Book Description
When Lynn Darling met Lee Lescaze at the Washington Post, they could not have been more different. He was older, married, more “establishment,” a celebrated foreign correspondent and editor. She, who entered Harvard at age sixteen, was a brilliant wild child of the sixties. She lived life in the present tense, where every affair was an adventure. Then Darling fell in love and everything changed.
This is a story of the many lessons love can teach us, of a marriage turned upside down and inside out, and all the tenderness, thrills, comfort, and yes, even disappointment, that comes with the territory. Lynn Darling thought she knew the narrative of her own life, until it really began with her “one true north,” and now, ten years after his death, her story is still unfolding.
Customer Reviews:
A beautifully written book.......2007-08-26
"Necessary Sins" is a book to be read closely and savored for its beauty, and like many readers I fell under its spell and couldn't put it down. The language is lush, image-rich, begs to be read aloud.
The early part of Lynn Darling's memoir sets the stage with her wild youth and her early writing career at The Washington Post. I found the wild child less convincing, possibly more described than demonstrated, the articulating of character flaws a bit abstract and analytical; not quite messy enough. But she's very persuasive as the unfocused writer panicking about deadlines, only as good or as bad as her last story.
The middle part details her love affair with a married colleague, Lee Lescaze. Lee's marriage breaks apart because of the affair and Lynn and Lee marry, incorporating his three children and his older, established friends into their life -- "They were all very kind to me, but among them I felt like a kazoo in an orchestra ..." As their love and commitment deepen the reader gets a more detailed picture of how these emotional bonds affect the author's heart.
The final part of the book is the payback, where the heavy price is paid for that love and commitment. Darling writes compellingly about the birth of their child: "The world shrank to just the two of us. My connection to Zoe had a love affair's tenderness, its violent pendulum from ecstasy to despair, its physicality, its wild unsteadiness." The losses are detailed in heart-rending prose and seem to support that prose more securely than the earlier parts of the book.
Overall, "Necessary Sins" is beautifully written and tells an ordinary but moving story. At times the lyrical writing overshadows the story; it's a superb memoir of the author's feelings without, in the earlier sections, giving as much basis as it might have for those feelings. The excesses of her single life, the introspection about her family ("My family always lived in places where the trees had just been planted"), and even the angst about her career seem like prologue to the main story of her love and loss. While I found this book to be rewarding and beautifully written, it might have been more satisfying as a longer book.
We all choose every day how to present ourselves to the world. In this memoir Lynn Darling offers herself to us courageously, and I'd like to get to know her better. Oddly, that may be easier in a book less personal and painful, and I'll be watching for more from her.
I recommend this book to anyone who appreciates crisp yet lyrical writing and doesn't mind a sad story.
sublime memoir.......2007-05-11
This is a beautiful book. It conveys all the simple hunger of young love and all the complicated pain of real life. I read it in one sitting, stopping only to get more tissues. It left this reader emotionally scoured, but able to look with fresh eyes on what it means to be a lover, a mother, a woman.
A love letter.......2007-04-16
This is a self-deprecating love letter from Lynn to Lee. Anyone who has found themselves to have fallen in love during a ravenous and questionable affair will be able to identify with Darling's simultaneous certainty and uncertainty. I feel as though I have discovered a love letter in a bedside drawer and am reading it as quickly as I can, lest I be discovered by the owner.
A love story, not a fairy tale.......2007-03-30
Lynn Darling is a wonderful writer, and in this memoir she tells the story of a true love that transformed her and that remains, years after her husband's death, the wellspring and center of her life. But she also shows the price he and she paid for their love story--a broken first marriage for him, guilt and pain for all involved, and the deep tragedy of the death of a child. A skilled reporter and stylist, Darling can create memorable characters and scenes. But what makes this book so powerful in the end is her refusal to spare herself or be less than candid about her motives and behavior. If you believe in love and in its power to redeem the soul (or even if you think you might), you'll find yourself thinking about NECESSARY SINS long after you have read the last page.

Adequate guide.......2007-08-24
Adequate for simple repairs and a general understanding, cheap alternative to buying the factory shop manual.
Survival tool.......2007-06-02
It's got home mechanic information about civics, but I wish the descriptions and the instructions had more detail. It needs better pictures too.
very frustrating.......2006-07-09
Disappointed with this & all Chilton car books. If you are a complete beginner , the explanations & pictures are not clear enough to make you feel comfortable.
The descriptions are not clear & there is a need for a lot more & a lot clearer batch of pictures.
They may work for you if you have some car knowledge but take time to read through them before you buy.
I do not feel that I got my monies worth & wish that I had looked at other options.
Helpful Information.......2003-07-08
This book has saved me $$$ many times. Although it is not in depth as a Factory service manual. It is money well spent!
Chilton's Honda Civic and Del Sol 1996-00 Repair Manual.......2001-10-21
Adequate for simple repairs and a general understanding of the cars covered, Chilton manuals are a cheap alternative to buying the "real" shop manual. Unfortunately, for whatever the reason, they are fraught with errors and omissions. Wiring diagrams may not be correct, and often simple step by step instructions are unclear. I have had Chilton's manuals for several of the many cars that I have owned and I often swear at them more than I swear by them.

Serious Service Manual.......2007-01-12
Although I am not a mechanic, from what I can tell this is a serious service manual. Very in depth, all fasteners, all steps are gone through, leaving nothing to chance, or guess. Light years more thorough than a Hayes Manual.
Highly recommend it you are doing any sort of maintenence on your own car.

John Corey, former NYPD homicide detective, assigned to the Federal Anti-Terrorist Task Force in the pre-millennium 90's, makes a return appearance in a thoughtful novel offering an alternative to the government's "official" position on what really happened to TWA Flight 800, which crashed off the Long Island coast in the summer of 1996. Accompanying his wife Kate to a memorial marking the five-year anniversary of the crash, Corey's curiosity is aroused by what appears to be a concerted effort by Kate's fellow federal agents to keep him--and her--from investigating a case that appears to be closed. Corey's detecting skills lead him to two witnesses to the crash, who were enjoying an adulterous interlude on the beach at the time the plane went down--and videotaping their sexual escapades while what appears to be a terrorist missile attack takes place in the background. What ratchets up the tension in this capably written thriller is what the reader knows but Corey doesn't as he heads for a showdown with those responsible for the official cover-up as the clock ticks down to the morning of September 11, 2001. DeMille's deft touch with a riddle wrapped in an enigma--what really happened to Flight 800--makes his "what if" scenario a more than plausible theory; you don't have to believe in conspiracies or government cover-ups to find his latest engrossing, entertaining, and enlightening. --Jane Adams

Nelson DeMille on Night Fall: An Exclusive Essay
It was a true story, the explosion of TWA Flight 800 off the coast of Long Island in 1996, that inspired Nelson DeMille to write the fictional Night Fall. Read this Amazon.com
exclusive essay for insight into the coincidences that made this tragedy a subject DeMille couldn't ignore.
Book Description
On a Long Island beach at dusk, Bob Mitchell and Janet Whitney conduct their illicit love affair in front of a video camera, set to record each steamy moment. Suddenly a terrible explosion lights up the sky. Grabbing the camera, the couple flees as approaching police cars speed toward the scene. Five years later, the crash of Flight 800 has been attributed to a mechanical mal-function. But for John Corey and Kate Mayfield, both members of the Elite Anti-terrorist Task Force, the case is not closed. Suspecting a cover-up at the highest levels and disobeying orders, they set out to find the one piece of evidence that will prove the truth about what really happened to Flight 800-the videotape that shows a couple making love on the beach and the last moments of the doomed airliner.

Most Disappointing.......2007-09-30
Wow ! I've read a lot of fiction. This book was a total waste of time. The book is about 650 pages (he could have pared it down to 300 w/o wasting any meaning whatsoever. After reading for an eternity, the plot was so disappointing I was annoyed at myself for wasting my time. I was waiting for resolution between the characters, for all to be revealed and justice done.... instead it felt like the author just gotlazy at the end and killed off everyone in one felt swoop. Shame on you.
Suspenseful, worth the read!.......2007-09-20
This is my first DeMille, and it won't be the last. It really made me stop and question the account of what happened to TWA 800. Too many people saw SOMETHING, and the answers weren't exactly enlightening. I wish we could've known the motives of the "bad" guys, and although I knew we were leading up to Sept. 11, the actual ending SHOCKED me - never saw it coming. Some reviewers have criticized what they thought was his confusing Sept. with November because he mentions elections, but he said it was primaries, not a general election. All in all, a GREAT read!
John Corey Great Character.......2007-09-15
Nelson DeMille's writing style is great. I have read 2 books, this and Wild Fire with John Corey as lead character! This book was fair and balanced about the Flight 800 tragedy. I too believe it was a missle shot from the GROUND up and the possibility was very realistic to me even after all these years. The character, Nash and his disappering act makes sense to me also. I'm a avid Mysery reader and while this book could use more suspense, it really kept my attention all the way through as did 'Wild Fire'. My hope is that DeMille will write more books with the lead character, John Corey and his wife!
Night Fall.......2007-09-05
This was absolutely spellbinding. It held my attention through the whole book. The characters were charismatic and interesting.
Amazing read.......2007-09-05
DeMille starts off by explaining that he has taken certain literary license with the facts of the TWA 800 crash. The book was suspenseful and addictive. If you don't read this book, you're really missing out. The best part is, you'll never see the ending coming.
Book Description
Ten years after Roger Tory Peterson's death, his unique perspective on birding comes to life in these highly personal narratives. Here he relates his adventures during a lifetime of birding and traveling the world to observe and record nature. Whether it is in writing about the time when his boat capsized in freezing water off the coast of Maine while he, then in his eighties, was filming a documentary, or about his experiences searching for the ivory-billed woodpecker, Peterson's sense of adventure and curiosity cannot be extinguished. The accomplished illustrator and writer was nearly as passionate about photography as he was about painting, and each essay is illustrated with Peterson's own photographs. The essays included here were carefully selected by Bill Thompson III, the editor of Bird Watcher's Digest, in which the columns originally appeared.
Customer Reviews:
A set of vivid vignettes perfect for that avid birder........2007-03-05
All Things Reconsidered: My Birding Adventures is an excellent pick for any who have long known of and used Roger Tory Peterson's birding guides, which have become leading industry references in the fine art of bird identification. A decade after his death comes a personal collection which blends color photos and line drawings with a passionate survey of the bird world, selected by the editor of Bird Watcher's Digest which ran his column 'All Things Reconsidered' during the last twelve years of his life. His adventures traveling the world are captured in a set of vivid vignettes perfect for that avid birder.
A Very Good Book.......2007-01-26
This was purchased as a gift, but before I wrapped it I read four of the essays. Enjoyed them very much and learnd some things. It has some excellent illustrations, too. I'm going to buy a copy for myself. Sorry I haven't read more for this review.
Fitting Tribute.......2006-12-27
The author, who died ten years ago, is the well-known originator of the Peterson's Field Guides. This book makes available to a wider audience a selection of columns he wrote for a bird magazine. In them, he takes us all over the world and familiarizes us with a wide variety of birds, other wildlife, and people. His prose style is a beauty in itself. The editor has updated the articles in small but important ways.
The book uses quality paper to enhance the photographs, and quality type. It must be one of the finest books produced so far this century, and at the Amazon price it is truly a steal. All in all, a fitting tribute to the author, who obviously was loved by many. A joy to own, to read, and to recommend.

The definitive biography of sportscasting giant Mel Allen.
Customer Reviews:
Maddening.......2007-10-08
I really have to wonder how this book came to be written and can only conclude that the author has friends in high places with fat wallets who don't care. While Allen is a fascinating subject, as the other reviewers suggest, the writing in this book is absolutely brutal, so disjointed and distracting that I gave up halfway through . . . and so will you.
As Mel would say, "How about THAT?"
It brings back the past for baseball lovers.......2007-07-13
It was a book that you have to read from thr begining to the end in one day., a must for the people who grew up with him on the radio,
Tedious.......2007-07-04
One has to wonder what the editors at Lyons Press are up to. Why was this published? This book adds little to the small canon of works dealing with Mel Allen. More's the pity, too, since Mr. Smith was obviously a good friend of Allen's and if there was any broadcaster that he was suited to serve as biographer, it was 'The Voice.'
As a biography, this is light-weight stuff and completely forgettable. Much of the material is extant in other works. This will briefly rekindle fond memories of the legendary broadcaster, but fails to connect to any broader themes or even to establish a meaningful legacy for the subject. Allen's real story rarely takes center stage here, drowned by Smith's borderline hagiography -- Allen was, after all, a friend -- and the flowery, but leaden, prose that is a hallmark of Smith's other publications.
It is the prose, in fact, that detracts the most from this effort (as it does from all of Smith's publications). Make no mistake about it, the English language is beautiful in the hands of a master - and Smith clearly fancies himself just that. Readers will be administered a heavy-handed beating by pretentious, unreadable, sentences, paragraphs, and pages displaying Smith's "love the English language."
Like 'Voices of Summer' this book probably shouldn't have been published - at least, not without some sane editor demanding that Smith's pen-driven ego be checked at the door. Ultimately, this is a second-rate, poorly written, attempt at biography that proves what some astute critics have been saying for a while: someone needs to save the history of baseball broadcasting from Mr. Smith.
Great subject, less than great writing.......2007-06-09
Mel Allen was a great part of my childhood. I knew nothing whatever of his life and thus was expecting a good read. The problem is that much of this book is about baseball and not Allen. But a bigger problem is the writing; it takes effort to get through the dense prose. The author is fond of wordplay and this takes away so much from the great subject. The puzzle of why Mel got fired at the peak of his career is not much of a puzzle; it was the cold-blooded Yankee brass. A lot of hints of Mel's inner life, including his sexuality, but it's all pretty surface. Mel comes off as an asexual workhorse who couldn't say no. Maybe he just didn't have an interesting inner life. This book is all external. A disappointment. But it does show how Allen as well as the players had so little power compared to now.
WORST WRITTEN BOOK EVER.......2007-05-16
This is most disappointing. It was the most difficult book to read I have ever read in my life. The author is jumping all over the place, talking about unrelated things. He could have told the story in half the pages. So hard to read - it's almost impossible to follow.

Customer Reviews:
A Good Repair Manual For Vehicle Owners.......2003-07-18
Save your money on Chilton. They do not hold near the information, clarity and in depth detail, thus VALUE, that Haynes Repair Manuals do. Having said that, I would like to address some complaints I've come across about both Haynes
and Chilton's Manuals.
1.) If your manual suggests at a point to seek professional input it is because MOST NON mechanics don't possess the skill or tools or shop equipment to perform a certain procedure (be it correctly or safely). The publishers' lawyer insisted on the "seek professional input" so as not to take on legal liability for an unqualified person attempting to perform a critical step in their car care. The reason is valid. You can injure yourself and damage your vehicle as well as render your
vehicle unsafe to be on the road.
2.) Prior to purchasing a repair manual, LOOK THROUGH IT. Almost every auto parts store in America sells Haynes and / or Chilton's. If the particular manual you need doesn't have the plastic removed, look for a manual that does and look through the sections. CAUTION most auto supply stores will get mad and make you buy anything you rip open. They're trying to sell information contained in the manual, not give it away. Some copies are USUALLY open and can be looked
at. Does the manual seem logical, good pictures? Thorough? Then CHANCES ARE that brand will be a good choice for your repair. Also READ the cover front & back thoroughly. It will tell you if special vehicles aren't covered (AWD, Alternate Fuel Vehicles, etc) Know what vehicle you have so you get the RIGHT manual. The correct year, make, model, engine size.
3.) If you do encounter a problem in the middle of a repair, it's possible that it is YOUR not doing something correctly. Not the tool, or the repair manual. Go away from the car, get lunch or a cold glass of lemonade, read through the manual. Even start again in the morning.
4.) As automobiles become more sophisticated, there is truly less and less that a vehicle owner can do him or herself. It is a fact, you will need to take your vehicle into a dealership or well equipped shop for more things. In addition, used oil and other fluids are difficult to dispose of. DO NOT THROW DOWN YOUR DRAIN OR BURY IN YOUR BACKYARD!!!. Tires, batteries all have special disposal needs.
5.) There are some people WHO ARE NOT MECHANICAL. Buy them books, audio / video equipment, ties for Christmas. NOT A WRENCH SET!
6.) Neither Haynes nor Chilton are Professional Shop Manuals (these are available for hundreds of dollars).
As for the particular manual for the Haynes (ASIN: 1563923580) Dodge Caravan, Plymouth Voyager and Chrysler Town & Country from years 1996 through 1999: This manual does NOT COVER All-Wheel Drive nor Alternative Fuel Models AND SAYS SO ON THE COVERS. Haynes breaks down into different sections each of the engine options (in this example: 4 cylinder,3.0 liter V6, 3.3 liter V6, and 3.8 V6) If you're say, changing an air filter, make sure you're looking at the right directions for the engine for the vehicle you have. The different engines have important items positioned in different locations and thus DIFFERENT INSTRUCTIONS for each item on each engine. You can even utilize Amazon "take a look inside" feature to check out if this manual is for you or not. .I checked it's description for changing wiper blades, oil and oil filters, air filters and general repairs and found it both accurate and easy to understand. I've been happy with Haynes manuals over the years and recommend all vehicle owners purchase one even if you don't expect to do any repair or service yourself. It helps to know the information, to be aware of how your car works and to talk in a reasonably intelligent manner (on your part anyway) when you take your vehicle in for service.
I'm happy with this purchase. And have been with every Haynes manual I've bought and used in the last 20 years.
John Row
Very Inaccurate.......2003-03-14
You would not be even able to change your air filter if you used this book. I tried to follow the instructions for changing the air filter on my 99 Grand Caravan, but I was left with frustration. This is just one inaccuracy I found. I would'nt be surprised if there are more.
Maybe the book is good for another year not for the 1999 Grand Caravan model.

Customer Reviews:
Chilton does it again - Don't waste your money.......2001-11-29
As usual Chilton has produced another manual that is useless to anyone who wants to do much more than check the tire air pressure. All repairs that require a slight bit of mechanical ability are not described and instead the reader is advised to take the car to the dealer. Don't bother buying this book. Read the owner's manual that came with the car instead.
A Decent Book, With Some Limitations.......2001-09-20
Chilton books have been part of my automotive coping strategy for years- one of their publications once even helped me find out where a bad repair from my mechanic went off track, and I was able to give the mechanic enough info to get the repair re-done correctly. This book seems to be okay, with one exception that is usual to Chilton guides. There is not NEARLY enough information on dismantling soft trim and dash components, and what there is does not cover the different configurations you're likely to find. For instance, this guide shows how the centre console goes together- but only the extra-cost version with the stick shift in it. The standard console- found in most Tauruses- is not shown at all. Since many owners confine their do-it-yourself efforts to fixing soft trim glitches and replacing light bulbs, this is a considerable lack in Chilton's efforts. Recommended, nontheless- there's very good info on what's under the hood, and it's very specific concerning what CAN be repaired and what is factory-set, and therefore not to be messed with. That's invaluable info on today's highly computerised cars.

The Climb is Russian mountaineer Anatoli Boukreev's account of the harrowing May 1996 Mount Everest attempt, a tragedy that resulted in the deaths of eight people. The book is also Boukreev's rebuttal to accusations from fellow climber and author Jon Krakauer, who, in his bestselling memoir, Into Thin Air, suggests that Boukreev forfeited the safety of his clients to achieve his own climbing goals. Investigative writer and Climb coauthor G. Weston DeWalt uses taped statements from the surviving climbers and translated interviews from Boukreev to piece together the events and prove to the reader that Boukreev's role was heroic, not opportunistic. Boukreev refers to the actions of expedition leader Scott Fischer throughout the ascent, implying that factors other than the fierce snowstorm may have caused this disaster. This new account sparks debate among both mountaineers and those who have followed the story through the media and Krakauer's book. Readers can decide for themselves whether Boukreev presents a laudable defense or merely assuages his own bruised ego.
Book Description
In May 1996 three expeditions attempted to climb Mount Everest on the Southeast Ridge route pioneered by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay in 1953. Crowded conditions slowed their progress. Late in the day twenty-three men and women-including expedition leaders Scott Fischer and Rob Hall-were caught in a ferocious blizzard. Disoriented and out of oxygen, climbers struggled to find their way down the mountain as darkness approached. Alone and climbing blind, Anatoli Boukreev brought climbers back from the edge of certain death. This new edition includes a transcript of the Mountain Madness expedition debriefing recorded five days after the tragedy, as well as G. Weston DeWalt's response to Into Thin Air author Jon Krakauer.

Into Thin Air take a back seat..........2007-09-09
Hands down beats out Into Thin Air. Thrash that 'other' novel and read this!
Far Superior to Into Thin Air!!.......2007-06-11
I've read most of the 96' Everest books and this phenomenal read surpasses Krakauer's slick narrative with simple language but raw and honest passion and consideration. If you have already read Into thin Air I strongly recommend reading this as well. It not only places the hyped 96' tragedy in better perspective, it also gives incredible insight into the Russian mindset.
Awesome book.......2007-05-10
I read this book after reading "Into Thin Air" (another excellent book). This is a highly recommended followup to "Into Thin Air". If you are interested in the business/logistics of an Everest expedition, as well as hearing about an amazing individual (Anatoli Boukreev), this book is highly recommended!
A great read.....very compelling........2007-02-12
What could have been written as an angry rebuttal to the slanted writings of Jon Krakauer's accountings of the 1996 Everest disaster, is actually a moving recounting of a tragedy that has no one single point of blame. Anatoli Boukreev details the series of fateful decisions made by the several parties involved, and drives home the ultimate message: Climbing Everest, and any peak above 8000 meters is, under the very best conditions, a life-threatening gamble with fate. This book is a must read for we armchair Everest buffs, and anyone who has read "Into Thin Air". Anatoli Boukreev was a legend and hero, and we are fortunate to have his words recorded before his tragic death .
The other side of a well-known story.......2007-01-01
Every story has two sides. In this book, readers of Jon Krakauer's best selling Into Thin Air can hear the other side of that particular tale. It's my opinion that no one ought to read one without also reading the other.
On May 10, 1996, a winter storm decided to attack the world's highest mountain in spring. Caught in the well-named Death Zone, so high above sea level that the bodies of climbers who linger there literally start to die, the members of two commercial expeditions fought desperately for survival. The leaders of both teams - New Zealander Rob Hall, and American Scott Fischer - died despite being world-class mountaineers and Everest veterans. So did three members of Hall's team, while a fourth barely got off the mountain alive. All of the Fischer guides and clients survived, though, and none suffered the kind of horrific frostbite that left Hall client Beck Weathers both maimed and disfigured. Why did things turn out so differently for the two teams, after both lost their leaders? Krakauer's book offers one answer. This book, co-authored by Scott Fischer's head guide, offers quite another.
Neither Anatoli Boukreev nor his co-author possesses Krakauer's well-honed journalistic skills. This is a much plainer work, in many ways; and it's definitely less readable. I found it just as compelling, though, and it's rich in source material. Thank goodness Boukreev completed it before his death, because his side of the story is well worth hearing.
