Book Description

A woman compelled. . .

In the glittering world of Regency England, Anne Wilder played a dangerous game.  A widowed lady by day, by night she became a masked thief preying on society's elite.  She roved high above London's black rooftops, compelled by phantoms from her past to take ever greater risks.  Until her restless spirit led her into Colonel Jack Seward's trap. . . where seduction was her only way out.

A man obsessed. . .

She'd played him for a fool, taking advantage of his hungry response to escape from his clutches.  But as Jack hunted for his thief, his heart fell captive to a self-possessed widow.  Torn between illicit passion and tender love, Jack is duty-bound to capture the audacious criminal, even if it means ripping society apart to do so.  Now he stalked her through the ton, never realizing the lovely widow who captured his heart was the same woman who roused his most violent passions.

A love that defied king and country. . .

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely loved it........2007-03-27

Hard to believe this novel is already 10 years old. Seeing how so many romances are trivial and frivolous it was a pleasure to read a story that takes itself seriously. The gorgeous blonde hero, Seward, is a wonderful creation. From his back story to his current situation as a spy with 2 masters he has lived dangerously for many years. And Ann is just the right woman for him. My one objection is that the skank ward who does absolutely nothing in the plot actually has a better HEA than the main couple. This is the danger when including so many peripheral characters in a story. Other than that the author completely transcended the limitations of the genre says I.

3 out of 5 stars Should be 2 1/2 but I'll Give It the Benefit of the Doubt.......2006-09-25

I really need to split the baby here but Amazon won't let me. Half of this book is good ole romantic drama with a dark hero and really hot sex. I liked that half. The other half was a story that made me want to wack the author in the head with a copy of "English Philantrophy from the Tudor Years to the End of Victorian Era."

I cannot figure out how someone who can do such a good job in making me suspend my disbelief when faced with a truly improbable relationship is incapable of believable Regency world building. Getting down to brass tacks, the heroine in this book has created a philanthropic organization to provide help to disabled Napoleonic War Sailors. Only it is structured like a 20th century boys club. Sailors just go there to hang out. This is soooo wrong.

Having actually read the aforementioned "English Philanthropy, etc" I can assure you that a charity would have been more like an urban homeless shelter crossed with a sheltered workshop. It would provide a place to sleep, maybe clothes, some food, religious solace and some type of useful work and/or possibly low level education. Loiters would not be permitted. Idle hands are the tools of the devil and all that.

Also, did anyone else grind their teeth when it came to explaining how the heroine had developed her skills? I kept coming up with objection after objection as to why it would not work.

And the reasoning behind the thievery-- couldn't just have someone who steals because she wants money or enjoys the adrenalin rush, although it is clear that the thief does enjoy that surge of adrenalin. Oh, no, there has to be a noble reason for stealing. OK, I don't really blame the author for this one. I'm sure that heart attacks would be had all around in romance circles if a historical romance heroine did something for a selfish reason.

The author has stated elsewhere that she is taking a hiatus from historical romance because of the limitations of the genre. I would be very pleased to see what she manages to do in a contemporary setting.

2 out of 5 stars I liked "As You Desire" MUCH more!.......2006-09-11

I highly recommend "As You Desire" over this one. All Through the Night is VERY angsty and some of the heroines inner revelations come a little too much too late for my taste instead of seeing her change throughout the story. *shrug* that's just my 2 cents though.

4 out of 5 stars a great romance, but I didn't love it.......2006-04-29

This book never really sucked me in and I'm not sure why. Seward was a really compelling hero; he was so in love, and so ashamed of his feelings...incredibly strong but still oddly bashful. He's gorgeous, but his voice is raspy because he was hung (on a noose) for two minutes, and he has a crippled hand. Very stiff, bottled up, proper, yet really believably ruthless and passionate.

I liked Anne quite a bit as well but I expect that she's the one I had the problem with. I just didn't buy her as a thief. Her thief-personality was too different from her everyday personality. And her reasons for stealing weren't compelling enough for me. She is independently quite wealthy, so her nighttime escapades have a Robin Hood aspect.

The plot is pretty good; relatively simple, but well-done, and it makes sense.

4 out of 5 stars This One Had It All And Then Some..........2006-03-07

This is the first book by Connie Brockway that I have read. I am always searching for new authors to add to my collection of favorites. I really enjoyed this new author and book I found. It had an interesting plot line, not your usual main characters, lots of passion and desire and a bit of adventure to boot.

I liked that the heroine, Anne Wilder, was not your typical high ranking English miss with a title or wealthy family. She came from an average home and family with little means but, lots of heart (and quite the crafty father too). She fortunately had intelligence, wit, charm, beauty and a bit of mystery that other woman seemed to lack. So, Anne's fortune was herself, not what her family legacy brought to the table. I liked that Anne did not become a boring simpering miss after her husband died and her family was gone. Instead, she had a strong heart and sense of rightness and focused her life on helping those her husband had hurt during his poor captaining of a ship and assisting a house for those left blind, lame, ill or worse from her husband's mistakes. Those in the ton who did not come through with financial gifts as they said they would, became the victim of Anne's midnight thievery. She was a bit of a female Robin Hood if you will. She stole from the rich and gave to the poor (but, only when the rich recanted gifts they promised). Anne had a dangerous streak which was appealing for a woman and enjoyed her dual roles as lady in waiting during the day and then midnight thief of the ton at night.

Our hero Colonel Jack was equally interesting as the main leading man. He had a background in the gutters and workhouses of England and survived by his wit and brains. He took opportunities as they arose as he knew to deny them would mean death. Thus, Jack met his "father" by chance as a child and he benefited during his adult life from this man who took him in but, it was at great cost to Jack. He learned to be tough, emotionless, cold, and distant on all of his spying and networking campaigns as payment for being selected to live by this man. Life on the streets and then being raised by a devious and evil man made Jack into who he was in later life - dark, mysterious, a bit haunted and out of reach to most men and women. Jack could have been an awful hero from his past but, beneath his rock hard exterior there lurked still some gentleness, some tenderness and some possibility for love. These things might still be discovered with the help of the right woman - or women (lady in waiting/thief) in this book. He was solid and you as the reader never gave up on him.

Complete love scenes in this story were limited but, appealing when they did show up. Most of the book was a lot of sexual teasing and temptation and anticipation and that's not a bad thing - such as watching each other, dreaming of each other, kissing, touching, tormenting each other, etc. Sometimes it was Jack being stretched on the rack of desire, other times Anne and then sometimes both of them. Their coming together did not occur until late in the story and that worked just fine. All their attraction and dangerous situations provided intensity and emotion and that filled in for any missing coupling. I actually enjoy immensely books like this that show that attraction between two people is more than the final act. Instead, the desire that builds beforehand can be earth shattering in itself. This author took that to heart and it worked well in this book. It was sexy and hot and very interesting.

Many of the secondary characters in this book were appealing, even if they weren't the "good guys" - such as Jack's father "Jamison", Jack's valet Griffin, Jack's fellow spy Strand (who you were never sure until the end if he was enemy or foe), Lady Dibbs, Sophia and others on Anne's side. These characters added depth and interest to an already interesting story. I almost wish for a story on Strand as he was very intriguing for a secondary character and he seemed to deserve his own story and not end up with Sophia - she seemed wrong for him.

If you have not selected this author yet, I recommend you do. She is very talented with the pen and wove a wonderful story with memorable characters. I almost wished the book was longer so, that you could see what happens as the two finally made real lives for themselves in a new place to avoid old enemies and evil. It would have been interesting to see Jack have a normal life finally, Anne to be his partner and secure in his love and any children they might have one day. At least they had the decency to bring the cat at the end (I'm a cat lover and didn't want her left behind!).

No matter what, this was a great read. Pick it up, read it and definitely enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Stories.......2007-09-06

This was another awesome story by Lori Foster! It definately keeps you up "All Through The Night" reading it. All the stories in it are hot, steamy and sexy!

2 out of 5 stars Only one good story out of the four.......2007-05-24

I guess I don't agree with all the other readers on this one.
Stranger in her bed - the story is not only weird, but not believable. She's a computer whiz, but can't figure out she's talking to a real person on-line or seeing one in person.
No mercy - love lost and love found. Nothing new, but sensual scenes.
Satisfy me - a fantasy fulfilled story that will keep you smiling.
Something wild - a woman literally running away from her abusive boyfriend meets a man that ends up taking control of her to the point of rape (or should we call it ravaging)and ordering her around. Of course kissing the bruises he put on her body is supposed to be - what - an apology? Two unhealthy people find each other, not very romantic but they call it love.

5 out of 5 stars Two stories great, worth buying.......2007-03-26

My two favorite stories were by Lori Foster and Shannon McKenna, both worth 5 stars. No Mercy by Thea Devine I give 4 stars. It was a fun read, but a little light on character development and plot. Stranger In Her Bed by Suzanne Forster I give 3 stars. It was odd and confusing but ok. Sexual language: strong/erotic.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-02-20

I purchased the book because I love Shannon Mckenna books. I read one and was hooked. But now I love Lori FOster books also because of this book. All the stories are good no doubt. Very steamy and worth the purchase! A+

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Stories.......2004-07-12

It seems this book might be the precursor to the "Bad Boys" series and it's definitely worth a read.

"Stranger in Her Bed" is about an agoraphobic software desinger who wakes up one night to discover her digital fantasy man is in her house. It's erotic and wildly imaginative, but the writing style gave me a headache. It's hard to know what's going on, but maybe that's because the story is told from Kerry's viewpoint, and she's mildly psychotic.

"No Mercy" is yet another story about a man and woman who once were madly in love but then it fell through, and yet they give it one more shot. Who'd be dumb enough to do that in real life? The characters are weak and unbelievable and the steaminess factor is a no show. Sad, because Thea Devine is normally a great author.

"Satisy Me" is the first in a series of three short stores, the next two plaid out in the "Bad Boys" series. It's a brilliant idea, great writing, and it toally draws you in. It's slightly absurd though how virginal the heroine is, but that's half of Ms. Foster's trademark. A worthy read.

"Something Wild" is dark and unelievably erotic. Annie is fleeing a bad knock from life in a crummy car and borrowed time. On the road to Lousinanna she meets dark and sexy Jacob, a biker dude extraordinaire. Wow, did this story have possibilities. And I was glued to the plot, couldn't put it down. It gets weird, the lne between "ravish" and "rape" seems dangerously thin at points and the heroine seems really childish. but it keeps Annie fleshed out and I've gone back to read this story time after time.

It's totally worth checking out, the stories are all fairly dark and erotic and overall good.

Fans of Mary Higgins Clark and cozy mysteries will relish this Christmas confection. Unlike her previous holiday novel, Silent Night, All Through the Night is virtually free of life-and-death crime. Rather, it is a Dickensian tale of good deeds rewarded and crimes punished.

The wintry story begins on the Upper West Side of Manhattan with 18-year-old Sondra Lewis, an aspiring violinist, tearfully leaving her baby on the steps of St. Clement's Church. Unbeknownst to her, Lenny Centino is robbing that same church on the same night, with his attention particularly on the Church's diamond inlaid chalice. He finds a buggy outside the church and uses it for cover as he flees. Only later does he realize that his take for the night includes the infant Stellina (Italian for star). The narrative then abruptly moves ahead seven years. Clark's lottery-winning protagonists, Alvirah and her husband Willy (introduced in Weep No More, My Lady) return for some amateur sleuthing. Sister Cordelia's thrift shop doubles as an after-school recreation place for neighborhood children (including a shy little girl named Star), but the building has been condemned. Bessie Maher had vowed she was leaving the house to the nun and her children. Now that she is gone, the will indicates that the tenants of the house, Vic and Linda Baker, are the true heirs. As December rushes on towards Christmas, Alvirah struggles to put things right before the children are left in the cold.

Like the best holiday stories, All Through the Night steers toward sentimentality, but it veers back on course with narrative wit and Alvirah's charm. Clark's prose is lean and her plotting is brisk. This is a mystery that would be a pleasure to share aloud with a family gathered at the fireplace for some holiday cheer. --Patrick O'Kelley

Mary Higgins Clark, the Queen of Suspense, celebrates the season with this Christmas classic featuring two of her most beloved characters.

    ALL THROUGH THE NIGHT

All of Alvirah's deductive powers and Willy's world-class common sense are called upon as the two stumble into a Christmas mystery. A woman abandons her newborn at a Manhattan church. Simultaneously, a thief is absconding with a treasured artifact, a chalice adorned with a star-shaped diamond. To elude police, he grabs the stroller and disappears. Seven years later, the mother returns to the scene and finds Alvirah and Willy helping neighborhood kids prepare for a Christmas pageant at an after-school shelter. Soon the savvy sleuths set out to solve the puzzle of the missing child and chalice -- and to unmask scam artists threatening to shut down the shelter.

    Download Description

A desperate mother. Her missing child. A stolen chalice. With Silent Night, Mary Higgins Clark, America's own Queen of Suspense, gave her readers their best Christmas present ever. Now, with All Through the Night, she once again celebrates the Christmas season with a tale of suspense that will keep readers turning the pages -- all through the night. At the center of the novel are two of Mary Higgins Clark's most beloved characters, Alvirah, the lottery winner turned amateur sleuth, and her husband, Willy, both of them caught up in a Christmas mystery that calls on all of Alvirah's deductive powers, as well as Willy's world-class common sense. The story begins when a young unmarried woman leaves her newborn child on the rectory doorstep at a church on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. At the same moment, inside the church, a young man is stealing a treasured artifact, a chalice adorned with a single star-shaped diamond. Both the infant and the chalice disappear. Seven years later, a few weeks before Christmas, Alvirah and Willy are busy helping Willy's sister Cordelia, a nun who runs a thrift shop that doubles as an after-school shelter for neighborhood kids, prepare for the upcoming Christmas pageant. The future of the shelter is threatened, however, when the city condemns the building for that use, and it is further jeopardized when a nearby brownstone to which the shelter was to be moved turns out to have been willed to a young couple who were tenants in the building. Alvirah refuses to believe that the will is genuine and sets out to prove that the couple are con artists. Soon she is involved in the mystery of the chalice and the child. In All Through the Night, Mary Higgins Clark has fashioned a Christmas gift for all her readers.

4 out of 5 stars All Through The Night.......2007-02-23

~Sondra has always wondered about her baby that she left on the steps of the church that her grandfather went to when he lived in New York and prayed in when things we not going the way that he hoped one week before Christmas. She was a college student at the time and couldn't raise a baby and go to school on the scholarship that she got for playing the violin. Sondra had always wanted to play at the Carnegie Hall in front of an audience ever since her grandfather started tutoring her to master the violin like he had many years before, and seven years later after leaving her child on the steps of a church, she has come back to play on that very stage and hopefully find her daughter. But when she called the church to look for adoptions, or any kind of sign that her child was brought into a nice family those seven long years ago, she was disheartened to find that never such a claim was made. When she tried to go ask the Monsignor she got half way there and got scared and turned around to go back to her hotel. Then the Monsignor tells his detective friend about this woman and she meets her and then she soon finds out that the child that Sondra left on the steps of the church was taken by the man who stole the chalice that same night. I liked and disliked this book. It was very confusing at parts and it did make any sense until you finished the book.
~I liked this book because it has a very cleaver ways of pulling everything together that happened in the book. An example is when the detective is looking for the little girl and knows who she is but doesn't know that she is Sondra's baby.
~I liked this book because it was very suspenseful. An example is when the detective is tracking Sondra's every step seven years ago.
~I disliked this book because it changed perspectives and you didn't really know who was talking or who was thinking. This happens when a chapter ends and another one begins.
~I think that the author did a good job about writing this book but some parts where confusing about what the people were talking about because it changed perspectives, after you remembered how those people talked and sounded like it was easy to understand. I really liked the plot that the author used; it had many twist and turns.

    1 out of 5 stars Simply Lousy.......2005-05-02

The plot is asinine, the characters unrealistic and how anybody could actually enjoy this book is a mystery to me.

5 out of 5 stars A Christmas Story as Good as Silent Night.......2004-02-19

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Alvirah and Willy make a great team, and since I am Catholic, I enjoy anything when somebody is trying to help the Catholic church. I was so angry when the theft was committed! No one should steal anything sacred from a church!
This book is best read at Christmas time. I know that next Christmas, I am very likely to read them again!

1 out of 5 stars Queen of Suspense????.......2003-11-02

I'm sure that Mary Higgins Clark no longer needs the money, but she could at least give her fans an unpredictable novel that doesn't insult our intelligence. I suspected how this book would end from page 1, but read the whole thing anyway in hopes that I might be surprised in some way. Not only was I disappointed, but I came away angry at the oversimplified plot, at the Meehans for being the most annoying crime solving couple in literary history, and at the idea that a woman who abandons her baby outdoors in the dead of winter has a right to come back and lay claim to that child seven years later. I expected better from this author and it'll be a long time before I read anything by her again.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not great..........2003-08-30

This book is a quick-read, you can go from one end to the other on a nice cold afternoon. The story has good connections between different characters, their is always a little suspense when you turn the pages but although it is quite good, I would suggest another Mary higgins Clark book.

      3 out of 5 stars Groan!!!.......2005-08-17

I know the basic premise of this book was good, that God can take all things difficult and painful and work them together for good BUT the first two hundred pages of the book were of spoiled, obnoxious relatives, it was very tedious to read it over and over as Dale perfectly submitted to the trial. I guess it is definitely a matter of taste because I loved the Gold Shoe, while some disliked it for the obnoxious relative that came to stay, I found that book delightful and skillfully woven with the Mother's growth as she sought the Lord in it. This book is like a long drawn out dose of castor oil!!

I've read this book time and time again, and every time, I like it more. The main character is a girl by the name of Dale whose grandmother has just died. Right in the middle of her grief, several of her relatives arrive. Rather than caring about her, these rude, obnoxious and unfeeling people have no reason for being there except to get money that was supposedly left to them. At this same time, Dale's beloved leaves to go to war, and this is one of the things that carries her through the trying times ahead. No matter what her family says or does to her, she has the memory of her beloved across the sea, who is waiting patiently to be allowed to return to her. And through it all, her Savior carries her through all of her trials, so that she never returns hurt for hurt, even when her heart seems to be breaking. Maybe, when its all through, her selfish family will actually see something in her that they don't have, and maybe they'll change because of it.

I have read this book several times, and I enjoy it more every time. The story is about a girl whose grandmother has just died, and in the midst of her grief, unwelcome relatives arrive. As unfeeling, rude, and obnoxious as they act, the girl does not return wrong for wrong. Through it all, she has the memory of her Savior who will bring her through every trial that comes along, and also, that there is a young man somewhere who loves her. Knowing that her beloved is across the ocean, at war, and waiting to return to her, and that her Savior loves and cares for her is just what she needs to carry her through it all. And just maybe, her relatives will see something in her, that they've never seen in anyone else, and maybe they can change, too.

      Book Description

Mary Higgins Clark, for several years, has given her readers a very special holiday gift -- short novels celebrating the Christmas season with tales of suspense and cheer. Now two of her most beloved stories are combined in one special volume -- a welcome gift for readers in all seasons.

In Silent Night, Brian, a seven-year-old boy, is in New York City at Christmas with his mother and ten-year-old brother to visit his father, critically ill in the hospital. They plan to give him a St. Christopher medal, in the belief that it will make him well. When Brian sees a woman steal his mother's wallet, with the medal in it, he embarks on a dangerous journey that changes the life of his mother and that of the thief.

With All Through the Night, two of Mary Higgins Clark's most endearing characters -- Alvirah, the lottery winner turned amateur sleuth, and her husband, Willy -- are caught up in a Christmas mystery that begins when a young mother leaves her newborn child on the doorstep of a church rectory on Manhattan's Upper West Side, and continues with the theft of a precious chalice from the church. It is a captivating tale of false identities and old wrongs made right, as well as a mystery that calls for all of Alvirah's deductive powers and Willy's world-class common sense.

Even one story by America's Queen of Suspense is cause for cheer, but this single-volume edition of Silent Night and All Through the Night is a treat for all of Mary Higgins Clark's devoted fans at any time of the year.
