Middle of the road.......2007-09-30

This was a slow dense read. While it was very well written, Trading in Danger felt like a short story with a lot of boring business exposition thrown in to pad it out to novel length.

I've never read anything by this author before, but the more I look into her backlist, I see that this book is a retread. I'm going to read the next one because I've already bought it.

Ky is a likable enough character who spends too much time in her head. No one else sticks out. The bureacracy Ky is up against is the most interesting antagonist.

I sincerely hope the next volume is better.

Enjoyable read........2006-10-23

I picked this book up, not sure I would read it, or even finish it. I read it in 1 day. Ms Moon has created a cast of characters that I really want to see succeed, and cared what happened to them. She also created a world that was believable, without being over sci-fi technical and long boring detail or description about stuff. I recommend this to others.

Trading in Danger tells the exciting story of Ky Vatta, a girl who suffers from a complete and utter lack of any kind of personality. Her entire life she's always been entirely devoid of any kind of qualities or traits which would make her the least bit interesting to read about. Thinking the military would make her a more interesting person, she goes off to Space Academy. Unfortunately, due to some illogical plot device, which is never really explained properly, (she apparently commits some kind of treason by telling a fellow cadet where he can find a priest so he can confess his sins. No, I didn't make that up.) she's kicked out and has to return home to the family trading business.

Her father quickly gets rid of her by making her captain of a ship crewed by characters even less interesting than Ky. For the first time in her life, Ky has finally found a place where she belongs. Everyone aboard the Glennys Jones is dull and forgettable, and Ky is finally able to quietly be nothing more than a name on paper. At last she's free of the pressure to be someone she's not, and she can spend page after page doing nothing interesting without any danger of being overshadowed by more interesting people.

If you want to read about forgettable characters doing forgettable things that you've already seen done many times before, and long since forgotten about, then Trading in Danger is a book you still shouldn't read. Read this book only if you're suffering from insomnia, or if you find the idea of reoccurring jokes about unwanted fruitcakes from Aunt Grace the least bit funny.

Not as engaging as her previous series (Hunting Party et al), but still a good read. Compared to her older works, it seems a bit abbreviated.

Mac Si-Fi.......2006-03-27

Yet another mass produced si-fi story apt for quick consumption, with but minimal entertainment value. A simplicistic, linear plot and stereotype characters like they come straight out of a space sim like Privateer or Freelancer. Any Star Trek episode has more depth.

As with fast food, consume infrequently - if you must. There is so much better stuff out there.

I'm just getting my head around this guy and find him quieter than the other hard-boiled dectectives (Chandler, Hammet) so more will be revealed.
I liked this book and am on to the next one. I have not been dissapointed.

A so-so first book.......2007-03-28

'Moving Target, The' is the first novel in which noir-American writer Ross McDonald introduces his most famous detective, Lew Archer. Published in 1948, in a time when noir movies was at the top, the book is just a unremarkable pulp fiction story with classic ingredients as murder, treason, much money, kidnapped and poor ladies in distress.
When you read 'Moving Target, The' you feel that McDonald was very far to develop a strong and convincing work; in fact, most of the time the reader will feel the influence of some other authors hovering above Mc Donald's style. Great authors, to be sure, as Raymond Chandler, for instance.
The story is just normal, and sometimes even full of flaws. But Archer is a good characther. In a way, his sympathy and easy way saves this book to be a complete misfire.

Acts of betrayal........2005-12-22

First published in 1949, The Moving Target is one of Ross Macdonald's earlier novels. Action packed and nicely paced, the narrative of this book is noticeably less convoluted than many of the other entries in the Macdonald canon.
As hardboiled PI Lew Archer searches high and low to locate missing millionaire Ralph Sampson, he encounters more than a few very interesting characters along the way. These include Sampson's paraplegic wife Elaine, his headstrong 20 year old daughter Miranda, Claude a bearded prophet of questionable repute and Fay Estabrook an aging film star who doubles as an astrologer.
While successfully relating this intriguing mystery, Macdonald simultaneously manages to paint a vivid picture of life in the Southern California of the immediate postwar era.
The Moving Target is an engaging detective novel that deftly brings to life the place and time in which it unfolds. Must reading for those who enjoy California noir.

Sufficiently Complicated.......2005-09-13

I enjoy ross MacDonald because the plots are sufficiently complicated, but nonetheless logical. Throughout, the story and background are credible. They are all I look for in an interesting entertainment.

Terrific hard-boiled detective fiction.......2004-10-08

When listing the greats of Noir detective fiction, Macdonald seems all too often to be left off the list. The Moving Target, with its introduction of the wonderful Lew Archer character, is a good place to begin with his writing and one of the best in the series.

The Moving Target explores a wide variety of relationships that turn poisonous-- husband and wife, brother and sister, lovers both requited and unrequited, employer and servant, and lawyers and the law. Originally said to have been titled "The Snatch" (vetoed for obvious reasons), it tells the story of the kidnapping of an eccentric oil millionaire named Ralph Sampson. Lew Archer is hired to help get him back, but he quickly begins to wonder if anyone wants Sampson to return.

While all the characters are interesting, the addicted jazz pianist Betty Fraley is particularly complex and well-drawn. A very good read.

Bait and switch...I am STEAMED!.......2007-07-16

Would give this a ZERO if I could! We thought we were getting Erik's story and found out we got SUCKERED into buying something other than tha. What a bummer for all the loyal fans of the Enchanted, Forbidden and Untamed books to find that THIS was the long awaited sequel that told Erik's story. It was HORRIBLE! We ALL feel CHEATED! Actually - I feel better just pretending that Erik's story hasn't been told yet than to think it was this piece of drivel! I'm sorry to say but since EL left those books, the Only series and Autumn Lover/Winter Fire behind - she hasn't written a decent thing that has to do with romance! If you want to write suspense or fiction or whatever RIDICULOUSLY descriptive book you want on jade, pearls, rubies, jems, ancient manuscripts, gold etc., etc. then STOP calling them ROMANCE novels! Move into the suspense genre of fiction and stop using the true romance fans out here to buy your books that don't have a THING to do with romance!

Why Bother.......2006-10-04

This is my first read/listen of this "author". My comment: Why would anyone want to read the "Book of the Learned" or die for it. Yes I can see the rarity value of such a scroll but I won't fight or die for it.

Either there's a backstory here that I don't know or this is weak, weak!

12th Century Illuminated Manuscripts in the Insular Celtic style.......2005-08-09

This book followed the format of the Donovan series and a couple Donovans even put in a "cameo" appearance. The book begins with an old woman in a truck who is being followed as she heads to her remote cabin in near desert outside of Palm Springs. She gets to her shotgun and when the man knocks on the door and offers her two million dollars for the "Book of the Learned", she tells him to leave. Then later at sunset the man comes back unknown to her and throws homemade napalm bombs in the cabin and the old woman is burned to death.

We switch to a year later and Serena Charters is in Morton Hingham's law office. Her grandmother was the old woman in the cabin. He gives her the deed to the land where her grandmother's cabin was and 4 illuminated manuscript pages from her safe deposit box. Mr. Hingham recommends House of Warwick and Erik North to appraise the pages. Serena is a textile weaver artist who does commissions and is also starting to become known in the artistic community. She send color photocopies to both places and goes to see Mr. Warwick of the House of Warwick and that is where the excitement begins!!

I really enjoyed this book as there was so much detail and information and description. If you don't like detail and just want the nitty gritty suspense and romance, you many not enjoy this book as I did. Also the unusual flashes of the past that both Erik and Serena have added some very interesting elements and also added to both of their unwillingness to trust one another.

All dots were connected very well for me. I recommend it!

Sadly, a total waste.......2005-07-13

This book is a total waste of time and money. EL, like other romance authors has insulted her fan base and thumbed her nose at her loyal readers...by going 'mainstream'. I guess what goes around comes around, because instead of the bright spark I've seen in her other works, this books is a dim-bulb.

Instead of great writing talent, we get too much information about antiquities, not enough character development, lame 'romance' and yes, I was one of many who wanted to see Eric's story completed. It's the usual, predicatble 'what dunit' and sadly, just is a bore.

So, good like EL in seeking your new fan 'base'. I'm outta here.

Ask Yourself This Before Buying This Book........2007-09-26

Do you believe that Oliver Queen - a man who came of age in the swinging 60's/70's and was reportedly quite active in the Free Love-making - can make it into the 21st century without knowing about AIDS and HIV, much less having contracted it?

Do you believe he requires a lecture on the subject that appears to have been taken word-for-word from the kind of comic books you got handed in the 4th grade?

If so, you're probably the key audience for this book. If not, you probably paid attention during your health class or already read "Pedro and Me". Which is a much better book even if you ignore the blatant female exploitation in this title. It isn't enough for Winick that Mia is an ex-prostitute with an abusive father - he writes a past as a drug-user into her background as well.... a past that had never been hinted at before and would likely have come up.

Important Moment in the DC Mythos.......2006-02-22

Warning: If you've ignored national media for the last year, you may read some spoilers below...

So why write a review for Green Arrow: Moving Targets you ask? Is it the excellent writing? Perhaps the exquisite art? None of the above; but, don't get me wrong, both are adequate, perhaps even above average in the comic book world. No, the reason I'm writing this review is because Judd Winick (some of you may remember him from an early season of MTV's The Real World) has written an HIV positive character into the DC mythos.

Green Arrow's had some hard luck with his sidekicks. His first junior superhero named Roy Harper, aka Speedy, became a drug addict ironically enough. Well, Speedy cleaned up his act and is now a full grown superhero called Arsenal. Then, Green Arrow discovered he had an illegitimate son named Connor Hawke, who, after dad died, took over the role of Green Arrow. Well, I won't bog things down with explanation, but the first Green Arrow returned from the dead and now works side-by-side with his son, but not as a sidekick, as a partner.

Enter Mia Dearden. She was a fifteen-year-old prostitute that Green Arrow took off the streets and gave a home as introduced by writer Kevin Smith. Winick decided to take things a step further and revealed she was HIV positive from her days as a prostitute. Although pestering Green Arrow to let her become his sidekick long before her discovery, Green Arrow finally gave in, granting her the control over her own life she desperately needed, and so Speedy was reborn.

Now, despite some obvious issues I have with this plot (How do you rationalize a teenage girl with HIV working as a vigilante who uses a bow and arrows? Why did she have to contract HIV by prostituting? Not everyone with HIV acquired it through "illicit behavior," you know?), I will grant Winick credit with treating it as sensibly as one can in the comic book genre. He kept Mia strong and assertive, without crossing into sanctimonious territory. Not only that, but Mia's story is more sub-plot to the overall story taking place in Moving Targets. That overall plot, by the way, paled in comparison to Mia's plight.

So, would I recommend Green Arrow generally? No, I wouldn't, though Meltzer's Green Arrow: The Archer's Quest was excellent. But, I would give Green Arrow: Moving Targets a read simply to witness a writer introduce a rather pioneering character into the conservative universe of DC.

A Book with a Split Personality.......2006-02-19

Collecting comics #40-50, this is the 6th graphic novel featuring Green Arrow. Unfortunately, it's one of the weakest to date.

A big part of this is the fact that the art team changes half-way through the book, and the contrast is so jarring as to make it difficult to continue reading. After the sophisticated, clean lines of Phil Hester and Ande Parks, the work of Tom Fowler, etc. comes across as cartoonish in the worst possible sense. The characters whose appearence we've become familiar with during the entire run of the series suddenly seem to be clownish caricatures of themselves.

The writing is a bit better--the story is fast-paced, if a bit fragmented, with plenty of twists and turns and a large number of new and returning villains for Team Arrow to overcome.

There is also a significant subplot involving one of the supporting characters--but I won't go into that here, since it would definitely be a spoiler for the book. (Regular readers of online comics discussion boards will already know what I'm talking about.)

Overall, a decent effort, but hardly the best book in the series so far.

I have been reading books by Flannery/Hagberg for years now and it is amazing watching an author improve with time.
This one is one of his best and ensures that I will continue to read any more book he writes.

Worth Reading? Absolutely........1999-10-17

This book was published as the Post Cold War world was becoming a fact of life. Certainly, the story of die-hards in the KGB wanting to hang on to the old ways isn't exactly new, but it still makes for compelling human drama. A variety of characters is introduced, each of them truly human, in their own ways as opposed to being cardboard characters that are to be knocked down or left standing when the shooting starts.

W.S. Merwin was born in New York City in 1927 and grew up in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He worked as a tutor in France, Portugal, and Majorca, and has translated from French, Spanish, Latin and Portugese. He has published more than a dozen volumes of orignal poetry and several volumes of prose. Mr. Merwin has been awarded the Tanning Prize, the Pulitzer and Bollingen prizes, the Fellowship of the Academy of American Poets, the Shelley Memorial Award, the Pen Translation Prize, and many other honors. He lives in Haiku, Hawaii.

I suggest reading on, because I have a small but appropriate few sentences to write about Merwin. I first came across Merwin when I was assigned to find a poet I liked who was still living for a poetry class. That is to say, not living for my poetry class in particular, but, a poet still alive, so my known favorites, Solomon of the Superlative Song, William Morris, Eugene Fields or Henry W. Longfellow, writers of, among other things nursey rhymes from my chldhood, nor John Keats fulfilled this alive requirement. As a result, I found myself looking to the song lyrics of the 60s and 70s I'd listened to growing up, my father being a pseudo-hippie, him not knowing that I was actually listening to the words. I say this because it is precisely this music which encouraged me to look into poetry. Unfortunately, my professor was not about to accept song lyrics from Jethro Tull or Queen, though members of the bands might still be living, which was good for me, or I never would have discovered Merwin. It was the first time I opened a book of poetry and found what I was feeling written the way I thought. Suddenly whatever feelings merely drifting at the edges of my subconscious which I had no real way of dealing with were right there on the page before me as though someone had read my mind. It was not eerie, at all, either -- it was just like being an adolescent and literally feeling one's feelings being relayed by rock and roll, or any kind of music for all the world to hear, and glad someone finally understood and was on your side. And so you go out and buy the tape, becasue it's like hearing a good friend's voice, perhaps one that relieves you of tension, or helps you formulate thoughts on the order of the world and your place in things, a friend to reassure and support you. That's what these poems are like, friends that you can read again and again, and be reassured that there is someone out there who understands you, and who can voice what you are thinking when you can't, and these revelations you can keep to yourself, or more likely share with the world, for everyone should have such a friend.

Merwin touches the universal with specifics. Merwin's book bears a simplicity lacking in much of what we do today. His word choice in these poems rarely indicates they were written in the 1970's, but the style is poignantly modern nonetheless. As subjects, Merwin takes nature, aging and friendships. He peppers these with haunting feelings of hollowness, biblical allusions, and the occasional phrase that I cannot reconcile to the poems containing it. With Merwin, though, I remains content and know that a little ambiguity at the edges will keep me returning to the poem year after year.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Concurrent engineering approaches for the disciplines of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and electromagnetics (CEM) are necessary for designing future high-performance, low-observable aircraft. A characteristic- based finite-volume time-domain (FVTD) computational algorithm, developed for CFD and now applied to CEM, is implemented to analyze the radar cross section (RCS) of two three-dimensional objects, the ogive and cone-sphere. The FVTD formulation implements a Monotone Upstream-Centered Scheme for Conservation Laws (MUSCL) algorithm for the flux evaluation and a Runge-Kutta multi-stage scheme for the time integration. Developmental FVTD work for the thesis focused on algorithm development to analyze scattering and obtain RCS data for closed- surface perfect electric conductor (PEC) 3-D objects using either a Gaussian pulse or sinusoid incident wave. In addition, specification of the direction and polarization of the incident wave gives monostatic and bistatic RCS results. Convergence and threshold checks end the simulation run to ensure accurate computation of the RCS. Validation of the characteristic-based FVTD formulation and code for electromagnetic scattering problems is completed by comparing RCS results obtained from the FVTD code to Moment Method and empirical RCS data. The FVTD results for the ogive and cone-sphere are within 3.0 dB of the MoM results and 3.1 dB of the empirical RCS results. Accurate FVTD computations of diffraction, traveling waves, and creeping waves require a surface grid point density of 15-30 cells/lamda.
