Book Description

Two idealistic scientists unwittingly developing the deadliest virus the world has ever known...A family making desperate choices as they struggle to survive the Infection's initial outbreak...A lone gunslinging survivor battling the Infected in a decimated London...Four original tales chronicling the greatest horror humanity has ever faced come together in a bloody conclusion as terrifying as the Rage Virus itself.

Written by horror master Steve Niles (creator of the classic 30 Days of Night) and illustrated by three of the most terrifyingly talented illustrators working in comics today, 28 Days Later: The Aftermath begins before the hit movie—and ends with a shocking revelation that leads into the events of the sequel, 28 Weeks Later.

3 out of 5 stars Does it Really Matter How the Virus Began?.......2007-10-08

This graphic novel gets the unenviable job of telling the "story behind the story" of the 28 Days/Weeks Later films. Since the movies stand on their own without explaining where the virus came from, the graphic novel isn't entirely necessary. Egotistical scientists in lab coats working on monkeys? Dubious ethics? We've seen it all before. The coloring, by Dennis Calero, is awash in darkly muted tones, although the art (by four different artists) isn't as consistent.

3 out of 5 stars 3 1/2 stars.......2007-09-03

I really hate only being able to give this comic three and a half stars, I really do. One reason is that I'm a big fan of both the 28 Days Later movie and Steve Niles, but another was that this had so much potential and promise that it hurts to not be able to score it perfectly. I'm not going to rehash the plots of the four stories, since that's been done in most of the other reviews. Character development is in the low, which is ok I guess since I didn't like any of these characters enough to care that much, aside from the brother/sister. The art in most of the stories is a little too cartoonish for me, but act three had great art, scratchier and darker than the others, which is great because it reminded me of Ben Templesmith a little bit, and I'm a fiend for Ben Templesmith. The dialog is huge, though, making this book a very quick read, and some of the pages where the text is near the spine gets hidden by the fold (at least my copy). Some of the story points are a little confusing, such as how a person who committed suicide in the first act managed to survive it in the third act. But, overall, if you were a fan of the movie why not buy this? It's a decent quick read, and some of the art is really great. Just don't expect anything revolutionary, like Steve Niles's '30 Days of Night'. Take it for what it is- something to add on to the 28 Days Later mythology. You might, however, laugh when it's discovered why the Infected know who is and isn't. I did.

4 out of 5 stars great book.,.. so so ending.......2007-08-07

first off the art and writing in this one is very well done. the story moves fast and was quite fun to read... my only problem was that it ended to abruptly. the story is about a disease and a government cover-up. if you are a fan of steve niles you will like this one.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointingly lame.......2007-07-27

Supposedly a brigde between Danny Boyle's surprisingly great film 28 Days Later, and the recent sequel 28 Weeks Later; 28 Days Later: The Aftermath is a collection of short stories revolving around the original outbreak from the first film. Scripted by horror comic maestro Steve Niles (30 Days of Night), 28 Days Later: The Aftermath throws such things as character development and suspense out the window, and instead piles on the gore. While this isn't necessarily a bad thing for some, the action is so incoherent, and the stories overall themselves just aren't very compelling. Personally, I've always felt that Niles has been overrated as a comic writer, as all his recent works have suffered from the same flaws: promising story with little delivery. The art here is pretty good though, with enough blood and gore to satisfy the most gore hungry comic readers. That aside though, 28 Days Later: The Aftermath can't touch either film in terms of quality, and as a movie tie-in, it fails as well.

4 out of 5 stars Great stories, but too short.......2007-05-21

First off, I loved the styles of the art work. The stories were great, and it was awesome how they all connected, but they left a bitter-sweet taste in my mouth... Why were they so short? While they left you hanging just enough to use your own imagination (sometimes that's just fun.), it was a little disappointing. However, being the fan that I am of the story, I would still highly recommend picking up a used copy.

Book Description

After September 11th, 2001, the Ground Zero site in New York City was classified as a crime scene and only those directly involved in the recovery efforts were allowed inside. The press was also prohibited from the site, but with the help of the Museum of the City of New York and sympathetic city officials, award-winning photographer Joel Meyerowitz managed to obtain unlimited access. By ingenuity and sheer determination, he was the only photographer granted unimpeded right of entry into Ground Zero.

For 9 months, during the day and night, Meyerowitz photographed "the pile," as the World Trade Center came to be known, and the over 800 people a day that were working in it. Influenced by Walker Evans and Dorothea Lange's work for the Farm Security Administration during the Great Depression, he knew that if he didn't make a photographic record of the unprecedented recovery efforts, "there would be no history."

Marking the 5th anniversary of September 11th, Phaidon Press has published this extraordinary new book AFTERMATH: THE WORLD TRADE CENTER ARCHIVE with photographs and text by Joel Meyerowitz, which will feature, for the first time, the vast collection of Meyerowitz's previously unpublished photos from Ground Zero along with the engaging account of his experience in his own words. This historic publication is the only existing photographic record of the monumental recovery efforts post-9/11.

From portraits of the people he met to the accidental beauty of the ruins at dusk, AFTERMATH features 400 breathtaking color photographs, many taken with a large format camera. Bronx-born Meyerowitz brings his trademark sensitivity, intelligence and eye for beauty to these poignant images that will hold an important place in American history.

AFTERMATH brings to life the tireless determination of the scores of individuals who assisted in the clean-up process, including construction workers, police officers, firefighters, welders or "burners," engineers, crane operators and volunteers. Presented on a monumental scale, and interspersed with fascinating stories, the book documents the transformation of the site chronologically from piles of devastation to an empty pit six stories below ground. This landmark book offers current and future generations the opportunity to finally travel inside a forbidden city where thousands were brought together by a common cause.

"I was taking pictures for everyone who didn't have access to the site," says Meyerowitz in AFTERMATH, "so I decided to work with a large-format wooden view camera. This camera was impossible to hide, but it enabled me to make images of the fullest description, with a sense of deep space. I wanted to communicate what it felt like to be in there as well as what it looked like: to show the pile's incredible intricacy and visceral power.... I could provide a window for everyone else who wanted to be there, too--to help, or to grieve, or simply to try to understand what had happened to our city."

The World Trade Center Archive, consisting of thousands of Meyerowitz's images, is part of the permanent collection of the Museum of the City of New York where it is available for research, exhibition and publication. For the past few years, a small selection of these photographs was featured in an exhibition, "After September 11: Images from Ground Zero," which traveled to more than 200 cities in 60 countries, reaching over 3.5 million people.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Record of an Important Part of Our History.......2007-10-08

Meyerowitz his taken a step out of his usual repetoire in making these remarkable photographs. He has provided us with a devastating and incredibly imporant record of all that transpired in the Aftermath of the 9/11 tragedy. We have been staurated with images of the event itself; what we see here is the heroic and painstaking recovery work that followed.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing collection of photographs by a very gifted photographer.......2007-07-14

I first saw photographs from this collection at the Museum of Modern Art in Salzburg, Austria. Anyone who entered the gallery was immediately struck by a panorama of ground zero on one wall, each emitting an audible gasp, then standing before it for several minutes in silence. Meyerowitz is an extremely gifted photgrapher, and I recommend other of his collections for viewing. Cape Light: Color Photographs by Joel Meyerowitz, Tuscany: Inside the Light: Inside the Light (Photography). The "Aftermath" collection is the only archive of the activities following 9/11 at ground zero, and it is quite moving. Meyerowitz had access to many vantage points to capture for posterity the many facets of ground zero and this tragic event in our history. Viewing these photos takes time and thought, as Meyerowitz has also included brief descriptions and stories about each photograph. You will be struck by many emotions, sadness, anger, shock, and awe. But, there is an eeriness and a beauty, as well as hope in these photographs, inspired by the photographer's exquisite eye for detail, composition, lines, faces, and light. Photographers, professional and amateur alike, will deeply appreciate and learn from these aspects. Anyone to whom I have shown this book has been as immensely moved as I, from the UPS driver who delivered the package, to my father, a refugee of WWII, who still cannot speak easily of the events of 9/11. This book is highly recommended as an addition for one's library.

5 out of 5 stars A True Memorial.......2007-04-13

Aftermath represents the efforts of Joel Meyerowitz to document the destruction and cleanup of the World Trade Center following 9/11. This is a beefy coffee table book that is large enough to give his photos some real impact. Unlike most photo essays, however, you won't find hundreds of beautiful images. After a couple of pages show what New York's skyline once looked like, you are confronted by image after image of the horrific destruction of these huge landmarks. There are also many instances where we see the people who worked the cleanup site. Many of these are the most moving images as you can imagine the emotions that sometimes overcame these men and women who were there every day for months on end.

In addition to the photos, Mr. Meyerowitz also shares some anecdotes about what he went through to get these photos. He also talks about some of the people he met. I found these stories at least as powerful as his words. Most Americans were obviously distraught by the events of that day, but most of us were also able to start moving on with our lives and slowly put it behind us. But these people were there on the ground confronting the effects for months. Recovering bodies and personal objects, as well as being asked by survivors to put mementos on the pile of rubble as little memorials to their lost loved ones.

This is not the happiest book you can buy. It doesn't have the prettiest photos or the most elegant prose. But it may be the most worthwhile book I've ever purchased. I would urge everyone to buy a copy and read it cover to cover.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Documentary.......2007-03-28

I have other books on the 9/11 disaster but this is by far the most comprehensive. The photographs are excellent. The price was reasonable for the quality.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible 9-11 Photos!!.......2007-03-04

Of all the books on the aftermath of 9-11, this is absolutely the best ever!! These photographs are stunning and capture all of the remaining structures at Ground Zero. This is the most comprehensive book I have seen to date. I highly recommend it.

Book Description

If you thought having a threesome could wreak havoc on a relationship, Monica from My Woman His Wife is back to show you why even the mere thought of a menage a trios with your spouse and an outsider should never enter your imagination.

It's been three months since the Cinque household has been turned upside down by a sexual tryst gone terribly wrong. Although Jasmine and James are making moves to put their broken home and broken hearts back together, past lies and a lack of trust make it almost impossible to salvage what once was sacred. It's even harder when with a conniving woman like Monica throwing salt in the wounds from the sidelines because she still hasn't gotten what she wants.

Old family secrets are revealed and half truths are exposed as marriage vows are put to the test, painful memories are relived, and revenge is at the top of everyone's list. Drama, betrayal, and lust are all found on the pages of Aftermath -- when once just isn't enough.

3 out of 5 stars DRAMA FILLED for real!!.......2007-09-19

This book picked right up where the other one left off! Drama, twists, sex, and more drama! It's sad but funny to see how STUPID some of the people can be. I mean to KEEP putting yourself bad situation after bad situation is just.... well... stupid!! :-) It really makes you wonder about people and the power of a woman.

4 out of 5 stars The Aftermath.......2007-09-12

A follow up to My Woman His Wife. If you read one you should read the other. The Plot thickens and gets better. Another page turner. Boring End.

4 out of 5 stars Worth the read..........2007-09-07

It has been a while since I read "My Woman, His Wife" so it took me a while to figure out what was going on. Once I did, I was really intrigued. Monica was one cold sistah...yeah, both James and Jazz were wrong too, but Monica was a piece of work. However, based upon her childhood and the turmoil she endured, I found myself feeling sorry for her at times. She was just determined to not let anybody punk her. I couldn't believe that she was still trying to break up the couple by telling James about the "twins from the gym" even after she left her baby in their care.

I'd recommend this book to anyone over 18, but you have to read "My Woman, His Wife" first. You won't be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars Sorry to say............2007-08-08

Well, I have to say after reading the first book to this. I was very disappointed. It told why Monica turned out the way she did, but the story was rather boring to me. I felt like it was almost a joke. I was really rushing to finish this book. I have nothing more to say. It only focused on Monica and the whole story about the pregnancies, I mean come on really.

3 out of 5 stars Not Bad.......2007-07-19

For those who don't know this is the sequel to My Woman His Wife so you must read that one first. I agree with Princeluva in that I was expecting a much more exciting ending. Sometimes it seemed that the author was a bit repetitive forgetting that she had just said the same thing 4 lines prior. Other than those few discrepancies this book was a page turner. I finished this book just as fast as I finish my Zane books. You would think Monica would sit down somewhere after all that has happened to her, but she just had to have the final word in the end with that doggone letter. Was it really necessary for her to add that junk about Jazz and those twins at the gym? Now that was uncalled for.

Book Description

As National Public Radio's much loved and respected senior foreign correspondent Anne Garrels has covered conflicts in Chechnya, Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan, and Iraq. In Naked in Baghdad she reveals how as one of only sixteen non-embedded journalists who stayed in the now legendary Palestine Hotel throughout the American invasion she managed to deliver the most immediate, insightful and independent reports with unparalleled vividness and immediacy. Her evolving relationship with her Iraqi driver/minder Amer, and the wonderful e-mail bulletins sent to friends by her husband, Vint Lawrence, counterpoint the daily events of her life in Baghdad, and result in a deeply moving, and intimate portrait by one of bravest and most enlightening news reporters.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The only way this book could be enhanced..........2006-02-23

The only way this book could be enhanced is to have a CD of her broadcasts for NPR. Unfortunately I live in a part of the country where NPR broadcasts are hard to get and it could have made it even better. Unfortunately because I didn't get to hear the broadcasts I could only guess at their content from what the book mentioned. She writes well and seems to find the "hidden stories". Her husband's e-mails are a great voice from the other side of the correspondents life. Itr only adds to the pleasure that he is also a great writer. He had me laughing at some points I certainly hadn't expected to laugh. Overall though the book is great and highly recommended, however I'm sure it's even better if you've heard her NPR reports.

5 out of 5 stars True Journalisam.......2006-01-24

Enough good words have been said about the book. But ultimately, this book is not about the war. That's why readers who expected to get detailed war stories will be disappointed.

It's about true journalism. Annie showed us the grace under fire, the courage to pursuit the truth, the genuine care for the people she reported on, and above all, the dedication to give a voice to the people who couldn't speak for themselves.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing chance to learn the story behind that voice on the radio.......2005-08-30

As a listener to NPR, I feel so much closer to Garrels after learning the backstory behind her reports from the trenches of Iraq. She has extreme skill and intuition at conducting herself in a foreign country, at making people willing to talk, at befriending the right people.

I learned a lot about how much the Iraqi government practiced supression in the old regime. People were terrified for their lives if they talked to foreign reporters, and Garrels had to pay many bribes to get press credentials. When leaving Iraq, corrupt officials invent tests and fees for Garrels and her assistant to pay. Her stories humanized the Iraqi conflict for me--I met both crooks and good guys through Garrels.

Garrels has a great storytelling style. She'll tell an anecdote and then end with a biting one line zinger. She's as taltened on paper as she is on the air, and I'll be watching for more from this amazing woman.

4 out of 5 stars Another view!.......2005-06-21

Learning Iraq from her is totally different than Television. This is another perspective to war. It is possible to find Iraqi individuals feelings about all situation. Book gives you Iraq before the war, during the war, and after the war. This historical event is explained very well. Book name comes from her naked reporting. Because, she was hiding her satellite phone from Iraqi officers. During the broadcast she reports naked and if officer comes she will say them she is naked and gets extra time for hiding the phone before open the door. Also she slips away from AIDS test due to her age.

This is another must read book for Iraq war.

5 out of 5 stars Annie lays her soul bare in Baghdad.......2005-05-30

I used to hear NPR's anchors say "Thanks, Annie," as they said goodby to each other at the end of even the shortest of broadcasts from Baghdad. After reading this book, I know why. Even the use of her nickname on the air was a way of telling her they cared about her safety, and to take care of herself. And, with the help of Amer, she did, the best she could. This book didn't give sweeping overviews of how the buildup to the war, and then the war itself, went. The Iraqi government was managing the reporters too much for that. But she got away from her minder as much as she could and learned as much as she could, and let the American people know as much as she could. Here, in this book, is the back story of what could not safely be said on the air. It is full of telling details of people she met, their hopes and fears, the things they said and did not say, especially how those changed depending on whether a government official was within hearing distance. She also tells what it was like to be one of only a few reporters left, with few supplies, no electricity, and constant harrassment and demands for bribes. I knew she was a great reporter, and had reported on other wars. This book made me see exactly why she is a great reporter. She is tenacious and courageous and knows what stories to go after. She is willing to use the fact that she is a woman, both with women and men, and the fact that she is no longer young, to get interviews with all kinds of people. She trusts her gut. And when it's time to get out, she gets out. This book taught me more about the war in Iraq than anything else I've read. I just recommended it to a friend who has two sons serving there. I recommend it to others who want to see, not the broad military sweep, but what the buildup and beginning of the war were like for the people.

Book Description

When Judith Herman's Trauma and Recovery was first published five years ago, it was hailed as a groundbreaking work. In the intervening years, Herman's now classic volume has changed the way we think about and treat traumatic events and trauma victims. In a new introduction, Herman chronicles the incredible response the book has elicited and explains how the issues surrounding the topic of trauma and recovery have shifted within the clinical community and the culture at large. Trauma and Recovery brings a new level of understanding to a set of problems usually considered individually. Herman draws on her own cutting-edge research on domestic violence, as well as on a vast literature of combat veterans and victims of political terror, to show the parallels between private terrors such as rape and public traumas such as terrorism. The book puts individual experience in a broader political frame, arguing that psychological trauma can be understood only in a social context. Meticulously documented and frequently using the victims own words as well as those from classic literary works and prison diaries, Trauma and Recovery is a powerful work that will continue to profoundly impact our thinking.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent foundation book.......2007-08-10

This book has been around for a while (first published in 1992), but it's still an excellent resource for understanding trauma. I believe that reading Trauma and Recovery will be helpful to trauma victims, although it does not cover current treatments such as EMDR, Somatic Experiencing (SE), and Energy Psychology (EP). --Fred P. Gallo, PhD, author of Energy Tapping for Trauma: Rapid Relief from Post-Traumatic Stress Using Energy Psychology

5 out of 5 stars Trauma and Recovery: The Aftermath of Violence--from Domestic Abuse to Political Terror.......2007-04-05

Judith Herman has done an incredible service to all mankind with this book.
This book is a must for women who have been victims of abuse and trauma.
Her amazing ability to understand and articulate trauma is nothing short of empowering!

5 out of 5 stars Toss out the rest and stick with the best.......2007-03-29

I've read lots of books about trauma but this, by far, is the best I've found. It is written with great compassion and without bias. This is a well written clinical analysis of trauma in all it's forms and the recovery process which follows. I highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Enlightening.......2007-02-20

This book was a suggested read from a counselor/pastor, and I'm glad I did. The author offers the reader an enlightening description and understanding of Complex PTSD. It is a great educational tool. It was exactly what was needed at the time. It can also be a good "first step" item. It helped pinpoint the issue and explain the authour's theories on addressing the issue. It set a great course to also find appropriate assistance. Armed with a name, understanding, and appropriate language the enlightened reader can pursue even more education and professional assistance if needed. This book turned out to be a light in a very dark place and I have already recommended it to others.

5 out of 5 stars Cause and Effect.......2007-02-18

Dr. herman looks at the molestations of people and describes the affects, both long term and short term, with a look at the recovery process. The atrocities are detailed. This book is very conclusive, scientific in its approach.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Read.......2007-05-25

I was thoroughly educated. Though the author isn't an African American, unlike many non-black authors, I did not detect any bias or racism. He just presented truths. I higly recommend this book for those interested in African American history after the civil war.

5 out of 5 stars A classic work.......2006-02-09

Anyone with a serious interest in the Civil War should read Been in the Storm So Long. Litwacks's work is more than just black history; it explores the principle cause and consequence of the war. Unlike many general histories that preceded it, "Been in the Storm" relies heavily on primary sources. War-era diaries and letters of whites, Union Army records, Freedman's bureau reports, and Depression-era interviews of former slaves and their children, provide most of the material. The outrage of southern whites who watched trusted slaves pick up and leave when freedom came, echoes throughout the book. So too does the uncertainty of the era. Some blacks may have dreamed big, but most just wanted freedom, security, and opportunity. Though some lasting gains were made, the struggle for full freedom would be much longer.
Certainly, "Been in the Storm" is the place to start for Emancipation reading. Though the coverage of early black politics was not as strong as in Eric Foner' Reconstruction, I know of no equal for the early social consequences of Emancipation.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable study of African Americans after emancipation.......2004-11-12

Few populations in history have gone through the dramatic changes that African Americans underwent at the end of the Civil War. People who had suffered slavery for generations suddenly found themselves free, a welcome yet uncertain status that required considerable exploration and adjustment. Leon Litwack's book examines this transition, concentrating on how freed African Americans perceived freedom and how they shaped the conditions of their freedom in the aftermath of the Civil War.

For many African Americans, change began with the Civil War. Slaves in areas occupied by Union soldiers would be liberated from bondage, while many African Americans took up arms as the war went on. The end of the war and the ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment meant freedom for African Americans, freedom to live their lives as they wanted. For most, the first step was finding their scattered families and coming to terms with their time as slaves. Freedom also meant discovering a new identity, especially with regards to their former masters, as African Americans now had to deal with whites in new ways both socially and in the workplace. Finally, African Americans faced the challenge of creating a new society free of the restrictions of slave life, which led to the establishment of modes of religion, politics, and the press to serve their particular interests.

Litwack's book is an indispensable study of African Americans in the aftermath of emancipation. Based on a wealth of primary sources (including the invaluable collection of oral interviews conducted by the Federal Writers' Project during the 1930s), he argues that no set experience defined how African Americans dealt with freedom. What emancipation demonstrated was the interdependence that existed between African Americans and whites, an interdependence that did not end with freedom but was shaped by attitudes and tensions that remained from the experience of slavery. The result is a book that is essential reading for any student of the era, as well as for those seeking insight into race relations in America today.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book about slaves experiencing freedom.......2003-02-21

This book is gives an excellent synthesis as to how freedom was experienced in various regions of the South after 1863. One of the finest books within the historiography of American slavery and freedom. Litwack goes to great lengths explaining the freedom experience, the failures of the Freedmen's Bureau and the hesitations ex-slaves felt after 1863. A must read and must have for anyone interested in slavery, its aftermath and Reconstruction.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully Written with detailed descriptions of AfAm Strug.......1999-01-24

Professor Litwack is a superb writer/teacher in the field of the struggles of african americans. He fully understands and convincingly portrays the harsh realities of our shameful past in "Been in the Storm so Long".

Book Description

When my parents packed my brother, sister and me into the family van and drove us to Missouri for Spring Break, we brought our entirely imagined city-hardness with us. The hard truth that we were about to learn was that, in fact, we weren't tough kids at all. Our life in the city had not prepared us for anything. Nothing could prepare us for this.

A Rip in Heaven is Jeanine Cummins's story of a night in April 1991, when her two cousins, Julie and Robin Kerry, and her brother, Tom, were assaulted on the Chain of Rocks Bridge that spans the Mississippi River just outside of St. Louis. When, after a harrowing ordeal, Tom managed to escape the attackers and flag down help, he thought the nightmare would soon be over. He couldn't have been more wrong. Tom, his sister Jeanine, and their entire family were just at the beginning of a horrific odyssey through the aftermath of a violent crime, a world of shocking betrayal, endless heartbreak, and utter disillusionment. It was a trial by fire from which no one would emerge unscathed.

This is one family's intimate, immediate, and unforgettable story of what victims can suffer long after they should be safe.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Murder from the family's perspective.......2007-08-16

As one reviewer has noted, this is not a typical addition to the true crime genre. It shares much in common with Strange Piece of Paradise in that both are attempts by a victim/family member to depict the aftermath of a crime. Where Terri Jentz had to confront years of not knowing who her attacker was, Jeanine Cummins and family had to face having a beloved family member being accused of killing two other beloved family members.

It's hard to review a book such as this without a certain amount of sympathy entering into one's judgment. It is for me, at least. This is not the best written non-fiction book you'll ever read, nor is the prose in it the most fluid. It is also, because of Cummins' decision to tell this in the third-person, the most emotionally wrought. But it is better written than most first person accounts I've read. Cummins takes considerable pains to bring Julie and Robin Kerry to life, to make the reader feel the loss Cummins and her family felt. The horror of their deaths (and the nature of their deaths) is compounded when Cummins' brother is accused of their murders.

This is the story of the death of innocence, both literal and figurative. By the time the murders are caught, turn on each other and three are sentenced to death there little sense of justice for the family. Two girls have been gang-raped and murdered, one of the bodies has never been found. The survivor of the attacks has been first branded the likely suspect by the press then must relive the events over and over, in the trials and the subsequent parole hearings. As if this isn't enough agony, they must endure having the convicted murderers still claim their innocence and blame one of the victims. The question of Why? remains unanswered by the perpetrators and possibly unanswerable.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-07-10

I had this book on my book shelf for a while and hesitated to read it because I knew that it would be painful and depressing. This is the first book that I have read regarding true crime where you really feel to the core the effects and aftermath on the living. This book is excellent, well written, and one of the few books you read that will stay with you and effect how you process stories that you read and watch in the future. After reading this, you truly comprehend the pain and lasting effects that violence has on everyone left behind.

5 out of 5 stars A moving and important book.......2007-05-28

I have little to add to the other reviewers here. But as one who has written about victims myself, I believe this is the best account I've ever read of the devastation criminals leave in their wake.

Read this not merely to learn about a heinous crime or evil men. Read it to meet two wonderful young women, or maybe three -- Julie and Robin, the victims, and Jeanine Cummins, the author.

5 out of 5 stars A families point of view.......2007-01-27

I went to high school with Robin and Julie. I can't drive over the Mississippi River without thinking about them. The newspaper articles, and TV interviews in St Louis were mainly focused on Tom's (the cousin) guilt, and these "mystery 4 men". I was glad to hear a book had been written from "their" point of view. When I say "their" I mean Robin and Julie. Robin and Julie are gone, and no longer have a voice for themselves, so Jeanine did the best she could to capture this horrible moment in time, and the aftermath it caused.

I feel that as much hatred that she COULD have to the four men that murdered her cousins, and let her brother be blamed for the crimes, Jeanine was fair, and kind to the men. She did not make excuses for their actions, but she did explain how a fun night out, a decision to rob, could turn so dangerous and deadly in minutes.

5 out of 5 stars Heartwarming.......2007-01-25

Although this is a true crime book and heartbreaking, it is also a heartwarming story. The love and concern Ms. Cummins had for her brother and cousins radiated from the pages as she told the story of the death of her cousins and near death of her brother. I was so moved by the story that I sent Ms. Cummins an email to let her know how she touched me and that I wished her a great future as an author. I was so surprised a few months later to receive an answer back, thanking me for my email. What a class act and her family should be so proud. May her cousins rest in peace and her brother have a wonderful life.

Book Description

When he was a student in Paris, Truong Nhu Tang met Ho Chi Minh. Later he fought in the Vietnamese jungle and emerged as one of the major figures in the "fight for liberation" -- and one of the most determined adversaries of the United States. He became the Vietcong's Minister of Justice, but at the end of the war he fled the country in disillusionment and despair. He now lives in exile in Paris, the highest level official to have defected from Vietnam to the West. This is his candid, revealing and unforgettable autobiography.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A Rich Kid Goes To War.......2007-08-09

Basically this is a personal account of a priviledged Saigon family member who joins the Viet Cong and then becomes very disillusioned with the 'final victory'. While I enjoyed reading parts of this book, most of it reads like a personal diary with many names and characters who few even know.

As a very educated man, the author did not seem to understand that politically aggressive countries like the Soviet Union, the US, China, and even North Viet Nam need to control. So when the South Viet Nam government fell after the US left, North Viet Nam and the Soviet Union swept right into power. How could anyone not see this coming who actually lived most of his life there and dealt with these governments almost daily?

The author also had lived a very comfortable life in Paris for years as a student and later as a Viet Cong official. Later he would also make official visits to Eastern Bloc countries and the Soviet Union getting a good view of their poverty and bread lines. I was amazed that after he saw the contrast between communist countries and capitalistic countries he could ever embrace a communist ideology for his own country. He doesn't really explain his polictical expectations for Viet Nam.

The book describes the Viet Nam struggle from a personal view but never really measures the sacrifice of millions from many countries. The book talks about the 'glorious' meetings in the jungle and the words of 'Uncle Ho' in their hearts but it never discusses the 22,000 buried alive in the Cu Chi Tunnels, or the hundreds of thousands killed during B-52 attacks along the Ho Chi Minh Trail, or the millions dead in the Killing Fields of Cambodia, etc, etc. The irony of this war is that In the end, market forces are driving Viet Nam to a market-based economy where the communist government becomes more irrelevant every day. Capitalism was the enemy for so long and now it is consuming their country. Maybe the author should update his book because now the future is starting to look very bright for Viet Nam!

4 out of 5 stars A Vietcong Memoir: An Inside Account of the Vietnam War & Its aftermath.......2007-02-15

As a Vietnam veteran who survived the Tet Offensive, I was deeply moved to read about the war from the "other" side. Mr. Truong Nhu Tang describes in depth how dedicated the Vietcong leaders were. They were "nationalists" who were intent on saving their country from politicians whom they perceived to be corrupt elitists. After reading his description of life in the jungle it is a wonder any of them survived the hardships of such an existence. The evolution of the Ho Chi Minh Trail was fascinating. I was amazed at The dedication of the workers who were responsible for keeping the trail open...bomb craters from night bombing runs were either filled or detoured around.

4 out of 5 stars Poignant personal account of optimism, revolution, and political disillusionment.......2006-11-25

This is more than an inside story of the Vietcong, it is a personal account of one young man's journey through political optimism to revolutionary zeal to political disillusionment. It is a moving personal tale of the cost paid by so many for what their strongly-held convictions and then the realization that what they fought to win was worse than what they defeated. It is the personal side of revolution and the demise of so many revolutionaries once the struggle is over. A very moving account of the power of an idea and its demands on the lives of those it touches.

4 out of 5 stars HEAVY ON POLITICS, NOT ON GUERILLA WARFARE.......2005-05-24

I gladly award this book a 4-star rating. The author expresses himself well, and certainly has a lot to say about Vietnam's military struggle. He details Vietnam's fight against (1) the French; (2) the U.S.; and (3) North Vietnam and their Soviet supporters.

What's missing is a more gritty description of guerilla warfare. As I was reading this I wrote in the column "So who invented the perkinje pit?", and "How effective were the coca-cola cans you guys turned into bombs?" and "How did you convince housewives to become snipers and kill people?" There is nothing like that here. According to the author the Viet Cong were one big, happy family that had fun together when they weren't being tragically bombed by American B-52s.

Tang's description of Vietnamese politics is even a bit sketchy. He talks quite a bit about Ho Chi Minh's beliefs in "independence," and what a humble, sweet guy "Uncle Ho" was. He never says what Ho's beliefs about guerilla warfare were. Really, how did this "Sweet guy" resolve to have his people put on black pajamas and become killers?

With his high and mighty position in the Viet Cong administration, Tang would have known where the V.C.'s supplies were coming from. He mentions the Ho Chi Minh trail, but nothing about who gave all those poor vietnamese the gear they used. He says that in 1975 the South Vietnamese army (enemies of the Viet Cong) were going to be "outgunned." I remember writing in the column "WHERE'D YOU GET THE GUNS, TANG?"

Basically, this is a very good book. It is NOT a definitive account of guerilla warfare, however.

3 out of 5 stars A Biography, with little analysis/explanation of the NLF.......2003-11-12

I chose to read this book because of my interest in the Vietnam War. I like a balanced approach, and wanted to see what the opposition had to say, other than the official Communist party line.

While the author is impressive, and lead an interesting life, I ws dissapointed by the book. Its mostly his biography, with little analysis.

What I was looking for was a book by someone from the COmmunist side on the forming, organisation, and running of the NLF. What were their concerns, difficulties etc. A few pages address this, but the vast majority are about the author and some of his friends.

As a biography its fine, but as a book on the NLF theer isnt enough there. It could have been cut by 2/3.
I can't recommend it for students of the Vietnam War.

2 out of 5 stars For Women Only.......2001-04-13

I purchased this book for my friend to help him understand what his kids were going through and help him learn to deal with a bitter ex-wife. I thought the book would offer solutions to co-parenting issues or offer advise on how to work with a less-than-amicable former spouse. Instead, this book focussed on women who were dealing with deliquent husbands - how to make them pay, how to keep them involved, etc. It would have been more helpful to additionally offer advise on how to make her share the kids, how to make her co-parent with him, how help her move beyond the fight of the parents to the health of the children. I know the roles can be reversed in either case, but the author obviously felt that women were more likely to nurture the children. This, unfortunately, is not always the case.

5 out of 5 stars great practical advice.......2000-01-15

There were so many great common sense pieces of advice..lots of good stories that let you know, others have been through this..I read this book 5 years ago when going through a divorce..with lots of hard work, my ex an I have avoided the pitfalls of beating each other with our child...We have remained parents together...

This book was a help!

5 out of 5 stars Need Help? Advice? Encouragement? Guidance? READ THIS BOOK!.......1999-12-15

This book can do wonders. It covers so much ground in a clear, concise manner. Every paragraph or two provided either insight, encouragement or advice. I bought other books on the subject of divorce and children, but nothing compares to this book. You can look for other books, but this is all you will need. The only exception, is the campanion book written by Lansky, "It's Not Your Fault, Koko Bear" Another must for those parents with young children. Both books will serve parents well. If your Ex is difficult to deal with, get this book for them. It can help defuse situations and refocus them to do the right things for the child(ren) they love.

5 out of 5 stars A tremendous resource for explaining divorce to kids.............1998-06-12

This book was (and is) of tremendous help to me and my ex-husband in explaining our pending divorce and separation to our children. I cannot stress enough how useful this one little book was. It was the first and only book that I found that in clear and concise terms addressed what the children at various ages "hear" when you say, "Mommy and Daddy are getting a divorce." I cannot recommend this book highly enough. If you are in a (admittedly sad) situation where you are about to separate and need to know how to discuss it effectively with your children, this is the book for you!

Book Description

Whether a novice or an expert on the Civil War, readers will find This Terrible War to be a well-designed and fully developed book, and a powerful tool in learning about the Civil War and its foreground and aftermath. The book provides an analysis of the United States in the time leading up to the war—the slavery debate, the differences between North and South, the economic and social climate of the country—and moves into the war itself, presenting stories of both common soldiers and powerful military figures. The authors also trace the impact and eventual abolition of slavery, examining the role of African-Americans during the war. They conclude that the victory of the North resulted from superior resources and manpower, but also examine other contributing factors—providing a well-rounded, interesting and thorough analysis. The final section of the book describes the aftermath of the war, and the Epilogue examines how Americans have remembered the Civil War in later years. Ideal for anyone interested in the United States Civil War or US military history in general.

4 out of 5 stars Hardcover not a better buy.......2005-08-26

Please be advised the hardcover edition of this book does not contain the primary source documents, which unfortunately for me my professor is using for the class. I already bought the hardcover from Amazon and now I have to buy a paperback edition to fulfill the requirements for the course. There is a big difference in a hardcover edition with 435 pages(but my hardcover has 416??) and a paperback with over 500.
I suggest you buy the paperback if you are using it for a class because the documents are important to have and integral to the study of history anyway.
