Book Description
An atelier program between the covers of a book
* Serious techniques for the serious art student
* Study the work of the Old Masters and today's top realist artists
* In the tradition of Watson-Guptill's classic Drawing Lessons from the Old Masters
Ateliers have produced the greatest artists of all time--and now that educational model is experiencing a renaissance. These studios, a return to classical art training, are based on the nineteenth-century model of teaching artists by pairing them with a master artist over a period of years. Students begin by copying masterworks, then gradually progress to painting as their skills develop. Classical Drawing Atelier is an atelier in a book--and the master is Juliette Aristides, a classically trained artist. On every page, Aristides uses the works of works of Old Masters and today's most respected realist artists to demonstrate and teach the principles of realist drawing and painting, taking students step by step through the learning curve yet allowing them to work at their own pace. Unique and inspiring, Classical Drawing Atelier is a serious art course for serious art students.

A solid collection of a good technique.......2007-10-05
While most of the material is very elaborately done in this book. She's far from achieving photo-realism. There are a few drawings in there that are obviously idealized. If you want a more realistic aproach to drawing, you may want to sumply go with some of the old masters books.
On an up note, her idealization is very well done, but she really should stick to whats there and possibly work a bit more on the subtle details that would push her to photo-realism.
You can learn to draw very well from this book. The techniques he proposes are sound. The one thing lacking is that this is not the end all be all book of drawing books. There are others out there that surpass this book.
Drawing in depth.......2007-10-03
This is a deep book, a kind of survey of essential drawing topics for the artist student, beginning or advanced. My impression is that Ms. Aristides covers the curriculum of her Atelier, explaining the theory behind the practices and learning accomplished there. At any rate, what she discusses she treats thoroughly and thoughtfully with valuable insights. For instance, I have read a number of excellent books on drawing, but hers is the first that defined for me the different meanings contained in straight lines verses curved lines. For me, a key insight. So I think the true value of this book, in addition to spelling out what her students do and learn, is the key artistic wisdom Ms. Aristides shares out of her experience and expert skills.
inspirational .......2007-09-29
This book explains how the skill of making classical art is tought from master to pupil(s) in the style the old masters did.
The photos of the drawings and exercises are very inspirational. In the end of the book there are several do it yourself exercises. But one who reads the book is aware of how to improve his or her artist skill in a thorough way simply by reading what miss Aristides has to say.
Excellent.......2007-08-16
A wealth of knowledge, experience and fortitude has gone into the development of this artists' essential guide to the attainment of high art.
The crucial need of the artist to configure the subject correctly is aspired to in this book, and the pictures are superb. The methods used to obtain high standard preliminary (and necessary) rendering of the subject is covered in this book and is really a valuable guide to anyone considering joining an atelier program prior to their commencement.
As well it is valuable for anyone wanting to appreciate how perfection is obtained- albeit the 'truth' of art.
An excellent resource and Julitte Aristides lengthy career has gone into its' making.
I can wait for her Classical Painting book also to be published reportedly some time later in 2007.
Poor photorealist deception.......2007-08-07
Yet another opportunist example of the terribly rampant photorealism today which has nothing to do with classical art. The authors work and premise is a joke in its attempt to connect later 19th C. methods with Classical ones. Photo realism began in the 2nd half of the 19th C. with gimick methods such as the Barge, mentioned in the book. (ther's a reason why they look like black & white photo negatives). Its all a scam and while artists like Bouguereau, who sometimes painted from photos, actually had some legitimate classical training (eroding quickly in his time), the fact is no one today does because it doesn't exist. The cast drawing section in particular is totaly incorrect because proper, classical drawing prior to the mid 19th C., has to do with delineating and emphasizing form not throwing a light on something and copying the shadows with pretty, airbrush-like, rendering techniques - this in turn produces paintings that look like poster illustration. Artists following these methods while claiming their relattionship to classical training are ignorant quacks - they all follow this system because its easy to do and teach but they have unfortuanely decieved themselves as well as their students. Most all academy collections of casts today are of terrible, diluted quality anyways. Students would do much better by studying museum sculptures and the "form drawings" displayed in "Michelangelo Drawings" by Hugo chapman, I believe found here on Amazon. You'll clearly see that's he's focusing on 3-D design and structure - drawing "through" forms, not merely doing external renderings. I'm a painter tryng to study the LOST art of classical drawing/painting and want to help set the record straight.
Book Description

This large and formidable Italian guard dog is currently enjoying a Renaissance in the new century as a recognized pure-bred dog, attracting many new fanciers every year. Not the dog for the inexperienced or the faint of heart, the Cane Corso is a strong-minded and strong-bodied protection dog, naturally suspicious of strangers and devoutly attached to his owners.
This Special Rare-Breed Edition, the only book of its kind about this fascinating Italian Mastiff, offers an insightful history of the breed, an in-depth look at the breed's characteristics and standard as well as puppy selection and rearing, obedience training and housebreaking, and health care and maintenance. In addition to an authoritative, comprehensive text, this book presents over 135 photographs in full color, which prove to be as informative as they are attractive.

A very good breed book.......2007-10-10
This book on the Cane Corso dog is filled with interesting and helpful information. Much of the information is specific to this breed. Lots of pictures are included as well. I recommend it. Mary
cane corso.......2007-05-12
this is the only book on this breed i can find. Very informative.
Wonderful dog, wonderful book..........2007-04-29
I love this breed and this book had all the information of the history, care, and behavior of the Cane Corso. It also had a puppy section if you need to know about puppy care. Amazon had the estimated date of delivery 2 months away (and no, it was not because it had not been released)...but I got the book in about a week and a half.
Cane Corso.......2007-01-20
It was so nice to find a book about the Cane Corso. We just purchased one in November and I wanted to get my boyfriend a nice book about the rare breed and this was the only one that I could find. There are a lot of nice photos in the book as well. I'm hoping to find just a picture book of them also. I guess I'll keep looking.
Great Book, Lots of Info.......2005-08-06
I recently came to know of this breed through (...) and decided that I wanted to learn more about the breed before making my decision to get a puppy. I spent hours searching the net for info, and I eventually found this book. As far as I know this is the only book on the breed in English so for those wanting to learn more and don't speak or read Italian this book is priceless! It gives a great overview of the breed, useful information about the history, training, taking care of it, and a very extensive section on the breed standard. It covers some of the key points like the importance of socialization, and potential pitfalls if you do not socialize. This book looks nice and has many great pictures, and even a place in the back to place a picture of your puppy, and basic information about your dog. This is the second book I have from the Kennel Club series; both are very professional and informative. This book is worth the price for anyone considering this breed and for any one who already has a Corso. After reading this book I made my final decision to get the breed.

This fascinating book is a valuable guide for farmers and the general public concerned about the overuse of nonnatural medicine, herbicides, and insecticides in farm management and animal husbandry. The author, Juliette de Baïracli Levy, offers detailed directions for treating all farm animals with natural methods, while stating her evidence that "mechanized" farming methods have led to the demise of domesticated animals' overall health. She asserts that poor and inadequate natural habitat, unnatural feeding practices, and a reliance on medicine to fight individual symptoms of disease without addressing the whole animal have weakened farm animals' innate disease-fighting ability. Her argument for a return to reliance on the natural and away from the synthetic and artificial rearing and feeding methods of farm animals becomes more urgent and relevant given the outbreaks of "mad cow disease" and other ailments caused by these practices. This book, used in conjunction with proper consultation with a veterinarian, can help animal owners and farmers move back to natural and healthy farming practices. --Julia King

Indispensable book for natural/organic livestock raising.......2007-09-29
We raise our animals naturlaly/organically. We had been searching for a book that would help us with our animals in such a way medically, if needed. A friend of ours, who has been doing what we're doing for decades, highly recommended this book, telling us it would become our farm "bible". After reading just a few pages of this, we quickly realized what she meant, and we have been reading from it and using it ever since. It is very clearly written, easy to understand, and a joy to use. The author gives a wonderful history of herbal medicines in a farm/livestock setting. She clearly explains how to prepare the herbs (in tinctures, poultices, etc.) for the animals. She breaks it down for the different animals as well. This book is a joy to own-- we're very pleased with our purchase.
A must have for every farm.......2006-03-14
THis book is a great resource for anyone who wants to keep their animals healthy. Prevention is the best medicine, and this gives all the best prevention tips you could need. Your cattle, horses, sheep, goats, poultry and sheep dogs will thank you for purchasing this book.
This book has already paid for it'sself on my farm
If you own goats, own this book.......2003-07-31
I am a goat farmer for many years now. I have bought many books on goats, veterinary manuals, and so on, but this book is the first one I turn to for animal ailments. Natural rearing methods produce better and healthier kids than any other method. I bought one doe kid who was so ill with a disease that affected her brain that I was going to put her out of her misery--- it was too late for a vet to do any good. With the herbal treatments in this book, the goat recovered and lived over a year in good health.
Herbs are the best!.......2002-03-14
I have used this book for years and it has done wonders for my animals. It difinitely saved lives of animals the vet had given up on.The information is specific, with easy to understand instructions for preparation of herbs and what/when/why of their use.
Too much ranting.......2000-04-26
There may be some useful knowledge in here, but I was completely turned off by the author's...theories (she doesn't believe germs can cause disease, for example) and ranting against modern veterinary medicine and farming practices.

Brilliant for companion animal care........2007-05-16
This book is terrific. It provides a general guide to companion animal care (In a natural way ofcourse), and then lists ailments and accompanying herbal remedies. Easy to use, easy to understand. Suitable for practitioners and animal lovers. If you have a pet then you should buy this book.
Herbal Handbook.......2006-08-19
Well this book is mainly only for the use for dogs. I was thinking it's be more like a herbal/ailment glossary. You know, about what's wrong with your pet and what herb to use for it. It does have that in the book but very little and it's got more literature in it than I had wanted.
the complete herbal book for the cat and dog. .......2006-02-19
This book is an excellent source of almost forgotten and useful information. I am constantly going back to reread sections and have bought it for my farming, animal loving daughters.
good overall idea, BUT..........2006-01-30
First I will give the author due credit for her general ideas on natural rearing, caution of over-vaccination, recommendation of a natural raw diet and advice to provide plenty of exercise, sunshine and love.
With that said, some of her suggestions are iffy at best:
The suggestion to not spay and neuter is very ignorant. Overpopulation in dogs and cats leads to euthanasia, homeless pets, pets with bad homes because they were given away to anybody, etc, etc. There is no side effect of spaying and neutering that even comes close to being as harmful to our pets as the side effects of overpopulation.
The author recommends burying meat in the backyard as a healthful alternative to freezing.
She recommends feeding grains with the raw bones, so that the grains can protect the stomach/intestines from any sharp bone fragments. To expect that to work is just silly, and dogs do not need grains in their diets.
She recommends feeding dried fruits, specifically including raisins, but raisins are toxic to dogs!
She recommends red raspberry leaf for pregnant females but this has been scientifically proven to cause a higher fetal mortality rate, and it induces uterine contractions which is not always a good thing.
She does have some good advice, but I wouldn't blindly trust all of the information contained in this book. Natural rearing is best for your dog, but definitely do your own research and make your own informed decisions.
A thankful reader.......2005-10-22
I had bought two of Juliette's herbal books for cats and dogs when I read another book by a different author who had recommended Juliette's books specifically. One of our cats had developed a strange problem where his fur ceased to grow in a large area on his left flank. The spot started out small but gradually grew large and larger until a spot several inches in diameter was mostly fur-less on our cat. Our vet ran a number a tests which came up negative and we even ran tests twice. Our vet said he didn't know the cause of the problem. We had our cat for years and he is an indoor cat fed typical dry cat food (Whiskas), as are all our kitties, and we also give our cats canned tuna fish frequently, as well as chicken breast, turkey breast and beef occasionally. We didn't think his problem could be diet-related. Our other cats are very healthy and our vet even remarked on their coats saying they were the most beautiful he had seen. We tried some things the vet suggested, including giving our cat vitamin E supplements and even cod liver oil but nothing helped the problem and it just seemed to get worse over several months. I searched around the internet trying to find informataion on a possible cause of his condition but found nothing really. I thought perhaps his problem could be a thyroid condition. When I consulted Juliette's book, she recommended seaweed, garlic or raw egg yolks for thyroid problems. As I already had eggs in the house, I decided to try those first. I mixed raw egg yolk into my cat's tuna fish and fed that to him on several days and then we noticed that his fur looked like it was growing back. I worried about feeding him too much egg yolks as I didn't want him getting too much cholesterol so I ceased feeding the egg yolk after about a week but his fur continued to grow back until it was all the way grown back and he seems fine now. I'm thankful this book helped us find a way to help our cat. It was worth the price of the book just for the help with that one problem, though I will continue to consult the book in future if my cats need any more treatment for any future ailments. Juliette seems very knowledgeable about natural and herbal remedies. I bought her book "Common Herbs for Natural Health" and used some of her recommended treatments on myself as well with very good results.

libertine philosophy and a lot more.......2007-01-09
well i got this book at a very cheap price along with other 2 classic titles (one by h.g. wells and the other by oscar wilde) and you can call me illiterate or whatever but this was the only book that kept me intrested enought to finish in less than a week.
this is my first by this author and i started reading with an open mind, as the one who had sumarized the book sugested. and ihave to say i loved it from start to beginning. not because of all the gore and porn, which was ok i guess but what i liked the most was how behind every libertine character's philosophy, is the idealism of the author, and those words are totally true and captivating.
sade's philosohpy of life, a bit exagerated in this book; is admirable for the faithfulness it has to human's needs and drives and to sum it all.. if you want a bit of all that you should read this book.
i recommend it
Marquis is a God.......2006-07-22
The god of Evil, the Marquis has stunning words that are absolutely beautiful, simultaneously the epitome of disgust. I worship his literary genius.
Ever Heard of Satire?.......2006-05-03
The Marquis de Sade was not evil and he was not a genius. Inspite of the flights of fancy he takes in his very disturbing fiction, he was not an advocate of cruelty. He opposed the violence of the revolution as vehemently as he did that of the old aristocracy. He was a definite pervert, but there is very little evidence that he ever hurt anyone in his life. Unlike most French aristocrats of the late 18th century, who forced themselves on defenseless peasants, Sade preferred to find consenting partners, which turned out to be a big mistake because their families got wind of it, felt that their honor had been stained, and had him sent to prison on charges which are patently ludicrous.
I find Sade's writings boring and impossible to stomach, but he was no more a predatory monster than he was a transcendent genius. He was a writer of historical novels and plays that nobody reads anymore and are largely unavailable in English, and he is mostly remembered for writing down sexual fantasies that became increasingly disturbing during nearly 30 years of undeserved imprisonment. Even in his more disturbing works, what the reader has to remember is that these books are social satires and philosophical parodies. I would not normally feel obliged to write a review defending the Marquis DeSade, but after reading 21 reviews in a row that all seem to miss the satirical and parodic qualities of JULIETTE, I could no longer hold my peace. Juliette, a woman of lowly origins who rises to the top through debauchery and violence, is Sade's savagely satiric portrayal of the masses, whom he supported in the revolution in spite of his aristocratic background, and who then went on to be every bit as brutal as the old regime they overthrew. Just because Sade's characters advocate cruelty, that doesn't mean they are all mouthpieces for the author.
DeSade's philosophy is pretty simplistic, I believe laughably so, which is why I read him more as philosophical parody than as philosophy. He doesn't have a very coherent point. As hard as he tries to portray Juliette's absurdly virtuous sister Justine as weak, his libertines cannot really defeat her, and the author ends up having to do away with her through a "divine" intervention every bit as contrived as those in the corniest of medieval morality plays. This raises a level of ambiguity that I haven't heard many readers deal with. It is just as easy to read JULIETTE as a parody of libertinism as a libertine treatise. In fact, given the amount of repetitious libertine treatises filling the bookstores of 18th century France, I found it hard to believe Sades pornographic writings were not intended at least partially to spoof their ridiculous excess. I feel kind of like reading DeSade today is like someone 200 years from now watching SCARY MOVIE without ever having watched a horror movie.
People who do get DeSade's satire sometimes praise it to excess, comparing him to Rabelais and Swift. For me Sade's satire is lame because satire needs to make its point hard and fast and then shut up. DeSade rambles on for thousands of pages, killing whatever humor is there and burying it under mountains of onanistic fantasies that are as repetitious as... well... as what they are.
In addition to aristocracy and religion, one of the main targets of Sade's parody was Enlightenment philosophy. He takes from hardline medieval Catholicism the idea that nature is evil and combines it with the Enlightenment idea that we should always follow nature. These two philosophies were not meant to be combined in this way. The former presupposes that we must work to curb our natures and the latter presupposes that nature is good. Combining the two ideas in the totally bizarre, disjointed way DeSade does could have made for a good satire on the scale of Swift's A MODEST PROPOSAL, but it never occurred to Swift to go on for four thousand pages retelling the same joke, as Sade does throughout his various pornogrophic writings--which, for the record, only make up a fraction of his surviving literary output.
a woman's pursuit of the libertine lifestyle.......2004-05-25
As a work of pornography, "Juliette" can certainly hold its own. But as literature, it doesn't compare to "Justine" which is a much better written novel. Regardless, people looking for Sadeian erotica will find it here, as well as Sade's philosophy. I was surprised and pleased by the amount of lesbianism in this book, something one would not expect from an author who has always been described as a bisexual interested in male sodomy. But in late works like "Juliette" he seems to have acquired a taste for lesbian sex, or at least an understanding of it's popular appeal as erotica, and this is evident in this book as well as surviving notes from his "The Days of Florville", a mammoth pornographic work and perhaps Sade's masterpiece, which he wrote in his last days at the asylum in Charenton and which was ordered to be burned by his son after Sade's death.
"Juliette" is a long novel, covering the story and fate of Juliette, the virtuous Justine's libertine sister, and her sexual and criminal adventures out in the real world.

The mind of an evil genius!.......2003-07-23
Vicente Munoz Puelles's The Arch of Desire was an excellent referral to Marquis de Sade's work. This exquisitely dark novel about the workings of an evil genius's mind enthralled me. No sooner did I start reading this book than it consumed me until its final pages.
Various arresting matters are brought on in Juliette, and they all mix erotica with dark messages that somehow sound logical. Marquis de Sade states that doing evil leads to personal fulfillment. He relies upon the success of various political dictators and powerful people with no scruples to illustrate his opinion. Also, he assures the reader that acting upon the most taboo subjects - murder, atheism, incest, rape, hatred - will free you from all inhibitions. In other words, crime, not truth, shall set one free. He illustrates the aforementioned horrid details from a young woman's vantage point. Juliette is quite a character.
Marquis de Sade was one of the best, albeit underrated, literary authors out there. His work is just as, if not more, controversial than Nietzsche, and he possessed the same sort of disarming genius. This novel's content is not to be agreed upon, but for sheer intellectual stimulation it can't be beaten. I look forward to reading more of his work, especially Justine - the counterpoint of Juliette - with utmost anticipation.
Book Description
What could make a smart woman ignore doctor's orders?
What could get a hardworking employee fired from her job?
What could get a black woman in hot water with her white boyfriend?
In a word...
HAIR.
When does a few ounces feel like a few tons? When a doctor advises a black woman to start an exercise program and she wonders how she can do it without breaking a sweat. When an employer fires her for wearing a cultural hairstyle that's "unprofessional," and she has to go to court to plead for her job. When she's with her man, and the moment she's supposed to let loose, she stops to secure her head scarf so he doesn't disturb the 'do.
TENDERHEADED?
Yes, definitely. All black women are, in one way or another.
The issue is not only about looking good, but about feeling adequate in a society where the beauty standards are unobtainable for most women. Tenderheaded boldly throws open the closet where black women's skeletons have been threatening to burst down the door. In poems, essays, cartoons, photos, and excerpts from novels and plays, women and men speak to the meaning hair has for them, and for society. In an intimate letter, A'Leila Perry Bundles pays tribute to her great-grandmother, hair-care pioneer Madam C.J. Walker, who launched a generation of African-American businesswomen. Corporate consultant Cherilyn "Liv" Wright interviews men and women on the hilarious ways they handle "the hair issue" between the sheets. Art historian Henry John Drewal explores how hairstyles, in Yoruba culture, indicate spiritual destiny, and activist Angela Davis questions how her message of revolution got reduced to a hairstyle.
Tenderheaded is as rich and diverse as the children of the African diaspora. With works by Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, bell hooks, Henry Louis Gates Jr., and other writers of passion, persuasion, and humor -- this is sure to be one of the most talked-about books of the year.

Multiple Viewpoints.......2006-08-15
This is a wonderful book for anyone who would like to explore the issues that Black women face vis a vis our hair from a variety of viewpoints; not just the "politicaly correct" ones.
For sombody wanting to look deeper into Black hair..........2006-07-09
The book was all that, very positive, and at times emotional (I'm thinking of the passage where a father is trying to figure out how to braid his daughter's hair since her mother is across the country. His trying, and eventually getting it right, turned into bonding sessions for them. It was beautiful.) Of course the book had my favorite culture critic, bell hooks, and as usual she gave me a new persepective: to look at the whole "perm" phenomena as initiation into womanhood. Just about any Black woman who was on the brink of adolescence and was dying to get a perm should relate to that. I did. That's what this book does, it helps Black women to see just how similar our trials have been with our hair; and it's not just a generational thing. Black women from 50 to 80 years ago had the same issues and thoughts Black teenagers have today. Everyone remembers hot combs and Goody pink rollers and Royal Crown grease. Looking back many women had feelings of remembered pain, and not just from the burns on the tips of their ears and on their scalps, but inside their hearts for our collective struggle with an unattainable beauty standard.
What I also admired about this book was that it touched on the subject of hair and erotic intimacy. There was a whole section devoted to hearing the responses of Black women and men when confronted with the bedroom question: Can I run my fingers through your hair? It showed a depraved relation to our hair. In order to get and keep that salon fresh look, sleek and shiny, it must not be touched (by you and most especially your lover). Hair does not bring pleasure in the sense of us luxuriating in how it feels. How can you when it's not even yours? Weave. A woman tells the story of a young man with whom she was getting intimate with, and he wanted to run his fingers through her seemingly long shiny tresses. The moment was interrupted when he felt the hard tracks on her scalp before she could effectively slap his touch away. "You have to train these men early," another woman admonishes, "not to touch the hair." A man married for over 20 years complains of his wife's hair roller pins always poking him when she's "going down on him." He also hates, but has gotten used to, her wearing a head scarf anytime they make love. It is described in the book as Black folks having perpetual menege trios, he, she, and the head scarf. Another man wakes up to his girlfriend's "100% Korean Hair" all over the bed and floor after an especially heated night; he later ends up paying $200 dollars to have it all put back in again. The women speak of not even wanting to touch their own hair, refering to it being "hard as a rock" from gels and hair sprays. It's all in the name of a certain look, the processed one. (It's this look that lured their mates in the first place right?) It's sad that Black women talk about orchestrating certain sex positions around not messing up their fresh 'do. "You don't even think about it after while." They compensate not allowing their men to touch their hair with confidence and boldness in their performance, "It's so good he won't even be thinking about touching my hair."
I love this book. It isn't just politics or just us behind closed doors. Every possible reference to what is done to our hair is mentioned, even going bald. A Muslim woman opened my eyes to how not showing her hair takes away from having to compete for attentions based on beauty standards of hair, by being above them. It reminds us that as women, we shouldn't let physical beauty define us, even though most times it does, and we let it. "Ms. Strand" tells her tale with humor, cultural criticism, African storytelling, and 'round tha way truthfulness, barring nothing from the conversation. Truly, Tenderheaded should not be passed over.
Disappointing.......2005-01-06
I expected to really enjoy this book, but was disappointed. Some of the stories/essays were very good, but some of them were poorly written and/or could have done with some serious editing. It might have been better if some of them had been omitted: the book would probably have been half as long, but the overall quality would have been significantly improved.
I was also disappointed by the way the book was laid out. It seemed jumbled and poorly conceived. Photos, illustrations and cartoons/comics were seemingly thrown in randomly, with little context or relation to the surrounding content. The graphic content of the book was good, but the layout just did not display it to full advantage.
The idea behind this book was a good one, but the execution could have been a little bit better.
worth reading.......2004-06-22
very good, worth reading, written by various people.....
enjoyable,gets you thinking,nice photographs too.
As you may or may not know African coyly hair is quite unique in vision, texture, behaviour and probably in chemical make up too. Coily haired women around the world, go to the most extremes in terms of spending.
(Spending time, spending pain and the spending price to have African coily hair styled)
A hairstyle that we believe looks good or will help us to become socially and economically advanced.
Or maybe for our own self-esteem and maybe to attract the charms of a love interest. Either way your hair is a reflection of the state of your consciousness, your internal beliefs and your relationship with the world.
This book is like having group therapy or interviewing other women, but it is not all black women's views.I am reviewng it because I think it is worth a read.

What about exploring physics through african hair?
For example how much pressure, gravity and tension and tearing do we put our hair through by combing it?
let alone excessive harsh combing.
Mathematically speaking how many of you readers can tell me how many curls/coils per inch your hair has, and does it vary in coil and moisture?
Next question:When does the nature of the hair change and why?
(i know it does!)
It seems to me all these books on afro hair are good and I welcome it, but we still need to be more informed and they all seem to need better editing, just like Black American beauty magazines.I must campaign for better grammar and less air brushed photos!!!
It is as if we like to see ourselves falsely rather than the reality of what we are...
Black women need to demand more scientific reasoning from our books and be less competitive over black men which only fuels their egos and as a result probably creates more baby-mothers!!!
Sorry but I had to vent out my opinions.
I give this book four stars for the effort and time invested as a writer I know it takes time...
I maintain that it is still worth reading, more than any carcinogenic chemical so called hair treatment that you pay for.
Anyway what do I know I am a black african british woman!!!!
Most of you Americans think we in Britain have no trains or any kind of progressive development!!!
Anyway if I wrote my book answering my questions that I put to you how many of you would buy it?
All That You Want To Know.......2004-02-28
This is a very unique book. I have to say I LOVED IT! My being a young black woman, all the stories hit close to home. This book gave a non-bias look at black women's hair, and black culture all around the world including here in America. It gave many view points, from men women, blacks and even whites. I recommed this book to anyone who is confused about their hair and themselves. Nappy is defiantly Happy!!!! Peace.

Charming, Informative Herbal.......2007-07-24
One must first note this herbal was first published in the U.K. You gotta love the older herbals written before the over-inflated danger warnings, suppressions of the medical society and fears of legal action. Yes, herbs are medicine, but also food. With a little guidance and a lot of common sense & caution, herb use can safely serve many. Lots of great info on 200+ herbs with a simplistic approach to use, charms the reader to say "Encore"! Suffice to say, "I'm a pleased purchaser".
Fabulous Herbal Guide........2007-05-16
This book is easy to read, easy to understand and covers many herbal remedies. Designed for the practitioner and the home-user. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in herbal medicine.
5 stars easy.......2006-07-12
This author is The Matriarch of Herbalism among the inner
circle, which includes well known practicing herbalists,
"celebrity" herbalists, other authors, and many thousands
of community herbalists all over the world.
My 30 year old copy- my very first herb book -
is falling apart so I just ordered another because it
contains a lifetime of tried and true herbal information
for personal and professional practice. Anyone starting
out in their understanding of this field, as well as
anyone who has been studying for years, should have this,
and all her books, on their shelves, and use them! If
you do, you will "get it".
This book is recommended to educate and enlighten those
who have been brainwashed by the media to think "herbs
are drugs", or poisons, or worse- as it clears up issues
of practical usage, and proper usage, and everyday
applications, by someone with decades of experience ,
well respected the world over. It contains useful, full
descriptions of many common herbs (the "materia medica"),
some not so common, some , in older versions, which may
have fallen out of use or access. A story emerges of herbal
use all over the planet for health care, and along with
this information, the author shares her insights into
incorporating natural living to promote robust health
and vitality.
No fads here- just classical, timeless, tried and true,
unchanging , eternally helpful enlightenment.

MyShelf.com Book Reviewer.......2002-10-16
I was astonished at the vast amount of invaluable information I found in the pages of COMMONS HERBS FOR NATURAL HEALTH (Herbals of Our Foremothers) by Juliette de Bairacli Levy. Readers will be rewarded by a detailed listing of 200 worldwide herbs. You will learn how to find them, store them, and prepare them to help treat many common ailments. Don't be surprised if the recipes contained in the back of the book will have you searching your yard late at night for the intriguing ingredients.
This book is a must-read for any herbalist enthusiast, or anyone who has a slight interest in alternative medicine. I can easily see this book being passed on from generation to generation; the information is priceless. After reading this treasure, it fully convinced me to change the topic of my college thesis. I'm happy to say I couldn't have read any better book to start me on the path of learning this ancient tradition.

It is all about what you do with it.......2006-11-20
I appreciated this book very much. I recommend this book to someone who will appreciate going to the basics and questioning their own stereotypes for beauty care.
I bought this book years ago, and now I am looking to buy it again after having misplaced it during my last relocation. I am 33 years old, and look younger than my age, people tell me, to begin with. I believe in prevention so I bought this book to slow down the appearance of wrinkles. I believe that I am slowing it down thanks to this book even though I only applied 1/4th of all the advice in this book. I think that if I applied more of it, I would see even a stronger effect than I do now. It is all about what I do with it. That's why I want to buy it again, to cover the other 3/4ths.
I find this book the most comprehensive, written with a profound understanding of the matter at hand. I learned about WHY and HOW, not just about WHAT. Some of the exercises are difficult to implement but when I learned to make them I felt that my facial muscles toned up very soon.
As a result from reading this book I became more conscious of my posture, and I've improved it tremendously. People complement me on my straight posture. I do believe that even without a trace of a wrinkle poor posture makes one look older. I became very conscious of my facial expressions, and thus avoid wrinkle-producing movements that I did not know I did before. I use natural oils, instead of creams, a lot, and my skin tone has improved. I learned how to remove make up and massage my face without stretching the skin, which is another wrinkle-producing factor. I look forward to learning more of it.
Not Worth Your Money.......2005-10-17
I also am wondering if all the positive reviews are legitimate. I went to the bookstore to check it out & found the book to be fairly useless. Lots of text & needless exercises for the body. The few exercises listed for the face had unclear photos that are not very helpful. I say save your money or you might be very disappointed.
Why are all the reviewers named Charlotte?.......2004-08-26
I am in the market for a book on this topic, but too many of these reviews seem faked up -- multiple reviews by Charlotte from London; exact same wording submitted under different names. At this point, I don't care if the book is any good or not -- your overkill has cost you a sale.
For men too!.......2003-07-29
Perhaps unusual for a guy to worry about ageing but my wife had bought Juliette Kando's NATURAL FACELIFT and when she was out one day I had a look at it. I have a twin brother and when he asked me how I managed to look so much younger than him I confessed that I had been doing the exercises in Juliette Kando's NATURAL FACELIFT. Now he bought the book as well and he said that he really enjoyed reading it and doing the exercises. It makes you look younger feel happier. In hindsight it could not be otherwise since the movements Kando advocates are all designed to tone up the muscles in the face and give you a more youthfull and positive expression. Double chins and ugly bags just dissappeared. It is a wonderful way to stay fit in the face.
very helpful.......2003-07-29
Yes! At last a book that makes some sense. The author is right in saying that you can't hang a beautiful picture on a decaying wall and gives some valuable advice on posture before introducing the facial exercises. I found that the exercises made a lot of sense and were well explained and illustrated and easy to follow. My friends have said that I look better since I have been doing them. It's certainly cheaper and healthier than facila surgery and the results are more natural.

Textbook reading.......2007-05-14
Caters a little more to the medical-related professions and interests (rather than fitness/health-related industries) but still highly educational and relatively easy reading.
