Book Description

Butch O'Neal is a fighter by nature. A hard-living ex-homicide cop, he's the only human ever to be allowed in the inner circle of the Black Dagger Brotherhood. And he wants to go even deeper into the vampire world-to engage in the turf war with the lessers. His heart belongs to a female vampire, Marissa, an aristocratic beauty who's way out of his league. And if he can't have her, then at least he can fight side by side with the Brothers.

But fate curses him with the very thing he wants. When Butch sacrifices himself to save a civilian vampire from the slayers, he falls prey to the darkest force in the war. Left for dead, he's found by a miracle, and the Brotherhood calls on Marissa to bring him back, though even her love may not be enough to save him.

3 out of 5 stars Glad it's out of the way..........2007-10-09

I have loved all of the other BDB books (Zadist being my favorite). But I have to say, I'm really glad this one is out of the way. I've never really cared about Butch and Marissa, she seems whinny and vapid and he goes from being all macho around the brothers to slobbering all over himself cause a pretty girl is near by. But there are some interesting things learned in this book and it held my attention through the end.
At least it's done and hopefully from here the rest of the books will be as good and engrossing as the first three were.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite JR book yet!!!!.......2007-10-02

I loved this book!!!! Butch is my all time favorite character (so far), I knew he would end up with Marissa. But the dynamics and intimacy between Butch and V was awesome, great, fantastic. I loved the way JR wrote the story and created that intimacy between the two guys without it being overtly sexual. I am so glad Marissa finally grew a back bone and stood up to her brother. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

5 out of 5 stars I liked it.......2007-09-30

I liked this book. Actually I have enjoyed all of the BDB books by JR Ward (1-4).

THIS BOOK SHOULD HAVE BEEN ABOUT V AND BUTCH. THEY HAD THE BEST RELATIONSHIP. I WAS READING HOPING TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THEM. THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN BUTCH AND MARISSA DID NOT DO MUCH FOR ME. HAVING SAID THAT, I LIKED THE BOOK, CAN'T WAIT TO READ ABOUT V LOVE HIM

Black Dagger Brotherhood Series (Definitely Read Them In Order!):

Dark Lover

Lover Eternal

Lover Awakened

Lover Revealed

Lover Unbound

If you have not been reading this series, be sure to start with the first book and follow the series from there. By the time you reach book 4, you've come to know all of the characters well. Each character has a distinct personality that stays the same from book to book. J.R. Ward keeps them consistent, so you are always glad to be reunited with "the guys". The continuing story is terrific. The bonds between the characters get deeper with each book.

In Book 4, "Lover Revealed", our hero is Butch. He's a man with a big heart, who will do anything to help out a friend. Because he is human, the brothers are very protective of his life. Butch loves his buddies, but he feels he is useless in their world. As an ex- cop, Butch needs to be in the battle. He has been in love with a vampire female, Marissa, for months. With his heart broken over her, Butch feels he has nothing to lose if he is killed.

While attempting to save civilians from enemy slayers, Butch is captured, taken prisoner, tortured, and left for dead. His roommate and best friend, "Vishous", is the only one with the means to find him. The evil enemies have put a poison in Butch's body. Vishous will use his gifts to heal Butch, and he will do all he can to reunite Butch with Marissa. Fierce loyalty and trust between Butch and Vishous make it possible for Butch's dreams to come true. However, the means for making those dreams happen could also cause Butch's death.

Marissa has been cast out by her family. With no place to go, The Brotherhood offers her shelter. When the love between Marissa and Butch intensifies, she begs him not to take part in the war with the brothers' enemies. Butch is devastated. He has to choose between the woman he loves, and the only true family he has ever had. His bond with Marissa is soul- deep, but his love for his brothers and his chance to make a real future for himself are worth any price.

Keeping with the trend of this series, "Lover Revealed" is exquisitely romantic. The love scenes are intense, and the ties between the leading couple are binding. The brothers are loyal to each other, and to Butch, without fail.
Ward writes her characters with personalities that are funny, direct, realistic, and moving. They seem like the kind of men you could meet in everyday life. They pick on each other in good natured teasing, as real brothers tend to, and they back one another as real brothers would. I genuinely like these guys. That makes the books addicting.

Also in this edition:
John's story is continued. Vishous's character plays a major role, preparing readers for his story in the next edition. Mr X is back, but he has a new and surprising scheme.

5 out of 5 stars Everything it should be.......2007-09-27

I was so happy to discover Carrie V and her Kitty - thanks to an Amazon recommendation, whoever wrote that program is a genius ... so I can fill my paranormal mystery shelf with something a little more inventive than Anita Blake has turned out to be. (If anyone wants a full set of AB in hardcover, I dropped them off at the West L.A. Goodwill a couple of weeks ago.) Kitty has everything I want: suspense, humor, realistic human drama, adventure and action, a little romance, and interesting, evolving characters. Can't wait for the next one.

This is definitley my favorite book in the series so far...they just keep getting better! Can't wait for the next one Kitty and the Silver Bullet

5 out of 5 stars Love the Kitty universe!.......2007-08-16

This was a fast, fun read that made me stay up well past my bedtime to finish. All the Kitty books are good-I just finished th series and really recommend it. All my favorite writers of the moment (Patricia Briggs, Karen Chance, Ilona Andrews and now Carrie Vaughn) are shaking up the fantasy genre with some really new, fun ideas. If you love fantasy but want something a little different, this is a good place to start.

4 out of 5 stars Student becomes teacher.......2007-07-18

During the 1990s there was a slew of books and movies with vampires as central characters being put out, then there was a suttle switch and werewolves started becoming the focus of the lead characters. Now we're getting more and more books put out that are dealing with lycanthropes. It's interesting to see these changes, switching the wolf from villian to hero.

Life isn't easy being a werewolf, let alone one named Kitty. Kitty Norville returns after being outed on camera and testifying at the senate hearings regarding the existance of the paranormal. In this thrid novel, she retreats to a cabin in a small town in Colorado to regroup and begin writing her memoirs. Someone doesn't like having an in-residence werewolf and begins leaving gutted rabbits on her doorstep. To make matters more complicate, werewolf hunter Cormac shows up, toting Kitty's lawyer/friend Ben O'Farrell who has himself been attacked by a werewolf. Kitty must try to convince Ben life is still worth living, inadvertently teaching herself the same lesson. To top things off, a skinwalker shows up and Cormac is arrested. Kitty and Ben must investigate to free Cormac but all roads lead to nowhere.

This third novel is entrancing and I found myself reading it much faster than the last book. I've always had the feeling that Carrie Vaughn is seemingly projecting herself into the Kitty character, even the cover photos look a lot like Vaughn. What makes matters more confusing is I'm also reading Patricia Briggs' Mercedes books. Briggs and Vaughn are putting the books out at the same time and it's interesting seeing the similarities and differences between the two authors. Overall, enjoyable book and very quick to read, just lacks a bit in the action but the Kitty books aren't necessarily about the action.

5 out of 5 stars Easily as good as the first two (and maybe better).......2007-07-10

The third book in this series follows the first two perfectly. More character development for all three main characters in the story.

5 out of 5 stars Its better on the dark side.......2007-10-09

This book is the first in an excellent series. It is technically in the romance aisle (and let me tell you it is VERY explicit) but it leads with the vampire fantasy world and doesn't deviate an inch the whole way through. You will get sucked into the world of the brotherhood and wont be able to turn it down. I read the book straight through in a day and a half and then immediately went out and bought the rest. There is a solid story line and graphic-no-holds-barred sex that could be a cameo in basic instinct. I loved this book and I know you will too. J. R . Ward has the skills to draw you in with well defined characters that make you care about them, then blows your mind and makes you tingly with what goes on behind closed doors!

5 out of 5 stars Definately a Keeper!!!! One of my Absolute Favorites!.......2007-09-20

I have three words for you.....OH. MY. GOD!!!!!!I could not turn the pages fast enough. What an amazing series...amazing story....amazing book! I highly recommend this for anyone who likes Kenyon or Knight the writing and character development in this is a step above. If your thinking twice about buying this series, just buy it, you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING!!!.......2007-09-16

This is one of my all time favorite romance novels. Before meeting the Black Dagger Brotherhood, I had absolutely no interest in paranormal romance. I'd always seen the characters in other books of this genre as being creepy, to say the least. My sister forced me to read this book while on vacation.
WoW!! J D Ward's protagonists are so well-written, so engaging and have such gut-wrenching appeal, I was hooked after chapter 2. She has created a completely unique vampire culture - complete with language (each book has a "glossary of terms"), social traditions and even anatomical/biochemical details unique to her brand of vampire.
If you have never been a fan of this genre...please give this book and the others in the series a try. You will NOT regret it!!

5 out of 5 stars BEST in paranormal romance.......2007-09-13

J.R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood series knocks everything else in the paranormal romance subgenre out of the water. Her characters are, hands down, the most rounded, most complex, most magnetic out there. Ward is concise and well-written where Sherrilyn Kenyon rambles and falters. Her plotline is amazingly intricate, original, and well-executed. Tales of the brothers are always fun and funny, easy to fall into. Where Angela Knight's style can be too technical and too slow, not quite self-confident enough, J.R. Ward's books are easy to read and fast-paced, giving you plenty without giving you too much. Even Kresley Cole, my second-favorite author, doesn't do the world-building and character exploration J.R. Ward does. The one down spot, for me anyway, is the lessers. I have trouble making myself read those parts, but then again, I can at times be a lazyish reader who won't deviate from the main characters' storyline. Overall, I'd give this an A+.

5 out of 5 stars Oh heck yeah!.......2007-09-11

3 out of 5 stars disappointing.......2007-09-16

If you're looking for a little escapism with a guaranteed "happily ever after" this is a okay book for that.

I was greatly disppointed in the production quality of the audio, though. Major direction shifts (which character is now narrator) were separated by nothing. It felt like the producers sped up the speed of the narration overall, the read was quite fast & the indistinguishability of character changes made it less than appealing.

It was also very predictable for me. I foresaw the scenarios of Colette's former boss, the wedding twist, even Colette's resolution at end. It was all very much just like a fairy tale. Maybe the original book was, too, but this one was transparent to me.

5 out of 5 stars Great Story.......2007-08-14

I love the Blossom book series of stories. Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down. I love the different stories going on in one book.

Debbie Macomber has written another wonderfully glorious book about the knitting friends. She has such a welcoming way of writing that the reader feels like an active participant in the group - that these women are her best friends too! I find myself laughing, crying and anguishing right along with them.

Book Description

Kenyon became a remarkable success story with Dark Side of the Moon, which became an instant bestseller. Now, her newest, most imaginative, and most breathtaking Dark-Hunter novel yet tells the tale of an ex-god in search of revenge, a servant of Artemis out to stop him, deadly enemies at every turn and a plot that may very well end the world. Ever since the moment his godhood was taken by Artemis, Sin has done nothing but plot his revenge. But when he kidnaps a woman he believes to be the goddess, he quickly finds out that she is not Artemis, but her servant, Katra. And instead of capturing her, Katra captures him. She refuses to release him until he promises not to seek vengeance on her mistress. In spite of himself, Sin is intrigued by Katra, who is nothing like the deceitful Artemis. She's fierce and true, but also compassionate and loyal. However, Sin is not the only enemy Artemis has and it quickly becomes apparent that he must help Katra save her mistress... or life as we know it will cease to exist. What's an ex-god to do?

3 out of 5 stars Answers some questions, but overall a bit average.......2007-10-05

I started reading Kenyon's Dark Hunter series just this past year, but I have now read them all and I have to say that "Devil May Cry" was a bit disappointing.

The story was entertaining enough, but the development of the character relationships and the climax and resolution of the story were a bit weak.
The relationships of Sin and Katra and Ash and Katra were somewhat stunted, too simple. Without giving too much away the only way I can explain is to say that it took a great deal of `Suspension of Disbelief' to accept the ease with which Ash and Katra were able to overcome the circumstances of their relationship. Also, the conflicts between Sin and Katra are not resolved well. They don't really hash out any of their problems as much as they merely see a problem, separate, come together with no understanding, see a problem, separate, and come together with still no understanding etc. The only way I could take it in was by telling myself that the `saving the world' urgency story line left them little time to take a moment for some personal communication. But still, at no point at the end of the book did I feel like there was a proper relationship resolution, and they had a lot to resolve.
The story's conclusion being anti-climactic was so sad. It had so much potential but lacked the excitement `oomph' that Kenyon usually is capable of creating. Those last few chapters had me excited for some action but after that last page I was left under whelmed.
On a more positive note, a lot of questions about Acheron were answered and we were given a more personal insight to Artemis's character. No doubt this will come up in the future books (an exciting possibility). These aspects of "Devil May Cry' were perhaps what saved the book from being completely flat. And while I have so many problems with this Kenyon book, that it was just not up to par with her others, I still say that it is a must read (as it is part of the fabulous Dark Hunter series and you just can't miss a part of it).
So, potential `Devil May Cry' reader, I recommend that you check this book out from the library, or borrow it from a friend, to read and then decide for yourself if it is worth buying it to read again.

5 out of 5 stars Devil May Cry.......2007-09-28

Love her books. Never disappoints in the reading. Can't wait for her next book.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Read.......2007-09-28

very hard to put down, read it in one night, easily kept my interest throughout and would reccomend to anyone who likes the mystery and suspence of the paranormal romance

5 out of 5 stars Never a Disappointment!!!.......2007-09-27

Devil May Cry is another wonderful read by Sherrilyn Kenyon! I have yet to be disappointed by any of the Dark Hunter Novels. This was another one I couldn't put down.

So many questions about a lot of the characters were answered in this book that I am more anxious than ever for the next novel to come out. I am also awaiting the series of Dream Hunter Novels.

Sherrilyn Kenyon is THE BEST in my book when it comes to Paranormal Romance!

I highly recommend the entire series.

2 out of 5 stars The only DH novel I decided not to buy.... spoiler alert...........2007-09-26

I absolutely fell in love (with a half dozen different characters) the very first time I read a Dark Hunter novel. (The full length novels are much better than the anthologies) Sherrilyn Kenyon became my favorite author, and I would back up and re-read every book in the series in preparation for each new book coming out, just so I'd be 'refreshed' on everything. I LOVE THOSE BOOKS!!! If you haven't read the others, DO SO NOW!!! They are hot, exciting, well-written, sexy, and just plain good-to-their-bones books. But, for the first time, I've decided not to buy a DH book.

I've waited through a lot of books to finally get to Kats story. I know everyone was excited about Sin, but we hadn't seen him before now, and Kat I felt like I knew, and I wanted her have her own story. I'm sorry, but this was just such a let down after such a long wait. She wasn't as likable as she was in the other books. And Kat has always been a kick-a$$ kind of gal, like Tabatha in 'Seize the Night', but unlike Tabatha, who is a pistol from beginning to end, Kat went from tough girl to girly-girl. I mean, she's the child of two Gods, yet she comes across as powerless throughout the book. Her and Sins romance felt rushed and unreal, and to be honest, a bit boring. I wanted to really know Sins tortured past and be able to cry for him and root for him, like I did for Zarek in 'Dance With The Devil' (a GREAT DH book), but I never felt that close to him in this story.

And as soon as you saw Kat was the heroine and you knew she was going to be paired with Sin, then you knew the big secret was coming out, and she would be reunited with her long lost father. So I thought, okay, here it comes, the fireworks, the drama, the long awaited showdown between Ash and Artie... and it fizzled. I mean, here's this huge secret that's been what? 11 books in the making, and just a couple of pages after she announces she Ash's daughter she's calling him Daddy, like a six year old who wants to stay up past her bedtime, and Ash goes from 7 foot tall God of Destruction to 'Daddy Daycare' mode. And Ash doesn't so much as say boo to Artie. She kept a child from him for 11,000 years!!! She's physically beat him, tortured him, raped him, kept a child from him, allowed his loved ones to die... and she's still not been put in her place. I kept waiting for it, the bomb that's been sitting their ticking through all these books, but it was a dud. In the earlier books I got aggravated as Artie always getting away with being so evil, and I got frustrated because you can only sit back and watch the bully win so many times before you feel hopeless, but I figured, these stories are drawn out, it'll happen eventually. Now, I'm just sick of it.

The last really good DH book was 'Dark Side of the Moon'. I read it, and re-read it again the same week, something I hadn't done before with a book. And after it's ending, I've been waiting to hear something about what's going on with Nick and Stryker. No such luck.

So, overall, if you love a great story, with sexy characters, steamy love scenes, great writing-plot-settings, then read:
Fantasy Lover, Night Pleasures, Night Embrace, Dance with the Devil, Kiss of the Night, Night Play, Seize the Night, Sins of the Night, Unleash the Night, and Dark Side of the Moon.

All of these Kenyon books are phenomenal, but for me Devil May Cry fell far short of the rest. (So many authors seem to get overwhelmed with writing projects, or maybe tired of a series, or they just want try something new. They take a great formula and they mess it up. Julie Garwood did it with her Buchanan series. 'Heartbreaker' was Heaven, 'Mercy' was magnificent, and 'Killjoy' was... no K words, but it was one of the single best books I've ever read!!! Then she just went downhill in the series after that. And Noah Claybourn, a character you waited through over a half dozen books to get to his story, got the worst story of all. It just turns you off the whole series.)

I just hope and pray Mrs. Kenyon slows down a bit and goes back to her roots for Ash's story. After all these years and all these books, to be let down by his story will put me off her for good.

5 out of 5 stars The best book of the series.......2007-09-29

I read all the BDB books (5 so far), and this is still for me the best one. Zsadist will always be my favorite vampire! Hope JR Ward continues to write books of this excellent quality.

5 out of 5 stars My perfect vampire tale.......2007-09-27

AWESOME!!! The best of the first three!!! I absolutely loved Bella and Zsadists' story!!! Having read book one (Dark Lover) and book two (Lover Eternal) I was already addicted to the series. As amazing as the first two books were, this tale struck a chord in me, it's about facing terrible personal demons and finding a way to heal, something we've all been through. This was the tightest page turner of the three, the books just keep getting better and better. This had the most plot, but was crafted in such away that I never wanted to put the book down, even after my mind was numb from reading. And Zsadist and Bella are two unforgettable characters, their story is touching, deep, emotional. I was so sad when I got to the last page, but I've got more of the series to read, and re-read again!

5 out of 5 stars OH MY GOD.......2007-09-25

OH MY GOD. LOVED ZSADIST. I PURCHASED THESE BOOKS ABOUT 6 WEEKS AGO AND HAVE ALREADY READ THEM TWICE (Z'S BOOK 3 TIMES) SHE IS THE BEST WRITER I HAVE EVER HAD THE PLEASURE TO READ. I CAN'T WAIT FOR BOOK 5

5 out of 5 stars Great Series!.......2007-09-24

I didn't like this book as much as #2 but I still liked it enough to give it a 5 star rating. I love the series. I have read books 1 - 2 at least twice already. I am on a reading marathon trying to catch up so that when LU comes out tom. (book #5), I'll be up to speed with everyone else that follows the series.

Anway, after reading this book, you come away liking Z more. The book also preps readers for Phury's story. Can't wait for that one and I'm already eagerly waiting for Tohr's return. I highly recommend the series but would suggest readers start with book 1 to better appreciate the plots and characters.

4 out of 5 stars Can't get enough of Ward's BDB series!.......2007-09-20

This is the third book of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, telling the story of Bella and Zsadist. I absolutely love this series and am actually rereading the whole thing yet again to be ready for the next book in the series due at the end of Sept. I highly recoommend this book, although I must admit Lover Awakened wasn't my favorite of the four available to date. However, I came away liking Zhadist a whole lot better, and this story had to be told before Ward can give us Phury's story, which I'm dying for!

Book Description

First in a trilogy that crosses the boundaries of erotic fiction-from the bestselling author of Megan's Mark.

Too weak to resist young Kelly Benton's attempts at seduction, Rowdy Mackay left home eight years ago. Duty as a U.S. Marine put a safe distance between temptation and the nubile Kentucky vixen. Now he's back home and ready to engage in the kind of erotic games that have earned him and his two cousins a Nauti-boy reputation in three counties.

Once it was Kelly's dream too-to feel the heat of the boy she desired. But an attack from a stalker still on the prowl has left Kelly terrified of a man's touch. Now as fear and desire converge, Rowdy fights to save her from the deadly threats of a stranger, to rid her of her demons, and to satisfy a hunger more powerful than either can imagine.

3 out of 5 stars Well...........2007-09-03

I guess it wasn't toooo bad. I mean I wanted to give this a 3.5 instead. I felt as if the characters are kind of lacking. The plot is there but the characters were weak. I read this after finishing Forbidden Pleasure so yes I was a little disappointed. However, the excerpt for Dawg's book sounds pretty exciting and Natches! Can't wait to read his story.

So because this is Lora Leigh, author of Forbidden pleasure, I'll give her another try.

3 out of 5 stars not that great.......2007-07-26

its okay- i think i am over lora leigh and the threesome aspect of it all. and her being sexually traumatized didnt come off that true or realistic at all. i think this will be my last lora leigh book for awhile.

4 out of 5 stars A Sexy read.......2007-06-25

Rowdy Mackay has been in love with Kelly Benton long before he should be. So to advoid problems Rowdy joins the Marines and leaves for eight years. Right before he comes home Kelly is attacked, which make her afraid of a man's touch even Rowdy's. But now Rowdy is home but the danger is still near.
"Nauti Boy" is the lastest book by Lora Leigh and I really liked it. Ms. Leigh gives the reader a real plot line and not just mindless sex and while some say it is not as good as her "August Books" I really liked it and can't wait for the next book in the series.

5 out of 5 stars Nauti Hottie.......2007-05-23

This is a great book about the first of three cousins that live a naughty lifestyle. Rowdy returns home from the service to finally be with Kelly only to find her being terrorized by a psycho. Rowdy and his naughty cousins Dawg and Natches set out to capture the stalker. Along the way Rowdy finally gets together with Kelly and they have to decide whether or not they are going to share intimacies with his cousins. The cousins always share women but suddenly Rowdy doesn't know if he wants to share Kelly and Kelly has to decide if she can handle all three.

Can't wait for the other stories to come out. This book is not for people looking for a nice sweet romance.

4 out of 5 stars Hotttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt.......2007-05-12

I really enjoyed this book. It had story and lot of really steamy scenes.I enjoy all of Lora Leigh books and look forward to the next in the trilogy!

Book Description

Financially straitened and on the path to spinsterhood, Venetia Milton thought her stay at the remote, ramshackle Arcane House would be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to engineer her own ravishment. She was there to photograph the artifacts collected by a highly secretive organization, founded two centuries earlier by an alchemist. And the alchemist's descendant-her employer, Gabriel Jones-has the eyes of a sorcerer.

But despite Venetia's intent to seduce Mr. Jones and move on, she is shattered upon her return home to read in the press of his violent demise. Using the sizable fee Mr. Jones paid her, Venetia establishes a new life, opening a gallery in London. Of course, posing as a respectable widow makes it easier to do business, so-in a private tribute to her lost, only lover-she assumes the identity of "Mrs. Jones."

Her romantic whim, however, will cause unexpected trouble. For one thing, Mr. Jones is about to stride, living and breathing, back into Venetia's life. And the two share more than a passionate memory-indeed, they are bonded by a highly unusual sort of vision, one that goes far beyond Venetia's abilities as a photographer. They also share a terrible threat-for someone has stolen a centuries-old notebook from Arcane House that contains a formula believed to enhance psychic powers of the kind Gabriel and Venetia possess. And the thief wants to know more-even if he must kill the keeper of the Arcane Society's treasures, or the photographer who catalogued them, to obtain such knowledge.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Subpar plot.......2007-10-07

I've always been a fan of Amanda Quick's witty sense for verbal exchanges and amusing plots, but this is by far one of the worst romances I have ever read. The romance between the couple in unconvincing and unsubstanciated; the plot is silly and nonsensical. Do not read it; you'll be disappointed. Try one of her earlier books, like Mystique, that's a bit more plausible.

4 out of 5 stars good mystic victorian romance.......2007-09-20

This book was a good read.

Nothing stunning, nothing new, and, sadly, part of a series.

But a good read, none the less.

Our Heroine, Venetia, is a woman who has been orphaned and is responsible, with a maiden aunt, for raising younger siblings. She obtains gainful employment as a photographer. This is all back story - I've a feeling this was gone over somewhere else, and I've missed it.

We start the story (after a quick, pithy prologue) at a museum of sorts. Venetia has decided, since she's doomed to be an old maid, that she wants a night of passion. She's picked our hero, Gabriel, for her liaison.

Gabriel also chooses Venetia, only for a bit more than a liaison.

There are twists and turns and all sorts of "psychical" subtones. It's a very fun story, a very hot romance.

5 out of 5 stars Jayne Ann Krentz's touch is, as always, light and fun........2007-09-13

You can always tell a Jayne Ann Krentz story. Her lively characters and whimsical families will entertain you all book long. Writing as Amanda Quick, SECOND SIGHT is the start of a new series, The Arcane Society and its first family the JONES.

SECOND SIGHT follows Gabriel Jones and Venetia Milton "Jones" adventures in trying to find and stop the use if an old alchemist's notebook for nefarious reasons. London at that time was a Mecca for charlatans and fraudulent psychics. The Jones must now use their own unique talents to find the bad guys and stop them.

The Jones have been leaders of the Arcane Society since it was started by Sylvester Jones. Their job was to protect the Society and its secrets. Venetia is a hired to create a photographic record of the Society's museum. Her seduction of Gabriel is interrupted by two would-be robbers, who try to sneak into the house. Gabriel forces her to leave with the rest of the women and Venetia later learns of his death in a house fire. Using Gabriel's name, she moves to London to start her own photography studio. Three months later Venetia's "husband" Gabriel shows up in London and so their adventures begin.

Jayne Ann Krentz's touch is, as always, light and fun. So relax, enjoy, and do not miss WHITE LIES. The Jones are back!

4 out of 5 stars Not a real paranormal story.......2007-06-25

The reading is very good but... if you expect a paranormal story you won't get one so if you don't like paranormal stories you'll enjoy this one. The problem here is that I really wanted one when I bought this book. On the other hand the story'll keep you reading and trying to guess what'll be in the next page.

1 out of 5 stars My opinion.........awful!.......2007-06-08

This is my fourth time to write this review. If it doesn't work this time I will know that the paranormal forces are aligned against me and give up. The first two I erased myself. The third one disappeared into that great black hole in the Amazon computer (but only after two days) and it didn't even have any rants, raves, or rambling. Go figure.

THIS REVIEW HAS WHAT SOME MAY CONSIDER SPOILERS. IF YOU DON'T WANT TO SEE THEM, STOP READING NOW!

1. This is billed as a paranormal romance. Don't believe it. If you expect to learn anything about the Arcane Society from this book you will be disappointed. Why was the society formed? We are told that the society was formed two hundred years previously by the alchemist Sylvester Jones but that is on page 5 and no more information is given. Who were and are the members? How do you join? How have they maintained the strict secrecy concerning the society all this time? WHAT DO THEY DO? None of these questions, which are actually quite basic, are ever answered. Venetia was commissioned to photograph the "artifacts" of the society. Do you know that not one of them is ever described?

2. What was the formula? What was it supposed to do? Again, no information. Just in the very last pages, what happened if you drank it, but what was its purpose?

3. The editorial and artistic decisions made in printing this book just made me MAD! The print is so big I could read it without my reading glasses and I DID NOT buy the large print edition. Each chapter begins on the right hand page and half way down, at that. This results in totally blank pages, half blank pages and enough white space between other chapter endings and new chapter beginnings to form another blank page. I actually added it all up. At a conservative estimate I got over 63 blank pages (or their equivalent) inside this 390 page novel. Padding, padding, padding just to make it into a long enough length for a hardcover book. Hopefully these issues will be addressed in the paperback version. FIX THIS! Also, the print is done in a washed out grey, not crisp black. Why? For atmosphere? Did I mention that the margins were "generous"?

4. The heroine, Venetia Milton, was (according to my way of thinking) cold and calculating. This was supposed to be because she was "modern" in her thinking for the late Victorian era. She chose to seduce Gabriel Jones after finishing her photography job at Arcane House because it was an isolated location so there was not much likelyhood of getting caught, she would never see him again, and she was on the shelf because of her age and family obligations. She wanted to find out what passion between a man and woman was like but never wanted to get married. When she thought he had died she was sad enough to cry, rub his coat (which she had kept with her even though all her clothes and photographic equipment was left behind-but not the camera-during her flight from danger)and then decide that life must go on. She became a "widow" in London to ease her way into business and used Mrs. Jones as a name because he wouldn't be needing it anymore. Cold folks, cold. When he "came back from the dead", she considered him an inconvenience. There was no joy in seeing him, they never even touched! Good heavens, she called him "sir" for well over 2/3 of the book! And please, Ms Quick/Krentz, what in the world were you doing with the Janus Club stuff? Just more "modern" thinking? In order to provide a reason for blackmail? Very, very weak.

5. The paranormal "gifts" these two characters had were piddly. She saw "auras", he "felt evil". Whoop-de-do! I kept waiting for something else to be revealed, but that was it. Sum total of their paranormal abilities. Why was it necessary for this novel to be set in late Victorian England in order to set up the contemporary novel under the Jayne Ann Krentz banner? This one is dull and boring. That is my opinion. Others love it and have praised it to the skies. I love other Amanda Quick books, just not this one. It is totally forgetable for me and I will never want to read it again.

In short, it would have made a passably good 100 page short story. Nothing more.

*****As an update, I saw the paperback version of this book in the bookstore yesterday and I'm happy to say that the publishers did address (to some degree) the problems of blank pages and other editorial decisions mentioned in my review. If you want to read this one, for goodness sakes get it in paperback.*****

Book Description

Weddings are never easy. But when you're Vampire Queen Betsy Taylor, they can become downright deadly...

In the days leading up to The Big Day, Vampire Queen Betsy Taylor seems to have a full house and the wedding guests have yet to arrive. Along with her human buddies, there's a ghost, a werewolf, and a Fiend crashing at her place. And though her fiancŽ, Vampire King Eric Sinclair, conveniently disappears when the conversation turns to seating charts and flower arrangements, he does manage to make his oh-so-sexy presence known at other moments.

Cold feet are no surprise, especially with an undead groom. But when Sinclair truly goes missing-and not just to avoid wedding preparations-along with most of her friends and loved ones, Betsy is frantic. Alone and afraid for the fate of everyone she loves, Betsy can't trust anyone as she tries to find them and whoever is behind all the disappearances. And what happens next will shake the foundation of the vampire world forever.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Strange edition in the series.......2007-10-08

This book, seems to wrap up many of the loose ends and bring in the Wyndham wolves. The problem is that this book just doesn't seem like it really wraps up many of the issues. Why does Betsy survive so much damage? What's with the librarian? Interesting, but I think I'll stick with paperback in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Undead and Uneasy.......2007-09-03

Betsy Taylor, the Queen of the vampires, is getting married to her wonderful Eric Sinclair. But all is not coming up roses.

There's the issue of the dress, since white doesn't exactly suit a vampire's coloring, her best friend is battling cancer and Sinclair is less than thrilled about helping with the wedding plans.

And then, things go really bad. Betsy's father and stepmother are killed in an accident, Sinclair disappears, as do several of her friends, and Betsy is left to plan the wedding by herself, and wonder where everyone is. Add in some visiting werewolves who are looking for a missing pack member and you've got a wedding that is to die for.

Despite the turmoil in the book, Undead and Uneasy was an interesting and entertaining read. I've always liked Betsy and the way she deals with things. This volume of the series allows her to grow and shows that, while she's a relatively young vampire, she's the queen, and not to be messed with.

Lovers of the Undead series will enjoy this latest installment as much as I did. Seeing Betsy come to grips with things was enlightening and entertaining. My only complaint would be that the yummy Sinclair wasn't around enough. Undead and Uneasy is a great addition to the Betsy series.

4 out of 5 stars Betsy grows up.......2007-09-02

Ms. Davidson has done it again. Betsy gets just what she wants, and then has to learn how to deal with it. Betsy actually grows up while dealing with the issues in this episode. Without giving away anything to do with the outcome of the story, I think it is safe to say that you should always be careful what you wish for. All in all a worthy edition to the series.

4 out of 5 stars Vampire Vows.......2007-08-13

Betsy Taylor, Queen of the Vampires, is down to the wire on the wedding plans; she has just two weeks to the big day and she has yet to pick out a wedding dress. Her groom isn't being very helpful, Sinclair feels that the wedding is unnecessary as the Book of the Dead already recognizes them as married. He is getting grumpy and Betsy and he are not getting along.

While she finalizes the plans she faces one of her biggest obstacles to date. Unfortunately when Betsy needs everyone the most, no one is there for her; everyone has disappeared, leaving the Queen of the Vampires alone. Betsy is forced to fend for herself for the first time since she woke up Undead.

The best part of this book to me was the visiting Werewolves. While Betsy struggles through her days solo, we get an unexpected visit from Antonia's Werewolf family, the Wyndhams. The initial meeting between Betsy, Michael, Jeannie, Lara and Derik, was hilarious and fun. I hope they make a habit of appearing as I have missed them.

While I enjoyed this book, I couldn't love it like I have all the other Undead books. With Betsy's eclectic entourage MIA, the story was missing a lot of the laughs and action each of them usually draw. I really felt the void each character's absence left.

The ending was a bit anticlimactic to me and I couldn't help muttering "duh!" when Betsy finally put the pieces together. There was also a bit of unfinished business; Derik has an odd reaction to BabyJon and we never find out why. This is still very good read but not quite the great read I am used to by Ms. Davidson or this series. I gave this a 4 star rating, but I would say it is more 3 ½ stars.

Sixth book in the series and it's as fresh as ever. Betsy the vampire queen is definately a journey you want to go on.

Book Description

Christine Feehan, New York Times bestselling author and "the queen of paranormal romance" (Publishers Weekly) now explores the limits of endurance and the boundaries of passion in a life-and-death struggle to survive...

It begins as a mission to protect a politician from an assassination threat. But the operation takes an unexpected turn when Mari, a mysteriously beautiful GhostWalker, is taken hostage. At the same time, Ken Norton, expert assassin and himself a GhostWalker warrior, is on a mission of his own-one that reaches into Mari's own past. No stranger to the ways of violent warfare, Mari must join forces with Ken and trust his every move-each one more intimate than the last.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time - this book is terrible.......2007-09-24

Don't waste your time or money on this book.

I'm a longtime fan of Christine Feehan. I've read all of her Dark books, the first couple Drake Sisters books, and unfortunately, all of her Ghostwalker books. I enjoyed 'Conspiracy Game,' but found 'Deadly Game,' (the next in the series) an absolute waste of time.

If you read 'Conspiracy Game,' you will enter 'Deadly Game' with an idea of what Ken Norton is like, not to mention what his brother Jack is like. So Ken finds Mari and whaddya know, is instantly attracted to her. Mari's been shot and beat up when they find her, so she's confined to a hospital bed for the first few chapters.

The book progresses, Mari still in her hospital bed, with Ken and Jack very often in the room with her. Conversations go like this...

Jack says, "I'll put a bullet in her head right now."

Ken leans down by Mari's head and says, "Don't mind Jack. He likes to shoot people."

Mari says, "I figured."

He says, "She's not that hurt, you know."

Okay... so who's "he" in that conversation? This happens a LOT.

Mari looks at the twins and says/thinks things like, 'One of them displayed at least a bit of compassion, while the other was cold as ice.' Weird thing is, it seems like she's saying Jack has compassion and Ken, the one she's "helplessly attracted to" is the cold as ice one. Huh? Which one was just pointing a gun at her, and which was comforting her?

She fluctuates between kicking Ken in the head to caressing his face, sometimes on the same page of the book. It's ridiculous and makes the development of their relationship bizarre and hard to believe.

The actual story taking place, with the Senator, Dr. Whitney, and the rest of Mari's people back at the ranch, gets lost in the terrible, flip-flopping, hot and cold, needs-an-editor writing.

4 out of 5 stars Ken Norton's story.......2007-08-14

Well, I liked reading about Jack Norton and Briony (Conspiracy Game), but Ken was horribly tortured. I couldn't help but feel sorry for him and kept hoping some good would occur, but it didn't. For him.

I hate that he was practically peeled and even his "privates" were cut up. Just makes me sick to my stomach thinking about the torture he indured.

5 out of 5 stars Deadly Game.......2007-08-09

The ghost walker series is extremely addictive. This installment is no less addictive. I can't wait to see what develops next. My only compliant is that we have wait so long for the next book.
