Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

The Cat in the Hat says, "We can have all kinds of fun that is funny!"--and proceeds to prove it in his inimitable style. Inspired by many of the best-loved Dr. Seuss classics, including The Cat in the Hat, One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish, and There's a Wocket in My Pocket!, this giant flap book is guaranteed to flip out even the unflappable. Giggling readers can lift more than 70 flaps to find such distinguished characters as Zeds, Findows, and Lollipop-Licking Lions. Learning to count is a piece of cake when every numbered flap reveals surprises such as nine wet pets or six sick bricks. But wait, there's more! Flip the flaps to discover that the cow says "moo" and the bumblebee says "buzz buzz." Red Rhinoceros starts with the letter r and Camel on the Ceiling starts with c. The opposite of old is new, and the opposite of sad is glad. So go ahead, put this book in your bookcase--unless the banana-munching Nook Gase gets there first. In that case, try the cupboard--drats! The Nupboards beat you to it! Wherever it goes, the Great Big Flap Book is sure to entertain and educate. (Ages 3 to 7) --Emilie Coulter

5 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT.......2007-01-05

As a Dr. Seuss fan from far too many years ago, I absolutely love the book. Nice big easy flaps to open and bright colors along with Seuss' best lines.

5 out of 5 stars All Kids should have this one!!.......2003-01-02

All kids should have this book, there is no doubt in my mind. I wish all children's books were this well- crafted. And if you're a teacher, don't even dream about missing this one. Also nice to add to your collection are: Aesop for Children (Winter), Grimm's complete fairy tales (Grimm), Great Children's stories (Richardson), The Butterfly (Singh). There are many other great children's books out there, but these were the ones I enjoyed the most. Oh, and I almost forgot the two classics that no children should ever be deprived of: The Little Prince (Exupery) and Charlotte's Web (White).

5 out of 5 stars Flapping Great Benefits and Value from Five Dr. Seuss Books!.......2001-03-09

This book is probably the best value and choice for children under 3 among the Dr. Seuss offerings. This book draws on five of the best Dr. Seuss books for young learners in abridged and more interactive fashion to make it exciting and interesting to very young children.

You get basic counting, letter identification, prereading training, introduction to rhyming, and the alphabet all in one fun book with great flaps that the smallest fingers will lovingly turn open. Any child can get a great educational start on important basics here, and graduate to working with the complete five books to provide this information in more depth.

The first two page spread is from The Cat in the Hat and covers all the numbers up to 20. Each flap has a number of Seussian animals or objects behind it. The order of the numbers is scrambled across the two pages so your child can also learn to look for numbers in order, as a way of reinforcing counting skills.

The second two page spread is from Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You? The child is encouraged to make the appropriate animal sounds. These sounds are printed out, and this spread provides experience and skill in letter and word identification, and oral reading.

The third two page spread is from There's a Wocket in My Pocket! This section is good for beginning readers because the animals behind the flapped items rhyme with the flapped items (like wocket and pocket). Your child can then learn a few sounds for consonants by seeing and hearing how changing one letter changes the sound and meaning of the whole word. With the clue of the flap item, this section also helps with basic word decoding.

The fourth two page spread is from One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish. This section features a full rhyming scheme. "From there to here, from here to there, funny things are everywhere." This rhyming futher reinforces letter identification to help with word decoding. By making this section easier to memorize, your child may well start to "read" this section to you before the other ones.

The fifth two-page spread is from Dr. Seuss's ABC and has all 26 letters in it. Again, they are not in exact order, so your child can also learn the alphabetic order by working with this. The Cat in the Hat returns as the host for this adventure. Having had so many examples of the importance of letter identification in the immediately prior three sections, this is a good place to introduce the whole alphabet.

Most children will probably want to do this book from front to back every time. That may seem like a lot for you to read with them, but the learning experience is very good that way. I urge you to follow through with that approach if your child likes it. With over 70 flaps to turn over, there's plenty of interactivity to keep boredom at bay.

If you find your child is doing much better on some sections than others, you might move onto the rest of that book at that point. Most children will find some material easier than others. Since this is all somewhat related, you can build on strengths that way to help open up any minor blocks to learning that you may be seeing.

Flap away!

5 out of 5 stars The Flaps are the Focus.......2000-12-13

Although advertised for the toddler and preschool set, my son adored this book even at 9 months old. He is now one year old and is by no means tired of it. He can stay on one page for at least fifteen minutes flipping the flaps open and closing them again. I imagine that when he is old enough to understand letters and numbers and opposites he will still be as engrossed with it. I think the good size of the book and the very colorful illustrations add to the appeal.

5 out of 5 stars THE ULTIMATE DR. SEUSS BOOK! THIS ONE'S ALL YOU NEED!.......2000-09-25

My daughter absolutely adores this book! It takes all the things that make Dr. Seuss so GREAT without all the long, tongue-twisting stories for parents to read! I PROMISE you will like this AS MUCH or MORE than your child does! There are so many flaps it keeps my daugher entertained for up to 30 minutes at a time--THAT is AMAZING! No other book we own can do that!

The first 2 pages are from THE CAT IN THE HAT (counting); pages 3 and 4 are from MR BROWN CAN MOO! CAN YOU? (animals); the 5th and 6th pages are from THERE'S A WOCKET IN MY POCKET! (fun creatures lurking about); the next 2 pages are from ONE FISH, TWO FISH, RED FISH, BLUE FISH (opposites); and the last two pages are from DR. SEUSS'S ABC. All the bright colors not only make the book visually appealing but serve as yet another training tool!

Lift-the-flaps is the rage these days because most books I think are so hard for children to turn the pages but the flaps are small like their hands and fingers! PERFECT, PERFECT, PERFECT! 10 STARS! THE CAT IN THE HATS' GREAT BIG FLAP BOOK is a MUST OWN! You will not be disappointed! Trust me!

Book Description

For young children, moving to a new home presents a unique set of challenges. While older children grasp the concept of permanent change, preschoolers may not until they have been in their new surroundings for several days or weeks. They experience a move on a very sensory level, reacting to changes in sights, smells, sounds, and climate. And while they may not be leaving a school or friends, they are leaving a familiar community and routines that must be rebuilt in their new environment.

Big Ernie's New Home gently affirms the normal sadness, anger, and anxiety that young children feel after a move. And as Big Ernie gradually discovers familiar comforts and exciting adventures in his new home, young readers may be encouraged to do the same in theirs.

In an extensive Note to Parents, Dr. Jane Annunziata discusses the feelings that young children face when moving and offers a wealth of suggestions for smoothing their adjustment.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic in Every Sense.......2006-08-25

Teresa and Whitney Martin have given parents a book that is not only an artistic masterpiece, but a wonderful teaching tool. The writing is simple and direct, but has a subtely of humor and detail that makes the characters come alive and delivers a strong emotional impact.

As for the illustrations, I can't say enough about the vivid, painterly style, the exciting compositions, and the characters that jump off the page. This is illustration that melds painting and storytelling in a unique and classic way. No child, or parent, should miss it!!!

5 out of 5 stars Sooo funny!.......2007-10-02

I think I had bought this book at hot topic or somewhere that sells those types of things. I just happened to spot it and it instantly caught my eye. I was laughing in my head when I saw the title, and it continued on when I read it. This is a great book, of course not necessarily for kids, especially if they have parents that are gonna burn it as soon as they bring it home! (unless you have that nice little nook in the wall or floor board to hide it in....) I especially liked the end, with the nine lives and all, can't get a break I guess. And the cat chow they gave him! What was it, beefy beef chunky chewy chunks of beef or something, lolz! Great gift for Halloween, people with a morbid sense of humor (some say I can be like that at times ;) or just a gift for any occasion really, for those you might think would enjoy it.

4 out of 5 stars Super quick read, in the style/tone of Invader Zim.......2007-06-15

I'm a huge Invader Zim fan, so I decided to pick this book up. It is a very short book; it took me about ten minutes to read it cover to cover. If you're considering this book for a kid, it does have a little bit of adult-ish content, specifically:

* Comic book style masked obscenity (e.g., %#@^!&)
* Cat birthing (admittedly, the part where the reader is asked to contemplate the "crotch" that brought the large headed cat into the world may go over the head of kids that haven't gotten to that part of the birds and bees discussion)
* Mild gross-out humor, including cartoonish autopsy in the second story

It depends on the kid; that's all I'm trying to say. It's probably a little more mature than Invader Zim, but nowhere near a PG-13 rating...and there's nothing in here that a kid wouldn't see (in a less humorous form) on the Discovery Channel.

Overall, the story was amusing in the off-kilter way that this author tends to write. If you liked Zim, you'll likely enjoy this.

4 out of 5 stars Not for the cat lover on your gift list.......2007-01-16

First, very very funny book in a errilly twisted kind of way.

Second, do not get this as a gift for someone who loves cats.

4 out of 5 stars short but good.......2007-01-12

its very short but its a good read, i got it for my little sister she likes the artist who draw this.

5 out of 5 stars The Cat with a Really Big Head-but the other story is hilarious too!.......2005-08-16

This book is so worth having-I kept it on the coffee table and re-read it for weeks. The pictures are hilarious and the story at the end about the little dead girl following the pathologist was creepy but very funny!

    Book Description

Big Cats opens with "Charlotte," in which a young girl with a broken pelvis spies on her voluptuous neighbor during a long, hot summer night, setting the tone of irrepressible curiosity and yearning that is evident throughout the collection. In "Get Away from Me, David," a bank manager tries to overcome his haunted past as he deals with the aftermath of a minor earthquake and the body of a customer who died in the lobby. "Big Cats" pits two teenage girls against each other in an escalating catfight at the zoo where they work, culminating in a blowout in front of the lion cage.

1 out of 5 stars How Did This Get Published.......2007-02-25

This is the worst book I ever started to read. I read a few - very few - chapters and then threw it in the trash. I am sorry I purchased it. For some reason it was chosen as a book of the month by my book club. I hope this author does not write any more books and if she does I hope some publisher has the intellegience not to publish it!!! It is sad that someone is walking around with that much trash in their brain and then worse that that someone lets it out.

5 out of 5 stars So many worlds!.......2007-01-26

My life has suddenly become crowded with all these wonderful and interesting people. I am so grateful to Ms. Reinhorn for taking me on this devastating roller coaster ride in such a wealth of wisdom and love and exquisite wordcraft.
We have been on such adventures together! Her narrative voice is the most clearly and honestly human I have ever read, vaulting high above many who grovel in the vileness of being in an effort to reach her level of honesty. What amazes me again and again is the genderless strength, delicacy, nuance, rawness, humor, ache and triumph in each story. One character, a pregnant woman, read so much like a man half way through that I had to check to see if I were reading the same story. Then, having been in that same "delicate condition", I gloried in that truth of our existence: strength and reality know no gender!
I am breathless, but not speechless as I sing the praises of this book from friend to friend. I may even have to collar a few strangers on the street.

4 out of 5 stars Fun, unpretentious short stories..........2005-10-11

The stories in Big Cats are few of the most fun, entertaining ones I have read in quite a while. They have an irresistible mixture of dry humor and earnest storytelling. The best part of all is that neither the author nor her work of short fiction comes across as pretentious or contrived. Holiday Reinhorn writes with an unique voice that keeps you turning the pages. The characters in this collection are quirky and struck me as lonely and with very mundane, human qualities that make them all the more compelling. They are not perfect, but they are wonderfully readable nevertheless. My favorite stories are "Get Away from Me, David," "F--- You," "White Dog," and "My Name." If you're a big fan of short fiction, Big Cats is one short-story collection that you'd want to read. I cannot recommend this gem enough.

    1 out of 5 stars I couldn't wait to finish it...............2005-09-26

I couldn't wait to finish this book and I don't mean that in a good way. This was my book club's selection for the month and it was one of the worst books I have read in a long time. Pointless and depressing short stories. It seems as though the author is just trying too hard to come across as cynical and irreverent.
Save your money there are a lot better collections of modern short stories out there.

4 out of 5 stars Delivers its promise.......2005-09-01

I loved the cover featuring a leopard half body shaped in female curves and coupled with the author's lovely name, this was indeed a tempting book which delivered its hidden promise.
This collection of short stories deals with outbursts of emotions. Feelings that have been bottled up under the surface and find a moment to explode, in many different ways. Reinhorn describes a host of characters, each one is a whole entity, a round character full of different angels and many inner wounds. The stories are all disturbing in this way or another and each one can be dealt with and analyzed in detail. This, by the way, is some of my frustration with such a rich book of short stories. Each story is a world of its own. I felt it is hard to read more then one story in a sitting as they are so strong, vivid and full.
In "F--- you", a woman in some kind of personal distress that is only hinted upon picks a young boy of the road, acting, as "she should" in normal motherly situations. But somehow, although her behavior starts as seemingly appropriate, the situation turns to be awkward when she finds herself outbursting in front of this boy in her back yard pool. She now has an audience to turn her frustrations against. Although the woman does not do anything really harmful, we feel her behavior deteriorating and her way of speech seems totally out of place. This story is quite uncomfortable to the reader as many of the "not do" rules of conduct are broken and you get a picture of a woman on the edge.
"Big Cats" gives us a minute-by-minute detail of an escalation of the relationship between two teenaged girls. As the story develops we learn that each one has her reasons to team up with the other. One needs the audience and the other is drawn to the (seeming) strength the other is projecting. Once the roles seem to slightly change, hell breaks loose and they end up in a catfight in front of the lion's cage. Here is a moment of revelation for one of the girls, the narrator.
Another story, "Heights", is a story of a young woman living with her flirtatious mother and a stroke-ridden father. A very heavy feeling clings to this story, same as the two former stories; something, is clearly not right. This is not a regular, "cultured" behavior. The situation spread in front of our eyes is very disturbing, and reaches a climax again, with an outburst.
"White Dog" is the story of a woman knowing the days of her white dog are numbered. The story describes the role of the white dog in her life in what we understand to be a replacement of a child, and maybe even a replacement of a real connection with a male partner. I understand this as a story of alienation - there are hardly any names in the story. We have the woman, the white dog, the photographer or ex husband - only the Japanese drummer is sometimes referred to as "Ohici" and the fact that he receives a name can be further analyzed. It seems that the woman is sufficient directing all her love to the dog and therefore does not need to build any real relationship. The reader cannot understand what went wrong with Ohici or with her ex husband as they seem close even today, and the waste of it all is quite hard to take.
However I guess that the story I liked best in this collection is "By the time you get this" since the outburst of emotions in this story is so touching it can not leave you indifferent. Although told by a grieving mother, mourning and analyzing herself and the death of her daughter, the story is really about her connection with her maid, Lydia who is the center of the story. The maid is the real link to the dead daughter and parting with her will be parting again from the girl. The bond between the narrator and her maid is described slowly. From the beginning we understand that this is not a regular maid and that parts have been slightly changed here. The maid is the one who is in charge and she is the one who understands that she must end the unhealthy connection with her boss. The love of the narrator to Lydia and her son and their importance in her life is the center of this story and I found it to be special in many ways. The narrator is a very educated woman, whereas Lydia is a very simple person. However, the narrator finds herself drawn to Lydia's world and lets her lead the way, at least for a while.
The stories depict all of modern age problems and difficulties. They deal with people of different places and status, all suffering from very deep wounds. The stories are told with a loving eye for all people and all of human flaws.
My only comment would be that these are not always people that are easy to identify with and usually, I , as a reader, look for characters who are closer to myself or characters that are able to evoke some kind of sympathy or identification. Most of Reinhorn characters are not like that. Reinhorn deals with people who are on the extreme and most of our lives are really in between, not high and not low. All endings do not give a solution but sort of encapsulate a certain situation. On the other hand there is nothing soapy or unreal here, as painful as the stories are.

5 out of 5 stars A Witty Ditty for the Ages.......2007-05-13

    What an awesome book!
The illustrations are beautiful and just chock full of witty and whimsical themes. Did anyone notice the Broadway stars and the radio personalities?
The theme is timeless (country/city; boy meets girl) but the story seems fresh. Like a good country song about "the dirty sidewalks of Broadway", Ms. Johansen Newman captures the spirit of the city and the dreamers who populate it.
    A beautiful book!

    5 out of 5 stars Tex and Sugar - A Charming Book.......2007-04-10

Barbara Johansen Newman has illustrated several children's books, but this is her first as both author and illustrator.

I definitely recommend this book. The truth is, I can't believe the price for the quality of the book. It's gorgeous and very well-put together.

The writing flows in a very fun way! The verse rhymes, which I think makes it even more fun to read, especially with your children. The illustrations are a delight!! With rich, saturated color, the art is highly detailed yet has a very down-home, folk-art feel, which really adds to the mood of the story. The characters are very cute and sweet. The story itself is one we can ALL relate to - having a dream, not giving up on it, and the importance of friendship.

I have to mention the overall design of this book - it's gorgeous. The cover is full rich color, with red foil detailing on the "Tex and Sugar" signage, which really adds additional pop to the cover - that was a decision that paid off well! There are some very thoughtful design elements throughout the book - namely the lassos, which show up in the design proper, as well being utilized as a 'frame' around some of the illustrations - which adds visual interest and helps break up the illustrations in an interesting thematic way. It's obvious that a lot of thought and planning went into every aspect of this book.

All in all, a highly enjoyable book that really is "the whole package". I'm actually keeping this on my living room side table. It's such a fun book, you want to show it off.

    5 out of 5 stars Pretty Kitty!.......2003-03-02

This picaresque novella will soften the hardest heart. When a mother cat leads her kittens into the barnyard sunshine, one kitten lingers behind and thus begins her adventures. She takes a walk with a mole through the countryside and the two hap upon a frog whose enormous mouth sends them into gales of laughter. A shaggy puppy then offers to lead the kitten home but not before he busies himself yapping at a squirrel who drops a nut on his nose! Home at last, the kitten joins a barnyard picnic but a bee-stung frog causes a stir and everyone dives into the brook for safety! It isn't long though before merriment is restored. 'This was the best day ever!' the little kitten exclaims. Tenggren's illustrations are lovely and most pleasing. A memorable tale and one the reader will return to time and again.

5 out of 5 stars the Shy Little Kitten.......2001-04-12

The classic and amazing tale of a shy little kitten and her adventures with a puppy, a frog, and her fellow kittenly beings. Not for the faint of heart.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Lions,and Tigers.......2006-12-05

I like Lord of the Kill because it is a bit scary but is a good book for animal lovers. I think this a good book for older kids because of blood and violence. It has only one bad in the book. If you dont like horror stories you would not like this book. It has a good ending for the characters it has a bad biginning. If you get scared easy you might want to think twice.

    5 out of 5 stars My Review.......2006-05-24

Lord of the Kill is a very well put together book. Theodore Taylor uses a lot of description of what is happening and you can put together a picture in your mind of what is going on. Taylor sends his readers inside the book and it feels as if you are there living out the story. He uses problems that may not seem like they are around today and tries to play along those lines as an animal-rights family and fights for what they believe. Taylor probably intended you to feel what is happening to the characters, especially Ben, and try to relate to him. Most parents leave to go out of town or on vacation and leave their kids to look after the house so in some form most young adults can relate to Ben. Ben takes on the challenge of finding his lost tiger, as most young adults would take on any challenge they may face while alone or have parents out of town. Taylor uses emotions to help enhance what the characters are feeling which helps grab your attention. Adults can relate to other characters like the other employees trying to help Ben manage to preserve, most adults have helped someone else in one way or another.
The ideal audience for Lord of the Kill is definitely for young adults and is well suited for it, they like to read books that have younger main characters in an adventure to stick up for something they believe in. If adventure is your kind of genre then Lord of the Kill would fit your needs.

4 out of 5 stars For All Readers Looking for Suspense.......2006-05-18

Sick and tired of the fake mystery investigations we so often see on television? If the answer is yes, then try reading Lord of the Kill by Theodore Taylor. This book shows the reader what it is like to understand the real crimes from a witness's point of view. Lord of the Kill is the sequel to Sniper, in which both books share the same protagonist: Benjamin Jepson. Ben is a sixteen-year-old male, and even though he is not the brightest in school, he does comprehend quite a bit about the cats at his father's preserve. Ben's dream in life is to someday own the "Los Coyotes Big Cat Preserve" just as his father does now. It seems as if Ben will receive his first test in running the preserve while his parents are in India writing a story for the "National Geographic". Unfortunate for Ben, the preserve has multiple, capable enemies willing to ruin it. This is due to his father's strong opinions against poaching the big cats or any other animal.

Trouble arises when a half-eaten body is found in the cage of two "dangerous" jaguars. Because of the animals' mysterious ways, people outside of the preserve are usually quite afraid of the jaguars and give them nicknames such as "Killer". Without the jaguar mystery solved, General Dmitri Zukov-Ben's favorite Siberian tiger weighing over 800 pounds and having a total length of thirteen feet-is kidnapped! No matter how bizarre it may seem to steal a tiger, Ben realizes he must act quickly if he wishes to see his friend alive ever again. This mystery book's main theme is love, especially shown from Ben. The boy's heart may need to lead him to the most dangerous and important moment of his life. Theodore Taylor's chapters and formatting reminded me of the way Herman Melville separated his chapters in Moby Dick-sweet and short, right to the point. Mr. Taylor of course used many flashbacks because the book is a mystery. And in a mystery, the reader solely learns things when they come into play or when the author finds a necessary time to include such information.

Theodore Taylor has written more than 50 fiction and non-fiction books for young-adult readers. I will probably find myself reading another one of Mr. Taylor's books because overall, I thought Lord of the Kill to be very exciting. Readers must remember not all mysteries can be solved and to be prepared for the numerous unexpected twists and turns. While reading, I took notes on the characters because otherwise a gigantic assortment of questions would have appeared towards the end of the book. I felt worried and frantic in most parts. Any person who believes in justice for animals or takes delight in a well-written mystery would certainly enjoy this book. In the end, we seldom know what may lurk behind the corner. All we can do is rely on our judgment to lead us to the solution of our problems.

5 out of 5 stars Killing Animals to make medicine.......2006-01-24

A half eaten girl is found and locked up in a jaguar cage.
It was a girl from the streets of China Town it was a message from the Triads.
Lord of the Kill by Theodore Taylor is about a kid named Ben who has a tiger preserve to run, he is 18 years old and his parents are somewhere in a jungle in India. Triads are threat the preserve because Ben's father told the Hong Kong police about the shipment of animal medicine that animals were killed to make the medicine.
The book is a good vs. bad book. That one side is trying to save exotic animals and the other is killing animals for medicine.
Ben is scared so he caries a colt. Ben has been getting messages from the Triads that they are threatening him because of Ben's dad that he told the Hong Kong police about the shipment of medicine mad from animals.
I feel bad that Ben has to deal with a big problem. That Ben has lots of problems to deal with. For example: his parents are in a jungle lost and hasn't heard from them.
The writing is very mysteries that there are lots of mysteries. An example is there is a body in a cage with the jaguars.
I recommend this book to people that like mysteries books.

    1 out of 5 stars horrible writing.......2005-04-11

What a disappointment! Sniper is my favorite book by Theodore Taylor; in it, 15-year-old Ben Jepson is left in charge of his parents' big cat preserve while his parents visit Africa. Then his parents disappear and someone begins shooting the cats. It's a thrilling story that holds up to re-reading; my copy is in tatters. However, this book reads less like a sequel and more like a re-write of the first book. In it, 16-year-old Ben is left in charge of his parents' big cat preserve while his parents visit India. Then his parents disappear and someone begins causing trouble for the preserve. It's not a thrilling story this time around, and Taylor introduces too many new characters (such as the secretary) who weren't in the first book, while leaving out characters (such as Ben's girlfriend) who should be in the second book. Plus, Ben is 16--why is he entering his senior year of high school? Plus, half of the book is printed in italics for no apparent reason, except to annoy the reader. Skip this one. It wasn't even worth the $1.25 I spent on it.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful little charmer.......2005-12-30

Another favorite of my 3 1/2 year-old daughter, along with "Top Cat" by the same author. Hmmm...is it possible that Top Cat or his little brother is the cat in "Feathers for Lunch"?

That aside, the pictures in this wonderful book allow a child a good first look at several North American birds, and the text introduces your child to their birdsong. All the birds are "drawn" (I believe they are actually designed by paper cut), to actual life-size.

5 out of 5 stars Great bird book.......2004-06-23

This is a wonderful little book for children to learn some common American birds and their calls. The story is about a cat trying to catch a bird for lunch but the bell on the collar keeps giving him away, hence "feathers for lunch" but the illustrations are almost all birds such as the Northern Cardinal, Blue Jay, Morning Dove, House Wren, Northern Flicker, etc... My little boy actually likes Ehlert's "Top Cat" better, but this story has seen many readings. My boy can tell the difference between several birds that he sees in his backyard. Recommended for the little birders.

    5 out of 5 stars Terrific Book.......2004-05-30

This book, along with TOP CAT by the same author, are my kids' favorite books (ages 6,4 and 2). And I love them, too! I never tire of reading them out loud, although both of my older children can recite the book and "read" it themselves now. We checked it out from the library and kept renewing it over and over because the kids loved it so much. We finally bought our own copy and I know the kids are going to fight over who gets to take it with them when they move out 15 or so years from now. :) It is a delightful story and I love how Ms. Ehlert labels everything. I especially like the details provided at the end regarding the birds shown throughout the book.

5 out of 5 stars Continues to be a favorite.......2004-05-29

Entertaining, colorful, informative --- what's not to like? I have to admit, however, that I feel sorry for the cat.

    5 out of 5 stars A must-have for young children.......1998-03-30

This wonderful book was the first favorite book of both my children; now the 5-year-old chants along from memory when the 18-month-old demands her daily reading(s). My only complaint about Feathers for Lunch is that it isn't available in a board book form--ours is held together with tape!
