Very Informative As Far As It Goes...But More Detail Needed.......2007-01-26
An Apple repair manual for desktops and portables printed by Apple? I couldn't believe it when I saw it on Amazon; so, I had to order it!
All the essential information for user upgradeable components is covered in great detail with pictures. There are trouble shooting procedures for each recent Apple desktop and portable. When my iBook refused to boot, I diagnosed the need for a logic board upgrade using the book. (I was 99% sure of the problem before since I had a similar issue on a refurb iBook a year or so prior, but I digress...)
Detailed procedures are provided for all the steps up to the point but not including the instructions needed to remove the logic board. (This is true for each model, not just the iBook.) When disassembling and re-assembling the iBook, it is very important that these instructions be followed exactly and the correct screws used for each hole. Failure to put the correct screw type in the proper hole can (and will) damage the iBook logic board, optical drive, and other components. (I almost learned this the hard way, and I don't recall seeing this warning in the book!) I was able to install my own logic board by carefully marking each screw with its location on a set of diagrams I drew. This took extra time, but it saved me from breaking another component. Also, make sure that you attach the heat sink correctly with the proper heat conducting tape.
It would have been nice to expand coverage to include removal and installation of logic boards. This would greatly expand the number of pages of the book, possibly making it unwieldy. Perhaps this should have been two books? one for desktops and one for portables?
Very usefull tool to have in your mac repair kit.......2006-02-01
I have relied on this book a few times now when repairing the older clamshell style ibooks and also some of the newer G3 and G4 white ibooks. It's got a pretty helpful guide for taking them apart and putting them back together. I have also used this book as a reference tool to determine what configurations various Macs I am selling or working on had when they were first introduced. For example I sold my G4 powermac sawtooth and wanted to know exactly what specifications it had, so I looked in the book and found the 500 mhz powermac G4 (gigabit ethernet) and found it was released in 2000, it also showed the cache, number of memory slots, expansion slots, basic stuff like that for a quick reference. And it covers all models of ibooks and powermacs, imacs, but not all powerbooks unfortunately. It does not have any info on the pismos, lombards or wallstreets powerbooks or any older macs. That would be the only draw-back, I wish it had some information on the G3 powerbooks. It also has chapter tests at the end of each chapter, that are unfortunately pretty basic simple questions. Great big useful book for any mac tech or just plain apple computer users who want a little more info on their computer.
Great Apple Hardware Manual.......2005-01-07
This book is part of the AppleCare training curriculum, designed to be a training manual for people who want to get certified by Apple to be an AppleCare-certified technician. As such, each chapter in the book is a Lesson. Early lessons cover topices such as "General Troubleshooting Theory," and "Safe Working Procedures and General Maintenance."
Lessons 5 through 10 cover common hardware and technologies, including basic computer theory , underlying technologies, liquid crystal displays (LCDs), cathode-ray tubes (CRTs), wired networking and wireless networking.
If you are a person who likes to do your own upgrading and maintenance of your Mac, you'll find this book very helpful. Likewise, if you want to make your living taking apart Macs and replacing parts as repair or upgrade.
This book does not cover Operating Systems. If you want to solve a problem in OS 9 or OS X, you need a different book. But, if you want to see the "Take-Aparts" for certain Mac models, including iMacs, iBooks, mini-towers and PowerBooks, this is for you. Both CRT-based and Flat-Panel based computers are covered.
There is a good section on how to search the AppleCare knowledge base, and doing advanced searches. They recommend you bookmark Apple Knowledge Base document 75178, as it gives good info on how to use keywords to search the Knowledge Base. And another section on locating Apple replacement parts.
The main reason this book has over 800 pages is the copious amount of photos. They support the step-by -step instructions for installing or replacing hard drives, optical drives, RAM, Airport Cards, etc.
I'm glad I got this book, as it will be useful when I want to upgrade the hard drive on our G4 flat-panel iMac and add a second hard drive to my G5 desktop.
Apple states in the beginning of the book, "Whether you are an experienced technician or someone who just wants to dig deep into a Macintosh, you'll find in-depth technical service information as well as a comprenhensive overview of the service tools and procedures used by AppleCare-certified technicians to diagnose, upgrade and maintain Macintosh computers."
Everything in one Book.......2004-11-27
Apple makes it very simple. If you are not certified by Apple and you do almost anything inside of an Apple computer and the warranty is void. This is the book that Apple uses in their certification classes for desktop and portable systems.
Apple has integrated their service effort and procedures together just as well as they did their hardware. So part of this manual is how to use their on-line service aids as well as the software tools that they have produced to aid the service technician.
There are some distinct advantages to Apple's approach of having one vendor for the whole system. The motherboards, for instance, are all designed around common design criteria, common interface structure, and specialized to operate with common software. Common service techniques are another advantage. Here in one book everything can be covered from wireless lan to displays to motherboards. Compared with the PC where everything might be from a different vendor, you only need one book. And for service, this is it.
Finally - Real Apple Certification Books!.......2004-07-06
This book (along with books for Apple Certified Help Desk Specialist, Apple Certified Technical Coordinator, and Apple Certified Systems Administrator) has been sorely needed for the past few years. The book is a big one -- chock full of well written information and excellent illustrations.
I suggest purchasing the $299 technical training kit from Apple as well as this book (the web materials, available through the kit, are referrenced often and are helpful during many exercises). All in all, good book if you want to become ACDT and/or ACPT.
Peachpit is releasing a book for the ACHDS at the end of July... and hopefully books for the ACTC and ACSA as well.

While many other novels are still nursing hangovers from the 20th century, The PowerBook has risen early to greet the challenge of the new millennium. Set in cyberspace, Jeanette Winterson's seventh novel (or eighth, if you count her disowned Boating for Beginners) travels with ease, casting the net of its love story over Paris, Capri, and London. Its interactive narrator, Ali, is a "language costumier" who will swathe your imagination in the clothes of transformation: all you have to do is decide whom you want to be. Ali--known also as Alix--is a virtual narrator in a networked world of e-writing. You are the reader, invited to inhabit the story--any story--you wish to be told. As in all the best video games, you can choose your location, your character, even the clothes you want to wear. Beware: you can enter and play, but you cannot determine the outcome.
Ali/x is a digital Orlando for the modern age, moving across time and through transmutations of identity, weaving her stories with "long lines of laptop DNA" and shaping herself to the reader's desire. She wants to make love as simple as a song, but even in cyberspace there is no love without pain. Ali/x offers a stranger on the other side of the screen the opportunity of freedom for one night. She falls in love with her beautiful stranger, and finds herself reinvented by her own story.
The PowerBook is rich with historical allegory and literary allusion. Winterson's dialogue crackles with humor, snappy dialogue, and good jokes, several of which are at her own expense. This is a world of disguise, boundary crossing, and emotional diversions that change the navigation of the plot of life. Strangely sprouting tulips are erected in place of the phallus. Husbands and wives are uncoupled. Lovers disappear in the night to escape from themselves. On the hard drive of The PowerBook are stored a variety of stories that the reader can download and open at will, complete stories that loop through the central narrative. The tale of Mallory's third expedition, the disinterring of the Roman Governor of London in Spitalfields Church, or the contemplation of "great and ruinous lovers" are capsules of narrative compression. In Winterson's compacted meaning, language becomes a character in its own right--it is one of the heroes of the novel.
"What I am seeking to do in my work is to make a form that answers to 21st-century needs," Winterson has written. The PowerBook does just that. Her prose has found a metaphor for its linguistic forms of creation that feels almost invented for her, "a web of coordinates that will change the world." There will be a virtual rush of Internet-themed books in the networked naughties. With The PowerBook Winterson has triumphantly gotten there first. --Rachel Holmes
Book Description
Adding to an already astounding body of work that explores the nature of love and desire, Jeanette Winterson (Sexing the Cherry, Oranges are Not the Only Fruit, The Passion) presents a stunning novel that probes the boundaries of the Internet.
Ali writes stories on email for anyone who wants them. She promises “freedom just for one night,” but she does not do so without a warning: the story might change you. Ask for an epic love story and you will get one, but Ali will be cast in it, too, and the lines between the real and imagined may blur. Plucking characters from history and myth, Winterson journeys through time and stops in London, Paris, and Capri, all the while melding the language of love with that of computers. In
The PowerBook she has found a brilliant conceit through which to showcase her increasingly bold voice.
Customer Reviews:
Not a book for the plot-driven reader.......2006-05-26
I found The Powerbook a beautifully written book. Winterson takes the subject of love and avoids every cliche', turning it into something fresh, lovely and "ruinous", as she puts it. It is at once mythological and modern, weaving between the two with almost flawless movement. Warning, it is NOT a plot-driven book, and seemed to me more like an extended prose poem than a novel. My only complaint was that I was less captivated by the modern love story in the novel than I was by the retelling of classic love stories. All in all, it is a beautiful, lyrical book filled with some of the most startling and vivid imagery I have read in a long time.
After repeated readings..........2005-04-13
Winterson's "The PowerBook" gets better and better. Potentially one of her more esoteric and theoretical works, "PowerBook" details the virtual experiences of Ali/x and her reader (you). I'll confess that I found it a bit overwhelming at first read, but nonetheless haunting enough to give it a second go. With each repeated reading, I've come to love "The PowerBook" more and more.
Winterson's classic style, with her musings on love, life, time and desire, is in top form here. The updating and modernizing of the medium allows for new insights into the "same old topics," as well as the chance to literally re-write the plots of the characters as needed.
Though not as easily accessible as "Written on the Body" or even "Oranges Aren't the Only Fruit," I think that "The PowerBook" does ultimately surpass both in its revelations and superb writing. If you've read it once and merely liked it, read it again to love it. If you're considering reading it, jump in; be prepared to savor it again if needed. It'll be a pleasure every time.
Type 11 Error.......2005-01-19
Sadly, I found this book to be mostly tedious, with irritating "literary" tendencies and repetition. Using the PowerBook theme, naming the chapters after recognizable phrases from the Macintosh user interface, is cute, but seems mostly to be a gimmick.
He found the shifting perspectives to be an aggravation, especially when executed for the apparent purpose of re-exploring the same events. As he got off the plane, he was not terribly disappointed to find that he had left the book in the seat pocket, despite the occasionally witty or thought-provoking ideas that could be found scattered throughout the text.
Beautiful, but a bit too abstract.......2004-07-01
I loved the writing, loved the romance, loved the passion, but couldn't quite deal with the abstraction of it all.
Gemful, but not to Winterson's usual abundance........2003-10-21
Ordinarily I would unequivically gush about anything Winterson. The premise is strong, the prose is moving, and the plot is convoluted in a distinctly Winterson manner. Ali, an on-line wordsmith, has an offer for you. "Freedom for one night" in the form of any story - you can be written into your own novella. Although I was engaged by the rapid succession of this nouveaux style story poem I couldn't help being a bit lost in all the jolting transitions. Winterson drops some real gems but this book left me exhausted and a little more bewildered than usual.
+: poetry, immagination, lots of movement
-: easy to be left behind, disjointed and lacking a strong common thread.

Wonderful resource.......2007-09-26
This book is a wonderful tool to help children who are adopted deal with questions they might encounter from friends and school mates. It gives children permission to reveal only as much as they want, and also lets them know that they can reveal different amounts of information to different people. I like that the book did not concentrate on proper adoption language. During the elementary years, even my own kids are not sure what "real" parents mean, and getting bogged down in trying to be proper ends up being more confusing than helpful.
It's a very easy to use guide, and I consider it a must-have for any adoptive family with school-age children.
I wish there were more like this.......2004-11-16
My eight year old loved this book. After reading this book this book with me, she asked me to please buy the whole series. I wish that there was a W.I.S.E UP series of books. I especially like the fact that the book is designed to be read with your child. The book encouraged my daughter to share her thoughts about adoption with me instead of hiding her feelings in her journal.
Great tool for empowering youth!.......2001-10-30
Children sometimes find themselves in awkward situations with their peers or even with insensitive adults, when issues of personal history arise. W.I.S.E. Up! provides the answer. This book teaches children (and their parents, too) how to manage intrusive questions about adoption and a child's background. Four types of responses, from walking away to educating the questioner, are presented for the child's consideration. Through role play and examples, it encourages the child to make his/her own decision about how to respond. It empowers them! A terrific book for children aged 6 to 16 !!
W.I.S.E. Up!.......2001-10-03
This is a great tool for parents and their children who are adopted. W.I.S.E. Up! is a book that helps children answer questions about adoption! I have worked in the adoption community for 3 years and haven't seen a more successful program. W.I.S.E. Up! empowers children that are adopted to handle any question about adoption.

Just what I needed.......2005-10-29
This is a cool little book that slips right into the carrying case for my iBook. There is so little out there in print for supporting iBooks and PowerBooks, and who wants to lug around a big book anyway. This portable little guide covers all of the basics and then some, and has already saved me hours of wasted time trying to set something up or troubleshoot a problem. (It's tough being one of only three or four students in the dorm with a Mac.) This is just what I needed.

Customer Reviews:
Did you just buy a new Powerbook? Is it your first? If so, buy this book........2006-01-23
At first glance, Powerbook Fan Book looks like a coffee table 'interest' book of diminutive size. The cover design and photo call to the Powerbook owner who enjoys reading about how great it is to be a Powerbook owner. But upon opening this book, It soon becomes apparent that it is a powerhouse primer for the Mac novice who just opened the box to their first Powerbook. The books dimensions are just larger than a CD jewel box. Obviously designed to be toted with the Powerbook itself.
Derrick explains his philosophy early on. Many Mac guide books on the market seem to lose focus of the fact that one of the major appeals of the Mac OS is it's ease of use. He feels that many of these user-guide tomes only serve to squelch the new Mac owner's enthusiasm; driving the owner farther from their new Mac in stead of uniting them. His solution is to gently introduce the machine and the OS; covering only the key information that a new user must know to become productive with their new Powerbook. He touches on the fact that being a Powerbook user is unlike being the owner of any Windows-based laptop. Much the same as being a Mac owner differs from being a `PC user'. Consider: Combine the Mac OS with the portability of the Powerbook, and it becomes, for many, an extension of their own memory; of themselves. Insights such as this pepper the book and keep the more dry nuts-and-bolts how-to topics in balance for the reader.
The book itself is logically organized, tabbed, and color illustrated. The early chapters cover the basics of Macintosh, the Powerbook and the abovementioned philosophies. Next Derrick assumes that you know nothing about the OS and guides you through setting up your new machine. All the while he interjects bits of wisdom that a veteran Mac user would recognize and appreciate (having themselves learned the hard way). He also covers `must have' Powerbook accessories, care and cleaning, and basically making your Powerbook uniquely `you'. All the main points are covered including the iLife suite and the Powerbook used as your personal digital hub.
The Powerbook Fan Book is destined to become a dog-eared, sticky note covered favorite that, after you have read it, will make the rounds to new Mac Powerbook converts as a loaner. My only criticism, as with any computer book, is that it is now in need of revision on two fronts. First, the book was written to the Mac OS 10.3 Panther user and needs to be brought up to speed for 10.4 Tiger; and second, Mr. Story will need to revise it for the new intel processor-based MacBook Pro. But there are plenty of new Powerbook owners out there and many retailers selling through their Powerbook back-stock. Apple could do worse than to commission this book to be shipped with each new unit.
One final note. There is nothing in the Powerbook Fan Book that would not also appeal to the iBook or now, MacBook (sans 'Pro') owner. Only some minor differences ,mostly to do with ports, would be off. So get out there and buy your copy!
once you go mac, you never go back.......2005-02-25
Theres alot of usefull info packed into this small book, focusing primarily on what ordinary users need to know,
it helped me bond with my powerbook.
Why?.......2005-01-09
I am not understanding the rave reviews of this book. It's VERY expensive, barely 100 pages, and it gives a very cursory overview mostly of mac OS X, not really rhe powerbook in particular. I read it in 45 minutes, and it was OK, but I don't think I got my money's worth.
Great book for first time owners.......2004-12-15
This is the book to go along with your first time purchase of a powerbook, or a good present for someone getting a new powerbook. You could think of this trim form factor book as a super introductory manual that should have come in the box. Though Derrick does a good job of covering some additional topics that you won't find in the Apple documentation, like where to get good accessories and third party software.
This is not a book for a long time Mac owner. That reader wouldn't find much they didn't already know. This is a great book for a first time Mac owner.
for a digital lifestyle.......2004-12-05
As the book says, using a PowerBook is a digital lifestyle statement to some of its fans. That might sound a trifle pretentious, if you don't have one of these gadgets. But Story describes bunches of cool ways to use it. These are in the key chapters 3 and 4.
He quickly describes the basics of using iPhoto to amass a collection of digital photos. And of using iMovies to view digital video. The chapters are somewhat short. There is enough detail to use the most common operations of these programs, and others. But the narrative only hints at the complexity of the full features of each program. The book provides a useful and quick survey.

Nice book if you have a pre-1992 notebook........1998-02-15
This book would only be of value to someone who owns a pre-1992 laptop Computer. Although the author does impart some usefull information, you would have to be a member of MENSA, and have a degree in electronics to make use of the book. Mr. Bigelow has done a tremendous service writing this book, unfortunetly, it is of little use to the average user. Too bad, too, because this a subject in dire need of more Information. If you work on computers Like I do, it might be a good idea to have a copy around for reference.
