Book Description
Trash, Allison's landmark collection, laid the groundwork for her critically acclaimed Bastard Out of Carolina, the National Book Award finalist that was hailed by The New York Times Book Review as "simply stunning...a wonderful work of fiction by a major talent." In addition to Allison's classic stories, this new edition of Trash features "Stubborn Girls and Mean Stories," an introduction in which Allison discusses the writing of Trash and "Compassion," a never-before-published short story.
First published in 1988, the award-winning Trash showcases Allison at her most fearlessly honest and startlingly vivid. The limitless scope of human emotion and experience are depicted in stories that give aching and eloquent voice to the terrible wounds we inflict on those closest to us. These are tales of loss and redemption; of shame and forgiveness; of love and abuse and the healing power of storytelling.
A book that resonates with uncompromising candor and incandescence, Trash is sure to captivate Allison's legion of readers and win her a devoted new following.

unstoppable.......2007-09-14
In the shadows of society lie the ugly truth of what many must overcome just to survive. Set in, then rural South, this book moves you through the landscape of poverty, sadness, and grave dysfunction. When education is absent and substance abuse prevalent, unthinkable tragedy can occur. But the will of a girl to survive in spite of her lack of resources is heartbreaking, but the encouragement of at least one person in her life helps her overcome adversity. Written with detail to the usually inviisible details of life, Trash draws you in & holds you until the end. Even then the book haunted me with sadness for what some children have faced. While it is a novel, it closely aligns with real life events.
Winner of two Lambda Literary Awards.......2006-10-24
Powerful and not to be missed. This is a collection of autobiographical narratives, essays, and performance pieces that you will never (and should never) forget.
The author Tee A. Corinne in her book `Lovers: love and sex stories' says "Dorothy Allison crafts from her own life powerful erotic passages that defy circumspect parameters..."
This was the most intense reading I have done in a long time. This should be recommended reading in all colleges and universities.
Not to be missed other titles from the author are - Bastard Out of Carolina, Skin, and The Women Who Hate Me. More information can be found at he author's web page.
If you need to feel a whole lot better about how the author triumphed over her horrendous childhood she and her family of choice are profiled in the book - Love Makes a Family: Portraits of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Parents and Their Families by Peggy Gillespie, Kath Weston, Gigi Kaeser, and April Martin (Paperback - May 1999).
The final story..........2005-08-20
I really loved this book - it grabbed me from the beginning to end. Its so much more than "lesbian fiction". The last story where her mother dies, had me cold. It really made me feel so depressed and sad that I had to call home just to hear a voice I knew. That part...its harrowing.
Highly dissapointed.......2004-07-25
I purchased this book with the intention of reading gritty tales of growing up in the South, not lesbian porn. I do not have a problem with Ms. Allison's sexual preference; some of what she had to say about being a lesbian was interesting. However, I found this book to be pornographic and disgusting. I did not realize that 80% of this book was detailed sexual encounters. For example, one story describes her partner urinating on her face. I do not recommend this book.
i am fat from the honey of her prose.......2001-11-29
This book is hot. There is heat, and there is fire. I agree with others...the later stories do not compel as the early. Even in "River of Names," the scenes between the persona and the lover make me cringe--it seems like too much of a Device. Without those parts, "River of Names" is layered and astonishing. Sure, shocking, too, if your childhood is not full of dead cousins, but I am using "astonishing" to describe the grace of Allison's prose. She picks you up and drops you into each episode...lets you fall through it like you're in it. Only to catch (you, caught, are breathless) and drop again. "Gospel Song" is the real heat. So hot you oughta know it'll end with real flames.

The strongest, sexiest, and sassiest debut contemporary romance weᵥ seen since Rachel Gibson! The quality of Dixie's writing combined with the pure romance of the story guarantees that Avon Romance has just acquired a new star.
Debbie Sue Overstreet is still the best–looking gal in Saltlick, TX–and her ex–husband Buddy is still the best–looking sheriff. Thanks to a thriving gossip mill (also known as Debbie's hair salon), there isn't a thing in Saltlick that she doesn't know about before anyone else. That is, until somebody offs snooty Pearl Ann Carruthers. With Buddy on the case, the woman who has to know everything is stumped by not just one, but two questions: first, who killed Pearl Ann and why, and second, how on earth did she ever let Buddy Overstreet get away? Lucky for Saltlick and Buddy both, she means to find out the answers, no matter what it takes!

Since You're Leaving, You Might As Well Take Out the Trash.......2007-01-11
Since I have lived in West Texas all of my life, I could probably relate to this book better than most. You could tell it was written by Texans, and I thought it was a hoot. Some parts of it were laugh-out-loud hilarious! Good easy read!
A Southern Belle.......2006-03-20
The characters were a hoot, and quite memorable. The story line did get a little redundant and dragged some, but all in all the book was really good. I look forward to the authors' additional books.
Cute mystery!.......2005-10-18
This was a very cute book about a VERY Texan woman and her love for a man that she thinks doesn't want anything to do with her.
However she is quite wrong and in between figuring out what is right and wrong for her and solving a mystery they figure out that they really do love each other still. It had lots of friendship and a bit about horses but not enough to put you off. If you are from Texas you will probably side with this book.
I love a cowboy as well so my imagination ran wide with this book! Good book to read at the beach or on a relaxing day!
Entertaining Read.......2005-03-10
Funny, funny book. I'm not from Texas, but I recognized some of my relatives and friends in the characters.
Recommended reading.
Since It's Over... Give Me Another One!.......2004-11-11
One of the best books I have read in a long time!!! It was like I was sitting beside Debbie Sue (getting my hair done...lol) through everything!! I cried and laughed with her through-out this novel. Considering the title of the book and storyline, I'd have to say this would be considered an all-in-one novel. Humor, romance, and mystery... such a great combination! From the moment the title jumped out at me with a chuckle, I knew I would love this book! I just didn't realize how much! I read this book within 4 days. Debbie Sue, Ed, and Janine (lol) are my kind of gals! Can't wait for the next one.

Book Description
One cold Moscow night, Comrade Tulayev, a high government official, is shot dead on the street, and the search for the killer begins. In this panoramic vision of the Soviet Great Terror, the investigation leads all over the world, netting a whole series of suspects whose only connection is their innocence—at least of the crime of which they stand accused. But The Case of Comrade Tulayev, unquestionably the finest work of fiction ever written about the Stalinist purges, is not just a story of a totalitarian state. Marked by the deep humanity and generous spirit of its author, the legendary anarchist and exile Victor Serge, it is also a classic twentieth-century tale of risk, adventure, and unexpected nobility to set beside Ernest Hemingway's For Whom the Bell Tolls and André Malraux's Man's Fate.
Customer Reviews:
A Russian classic you probalby haven't read.......2007-09-03
A voracious reader I thought I finished the Russian classics when I completed Cancer Ward and the First Circle having devoured Crime and Punishment and War and Peace years before. Not so . Victor Serge has it all :the prose of Tolstoy, the impending doom of Dosteyesky and the currency of the Stalin era. Don't miss this one. FPB Ann Arbor
Brilliant Appalling Account.......2007-06-01
A repressive shadow looms over the destiny of these men of all age, beliefs, and ranks ... insidious terror creeps into those innocent minds and their lives ends before they know it or before their hearts stopped beating. Some vainly fight back, some don't, but all are hopeless.
The implacable and revengeful wave of the Soviet rotten bureaucracy destroys the life of innocent men. When tyranny and deception shutters the greatest hope of and for humanity, one ought to question if it had to be that way.
Not to be missed-truly one of a kind........2006-10-13
This book is amazing for its ability to communicate the intimate thoughts of the characters and employ beautiful prose to describe the physical settings in which the action takes place, without abandoning the larger narrative. I loved it and would recommend it to anyone with an interest in Soviet history or literature. I read it after reading several other books on the period, and felt that they were an excellent preparation for this one (The Unquiet Ghost - Hochschild, Stalin: The Court of the Red Tsar - Montefiore, The Gulage Archipeligo), but even without the background this is a fantastic read.
A Chilling, But Important Classic.......2006-09-14
Most of the other reviews of this book are right on the money and more articulate than I could be, so I won't try to repeat them. But I will say that I found this book to be a compelling piece of work; a classic. I never quite appreciated the depth of dysfunction, even depravity, of the Soviet system. It bewilders me that such an abomination took place in my lifetime. It frightens me that it could happen again. I just finished reading about the Spanish Inquisition, where the same terrible mechanics were perpetrated on the Spanish. Whether the motivating spark is political ideology or religious orthodoxy, demented societies like this can spring up like mushrooms. Communism was a massive crime upon the Russian people. And it provides little satisfaction that the criminals were often the victims of their own crimes. A devastating but outstanding book!
"In time flesh will wear out chains .......2006-08-31
in time the mind will make chains snap." Victor Serge.
Victor Serge's novel "The Case of Comrade Tulayev" is set in the Soviet Union in the late 1930s, long before "the chains wore out." It is a classic and haunting look at Soviet society during an era of party purges, show trials, and executions that deserves a place of honor on any reading list that also includes Arthur Koestler's "Darkness at Noon", George Orwell's "1984" and Vasily Grossman's "Forever Flowing" .
Serge, born in Brussels in 1890 to Russian emigre parents, returned to Russia early in 1919 in order to support the newly created Soviet Union. He served as both a writer and journalist. However, Serge was one of the first of the old-line revolutionaries to oppose Stalin's concentration of power. He was arrested, expelled from the party, released, and arrested again. Finally, in 1936 after a public campaign by leading European political and literary figures, Serge was released and deported to France. He eventually found his way to Mexico where he died, penniless, in 1947.
The Case of Comrade Tulayev mirrors in some respects the murder of Sergei Kirov that set off Stalin's first great purge beginning in 1934. The story begins with the almost accidental murder of a leading member of the Central Committee, Comrade Tulayev by a disaffected clerk. The Chief (Serge's allusion to Stalin) immediately commences a round of purges, investigations, show trials and executions. The rest of the book takes us on a chapter-by-chapter account of a group of individuals caught up in the aftermath of the murder. Each individual represents a different component of Soviet society, from the lowly clerk to the high-ranking party functionary to the `oppositionist' already living in exile in Siberia.
Serge paints an intimate, vivid picture of each individual as they meet their fate. Like a storm at seas these people can see the storm on the horizon but they all seem powerless to either flea. They are swept up and prepared for show trials. The only option available to each is their ability to fight the omnipotent forces that want them to admit to crimes they did not commit and to implicate others in these same acts. The power of Serge's writing lies in his examination of the inner lives of his protagonists and their reasons for either accepting this fate or fighting to retain some shred of inner dignity. The outcome of each protagonist's story provides a cross section of human responses ranging from cringing supplication to death-defying resistance. The story of Ryzshik, the exiled oppositionist is particularly haunting. As with the others, he knows what is expected of him but he chooses to starve himself to death rather than confess to some non-existent crime.
The Case of Comrade Tulayev is most often compared to Koestler's Darkness at Noon. Although the comparison is very apt there are some critical differences in approach that bear mentioning. Darkness at Noon focuses on the self-reflection of one key player in the creation of the Soviet state, Rubashov. Koestler took one life, Rubashov's, and reflected on his own role (or guilt) in creating the state that was about to murder him. The emotional heart of Darkness at Noon (for me) is whether and why Rubashov would perform one last act for `The State". Serge, takes a broader look at the questions of individual guilt and collective responsibility. I think that by taking this broader look both Serge and the reader begin to think about, if not find a rational explanation for, how a society based on egalitarian ideals can allow itself to be transformed into a compliant, totalitarian state in less than a generation.
Victor Serge's Case of Comrade Tulayev is an excellent piece of writing. Highly recommended. L. Fleisig

Customer Reviews:
A complete surprise.......2007-06-13
I wasn't sure what to expect after I ordered this book, but I was completely surprised. It's a long "short" story but packs a lot into its pages. The story is told from Benny's perspective and follows his love of Terra, the trashiest girl in town. From childhood to adulthood, Benny loves her, even when she's cruel. Ellis develops the story nicely and the book has a nice Southern tone to it. He also works in the idea of love as redemption.
Now, about the ending, I gasped out loud and almost threw the book down--but then I read the last few pages and was completely satisfied. Excellent book.
Truly Wonderful!!.......2006-10-07
This was an exciting story-- one that got my heart to pounding and my face to smiling. The hardship of the white ghetto is tough enough to live with-- to fall in love in that environment is just plain difficult. This was an emotional ride with a wonderful unexpected ending. Terra is the meanest girl I've ever encountered in literature. But even a mean girl can fall-- under the right circumstance. I'm looking forward to reading his next book.
A Wild and Fun Ride!.......2006-04-10
Rhett Ellis knows how to pen a wild yet fun ride. I had a hard time putting this down for even a few seconds. I couldn't get enough of Terra Peoples and Benny Carpenter, and this would make such an excellent movie.
If you've ever driven by one of those rundown trailer parks and wondered about what kind of stories are in the making, then you are going to love this book. What do they want out of life? Do they hurt just like you and me? And is their pride any different than anyone's pride?
It is a love story, a sad story, and a story with a shocking twist that leaves ya with your mouth ajar.
If you love reading stories that have been penned by a natural writer, you will love this book.
See ya next review.
I wonder............2006-03-21
Some great novels are concerned with the heights to which the human spirit can soar. Some great novels plumb the depths of our awfulness. Something in a well-written story takes us on a journey inside ourselves and leaves us wondering... Would I do that? Could I? Why...? What if...? This story provokes those sorts of musings.
What happens in the life of a little girl to break her soul? When the world turns its back on her, why does one man turn toward her? Can the Devil be redeemed? Just what can perfect Love accomplish? Why would anyone WANT to love unconditionally, or to be loved that way?
Well, when I run the world, I'll change a few things about this novel, no doubt. The primary thing I'll have Mr. Ellis change, though, will be the length of the story. It leaves too many unanswered questions for my taste, and doesn't develop the main characters as fully as I'd prefer. (I suppose there are worse things for a writer to do than to leave readers wanting more...) On the other hand, the setting is interesting and unusual for a novel, and the characters are solidly consistent throughout the story in their wildly different approaches to life. And, perhaps most importantly and pleasantly of all, the story makes me wonder...
I look forward to Mr. Ellis' future works.

Book Description
F. Collyer Reed introduces a rich cast of characters to explore how dysfunctional strangers, driven by opportunity or need, engage in all types of sexual relationships. Murder, drugs, sex, violence, and betrayal--it's all here in this era of political correctness where trash is king.
Trash (A Collection of Short Stories) is adult fiction about sexual need without the window dressing of decency. Reed's rough-and-tumble characters live life as it comes--without whining, flinching, or regret. Sex is nothing more than raw, white-knuckled satisfaction, and love is a foreign emotion.
In Onica, a man's obsession with an older woman turns explosive when she extracts revenge after hitting the glass ceiling. Lester in Love is about a man hitchhiking to nowhere, "walking meat with a name," whose first experience with love might be his last. In Dreamland, Jake's sense of "party" ruins the lives of those he comes into contact with. In Ilsa, unusual sex for breakfast isn't on everyone's menu; neither is it the main course in House of Moltsa. But sex is the end of the world for Rain of Death and the Twins. Sex is the ultimate irony in Raucous Behavior and Smoking Finish but par for the course in Tractor Foot.
Collection Edited by Marilyn Pesola
Customer Reviews:
Writing is somewhat uneven, but the characters sing.......2004-09-23
Favorite story? About the lady bank robber. Or "Raucous Behavior". Or... I could go on. Some stories are better than others, but all are honest, raw and standouts in their genre.
Reed has a "way with words", to use a tired phrase. What's not tired is this collection - it's fresh, irreverent and a fun read.
Buy it!
Edges and Slippery Slpes.......2004-08-30
As I read Mr. Reed's collection, I saw how he kept hooking me to go willingly toward the next jolting surprise in the lives of my rough and raw fellow humans...I really cared what happened on the next page! Sometimes events gave me a slap in the face and I vowed not to go to the next story...but I also couldn't resist. It reminded me of the shocks I had with "The Painted Bird" so many decades ago...not to mention Abugrade prison in real world 2003. These are lives certainly below (or above? or beside?) my normal horizon. I considered the graded slope that I was on...I am just on the edge enough to read it...Mr. Reed's twisted enough to write it vividly and make me care...but this book makes it undeniable that there are those out there living these sometimes violent, often cruel, but strangely fascinating edges. Take a dive into the extremes of human choices. Can't wait for his next collection!
A Guilty Pleasure.......2004-08-12
I have not, since engaging in an Irving Welsh/De Sade flu induced reading marathon, happened upon the kind of guilty pleasures F. Collyer Reed presents to us in his short story collection 'TRASH'
He has delivered to us a poisonous cast of characters, involved in grotesque relationships, played out within the confines of scenarios so disturbing it caused me to salivate.
Bravo!
I enjoyed these stories immensely, may many more follow.
Thankyou Mr. Reed,
Sincerely,
Mrs. Jed Keehan
Good stuff........2004-07-23
Straight up language. Great characters. Gritty detail. I like the sex, the fat people, the dirt, the dialogue. Everything!

Great title for all ages........1998-06-24
Here come Kim and her pal Pete this book is a reading treat. I have read this book to my children countless times. They know it verse by verse, we love looking at all the famous people on the last page throwing out their trash, including the author and Corkscrew from Skate Board Monsters. I even entertained college students with this hip hop adventure.

As much as I disliked this book at first, I must admit that my 2 year old son absolutely loves it! For the reader, it is a bit difficult at first- but after the first "read it again, Mommy" I think that anyone will find this to be a great one for the kids (and you may just find yourself enjoying it, too!)
