Book Description

In an era of mixed media messages, in which brands are extended to the breaking point and complex marketing theories compete for attention, it is more difficult than ever to create effective brands. Allen Adamson offers a refreshingly simple solution: Bring back the basics of good branding and ensure success. Build a brand on a good idea that you test. Make sure the design and message of your brand fits the brand's true meaning, and stay away from unnecessary and complicated strategies. Drawing on his years of experience working with some of the world's top brands, from GE to IBM, Adamson shows how to communicate with customers and make your brand resonate. He also gives a behind-the-scenes look at his work with traditional names like Maxwell House as well as newcomers like JetBlue and iPod, explaining what they do right--and wrong.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Loved the book.......2007-08-25

Adamson writes in a down to earth fashion about branding. I loved the examples that were given. This is a must read for the marketing strategist. This should be used in the classroom at B-schools around the country.

3 out of 5 stars Hmmm not that good........2007-05-16

I sincerely expected more about this book since it provides perspective of the agency to client's work. Is informative but not very inspiring.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Said........BrandSimple should be required reading. .......2007-02-19

Having spun my storytelling skills from broadcasting and print to the corporate world, I often questioned whether I was looking at things through the same lens as those that had spent their entire careers in marketing. I'd seen the 300 page briefs on my client's desks and wondered whether there was something they knew that I didn't - why it all appeared to be so complicated.

I picked up BrandSimple questioning whether I was on the right track and put it down, with complete confidence that "Simple" is better. Allen Adamson lifts the curtain and reveals the wizardry behind some of the world's best branding campaigns and proves that what we do isn't magic, it's simply a matter of listening to our client's stories - finding the right words to tell them - and then making sure the client makes good on their promise.

I plan on giving Allen's book to every client that wonders why I ask so many questions before developing a creative campaign, so they'll understand that those 6 words that make up a tagline are more than just a phrase........but their story.

BrandSimple should be required reading for anyone that's interested in a career in branding. At the very least, universities should consider attaching it to every diploma they hand out to advertising and marketing graduates. It's a gift that will absolutely launch their students in the right direction.

5 out of 5 stars Constant Reminder - Simple Wins.......2007-02-05

Allen's message and supporting stories are dead-on right, keep it simple stupid. Too many brand owners, brand managers and business managers seem to believe that branding is a complicated. This could not be farther from the truth and this book makes the case that focus and sticking to the basics will win every time. BrandSimple is one of those books which anyone who has any brand interaction should read every year as a reminder that the basics win.

5 out of 5 stars This is THE brand book to read.......2007-02-03

I've just finished reading BrandSimple and thoroughly enjoyed it. The book is engaging, well structured, devoid of hyperbole and one can't argue with the Allen Adamson's reasoning. If you have to choose one book on brand this is the best one I've read.

It is an invaluable reference for new and experienced entrepreneurs that includes chapters on a wide range of topics, from entrepreneurial team building to business plans to financing. This excellent book provides an incredible amount of practical information that will help you make smarter decisions and avoid costly mistakes. The author, Steven K. Gold, is an accomplished entrepreneur who has co-founded and led five early-stage ventures. As an investor and mentor, he also advises many entrepreneurs and young companies. He earned his B.S.E. in Entrepreneurial Management from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and his M.D. from Brown University Medical School.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Nice Guide for Beginners.......2007-06-16

The author writes a nice overview of the entrepreneurial process. It's basically for novices but it does a good job for this audience. The only problem I have with this book is that it is too basic and is therefore non-unique because it is so low-level. Regardless, I must say that for the right audience, it does a fine job over giving the big picture.

If you are advanced or aspire to become advanced, I would recommend "The Startup Company Bible for Entrepreneurs" but only for high-tech entrepreneurs. Even this author has recommended it.

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for Entrepreneurs.......2007-05-14

Steven gives great illustrations to drive home his insightful advice for entrepreneurs. As he's "been there, done that," we can take his advice to heart in the hopes of becoming a success like him!

5 out of 5 stars Exellent Book.......2007-05-11

Great book for getting ready to open a new business. Would refer to anyone thinking about opening a business.

5 out of 5 stars Brief and to the point.......2007-04-27

This is a delightful little book that contains a wealth of useful and helpful information and ideas on starting a small business and ensuring that it is viable and succesful. The book is well written and easy to follow and interesting to read.

This is a must read for entrepreneurs, particularly budding ones as the information the book provides is very practical and can help you avoid making costly errors. The book covers a wide range of topics including the start-up process, marketing the business on a small budget, cash-flow forecasting, among other things.

The book is an excellent companion for the entrepreneur that is well worth having.

5 out of 5 stars Invaluable advice for the budding entrepreneur.......2007-03-04

This book does a terrific job of presenting some of the most important issues entrepreneurs face when embarking on new ventures, touching on topics such as the business plan, funding, team building, and cash flows. Using simple, yet stunningly accurate models of the entrepreneurial process, Steven Gold distills complex subjects into simple, practical, take-away messages. The classification of entrepreneurial personalities (professionals, pragmatists, and inventors) is something I think we can all relate to. I find the metaphor which compares building a new company to making "stone soup" equally compelling. There are countless books out there for budding entrepreneurs, but this one is no fluff. It gets right down to the nuts and bolts so you can concentrate on your business.

When you witness a small child haul off and smack another child unprovoked, the theory of innate morality seems to lose all validity. Moral education has always been the domain of religion, and Linda Kavelin Popov has culled 52 universal virtues from the world's religions, one for each week of the year. The resulting Family Values Guide is a workbook for the moral education of children that transcends differences of religion or culture. Each week, the book suggests, a family should gather to discuss a different virtue from the book, such as love, generosity, or patience, and the parents then emphasize the virtue for the following days, capitalizing on appropriate moments for education. Contrary to some pop psychology authors, Popov insists that reasonable boundaries be established and maintained for children and that appropriate punishment be meted out when boundaries are crossed. Psychotherapist and president of the Family Values Project, Popov sees the language of values as the key to recognizing their importance in social interaction, and encourages parents to add other values to their own list.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, not just for Baha'i children!!.......2006-11-03

This book is absolutely wonderful ~ just what Baha'u'llah encourages us to be, and the virtues are beautifully explained and great examples are given!! Very clear to understand & practice. Every family should have this book, hands down. Of course, there are more than 52 virtues we all should learn & practice, but in this format, we can read and practice one virtue per week for a year. We make it a game & share our experiences throughout the week. :) It's been incredibly helpful not only to my daughter in giving her the tools to be a kind, loving, compassionate & confident individual, but also successful in any situation life will throw at her. NOT to mention ~ it's been invaluable to me, showing and teaching me virtues I needed to work on so I can be a better example for my daughter as well. Being a parent, there is no greater responsibility than talking the talk, and *walking the walk*!! LOVE IT!!

4 out of 5 stars extremely helpful.......2006-03-19

I got this book because of a recommendation from a friend. She taught pre school, and when she applied "the virtues" to her class, she said that it was like a miracle.

Personally, my children are older, 10,11,12. I have also had awesome results so far! I have learned to see many situations differently, and it has worked! Each time I have had an opportunity to call my kids to a virtue, calmness reigns. When we argue, calling them to the particular virtue that is needed at that time makes sense to children. It also allows them to be in control of the results. I believe that I will be using this book until they are grown.

5 out of 5 stars This is a must get book!.......2006-02-09

This book has taught us how to brake the cycle of shame & blame and then shown us a loving/just way to work with kids to change behavior. It has worked on myself just as much as my daughter and she loves to read or do the virtues picks. I can't express how much this has helped us! We all love the book.Have an open mind and do it for a month you will see results right away.

5 out of 5 stars The very best parenting book and the only one you'll need.......2005-10-23

I came across this book in Australia 9 years ago and inmediately bought one. I still use it today. It is the only "parenting" book that I've found truly useful. It is relevant for children from as young as 3 till adult. Indeed, much of it gives fruit for thought for us parents as individuals as well. It is a wonderful tool for developing ethics and integrity, learning about virtues and values, your own and others' and what are universal virtues. I cannot recommend this book more strongly, not only because of its content, but also because it is fun and empowering to do.

5 out of 5 stars a very valuable contribution.......2004-02-29

What is the most important gift we can give our child during the few short years parents exercise major influence? Could it be that giving them a strong moral and ethical framework is the most important task we face? The voices are few, but they are growing - voices that say that ethics is the missing link in the world today. Voices that say that virtues need to be taught to our children in schools. Voices expressed in such books as "The Quiet revolution; Encouraging Positive Values in our Children" where we are told about a revolution in education that is taking place in the Oxford Education Authority in the UK, based on positive concepts such as honesty, truthfulness, respect, happiness, peace, responsibility and love. During the school year children are exposed to 22 similar concepts because the headmaster sees values as the foundation of education, of the healthy development of the child and indeed of the strength of the national community.

Religions identify more that 300 virtues as the basis of their teachings, but the author of "The Family Virtues Guide" has limited herself to a more manageable 52 - one for each week of the year - and reading this book was like a breath of fresh air in a smoke-filled room. Compiled by the Virtues Project, an international organization dedicated to inspiring spiritual growth in young and old alike, this multicultural, interfaith handbook has been prepared for all those who wish to turn these 52 virtues into reality by providing us with simple strategies which we can readily incorporate into our daily life and thus take advantage of those quickly passing teachable moments. All religions have their own version of the Golden Rule - do unto others as you would have others do unto you. Likewise virtues are the silver thread running through all humanity's sacred literature, the traditions of indigenous peoples, all religions, faiths and cultures. Virtues are the qualities of the soul.

We should be concerned about virtues, not only because virtuous people are good people - it goes deeper than that. In each of us there is a deep spiritual need, a yearning of the soul which is often misinterpreted as physical or material neediness. How many of us believe that if only we had more popularity, money, love, power or a better job, we would be happy? Yet when we try to fill this longing by something physical or material - something outside ourselves - we remain unsatisfied. We need to connect to our spiritual self, some would say connect with God, to feel that we are a complete, whole person. The author likens a child to an acorn with the potential to grow into a great oak - born with all the virtues waiting to grow. But just as a tree requires the right environment to grow, so virtues in a child need tender loving care to develop. In today's world of latchkey children, it is easy to believe that if we satisfy our child's physical needs we are being good parents. But a child needs more and this book helps us to understand and implement part of what is missing. This book should be read by all thoughtful, loving parents who want their child to develop into the oak tree that is their potential.

The introduction tells us what we can expect from this book: "The Guide is a how-to manual for applying virtues in everyday life, for supporting each other to set spiritual goals. It is a guide to a simple language of spirituality - the virtues themselves. Some call it the language of the heart." Each virtue begins with a small inspirational quotation from the holy book of one of the world's religions and has an explanation of its meaning, why and how we should practice it and how we measure success in implementing it. The concept is well thought through, well presented and easy to follow.

Parents are the child's first teacher, yet most of us become parents with little training and prior preparation for such easily overlooked areas as teaching virtues. Very quickly children are launched into the world of television, materialism and advertising where they are exposed to values representing the opposite of ethics, integrity and love. For those who feel that endowing our children with virtues is important, "The Family Virtues Guide" is a very valuable contribution.

5 out of 5 stars The One I Always Pull Down from the Shelf.......2003-11-29

This cookbook demostrates that combining good ingredients with simplicity can result in wonderful dishes. I have an extensive cookbook collection, some are beautiful to look at and some are a great resource for recipes; this is both a joy to browse and a pleasure to cook from. The instructions are clear, the lists of ingredients and number of steps are reasonable, and the results have always been very rewarding. As an indication of how highly I think of this book, I purchased copies for both my mother and daughter. This is a great book to have in your kitchen library.

5 out of 5 stars I went from Novice to Gourmet!.......2003-02-19

I have collected some very interesting and promising cookbooks over the years, and all of them combined could not teach me what this one book has. I literally went from Novice to Gourmet when I started making some of these recipes. I rave about it and give it to everyone on my gift list.
You can make any of the recipes everyday and not feel overwhelmed because they are truly simple! My favorite is the Lamb Shanks with Rosemary and Leeks served with mashed potatoes. Although it takes 2 hours to make, your actual work time is less than 20 minutes. Just leave it to simmer and check on it every half hour, and Viola you are a gourmet chef!
I have such confidence in the kitchen because of this book! I hope, if you decide to purchase this book or put it on your wish list, that it will give you half the joy it has given me because even that would be heaven sent!

5 out of 5 stars Organizing Tips.......2007-03-07

As a professional organizer I find this book both useful and insightful. The author has her information in a very easy to read manor. She also writes on a level of experience working with an organizing client. I would recommend this book to any one interested in organizing their own homes and also for anyone organizing others.

4 out of 5 stars If you want the bare-bones approach, this is it.......2005-05-28

All Stephanie Winston books have sold well, primarily to a corporate market. Winston's forte is ORGANIZING, which can aid readers in achieving; however, organization per se is not synonymous with simplicity (IRS forms are organized and hopelessly complex!) More-over, she rarely touches on the cerebral aspects of simplicity. The books tends to be dry and matter-of-fact -- perfect for gung-ho career-achiever types.

3 out of 5 stars A Little Disappointed.......2001-01-28

I was a little disappointed with this audio book. I am really looking to get things whipped into shape and organized, but I didn't find this very helpful. There are a lot of ideas, but they all seemed kind-of obvious and nothing really jumped out at me as a "great new idea". I thought she spent WAY too much time on explaining how to organize files, and not enough time on around the house organization ideas. I'm sure it is a good audio book, but it just wasn't what I personally was looking for.

5 out of 5 stars Useful tips for getting organized at work and home.......2000-01-19

There are lots of tips on this tape. I haven't had time to try them all out, but the ones I have tried work! I feel more organized already. It's a tape you'll want to listen to more than once. It helps that Stephanie has a very pleasant voice.

2 out of 5 stars I might use a total of two tricks..........2006-08-10

I hate leaving bad reviews of things because I know someone is trying to make money and I don't want to hinder that.

Truth is that the concept of this book was exactly what I was looking for, but it didn't have anything special in it. I might use a total of two tricks. Most of the things just come off as stupid or little clever games (i.e. with matches)... but very little magic or tricks.

2 out of 5 stars Should be called "How to look stupid".......2002-10-21

Do the stunts in this book and you're going to look thicker than a pound cake. The tricks don't ease awkward moments as it claims, instead it makes you feel more awkward than you did to begin with.

I told my friends I'd levitate an olive for them and they all gathered around the bar. After 5 mins of trying to get the trick to work, it's still obvious to those watching that the olive isn't floating at all. Suddenly you become the butt of all jokes and your friends start calling you names like "spaz".

I gave it two stars because there is one trick that is actually really good and is almost worth the price of the book. It's the one where you make a spectators finger ring link onto the stem of a borrowed bar wine glass.

2 out of 5 stars Preview a copy before buying.......2001-09-18

There is a point where simplicity converts to banality, and this book treads that line a little too closely for my tastes. Those new to bar culture may find something to wonder over here, but anyone interested in magic probably won't.

Having said that, I disagree, slightly, with others who've gone so far as to say that the book--and especially its cover--are misleading. The cover describes the tricks as "idiot-proof", and they are. The tricks are well-illustrated and competently explained. As the cover claims, you will learn how to pass a dollar bill though a lemon, and make a coin walk across the table. To be sure, there's nothing in the book that will teach you how to create the image of a levitating olive as depicted on the cover, but the cover is basically honest.

If it oversells the book at all, it does so when it claims the tricks will "amaze" friends. It's best to say, as the back cover points out, that the tricks will help smooth over awkward conversational moments. Because of the lack of anything truly breathtaking, or even much that's subtle, this book is best previewed at a local library before purchase. IIt's probably not a smart impulse buy.

3 out of 5 stars Crowd pleasing, but nothing to wet yourself over.......2001-08-13

Haven't put this book to too much use as of yet, but i can tell ou that i find it a little disappointing. Don't get me wrong, they're cool tricks and will probably come in very helpful, but the tricks lack the mystifying appeal i was hoping for. FOr the most part, they're all cool tricks, but once you preform them for friends, you're giving away how it's done. I was anting soemthing that would leave my friends a little more mystified. I guess the tricks just lack the magical side i was looking for. Still impressive tricks, but they won't leave people in aww, unless they're really hammered i guess. I'd suggest combinign this book with The Complete Book of Beer CDrinking Games jsut for kicks. hope this was helpful for you. peace

2 out of 5 stars Not what I thought it would be..........2001-08-10

I purchased this book hoping to learn a few cool magic tricks I might be able to pull of in a bar. I was immediately interested by the cover of the book, which pictures an olive levitating over a martini glass. From this picture, and from the the words "Levitate an olive..." which also appear on the cover, I assumed there might be a trick inside to make an olive appear to levitate. There is, however, nothing of the sort. The olive trick turns out to be a pretty stupid bar bet that has nothing to do with even the appearance of levitation. And it only gets worse from there. Most of the tricks in this book are, as the cover does advertise, incredibly simple; the problem is most of them are so simple they are completely uninteresting. Personally I am glad I never met the author in a bar while he was researching material for this thing.

My feeling after reading this is that it is a collection of trite gags that will cause the people around you to groan and leave you sitting alone at the bar, buying your own drinks and cursing the day you ever tusted the other reviewers on this one.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book, Covers Everything.......2006-03-06

I am the mother of a 9 month old baby and I checked out this book at my local library. I was very impressed with this book and the broad range of topics that it covers. It had many great suggestions in it. I love reading Parents magazine and this book is a great resource to have at home. It puts all of the information in one place. I will definitely be buying my own copy!

5 out of 5 stars A treasure trove of practical advice on child-rearing........2001-06-14

One of my favorite parts of Parents magazine is the "It Worked For Me" section. Think of this book as a 468 page article filled with tips and advice from parents all over America! However, not only do you get the parents' personal tips, but you also get professional advice for such things as building self-esteem, teaching etiquette, vaccination schedules, and so many other relevant and sometimes urgent topics.

I think of this book as being the equivalent of having several hundred friends that you can pick up the phone to call for advice when your child is in the throes of a tantrum, isn't interested in the potty AT ALL, or won't eat/latch on/give up that binky. There are also sections on planning a vacation with kids, doing crafts, and finding a reliable caregiver, so it's not all kid-behavior oriented...but it is all common-sense, practical advice that when you are on your last nerve, may just add a few axons to the bundle!

Book Description

In her eleven years as a Ford model, Morgen Schick has worked with the top hairstylists and makeup artists in the world. Having witnessed remarkable makeovers on models, celebrities, and other women, she has come away with one conclusion: every woman can look more beautiful with a simple makeover. They just have to use what the experts use, understand why they choose one product over another, and learn the correct application technique. In Your Makeover, Morgen Schick gives advice on how any woman can change her look, whether it's the five-minute makeover for the woman on the run-the fuller lip, the more sensuous eye, the more prominent cheekbone-or the complete makeover, incorporating full body changes in nutrition, exercise, hair, and dress. Unlike most makeup books, Your Makeover features images of women from all walks of life-from models to moms, teenagers to seniors, women of all colors and sizes-before, during, and after their makeovers. Its unique spiral-bound format makes the book easy to use and perfect for travel.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very useful little book.......2007-08-01

As a makeup veteran (been wearing it over 35 years), I still found this book surprisingly useful. Schick is a very no-nonsense commentator who merrily admits to her beauty problem, and prefers the natural look that I favour (and I also share her colouring, which is useful). Her tips on invisible eyeliner, following the lip's natural line rather than the colour line, and washing your hair with conditioner instead of shampoo all work a treat, and she gives very good information on makeup brushes and what to look for in a concealer. If the book has a fault, it's that she doesn't mention any particular make-up brands, which is probably to avoid irritating her clients, but as someone who lives in the countryside and has to buy makeup mail order without being able to test it, I would have loved her recommendations. I am not sure, for instance, how to tell if an eyebrow pencil has 35 per cent pigment. Despite that, though, a very welcome addition to my beauty library.

5 out of 5 stars The scoop on Morgen Makeup.......2001-11-19

Morgen Schick is a no-nonsense makeup guru. I don't wear makeup, I am fifteen years old and a model myself(Models aren't perfect, airbrushing is, hehe). For nearly the last five years I have worn sunscreen everyday (I have missed here and there) even in the winter, and have kept my naturally milky white skin in tact (The doctor stresses this, as does everyone but that was an example just to show you that everyone has time for taking care of themselves). The doctor's advice in this book is something you should listen to, even if you have heard it a million times before. I read this book and found great advice for my very curly hair, and fantastic little tips for any problem I have ran into. Morgen doesn't give specifics on who to buy makeup from, but she does have a mkaeup and skin care line on HSN.Morgen believes in no makeup makeup. Basically, NO FOUNDATION, which is good because I've never worn the stuff and every makeup look out there you look unfinished without everything on you. I recently bought a kit from her, she is very reasonable, and it gives great coverage on pimples and such, as well as an awesome thing called the Schick Stick, which is a lip and cheek stain to really does last all day. Her lip balm is really great too, it keeps your lips pouty and soft, even my 49 year-old mom wears it. Since thats all I wear, I can't comment on the rest, but everything I have recieved has come in great packaging, a great texture, and a range of colors in light so I can mix for myself. Her skin tones come in light, medium ,and dark, and have different tones in each set for the perfect match. Her makeup isn't conventional, but It lets you keep a clean face, look great, and only fix the problems, and still look finished. It is for any age, and has great formulations I have never seen elsewhere.

4 out of 5 stars Great, if you have Morgan's coloring.......2001-09-11

As a makeup novice, I found this book helpful and certainly have gotten lots of compliments when I apply the rules I learned here. Her makeup tips are easy to follow and her emphasis on a fundamentally natural look and largely simple applications makes this easy for almost anybody to pick up at least a few tips. I gave the book high marks because I personally got at least ten new pieces of information that I've been able to use, and that's not too bad!

That being said, as another pale, freckled, German/Irish-extraction woman in her thirties, I think I got more out of this book than many users. Morgan is really talking about her own makeup regimen, and doesn't have much to offer women of color, or darker-skinned white women either.

Also, gratuitous sections written by some doctor she works with, are a complete re-tread of advice you'll get in any women's magazine at least three times a year (stay out of the sun, drink lots of water, exercise, you are what you eat -- there, now you can skip all the parts he wrote).

Finally, I would have appreciated some more specific advice on purchasing makeup -- or, at least, more relevant to the labelling at the makeup counter. She makes much hay about noncomedogenic and other such designations, but having gone to the department store AND the health-food-store with a shopping list generated from the book's guidelines, I had no luck finding products with the kinds of chemical-mix attributes she recommends. The cosmetic companies don't market using her terminology. It would have been a better book with more of this kind of specific guidance. I do, however, applaud her for not selling out to a particular brand and recommending all their products.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!!.......2001-08-23

This a great book for women who desire a natural look. The tips she offers really make a difference. Who would have thought to brush their lips after brushing their teeth!! It works!

5 out of 5 stars The Real Deal.......2001-08-02

My mother doesn't wear makeup and I didn't have an older sister to show me how to apply makeup so this book was just what I had been looking for. I have tried makeup tricks from magazines and other beauty books but it never came out the way it looked in the picture. The photos in "Your Makeover" are not touched up/ digitally enhanced... What you see is what you get! If you are beyond the basics and a little more playful with your makeup then perhaps this isn't the book for you but you never know...you may be doing something wrong!

The Simple Science of Living Life to the Fullest

What do people who enjoy the second half of their lives do differently than those who dread getting older? Sociologists, therapists, and psychiatrists have spent entire careers investigating the ins and outs of successful aging, yet until now their findings have been inaccessible to ordinary people, hidden in obscure journals, to be shared only with other experts.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL, USEFUL, INSPIRING.......2007-09-24

I have read all of Dr. Niven's books and have found EVERY one of them to be FANTASTIC! People, Relationships, Best Half of Life, Happy People, etc have all been wonderful ideas with the research the idea is based on. As a psychologist, I hate suggesting books (bibliotherapy) that is half-baked or some crap off Opera. David Niven's is concrete, shouldn't offend anyone with a 'religious' overtone (get over it anyways), and not likely to lead them off to some cult or guru. Just plain, safe, reliable and healthy perspectives. Truly "what scientists have learned and how you can use it."

4 out of 5 stars helpful for those under 50 as well.......2005-09-24

This book is as helpful for those under fifty years of age as for those above. It simply collects the simple secrets that you may have known but already forgot. If you can appreciate and respect the way you live your life, then you are already in the better half of life...no matter what half it is. This book will remind you just that fact.
