His technique sounds like a car salesman's tip sheet: his main rule is FMAC--find, meet, attract, close. He employs the "three-second rule"--always approach a woman within three seconds of first seeing her in order to avoid getting shy. Other tricks: Intrigue a beautiful woman by pretending to be unaffected by her charm; also, never hit on a woman right away. Start with a disarming, innocent remark, like "Do you think magic spells work?" or "Oh my god, did you see those two girls fighting outside?" After two years, Strauss ends up becoming almost as successful as Mystery, but he comes to an important realization. This was one of the most fascinating and entertaining books I've ever read. Besides getting an inside look at the society of pick-up artists, I gained some interesting insight into human psychology. It's written in a wonderful narrative, story style which made it hard to put down.

It is a must read, whether you're interested in learning about how to pick up women or you're just wanting to read a great true story.

Not a pickup guide - but worth the read.......2007-10-06

I recently purchased this book after reading the many favorable reviews on Amazon.com.

First off, this isn't a "how to pick up girls" book, though the process is covered in some depth. Instead, it is a story of a man's search for himself and purpose in life by learning the techniques of the master pickup artists. Sound shallow? I thought so too until I began to read some more.

What starts as an innocent enough goal (to be more successful with women) ends up becoming an obsession for the author, who is short, balding, and not generally considered to be attractive. Neil Strauss (who goes by the name "Style") makes the slow but steady transition from AFC (average, frustrated chump) to mPUA (master pickup artist).

As a single man in his late 20's, I can easily identify with the author's initial challenges. Approaching a beautiful woman is an intimidating prospect, especially for men with low self-esteem - nevermind that they have no idea what to say. However, under the wings of the mPUA Mystery, Style comes into his own and seems to have no problem picking up any woman he sets his eyes on.

Along his journey, the reader is introduced to a variety of strange characters, from pickup wannabees to psychotic women.

The book is great for anyone - men or women, who would like a glimpse of the pickup community.

I've read a bunch of these books on how to meet women and usually I don't bother to write a review - they are so bad. I read The Mystery Method: How to Get Beautiful Women Into Bed and thought it was good. In hindsight it would have been better to read The Game first. It just seems like the books fit better together that way and you should definitely read both. The story in this book is what makes it worth while. Forget the advice; you'll get all that from TMM and more but this book is the story and that makes it all the better, as you get to see the techniques in use. Perhaps the best point in the book is "Juggler was right; humor is the best way to get women." That is an interesting point because while both books talk about confidence and humor and while Juggler and some other guys have it, most of the other guys, including the author himself, don't really develop it - they just rely on all kinds of lines and schemes to impress women. To that end along with this book you must read God Is a Woman: Dating Disasters, which is by a comedian and which does include lots of in-depth pointers on building real confidence and humor. Without a doubt, these are the three books to read on women and I truly appreciate these guys putting their embarrassing moments out there for the rest of us to learn from.

I'll keep it short and simple since I have already wasted more time (and $) than this book and its 'secrets' reveal. The best I can say about the book is this: If you're about to turn legal age to get into a bar you will find some pointers. Otherwise you'd be better off reading books on interpreting body language (ones that go beyond twirling a necklace and licking ones lips) and books on NLP (both of which will help you out in situations where woman exist beyond bars and present more subtle clues to their interest in you than the aforementioned sorority college girl bar-fly signals.)

I read Leil's "How to Make Anyone Fall in Love With You" which is, without a doubt, the BEST book on sex and dating ever written. So, naturally, I had to check out "Undercover Sex Signals." I saw it was written for men but I thought, what the heck, maybe I can learn something. It arrived on a Saturday afternoon when I had several girlfriends over.

We were screaming and laughing all afternoon because IT IS SO TRUE!!! Looking at the photographs of the models, we realized that is EXACTLY what we do when we see a guy we like. Sometimes it's subconscious and WE don't even realize we're doing it. For example, if we spot a guy we like, we unconsciously touch or necks or nervously play with our jewelry. We primp (especially when we think he's not looking.) We even hold our glass or cross our legs differently when we like a guy.

And here's something you don't get. Whenever any guy smiles at us, we usually look away. It's just a game but almost all guys take it as being rejected. NO! NO! NO! That's just the beginning where you should start watching and see if we look back. If we DON'T like you, we DON'T look back. But, if we DO, we ALWAYS look back to check if you're still looking at us.

And of course we sit up straighter if we like you. Leil calls that one "Undercover Sex Signal #20, "The Perk-up." It's subconsciously thrusting our breasts out.

A woman can ALWAYS tell if another woman digs a guy. But men NEVER seem to. It's because one woman recognizes another's signals. Anyway, my girlfriends and I spent hours hooting and hollering and saying, "God, if guys only knew how obvious this stuff is."

This book It hit me like a ton of bricks. It was like, "D'uh, why didn't I get it before?" Chicks are so obvious, and we are, as the author says, so dense! If a hottie does something as simple as rub her neck or play with her hair after she looks at you, it means she wants you to approach

OK, here's just one example of what you'll learn in the book. You smile at a woman at a bar, a party, or anywhere -- and she looks away. So you think she doesn't like you. Dummy! Here's the truth. If she looks DOWN and away, it means she does like you. (This is USS #3 out of 26.) Now, set your watch. If she looks up again at you in 45 seconds, it means she is definitlay game.

Now, if she looked away from you with her eyes PARALLEL to the floor like around the wall, it's 50/50. Maybe she likes you. Maybe not.

She gained a lot of the wisdom she shares from the beautiful women she hung with. And she looks pretty hot herself.

It's the most helpful book I ever read on making it with women. It's changed my love (er, sex) life.

Despite all the criticism this book has received, I can say that I've thoroughly enjoyed it. It is EXTREMELY difficult to understand how life is for someone like Abdu (Ibrahim), who, as an under-the-radar (of the immigration patrol), under the books mechanic, lives a life so far-removed from the comforts of a "developed" nation such as America. The grammar is hazy because where Ibrahim lives, communication is more through gestures and circumstance than through words alone. They say that about four-fifths of human communication is non-verbal, in fact. In order to fully comprehend this book, one must look beyond the blatant and use one's imagination to empathize with Ibrahim's third-world way of life, which has many cultural norms that are not found in American society, such as religious fanaticism.

Attempts at profound themes veil sparse, unsatisfying plot........2007-08-10

From the first sentence in The Pickup, the reader is immediately overwhelmed with Gordimer's, shall we say, unique style. Her terse sentences, combined with lack of punctuation and direct characterization, make the plot rather hard to follow. Gordimer too largely spares descriptions of the character's appearances and day-to-day life, making them seem distant and almost inhuman, further muddying the waters. Once the reader discovers the plot, however, he or she realizes that there isn't much to analyze anyways.

It seems to me like Gordimer simply stretched out a short story's plot and made it novel-length, adding in her "profound" observations about the bourgeois society and Middle Eastern culture. Her observations are somewhat superficial and obvious, though they do show evidence of a global viewpoint. Still, these observations nearly crumble under the flimsy skeleton of a plot that there is.

The description on the book jacket literally takes the reader halfway through the novel; if the book started halfway through, practically the same result would be accomplished. The ending was quite frustrating and made the characters' decisions seem completely, well, out-of-character. A side plot or two provide little except a distraction and more paper. It would not surprise me if Gordimer had good insight into inter-racial relationships, however she certainly chose the wrong vehicle to display that insight in The Pickup.

This must be a form of English deconstructionalism. Gordimer doesn't like standard rules of English. There are no quotation marks, no conjunctions and often words pile up without a hope of understanding them. She likes dashes, italics and commas--forget the rest. (It does make writing much easier, I admit.) So the reader has to sort through and often wonder if this is done just to tweak the ugly capitalist Western reader.

Still the story involved a good enough plot for me to agree to 4 stars. While I found the storyline to be close to a fantasy, I didn't toss it or give it away--I continued wondering why it won the Nobel Prize in Literature. Of course, the ending would be the reason.
Imagine any tight-knit family with strong religious ties anywhere in the world and then imagine the ease that a non-religious stranger/wife would have in joining their household--living together amicably without rancor or suspicion. Only in a fantasy, would you have acceptance of the stranger without a big struggle. Even the body knows to reject foreign matter, sometimes to its own demise.

Gripping but needs a good editor.......2006-08-30

This is a fascinating, gripping story, a good read that opened my eyes to life in South Africa and an (unnamed) poor Arab country. My only objection is with the writing. Gordimer has an unconventional style that often dispenses with standard grammatical conventionn (like poetry does). The writing style gives the whole story a feel of urgency and a dream-like quality. So far--fine! But sometimes the effect is gibberish. You constantly have to go back and reread sentences. The writing diverts you from the story and forces you to think about Nadine Gordimer and her editor. What were they thinking? Maybe that good literature should be difficult and obscure? That hard authors are especially profound? Sorry--I don't buy it. If sentences cannot be understood without being reread 2-3 times, that means they were poorly proofed and edited. That's all.

Worth the time.......2006-06-12

This book, in keeping our expectation from the author is exceedingly well written. While not a fun or easy book, it is worth the effort. I generally devour books in a day or two, but this was one to be taken a bit at a time. The story rings true. This is not a story designed to make you smile.

Never touched my 82 rabbit until now.......2002-04-29

I have been curious about automotive repair since I own a rabbit with 303,000 miles and counting. I needed to replace the rear struts and wheel bearings, glow plugs, lights, and oil pump. The book covers all areas well with very good details and drawings. However, for the glow plugs it says something stupid as "it's like changing a spark plug" and that was it. No it's not. It's pure hell. You have to remove the injector lines and hoses and the first 2 injectors to have some work space and replace the heat shields on the first 2 injectors when putting it back. Other that I have really enjoyed this book.

Limited Electrical.......2003-08-17

The book barely mentioned the trip/mileage computer much less what to do to troubleshoot, remove and replace or what else might cause a blank screen. I was very disappointed that even the wiring diagrams showed nothing concerning this unit. Also to try and track down the circuit involved the book gave no help on basics such as the fuses involved.

The manual covers too many vehicles in general with little detail for specifics. It's difficult to find what your looking for. If you need a manual, try the dealer. I've had bad luck with Chilton in the past, I should have known.

Easy does it..........2002-04-08

I recently purchased a 1997 Expedition, but couldn't find the owners manual. I ordered this book with hopes of clarifying some basic information. I think this book has quite a bit of data, but it is hard to read, index, and otherwise unfriendly. For example, the fuse box section does not tell you which fuses relate to which piece of equipment, making troubleshooting tough. The section on sizes and capacities is so small and marked with footnotes, I still don't know what size fuel tank I have. Also, too many models covered in this manual that aren't important to me, and too few pictures. I'm gonna try the Haynes version.

IT is a very good manual but not up to the calibre of bentleys other manuals. Some things are hardly covered at all for example the carburetor system or scirocco wiring for different models.

I bought this book so as to diagnose a problem with my transmission & torque converter. I found it to be pretty much useless. The pictures didn't show what I needed to see; the wiring diagrams weren't for the right year; the vacuum line diagrams for the vacuum lines that operate the hardware that actually puts the vehicle into 4wd were non-existent. If your jeep is stuck at the bottom of a hill somewhere due to the front drive line ripping the wires off the connector that goes to the neutral switch & back up lights don't look to this manual for help!

FSJ great for newbies, but get The FSM!.......2002-02-19

Not bad, but get the Factory repair service manual, which is more accurate. Some wire diagrams are different.. good for the newbie, but better get some advice first, like Always use Quadra-trac fluid
in Transfer case, never anything else, the Friction cones will not tolarate it, since it is a full time 4 wheel drive. ( from 73-79 borg -warner)

As a beginner in home car mechanics I found this book very helpful. It helped me already with understanding my Jeep Wagoneer '73 (V8, 360). And I used it to replace the powerbrake booster, the powersteering pressure line, rear suspencion leaves, door window, door lock and so on. New jobs are coming and this book wil help me, I sure...

haynes lightweight information.......2000-02-01

I found the information for a 1988 Jeep Cherokee to be vague, superficial, and many times, incorrect. This might be due to production changes in the 1988 year. In looking for information on automatic transmissions, ignition system, engine control computer, or transfer case dissasembly or repair, the book says that this is beyond the home mechanic. Well, few other repairs even require a book for anyone with reasonable experience. I believe they are copping out. It was not worth reading.

Barry Dutter's book Shy Guide to Dating gives valuable advice to the lovelorn. His common sense, no nonsense approach shows how an introverted guy can date and eventually marry a nice girl. I truly appreciated that the author was formerly a "shy" guy who writes from the perspective of a person who has figured out how to meet girls and now what to share with others. The chapter titled, "Best Places to Meet Girls" was probably the most helpful to me. The author has obviously been to hundreds of bars, nightclubs, discos and through trial and error has developed a system to talk to girls. These techniques can save a shy guide from many lonely and dull nights in a bar.

Dutter's many anecdotes about the dating world were both helpful and motivational. Knowing that a fellow shy guide, armed with some proper strategies, could enter the dating world, certainly embolden me. My only suggestion is that, since the book was published before the Internet explosion, an updated version is needed with the author tackling such issues as email, instant messaging and social networking sites such as friendster,myspace and facebook.

While the premise is decent enough, the material and suggestions offered by the author are dreadful. Why its a mainstay in the dating section of mega bookstores is a bigger mystery than how the Steelers won the Superbowl.

Hopefully guys realize at this stage in the game that 'pickup lines,' no matter how clever or nuanced, simply don't work. Why? Because while giving you a moment's attention, most are either crude or insulting, forcing a woman to respond in a way drenched in irritation. And compliments come off trite or insincere.

Far better to engage people in social settings with a set routine that conveys all the best qualities about you.

If you're looking for great material to approach women, look elsewhere.

Entertaining read but not help at all.......2005-12-05

I read this book hoping to learn some things about getting women but come away just as inept. The book is written with humor making it an easy read but the advice is basically useless. I was also a little upset when I noticed the back cover and the very good looking author that adorns it. The guy is an adonis. He must think we're all fools to try to convice us that he's bad with girls. NO WAY! It's a slap in the face. That guy can get women without even opening his mouth because he's that good looking. I don't care how "bad" he thinks he is with girls. He can tell them he likes lunchmeat and they'll be all over him. Basically what I learned is that you get girls by being born with the skill. No amount of teachings will ever help. So I take with me the knowledge of never purchasing another "How To" book about getting girls because now I'll know better. Hope this helps.

This stuff is for desperate CHUMPS. There is nothing in here about how to get inside a woman's mind and access her deepest emotions, which is how to appeal to a woman. The saying most definitely applies here---if you do what you've always done, you will get what you've always gotten, which is, REJECTED. This book is filled to the rim with what MOST men have always done---look needy and desperate, belt out cheesy lines, and give her every indication that you are JUST LIKE ALL THE REST OF THEM.

Don't even bother with this one. You will NOT find anything of even miniscule value in this jokebook.

OH MY GOD I can't believe it got published........2005-03-07

I don't even know where to begin to describe how worthless this boook is.

It's mainly a bunch of trite dribble that leaves you going "Well, duh!" I mean, this author comes across with this attitude that he has all these dating secrets figured out and he's this enlightened dating master when the fact is that this is very basic stuff that anyone with even minimal social skills has already figured out a long time ago. And if your social skills are so bad that you actually benefit from any of the advice in this book, you can pretty much forget about dating women. Well, forget about dating attractive ones, anyway.

This author writes things that are either already widely-known, worthless, or both, then has the audacity to actually go "There, now you know blah blah whatever it was." What a loser!!

Examples: this guy actually advises you to use the old "Mistaken Identity Ploy", in which you start a conversation with a girl by acting like you recognize her from somewhere. Come on!! Sure, it could work, but that's not the point. The point is I already knew that one!! Everybody does!! If you're selling a book on something, put some original material in it!!

This guy also recommends walking up behind a girl and tapping her on the shoulder. He says it sends a clear message that she's the one you're interested in. Is he serious? I can't think of anything more rude than being tapped on the shoulder, and I've seen idiots in nightclubs do it. EVERY time, the girl turns around, looks at him, realizes she's just been touched by someone she doesn't know, turns back around, and ignores him. You can bet that nothing that guy does for the rest of the night is going to get that girl talking to him.

As a bouncer, I cannot count the times I've been approached by pretty girls and asked to grab some moron by the scruff of the neck and throw him out of the club for doing most of the useless, extremely unadvisable crap in this worthless book. I don't often return books, but this one's going RIGHT back to the store RIGHT NOW.

A must have for your vehicle.......2007-04-02

This manual is the first resource I go to everytime I need to work on my truck. The information it provides is informative and very helpful. It does NOT give incedibly detailed information about many things but provides the right information to get you started in the right direction. With the slight variances manufacturers make from year to year. (i.e. wiring diagrams, fuse locations, etc.) it would be almost impossible to cover every detail. With this manual, some background knowledge, and some additional resources, you should be able to do any task you have the motivation, and tools, to undertake.

Good Advice.......2007-01-17

Excellent Book! A lot of great ideas to get the house in order. One of the things I especially like are her suggestions for including kids of all ages in practical matters around the house. Get your two year old to clean?! She offers many idea on how to do it. From that angle, her ideas are rather "Montessoriesque", giving kids a challenge and a sense of accomplishment when their task is acheived.

I do agree, however, that some of her idea will not work with every house and family. (She really does like those disinfectant clothes. Not very economical.) But, if you take what you need and adapt if for your own needs, this book offers much.

Some good ideas, but some bad ones, too........2005-08-17

She has some good chore charts that are organized by the age of the child. Some very good room ideas too, but they're not always easy to find in the chapters.

However, some of her ideas on things other than cleaning are just bizarre.

For instance, she discusses carpools in great detail, even going so far as to say you should inquire about insurance levels of all the drivers. Well, gee, if you're going to do that, shouldn't you go as far as getting driving records from DMV too? And if you're really that worried about it, should you be doing the carpool thing at all?

And, be forewarned, this author has apparently never lived outside of a large metropolitan city, because for her, cell phones are a fact of life--she apparently has never lived nor traveled where there is no coverage. She is so dependent upon them, that when there was a minor injury to a friend's child, had practically a panic attack when she couldn't reach the parents (either didn't have the phone with them or turned it off). Cell phones are not foolproof, folks--they stop working, there are areas with no coverage, people turn them off, people leave them behind in the car or at home, people actually choose to ignore the ring, really! For someone so "organized", in this situation she came across as fairly helpless. Hopefully she learned her lesson and has a signed medical release form for her friend's kids somewhere, or better yet, taken a Red Cross First Aid class.

If she stuck to the cleaning issues only, the book is okay, although she seems very into disposable anti-bacterial wipes. Her other advice, well, it's good for a laugh. Buy used, after checking it out of the library first.

Why didn't I think of that?.......2004-06-16

I'm one of those moms who found it easier and faster to do all the housework myself. Now with teens in the house who won't lift a finger, I wish I'd read this book 10 years ago!
What's best about this book?
* Chore lists broken down by age brackets that make cleaning fun, even for toddlers.
* Surprising storage ideas for my always-cluttered garage.
* Smart ways to reorganize your kitchen to cut cooking time in half.
If you're starting a family, buy this book first. You'll thank yourself some day in the not-too-distant future when your kids not only take part, but have fun, sharing housework.

Great Help for Husbands & Dads.......2004-05-05

This book is amazing! Not only is it helpful, insightful, and informative but it is incredibly entertaining to read as well. From helping to motivate my family to get involved in household chores to practical ideas to organize my garage (always the dad's area of responsibility!)all the way to accommodating overnight guests - this book is the best how-to field guide for running a house that I have ever read. A real must for all members of the family but especially practical for husbands and dads.
