Surprisingly, this long essay about society and art and sexism is one of Woolf's most accessible works. Woolf, a major modernist writer and critic, takes us on an erudite yet conversational--and completely entertaining--walk around the history of women in writing, smoothly comparing the architecture of sentences by the likes of William Shakespeare and Jane Austen, all the while lampooning the chauvinistic state of university education in the England of her day. When she concluded that to achieve their full greatness as writers women will need a solid income and a privacy, Woolf pretty much invented modern feminist criticism.

Book Description

Why is it that men, and not women, have always had power, wealth, and fame? Woolf cites the two keys to freedom: fixed income and one’s own room. Foreword by Mary Gordon.

5 out of 5 stars A must have.......2007-01-03

A timeless essay not only for women. Good hard binding that will keep. It's a must have if you like English literature.

4 out of 5 stars A woman's liberation classic .......2006-05-23

This is a beautifully written and highly enjoyable exploration of the history of women in writing. It is also a plea for the liberation of women, and their full entrance into the world of Literature. Woolf argues that a woman needs financial independence, a room , that is a space of her own, if she is to be able to truly create. She also needs the kind of access to everyday life that women confined to hearth and home were as she sees it, traditionally denied.
She urges that Woman enter into all fields of writing, and develop in directions they had no opportunity to develop in before.
She also perhaps reflecting on her own experience and nature argues for the androgynous nature of the creator, seeing in Shakespeare, Keats and certainly Proust a strong feminine element.
Woolf anticipates and perhaps in some sense helps creates the vast flourishing of Literature written by women which will come in the decades after her.

4 out of 5 stars a room for what?.......2006-03-14

This essay reunites several works from Virginia Woolf about the right of women to possess a place - a room- to read, write and work, intended that not as domestic work as was usual for women during many times.
This book is very good. The problem with it today is many people uses this work only as a vindicating feminist weapon, while few people has truly read it, but remember, Virginia Woolf wanted that room not for itself, but for a finality: to do an intellectual task inside. Some people forgets this fundamental fact.

5 out of 5 stars To get a room of one's own.......2006-02-17

Woolf's argument that "a woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction," holds true not just for fiction but for any activity a woman wants to pursue. The early 20th century essay is still widely relevant, and not just in developing countries.

On the reading style, this essay is much more accessible, compared to say `Mrs. Dalloway' and `To the Lighthouse'. Reading it felt like having a conversation with someone who was not just erudite, but also reflected some of my own thoughts and beliefs. Especially as I believe that economic independence and resource availability could be key to overturning the notions of sexual inequality.

Many thanks to Woolf for airing these thoughts and inspiring the rest of us.

Book Description

The odd thing about Walter Schoen, German born but now running a butcher shop in Detroit, he's a dead ringer for Heinrich Himmler, head of the SS and the Gestapo. They even share the same birthday.

Honey Deal, Walter's American wife, doesn't know that Walter is a member of a spy ring that sends U.S. war production data to Germany and gives shelter to escaped German prisoners of war. But she's tired of telling him jokes he doesn't understand—it's time to get a divorce.

Along comes Carl Webster, the hot kid of the Marshals Service. He's looking for Jurgen Schrenk, a former Afrika Korps officer who escaped from a POW camp in Oklahoma. Carl's pretty sure Walter's involved with keeping Schrenk hidden, so Carl gets to know Honey, hoping she'll take him to Walter. Carl then meets Vera Mezwa, the nifty Ukrainian head of the spy ring who's better looking than Mata Hari, and her tricky lover Bohdan with the Buster Brown haircut and a sly way of killing.

Honey's a free spirit; she likes the hot kid marshal and doesn't much care that he's married. But all Carl wants is to get Jurgen Schrenk without getting shot. And then there's Otto—the Waffen-SS major who runs away with a nice Jewish girl. It's Elmore Leonard's world—gritty, funny, and full of surprises.

4 out of 5 stars More Character, Less Action Than A Typical Elmore Leonard.......2007-10-05

The characters in this novel are vivid and large, with the good guys and bad guys mingling as if they're all at the same high school dance. Much less a crime novel than a talky character study, it is a compelling book, but not one for someone looking for suspense or thrills. Elmore Leonard is one of our best working novelists, and I did very much enjoy this book, but I found myself wishing there was a bit more gunplay, murder, or other typical crime novel devices.

3 out of 5 stars Attitude.......2007-09-21

Not much action, but plenty of characters posing. Could have been a stage play with the twist at the end. People not wanting to do the jobs they are assigned, waitng for the war to end. It does make me want to research Otto Penzler.

4 out of 5 stars Octogenarian Marvel.......2007-09-04

I remember reading an interview with Elmore Leonard in which he said that if a writer is constantly casting about for different ways to express the verb "said" he's wasting his time. The key is the dialogue itself, not how one describes its utterance.

As I marveled at Up in Honey's Room's succinct, unexpected, witty dialogue, I was reminded of Leonard's statement again and again. Sure, this novel features characters that are a bit too outrageous, and sure, a few of the plot developments are worthy of an eye roll or two. Is it his best work? No, but please, make no mistake: This is a lean, funny book.

I hope that I can appreciate good writing like this when I'm 82... which is how old Leonard was when he wrote this novel!

3 out of 5 stars Uneven.......2007-08-24

This book is great when Honey is in the scene, but the scene's she's not a part of, which are many, tend to drag. The characters are strange, but rarely amusing. It's an OK book, but there are much better out there.

1 out of 5 stars Don't go up to "...Honey's Room".......2007-08-19

By Far the worst Elmore Leonard Book that I have ever read. Elmore Leonard is one of the Best American Novelists. But like all of us he grows old, and has apparently lost his ability to write. This book is all about waiting around for something to happen with some VERY uninteresting, unsympathetic people. The only redeeming feature of this novel is the return of "The Hot Kid". But Carlos couldn't do it all by himself. If you want to read Mr. Leonard try "Unknown Man #89" or "City primeval" and of Course "Glitz".

Book Description

Mary Russell and her husband Sherlock Holmes are back in Laurie R. King’s highly acclaimed New York Times bestselling mystery series. And this time the first couple of detection pair up to unlock the buried memory of a shocking crime with the power to kill again–lost somewhere in Russell’s own past.

After departing Bombay by ship, Mary Russell and her husband Sherlock Holmes are en route to the bustling modern city of San Francisco. There, Mary will settle some legal affairs surrounding the inheritance of her family’s old estate. But the closer they get to port, the more Mary finds herself prey to troubling dreams and irrational behavior–a point not lost on Holmes, much to Russell’s annoyance.

In 1906, when Mary was six, San Francisco was devastated by an earthquake and a raging fire that reduced the city to rubble. For years, Mary has denied any memory of the catastrophe that for days turned the fabled streets into hell on earth. But Holmes suspects that some hidden trauma connected with the “unforgettable” catastrophe may be the real culprit responsible for Mary’s memory lapse. And no sooner do they begin to familiarize themselves with the particulars of the Russell estate than it becomes apparent that whatever unpleasantness Mary has forgotten, it hasn’t forgotten her. Why does her father’s will forbid access to the house except in the presence of immediate family? Why did someone break in, then take nothing of any value? And why is Russell herself targeted for assassination?

The more questions they ask of Mary’s past, the more people from that past turn out to have died violent, unexplained deaths. Now, with the aid of a hard-boiled young detective and crime writer named Hammett, Russell and Holmes find themselves embroiled in a mystery that leads them through the winding streets of Chinatown to the unspoken secrets of a parent’s marriage and the tragic car “accident” that a fourteen-year-old Mary alone survived–an accident that may not have been an accident at all. What Russell is about to discover is that even a forgotten past never dies…and it can kill again.

2 out of 5 stars This is the big mystery of what happened to Mary's Family?.......2007-10-08

Anyone who has read a few of these mysteries knew that eventually King would get to the mystery that has haunted Russell since childhood: "What happened to cause the car accident that killed her parents and brother?"
Any reader of a mystery series knew that this "death by auto accident" angle had to play a role later on. The problem is, after delving through Chinatown, Feng shui, and investigation by San Francisco's favorite Dashiell Hammett, you end up sighing, "Is this it??"
To say I was disappointed is putting it mildly. The book is still competently written and has the interesting leads of Mary Russell and a human Sherlock Holmes to make this a decent time waster; however considering the quality of some of the other entries this really seems to be a series that is starting to run out of steam.

5 out of 5 stars It's a Pleasure.......2007-08-23

What a pleasure! I read these novels over and over, and continue enjoying them. The characters become friends, and I care what happens to them. The stories are interesting, and the backgrounds well-evoked. What more could a reader ask for?

5 out of 5 stars I love this author........2007-04-04

I have had such a hard time finding an author that I consistently like to follow. I have been thrilled that her novels are clean-cut, exciting adventure and historically interesting.

5 out of 5 stars Engrossing, especially via audio!.......2007-03-12

I'm a huge fan of this series, I've read them all multiple times. I haven't read any other Laurie King novels, I guess because I don't want to spoil the enthusiasm I have for this series. Each one is well researched and well written, and I especially loved getting some perspective from Holmes in this one. This was the first one I got in audio and I've already listened to it twice. I think the reader is excellent, does a great job setting a style and tone for each character. I wish she had read all the novels, I'd snap them up in a heartbeat. I typically donate audiobooks to the local library after I listen to them, but I just can't seem to part with this one. Hope King will continue the series in the near future. I love escaping into the world of Russel & Holmes.

5 out of 5 stars Best of Breed........2007-02-15

Great Books of the Western World, move over on your shelf and make room for one more.

I think this may very well be the greatest mystery/suspense novel I have ever read, and I've read many hundreds of them, as it's my favorite genre among the many that I do read.

But I don't expect you merely to take my word for it. Let me count the reasons why:
Any great book of fiction must meet the following criteria, in my opinion--
1. Be character driven rather than plot driven, filled with believable and fascinating characters.
2. Be written by an author who is not afraid to use words beautifully, in a powerful and provocative manner.
3. Contain an actual story, that is, a tale of change wrought within and/or upon a major character, with a series of miniclimaxes leading up to the ultimate climax.
4. Provide a spiritual, mental, and yes even physical impact upon the reader.
5. Be fully capable of standing alone, without reference to any series of which it is a part, and also provide delight and relevance for readers who are aware of other books in the same series, if there is a series.

'Locked Rooms' more than meets these standards. It sets new ones.

Mary Russel, young wife of an older Sherlock Holmes, at long last visits San Francisco, which she has not seen since she fled shortly after the death of her parents and only sibling when she was age 14.

This being a mystery novel, it should be no surprise [and therefore does not qualify as a spoiler] to learn that the tragedy was no accident, although it takes a fair while for Mary to figure this out, since she has been blocking many of her memories from that era. There is no such delay for Holmes himself, though he refrains from imposing his quicker realization onto his bewildered wife.

The plot is simple in one sense, in that it involves working out the details of whodunit, and why. But it is also extremely complex in another way, because the events were rather long ago, the trail stone cold, and the principal villain so cloaked in various sorts of guise and disguise that his or her identity is almost impossible for Mary to acknowledge for some long while.

Local color, Asian philosophy, numerous 'herrings' of various hues including red and a sort of 'pink,' and the presence of a person from so-called real life, a tubercular Dashiel Hammet, plus a San Francisco version of the Baker Street Irregulars, all conspire to lift this above even the highest reaches of the other books in the series. Laurie R. King just keeps getting better, especially in the Mary Russel tales, and the last three or four books among them have lifted her clearly out of the realm of mere genre [which she was never really in to begin with] and into the realm of literature.

All that's left for us possibly to hope for is that King now find some excuse to take Kate Martinelli, the heroine of her other major series, to London, which will bring everything full circle and allow us to start all over again.

We should be so lucky.

Book Description

Flora knows better than to take shortcuts in her family home, Crackpot Hall--the house has eleven thousand rooms, and ever since her mother banished the magickal butler, those rooms move around at random. But Flora is late for school, so she takes the unpredictable elevator anyway. Huge mistake. Lost in her own house, she stumbles upon the long-banished butler--and into a mind-blowing muddle of intrigue and betrayal that changes her world forever.
Full of wildly clever plot twists, this extraordinary first novel establishes Ysabeau Wilce as a compelling new voice in teen fantasy.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars once of the best of 2007 so far!.......2007-08-18

Well, after that title, there isn't much more to say except that Flora is a
wonderfully loveable girl and I think you'll enjoy getting to know her!
Oh, all right, I do have more to say:) Flora's father is mad, her mother is a general and the best line in a book I've ever read is in chapter 2. This is a strange and beautifully unique tale. This might be a hard sell for some of the teens I know, but it won't stop me from recommending it to everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Is the world ready for Wilce?.......2007-07-14

Here's a fact: Ysabeau S. Wilce is profoundly original. If you read all the customer reviews here, you'll get the sense that this is not your formula fantasy. But let's make that point more clearly--you will never read another story like this one (unless, possibly, it's her next one, which we all eagerly anticipate).

This is the opportunity to get in on the ground floor of what could, and certainly should, be the next story franchise that graduates from cult status to mainstream blockbuster. Wilce doesn't sugar coat the risks of adolescence: she dips them in ice cream, lights them on fire, and serves the reader a flaming torch of strange wonder.

Laughter and thrilling excitement are delightful companions all through this romp. The subtitle gives a sense of the former, but don't underestimate Wilce's storytelling: great characters in real trouble make for great reading, and Flora is a heroine who speaks equally to the reality as well as the ambitions of young people.

Oh yes, and while this is not specifically a unique observation, I'd also like to note that it is always refreshing to find a fantasy that does not take place in something that could pass for Northern Europe.

3 out of 5 stars Waiting for Number 2.......2007-07-11

I'm not sure yet how I feel about this book. I like it but then again I don't. What I like about it is the originality of the story. The world and its characters are fully developed and very interesting, especially Flora. What I really like about Flora is that she is not your average cookie-cutter, in-your-face, outspoken heroine who saves herself by swinging a sword. Flora on the other hand has self-confidence issues, often doubts her own abilities and has the same faults as any other regular teenager, which make her character more genuine. What I don't like about this novel is that the story itself seems to move rather unsteadily. It slows down then speeds up then slows down again. I also had a little trouble understanding some of the magic or "Current" lingo. A short glossary could have helped that. There are also a lot of cliffhangers that hopefully will turn up in the next book. All in all this book was good but not great, hopefully the second will be better.

5 out of 5 stars Original, spirited, and funny.......2007-06-04

Ysabeau Wilce has created a truly original imaginary world refreshingly free of the cliches of the fantasy genre. What's more, she's provided the perfect tour guide to this world: Flora Fyrdraaca, an irreverent, eager, believably adolescent narrator scheming to escape the expectations of her family and become a Ranger--a magic-using secret agent--instead of following family tradition into the army, madness, and doom. Assigned to write a speech in praise of her noble House, Flora narrowly rejects openings like "Crackpot Hall has 11,000 rooms but only one potty." Indeed, the ancestral pile has seen better days, partly for reasons bound up in the power plays of Flora's illustrious mother, a famous general who tolerates no insubordination and has disabled the magical Butler that should keep the house in order. Motivated partly by sympathy and partly by the desire to have someone else muck out the stable, Flora sets herself a quest to restore the Butler to his rightful place, but she soon discovers that the price of a little help with the housework can be, almost literally, her soul. Flora's quirky comic voice always keeps the danger of her predicament and the dysfunctionality of her family from weighing down the story, which bounces lightly along to its conclusion--or rather, temporary conclusion, because this is the first volume of a trilogy. I'm no Young Adult, and this is a Young Adult book, but I can hardly wait for Volume 2.

5 out of 5 stars Cliché Free, Fresh Fantasy.......2007-06-03

I purchased this book for my daughter after reading Charles de Lint's favorable review in Fantasy & Science Fiction Magazine (he's rarely steered me wrong) and after growing impatient waiting for her to begin it, I picked it up to skim the first few pages for myself. There was no skimming; I was immediately absorbed and read the book in one sitting. There was no tired "hero's journey" cliché where the orphan, unaware of his great heritage, begins on a lowly farm. There were innovative and captivating devices, smooth wordsmithing, and the kind of intelligent, brave female protagonist I like my daughter to spend time with. Be sure to check out the author's website and blog.

Book Description

"In speaking with many women across the country," explains best-selling author Chris Casson Madden in the introduction to her new book, A Room of Her Own: Women's Personal Spaces, "I have discovered that as much as we revel in the hard-won victories that have given us new freedoms in pursuing careers and in creating loving relationships, many of us long to find the time in a busy schedule to relax and refresh ourselves, body and spirit. I firmly believe that in order to give back to our relationships, careers, families, and passions, we must pull in for short moments to take care of ourselves, then we can return to the people and places of our lives renewed, refreshed, and ready to continue the drama of our days with all the joys, sorrows, pleasures, and stresses that go with it."

Throughout America Chris has found women from all walks of life who have created for themselves a diversity of personal spaces that provide them the quiet and solitude needed to restore their souls each day. These range from Ali MacGraw's studio in northern New Mexico, its incredible mountain views provide the silence and tranquillity she needs, to designer Sherri Donghia's fabric-filled loft in her Long Island country home, where she can stop, think, relax, and be really honest and creative, to television commentator Chantal Westerman's home, where, amid a collection of altars, crosses, and other religious icons, she has created a peaceful and serene sanctuary.

With over 200 beautiful, full-color photographs and an intimate, engaging text, A Room of Her Own: Women's Personal Spaces brings to life the special places that women have created as retreats from their busy everyday routines. Within the seven chapters, Celebrating Color, Sacred Places, Working Sanctuaries, Natural Retreats, Serene Spaces, Evoking Memories, and Garden Rooms, innovative and stylish ideas for creating a room of one's own abound. Ella King Torrey, President of the San Francisco Art Institute, explains in Celebrating Color why she gravitates toward her sitting room in her home in San Francisco. "I just relax and think in this room," Ella explains. "This room really feeds my soul and reminds me of life's wonderful possibilities. Every object in this room is connected to a personal place or experience, and so sitting in this room keeps me whole."

Carol Anthony, Chantal Westerman, Sally Quinn, Sister Mary Joaquin, and Ali MacGraw all share a passion for the spirit within, for altars, rituals, and the silent, reverent spaces that are profiled in Sacred Places. Artist Carol Anthony has a "sanctuario," or shrine. It is a thatched-dome adobe structure surrounded by sage brush and aspen trees where she retreats to rekindle the strength she derives from her beloved New Mexico landscape and finds the muse that is necessary for her career as a highly acclaimed artist.

Ali MacGraw shares a need for a space filled with personal belongings with all of the women featured in A Room of Her Own. "There are lots of photographs of my son, my friends, our animals, mementos from my travels, wildflowers, found rocks and bits from my walks in the arroyo. I think that all of us, men and women, need a tiny spot of total privacy, of stillness, to reconnect with our own souls. I know that the ability to regenerate, to get away a bit, enhances not only my mental health but my ability to work and create and, probably, to navigate the complicated relationships that make up the rest of my life."

An avid spokesperson for the outdoor life and one of the country's most notable mountain climbers, Sandy Hill finds that a rainbow-colored Tibetan tent pitched on the lawn of her Connecticut home fulfills her need for a private space. The tent, featured in Working Sanctuaries, was purchased en route to Mount Everest. It is filled with a myriad of pieces that she values emotionally and spiritually. "Everything in this space is necessary to my well-being," she explains.

Designer Victoria MacKenzie-Childs, who, along with her husband, Richard Childs, employs more than three hundred craftspeople, finds her sanctuary in her office, where she can be alone to catch up on correspondence and work. "But my real personal space," explains MacKenzie-Childs, "is a place in consciousness that cannot be taken from or added to. It is truly heaven on earth."

Martha Baker, the mother of four children, a wife, homemaker, career woman, gardener, sports enthusiast, and entertainer, finds that her bedroom offers her a personal space and realizes that it is "as essential to my life as is oxygen." Explains Baker, "I desperately needed sanctuary. My antique-filled bedroom is a place where I feel safe not to think to wander or to tune out. Its a place where I feel I can pull together my thoughts, have a private phone conversation, or just pause in my day."

In Garden Rooms, Pat Mason, Bunny Williams, Jessica McClintock, Antonia Bellanca-Mahoney and Lynn von Kersting find their solace surrounded with lush flowers, beloved plants, and an abundance of light pouring in through windows.

For Antonia Bellanca-Mahoney, her sanctuary is her pavilion, a twenty-five-square-foot room with creamy white walls and a slate floor, as well as a glass-fronted garage door that allows her to keep an eye on the world. "Men have always understood the need for a personal space, their hunting cabin, fishing boat, favorite car, woodworking shop, their little shack by the pond, or even their reclining chair in the den," muses Antonia. "Women have such constant demands between work and family that time and space to recharge is a must to maintain equilibrium."

Chris Madden sought out the places women create as retreats from the demands around them. "The connective thread, she concludes, for all of these personal spaces, is that each one, in dazzlingly different ways, brings its owner the sense of solitude, of the sanctuary they need in their rich and engaged lives. Amid the diversity, there were some elements that I found repeated often such things as glorious fabric and pillows, baskets and bird nests, stones, altars, photographs, and row upon row of hats, boats, books, and shells. Music, scented candles, and views of nature were important elements in these zones of privacy, and help to form the creation of each of these personal spaces."

5 out of 5 stars A Room of My Own.......2001-01-24

Wonderful book! A friend of mine loaned me her copy, but I had to go out and buy one for myself. Beautiful photography and inside stories about women who were brave enough to carve out their own space and call it that, "Mine!'. Many women I know would love to find the courage to do this, but don't. We all need a little corner to call our very own. I have one now thanks to Ms. Casson Madden. I'm surrounded by items which inspire and motivate me to do, think, and be my best.

5 out of 5 stars Acknowledge your need for a haven!.......2000-12-15

This book is lovely and speaks to women everywhere. When the pressures of life build up and we need to feel safe and warm, there is nothing like a space of our own with all our favorite things and colors in it. This book shares ideas and inspiration, from decorating small spaces and outdoor tents (really),to the positive changes that have come about when women honor themselves with their own haven. Buy this book if you are looking for a "deeper" decorating experience. Oh, just buy this book because it's wonderful!

5 out of 5 stars I 'escaped with this book and loved it!.......2000-09-13

Not what a 'typical' decorating book is but it was a wonderful book. If you are looking for a decorating book, it will give you ideas, but it is much more than that. This book is a look into other womens lives and personal spaces. It gives you ideas for your own personal space by showing you what some have done. Creativity is in all of us. The ideas and examples given in this book are fantastic. Your creativity will flow after reading this book and looking at all of the beautiful pictures.

Book Description

The Amber Room is one of the greatest treasures ever made by man: an entire room forged of exquisite amber, from its four massive walls to its finely crafted furniture. But it is also the subject of one of history’s most intriguing mysteries. Originally commissioned in 1701 by Frederick I of Prussia, the Room was later perfected Tsarskoe Selo, the Russian imperial city. In 1941, German troops invaded the Soviet Union, looting everything in their wake and seizing the Amber Room. When the Allies began the bombing of Germany in August 1944, the Room was hidden. And despite the best efforts of treasure hunters and art collectors from around the world, it has never been seen again.

Now, two powerful men have set their best operatives loose in pursuit, and the hunt has begun once more. . . .

Life is good for Atlanta judge Rachel Cutler. She loves her job, loves her kids, and remains civil to her ex-husband, Paul. But everything changes when her father, a man who survived the horrors of World War II, dies under strange circumstances—and leaves behind clues to a secret he kept his entire life . . . a secret about something called the Amber Room.

Desperate to know the truth about her father’s suspicious dealings, Rachel takes off for Germany, with Paul close behind. Shortly after arriving, they find themselves involved with a cast of shadowy characters who all claim to share their quest. But as they learn more about the history of the treasure they seek, Rachel and Paul realize they’re in way over their heads. Locked in a treacherous game with ruthless professional killers and embroiled in a treasure hunt of epic proportions, Rachel and Paul suddenly find themselves on a collision course with the forces of power, evil, and history itself.

A brilliant adventure and a scintillating tale of intrigue, deception, art, and murder, The Amber Room is a classic tale of suspense—and the debut of a strong new voice in the world of the international thriller.

5 out of 5 stars HIGHLY ENTERTAINING THRILLER..........2007-09-09

In this, his debut novel, the author delivers a highly entertaining thriller that will keep the reader compulsively turning the pages. As with all of his books, history plays an important role in the theme of the book. This one focuses a lost treasure known as the "Amber Room".

I myself had no idea what the Amber Room was until I read this book. In 1716, the King of Prussia made a gift of the Amber Room to the then Tsar of Russia, Peter the Great. Apparently, they were panels of amber that were used to wall an entire room. Peter the Great kept the amber panels in storage, until about 1746, when his daughter, the Empress Elizabeth, decided to use the panels to wall a study in the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg. In 1755, Elizabeth moved the Amber Room from the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg to what would later be known as the Catherine Palace, where the amber panels were installed. The Amber Room was embellished with semi-precious stones and perfected, a masterpiece of Baroque artistry.

It was there, at Catherine Palace, that the Amber Room remained until 1941, when the Nazis invaded Russia and reclaimed the Amber Room as theirs. The Nazi's had a proclivity for acquiring great works of art from those whom they conquered. At Hitler's express direction, the Amber Room was dismantled, panel by panel, and twenty tons of the precious amber panels were shipped to Germany by truck and rail. The amber panels were eventually installed in Konigsberg Castle, where they remained until early 1945. After Allied bombardment and the march of the Soviet army upon Konigsberg, the amber panels were once again removed, crated, and put on a truck convoy, where they were to have been taken to safety. To this day, its fate remains unknown, as the amber panels were never again seen.

It is around this intriguing real life mystery that the author builds his story. Atlanta judge, Rachel Cutler, and her ex-husband, Paul, get swept away by international intrigue, when Karol Borya, her eighty three year old father dies unexpectedly, leaving behind some intriguing information about the Amber Room. Rachel decides to pick up the trail her father left and head off to Germany, unaware that her movements are being tracked by two competing, ruthless individuals, Suzanne Danzer and Christian Knoll, who are also looking to solve the mystery of the Amber Room. They each hold the position of Aquisitor, a person who works for an individual member of a consortium of nine wealthy individuals known as the Retrievers of Lost Antiquities. The Acquisitor is the one who recovers stolen art treasures on behalf of a member of this consortium for that individual's private collection. They will stop at nothing to get that which they seek. Paul, sensing something is not quite right, joins Rachel in Germany. A dangerous cat and mouse game ensues, as they try to make sense of the hand that fate has dealt them.

There are many twists and turns in this action packed thriller, and a lot of historical information is woven into the fabric of this intricately plotted novel. I was hooked once I read the gripping prologue that sets the tone for the book. I found that I simply could not stop turning the pages of this engrossing thriller. This is a plot driven book, so while it may fall a little short in the area of character development, it does not for one moment diminish the enjoyment that the reader will get from reading this immensely interesting work of fiction. It is simply an amazing debut novel. Those who enjoyed "The Da VInci Code" will, undoubtedly, enjoy this book, as well.

4 out of 5 stars History, bad guys and secrets.......2007-07-26

The Amber Room is a chase novel through Europe in search of a treasure that has been unseen for many a year. The main character in this novel is a woman named Rachel Cutler. She is an Atlanta Judge who finds herself involved in this mysterious race to find the secrets of the treasure.
There are other subplots of the book concerning her ex-husband, her dead father and really bad men who are hot on her tail.

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre thriller.......2007-07-15

This Cross continental thriller pits two professional killers against one another as two prominent art collectors are in search of the Amber Room. It also manages to bring together a couple of divorcees.

The characters are interestingenough, but the story is rather bland and lacks intrigue. Many questions surround what happened to the Amber Room, but I really struggled to find reasons to care about what the true answer is.

4 out of 5 stars The Amber Room.......2007-06-05

Having been to St. Petersburg and Catherine Palace recently, it was a very interesting read. The speculation over what happened to the Amber panels made for a suspenseful story.

Book Description

Visiting Italy with her prim and proper cousin Charlotte as a chaperone, Lucy Honeychurch meets the unconventional lower-class Mr. Emerson and his son, George. Upon her return to England she becomes engaged to the supercilious Cecil Vyse, but finds herself increasingly torn between the expectations of the world in which she moves and the passionate yearnings of her heart. As Forster writes, "You can transmute love, ignore it, muddle it, but you can never pull it out of you." More than a love story, A Room With a View is a perceptive examination of class structure and a penetrating social comedy.

4 out of 5 stars Love vs. Books.......2007-03-29

This is the first E.M. Forester book I've read and it affected me greatly. When I write 'reviews', I don't mean to give a traditional book review, but to note how the book affected my real life.

This is how: One of the characters, Cecil, is a bit of a snob and looks down on the common homey interests of his betrothed's family. He is good with books, art, ideas and 'things', but when he interacts with real people, his personality 'kills' any chance of having an intimate relationship and thus, his life is one of ideas rather than people.

How fiction unwraps itself and reveals itself to be true! This was looking into a mirror for me. What my friends won't tell me, a good novel will! Doing well with "books, ideas and things" is not the epicenter of living, says Forester, but the nitty gritty give and take of affectionate living is where life's eruption takes place. Art and ideas and books, although glorious, arise from this center, not vice versa. First comes the flesh, then the idea.

Thus this 'old' book, written over 100 years ago, performs the magic of all good literature: it makes me act and think differently. I now, attempt to(!), treat the person who stands before me, not as an idea, but as another real, carbon-based life form!

"A Room With A View" tells the often told story of a young person learning to stand in her own place rather than where society demands she stand, yet Forester's characters are so complete that this old story is like a skeleton that is dressed up in finery and begins to walk! I fell in love with the characters and recognized myself in all of them; yes, even in the old biddy Charlotte, who, as it turns out, wasn't so old fashioned and possibly was the master puppeteer.

5 out of 5 stars A must-read --- captivating!.......2007-01-28

"A Room with a View" is a novel that is thoroughly enjoyable from the first page to the last. It's a heart-warming love story, and this aspect of it completely charmed me. It's also very funny in some places. It's not overlong, either, so it doesn't drag, and it's a very easy read. I simply fell in love with "A Room with a View", and it has to be one of my favorite books I've ever read. I'd recommend it to anybody.

5 out of 5 stars Quaint Review of a 20th Century "Muddle" [39][79].......2007-01-02

This book, written in 1908, is enwrapped with the then-stereotypical clash of the British castes. In this book, a young British Brahman woman, Lucy Honeychurch, must decide whether to marry wealthy Cecil Vyse or follow her heart after the young and buff, but socially crass (to them but not to us 21st century Americans), George Emerson.

Cecil dislikes most everyone, because they are not as gifted or talented as he. And, George - as well as his father Mr. Emerson - ignore the innuendo and scofflaw-like attitudes thrown in their direction by Cecil and people with whom he associates. In fact, when discovering Lucy's engagement to Cecil, George flatly (and out of character) responds, "You cannot live with Vyse. . . He should know no one intimately, least of all a woman." This sentence is so out of context with his character's dialogue throughout the remainder of the book. But, perhaps more true to the character, it describes his emotions about Lucy and his main competitor for her heart.

Lucy is torn between two lovers. She is in what Mr. Emerson describes to be in a "muddle." Much of the muddle has been exaggerated by her meddling spinster cousin, Charlotte, and Charlotte's poor choice of a friend, Eleanor Lavish. But, to her credit, she thinks the situation through, and makes a decision which she enjoys, but which most around her do not understand.

Forster's dialogue reminds me greatly of Evelyn Waugh, Virginia Woolf, or either Austen. The prim respectability often reads constrained when emotions of anger or hatred are expressed. But, the richness of the dialogue and depth of insight for the main characters are masterfully done. That is why this novel still is read today and will be for years.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful.......2006-11-21

One of my absolute favorite books. I discover something new every time I read it. Beautiful settings, lovely characters, an interesting style, and at least a few hearty laughs for everyone.

4 out of 5 stars Classic love story.......2006-11-07

A Room With A View is a novel not only about the journey to find true love, but also about the difficult decisions one is faced with when one must decide to either listen to the expectations of others, or their own heart. In this novel the main character, Lucy takes a trip to Italy with her cousin, and upon her arrival meets the Emerson's. Lucy belonging to the upper class of society thinks she could never have an attraction to someone of the lower class, like the Emerson's. Love was something Lucy was hoping to find in Italy, but as soon as she arrived back to her home in England she promptly became engaged to Cecil, a man of the same social class as her. Lucy soon realizes that she is not truly in love with Cecil, and discovers that she is in love with George Emerson. Everyone Lucy knows expects her to marry someone wealthy and proper, like Cecil, but instead of listening to what others expect of her, Lucy listens to her heart, and allows herself to be in love with George. Throughout Lucy's journey to find true love Forster conveys the message that others expectations cannot guide one to the path of love, only one's heart can. I recommend this book to anyone who struggles when faced with making the decision of following others expectations, or following their heart. This novel will teach its readers that what one truly desires is the only escape to genuine happiness.

Book Description

Denver detective Jake McCoy was rehabbing at her cabin in the mountains, trying to reconcile the shooting death of a young boy. Psychologist Nicole Westbrook, an expert in domestic violence, is in those very same mountains, escaping from the horrors of her profession for a brief vacation. Nicole becomes lost when she leaves the well-marked hiking trail in search of hot springs, and she stumbles upon Jake, who is enjoying her own soak in remote springs. They exchange first names only, but after a few hours together, a physical attraction neither can explain, engulfs them, leaving them as lovers, not strangers, when Nicole departs the following day. But when Jake returns to Denver, a murder investigation leads her to Nicole. Both are surprised that they are face to face with the stranger they thought they'd never see again, Nicole tries to remain in the professional closet that she's been hiding in for so long, a place where out cop Jake McCoy does not fit. And Jake, still trying to recover from the shooting that left her injured, does her best to distance herself from Nicole. It is soon evident that a serial killer is targeting Nicole's former patients. Try as they may, they can not deny the physical attraction between them, even if it means compromising the investigation. But after all is said and done, the fact remains that Nicole and Jake live in two different worlds. Despite the physical attraction and the gentle tug of love, both women accept that when their case is over, they will go their separate ways. Jake retreats back to the mountains, and Nicole resumes her practice in earnest, both trying to forget the other . . . and both failing.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Exciting, intense, beautiful & frustrating.......2007-09-23

This is probably my favorite Gerri Hill novel to date. She really takes her time to establish character and setting, and later wrap up the plot. I read the Target before this novel, so astute review-readers will know that I already enjoyed the descriptions of the countryside and mountains around Colorado. In addition, I like the peace that the characters in this novel were able to gain by jouneying into the wilderness. It was nice that the vivid natural descriptions weren't just in the novel for their own sakes either, but that as we experience the wonder with the characters, we also learn about what makes them tick.

It was fun to have the characters meet early in the novel when both are outside of their normal lives and comfort zone. That really kept the reader in suspense for the point when they would run into one another again.

The set-up of both their lives was interesting. I was touched by Jake's relationship with her dog, though to be a true secondary character perhaps Cheyenne's actions and reactions should have been explored in more depth. The way in which Nicole had constructed her own life, isolated despite a powerful circle of lesbian "friends" was also an interesting twist on the forces pulling her away from Jake, even as she was drawn to her.

The ending of the mystery wasn't completely unexpected, but was twisty and solid enough to satisfy. Since the mystery in these books is basically an accompaniment versus the main performance, I have no trouble accepting it for what it is, and being entertained by it. I could have strangled the characters themselves for their constant dithering, not so much throughout the book, but in particular at the end, and if there's one consistent criticism I'd have for Gerri Hill's books it's that her characters seem to take that indecisiveness just over the line for me. But perhaps this isn't unrealistic; I guess it's just a balancing act on how flawed versus how ideal we want our heroes to be.

I struggled about whether to give this 3 or 4 stars. It seems to be a pattern that I can't make a decision myself on placing these books in a solid category (constantly whining about 1/2 stars), but while above the average 3 star book, I don't know if this actually is one of my favorites. Definitely 3-1/2. The more I think about it, the more I really like many aspects of it. Time will tell if it becomes a 4 in my mind.

5 out of 5 stars The Killing Room.......2007-09-10

I read this book over the weekend and was pleasantly surprised. Most lesbian fiction books tend to be very formulaic, but this one was not. I found the characters very believable and realistic, as well as most of the story. The hot springs sex scene is a bit out there (as far as plausibility is concerned), but is still well written. It also was not overly sappy-- there's romance, but not the kind that makes you say "oh, please" with every sentence. Hill is actually a very good writer and I intend to buy all of her books now.

5 out of 5 stars Mystery With Touching Moments.......2007-05-21

This mystery novel has a great cast of characters who are very true to life. You'll be touched as you watch these women open their hearts to each other.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Characters / Excellent Mystery!.......2007-05-07

I am new to this author's works. Having read "The Target" first, I may not have approached this journey with her finest work.

But after reading the first 90 pages of "The Killing Room," I had to put my Saturday afternoon plans on hold just so I could finish reading this book.

Although I felt there were a number of mundane chapters early on, the rest of the book well made up for it. Excellent mystery, and excellent character development. Most enjoyable read.

4 out of 5 stars High Interest/great characters.......2007-01-10

This was a really great novel. The characters were very believable and alive throughout the story. I read it quickly not missing a single detail. It's great to read something the reflects some real women. there is an intensity in the passions shared that is very real when women open their hearts to one another. Good writing!

Book Description

They are detection’s oddest couple: two cranky detectives whose professional partnership dates back half a century. Now Arthur Bryant and John May return in a case of multiple murder that twists through a subterranean course of the secrets, lies, and extreme passions that drive even ordinary men and women to the most shocking crimes….

They are living legends with a reputation for solving even the trickiest cases using unorthodox, unconventional, and often completely unauthorized methods. But the Peculiar Crimes Unit headed by Detectives John May and Arthur Bryant is one mistake away from being shut down for good. And when the elderly sister of Bryant’s friend is found dead in the basement of her decrepit house in Kentish Town, they find themselves on the verge of making exactly that mistake.

According to the coroner, Ruth Singh’s heart simply stopped beating. But why was a woman who rarely left the house fully dressed for an outing? And why was there river water in her throat? Convinced that the old lady didn’t die a natural death, the detectives delve into a murky case with no apparent motive, no forensics, and no clues. And they’ve barely launched their investigation when death claims another victim. Suddenly they discover some very unnatural behavior surrounding Ruth Singh’s death by “natural” causes—from shady real estate developers and racist threats to two troubled marriages, from a dodgy academician working London’s notorious “grey economy” to a network of antiquities collectors obsessed with Egyptian mythology. And running beneath it all are the sweeping tentacles of London’s vast and forgotten underground river system. As the rains pour down and the water rises, Bryant and May must rely on instinct, experience, and their own very peculiar methods to stem a tide of evil that threatens to drown them all.

Brayant and May - the main characters of this novel - are detectives of London's Pecular Crimes Unit. London's PCU takes to investigation only very complicated, very odd and sensitive cases which other police departments failed to solve. And the case of The Water Room was supposed to be one of such mysteries.
The begining of the novel really promisses a lot. An old woman dies strange way, forgotten underground river system, people of Balaklava street, each of them has a story and may be something to hide. All this tickles reader's senses promissing a good detective story.
But somehow as the novel progresses you realize that the author actually failed to develope his own brilliant idea. Sometimes the story drifts to history and mythology a little to much. There are a lot of elder characters in the book. This could be a bit excentric if there would be not so MANY of them.
In the key points you'd expect more emotions or more drama. Unfortunately, the Water Room fails here as well. I had a strong impression, that author knows how to write about London's history, but has no idea how to deal with action.
Although, this is not the best detective story I ever read, I have to say The Water Room can be quite entertaining sometimes and overall is a very decent work.

3 out of 5 stars A very exoteric read.......2007-08-27

Fowler's second novel appeals too a wide and varied audience it is not esoteric, rather, exoteric. It's an easy read with sharp, undulating plot twists, and the foolery of the geriatric detectives Bryant and May. My, what capers they get involved in, from Crippin the feisty feline, to Tate the misunderstood, affable tramp, the book runs the gamut. Aside from the esotericism of Londons lost waterways, the book engrosses and amazes the reader by making the common occurence seem so illustrative. My hat is off to Fowler along with the totality of my current garb, so to speak. The only problem with the book, and this only pertains to an esoteric audience, is the overuse of the word esoteric.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating Offbeat Mystery.......2006-05-17

If you like an offbeat, thought-provoking story, I highly recommend this mystery by Christopher Fowler. Bryant and May, the odd-couple detectives of London's peculiar crimes unit are at it again. This time they must solve the mystery of the dry woman drowned in her basement. It leads them through lost rivers, Roman mythology, paganism, and, of course, the history of London and its class struggles.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely wonderful!.......2005-09-18

The first of this series, "Full Dark House," was very good and this was even better. My only two regrets are that (1) the characters are of an age where you wonder how long they can be around and (2) I wish there were more books already there for me to read. But I know the next book is due out soon, so I'll take heart. The relationship and dialogue between the two detectives is priceless, and there are great supporting characters. The writing is wonderful-it's funny, suspenseful and educational, and, as with fine wine, should be savored but thoroughly enjoyed. Very highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Filled with wisdom and encouragement.......2006-09-30

Can't put down the book. Every part is so wonderful. A lot of wisdom at the same time. Need time to chew it down.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely Books.......2003-07-02

I love Karla's style of writing - the color and emphasis of detail in her books. I've recently purchased some of her personal checks and have gotten many compliments from them.

5 out of 5 stars soothing for the soul.......2003-01-30

I first picked up this book at a friends house. Our family stayed the night and forgot to pack books to read to our children. The hostess left this treasure on the night stand and I couldn't put it down. It is so beautifully worded and illustrated. I had to order it as soon as we got back. It seems as though many have forgotten that when we get back to the basics, life is much more simple. I found this book to be charming in every way.

5 out of 5 stars A Treat in Every Book.......2000-12-19

I first saw these books (Love in Every Room, Down a Garden Path, and The Blessing of Friendship)in our church's bookstore several weeks ago. Every time I turned the pages it was like watching Anne of Green Gables or seeing pictures of Tasha Tudor's homestead--a treat for the eyes and the soul. The Scripture and symbolism contained within the pages creates, with the pictures and cute handwriting, some very beautiful and inspiring books.

For a birthday gift or even a Christmas gift--for ANY woman, young or old, single, married, whatever--Karla's books are a blessing. I'm a young single woman who just received the three books mentioned above as a Christmas gift. Talk about a surprise blessing!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and inspiring!.......2000-03-25

I was just introduced to Karla's books this weekend and I'm hooked! The message she protrays is so needed in our day and age...she encourages us to focus on Jesus. Her illustrations are so beautiful, they take me away for the while I'm reading the book. The ideas that she uses, such as leaving room for the reader to pen her thoughts, the envelopes for notes to the reader, and the personal welcome from Karla, all make for a wonderful, uplifting experience! She is truly God inspired! Keep up the good work, Karla!
