Excellent Collection for Serious Knitters.......2007-10-04
Of all the many knitting books I own, this is the most well-used. I've had it for several years now and I still keep it near my knitting bag for when I need some inspiration. It is not for beginners but there is a lot for a beginner to learn and, by making two of the projects, I definitely improved my skills. The first thing I made was the Garter and Lace Shawl which is really quite simple until you come to the knitted on lace edge. That took a good deal of patience but, once I got the hang of it, it was fun and I've used that technique many times since. The second project I made was A Blue Wrap which is also quite easy and goes fast once you master the technique. I've used some of the lace patterns in other projects and it seems every time I open the book I get new ideas. This one is a classic.
Shawls and Scarves.......2007-09-22
It is a very nice book but not exactly what I had thought when I purchased it. I would have liked to have seen a written review on it before I purchased. It has too many exotic things for my taste.
Imaginative patterns.......2007-05-22
This is a great book of shawl patterns for experienced knitters. There are many original, lovely intricate patterns. There is very little here for beginners, but it is awesome for more advanced knitters or for intermediate folks who want to challenge themselves.

Fantastic book on shawls !!.......2006-10-11
Loved this book !! I've read it cover to cover a few times now, and like it more and more each time. Great photos of every project. Some history on specific shawls, which I appreciate. Lots of different folks' designs, which is nice. I'm an intermediate knitter but new to lace. About to start my first shawl, wish me luck !
Wonderful collection.......2006-10-11
This book contains a gorgeous varity of shawls, of all shapes (square, rectangular, triangular, faroese, and scarf length and width). The lace stitching varies too, from intermediate to advanced, and recommended yarns are lace through medium weight, depending on the project. Most are designed to be all one color, but a couple in the back use mutiple colors - very interesting and beautiful look. I am knitting my first project now, chosen because I already had the appropriate yarn- DK weight lightly brushed alpaca in a heathered purply-mauve color - that I am using to recreate the "featherweight fantasy", a rectangular shawl with fringe and a diamond-like lace pattern. It is so beautiful, I will miss it when I give it away as a gift this Christmas. Happy knitting to you~

Traditional Knitted Lace Shawls.......2007-08-26
This paperback book (119 pages) has only black and white pictures. It is mostly a book on knit stitches with a mere 8 patterns. She does touch briefly on the history and origin of knitting shawls. Overall, this is really more a book on how to design shawls, choosing different yarns and needle sizes and is not suited for someone who wants to be able to pick up a book; find a pattern; and know which yarn to use.
condensed revision of first edition.......2007-03-06
I've got the first edition which was riddled with errors. I wanted charts so I ordered the second ed. The individual lace patterns are charted but the shawls are still written out. In addition, the number of shawls has decreased from 14 to 8. The book has been edited very tightly cutting down on anything excessive which includes some of the fun and some of the photos. However, it's still tops for help on designing shawls which is why it gets 5 stars from me. This ed still has a few corrections which are available from the publiser's website.
My review of Traditional Knitted Lace Shawls.......2006-11-04
I found out about this book on one of the knit list that I belong to. It was highly recommended as a great source for shawl knitters or those that want to learn about lace shawl knitting.
I have found it to be a great source for designing my own shawls as Martha Waterman has great imformation and lace knitting charts in the book. I highly recommend it to any one interested in lace shawl knitting or designing.
Shawl shapes and how to design your own.......2006-09-04
I'm new to lace knitting, but not new to knitting. I've become fascinated with lace shawls and was looking for a good introduction. This book is exactly what I was looking for.
After a brief introduction of the history of lace shawl knitting and the appropriate yarns to use, the author presents a detailed description of shawl shapes (triangle, square, rectangle, circle and halfcircle) and how to create them through increases and decreases. That's exactly what I wanted to know !!!
There are a few stitch patterns shown and a few complete projects to knit which are all helpful, but were not my main focus in buying this book.
If Ms. Waterman were ever to revise and expand this book, I would ask for a more detailed discussion of fitting stitch patterns into the various sections of the shawl while still at the same time shaping with increases and decreases. There is a brief discussion, but I could have used more details.
Now, with Martha's Waterman's explanations of the ways to construct the various shapes and my copies of Barbara Walker's First and Second Stitch Treasuries, I have everything I need.
Nice book.......2006-08-27
I am happy with this book. It has some example patterns and then a bunch of stitch patterns so you can create your own once you are comfortable with shawl making.
Book Description
Shawls are currently making a huge comeback in the fashion world, but many people do not realize that the shawl has been worn for many centuries and in many cultures. This collection of patterns and traditions features shawls from around the world. From the Himalayas to Spain, from Iceland to Japan, and from Mexico to Norway, many of the shawls featured here have been taken from examples of historic knitted shawls. Other designs have been translated into knitwear from patterns for woven or lace shawls. Included are 25 patterns as well as historical and cultural information about shawls that have been used for prayer and mourning, as bridal veils, and as christening garments. Each design is presented with a full-page color photo, written instructions, and charts.

Shawls.......2007-08-25
The Folk Shawls is interesting and informative with information about shawl styles from different cultures. The patterns are clear and easy to follow.
I love the historical background stories, and the knitting.......2007-05-04
I love the little ethnic/historical stories that go with each shawl. And that there are shawls from all over the world. These are the practical shawls that women can really use, not just museum pieces that will be used once for a special ocassion, wrapped in tissue and put away somewhere. The directions are clear and the drawings are great.
And, I liked seeing each shawl on the author. Seeing each one on the same person gives a sense of size and scale that you don't usually get from knitting books.
Nice practical book.......2007-05-02
This is a nice little book of shawl patterns. Although it lacks the sophistication of Victorian Lace Today and A Gathering of Lace with respect to elaborate lace patterns in the light weight lace yarns, it does present a collection of simple, utilitarian patterns in basic worsted weight yarns.
This is a good place for a beginning to intermediate knitter to start learning lace stitches and their effects. Furthermore the patterns provide immediate, attractive fabrics that serve a useful purpose. Although I didn't care much for the style of the Ruanna, it would easily "dress up" with the stitch design and color way for the Robozo in the same section. The Japanese Kimono shawl is a very nice leaf style stitch, which makes a lovely wrap and and allows the newcomer to lace patterns to gain a lot of practice without being overwhelmed by the number of non-repeating rows in a single design or the variety of patterns in combined design. The Aran pocket shawl is very clever, and would be easy for a new knitter to get started.
The photos are very nice, and while the ambiance of the background is not as impressive as the above books, the patterns themselves are well illustrated.
I have to order a second copy!.......2007-03-25
This book is fantastic. I'd like to make everyone of the shawls. So far I've made one, and started one some time ago from the pre issued pattern with mistakes. Now I've just cast on two more and since I'm traveling it has to go in my suitcase and I'll probably gift it to a knitting friend out in Indonesia. So I have to order a second copy! The shawls use lots of different weights of yarns and the patterns are beautiful and not difficult and the geographical background of the shawls makes it more interesting. I'd love to see her write a second book on shawls.
Wow what a book!.......2007-03-15
Any knitter will be pleased with this book of shawls, there are shawls for everyone's taste. It's a good idea to know your yarn weights well with working with this book for it calls for different weights. Lovely patterns worth making more then once.

Our Prayer Shawl Ministry.......2007-05-24
This book is excellent for any skill from beginner upwards in both crocheting as well as knitting. Many prayer shawls have been made from using the patterns found in this book. We have found the patterns to be totally correct. Although they are made for Lion Brand Yarn, other yarns may also be used to accomplish the projects.
Everyone to whom I have given a copy of the book as part of the service has been delighted with the variety of patterns. We recommend this book highly for any group embarking on a prayer shawl ministry.
Helpful for someone starting a shawl ministry.......2007-05-04
I recently started thinking about what crochet work I could do after I finished my last family afghan project and wondered what charitable opportunities there were for crocheters. An internet search revealed a number of great charitable causes and ministries, however, the one that most appealed to me was the shawl ministry. I looked at the websites of both The Shawl Ministry (where it all began) and Lion Brand for information and inspiration. I also looked at the websites of a number of faith communities which are doing shawl ministry.
Along the way, I discovered this book, The Prayer Shawl Ministry, by Leisure Arts and Lion Brand. I was hesitant to buy it because of concerns expressed by some reviewers, but after prayerful consideration, I bought the book and am pleased I did.
My reasons for buying the book: 1) I acknowledge I do much better with a crochet book in my hand, than with a pile of print outs of free patterns and information from the Internet. 2) The book seemed like a concise volume which I would find helpful and I didn't mind that the publisher would make a little money off my purchase. It's not the first time I've bought a book to use in ministry, knowing the book was clearly sold for profit by the author/publisher. 3) Some reviewers mentioned another book about shawl ministry, but from what I could tell it was for knitters and I am a crocheter. 4) I am starting a shawl ministry as a personal ministry and will not have the benefit of a group to support and encourage me, so having this book as a resource seemed appealing.
I now have the book in hand and am pleased I bought it. The book includes a few prayers, which can be used throughout the process of making a prayer shawl and there are some suggestions on how to do the ministry. The book highlights three churches doing shawl ministry in the Little Rock, Arkansas area (home of Leisure Arts). There are also four crochet patterns and four knit patterns for shawls/throws. All are Easy and use a simple repetitive pattern that can be meditative in nature. (And yes, one of the crochet patterns and one of the knit patterns are available for free from the Lion Brand website.)
My only issue with the book and why I rated it four stars rather than five is a section of stories from those who have used the Lion Brand Homespun yarn and how the yarn was helpful in their shawl ministry projects. There is helpful information in these stories, especially for someone new to shawl ministry, but I had to get my brain past the Lion Brand marketing in these stories.
Despite the marketing aspect, this is a helpful book for those starting a shawl ministry. In addition to purchasing this book, I would also encourage people to check out the Shawl Ministry website and the websites of the many religious communities who are doing this ministry for additional help and inspiration.
7/19/07 Update to my original 5/4/07 Review: I have now bought (through Amazon) a copy of the knitting book I referenced above, called "Knitting Into the Mystery". Even though it is written by knitters from a knitting perspective, I could easily relate to it as a crocheter. "Knitting into the Mystery" is a spiritual book filled with stories and prayers, and in my mind, it is a good companion to "The Prayer Shawl Ministry" book, which is more of a concise "how-to" book. Both books are good in different ways.
The Prayer Shawl Ministry: Reaching Those in Need.......2007-03-08
This book is great! I have made several shawls and the receprients appreciate them so much.
The Works of the Lord.......2007-03-08
This is an awesome guide to the Prayer Shawl Ministry. I recommend it to every congregation so that people all around the world can create beautiful shawls for those in need.
This book is a must!.......2007-02-11
Prayer Shawl Ministry: Reaching Those in Need is a must for anyone who would like to become involved in prayer shawl ministry. The patterns are simple to read and easy to use for both knitters and crocheters. The book also contains information about starting a prayer shawl ministry and how it helps those who are grieving or need a lift. Highly recommended!
Book Description
Knitters-there are 38 million of them in the United States alone-are part of a long and quiet tradition that's both plainly practical and deeply spiritual. With needles clicking, they weave together not just garments to warm the body but also comfort and companionship to nurture the soul.
This tradition is flowering today through knitting ministries, a worldwide ecumenical movement of small groups of women who gather to pray and knit for those in need. As they create shawls for people burdened with illness and sorrow, their handiwork becomes an expression, not only of their love and concern, but also of the loving care of the God who works through them.
In this beautifully illustrated book, the authors-a United Church of Christ minister and a Roman Catholic laywoman-share stories of how the knitting ministry has touched lives and hearts around the world. They offer directions for knitting the shawls and for starting a parish or community knitting ministry. The book also provides a selection of prayers, written from many faith traditions, to offer along with each completed shawl.

A must have and read.......2007-08-01
This is a must have and must read for anyone who is interesting in being Blessed to be a Blessing. It is just the best.
prayer is powerful.......2007-07-31
I find that prayer is powerful no matter what. I have been knitting for years but I have never encountered this ministry before. I read the history behind this ministry and I was, needless to say, impressed and blessed. To think that all the craft items I have given away before this; I could have prayed for these people through these projects. Prayer does work in mysterious ways. A friend of mine borrowed this book before I had a chance to read it and she said that it was a humbling experience. Our church will be starting a similar ministry. A must read for anyone and everyone!
Wonderful Spirit-Filled Book - Recommended for Crocheters Too.......2007-07-19
Because the title of this book says "Knitting", I had wondered how helpful it would be for a crocheter interested in shawl ministry. Based on other Amazon reviews, I took a chance and am glad I did so. While the authors are clearly knitters and write from that perspective, I could easily relate to the stories they told and to the ideas they shared on shawl ministry. This is not a pattern book (although it includes a basic knitted shawl pattern and a basic crocheted shawl pattern), but rather it is more of a spiritual book filled with stories, prayers and quotes from various faith traditions, as well as suggestions on how to do shawl ministry. Just reading the book gave me such a spiritual lift and provided me with inspiration for my shawl ministry.
Knitting into the Mystery.......2007-06-11
It was a book recommended to me by a friend who is already in the Prayer Shawl ministry and gave more reality into the need for personal ministries such as this.
Just reading it is a blessing.......2007-05-13
This is a beautiful book. I felt a joy coming through the writing that was like a prayer itself. The project directions and group suggestions are clear yet lovingly open to allow and encourage individual creativity. I can highly recommend this book.

Customer Reviews:
Cynthia Ozick at her most emotionally gripping!.......2007-10-01
Their is no denying that Ozick is a brilliant writer. Her work breaths
pure brilliance. Ozicks' prose are generous, rich and reaching somewhere between epic poem or prolific essay. She is everything that you expect from a Jewish writer. But in the Shawl you see Ozick at her most sensitive and raw. Though everything is beutifully expressed, Ozick brings a sense of emotional heartache that you just don't see in any of her other work. And unlike many of her male counterparts, Ozicks', "Rosa," manages to capture a whole life, and a few others, in a scant sixty of seventy pages. A must read to short story fans.
Decent read..........2007-07-13
Cynthia Ozick's "The Shawl" tells the story of Jewish women, her fourteen year old niece (Stella), and infant daughter on a death march to a concentration camp. Rosa, the mother is afraid that if her infant daughter Magda is found by the Nazi officer's that she will be killed, therefore she keeps her hidden away in her shawl throughout the entire march, and much of the time that they are in the camp. Rosa's fourteen year old niece, Stella, is jealous of the comfort that Magda has with her shawl during this horrific experience. Stella decides to take Magda's shawl one day while in the camp to warm herself from the cold, thus causing her to be discovered and killed. The characters in a story may give you a sense of actually being present in the events taking place in the story.
However, the section titled Rosa was a bit more confusing as one has to read in and out of her open verbal thoughts (speaking) and personal thoughts about those whom she encounters.
A disturbing and moving work .......2007-02-06
This short work telling of the death of a child in the Shoah, and the subsequent life- destroying effect on the mother of the child is a disturbing and moving one. The symbolic 'shawl' connects the two parts of the work. It had helped keep baby Magda alive in a concentration camp, , and fifty years later the Mother Rosa holds on to as if it contained within it the life of her dead baby. Ozick's writing is brilliant especially in her depiction of the aging survivors in Miami. A note of hope enters in the figure of an elderly suitor Persky who attempts to woo Rosa back to a life of her own. But as Ozick makes painfully clear the message of Rosa's life is that what has been most loved in the past is far more real than any present or future can be.
beautiful.......2006-04-25
Is there a better writer out there? I cannot imagine one. Ozick is a powerful writer -- a magician, in the truest sense of the word. This short book is actually two long stories that originally appeared in the New Yorker. Both segments contain mostly the same people, but at 40 years distance. In the first part, Stella and Rosa, along with Rosa's baby, are force marched and then imprisoned as Jews by the [...]. Through a sort of fantasy, the baby is kept alive for a period of time through the use of the shawl mentioned in the title. 40 years later, Rosa is spiritually still in the camp, though she lives in Miami Beach. When asked about her life, she says it was stolen from her. I won't say anything else except to say that this is so affecting that you won't be able to read it unmoved. I highly recommend this book.
jam packed with excitment.......2005-04-19
"The Shawl" was an exciting adventure that brought me from Rosa's young/middle ages to her elder ages. It brought me through a various range of emotions very quickly. Once you start the book it will be hard for you to put it down. It's a nice brief book jam packed with excitement. Since it is a brief book the level of excitement stays at that same level it starts out as.
Rosa Lublin, the main character has a very hard time in the beginning of the book when she sees her baby daughter, Magda, get killed. That was the hardest thing she has to deal with while being in the Nazi Holocaust. After her hard ships she winds up settling down in Florida. She's a loner, only because she can't let go of her past. But eventually finds her way back to reality after a little help. The author, Cynthia Ozick, has a way of blending everything, emotions, objects, thoughts, hallucinations, ect, into the fast pace book.
I strongly recommend this book to people who can keep up with its fast pace adventure, and who are interested in concentration camps. However if you are a person who wants a real cheerful book this one isn't for you.

Great Inspiration.......2007-03-02
I am a novice knitter and I love this book! As a beginner, I wouldn't have thought of some of the yarn combintations suggested in the patterns, but they are wonderful. True, the patterns are very basic (great for this beginner), it's the yarn selections that make these styles so interesting.
Novice Knitter.......2007-01-23
I'm so new to knitting but want to be able to craft nice things. Hammett's book is a big help in making novice patterns look beautiful using a variety of specialty and standard yarns. I look forward to doing more of the patterns that she shares in her book and hope to improve my craft.
Scarves and Shawls for Yarn Lovers.......2007-01-10
Very simple patterns with novelty yarns. Not worth the price as any knitter can do this. Good for beginners, but not useful for more experienced knitters.
truly amazing scarves.......2007-01-09
with basic kitting patterns you can make some amazing scarves and shawls. Directions are clearly written with pictures of examples in different yarns. I've made several scarves and a shawl for gifts each turn out wonderfully and were enthusiastically received. You'll never be stuck again of what do with the many differnt yarns now available.
Scarves.......2006-11-20
Very nice book. Lot's of ideas for gifts and personal items.
Thank you.

As promised.......2007-10-04
Fast shipping, as promised, great transaction and I look forward to buying from this seller again.
Not my taste - but it might be yours.......2007-09-17
I have Lace Style by the same authors, and I love it. It's got a variety of innovative, wearable designs. Not every design is for me, but there is enough variety that I found several things I like, and I know my friends will find other things they like, etc.
With this book, the styles mostly seem very similar, and they just don't appeal to me, except for one crochet style and one simple wrap.
I also bought Wrapped in Comfort, which I love, it has light, airy, lovely circular shawls couple with stories I enjoyed reading. Plus I prefer knitting lace vs. intarsia or cables.
I think, however, this might just be a matter of taste. If you think you'd like to make capelets, which are definitely in style right now, take a look at both books and see which suits your tastes better, and your knitting pleasure.
Beautiful creations!.......2007-07-30
This is a great book. Not for the beginning knitter, but once you've gotten the basics under your belt, this book contains patterns that will look great with any outfits. I highly recommend this very beautifully done book.
Will use again!.......2006-10-10
I recently knit the Swallowtail Shawl, and found the pattern to be clear, simple, and easy to memorize. I will definitely go back to this book again.
Another reviewer noted that there was an error in the pattern- frequently, if there is an error, an 'errata' correction is available somewhere on the web- do a search for 'errata' and the book or pattern or pattern writer's name, and you will find the corrections.
Nice ideas -- bad editing.......2006-09-13
As a newcomer to knitting, I found several starter-level pieces in this book -- all very unusual and well designed. Or so it appeared.... I ended up having to carry the book into my local yarn shop for help deciphering a pattern -- only to find that the pattern really was incomplete. Several steps and notations had been left out, making it confusing for the experienced knitters in the shop that day, and damn near impossible for a newbie to figure out.
Additionally, the photography, while beautiful, is excessive and redundant. How many full page images of the same garment from the same direction do we really need?
I have found cookbooks where key ingredients or instructions were omitted in order to keep the recipe secrets out of print -- and that's what this poorly edited book reminded me of. --As though they wanted others to fail at duplicating their designs.
Too bad.
Book Description
Knitters are a breed unto themselves. They speak their own language, and they harbor a passion for their craft that takes a strong hold, blocking out troubles and worry, whenever they pick up the needles. But knitters are not exclusionary—all are welcome into the warm circle once you appreciate the beauty of hand-spun and dyed yarn, the sense of focus that comes with starting a new project, and the joy of creating something beautiful to share with a loved one. In their first book,
KnitLit: Sweaters and Their Stories, Linda Roghaar and Molly Wolf brought together a heaping stash of stories by knitters and for knitters that spoke to the power of knitting in people’s lives. Now, without a single dropped stitch, here is
KnitLit Too: Stories from Sheep to Shawl.
Featuring another rich array of contributors,
KnitLit Too includes folksinger Christine Lavin and writers Perri Klass, Lesléa Newman, and Suzanne Strempek Shea. Featured as well are stories by a third-grader who picks up the needles for the first time, a mother waiting to wrap her soon-to-be-adopted child in the blanket she made for him, a sister upstaged by her Merchant Marine brother who just so happens to be a natural knitter, a man who is forced to admit to the new woman in his life that, yes, he knows how to knit, and a young girl living with her mother in a battered women’s shelter who is brought back from the brink when she learns to knit. Rounding out these heartwarming true tales are original poetry, meditations, fiction, and even a mystery, all about knitting. KnitLit Too features more than 70 pieces, some sweet and touching, others inspirational or hilarious, and all woven together by the dedication and devotion that knitters feel for a cherished hobby that is for many a way of life.
Customer Reviews:
Amazingly diverse little book,.......2005-09-19
Given the somewhat narrow topic, the variety of stories really surprised me. Great stories about the lives of knitters from just about every walk of life. Some of them make great family read-alouds.
Put the knitting down and read for a few minutes.......2004-05-27
I thought this book was excellent, a great read for any knitter. The editors did a nice job selecting a wide variety of essays. I especially enjoyed the vest for a boyfriend story.
better the second time.......2004-05-24
I loved this book, finding the selection and variety of stories funny and interesting. So I bought Knit Lit One and was very disappointed. Skip the first one and go straight to Knit Lit Two!
