I've read a lot of break up books since my break up. This book was helpful, but not sure if it actually helped me? Anyway, I found 2 sites...one for girls and for guys that ended up helping me because of the support groups. brokenheartedgirl.com and brokenheartedguy.com. Sometimes you need to talk to people and they also recommend other books.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-02-26

The book was really helpful on overcoming my breakup. The book has really good information in it. The best information that I have found yet. In my opinion I highly recomend this book to anyone who is going through divorce or a breakup of any kind.
Thank you.

It covers most of the major themes dealing with loss. It reads a bit slow and some parts are not interesting. Rebuilding is significantly better book.

1 out of 5 stars secular vs spiritual.......2005-06-07

If you are a spiritual person this is NOT the book for you!!! Some suggestions include casual sex, smoking pot, acting as if you are someone else, wearing clevage showing clothes, putting Hustler and Playboy on the coffee table, watching Deep Throat, whispering "I feel like I'm being raped" in your lover's ear, you get the picture ! I found myself laughing out loud. They can't be serious. Get yourself a book on meditation instead !!!

2 out of 5 stars This is just terrible........2005-01-31

I suffered a break up exactly one week ago and was in the bookstore searching for some solace. I looked through this book and I am sorry to say it made me feel worse than I do right now, if that's even possible.

The book does an excellent job relating to how you feel after a terrible breakup--after the first week of course, I am pretty miserable--but besides that, the strategies offered are really awful and could possibly set you back. Among the bad ideas throughout the book:

(1) Call your ex. Excuse me?? I need to make a clean break here and get on with my life, not risk the possibility of being re-rejected or offered some false hopes.
(2) Go out and have sex. It should be self-explanatory why this one is not helpful.
(3) Have an "implosion" ceremony, where you take out ALL the remaining mementos of your ex (that you should have carefully saved, according to these authors), and surround yourself with them while you watch old home videos and/or listen to the songs you had together. Spend the entire day in mourning and don't do anything to improve your mood. Follow this day with a celebration of the ending of the relationship.
(4) An extensive checklist in the beginning of the book that labels your symptoms as "compulsive," "hysterical," "depressive" and other words that make you feel like you've really lost your mind.

Perhaps this book could be helpful, but ideas like these should best be carried out with the supervision of a therapist.

Book Description

It is estimated that one out of five persons in the United States experiences at least one episode of hives in their lifetime. That is approximately sixty million people in the U.S., almost twice the population of California. Even if the actual number is over-estimated by fifty percent because of inaccurate diagnosis, thirty million remains an impressive number. Approximately five to ten percent of these patients may experience symptoms from six weeks up to two years or longer. This suggests that 1.5 to 3 million individuals in the U.S experience chronic hives.

There is a paucity of materials to assist health care professionals (HCP) and patients on these conditions. There is in fact no existing publication, past or present, that provides the practical approach discussed in this book for the evaluation and treatment of these conditions. The book will appeal to patients who are desirous of a self-help approach and to HCPs who need time-saving guidance to organize and standardize the evaluation of these conditions.

Many of the common questions that are asked by patients are answered in this book. It is our experience that addressing the following questions allays anxiety that patients experience and will improve their understanding as to why their symptoms are sometimes not diagnosed or brought under control.
•What are urticaria and angioedema?
•Why is it difficult to find the cause of urticaria and/or angioedema?
•Is there a common mechanism that causes urticaria and/or angioedema?
•Why do urticaria and/or angioedema remain only for a short time in some individuals, while other patients experience symptoms for longer periods, sometimes months or years?
•Can the duration of symptoms be predicted for chronic urticaria and/or angioedema?
•Why aren't antihistamines completely effective in treating urticaria and/or angioedema?
•How can you determine whether a food, food additives, dyes, preservatives, or undetected allergens are causing urticaria and/or angioedema?
•Do psychological factors play a role in causing urticaria and/or angioedema?

This book is very different than existing medical textbooks as it distills the information from a variety of scientific sources to a level that is understandable for patients and for health care professionals, who may not be familiar with these complex conditions.

This book provides time saving tools to gather information efficiently from patients. Key sections may be reproduced for use with multiple patients. The book organizes and standardizes the evaluation and treatment process and encourages a cooperative approach between HCPs and patients that improves outcomes. It can be used by:

•Health care professionals (HCPs) who can advise their patients to complete a workbook section. Based upon the workbook information, the HCPs can utilize a numeric algorithm to guide them to discussion(s) of possible diagnostic possibilities, laboratory test considerations and treatment recommendations. •Patients, who believe they have hives or swelling, can complete the workbook section. This is shared with the health care professional, who can use the information to consider diagnostic possibilities, laboratory considerations and treatment recommendations.

5 out of 5 stars Hives: The Road to Diagnosis and Treatment of Urticaria.......2006-08-30

Urticaria hives have plagued me for nearly 3 years. Many visits to a Dermatologist and an Allergist plus numerous blood work-ups have not been of any help. Dr. Wanderer's book "Hives: The Road to Diagnosis and Treatment of Urticaria" has been very beneficial in my understanding of Urticaria and has shown me what steps to take in an attempt to pinpoint the cause. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has Urticaria. It may not help you find the cause but it will help you understand what you are faced with. It is my belief that this book should be recommended by all Doctors to people with Urticaria.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully validating and great reference material!.......2006-07-07

I have been a chronic urticaria sufferer for 5 1/2 years and have been on Prednisone for the last 4 1/2 years. My doctor ordered the book after my recommendation and we are using it together to try new medications and therapies. Thank you Dr. Wanderer!

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful for a CU sufferer like myself.......2005-12-15

Should have gotten this book way before wasting so much time, energy, fraustration, and money on all the different doctors/medications/injections...etc. it is too bad Dr. Wanderer is not in Los Angeles otherwise I would love to see him also refer him to others

5 out of 5 stars A must have for Chronic Urticaria sufferers.......2004-03-16

This is a terrific book that answers many questions for chronic urticaria sufferers. I wish I had found it sooner. I'm only on my first year of CU, but I really like to use this book as a reference for all the information scattered over the Internet. I brought it to show my allergist/immunologist and he had ordered it too.

5 out of 5 stars Understanding Hives.......2004-02-25

I have been battling hives for several months. Dr. Wanderer was the third Dr. I encountered in an attempt to rid myself of this problem. On my first visit with Dr. Wanderer, he recommended a thorough series of testing to try and determine the cause of my outbreak of hives. During our interview time, it was apparent to Dr. Wanderer that I was in need of information on my illness. He suggested I read a book that he had written on the diagnosis and treatment of hives. I would encourage anyone who might have a bout with hives to get this book! It has helped me immensely with the understanding of the illness and more importantly, the diagnosis and treatments. I am still in treatment but I'm doing better and I've stayed the course of treatment ONLY because I have the book to go to for guidance and understanding. I'm hopeful of a positive outcome for my illness now because I have this book for reference. I would not have progressed to this point of recovery if not for the book Dr. Wanderer has published for us! It has given me strength daily!

Pig boy has status envy and the horn.

So, not thinking he can do a princess he goes off instead, and has some magical animal stuff happen again, this time, in the form of a cow. The useful crow also happens along.

A bit of training is also had by said pig boy in the art of magical weapon wielding. Magic potions, friend saving and wizard waxing are also to be found here.

5 out of 5 stars Very pleased with Taran Wanderer.......2007-01-16

This book is probably my favorite of all the Prydain Chronicles . . . It's maybe not as intense as some of the others are, but I love how Taran travels around and meets so many interesting characters and learns to view life differently by seeing how they live and view their own lives. It's just a very fascinating journey, one that I'd like to take again and again. A Journey that I'd like to share with my friends and family. . . And someday, my own children.

5 out of 5 stars A SWEET READ!!!.......2007-01-12

Taran Wanderer, is the third book of the Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander. So far this is the best one of the series. The first two book were great, but this is even better. The main character, a boy named Taran, is looking for the truth and he learns that the truth can play with you. It's a very unusual book, you won't find many like this.

Taran Wanderer is an amazing fantasy adventure book. It's got magic, enchantment, a few funny parts, and suspense. It has a grumpy dwarf named Doli. Doli is the kind of person who always turns up at the exact right moment. Taran is an adventurous boy who tries to gather wisdom and friends wherever he can find them. He goes on several quests. My favorite part is chapter eight, when Taran meets the magician, Morda. It's scary and has an unusual ending.

I read this book in less than a week. It just took me captive! I don't want to give away the plot, because I don't want to spoil it. You should read it for yourself. I can't wait to read the next book in the series, The High King.

4 out of 5 stars Taran Wanderer.......2005-05-17

This was a good book. But the begining was not very good. It was basicly about going from kingdom to kingdom. The main charcter is Taran. He is a very interesting charcter. He starts on a quest to find his parantage. And he goes through mountains, castles, swamps and even caves. The biggest conflict comes into place when he meets Dorath. Dorath is a meen charcter who is part of a group of "hired swords". He treis to convince Taran to hire them but he doesnt so he becomes a enemy of Taran. He challenges Taran for his sword and a few other items that dont matter. But he wins and take sthe sword for his own. Taran has a grudge on him until he fights him again and defeats him by breaking his sword. Taran also faces a wizard who turned his freinfd Dolly in to a frog. Taran defeats the wizard and he turns Dolly back into a dwarf.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Story of Courage,Friendship and the Search for Truth.......2004-09-18

Taran Wanderer was not given the Newbery Award like it's successor The High King; nor was it awarded a Newbery Honor medal such as it's predecessor The Black Cauldron. However, Taran Wanderer is the most complete book in the Chronicles of Prydain. Lloyd Alexander deftly tells the tale of Taran's quest to find his parentage in hopes of being decendant from noble blood. Gurgi, Taran's faithful sidekick journeys with him through far off parts of Prydain. Along the way, old friends and faces reappear such as Fflewwder Fflamm the bard/king, Doli of the fair folk, Kaw his hijinxing bird, Llyan the giant cat who Fflewwder now rides as his mount and King Smoit whose army rescued Taran and his companions at the end of The Black Cauldron. Taran's journey to find himself takes him to a number of different trades such as metallurgy, weaving, farming and pottery. He also meets his fair share of adventure and enchantment along the way. At 254 pages Taran Wanderer is the longest book in the series but it reads the fastest because there is so much action and uncertainty in what Taran will finally find out about himself. The Chronicles of Prydain still stand as some of the greatest fantasy stories ever written and Taran Wanderer is the BEST book in the Chronicles of Prydain. Highest Recommendation.

A WANDERER'S HANDBOOK is a reference manual for spiritual outsiders: people who feel they may be ETs or who feel they are isolated in their spiritual journey. It explores the alienation that sets such seekers apart, the varieties of the pain of living, the healing of the incarnation, the discovery of the life's mission, and how to live a devotional life in a busy world.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars wow, Just what I needed!.......2007-03-30

This book was just what I needed, if you're a wanderer or think you might be this is an excellent companion!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful sequel to the Ra material.......2003-02-26

I loved this book....The author is Carla, the woman who was the channel for the entity known as RA of the series "The Ra Material" published in the mid-eighties.

RA used the term "wanderers" to describe beings of a higher dimension/density that have chosen to incarnate as human beings and to join the last reaincarnational cycle ( 25,000 or more years) in service to humanity in order to help with the ascension/harvest process.

Ra stated that often wanderers had problems that were specific to them. Carla has dedicated much of her life to explore the wanderer phenomenon as well as being of service to them. In this book are years of her observations, extract from channelings from the Ra material, from the Qu'o group, extracts of letters and experiences of other wanderers on a variety of topics: spiritual growth, cosmology, health and even sex! Carla shares of many personal aspects of her life and of the lives of the other two memebrs of L/L research Don and Jim, with a candour and honesty that makes this book a real treat.

To see that someone as evolved as Carla, privilidged to have been the channel for some of the most profound channelled matearial ever, and for her to let us know that she too has struggled with her humaness is a precious gift for us all. I am truly grateful for this book. If you have enjoyed the Ra material you will love this book.

5 out of 5 stars A Metaphysical Masterpiece.......2001-11-19

A Wanderer's Handbook, by Carla Rueckert, is simply one of the best metaphysical books ever written. Using carefully sequenced quotations from the non-physical entities she channels, Carla combines the personal, human experience of being on her path with the brilliant, beautifully worded, and exquisitely wise words of her spiritual contacts. Every important facet of the spiritual quest, experienced within the amnesia-cloaked physical lifetime--including the frustrations, failures, and heartaches--is fully developed in this terrific book. This book is simple enough to be studied by beginners, while at the same time being one of the most advanced books even put into print on the spiritual quest.

5 out of 5 stars An invaluable reference.......2001-09-25

Many thanks to Mr. Ferguson for his succinct comments above. I would agree whole-heartedly with his review--particularly in regard to non-judgment. I have found no "thou shalt" statements in this book; only an above-board sharing of channeled service-to-others material, experiences of other spiritual seekers and some biblical references, with commentary by an articulate and obviously loving author.

"A Wanderer's Handbook" is arranged intelligently, allowing the reader to approach it in a variety of ways. One does not need to read from front to back, but may turn directly to pertinent chapters or simply i-ching. Also worthy of note is a glossary provided in the back for those terms a new seeker might find puzzling.

The path of spiritual seeking often feels like a lonely one, strewn with challenges and frustrations. The pure quality of non-judgment here, paired with the heartfelt honesty of the author and her contributors, creates a deep warmth in the book... an assurance of not being alone on this journey. I've found it to be an invaluable reference, both in day-to-day application and in times of emotional/spiritual pain.

A fabulous book that has never found its way to my shelf... it resides always on my coffee table, within easy reach.

5 out of 5 stars A wanderers review.......2001-09-18

Finally, a manual for spiritual seekers who don't want religious doctrine or New Age guru ramblings. The Wanderer's Handbook is a collective effort of not only the author's experience, but also the experiences and wisdom of many spiritual seekers. Also included are many channelled messages of very highly advanced service-to-others sources, including Ra (for those who are familiar with the Ra Material).

What's nice about the material is you can skip to chapters or topics that are of the most interest to you. Just about any spiritual challenge you can think of is handled in a thorough, non-judgemental way. There is no preaching that you should be this or that particular way. We all make mistakes and have challenges that may not have clear cut answers. This book acknowledges this aspect in us all, and gives suggested ways and ideas in working through a spiritual path.

Whether you are just starting a spiritual path or have been on the journey a long time, or just feel like a spiritual outsider, this book is for you. From metaphysical work -to relationship and society issues -in the various positive and negative forms are covered with equal candor. Nothing is sugar coated, including self doubt, as well as the ills of society, and our own individual role in the world. Ultimately, the benefits and simple joys of being a wanderer are expressed in a common sense way that virtually anyone can relate to.

In short, this is a truly excellent, as well as, enlightening book that I can pick up and read anytime...and find something of value every time.

Prolific children's book author Bruce Coville has delivered a down-to-earth unicorn tale, if such a thing is possible. Song of the Wanderer, the second book in The Unicorn Chronicles, delivers a neat follow-up to Into the Land of the Unicorns, unraveling mysteries and handily reweaving new ones just as fast. The world of the unicorns, Luster, is carefully and cohesively imagined, with myths and rules and prejudices that seem logical and organic. Readers will thrill to the story of Cara, an earth girl who becomes both ward and savior of the unicorns. She must travel through Luster--a world replete with all manner of secret caves and rainbow prisons and talking seashells--back to earth to try to find her grandmother, the Wanderer. The episodic structure of the book is satisfying; Coville delivers all the de rigueur scenes, including a makeover, wherein a Geomancer provides Cara with clothing appropriate to her journey: "To finish the outfit, she strapped a short sword to Cara's side. 'May you never have to use it,' whispered the Geomancer." (The rest of us hope otherwise.) Coville hurries his heroine past some flat characterizations through clever, well-thought-out plot points. And he leaves his ending compellingly open, as befits a series: Luster resounds with rumors of "the possibility of a fierce, final battle that would decide the ancient struggle between the unicorns and the Hunters once and for all." Stay tuned, unicorn lovers. --Claire Dederer

Book Description

Luster, the world where the unicorns fled to escape the Hunters who have sworn to wipe them out, has dangers of its own—as Cara discovers when she attempts to cross that world in a desperate effort to rescue her grandmother. Each stage of Cara's journey brings new peril, wondrous new characters, and new clues to the mystery of her grandmother's past. And through it all threads the haunting melody of the "Song of the Wanderer", heard on this tape for the first time. From the enchanting flute notes that introduce the story to its stunning conclusion, listeners will find themselves, like Cara, drawn heart and soul into the wonder of Luster.

After being cast into the mysterious land of Luster not too long ago, twelve-year-old Cara Diana Hunter is finally just moments away from meeting the Unicorn Queen - Arabella Skydancer. During her time in Luster, while Cara has missed Grandmother Morris dearly, she has made friends with mythical creatures of all shapes and sizes - from Thomas the Tinker to Lightfoot the Unicorn, and a squirrel-like creature called Squijum to the half bear/half human Dimblethum, and many, many more. But the time has come to buckle down and complete the mission at hand to save Luster forever as we know it. The Unicorn Queen has reached old age. She is fading slowly but surely; however, she refuses to say farewell to her friends and family until she has had the opportunity to see Grandmother Morris - aka The Wanderer - one last time. This is where Cara enters the story. It is the Unicorn Queen's request that Cara, along with a glory of unicorns - Moonheart, Finder, and Belle. Together, Cara and the glory of unicorns - along with Thomas the Tinker and Squijum - will make their way back to Earth, in order to save Grandmother Morris from Beloved and the rest of the Hunter's, and return her to her rightful home right here in Luster. Cara is convinced that, with the assistance of her strong, and powerful friends, the task will be simple. However, she soon realizes that heading back to Earth and locating Grandmother Morris is a much more difficult task than she ever could have imagined. For one, their days are numbered before the dynamics of Luster shift for Autumn, and make it impossible to re-enter Luster in the same location where they departed. Two, the companions will have to find a way to make it to the back of the dragon, Ebillan's cave, in an attempt to reach the secret door that bridges the gap between Earth and Luster. And three, with various moments of contact with the wicked Beloved, Cara has no idea what to expect when she takes her first steps back onto Earth's soil. She's also reluctant to find out. As much as she wants to see Grandmother Morris again, she can't help but feel nervous about leaving the quiet, shimmery world of Luster. But, alas, Cara accepts the task, and begins her journey. This time, however, the journey is much more tiring than her first travels through Luster. With a request to pay a visit to the Geomancer, M'Gama, Cara visits the magician of sorts, where she is given provisions and protection to help her during her quest. But her time with M'Gama is not nearly as important as her time with Grimwold, the individual who records all of the Unicorn Chronicles, and has a very special story waiting for Cara and her companions when they arrive at his front door during their journey. With Grimwold and M'Gama's instructions and information close at hand, Cara sets her mind on accomplishing her task, and finding Grandmother Morris. But through battles with vicious delvers, and encounters with enough mythical creatures to make your head spin; Cara becomes to wonder whether she'll be able to accomplish her task in the set amount of days, or if she'll be the ruination of Luster altogether.

I absolutely adored Bruce Coville's INTO THE LAND OF THE UNICORNS, which I read a little over a year ago. However, upon beginning SONG OF THE WANDERER, I quickly realized that, as fabulous as its predecessor was, it couldn't hold a candle to the magic and adventure found within the pages of SONG OF THE WANDERER. Coville has returned with the rest of Cara's story, painting Cara, once more, as an understanding, brave, kind individual; whose loyalty to her Grandmother, her friends, and the secret world of Luster is admirable; while her determination to complete any task that may find its way to her is thrilling. The fact that, like with INTO THE LAND OF THE UNICORNS, Coville has kept many secondary characters around, and introduced many more only adds to the excitement of the tale, and makes it impossible to stop reading. The Squijum is still one of my favorite characters. His constant ramblings are humorous; while his ability to brighten the mood in any situation makes him a much-needed character. Thomas the Tinker is also a fun individual. The fact that he owns a caravan that can be folded into the size of a piece of paper adds a little magic to the story; while his protectiveness over Cara makes him appear quite similar to a father-like character, whom you can't help but love. I was absolutely ecstatic to see that the faces of Lightfoot the Unicorn and the Dimblethum made appearances throughout SONG OF THE WANDERER, as they are two very important characters whom I certainly wouldn't want to see cut from the story. Coville's descriptions of the vicious delvers, and their surprise attacks send shivers up your spine; while the stories that Grimwold recants regarding Unicorn history are absorbing, and hard to resist. Coville's lyrical writing takes you on a whimsical adventure that won't soon be forgotten!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book Cannot wait for the next.......2007-05-15

I thought this book was really great. Bruce Coville did a great job with this book as he did with the last one. Cara is one of my favorite book characters and I just loved all the twists this book had. Thses books are not your average unicorn books! Some good news for anyone who has already read these books and want to know if there's more there is. Book 3 is supposed to come out around April 2008 and called Dark Whispers. There will also be a book 4.

5 out of 5 stars Looking forward to this book.......2007-04-25

My daughter hasn't made it to this book yet but she is looking forward to it!

5 out of 5 stars Oh My Gosh You Have To Read Song Of The Wanderer.......2007-04-13

Song of the Wanderer by Bruce Coville is a great fantasy book. I definitely recommend it to people who LOVE using there IMAGINATION. The story begins when a girl named Cara is in the wonderful yet dangerous land of the unicorns, Luster. Cara was summoned by the queen of the unicorns to find the wanderer(Cara's grandmother) so that the queen(Arabella Skydancer) can rest in peace. Soon after that meeting Cara sets off on her mission to find her grandmother. The night she set off she had a dream of her many times great grandmother (that hates unicorns) Beloved, contacts Cara in her dream. The next day Cara, Moonheart, Belle, the squijem, and Finder set off to M'Gama's mountain. Cara and the rest of the group follow M'Gama's servant deep down into the mountain, to the point that they are almost under the surface of the earth to do a spell that will help tell the way to the gate that leads from Luster to Earth. Also M'Gama will do something that will surprise you. Trust me.
This paragraph is just about a character that comes later in the book. That character is Lightfoot. Lightfoot is a smart alec, cocky little(well he is not really small he actually is a rather large unicorn) that is also very sweet and protective of Cara. He risk's his life for Cara at one point in the book. And you will find out in what way. Oh and you will find that a unsuspecting person will finally meet Cara. And all you need to do is read the book to find what adventure lies in it. I'm not going to you what is going to happen in the rest of the book.

5 out of 5 stars I waited soooo long for this.......2007-03-30

After picking up Into the Land of the Unicorns: The Unicorn Chronicles when it was first published, I very impatiently waited for this title to be released. My best friend and I read it over and over -- my copy was so worn I went through several rolls of tape repairing it. Finally, on a trip with my high school honors society, I picked up a replacement AND the sequel! That night, I burned through the book in about half an hour. Yes, at the age of 16, I was reading a book aimed at children. I am that hooked. If a third is ever released, I'm going to buy it as well.

The new cover art is impressive, but it kind of ruins the imagination to actually SEE Cara. The imagery in this book, however, puts the art to shame. This is by far the most cleverly-written tale I have laid hands on.

In this book, MacEowen, a teacher of the spiritual traditions of Scotland and Ireland, issues a call to readers longing to live a more authentic life to wake up from "the land of sleepwalkers." "Too many of us squander our lives," he writes, "filling our minds with a crazed habitual raciness that is hard to throw off." MacEowen's purpose is to show us how to break free of our unconscious habits to place our awareness where it matters, living from the perspective of our inner senses and informed by our souls. The "Mist" he speaks of is a metaphor for spirituality used by Celtic peoples. Drawing on his own personal experiences and myths and poems of the Celts and Druids, MacEowen introduces readers conditioned by modern Western society to a world of mystery and meaning that is ours to enter into at any time, were we only to become more aware of it.

Throughout the book, he also shares various exercises to help us further that awareness, and in the process he makes a compelling argument that the "good life" that all of us yearn for can only be found when we live each day with a sense of "wonderment and wakeful purpose" that is in tune with our divine birthright. With The Mist-Filled Path, MacEowen joins writers such as John O'Donahue (Anam Cara) and Caitlin Mathews (The Encyclopedia of Celtic Wisdom) in introducing readers to the ancient spiritual traditions of "the misty green isles" of Ireland and Scotland that gave meaning to their inhabitants for many centuries, and which still hold value for us here in the 21st century.

Book Description

In The Mist-Filled Path, Frank MacEowen, a preeminent teacher of Celtic spirituality, shows how embracing the indigenous wisdom of Scotland and Ireland can lead to healing and transcendence. Using his own travels and teachings along with Celtic stories and myths, he explores ancient traditions, eco-psychology, the ancient mother, altars and hearths, Oran Mor (the Great Song), contemplation, and mysticism. The book tells how to draw on ancestral roots to find a personal spirituality that also works for the greater good.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Introduction Ever.......2007-05-28

I bought this book as part of a course I am currently taking online. I didn't have time to read it so I thought I would wait for a free weekend to sit and do that. I started reading the book and immediately began a beautiful journey into myself.

This book is not something you just read, it has exercises which you really must stop and do. The exercises are simple and yet the results from these exercises are so complex. I learned more about myself and spirituality by reading this book than I did in the last 16 years of practicing Paganism.

This book is a great introduction to sprituality. The Author takes you through a journey of sharing, you don't just read about spirituality you also hear his story which makes the book personal and very touching. It is a totally MUST READ book.

There are clearly enough reviews here to allow a reader to get the essence of what MacEowen is doing in this work; I only will add some personal comments along the line of what a quietly important work this one is. He is firmly rooted in our contemporary industrial consumer culture, with a life line thrown to a wonderful and compelling past that can enrich our lives and feed our souls once we wake up to how hungry we are for an enriching spirituality that connects us to the earth, and our bodies and each other. I have felt this call to my Celtic heritage for most of my life, and feel grateful to have been introduced to this work by a friend. It has served to both deepen and expand my own jouorney.

4 out of 5 stars Out of the Mist...........2006-08-28

This rare treat of a book explained so many things to me. If you have the second sense, if you hugged Oak trees as a child, if you wonder why you see things differently than most, check this book out.

Frank MacEowen bravely tells his own haunting biography: His tale of participating in the American Indian "Sun Dance" is guaranteed to leave you with goose bumps.

For all who yearn to be with nature, for those of Celtic Ancestry, for the Spirit searchers, and for anyone who just wants a great read, pick up a copy of this book.

Book Description

On Nov. 28, 1858, a ship called the Wanderer slipped silently into a coastal channel and unloaded its cargo of over 400 African slaves onto Jekyll Island, Georgia, thirty eight years after the African slave trade had been made illegal. It was the last ship ever to bring a cargo of African slaves to American soil.
Built in 1856, the Wanderer began life as a luxury racing yacht, flying the pennant of the New York Yacht Club and cited as the successor to the famous yacht America. But within a year of its creation, the Wanderer was secretly converted into a slave ship, and, with the New York Yacht Club pennant still flying above as a diversion, sailed off to Africa. The Wanderer’s mission was meant to be more than a slaving venture, however. It was designed by its radical conspirators to defy the federal government and speed the nation’s descent into civil war.
The New York Times first reported the story as a hoax; however, as groups of Africans began to appear in the small towns surrounding Savannah, the story of the Wanderer began to leak out; igniting a fire of protest and debate that made headlines throughout the nation and across the Atlantic.
As the story shifts between Savannah, Jekyll Island, the Congo River, London, and New York City, the Wanderer's tale is played out in heated Southern courtrooms, the offices of the New York Times, The White House, the slave markets of Africa and some of the most charming homes Southern royalty had to offer. In a gripping account of the high seas and the high life in New York and Savannah, Erik Calonius brings to light one of the most important and little remembered stories of the Civil War period.

4 out of 5 stars The Wanderer Hits Home .......2007-07-06

In the book The Wanderer: The Last American Slave Ship and the Conspiracy That Set Its Sails, one is first given a fine portrait of the genteel life of some of the South's more prosperous families. But that picture becomes clouded when business man Charles Lamar of Savannah, Georgia decides to import African slaves long after the trade has been made illegal in the fledgling United States. What ensues are lives turned upside down, deals gone awry, travesties of justice and the underpinnings of secession on the eve of the Civil War.

Erik Calonius has done his homework, quoting from articles from papers on both sides of the Mason Dixon line, as well as providing references to source documents regarding the ship building business of that time, agreements between the United States and Great Britain to patrol the high seas for human contraband and myriad other accounts of the politics of the day. This story has so many twists and turns that no writer of historical fiction could have bested it. But the sad truth is that it is not fiction. In fact this episode has probably not been presented in the average high school history class. I would hope that producers for the History or Discovery channels would bring it out as a documentary film in order to allow access to it in the popular media.

One side effect to reading this book is that I was taken to look back in my own genealogy when I found that one of the key players shared my surname. To my surprise, for better or for worse, I found that I indeed share ancestry with that individual.

A pleasant and heartwarming epilogue does await in the end when one finds oneself asking throughout the book, "Whatever happened to the Africans that were brought in illegally?" But don't skip to the end - you'll want to absorb every detail of this rich story, replete with colorful personalities, action and suspense. Truth is stranger than fiction.

Eric Calonius has obviously done an immense amount of research and transformed it into a beautiful work of art. It is a very entertaining and INFORMATIVE novel. If history repeats itself, one can and should learn from his mistakes. This should be required reading for all poiticians!

5 out of 5 stars Very interesting tale--but not the last American slave ship.......2007-05-15

I enjoyed the book and am glad the author took the time to write the story down. It is worth reading.

Perhaps the author would consider writing about the schooner Clotilda which arrived in Mobile in 1860 with 110--116 captured Africans. The story is known locally so Mr. Calonius would not really have known about the Clotilda. The whole sorid affair was undertaken on a drinking bet. After the War, the former captives settled north of Mobile and named the area Africatown (Prichard, Alabama).

5 out of 5 stars Why Have I Never Heard This Before?.......2007-03-08

Fascinating.

Some reactions from our book club: "How come I've never heard any of this before?" "Hmmm, looking back at this story helps me see just how bullying today can lead us astray on every level", and "...those Fire Eaters and the lives that were lost by so many who didn't understand the economic scheming that really got that war going."

The club is planning a trip to Savannah but the scenes painted by Eric Calonius are vivid enough without the tour.

A most readable, enjoyable and important book. We would recommend it to any book club ... it kept us reading and stimulated rich discussions.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent insight into the causes of the Civil War.......2007-02-06

Let me begin by saying that this is not a book that I would normally have any interest in reading. As a general rule, the topic of slavery is of almost no interest to me, and I tend to avoid the subject due to lack of interest. However, this particular book sounded like it might be interesting, so I decided to read it.

Erik Calonius is a career journalist who has had some plum assignments in his journalistic career. The Wanderer is his first book, and he should be very proud of it. The topic got his interest on a visit to Jekyll Island, outside Savannah, Georgia, when he saw an exhibit to the Wanderer. Intrigued, he started looking into it, and decided to tackle a modern telling of the story.

The slave trade was made illegal in the United States in 1820. However, some of the Southern firebrands who were pushing for secession also strongly favored reinstating the slave trade. Charles Lamar, a relative of L.Q.C. Lamar and of the second president of the Texas Republic, led the conspiracy. Lamar and his co-conspirators purchased the Wanderer, a magnificent yacht, and took her to Africa to bring back a load of slaves in 1858. His crew managed to evade the British and American naval vessels patrolling the coast of Africa and safely made it back to the United States.

Even though their purpose was a very poorly kept secret, Lamar and his co-conspirators managed to evade justice through a combination of corruption and bullying. They made witnesses disappear, tampered with evidence, and made it impossible for the government to convict them of piracy (the crime of importing slaves was designated an act of piracy, and carried the death penalty). In three separate trials in 1859, Lamar and his co-conspirators were all acquitted and escaped justice, in spite of the best efforts of the Buchanan administration to convict and execute them.

There was poetic justice: Lamar was killed in action during the Civil War, and the Wanderer, which was seized and sold by the government, ended up in Union service during the war.

The book is well-researched and very well-written, which I would expect of a senior journalist of Mr. Calonius' credentials. He has brought a topic which would normally not interest me to life with an engaging writing style that almost reads like a novel. The book does have one of my pet peeves: instead of providing specific end note references, they're lumped together at the end by page, which drives me crazy. If one were interested in further research, or reading the primary sources for oneself, this style of footnoting makes it virtually impossible to do so. I absolutely despise that footnoting style. I suspect that was the publisher's call-and not Mr. Calonius'-so I can't necessarily fault him for it.

What I liked best about this book was how it so accurately and amply used the microcosm of this single incident to demonstrate how the agenda of the fire eaters directly caused the Civil War, and how they paid the ultimate price for their calumny. It also demonstrates how the inertia and passivity of the Buchanan administration allowed events to come to a crisis situation. The inactivity of the administration permitted a few fire breathers to flaunt the law for their own purposes, and their actions in doing so directly triggered the Civil War. Ironically, the prosecution of Lamar and his co-conspirators was left in the hands of Buchanan's attorney general, Thomas Howell Cobb of Georgia, who later became a Confederate general.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book, and can highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in the causes of the Civil War.

    Book Description

Written over the course of Leskov’s career, each story in The Enchanted Wanderer elucidates the very essence of the human condition; themes of love, despair, loneliness, and revenge are explored against the backdrop of nineteenth-century working-class Russia. Leskov deftly layers social satire and subtle criticism atop myth and fable, resulting in a richly entertaining collection.

    5 out of 5 stars Two...count 'em Two...Tin Men!.......2006-06-19

This book, for some reason, was one of the hardest for me to lay my hands on as a child. As an avid Oz, this was pure torture. I had always loved the Tin Woodman, so I was desperate to read a book dedicated to him. Finally, on my 11th birthday, I was given the book by a friend of mine...and, after all the anticipation, I am happy to report that the story did not disappoint. I was immediately captivated by the cover of the book, for--what was this--TWO tin men? That was all the encouragement I needed to immediately abandon reality and plunge into this book. Well, after reading this tale again as an adult, The Tin Woodman of Oz stands up as one of Baum's best. In a somewhat rare turn for the author, he gazes back upon a past book of Oz to explore the history of one of his all-time favorite characters--and he does his usual marvelous job. My favorite scene is the adventure with the giantess, Yoop, but this adventure really starts to thump like the heart of our favorite tin man when our heroes meet none other than the Tin Soldier. This is probably the darkest of all of the Oz books; after all, Baum describes the building of a man from the discarded parts of another! But it's always Baum's charming style that wins over and, somehow, he can handle what seems to be a macabre subject matter in a delightful fashion. As a boy, it was a great pleasure to read a book that starred an all male trio (very unusual for Baum) and I'm sure this contributed to making this Oz adventure one of my favorites of the series.

The Tin Woodman of Oz: A Faithful Story of the Astonishing Adventure Undertaken by the Tin Woodman, Assisted by Woot the Wanderer, the Scarecrow of Oz, and Polychrome, the Rainbow's Daughter by L. Frank Baum is the 12th book in the series and tells the story of when the Tin woodman searches for his lost love Nimmie Amee. In this marvelous tale we get to meet all our favorite charachters from the previous tales like Ozma, Dorothy and get to meet some new and not all together pleasent folks like Mrs Joop and the nice Woot, the pig professor. The story line is not the best developed of the oz books but I still loved it and I think that Baum has created a series on par with the lord of rings and the narnia stories.

    3 out of 5 stars A so-so Ozian effort.......2004-03-04

Following "The Lost Princess of Oz," one of the best Oz books by L. Frank Baum (in my opinion) was not an easy task, and "The Tin Woodsman of Oz" didn't quite measure up. When a child called Woot the Wanderer (a bizarre mixture of Button-Bright and Ojo the unlucky) meets up with the Tin Woodsman and Scarecrow, the Woodsman gets to thinking about Nimee Amee, the Munchkin girl he was engaged to ages ago before the Wicked Witch enchanted his axe, resulting in the mishaps that led to him being tin. Realizing he's still technically engaged to her, he, the Scarecrow and Woot set off to find Nimee Amee and make her Empress of the Winkies (the Tin Woodsman himself being Emperor).

The big problem with this book is that it doesn't really add enough to the Oz mythos. While certainly the universe didn't really change or evolve much from book to book, most of the better titles either told a really amusing story or added new and interesting characters. The only new characters we really meet this time out are Woot, who is just like most of Baum's child characters, and the Nick Chopper-clone Tin Soldier. The story itself isn't really that engaging either, save for a welcome addition of Polychrome and a side-plot where the characters are transformed into animals. That plot is resolved quickly and easily, though, as are a lot of the vignettes in this book -- encounters with dragons, a jaguar and a straw-eating monster in an invisible country all end quickly without particularly progressing the story or doing anything but adding a few chapters.

It's not a terrible Oz book, but ultimately, it's rather forgettable. Baum did much better in his time.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful adventure featuring 2 of the original characters.......2003-02-15

This book has a little bit of everything for Oz fans. It focuses on two of the original characters from The Wizard of Oz (the Tin Man and the Scarecrow), introduces two wonderful new characters (Woot the Wanderer and the Tin Soldier) and reintroduces us to the lovely fairy Polychrome. And even though Dorothy and Ozma don't feature in this book, they do appear in the middle to help the heroes out of trouble. As typical of Baum, this book features a quest, as the Tin Man decides that he must marry the Munchkin girl that he left behind when he became rusted in the forest and eventually rescued by Dorothy and the Scarecrow. And while there is no villain chasing the travelers throughout the story, there is Mrs. Yoop the Giantess who captures them at one point and of course the land of Oz itself which throws them several curveballs, like making them invisible for a stretch.

Because there is no one villain this book doesn't remain as focused as many of Baum's books do, but that is part of its charm. We lazily get to explore the wonders of Oz along with our heroes, enjoying several amazing encounters and slowly learning the true history behind Nick Chopper's transformation from meat person to tin man. Because the plot and therefore the entire tone of this book are so casual, Baum makes it easy to become comfortable with the situations and the characters. Baum once again proves why his Oz books rank right up there with the best of the young adult fantasy books being published today. The Tin Woodman of Oz belongs right up there on your bookshelf with the Harry Potter books and King Fortis the Brave, all wonderful examples of how excellent children's literature can be.

5 out of 5 stars An Oz classic.......2000-08-15

Like all of L. Frank Baum's Oz books, "The Tin Woodman of Oz" has an effortless sense of memorability about it which not all Oz authors have been able to attain. It raises more interesting philosophical problems about identity and the nature of love than do most of the Oz books, and is, like most of Baum's writing, gently humorous and optimistic about the world and human nature. Some of the plot twists in the latter part of the book, which concern the repercussions of Nick Chopper's transformation into a Tin Woodman, may be disturbing for some young readers; but the questions these events raise are fascinating and could lead children into interesting discussions with their parents about what makes a person himself. Books of Wonder's beautiful edition includes all of John R. Neill's illustrations, including the endpapers and the color plates; this is the only one of the "Famous Forty" Oz books to include illustrations of the Wicked Witch of the East, of the Tin Woodman's long-lost love Nimmie Amee, and of the Tin Woodman himself as he appeared when he was a normal "meat" man. All of Baum's books are children's classics, and "The Tin Woodman of Oz" is no exception.

"I am not always such a dreamy girl, listening to the sea calling me. My father calls me Three-sided Sophie: one side is dreamy and romantic; one is logical and down-to-earth; and the third side is hardheaded and impulsive."

Thirteen-year-old Sophie, skipping between "dreamland or earthland or muleland," hears the sea calling her. Much to the concern of her adopted parents, she decides to join her uncles and male cousins on a sailing voyage from Connecticut across the Atlantic to England (and her grandfather Bompie) on a 45-foot sailboat. Not only does she want to make the trip, she feels she has to.

This perilous cross-Atlantic journey will make young readers feel the wind in their hair and the salt spray on their face. Newbery Medal winner Sharon Creech (Walk Two Moons) describes the sailing experience with astonishing precision--from the smell of the sea to the intricate workings of The Wanderer itself.

Along the way, Sophie proves her bravery and competence to the rather grumpy all-male crew; intrigues and captivates her cousin Cody with her beautiful, odd stories of Bompie that always somehow end in underwater disaster and apple pie; and spills her heart into a daily journal. Readers get another angle on her, too, as Cody keeps a log that alternates with hers. He grows to know, and like, and wonder about, his new cousin Sophie along with the reader, and as her mysterious past reveals itself bit by bit, we are all right there on the edge of our seats, ready for the boom to crash over to the other side.

Sophie's adventures take her not only straight into perilous waves higher than buildings, but deep into her hidden past. This profound, suspenseful novel will pull you into its swift current and barely let you surface for breath. (Ages 9 to 13) --Karin Snelson

2 out of 5 stars Rehashing Walk Two Moons.......2007-09-22

Walk Two Moons is a beloved book, but I am disappointed in The Wanderer. If I hadn't read Walk Two Moons, I probably would have enjoyed The Wanderer more than I did. Like Walk Two Moons, the storytelling is well done and the writing is solid. Sophie is an interesting character and the growth of her and her cousins is enjoyable. What I don't like about The Wanderer is that it is essentially the same story as Walk Two Moons -- a girl on the cusp of womanhood is taken into the protection of colorful relatives who allow her the space to discover the truth about her past and her parent(s). Like Walk Two Moons there is a grandparent who needs the love and support only our hero can supply. Like Walk Two Moons, there is the moment of harsh realization.

If you can read only one of the two books, read Walk Two Moons.

    4 out of 5 stars A Great Story.......2007-03-22

"The Wanderer" is a story about a young girl that is destined to spend time in the sea. A thirteen year- old Sophie is that young girl. Sophie happens to feel like she is called by the sea, and then her dream came true.
Sophie travels from America to England with her three uncles: Uncle Stew, Uncle Dock, and Uncle Mo, and as well as her two cousins: Brian and Cody. This little group of six travels on the ship called the THE WANDERER all the way over to England and as they travel they share their feelings and hopes.
Every one has problems. Cody is trying prove himself to his father and the crew. Brian feels like he is being left out of everything. And then the uncles are nagging at each other. Sophie is trying to ignore that she was an orphan at one time and in stories will tell how she was known as The Little Kid and says how her life was a HUGE mess as she was tossed to everywhere after her parents died.
The reason why I like this book is because it is a good novel and that it tells a good moral that you don't have to hide your past and forget about. I say this would be a good book for young children that love the sea (like I do) and adventure.

    4 out of 5 stars Family Relationships.......2007-02-28

Sophie is thirteen years old and setting off on a grand adventure. She is going to sail with her three uncles and two cousins from New England to the country of England to visit her grandfather. She knows everything there is to know about sailing, and she is excited to get on her way, although her parents aren't so thrilled about her taking this trip. Through her diary the readers get to hear all about the places they stop on the way to England and the treacherous voyage across the sea. We also see the ways in which her two uncles relate to their sons and how her three uncles and two cousins relate to each other.

At the same time, Sophie's cousin Cody, a clown who doesn't get along very well with his father, is also keeping a journal as a school project. From him we learn that Sophie seems to be playing a part and she isn't really what she says she is. Is Sophie lying to all of them, or is she such a good pretender she has even convinced herself that her thoughts are the truth? What happened in Sophie's dark past? Is this voyage her way of facing her past?

I liked reading this story through the two sets of diary entries. One would often shed light on what the other had said, which was interesting. I liked the ways the family members on the boat worked through their issues and ended up becoming closer.

I didn't like Brian's character and the way he kept harassing Sophie. I found myself confused by the beginning of the book, where after reading Sophie's version of the truth I read Cody's first diary entry and realized Sophie might be lying even to her diary. It took me a little while to get my mind straight after Sophie lost my trust.

If i were to rate this book i would rate it a 4 star because half of the book wasn't that intersting and the other half of the book made it hard to put the book down. The Wanderer is about a young teenage girl named Sophie who travels out on the open sea with her Uncle Dock, Uncle Stew, Uncle Mo, her cousin Cody and her cousin Brian. They are on a ship called the Wanderer and are traveling to England for their both sick father/grandfather to comfort him. But along their way to England, they come along many tragic difficulties that they struggle to get out of. But nothing was as tragic as the giant black wave that overcame them all in a very tragic way.......... but as they reach Bompie, they realize Bompie has no clue who they all are. But as they enjoy their visit, little by little, Bompie reconizes them. But then comes the day that they have to travel back home. But not everyone, Uncle Dock decided to stay with Bompie until he was better. As the Wanderer travels on their way back, Sophie couldnt remeber anything. She started to tell Cody about the wave then Sophie paused, she didnt remeber anything!! No Bompie, no wave, no open sea?!!! Is this a dream, where is everyone? Uncle Dock, Uncle Mo, Uncle Stew, Brian, Cody, Bompie? ME???...........................................If you think The Wanderer sounds marvelous and
extragant, read the other Sharon Creech Novels!!! -Celina,11... Deane Elementary

    4 out of 5 stars An Adventure.......2007-02-13

The Wanderer, by Sharon Creech was an adventure for me as well as the characters. Sharon Creech described the journey well. It felt like I was there, rolling along the waves. The characters had distinct personalities. Brian and his father were always organized. Cody was energetic and his father seemed like most the time he was in a bad mood. Uncle Dock was calm and thought things through and Sophie, Sophie enjoys life. Some terrible things have occurred in her past, but she does not let that get her down. Sophie, an adopted 13 year old girl, sets sail on her Uncle Dock's "baby" the Wanderer with all her boy cousins and her uncles. There were two perspectives of the journey in this book. Sophie and Cody both wrote in journals about the sea and the work they had to do on the Wanderer. When the crew is sailing, Sophie tells stories about Bompie, her grandfather even though she has never met him before. But what she doesn't know is that she mixed some of his past experiences with her own. There are many mysteries going on in the Wanderer. When a big storm hits everybody feels like none of them are going to survive. Everybody's spirit is broken and none of them know what's going to happen next. While I was reading this book I had one main question and I think the characters were asking it too. Will they ever reach the land of Bompie?
