This book is a MUST for anyone pursuing peace in their life........2007-03-06
I have to say that besides the Bible, this book changed my life. This book defines in a way that is easy to understand and grasp how much Jesus loves us and the truth about who we are to Him.
This book helps you to understand the lie that satan wants us to believe. That our self esteem equals our performance and other people's opinion. Understanding this lie really changed my life.
In addition, the book gives you prayers to memorize in times of the enemy challenging your thinking and behavior. How to not fear rejection, how to overcome the fear of not meeting people's approval. I recommend this book to anyone who is ready to get this burden off their back. The burden of having everyone else's expectations rule your life. Get your freedom back by really understanding, in depth, how much God loves you and get back the peace in your life that you've been missing. I love this book!!!!! A++++++++++++
This book changed my life.......2007-01-23
This is a very inspiring book. Some of us are in bad relationships and we need to know that we do have value and can improve our life simply by understanding that we have value already. This book shows you how to understand that and apply it to your life.
Excellent book for spiritual growth.......2007-01-10
My husband and I are reading it together. I is helping us see the roots of our disagreements. It is helping us be more kind and understanding with one another.
Really Good!.......2007-01-03
This book really makes you take a second look at yourself. Parts of it are almost too in-depth for me, but I still would recommend the book. It would be a great book to study. Lots of knowledge to be gained!
An excellent resource.......2006-08-30
I read this book some years ago. I had been a Christian 6 years at that time, but its contents were earth-shattering. It woke me up to some of the basic truths of the application of Jesus Christ and His word in my life. It opened my eyes to lies I had believed that had literally tormented me for some years. It helped lay a very strong foundation of self-worth and of freedom, and as I now serve God in full time ministry I still draw on the truths that were so powerfully imprinted on my soul through reading the book. Like Billy Graham, I believe every Christian should read this book.

Book Description
It all started with a mysterious letter left at a tiny bookstore for authors Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black. Its closing lines: "We just want people to know about this. The stuff that has happened to us could happen to anyone." Little could they imagine the remarkable adventure that awaited them as they followed Jared, Simon, and Mallory Grace and a strange old book into a world filled with elves, goblins, dwarves, trolls, and a fantastical menagerie of other creatures. The oddest part is in entering that world, they didn't leave this one!
Five captivating books!
One thrilling adventure!

reading fantasy is fun.......2007-09-10
Reading a book that will be a movie in Feburary is fun for all ages. This book is full of imagination, magic and fantasy.
A Family Favorite.......2007-09-06
My kids can't get enough of these books! I have a 7 year old & a 5 year old, and we have read the books aloud to them. The 7 year old keeps trying to sneak the books away and read them himself, but we make him wait. They are an easy read--each book is about 100 pages, so it doesn't take long to read. The storyline is exciting for the kids. I'm glad we bought the boxed set, as you wouldn't want to buy just one! The five books make me think it's like one book broken into 5 parts.
Protesting the Price.......2007-09-05
These books are nice little fantasy stories, but I read the first one and couldn't bring myself to buy the others simply because you get so little book for your buck. At least the Series of Unfortunate Events, similarly packaged, were completely developed--and I thought they ran a bit short at the time! These Spiderwick books are more like 1/3 of a book each, or maybe even 1/4--and yet they're as much as 10 bucks a pop.
Anyway, the characters are pleasant and the central premise of a field guide to goblins and other fantastic creatures is a rich one. But I would want to see far more incredible story telling, and at a reasonable length, to invest in this series wholeheartedly.
Spiderwick Chronicles-- Not just for kids.......2007-08-25
I enjoyed many things about this book-- the artwork is enchanting and the storyline is inventive and as an adult reading this book - I was taken back to being a kid and loving every moment of being lost in the story and my own imagination. Great Read!
I'm 22 and I loved this set.......2007-08-24
My husband and I are into Fantasy and sci-fi books. We knew of Holly Black, and we love her other books. My husband loved the set and so did I. The pictures help give you a mental image of the people in the book, so as you read your mind has something to go off of. We plan on keeping this boxed set for when we have kids, I'm sure that they will love then just as much as we did.
Book Description
Hes a shape-shifting wolf, shes a psychic and his other half. In order to catch a killer he has to rely on his Seeing Eye Mate. Caelan Graham is on the hunt for a shape-shifter bent on killing female mates. As Prime, its Caelans duty to protect his entire pack, so its a good thing he doesnt have a mate of his own to look after right now. Too bad the most alluring female has just walked past his nose. As a clairvoyant, Tieran Jones has given up on men and their lack of understanding her giftuntil Caelan. The man ignites her passion, sets off a vision of a gruesome wolf attack, then shows up in her bed. In wolf form. To top it all off, he keeps insisting shes his mate. When the attacks continue, Tierans visions evolve and point in one direction. Caelans twin brother. With a lack of physical evidence, Caelan must depend on Tierans sight for clues. An act making her a prime target. Warning, this title contains the following: explicit sex, graphic language, and violence.

Loved it!.......2007-08-30
I just love a good werewolf romance. This book through me a curve ball. I thought I had the villain unmasked within a few pages and thought this sucks and it was going downhill from there. I kept with it and fell in love with the main characters. I was rooting for them. The "dead" grandma was enjoyable.
I'm getting the twin brother's story next.
Wolves on patrol.......2007-08-17
This story is different to other wolf/psychic romances. There is plenty of humour and sex in with the romance. The violence is'nt too bad, and I liked the heroine's attitude.
Thrilling and Passionate.......2007-07-09
This review originally posted at [...].
Tieran Jones is a psychic who has given up on men because of their lack of understanding when it comes to her gift. Caelan Graham is a shape shifter on the hunt for someone who kills female mates. Caelan is Prime and, as such, it is his duty to protect the entire pack.
Luckily for his pack, Caelan does not have a mate of his own to protect while searching for the killer. However, upon meeting Tieran, that all changes. Caelan's nose tells him that he has most assuredly found his mate. Caelan inflames Tieran's passion, sets off a grisly vision of a wolf attack, and somehow ends up in her bed in his wolf form. On top of everything else, Caelan insists that she is his mate.
Tieran's horrific visions continue and evolve as do the attacks on female mates. Although there is no physical evidence tying him to the crimes, Caelan's twin brother becomes the prime suspect based on Tieran's visions. Now Caelan must rely upon Tieran's gift to solve the mystery, one way or the other. But will Tieran survive the investigation as she becomes the prime target of a killer?
Seeing Eye Mate is the first of Annmarie McKenna's work that I've read. It is only her second published work but the writing is extremely professional and comparable to authors with many more published books. With the many twists to the story, this mystery is not easily solved and will keep the reader riveted to their seat until the final scene unfolds.
With this intriguing mystery as backdrop, the love story develops between strong alpha-male Caelan and his mate Tieran in satisfying and often unexpected manners. Caelan is a sensual and dominant male whose mate challenges him in some of the most tantalizing ways. This is a couple perfect for one another with a passion that sets the computer screen on fire.
After reading Seeing Eye Mate, I am sure that Annmarie McKenna is just beginning a long, and hopefully prolific, career in the publishing industry, with her readers and fans being the beneficiaries of that career.
great.......2007-06-09
loved this book/ would really like to see or read about a couple of gay/lesbian wolves from this author.
Great Werewolf (SHAPESHIFTER!) Supernatural Read.......2007-05-17
I think the hero is more suprise than the heroine.
Hero - Hi, I'm your mate and a shapeshifter.
Heroine - Hi, I can't touch people because it sets off my psychic abilities and I talk to me dead grandmother - a lot. So you're a werewolf?"
This book was a hilarious even with the crazed, violent pyscho in the background. It was really all about the coming to terms and loving every minute of each other with these chacters.

Book Description
From the day it was released in 2000, Keeping a Nature Journal has struck a profound chord among professional, casual, and occasional naturalists of all ages. In response to this groundswell of enthusiasm, we have revised KEEPING A NATURE JOURNAL, updated the interior design, and created a new cover. Undoubtedly the most exciting new element in this second edition is a portfolio of 32 illustrated pages from Clare Walker Leslie's most recent journals, reproduced in full color.
What makes KEEPING A NATURE JOURNAL so popular? It is inspiring and easy to use. Clare and co-author Charles Chuck E. Roth offer simple techniques to give first-time journal-keepers the confidence to go outside, observe the natural world, and sketch and write about what they see. At the same time, they motivate long-time journal-keepers to hone their powers of observation as they immerse themselves in the mysteries of the natural world. Clare and Chuck stress that the journal is a personal record of daily experience and the world around us. Nature's beauty can be observed everywhere, whether in the city, suburbs, or country.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent introduction to nature journaling.......2007-06-14
I bought this book unseen hoping to get some good ideas for a curriculum development project for elementary school kids I'm working on. I wasn't disappointed. This is a beautiful book. It's well written by 2 authors who are obviously passionate about the subject matter. Reproductions of Leslie's journal pages throughout the book also help you see the sorts of things that are possible and are a real inspiration. Her images are often quickly drawn and a little on the rough side, suggesting that anyone with a few minutes, a few colored pencils, a blank book, and a love for nature is capable of making a gorgeous nature journal. The book covers ideas for how to start a nature journal, the kinds of equipment you need, things you might want to keep an eye out for, and suggestions for improving your artistic skills. As I'd hoped, there is also a section for eductators who wish to use nature journals to teach people, young and old, about nature and the environment in which they live.
This book contains a lot of great information and the images from Leslie's journals are amazing. I think anyone who is into nature journals (as I am) would appreciate this book, as well as those who wish to start one.
Beautiful and Useable Book.......2006-08-11
I love this book- the art is absolutely beautiful and the general layout really shows it off. It talks about how to begin nature journaling, giving tips on both starting the habit and learning to draw! I love the approach it takes, fostering a closeness and syncronicity with nature and its cycles!
Love This Beautiful Book!!!.......2006-04-29
Our family loves this book - we love the examples from actual nature journals and it has really inspired myself and my children to keep our own nature journals. As we do so, we come to have a better appreciation for the amazing creations all around us. The author really helps to encourage even budding artists to keep nature journals, which helps some of the more timid artists in our family.
Wonderful teaching tool........2004-02-03
I coordinate outdoor workshops for women to provide them the opportunity to learn new skills. We hosted a new class,Nature Journaling, and the instructor needed a book to suplement her curriculum. I selected this book based on the Amazon recomendations and further research. Both the instructor and participants loved the book. It was very helpful and useful once they left the workshop.
I think this book is a great resource in any EE/nature/writing library.
Wonderful, inspiring book!.......2002-11-14
This book inspired me to start my own nature journal and gave me the confidence to draw in it! Wonderful, encouraging and instructional. If I can draw nature, then anyone can!

Optometry was never ever so interesting.......2005-08-31
Particularly for a budding Optometrist, this book allows the Optometrist to be acquainted with all the fine arts of optics and the like.
Seeing the Light.......2002-10-29
Book arrived in great shape. Like new!!
most missed book.......2002-08-21
This is the best textbook I ever had, and I sold it for some ($$$) at the end of a semester to buy a bus ticket. Very mad; I miss the book, but it's so expensive. It's amazing the way the author incorporates all sorts of literary allusions in this physics book, such as offering an interesting hypothesis on the optical illusion of the egyptians getting swallowed by the red sea while chasing the jews. Every chapter, light becomes a metaphor for so many things, the way we see, the obstacles, etc.
Physics of light for everyone else.......2000-06-15
I first discovered this book when I asked a physics professor down the hall for an explanation of diffraction and refraction in relation to some daytime sky phenomenon. He handed me Seeing the Light, and before long I coveted the volume. The authors dress down optical physics into explanations that anyone with a rudimentary knowledge of physics can understand, relating optical phenomenon to everyday events and objects. The diagrams and photos help clarify the explanation. And practical, hands-on suggested activities help drive the point home. This book would be great for physics teachers -- or teachers at any level. How about pinhole cameras or illusion drawings for class projects?
Book Description
Who is Jesus Christ?
You’ve never met him in person, and you don’t know anyone who has. But there is a way to know who he is. How? Jesus Christâthe divine Person revealed in the Bibleâhas a unique excellence and a spiritual beauty that speaks directly to our souls and says, âYes, this is truth.â It’s like seeing the sun and knowing that it is light, or tasting honey and knowing that it is sweet.
The depth and complexity of Jesus shatter our simple mental frameworks. He baffled proud scribes with his wisdom but was understood and loved by children. He calmed a raging storm with a word but would not get himself down from the cross.
Look at the Jesus of the Bible. Keep your eyes open, and fill them with the portrait of Jesus in God’s Word. Jesus said, âIf anyone’s will is to do God’s will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority.â Ask God for the grace to do his will, and you will see the truth of his Son.
John Piper has written this book in the hope that all will see Jesus for who he really is and will come to enjoy him above all else.
Customer Reviews:
A Wonderful Read!.......2007-06-08
This book has taught what it means to appreciate Christ in all his glory. How easy it is to for us to who Jesus really is. This book brings us back to gaze upon the majesty of the glory of our blessed Lord.
All About Christ (The way everything should be).......2007-05-04
What I like about this book, written for Christians and non-Christians, is that it is so full of Christ because I am so fed-up with man-centered gospel, that is all about me, all about men, by which, I refer to Arminianism and its stench that so defiles the gospel and is a disgrace to the glory of God. The only true gospel that can satisfy the deepest longing of men's soul is all about Christ, not men.
"God is the wealthiest person in the universe. He owns everyone else and everything everyone else owns." (p.83)
"Christ does not exist in order to make much of us. We exist in order to enjoy making much of him. Christ is not glorious so that we get wealthy or healthy. Christ is glorious, so that rich or poor, sick or sound, we might be satisfied in him." (p.21)
Amen! What I love in particular, among the biblical multi-dimensional views of the Lord Jesus Christ in this book, is the description Dr. Piper derived from one of Jonathan Edwards' texts, "The Excellency of Christ" (1736), which I also highly recommend, of Jesus being the "Lion-like Lamb" and the "Lamb-like Lion" (ch.3). The prayer at the end of each chapter is worth following and repeating in our personal prayers. These are prayers that come from a pastor who genuinely loves God and people I have learned to distingush from those of money-loving, world-loving, gospel-manipulating, man-centered, man-pleasing, self-centered preachers.
Savor the Savior.......2006-10-07
The healing of the soul begins by restoring the glory of God to its flaming, all-attractive place at the center (of our soul). (p.15)
There is no one who doubts there is something that needs healing in the human soul.
But the proposed cures are many, even in Christianity.
The fact that American Christians are largely just as dysfunctional as unbelievers is testimony that we largely haven't gotten the cure of the soul right.
To overuse a cliche', maybe we haven't kept the main thing the main thing.
The main thing is Jesus Christ. God created our souls to see and savor the glory of His Son.
That is what John Piper helps us to do in Seeing & Savoring Jesus Christ. In 124 pages Piper gives us portraits of Christ's deity, His power, His wisdom, His sacrifice, His mercy. Unbelievers will be confronted with the truth and the beauty of who Jesus is. Believers will get to lovingly gaze at their Savior.
Seeing & Savoring Jesus Christ is a wonderful book for personal devotions, group study, and outreach.
Fall in love with Christ again.......2005-11-26
Piper's book, "Seeing and Savoring Jesus Christ," is hands-down one of the best books I have ever read in devotional time. His work is saturated with Scripture, driving the reader deeper into the Word of God, and is written in such a way to leave one in awe of this Man Christ Jesus. This is a great book to take into your prayer time and lose yourself in the beauty of who Jesus is again and again...
Great Devotional!.......2005-10-28
John Piper has written an excellent book about the various aspects of Jesus'life. The book challenges us to really experience Jesus for who He was and to recognize the impact this has on our own lives. This book is an excellent book for believers and seekers alike.

Book Description
Barry Oshry explains why so many of our efforts to create more satisfying and productive human systems end in disappointment, lost opportunities, broken relationships, and failed partnerships. Oshry shows how these breakdowns are the predictable outcomes of an uninspected system life. This book provides us with a new set of lenses with which to view these systemic relationships and patterns, enabling us to recognize and stop destructive patterns of behavior.
Customer Reviews:
Useful frame for understanding our behavior in organizations.......2003-03-28
This book provides an elegant framework for understanding our behavior in human systems. It is accessible and powerful.
Wow! I feel as if I was blind and now I SEE........2003-03-28
I read this book about 6 years a go as a part of my graduate program on organizational learning. My reaction at that time was, "Wow! I feel as if I was blind and Now I See!." It was like I gained a secret lens through which the organizational behaviors were making more sense to me. I felt so enthralled with the book, I called the number on the back of the book to inquire how I could explore, experience and learn the Seeing Systems concepts further. I have not done that before or since. 6 years later, I still feel Barry Oshry's teachings are one of real gems in understanding organizations and their behavior mysteries. I have integrated these concepts into my own ways of thinking and being and use them to generate partnerships for impact. I most highly recommend this book to anyone who works with organizations including executives, organizational developers and change agents.
An exciting way of seing systems.......2003-03-27
A first rate professional book. It deals with complex issues in a clear, intelligent and original way. The book offers a lot of added value to both consultants and managers. I find myself leafing through it many times, never failing to find new insights. The book contains both a thorough theoretical analysis and practical tools and concrete tips for dealing with tough issues that impact organizations, such as power, accountability and the "positional trap" . The book is full of inpiring insights on the possibilities of making organizations more robust through empowering people. After reading the book, we cannot help it but seing systems in a new and refreshing way.
Human Systems are Keys to Partnership and collaboration.......2003-03-27
I first struggled with the concepts because I am a student of organizational systems via Deming and the like. But this is a completely different viewpoint that provides a fantastic complement to the work of Deming, Weisbord and others looking at Open-systems theory.
If you want to see the impact of Human Systems and the dynamics that influence an organizations ability to partner, collaborate, and move beyond the powerful vaccuum of the human behaviors that stall organizational growth, this will provide a whole new way to view the relationships of people, power, and personal leadership within open-systems.
Mr. Cummings is right about the simplicity of the book in his review, it IS cartoon like at places. But let's be reminded how icons have changed the computer world and have worked to connect with people who need to remember things clearly, simply, and practically. People are visual learners and this book takes advantage of that reality. It's not written to be an IQ test - but to be clear and concise in boiling down the intricate and delicate issues, and choices, of human interaction in organizations.
It focuses on helping the reader learn and apply. If that works for you - make it so.
WOW! What insight........2003-03-27
As an organization change and transformation practitioner, I am often confronted with the initial overwhelming complexity of a new client organization. Seeing Systems provided me with a set of tools that make my life easier and interventions more effective.
Simplistic? One might think so. But, you'd be wrong. I believe it to be a distillation of truths of organization theory. It's pure genius. The author understands organizations so well he is able to convey it to others in an understandable context. Oshry brings to life the consequences of being in different positions of power in the organization.
I have taken his model and use it to look at each of my clients. It gives significant insight to understand why the organization works; why it doesn't and what to do.
Read Seeing Systems atleast twice. After the first reading, go to work. What are the behaviors? How effective are the relationships? What are the outcomes? Now read Seeing Systems again. Go back into your organization. Observe the relationships. Apply the model. Predict the outcomes. You'll probably be right. Can't ask much more from a book.
By the way, after reading Seeing Systems, I participated in a one-day workshop Oshry presented to the Dallas-Fort Worth Organization Development Network. I wasn't disappointed. He is, that good.
Book Description
In this third edition of Photography and the Art of Seeing, Freeman Patterson reviews principles of composition and visual design and provides techniques and exercises for breaking away from traditional concepts. Aspiring photographers are made aware of the barriers to seeing and learn how to observe, imagine and express in a personal and creative way.
Customer Reviews:
Breaking the photographical routine.......2007-03-24
Freeman tries to get photographers to break out of their ways, to look at the world with different eyes, to question old habits. This is a good thing, in my opinion. But does he succeed?
I can only answer this from my own perspective: Yes, the book gives me impulses to try out different perspectives than the ones I'm used to.
The writing is fluent and to the point. The images underline the points in the text. I like many of them, even though they seem unspectacular at first. The printing quality could be better, though. I ordered the book together with two volumes by John Shaw ("Focus on Nature" and "The Field Book to Nature Photography", both Amphoto Books), and those are printed much better, with more contrast and color saturation.
Still, a recommended book for anyone who likes taking photos and would like to explore new grounds.
I deeply regret buying this book... RATED NO STARS AT ALL.......2007-02-16
I wrote a review as follows: 'Anyone can take a picture of a hot dog. If this photographer took a picture of a hot dog you would smell the french fries, hear the ocean, and taste the salt water taffy. The author offers the reader a chance to see the world through his eyes.
Then I looked through the book more closely. On page 137 I saw a picture that disgusted me. When I read what he wrote about the subject, I became angry. He wrote, "This photograph captures a moment in the life of a child, and suggests innocence. The little girl had withdrawn from her playmates on the beach; she wanted to be alone. She was crying a little. When I came along, she hid her face to preserve her privacy. I quickly made this picture and left. Note that the expanse of rocks and the girl's small space in the composition strengthen the sense of her privacy."
The picture is of a naked little child who was hiding her face crying and trying to turn away from the man taking her picture with his camera. It is only my opinion, but I think this man is greatly lacking in respect of human dignity.
I am sorry I put money in his pocket. I hope no one else will.
An excellent resource.......2006-12-15
If you have moved up from the technical aspects of photography, and are into "photography as an art", this is the book to buy to take you to that next level.
If there is just one book in the whole world that you can buy, this is it! I own all of patterson's instruction books - and they are all great! a worthy investment and proudly displayed in my bookshelf.
Don't buy this book - PLEASE!.......2006-11-30
Please don't buy this book. It will change your photography. I bought it, and now I have an advantage, and I want to keep it!
Seriously, this is probably the most disturbing photography book I have found. It will challenge everything you do in photography, and that is unsettling.
If you follow the exercises properly, you will develop a whole new way of seeing and taking photos.
Sure, if you want to, you can read it from cover to cover and go "Ho, hum, very nice." and take it no further. But if you want to improve your photography, take your time, and do the exercises carefully. You will be surprised at the results.
I especially like the one where you lock yourself in a small room (bathroom) and have to take 20 images. "If you don't feel desperation before you finish this exercise, then you have to take another 20 photos."

Stimulating Creativity.......2006-11-11
I found this book excellent for stimulating the creative process where photography is concerned.
Book Description
When a disruptive innovation is launched, it changes the entire industry and every firm operating within in
This book argues that it is possible to predict which companies will win and which will lose in a specific situation—and provides a practical framework for doing so.
Most books on innovation—including Christensen’s previous two books—approached innovation from the inside-out, showing firms how they can create innovations inside their own companies. This book is written from an “outside-in” perspective, showing how executives, investors, and analysts can assess the impact of a new innovation on the firms they have a vested interest in.

Michael Porter of Innovation.......2007-07-20
Just as Michael Porter is the authority on Strategy, Clayton Christensen has become the authority on Innovation. He has not only created a great business theory, he has created an institution that defines our modern understanding of disruptive innovation. The foundations of his business theory are unimpeachable and the illustrations of the theory across industries are appealing to professionals inside and outside the industry alike.
In this book, Christensen's students expand on the theory first proposed in The Innovator's Dilemma to create a framework that can predict whether an innovation might be disruptive (read. has potential to transform an entire industry or create a new one). The impact of understanding and applying this theory is large.
This book maintains the quality level I have come to expect of books published by HBS press, paralleled only by Harper Business. The illustrations in this book include the Telecommunications, Education, Aviation, Semiconductors and Health Care industries. The book dedicates a couple of chapters that are of international interest: Nonmarket Factors and Innovation Overseas. This whets the appetite but does not quench the thirst for more. In the US business environment where global influence is becoming more and more relevant for future growth, it would make sense for a next book in the series focusing entirely on the overseas perspective.
It is hard to pull off a quality job on part three of a sequel without rock-solid grounding. A keen student, I hope to see a lot more come out of Innosight and the institution of Innovation that is Clayton Christensen.
Seeing What's Next.......2007-05-03
This is certainly a worthwhile read. The concepts are a great mix of grounded theory and in depth information. There are no earth-shattering concepts, or get rich quick schemes, just sound strategy on how to analyze the industry leaders of the future. One concern that is not addressed is how to determine what will be a disruptive innovation and what will be a poor investment. He does encourage readers to look at nonconsumers, and create a product or service that this group would want to consume. However, I can't help but think that behind every failed innovation is a person who thought they had this dialed in. For example, Christensen cites VOIP as likely for cooption by incumbents, and suggests that one way for start ups to prevail is to offer VOIP as a second line. I am in the telecom industry, and do not see this as a viable option. Even he admits that second lines have been in decline for years, but more than that, those that do have second lines are often the most technologically resistant consumers. They are still using dial up or resisting cell phones. The consumers who are likely to use VOIP do not want to add on a second line, they want to replace their landline. This in an example of the idea for disruption still remaining mysterious. However, for those of us whose job it is to navigate the changing environment, not come up with the idea, this book is a must read.
One Book Too Many.......2007-03-12
Christensen's two earlier books ("The Innovator's Dilemma," and "The Innovator's Solution") provided great new insights into business history and strategic thinking. "Seeing What's Next" goes on to attempt to demonstrate implementation of these two books' insights, unfortunately with less than total success.
Early in "Seeing What's Next," Christensen uses Dell Computer to illustrate the "Value Chain Evolution" theory's golden rule: Integrate to improve what is "not good enough" (speed, customization, and convenience of PC ordering and acquisition), and outsource what is "more than good enough" (the PC computer's architectural design) - certainly a potentially helpful insight.
"Seeing What's Next" eventually moves on to examining several sectors and making predictions for the future. 1)Education: Christensen sees on-line services from the University of Phoenix (UOP) as an innovation that is likely to disrupt the higher-education market. However, even the UOP has had limited success with this innovation - the vast majority of its services are still provided via bricks-and-mortar classrooms. (Another major UOP problem is that increasing questions are aimed at its credibility - especially the strength of its instructors, and its very low graduation rate.) On the other hand, Christensen probably has it right in seeing community-colleges provide a much greater challenge to pupils currently "over-served" by higher-cost state universities. (This applies to businesses and the general public as well - the vast majority of "research" undertaken at major universities offers very little or no concrete value to society.)
Aviation is another sector examined. Here Christensen sees low-cost Southwest Airlines as in danger of being over-ridden by major airlines - certainly about as far from the ensuing reality as one could get. As for the semiconductor sector - Christensen sees overshot customers (eg. word-processor and spreadsheet users) as becoming vulnerable targets for less expensive/capable processors; again, however, this has been little sign of this. (Christensen's "problem" may be failing to recognize that users want only one operating system/CPU, and that combination should be able to handle most/all existing PC applications. Regardless, it is also noteworthy that Andy Grove, an enthusiastic endorser of Christensen's first two books, does not have an endorsement on this book's back cover.
Healthcare: Christensen observes a "do-it-yourself" trend with home pregnancy tests and glucose monitors. However, both are small components of a relatively trivial healthcare market not likely to sustain major innovation. His third example - cheaper/easier angioplasty replacing cardiac surgery, is an unfortunate one because the latest findings are that angioplasty is not generally an acceptable substitute. Finally, Christensen is totally correct in concluding that many patients are overserved by M.D. providers vs. eg. nurse practitioners - unfortunately, legal constraints are not likely to relax soon in this area. (This also limits "off-shore" provision of X-ray readings, etc., though combining tourism with cheaper Asian healthcare may grow into a much greater market.)
Finally, "Seeing What's Next" considers the wireless communication sector. VOIP is seen as a major challenge - not likely, in my opinion, due to users being physically tied to an on-line computer, and existing wireless providers already able to offer long-distance quite cheaply via national service plans and/or offerings of free calling on weekends and after 7 P.M. during weekdays.
Bottom Line: "Seeing What's Next's" greatest contribution is probably through demonstrating how difficult seeing into the future actually can be.
Inspired OnDisruption.......2006-08-27
My eyes were opened when I read Clayton Christensen's books on disruptive innovation.
In Seeing What's Next, Christensen chastises Wall Street analysts for their inability to see beyond current trends. -- I lived in that world for 10 years and he's right.
Extrapolating future scenarios from current trends is a dangerous business and it seldom works for investors. And it fails miserably as a method for businesses to find the next big thing, which a lot managers try to do. A new framework for analyzing identifying tech trends is needed and Christensen's theories on disruptive innovation are a great starting point, and an inspired way to think about innovation.
The book offers a framework for undertsanding and anticipating trends. This includes a recap of the theory of disruption and has a few chapters that serve as casebook examinations of industries facing disrption, including the telecom sector, higher education and aviation.
While not as strong a book as his earlier work, The Innovator's Solution or the first breakthrough on disruption, The Innovator's Dilemman, Seeing What's Next is a more practical guide for managers. The reason: Christensen, a Harvard professor, allows his theory to evolve from his management consulting activities.
Valuable analysis - but does it really help us see what's next?.......2006-02-09
This is the third book in a series on innovation, with Christensen as the lead author. The three books develop theories around the concepts of disruptive and sustaining innovation, and how to apply strategies based on these concepts and an understanding of the markets into which innovations are directed.
The first book, The Innovator's Dilemma, explains why established companies can often be successfully attacked by innovators introducing disruptive products, while The Innovator's Solution develops an approach to launching disruptions. Seeing What's Next changes focus somewhat to propose that the theories developed in the first two books can be used to analyse and predict industry change. In doing so, it also provides a useful summary of the theories put forward in the previous books and their application.
The analysis is undertaken essentially in the context of Porter's 'five forces' (competitors, potential entrants, buyers, substitutes and suppliers) but with the added dimensions of the nature of the innovation (disruptive or 'sustaining' - i.e. something that creates new markets or reshapes existing ones, or something that develops further on existing offerings) and the range of customers from 'overshot' (offered more than they really want) to 'undershot' (looking for more than they are offered) in terms of product characteristics.
It is a useful way of looking at markets - one that will keep analysts very occupied in collecting data and pondering alternative conclusions and strategies. The associated risk is that it appears to invite 'paralysis by analysis'.
While the coverage of the book extends to other industries, including airlines, education and the health industry, the methodology is built primarily around various elements of the telecommunications and computer industries. I suspect that choice of the fashion or food industries would have led to a different perspective on the same questions - one in which the ideas put forward by Gladwell in The Tipping Point might provide more useful clues to competitive challenges to established companies.
How reliable the authors' methodology is in actually predicting the future in a specific case is, of course, open to question, and it is not a question that the authors put to the test. Rather, they claim that the analytical process proposed will put both a potential attacker and a potential defendant into a better position to achieve their goals.
The three underlying theories round which the analysis in the book is built are
the disruptive innovation theory (briefly described above)
the resources, processes and values (RPV) theory, and
the value chain evolution theory (VCE).
The RPV theory argues that resources, processes and values define an incumbent's strengths, but also its weaknesses and blind spots - it is not easy to operate outside a well established arena.
The VCE theory argues that integration gives greater control over interdependent factors but reduces flexibility. The theory provides a tool for judging whether the right decisions about what should and should not be integrated have been made in particular circumstances.
Part 1 of the book elaborates on these theories and their application, while Part 2 essentially consists of extended case studies of five industries (education, aviation, semiconductors, health care, telecommunications) and an examination of innovation overseas. Of these industries, I am most familiar with health care and, while I found the analysis interesting, it did not seem to me to come to grips with the central dynamics of the challenge of health care into the future.
