Book Description
This groundbreaking book unleashes a brilliant new plan for permanently curing heartburn by relieving the root cause of the problem: low stomach acid.
Customer Reviews:
try it!.......2007-08-28
Ive been on hard core acid suppressent drugs for years and had huge problems every time i tried to go off them. Within a week i would have to start taking them again. Anyway i started reading this book and immediately stopped taking the nexium and started using superzymes. I dont quite understand how this works exactly but it does. Im just so relieved to not have to rely on those drugs anymore! Give it a go!
I must be the only one..........2007-08-26
whose heartburn was made worse by taking more acid. I suspect that much heartburn is caused by stress, which produces TOO MUCH stomach acid. It's always suspicious when EVERY review is 5 stars.
Excellent read.......2007-05-21
This book was recommended by my Internist as a must read. He was so right as this book was all about my problems and answered all my questions. The research was a plus as I always check my facts. I in the future I too will recommend this book.
Revolutionary book!.......2007-02-19
As a medical student, I've found this book to be spectacularly insightful and important. The book is simple, yet profound in it's explanations. The conclusions are logical and strongly substantiated.
Very important book.
Proves doctors are pill pushers.......2006-12-21
Highly rated by my clinical nutritionist. If a person has taken acid blockers for an extended period of time it's a must read. The downside is the authors try to overemphasize a point and the book gets a little boring.
Customer Reviews:
No More Heartburn.......2007-09-14
Excellent book !! Has made a significant change in our lives.
Arrived with no delay and in excellent condition
Thank you.
Candida NOT the only thing discussed here!.......2007-08-01
I'm not sure people who commented on Candida read the entire book. Or, perhaps it's the only aspect that caught their attention. This does NOT only deal with candida!
The reason this book is as great as it is: Dr. Rogers never gives one theory or one fix for any one problem. She acknowledges every body is different. This is really important as simplistic as this sounds. Most books/doctors usually have only one quick fix for everyone. Regular drug therapy, whether prescribed or over-the-counter uses exactly that theory.
For those of us with more complex problems other than gastric (especially MCS) this may be the key for regaining our health. The other great thing about this book is if you don't have insurance or don't have access to a doctor who can help she gives alternative measures to guide you to the answers for good health. I HIGHLY recommend this book!
Misleading title -- a book with another agenda.......2007-06-13
This book really isn't about heartburn -- it's about the faddish theory of candida (yeast) overgrowth being the cause of many gastrointestinal problems. Although, this may be true -- and yet most researchers and doctors are skeptical (including Dr. Weill -- see his site) -- you'd never know it from this book's title. Rogers believes in only one cause for heartburn and GERD (and everything else) -- candida.
As someone else pointed out, the book is also excessively alarmist when it comes to the risks of esophagal cancer to those suffering from GERD.
That said, there is some interesting information here (all of it couched in a very particular, kind of political way), and the diet seems harmless enough, so I've actually been following it. People who've left reviews here seem to be hqaving some success, though I remain deeply skeptical. The candida craze seems wishful thinking -- one cure for nearly everything that ails you.
I wish the book's cover had been a bit more honest.
Healing Gastrointestinal Disorders.......2007-05-13
I found the book to be an excellent source of information in helping me get my son off of Nexium, healing the erosion in his esophagus, and controlling his acid reflux. It has a lot of information on other gastric disorders as well. She also points out that making life style changes in your diet can keep you healthy (which is what I did for my son)can keep you off of medications that have other ill effects. She also recommends the book "Eat Right for Your Blood Type" so you know what you should eat to stay healthy. If you have a gastrointestinal disorder this is the book to purchase; since it's self help, educational, etc. I had purchased other books but this is the best one and most helpful.
It's absolutely AMAZING!!!.......2007-04-21
I was in a local bookstore looking for different recipe's that I could try to keep my chronic reflux to a minimum. As bad as my GERD is I could not accept being on a pill for the rest of my natural life. I hated that idea and wanted desperately to at least start eating things that would affect me the least. I turned the corner and literally ran into this book, knocking it off of the shelf...I picked it up and without even giving it a test run through I bought it. I've been a sufferer for more than 10 years and have had great trouble with taking a pill for my condition for the rest of my life...tagamet, to prilosec, to protonix, to prevacid...I was at the point that I was affraid that my body would be immune to everything eventually...Then my doctor advised me to take the prilosec twice a day instead of once....Seriously??? I'm not even 30 and all I could think of is that I am going to be on continuous drug treatment forever. I am so happy to say that since reading this book one week ago...I have been completely off of my daily medications, eating healthier, and I feel sooooo much better it's just amazing to me. My body is actually finally starting to heal!!! I recommend everyone read this book...even if you don't suffer from heartburn or other related illnesses...this is an eye opener about everything that is in the food market today!

Customer Reviews:
Excellent resource, but questions remain.......2007-07-12
I thought the angels had answered my prayers when I saw this book at my local pharmacy. It is packed absolutely chock full with great, easy to understand information about digestion, the mind-gut connection, and various digestive diseases. I know "natural medicine" seems crunchy granola and therefore easy to dismiss, but logic (and many well-designed studies) make many of the recommendations in this book hard to refute, and definitely worth trying. As someone who has been to dozens of traditional doctors and has still not found relief for my gut, being given more information and options for treating these distressing problems is a godsend and not to be sneezed at. However, after reading it cover-to-cover, I still have questions.
My main issue: I have symptoms of several of the problems talked about in the book, and unfortunately the treatments for these problems are often contradictory. I really should eat more yogurt and other cultured products for the beneficial flora--unless I have candidiasis or a food allergy. I should eat whole grains for the fiber--unless I'm allergic or have candidiasis. I should drink water right before I go to bed--unless I have reflux. The list goes on and on. I have NO IDEA which of my stomach problems I should tackle first and which things I can try for one problem that won't significantly worsen another problem. I find I'm so confused that I really want to visit the clinic that Ms. Berkson talks about working at, but she gives no contact info in the book and I was unable to find anything online. Barring that, I would have really appreciated some information for how to FIND a clinic like that one, or a doctor who will work with me to find holistic and natural remedies.
Having said that, I still think this book is an excellent resource that is well-written, well-organized, and well worth reading.
Excellent health information.......2007-06-27
One of the most helpful, informative books I have read. The suggestions really work. Highly recommend as an aid in healing.
Another great book with instant, digital availability!.......2007-06-26
I appreciated all the other reviews on this book before buying; and I find, too, that it FULLY deserves the five stars from the other readers! I also like that it's instantly available in digital format while we wait for the hard copy to arrive--what a great deal from Amazon and publisher, and with digestive problems, the sooner we get them remedied, the sooner our family member feels better and can get on with life!
Excellent book if you have IBS or GERD or other Digestive Problems ..........2006-12-27
This book is very thorough. It covers in depth the right foods, the wrong foods, what certain foods, supplements, and drugs do to digestive tract. It covers some history of digestive diseases, food alergies, home treatment, etc. The author makes no promises that this information will solve your particular digestive problem, however, she present the information honestly.
I recommend this book highly!
Covers all symptoms.......2006-12-10
The author seems very knowledgeble on all aspects of digestive problems. Learned a lot. Throws so much at you that it is hard to assimilate it all. Worth reading.

Eating for acid reflux: A Handbook and cookbook for those with hearthburn.......2007-01-17
Very helpful in understanding what acid reflux is and what I was able to eat
GERD sufferers unite!.......2006-11-05
This book has good information and decent menu ideas. Not too much that I didn't already know.
Recommended to GERD sufferers.
Eating for Acid Reflux.......2006-06-26
Good information on acid reflux. Many of the recipes had ingredients that people with acid reflux can't use....like tomato paste with (as tolerated) in the recipe. I found only six recipes for my family.
Excellent!.......2005-10-09
I love this book, it gives you everything you need to know about GERD, and the food in the cookbook is delicious!! I reccomend this book to all GERD suffers out there!!
Disappointing recipe section.......2004-04-20
Excellent background information on the disease. One of the most complete descriptions and reasons why certain foods cause problems. However, I was very disappointed with the recipe section. I was expecting recipes for dishes that did not include foods that can cause heartburn. Instead, there were very common recipes, many containing several ingredients that GERD suffers should avoid, with instructions such as "if you have problems with onions, leave it out..." How helpful is that, really!?

Customer Reviews:
Another useful one in this clever series ..........2006-07-10
It's true: it explains what many MDs neglect to mention in the office. Very useful reading -- BEFORE you go in to talk to the doctor. This will give you a framework for the best questions to ask. Unfortunately, the burden is on you, the patient, to ask them! Most docs volunteer nothing! Counterintuitive, I know, but it's the reality. Arm yourself with this simple, smart, easy to understand book.
Heartburn & Reflux for Dummies.......2006-06-26
I learned more about acid reflux in two days of easy reading then I learned from my doctors in five years. Great Book!
Gor pain? Get this........2005-06-18
Until now, no one had outlined the consequences of untreated heartburn as clearly as this author who pretty much tells you everything you need to know about about how heartburn happens and how it affects your body. I particularly liked how this book made it possble for me to contact a consumer help book and find out how stress hurts my stomach.
Dealing with heartburn.......2005-06-15
This book is a straightforward guide to heartburn and its unpleasant sister, reflux. The list of potentially offending foods is very useful, as is the Part of Tens guide to heartburn web sites. Even if I still get heartburn, this book has given me some strategies for reducing the discomfort. Highly recommended.
Book Description
Is it possible to write a sidesplitting novel about the breakup of the perfect marriage? If the writer is Nora Ephron, the answer is a resounding yes. For in this inspired confection of adultery, revenge, group therapy, and pot roast, the creator of Sleepless in Seattle reminds us that comedy depends on anguish as surely as a proper gravy depends on flour and butter.
Seven months into her pregnancy, Rachel Samstat discovers that her husband, Mark, is in love with another woman. The fact that the other woman has "a neck as long as an arm and a nose as long as a thumb and you should see her legs" is no consolation. Food sometimes is, though, since Rachel writes cookbooks for a living. And in between trying to win Mark back and loudly wiching him dead, Ephron's irrepressible heroine offers some of her favorite recipes. Heartburn is a sinfully delicious novel, as soul-satisfying as mashed potatoes and as airy as a perfect soufflé.
Customer Reviews:
Painful and Funny.......2007-07-05
This book is painful and funny in equal parts and brings the breakup of a marriage to it's best conclusion. I enjoy most of Nora Ephron's writing. I also enjoyed the DVD of this book starring Meryl Streep and Jack Nicholson. Also has a great song by Carly Simon.
A Perfect Revenge.......2007-03-22
Good for Nora! Makes a lot of divorced wives wish they could write like she does about a marriage gone sour. I'll bet her former husband and Hero of Watergate really squirmed and suffered.
Wonderful........2007-03-11
How can something be so funny and so sad at the same time? This book had me laughing out loud, but also on the verge of tears, as it really is heartbreaking to read all of Rachel's honest and straightforward thoughts. It's a wonderfully funny book, very well-written and satisfying. I will try some of the recipes.
Heartburn.......2007-01-04
I have read this several times over the years. Funny funny book and very good recipes.
Heartwarming.......2005-09-04
I don't know about you, but sometimes I stumble upon a book that is a salve to my soul; I am not happy about one thing or another, and I need someone to talk to, talk at, or listen to--I need to look into someone else's life so that I can feel human again and not totally strange and alone.
Nora Ephron's HEARTBURN did that for me, and for that I will put it on my bookshelf, along with the many books that have served the same purpose.
On my second reading I could not remember if the story was based on the author's life. I was afraid that I might not enjoy it if it was pure fiction. I was wrong. The book is a very, very funny satire of the Washington scene, whch has not changed. It is also a tale of real angst and heartbreak.
What is basically a sad story has delicious veins of humor, wistfulness, sadness, prosaic pragmatism, and real recipes marbling through it, all of which magically meld into a satisfying whole: but that is what a work of art can do.

Customer Reviews:
Supplemental magnesium helped cure me; please see below.......2005-07-18
For decades I suffered from severe bouts of acid reflux and heartburn several times each week. A few years ago I began taking a daily supplement of 1,000 mg of chelated magnesium for another seemingly-unrelated ailment. To my pleasant surprise the supplemental magnesium not only cured the ailment for which I was taking it, it also completely stopped my episodes of acid reflux and heartburn. I have since learned that acid reflux is caused by stomach spasms which cause acid (which healthy stomachs are designed by nature to tolerate and utilize) to be ejected into the esophagus which is not designed to be exposed to stomach acid and burns when it is so exposed. Magnesium is a natural relaxant -- as well as a natural antacid -- and, therefore, it helps prevent the stomach spasms which are the root cause of acid reflux and accompanying heartburn. I am a research chemist, not a physician, so I cannot tell you to take chelated magnesium as I did. I can, however, report to you the beneficial effects which I experienced from daily supplementation with chelated magnesium. Those interested in learning of the many other benefits of magnesium -- including prevention and mitigation of heart arrhythmia, high blood pressure, asthma, osteoporosis, and diabetes -- should acquire and read Dr. Carolyn Dean's excellent book The Miracle of Magnesium.
Save your money & keyword heartburn on the web.......2003-09-16
This isn't a bad book, but you can get all the same information going on line and keywording GERD or heartburn. I am sceptical of the many anecdotal patients in the book, used entirely to support her topic of the moment. I felt spoken down to in the book. Still, if you MUST have a book about this topic, this one will give you all the basics, but don't expect any revolutionary new ideas to conquer this bothersome syndrome.
Best little book on heartburn.......2003-04-15
I have read this book three times and each time I have gotten benefit from it. It continue to be by my bedside. This says it all cos the other book is my bible !
The causes and relief of heartburn are explained better than any other book I've read. I am in the minority of patients with severe heartburn that needed a Nisan Operation. I wish my doctor had looked at this book it would have kept my doctor and hospital bills down. I give it my highest recommendation.
Superlative for the patient with Heartburn.......2003-04-15
... I have never seen as biased and unfair a report ! It is apparently more easy to be critical than correct, Folks !
My own personal review of this book is in agreement with the majority and that includes some recognized top reviewers. It is simply great. Accurate information given in a succint manner from well researched material....The approach adopted in this book is current, well-balanced and readable. I recommend this to my clients most of whom are actively seeking alternate medicines to common medical problems such as heartburn
Excellent and thorough!.......2003-03-07
This books covers it all, from what heartburn is to what you can do about it, including medications, alternative remedies (who knew ginger helped heartburn), lifestyle remedies like raising the head of your bed and much more. There's also a chapter about children with GERD, another chapter on pregnancy (when many women have heartburn) and a chapter on heartburn in the elderly. This book can't be beat---although if you buy it, YOU can beat your heartburn problem!

Excellent Resource Book on food & digestive medical exams.......2007-09-27
I have read & referenced a number of books on digestive health. This book is excellent. It is one of the first that clearly & quickly gives you the information you need on food but also the medical exams to detect digestive health problems. Also, the book does a great job of giving you the advantages and disadvantages. For example, the authors talk about a food and then caution on potential problem. The authors talk about medicines like proton pump inhibitors, antacids, milk of magnesium and then give you the advantages and disadvantages. The authors talk about medical tests and how they are conducted, how to prepare, questions to ask your doctor, etc... The book is an excellent resource for anyone who wants to prevent a digestive problem, or suspects that they have a digestive problem, or is living with a digestive problem or recovering from one.

Good Overview and Handy Recipes.......2007-01-18
This book gives a good overview of the problem, with a lot of basic information with a good level of detail, but in not too technical terms.
The diet recommendations are great, and helped me put together the best diet plan for me. I especially appreciated the explanations of why different foods are bad for you, because there are about 4 different ways foods can contribute to the GERD problem. One or two of the meal plan suggestions might be questionable, such as eating strawberries when you have severe pain, but otherwise, it does a great job. The recipes are helpful, too.
A Disapointment.......2007-01-04
I had high hopes for this book but they were not fulfilled. The information section would only be helpful to people who are totally new to the wonderless world of acid reflux it is also somewhat depressing.
The recipes are ok but they aren't that wonderful
This book is definently not the place to start if you need help with this problem
Good Luck to us all
A GERD Sufferer.......2006-11-05

"Chronic Heartburn" Is a Sweet Dish.......2006-06-05
In an area filled to the lid with cookbooks of every taste and portion, "Chronic Heartburn: Managing Acid Reflux and GERD Through Understanding, Diet and Lifestyle" is a welcome and well-prepared arrival for gastronomical considerations little served at present. For anyone who suffers heartburn, and thereby tends to view the kitchen with some trepidation, "Chronic Heartburn" is a gateway to culinary freedom and delicious experience. As enjoyable to read as it is written and researched, the book offers everything: causal information of acid reflux (including informative diagrams), treatment options (including herbal ones), lifestyle modifications, guides to foods that hurt and heal, charts for effectively managing heartburn, and over one-hundred recipes, from soups to smoothies to main-course meats and seafood. Among my favorites: grilled halibut with papaya salsa, Russian-style borscht and mango chicken. As one who, like many, does suffer bouts of heartburn, I've come across few books that so effectively take the worry out of dining.
Great recipes!.......2006-05-16
This book is not only informative with easy-to-comprehend details about the digestive system, but also a wonderful cookbook! It has healthy recipes that are good for people who suffer from heartburn, acid reflux, and other digestive ailments. Yet, these recipes are great for dieters, veggie lovers, and those who just want to eat healthy foods. The Smoothies and Juices are fantastic drinks with summer approaching! This is a must-have book for healthy eating.
