Customer Reviews:
A+ Design Book.......2006-06-09
This is a wonderful design resource book. The books shows the homes of some of the design world "greats". It is eclectic and not your run of the mill "pretty" interiors, but offers new directions in ways to think about design.
May Be a good Coffee Table Book.......2006-01-19
I was somewhat disappointed in this book because I was looking for something that would explain the "French Style" of decorating. This is more a book of the homes of Parisian designers, obviously with a lot of money. The rooms in the book are beautifully photographed and I liked the chapter called "Seven Trends for Today." These included brief text and lots of photographs of the Provincial, Provence, Eclectric, Eccentric, Atlantic, Chalet and 1930-40's style trends. There was a brief description of the style trends, but the photos that followed gave good examples.
The remaining two chapters in this book are: Parisian Fashion Designers at Home and Parisian Interior Designers at Home. The problem with this book is the rooms depicted would require someone to have an unlimited budget and/or access to resources for their furnishings.
This book was not helpful in showing the "regular" person how to achieve the French Style in their own home. Most of the text just describes the exquisite items and creations. For example, "A vase- light has been created from minutely worked Venetian glass, and it dominates the sculpted wrought-iron pediment of a play cabinet which was designed by Gilbert Poillerat" which desribes an elaborate vase with flowers out of glass. There were a few rooms where you could probably implement and adapt to be used within your own home, but the "French Style" depicted in these rooms are based on ALL the elements, from the beautiful custom glasswork to the exquisite fabrics and furnishings.
If you are an interior designer who has clients with unlimited funds or are someone with an unlimited budget, you might find this book useful. For those of us who have to stay within a reasonable budget, this is not the book to learn and implement French Style.
What could have elevated this book above 2 stars would have been more informative text on creating the style and not just descriptions of the products and creators of the items in the photographs.
Not What You Are Hoping For!.......2005-03-15
Having several books on French style and French Country style, many showcasing homes in France, this book is a huge disappointment. Few of the rooms are stylish, but rather, well just junky. I was looking forward to another look at French style in France, not just the interpretation of such in America. This is a coffee table book for those who have little design sense.
Elle Decor: Grand Book of French Style.......2005-01-21
I have many books on style and decor, but this is by far one of my favorites. I love that it includes many facets of French style, not just the ubiquitous, American stereotype of what "French" looks like. Chapter headings read: "Provincial," "Atlantic," "Provence," and "Eclectic" (my favorite) to name a few. The back of the book is dedicated to showcasing the homes of a few Parisian fashion and interior designers, an addition that I quite enjoyed. If you're looking to redecorate or just love looking, this book is for you!
French Designers.......2002-03-02
I felt that this book was a nice collection of work by French designers. It depicted various French designers work in various styles. It did not however show French style. This was what I was hoping to see.

Book Description
This completely revised and updated second edition to integrates the many new technologies and insights now available for the diagnosis of genetic diseases. The authors use such methodologies as PCR optimization dosage analysis, mutation scanning, and quantitative fluorescent PCR for aneuploidy analysis, Neurofibromatosis type 1, and Duchenne muscular dystrophy. These largely generic methodologies may be adapted to most genetic conditions for which a molecular diagnosis is relevant, no matter how frequent or rare their incidence. Molecular Diagnosis of Genetic Diseases, Second Edition offers diagnostic molecular geneticists a unique opportunity to sharpen their scientific skills in the design of assays, their execution, and their interpretation.

A fabulaus surprise.......2000-10-14
I am constantlly looking for new publications, materials in the market and this book surpased all of my expectations. We think that Elle Deco is a marvillous magazine and this book resumes the best of the gardens that they have pictured. The contents presentation is specially interesting as they devide gardens in to different categories, for example, exotic gardens, kitchen gardens, small gardens, etc. Beutifull photography, a perfect presentation and a wonderfull art design.

Book Description
After a fire at Llanfair's new French restaurant makes murder the dish du jour, Constable Evans is on the case.
Fourth in the popular Constable Evans series
Customer Reviews:
Your Grandmother's mystery.......2006-10-13
This is the fourth entry in the mystery series of Evan Evans, the constable of the small Welsh village of Llanfair, who is somewhat of an underachieving Dudley Do-right, honest, fair, respectful and always pleasant. The books are "G" rated, with little violence and swearing, and any romantic situations Evan finds himself in are somewhat Victorian. There is a cast of regular characters in the village including Evan's match-making coddling landlady, a pair of feuding reverends (and their respective wives), a nosey postman who reads everyone's mail, an older, more experienced sargeant from the neighboring town, (who relies on Evan heavily), and several available women vying for Evan's eye. In a word the series is quaint and not without charm. In this adventure Evan investigates several fires that appear to be set by a xenophobic arsonist with the most serious involving a mysterious French restaurateur and her recently opened eatery. Said restaurateur's dialog is somewhat comical in that her accent is portrayed by simply substituting the letter "z", (and sometimes the letter "s"), for "t" and "th", with a few choice French phrases such "Voila", "Mon Dieu" and "Ooh-la-la", and is reminiscent of Pepe Lepew's, (of Bugs Bunny cartoon fame). She also smokes, drinks wine and is a "romantic". The chase takes Evan, (and his friend, "Sarge") to Southern England, then coastal France and finally into the big city of Paris before this one is solved - a slight departure from the earlier books. These are "light" mysteries and this one is even lighter than the previous three without much build-up or suspense or even a mystery. As stated elsewhere this series' books are quick reads and then alas, quickly forgotten.
gentle mystery.......2003-05-27
I have to confess that I enjoy reading Ms. Bowen Welsh mysteries. Getting that out of the way, I find them to be a very pleasent diversion, but not much more. Her plots tend to become a blur a day or two after I finish a book. And this one is no exception. Its very charming and cute and unimportant. Even so you will have a very good time reading it.
Arson in Llanfair.......2003-04-03
A serial arsonist is loose in the Welsh mountains. He seems to be targeting properties owned by foreigners. Is there a connection to some of the nationalist groups? Village constable Evan Evans thinks so. Meanwhile, the owner of the new French restaurant just down the mountain is receiving threatening notes. But when her place goes up in flame, a body is found in the rubble. Who is it? And who is setting the fires? Meanwhile, Evan is thinking about applying for a promotion that would take him out of Llanfair.
Rhys Bowen offers yet another charming tale of life in a small Welsh village. Llanfair grows more familiar and fun with every visit. This is probably the best plot to date. While I suspected the direction this book was going, it took several twists along the way to the satisfying conclusion.
With this, the fourth book in the series, these people have become friends. I'm already looking forward to my next visit.
EVAN & ELLE--------A HIT!!!!!.......2001-07-13
I really liked Evan & Elle. I have read all four books and enjoyed them all. Evan Evans is in his usual mode. A policeman that is concerned about the people around him. He does not use bad language nor is he trying to kill someone. In this book Evan has really two mysteries going at the same time. Who is setting the fires and who killed the man found dead after one of the buildings burn? How is the newcomer, Madame Yvette involved and is she Madame Yvette????? I like the barmaid Betsy and her play for Evan. Bronwen is his girl though, they make a good couple. I fear if they ever married it would not be good for the series. I can see the town of Llanfair and the surrounding countryside in my mind as I read, also the characters involved. Bowen does an excellent job of writing. Make me wish that is where I lived. I would suggest reading the books in order but I feel most will like Evan Evans and the people of Llanfair.
Evan Evans gets better and better.......2001-05-24
Latest in series of Police Constable Evan Evans who is the sole law enforcement officer in a rural Welsh village. Part of the fun is reading about series recurring characters and their evolution. At long last, it appears Evans-the-Police is ready to start thinking about committing to Bronwen Price, school teacher. More happens in this book about their relationship than has happened in all the previous books togeher! All in all, a good read, especially if you've read the earlier ones in the series.

NOT TIME TRAVEL!.......2007-03-15
Although Amazon put this book in the Time Travel genre it is not! It is a fantasy about a twist of the old fairy tale of a person turning into a frog and he looks for someone to kiss him and change him back. I read the whole book through, thinking perhaps somewhere it had something to do with time travel and it didn't. The plot was minimal at best and only the character of the man who changed into a frog was really explored. Interesting from the frog/man's point of view, but not "ribbiting" enough for a whole book.
I'd rather kiss a frog then read this book.......2006-06-21
I purchased this book because of the raving reviews about it. So I said what the hey, I'll give it a chance... Yeah...I'm still giving it a chance. I bought this book about five mouths ago and I still haven't finished it considering that I usually finish a book in a couple of days. I keep picking it up to read then put it down to read something else. I guess the story is very juvenile to me. It makes me wonder, how old is the author. Is she in high school?
I have to give the book this, the concept of the story is cute. It's about a playboy, named Craig. He gets turned into a frog by a voodoo witch cause he was messing with her granddaughter, I think. (I read it so long ago I'm not sure how it happened). He's a frog by day and a man at night. Then, Elain, a scientist comes along and they meet then yada yada yada it goes on from there.
The thing that bothers me about the story is the way the author tells it. It feels like I'm reading a book written by a sixteen year old. The dialogue and some of the scenes are just so LAME! I'm just have such a hard time getting through the book. There was only one scene that I found really enjoyable and it wasn't the sex scenes (which were lame too)......On second thought, the sex scenes weren't soo bad but the characters talked too much JUST BE QUIET AND MAKE LOVE! LOL Maybe this story isn't for me cause I see a lot of people enjoyed this book which is great. I'm glad for them, they can have my copy. All I can say is read it at your own risk.
Move over Prince Charming!.......2005-05-25
Dragged from his bed in the middle of the night, Craig Thibodeaux finds himself facing the bayous Voodoo Queen. When he is cursed for NOT being interested in her granddaughter, Craig thinks it's a joke until he wakes up the next morning a frog! Suddenly he starts taking the Voodoo Queen seriously and realizes he has less than two weeks to get a woman to fall in love with him or spend the rest of his life as a bullfrog, and he doesn't have a prospect to even start with.
Elaine Smith is a genius dedicated to her research. But when she finds her fiance making out with another woman and he accuses her of being more interested in her work than him, she realizes the truth in his statements. So, rather than sending an intern to collect the water samples she needs from Bayou Miste, she decides to get out of her laboratory and goes herself.
I liked Craig as a human because while he knew he had to find some one to fall in love with him, he wasn't out to hurt or use anyone to break his spell. Elaine walks into his life and seems like the perfect target but because she is so innocent and naive he didn't want to break her heart because he didn't want to settle down. I got more than a few laughs from his frustration of being a frog - getting stuck in a room because he couldn't open the door, for one.
Elaine does a lot of growing as a character - she gets out of her lab, associated with other people that aren't scientists and learns that just because she is a child genius, she didn't have to give up her life as an adult too. Another reason I like Elaine is because she is easy to fluster - Craig is one of the best looking guys she has ever seen. So sometimes her brain mixes the yummy thoughts she has about him with the actual conversation she is having with the man. Some of her misspoken words were funnier than others, but this was hilarious!
Elle James has written a truly enjoyable fractured fairy tale with her version TO KISS A FROG. This was such a fun read! The story has a quick light pace and even the final confrontation was humorously written. If you are looking for a light funny read this is a book that I would recommend.

terrific debut.......2005-04-29
I am the type of person who has to read before I go to sleep. It relaxes me, takes off the stress of the day.
I am also the type of person who has to have a solid seven hours of sleep to function. Not something that happened while I was reading Elle James's debut, To Kiss a Frog.
Craig Thibodeaux has been a bad boy, and he messed - or didn't mess - with the wrong woman, a woman whose grandmother is a voodoo priestess. A woman who had the priestess put a spell on him because he wasn't able to fall in love. Craig is wary, but it isn't until the following evening when he wakes up - not quite himself - that he realizes what has happened.
He's a frog by day, a man by night, with only a matter of weeks to find a woman who can love him, warts and all, to end the curse. Otherwise, he'll be on a permanent fly diet.
Elaine Smith comes upon Craig just as he's making the transformation from frog to man, and since frogs don't wear clothes, well, she gets an eyeful. But the plain Jane scientist has come to the bayou to find the source of a pollutant in the swamp, not handsome naked Cajuns. She's also using the trip as a bit of an escape since she found her fiance making out with a very attractive secretary. Men are not high on her priority list.
But she needs someone to take her out to the bayou, and Craig has evenings free. You know, of his frog skin. So he takes her out to the bayou, where they investigate the cause of the pollution and find themselves in danger up to their eyeballs.
I love the Cajun setting, and could actually feel the swamp water in my hair - not pleasant. Craig was a fun hero, both as man and frog. You know he's got to be great if his dog even loves him in frog form. Elaine blossomed on the page as she fell in love with Craig and learned to like herself as well. The secondary characters added texture to the story.
To Kiss a Frog is a fun, sexy read, and I'm looking forward to great things from Elle!
Tied a ribbit around my heart.......2005-03-18
Craig Thibodeaux has finally messed with the wrong woman - the granddaughter of a legendary VooDoo Queen. Determined that he learn the error of his bad-boy ways, she casts a spell on him. Frog by day - man by night, unless he can find someone to love him before the next full moon. Enter brainiac Elaine Smith. She's come to the bayou to expose an ecological terrorist. Craig figures the shy bookworm will be easy to seduce into loving him to break the curse. And the fact she keeps finding him naked can't hurt either.
Not so fast, frog boy! Elaine only has eyes for the amphibians she's dissecting. Love? Not in this lifetime.
With a wonderfully colourful cast of characters, charming humour, clever dialogue, and a who-dun-it twist at the end I never saw coming, To Kiss A Frog is a great debut novel from Elle James. I can't wait for her next book!!

Customer Reviews:
TOO MUCH.......2007-07-20
TOO MUCH FURNITURE, TOO MUCH COUNTRY, TOO MUCH CLASSIC, I WAS EXPECTING SOMETHING MORE ACTUAL LIKE THE MAGAZINE
Blan, Cluttered, and Repetative.......2007-06-15
This book's content was a terrible disappointment. First of all, the room setups and designs are absolutely unimaginative. The furnishings look like IKEA purchases and the constant repetition of the designs looked repetitive page after page. There is a cheapness in the furnishings that have no art form to them and they appear to be all made by the same guy with a hacksaw and some pine wood. Sorry, it just has no elegance or variation in its approach. I get the feeling I'm in some kind of small studio apartment with furnishings that are attempting to look modern and cutting edge, but ending up being tacky and noisy. The rooms are extremely cluttered, looking more like storage attics than beautiful living quarters. There is no visual invitation for the viewer to find his way into the settings. The color schemes are drone and blan and the textures are all the same. There is so much repetition of the geometric forms of the rectangle, whether in the pillows, sofas, or decor that it becomes boring within the first few pages. Unfortunately, each page is filled with the exact same look and same mono-note style throughout the whole book. The content is not very informative and simply offer quick snippets of info on the designer's names here and there. I am definitely sending this book back because it was absolutely worthless.

Empire of the Bay: The Company of Adventurers that Seized a Continent
ASIN: 1551539586 |
Book Description
This sizzling, action-packed account of Canada's riotous early days recounts the schemes and schemers that launched a famous trading empire. From its earliest days, the Hudson's Bay Company battled everyone and everything just to survive.
Customer Reviews:
Exciting Canadian fur-trading history.......2004-07-14
The early fur-trading history of Canada was not about exploring as much as it was about making money...and the author has brought to the book some of the most exciting stories and adventurers of that era. I liked how the author included stories about Native peoples and their importance to the fur-trade in early Canada.
