evil neighbor who wants Gwyneth's land and her hand in marriage, which he thinks will be easy to gain since Gwyneth's father is sick. Gwyneth and Gavin fall in love, but Gavin thinks she won't want a thief, so he stays away from her, while in the meantime the village fights against the evil neighbor's forces. A knight comes and stops the fight, and says Gavin can be his squire, so someday he can marry Gwyneth. Gwyneth's father gets better, everyone lives happily ever, the end. I was disappointed with such an unoriginal plot.
A Total Page Turner!.......2005-06-06
I couldn't put the book down! It was exciting, and Moore made sure to write about characters that the reader could relate to.
Gwyneth is at the mercy of horrid DeVillers who intends to take over her land. She is unlike most girls of her class at that period of time since she runs the land because her father is ill. Gwyneth fears that DeVillers will take her home by force but she cannot afford mercenaries, so she has no way to protect her land...until Gavin came into the picture.
Gavin is thief. He is very handsome, clever, and acts more like a gentlemen then most thiefs. He is rescued by Gwyneth and agrees to help her.
As the old saying goes, opposites attract, and this romance novel is full of adventure, love, and humor. I very much enjoyed this, and all of the other Avon True Romance books, and I highly reccommend them all!
an enjoyable read...cheesy and romantic! :D.......2003-12-12
Gwyneth and the Thief is a fun historical romance about a lady and a thief. gwyneth, 15, is left in charge of her father's castle when he gets sick. she enlists the aid of gavin, a thief, to pose as a squire and train the villagers to fight in case her neighbour [a baron] tries to take over her castle. obviously, she falls in love with gavin and him with her. they know that a love between a thief and a lady can never take place. what will happen next?!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
i really enjoyed this book. the plot is quite unbelievable and the lines are cheesy and very modern [not at all medieval], but the book is still very enjoyable. as long as you don't go in expecting too much, you will enjoy this!
Book Description
Bollywood movies are glorious, colorful spectacles of romance, action, drama, song, and dance. The biggest film industry in the world, Bollywood puts out some nine hundred movies a year, which are watched by passionate fans around the globe.
Stephen Alter—a writer who grew up in India and has inside access to Bollywood—acts as translator and tour guide in this firsthand look into the world of Bombay films. Following the making of a Bollywood version of Othello, he explores the enormous popularity of Hindi movies and reveals the actors, directors, musicians, and feats of artifice that make them so compelling and unique. From the blessing ceremony performed each time a movie starts shooting to the secrets behind the song- and-dance extravaganzas, Fantasies of a Bollywood Love-Thief is a beguiling introduction to the rituals and culture of a moviemaking industry so similar to and yet utterly different from our own.
Customer Reviews:
"We'll have to sort things out creatively".......2007-08-27
Stephen Alter notes an off-hand comment by an assistant director of the film Omkara could be the motto of the Hindi film industry, also known as Bollywood: "Hum ko creatively sort out karna padega" ("We'll have to sort things out creatively"). Improvisation is a skill people must have in the Indian movie industry. Indicative of Bollywood in general, the makers of Omkara wear many hats: the director is also a co-writer of the screenplay & the composer of its music and Ajay Devgan's secretary (similar to an American actor's agent) is also the producer of the film.
This work primarily focuses on the making of the 2006 film Omkara, a retelling of Shakespeare's tragedy Othello, starring Ajay Devgan, Saif Ali Khan, and Kareena Kapoor. Alter compliments following the making of Omkara by interlacing his narrative with meetings and interviews of Hindi film industry luminaries such as actor Dev Anand, song lyricist and poet Gulzar, poster artist M. F. Husain, directors Madhur Bhandarkar, Shyam Benegal, Shekhar Kapur, Govind Nihalani, Soham Shah, and experts who specialize in different areas of the industry.
This was an effortless and involving work of nonfiction to sink into & Mr. Alter's writing is accomplished. If you are interested in learning more about what goes into creating & completing a film in the Bollywood film industry with current information "Fantasies of a Bollywood Love Thief" fits the bill. I found the narrative's conclusion to be somewhat abrupt, but the book was involving and engaging from beginning to end. The end book matter includes a bibliography for the book's few in-text citations & a comprehensive index.
Very Realistic Characters.......2002-08-15
Tracy, Tracy, Tracy....you pull the reader into the wonderfully fresh and realistic story line, introducing readers to characters we actually LIKE...what talent. I can only guess that a previous bad reader review was perhaps written by an asexual person of repressed or nonexistent hormones, or maybe...but, no. Not even a high school or college foe would be so childish as to display such psycho-bitchiness in a review. Thanks for one of life's pleasures--a truly good read.
Poorly Written.......1999-12-18
Although this book costs less than three dollars, it is hardly worth it. Absurdly drawn characters, combined with a thoroughly tedious and altogether unoriginal plot, make reading this trite 'novel' an act of pure drudgery. I realize that this is a Harlequin Romance and is therefore written by someone of mediocre (at best) talent, but is it too much to ask that the publisher employ editors capable of distinguishing light romantic entertainment from childish drivel such as this?
Very funny, very fresh.......1998-08-26
A fresh, funny take on romance. Likeable, sexy characters, fast pace, lots of entertaining and well-made subplots make this a winner. Look forward to more from this author.
Funny, lighthearted. A great read........1998-08-24
The Fiance Thief is original and light-hearted with a quirky, appealing heroine, and a sexy, good-sport hero. Amazingly well-developed subplots and supporting characters add depth. Look forward to more by this author.
