5 out of 5 stars The Weather Fairies Series.......2007-07-12

I have a [...] granddaughter. She loves to be read to. Her attention spane for these books are outstanding. She loves these books and will sit and listen through the whole book and will want more, and she remembers what the book is all about. She especially loves the goblin and the adventures that Kristi and Rachel get to do. I thought the goblin would be scary to her, but no, she giggles when things happen to him.

5 out of 5 stars Got My Daughter Interested in Reading Again.......2007-05-07

We've been struggling for a way to get my daughter to read now that she's run out of Junie B. Jones books. The Weather Fairies books have done the trick. She seems to enjoy reading again for the first time in half a year or more.

I have to say I haven't read any of the Weather Fairies myself but I caught my twelve-year-old son reading the series because his sister had obviously liked it. He said he wanted to read more, too.

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Series.......2007-03-12

My daughter loves this series of books - the biggest problem we have is that she won't stop after one chapter. She's 5, so we're reading them to her now, but soon she'll be re-reading them herself. We started with book 1 of the Rainbow Fairies and are now on the Weather Fairies Series. I highly recommend them!

    Book Description

Explaining the symbology of dimensioning and tolerancing and introducing a step-by-step system for geometric definition, this book provides examples for the application of geometric controls. The author breaks down the language of geometric product definition into a series of steps that consist of significant questions to be asked at any point in the product definition. He addresses functional requirements and manufacturing techniques, measurement, inspection, and gaging procedures. The book illustrates how symbology is best utilized, in what order it should be applied, and how each geometric control anticipates, integrates, and complements all other geometric controls on a part and in an assembly.

    1 out of 5 stars disapointed.......2007-10-04

When I read the introduction of this book It was immediately clear it did not begin with the basics of GD&T. The books introduction assumes you are familiar with the fundamental principals of this system. This book may be great for someone already GD&T experienced wishing to improve their skills. For the inexperienced looking to learn from the ground up I would look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars A clear, comprehensive look at a difficult topic........2005-03-10

I am the author of this book. The book is now entering its twelfth printing and has sold tens of thousands of copies to universities, companies and individuals throughout the world. It not only contains all of the basics of dimensioning and tolerancing, but at 624 pages is long enough to show the reader how to apply the language of GD&T to single parts and assemblies. I constantly get emails and personal comments from readers telling me how much they love the book. One person in charge of GD&T at Daimler/Chrysler told me he couldn't imagine a better book on the topic. Another said his whole department relied on it for the answers to all their GD&T questions. I decided to write in because there were two "reviews" listed by Amazon customers. One reviewer liked the book and the other didn't. The one who didn't said he couldn't even understand the book's Foreword. Since all I wrote in the Foreword was that GD&T was a language of symbols and rules and then proceeded to thank the individuals who helped me construct the book, I had to wonder what could possibly have confused him. I just wanted the customers of Amazon to know this is a serious treatment of a difficult topic and one of the most comprehensive texts ever written about GD&T.

    1 out of 5 stars Unreadable.......2004-12-03

This book is poorly organized and written. Even the introduction requires the reader to understand material not yet introduced until later chapters. The author repeatedly alludes to subtleties and nuances which obscures clear meaning and hinders the learning process. The book is unreadable and I am returning it for credit.

    4 out of 5 stars Good Beginning.......2000-06-26

I am in the automotive field and needed a source reference. This book is excellent not too technical and not too simple. I would recommend it for anyone who needs an understanding of GD&T.

    Book Description

Three volume set with companion DVD!

Since Volume I of The Systems Thinking Playbook was published in 1995, it has become a favorite of K-12 teachers, university faculty, and corporate consultants. The book provides short gaming exercises that illustrate the subtleties of systems thinking. Volume II appeared in 1996, adding ten new games. Volume III was added with ten entirely new exercises contained in 165 pages, doubling the size of the book! In 2005, the authors added a companion DVD of videos illustrating good practice in introducing and running the 30 games.

The 30 games are classified by these areas of learning - Mental Models, Team Learning, Systems Thinking, Shared Vision and Personal Mastery. Each description clearly explains when, how, and why the game is useful. There are explicit instructions for debriefing each exercise as well as a list of all required materials. A summary matrix has been added at the back for a quick glance at all 30 games. When you are in a hurry to find just the right initiative for some part of your course, the matrix will help you find it.

Linda Booth Sweeney and Dennis Meadows both have many years of experience working with adults. This book reflects their insights. Every game works well and provokes a deep variety of new insights about paradigms, system boundaries, causal loop diagrams, reference modes, and leverage points. Each of the 30 exercises here was tested and refined many times until it became a reliable source of learning. Some of the games are adapted from classics of the outdoor education field. Others are completely new. But all of them complement readings and lectures to help participants understand intuitively the principles of systems thinking.

The book includes many quotations from practitioner, who share their insights about the relevance of specific exercises. There are also citations for related reading

3 out of 5 stars Trainers: Keep this one handy........2003-05-14

As corporate trainers and authors of books for trainers, we keep a lookout for quality and innovation in our field. The Systems Thinking Playbook is a handy three-ring binder filled with interactive lessons that breathe life into systems theory. These clear lesson plans make sometimes intimidating concepts accessible and can inspire course designers to strike off in their own creative directions. If any part of your job includes helping people function in groups or organizations, you should keep The Systems Thinking Playbook within easy reach. - Bill Withers and Keami D. Lewis

The Systems Thinking Playbook is one of the most pragmatic and effective books I have found that actually enables one to take theory into practice and make it fun! Learning is most effective when one embodies concepts and Linda Booth Sweeney and Dennis Meadows have done a wonderful job here. Play with it and learn!

4 out of 5 stars Great with multi-cultural groups, but more references needed.......1999-07-22

Here in South Africa we have no less than 11 official languages! Can you imagine how many mental models are at work in organisations?

As a teacher of Systems Thinking, especially Managerial Cybernetics, I have found the exercises very helpful in grounding the concepts and unlocking the rich variety of perspectives that make up the South African gestalt.

Everytime I facilitate an exercise I learn something new. Makes for a great learning partnership. However, there is a risk that groups have so much fun, they neglect the challenge to get more deeply into 'the thinking within systems thinking' i.e. epistemology and ontology, and may miss opportunities for even deeper awareness and consciousness.

Some more references to other Systems Thinkers and their writings might be useful as follow through and encouragement to embark on deeper learning cycles that lead to more rigourous understanding.

My daughter is 9 and has Asperger's syndrome, or high functioning autism. She collects feathers, and the weather is one of her IMPORTANT subjects. She reads fast, and finished this book quickly.... and informed me that she needs to read the rest of them so could I please help her get them right away? The story itself is a little intense because the goblin is actually trying to hit Storm and girls with lightning, but of course it all comes out okay in the end. We will definitely read the other books in the series!

My soon-to-be 5 year old daughter and I LOVE this series. The stories are simple enough and short enough (about 40 min) to hold her attention as a read aloud, and there are enough illustrations peppered throughout to give her something to look at as I read. Both the stories and the illustrations are delightful. These books have ignited a passion for reading in my daughter, and she is now extremely motivated to read on her own so she doesn't have to wait for me to read them to her. We can hardly wait for the rest of the series to be published in the US. There are also the Jewel Fairies, the Pet Fairies, and the Party Fun Fairies that are only available in the UK right now, but it looks like some of them will be published here this summer. You can be sure we will be pre-ordering them!

Kirsty and Rachel are best friends, who are friends with the fairies so they can help! Their first mission is in this book when they have to find Crystal the snow fairies weather feather. my (just turned) 6 year old niece loves these books- she's currently reading the rainbow magic "color" series, i bought her inky and preordered the next few. i have even created a wishlist just for all the books i'm going to order her in the near future. i'm a little confused about the different series, party fairies, weather fairies, jewel fairies etc... but she was VERY particular in telling me- she's reading THIS color series, she didn't express a very definate desire to read the other series. regardless of her interest i'm going to send her a few of each of the series. i'm a little afraid she's going to burn out of these books because there are so many of them. but then again i think i had a hundred baby sitters club books when i was a kid! but for those just as confused as i am----- i'm almost positive that if the kid is saying- "i want rainbow magic!" get them the color fairy's because they seem the most popular and well loved by my niece and all of her school mates. (she goes to an all girl school)

1 out of 5 stars From the eyes OF a Lakota.......2006-07-01

I will try and refrain from being too harsh here, however...I feel this needs to be said from someone who actually knows something about these things.(I am Oglala Lakota) First off, if you want to know the TRUTH about Lakota spirituality, don't buy a book from some European out to make a quick buck. This book, as well as his others are filled with pieces from this and that, speculation and cliche' and has little to nothing to do with the truth. (The Lakota people do not, nor ever have had "Shamans") This type of book not only serves to perpetuate the disintigration of our sacred ways, but it also dishes out lies, misconceptions, and other non-truths. I highly suggest that this, and books like it, not be supported so that those who are truly searching, won't have to be loaded down with junk, before they find the true treasure.

5 out of 5 stars Learn About Yourself.......2005-06-16

I was first introduced to this book almost seven years ago. I was immediately intrigued by what I read, and ever since, I have had a vast respect and interest in Native American philosophy and teachings.

There are certain tribes - particularly the Lakota tribes, as I understand it - that do not agree with the material published in this book. While I respect their differences, I have found this book to be an immeasurable tool in self-discovery.

Surprisingly, I have not had much interest in the other books published by this author. I read this book first, and was certain that I would enjoy reading more from him, but this seems to be the book that speaks to me the most.

Mr. Meadows is known for his "Shamanic" genre writing, though this is the first book of his I have read. I wanted to explore some of the history of earth based spirituality, and with that expectation found this book very disappointing. Mr. Meadows paints incredibly huge strokes, covering thousands of years of spiritual life, shoe horning it into the Medicine Wheel, and doing so in the space of 90 pages. He makes statements that begin like Aristotlian proof theorems, and spin into grandiose New Age spiritual idealisms. His descriptions of what "Amerindians" (now I am really getting ill) believed or didn't believe no doubt has Native Americans everywhere rolling on the floor or in their graves. Meadows tries to do way too much and is ill equiped to handle his subject matter, both academically and poetically.

I got this book as part of a free offer. Thank goodness I didn't spend any money to support this book. This book leads you on interesting exercises to ... nowhere! I felt like I was just exploring things to give me "warm fuzzies" rather than searching out any spiritual truth or real growth. Indeed, I felt like this book was harming my spiritual growth!

Really, I should have known better than to buy a book claiming to teach "native american beliefs" -- most, if not all, are on a bandwagon to take the money of good people who are simply searching for spirituality. If you are interested in nature-based religions, start by reading "Drawing Down the Moon" by M. Adler and learning about yourself via meditation or perhaps a journaling book such as "Life's Companion" by C. Baldwin. Seek a path closer to your own heritage. And if your heritage is Native American, or you are REALLY deadset on learning a Native American belief, then talk to a real Native American to understand the truth. Don't get your info from a "plastic shaman".

Please DON'T make the same embarrassing mistake I did! Be smarter than me! :)

This book has changed my life. It has made me appreciate the Earth more and my role in this world. It has helped me find myself again after a pretty messy divorce. It has helped to guide me in the way I want to raise my daughter as well.

A brief and probably pointless quiz: Who is the horse described in the following paragraph?

He was a physically awesome Thoroughbred and a superb broodmare sire. When he was born at ten minutes after midnight, March 30, 1970, his owner took one look at him and said, "There is a whopper." His own firstborn was an Appaloosa colt named 'First Secretary'. Another son - a draft horse cross - is still alive and well and recently retired from the Southwest dressage circuit. Yet a third son won the Belmont by a margin of 21 lengths, in what was the second fastest running and third largest margin in history.

Of course, his Daddy still holds the record for both margin and time.

And who is Risen Star's Daddy?

Secretariat, of course. No one who admires this special breed of horse could possibly have flunked this quiz.

When we watched Big Red hit the wire 31 lengths ahead of Twice a Prince in 1973, crushing the Belmont stakes record by two seconds and change, many of us knew that we would not see his like again. According to his jockey, Ron Turcotte, Secretariat was retired before he had reached his full potential at the longer distances. We would have loved to watch that big red horse run all day and smash every record there was, but it was not to be.

At any rate, reading William Nack's book is the next best thing to watching him run (unless you are lucky enough and rich enough to own one of his 'blue hen' daughters). At least his fans can relive the races Big Red did run, and Nack has the knack (sorry) of bringing them vividly back to memory. This book and "Wild Ride: The Rise and Tragic Fall of Calumet Farm, Inc., America's Premier Racing Dynasty" by Ann Hagedorn Auerbach are my two favorite reads on all aspects of the Thoroughbred racing industry in the United States. "Secretariat" reflects the brilliance of the Thoroughbred and its human interface. "Wild Ride" reflects the dark side of that same relationship.

My only complaint regarding Nack's treatment of Secretariat is that although it starts in the right place (the birth of Somethingroyal's whopping, chestnut foal), it didn't extend much beyond Big Red's last race. I would have liked to follow him through at least part of his career at stud.

However, that might be asking too much of a book that was published only two years after this great Thoroughbred retired from the track.

At the beginning of the new millennium, Man O'War was voted 'Thoroughbred of the Century' by a panel that was assembled by 'Blood Horse' Magazine. But those of us who saw Secretariat win the Belmont will remember him as first, and (as they said about one of his most famous ancestors) the rest nowhere.

    5 out of 5 stars Like a Tremendous Machine..........2003-06-05

As the Belmont Stakes approaches and another 3 y.o. has the chance to win the race and with it capture the Triple Crown, I thought it would be interesting to refresh my memory and read about Secretariat, the winner of the Belmont and the Triple Crown of 1973.

William Nack, who wrote BIG RED OF MEADOW STABLE in 1975, provides the reader with some of the most descriptive and awe-inspiring writing about horse racing and what it felt like to ride what many consider the best race horse who ever lived.

He tells the story of breeding Bold Ruler to Somethingroyal and a perchance coin-flip that gave ownership rights to Penny Tweedy who later syndicated Secretariat for over $6 million while he was still an actively racing 3 y.o. Nack tells the history of this super horse, describing the training methods of Lucien Lauren and his relationship with jockey Ron Turcotte, as well as the race-time strategy, anxiety, hopes and dreams as Secretariat grew from a green 2 y.o. colt to a strapping superstar.

As well written as this book is, what makes it special and distinguishes it from most others, is the descriptions of the races themselves. Nack takes the reader along for the ride in all of Secretariat's races leading up to and including the three races of the Triple Crown. His ability to put the reader in the irons, especially at the Belmont when Turcotte glances back during the stretch run to see the field an eventual 31 lengths behind and realizes he's aboard a horse running as the track announcer described "like a tremendous machine", is very powerful.

If you are interested in horse racing or just enjoy reading about the evolution of greatness, I think you will be satisfied with this highly recommended classic.

I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in the legend of Secretariat or to those who love thoroughbred racing. This is a truly marvelous account of Big Red - I could not put it down! Mr. Nack's passion for the subject is obvious throughout and the story is narrated in beautiful prose. The account of the Belmont is breathtaking and very emotional. I cannot say enough good things about this book.

5 out of 5 stars Big Red of Meadow Stable: Secretariat, the Making of a Champ.......2001-12-29

This book reads like a fairy tale. If you love horses, this is a must read. William Nack did an excellent job writing about this great racehorse. Unless you read this book, you can't really appreciate the accomplishments of this wonder horse. I read the chapter 3 times about the Belmont Stakes - and cried all 3 times when I read it! This book is moving, emotional, powerful, unforgettable, and it made me fall in love with Secretariat.

5 out of 5 stars history of secretariat.......1997-06-27

in the original edition the pictures are wonderful. it is a very moving book and anyone who loved secretariat-this book will bring you hours of enjoyment. the book starts before secretariat was born and finishes when he arrived at claiborne to go into stud. all of his races are discussed in detail with loads of pictures from his triple crown. I LOVED THIS BOOK!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Best Retriever Traning Book Ever Written.......2006-07-15

I found out about this book in 1991 shortly after I had gotten a Lab puppy that I wanted to train to be a working dog.

I had read all the popular books at the time, but none made it clear to me - what I needed to make clear to my dog !!

I met a man on Compuserve who raised and trained working retrievers in the Midwest. He highly recommended this book, but it was difficult to find, and in those days we did not have "AMAZON.COM".

Anyhow, I finally got the book and my dog Molly became the best working dog I have ever had the pleasure to hunt with. She was nothing short of amazing at spotting birds down, and she could easily blind retrieve the ones she did not see fall (almost always a double).

This book also taught me the concept and importance of teaching "force training" for retrieving, and it indeed works.

Molly is 15 yrs old now and is "retired", but if she was physically able she would hunt with me tomorrow.

So my strong advice here is get this book if you have a young dog that you want to be well trained and a pleasure to hunt with. Also, well trained dogs make MUCH better and happier pets!!

This book is absolutely fantastic. After reading numerous other training books and still having difficulty with my young dog I stumbled onto this book by accident. Spencer covers every aspect of training the puppy right through to advanced blinds and marks. His style of writing is very clear and his use of anecdotes helps to illustrate the real life ramifications of various techniques. Until I read this book I had great difficulty training consistent blind retrieves. Spencer's explanation of the correct use of conditioning flags has made it so much easier. I have read this book at least ten times and learn something new every time. I can't recommend it enough.

James B. Spencer's Training Retrievers For Marshes And Meadows will hold a specific appeal for hunters who use retriever dogs in their work. Beginners are taught how to gain rapport and train dogs, from basic obedience to training for the hunt - and receive instructions particular not only to retrieving in general, but to the breed.

5 out of 5 stars Best I've read on training retrievers.......1999-12-07

Before, during and continuing with the training of my current yellow Lab, I have read quite a few books on the subject. I wish I would have had this one sooner! Easy to read and great instruction all in one book.

5 out of 5 stars If you can only buy one retriever training book, buy this!.......1998-11-26

After 21 years training rare retrievers (The Curly Coated), I found this book to be the most helpful I've ever read. Spencer actually recognizes that there are differences not only in the retriever breeds but among individuals in those breeds. A very wonderful book full of practical, down-to-earth training methods written by an author who recognizes dog training is an art, not a science. Will someday be on the dog training classics shelf along with James Lamb Free and others.

My youngest daughter enjoyed this book and the rest in this series. This is a colorful book with an uncomplicated and engaging story and simple illustrations to capture the eye of little girls. It is for the very young and not challenging. The Rainbow series will interest most young girls and help with their reading skills. However if you are seeking books with more complex storylines and challenging text try Fairy Realm or Fairy Chronicles. Also recommended - the Weather Fairies series by this same author.
